the dreamer trilogy really went "wouldn't it be fucked up if you had real, tangible proof that without your childhood trauma you could be happy? like, wouldn't it be fucked up if you made a copy of yourself but deleted all the childhood trauma and then that copy was capable of living a happy, independent life while you're constantly on the verge of dying and miserable and drowning in self-hatred??" and i'm just supposed to live w that

hey, just wanted to say thanks for the rec for Cat Girl. it is the best kind of extremely uncomfortable! but it's got me musing on your note about the relevance of the cat girl element itself. I agree that it is depicting an abusive relationship, but it's clear that Peter is completely incapable of perceiving that that's what it is, because he's so far down a deeply screwed hole of ideology. (continued in a sec, hang on-)
- so Peter is the way he is because he has accepted a series of small explanations for the things in his life as seeming accurate, that has stacked up into a deeply dysfunctional worldview that he's too deep into to question at all. so I think the Literal Government Issued Cat Girl is very much a metaphor for a society-level case of "you don't question your own idea of normal". rather than address the root of the problem, a wildly unethical bandaid has been slapped on it. in other words; Peter doesn't question that his ideas are correct, when they're obviously very skewed. but the society that gave him Andi doesn't question that it is normal for people to get this twisted up in an effort to make sense of the world. of COURSE there are internet chuds, people like Peter existing is "normal". and in the process of just accepting that some people are unsalvageable, innocent people like Andi get hurt, and that's just "normal" too. Peter isn't unfixable. it's clear he could be better, WANTS to be better, because he is straight up miserable. but he doesn't consciously know that, or how to start. the decision that some people are just fundamentally screwed up and there's nothing anyone can do about it doesn't just hurt him, it lets him hurt the people around him. Andi is, metaphorically, everyone else being tossed under the bus alongside Peter by the simple act of treating him like he's just inherently a shitty person.
Man, this is a long ask! If I were the author of Cat Girl, I'd be honored to see someone spend so much time thinking about it. But I don't think I agree, exactly.
Tumblr media
Peter wants to "be a good person", yes, but his understanding of what a "good person" is is completely self-centered. Him calling Andi "Yua" while talking over her trying to explain that she does in fact have a name is obviously establishing him as a douche, but it's also worth noting that "Yua" is a Japanese name. He's thinking of her as an anime waifu and not a person (or, given the first results when I google "Yua", a porn star, but maybe it's a Breath of Fire 2 reference)
Tumblr media
And while he falls into depressive self-loathing after she complains about not having a change of clothes, his internal monologue is entirely about himself. At no point, ever, does Peter even consider that Andi has feelings or is anything other than a reflection on him.
Tumblr media
When he locks her in a closet, his most overtly abusive act, he starts crying because he feels bad about what a bad person he is, but even while he's crying he's simultaneously blocking the door, which is a very literal depiction of their relationship. His angsting about being a good person is not his way out of the problem, it is the problem. He never even once considers being nice to Andi because she'll like it, it's entirely "I don't want to force her to have sex with me (because that would make me feel bad), but maybe if I'm nice to her she'll initiate the sex". And he doesn't even care about the sex itself, just the implicit validation of being Confirmed Good By A Girl.
Peter is the way he is because his morality is entirely self-centered. Andi is a way for him to prove his morality to himself (well, try to and fail), not an actual person whose feelings he's ever considered except for if she hates him or not. That's what makes him such an interesting villain, he keeps concocting a story in his head where he's the poor sweet babu trying his best and never stops doing that to let his girlfriend out of the closet.

With Blades 2 coming to an end, I just wanna get it off my chest that I'm really not a fan of how they wrote Nia for a great part of this one, particularly vis-à-vis the way they wrote MC. I know I've been saying some stuff along those lines for ages now, but it hasn't left my mind so now I'm gonna actually get into it.
For starters, I think a lot of the issue with Nia's writing was captured pretty well in the tags of this post, particularly on point 2. Like I've said, Nia unfortunately falls into the category of a Mary Sue in that every "flaw" she's given just serves to elevate her to perfection. Hell, even when corrupted—when a person is supposed to be in their most volatile state—the worst she does is be snarky that first chapter (she is aggressive toward MC at one point before this, but it's neither acknowledged nor repeated later). After that, she is entirely normal, just not as much of a pushover, and while I much preferred shadow!Nia, I do think that this really undermines the whole gravity of corruption and b2's emphasis on shadow-light balance, since shadow!Nia comes off as quite balanced already, especially compared to other corrupted characters we've seen.
But here's the thing, that post that got me thinking is months old, and we have gotten more story since then, and what I have noticed is that Nia does, in fact, have one real flaw in canon, but it's the one flaw she's absolutely not meant to have: Nia in canon can at times come off as self-absorbed. She either makes things about herself or doesn't stop people from doing this, and there are multiple examples of it. There is the instance in Riverbend when MC is taking a moment to finally try to process Kade's capture (which, following their own capture, they never got the chance to process) and Nia derails the conversation and makes it about her own grief and is comforted by MC and Mal. Another example is the moment on Gerhard's ship when she vents about the pressure she's been under and lets MC comfort her without at any point considering that MC might have been under similar pressure.
And don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a character putting themselves first. But when the book doesn't waste a single chance to tell us that Nia's character is the complete opposite and that she is chronically incapable of not being considerate 25/8, it's quite contradictory. I mean, you can even call out Ethan Ramsey, PB's golden boy, on making things about himself at some point in OH, but because, unlike Ethan, Nia is written for you to consider her super sweet and wholesome and perfect, the Blades MC actually contributes to this by performing mental gymnastics to turn something around to be about Nia.
Which brings me to my final point: Blades 2 pushed MC to the side to revolve around Nia, but MC is exactly the person they meant for Nia to be, by virtue of the dissonance between showing and telling. They tell you that Nia is selfless because she always puts everyone else first. Well, I can and did name examples showing the contrary, meanwhile, MC is the one who was been through the most traumatic ordeal and is constantly checking in on everyone else without expecting and without receiving much of the same courtesy in return, even apologizing to Nia because she was "carrying all that weight on her own", never mind that MC always has the weight of the world on their shoulders. They tell you that Nia is the heart of the party, but they both told and showed us that everything fell apart without MC.
Even some of Nia's most defining character traits, MC has in similar measure. Nia sees the best in everyone? MC can be the #1 believer in Aerin's redemption after all the shit he pulled. Nia is trusting to the point of naivete? MC literally trusted Valax while she outright told them at every turn she would turn on them at the first opportunity, and was genuinely hurt by the betrayal. Miss me with MC calling Nia "our better self".
Every trait that they've gone out of their way to tell you Nia has they've shown twofold in MC, which is why it's so exasperating to me that they reduced MC to the conduct through which other characters' (particularly Nia's) stories get told while their own is an afterthought. I am by no means saying that two people can't have similar traits or that two people can't be good people at the same time, but there is something about praising these traits in Nia when, based on these, MC should be held to a similar standard. Instead, they relegated MC (main. character.) to a supporting character in Nia's story, elevating every trait that MC possesses only in Nia while ignoring them in MC to the point that many scenes felt frustrating to play.

You know me lads I love a good au:
This time on the table we got ourselves a serving of What if Kimblee got discharged from the military after Ishval instead of going to prison. So you have this really mentally unstable individual who is clearly going through a lot (though most notably for him is the ph stone being taken from him) told he is unfit to serve in the military anymore. And that he will be discharged on grounds of shell shock. Kimblee understands this is their way of getting rid of him, a nightmare to deal with.
He goes home. Well to the hospital first and then to some hearings and then the whole court martial situation and then he doesn't even get to go home but they shove him into a mental institution until he calms down. Because Kimblee? A bit angry. Let's not get into how or why he didn't blow people up let's just focus on the au because this isn't even the good part.
Man finally goes home after this ordeal. Has to reconnect with his family. Mama Kimblee my beloved is so happy to have her boy back from Ishval. If anything she's quite happy that her Solf’s not in the military anymore. If only he'd stop with the alchemy business too and focus on being a doctor or a banker or even a textile worker. Something real and safe and financially tangible.
Kimblee is not a military officer. He gets those veteran discounts and a veteran's pension and that's about it. So he focuses on research.
-When are you going to find someone to settle down with? Martina's boy is already married and he's younger than you!-
So he focuses on research.
-Not to mention that I'm worried about your health. You aren't eating enough. And I don't think I've seen you sleep once through the entire night since you've been back!-
He focuses on research.
-I mean, really, Solf, maybe you should talk to someone about this. Aren't you in contact with any of your war buddies? You never have anyone over. You can't be that disliked. I taught you how to be charming.-
Somehow he manages to focus enough on his research for long enough for his name to become synonymous with alchemy. Has written a plethora of articles and even helped write some books on alchemy. His theories are definitely something else and this gives him a certain level of infamy that the war didn't. Feel like the man gets a PhD. Just so he can write Prof.dr Kimblee. It's definitely filled some void in his chest. His mother's certainly proud her son's a doctor of SOME kind. Still not like Martina's boy who's an actual surgeon, but oh well.
At least he gets out of the house.
Kimblee remains in contact with two people from the military. Very one sided. Kimblee didn't even know these people liked him well enough to write him. But the whole hospital then discharge then PhD thing must be interesting enough to warrant them to write.
There's a whole little box dedicated to the photos Maes Hughes sends him. Kimblee is a bit frightened to think about what kind of box someone like Roy Mustang must need in order to encompass all of the memorabilia Maes Hughes sends him.
Maes is kind of like a normal friend Kimblee can tell his mother about. Because other than the neighbourhood gossip and the music scene in their hometown, he is painfully aware he is running out of topics to talk about w her.
The other person is. Well. Not a person, more of an angel of death if Kimblee can say so. Riza Hawkeye sends one or two letters per year. But she sends them. Kimblee thinks that's nice of her. He sends her cards on the major holidays. Has invited her out to come and go hunting with him in these parts. Has always had the offer declined. Does not mind.
Kimblee is a painfully smart man and he has a lot of stipulations put into place how he needs to use his alchemy and in which circumstances he is allowed to use his very destructive alchemy. It's...exhausting. though it is better than having a tattoo artist completely tattoo over his palms and effectively render him incapable of ever using it.
In comes Edward Elric. He has gone through so many books to no avail. He is at his wit's fucking end about finding any information about how he and his brother can find their bodies back. He has no idea who else he can harass.
Roy Mustang is just about to suggest Shou Tucker, the Life Thread Alchemist - when Riza just says, offhandedly: "I mean, there's always Kimblee."
Roy? Instantly grimaces. Horrified. What even is life?
This reaction? Just enough for Edward to go head first into his manhunt on the Kimblee guy. "I read some of his stuff and he seems really intense. How do you know him? I thought he wasn't a State Alchemist?"
"He was." Roy just leaves it at that. Smart man, this Roy. Not one to waste words.
Anyhow they track Kimblee down. Which isn't difficult. He's in the phone book. Riza has his address.
But it gets a bit funny when he reaches the destination. Edward just keeps pointing at people and going: ''Oi, are you Solf J. Kimblee?'' ''Oi are YOU doctor Solf J. Kimblee?'' ''OI, WHAT ABOUT YOU, ARE YOU SOLF J. KIMBLEE, DR PHD ALCHEMY GUY?'' (billy nye the science guy theme plays)
''He's gone fishing,'' one person says. Finally they point him in the direction of this guy who's on a little row boat out into a lake. He has a hat on and he's chilling. Edward, naturally, keeps shouting at him for attention from the lake shore. He's screaming atop his lungs. ''OI??? OI!!!! YOU DR KIMBLEE OR NOT??? OIIIIII, WE GOT SOME QUESTIONS, WE'RE ALCHEMISTS!''
Alphonse is like: ''Maybe it's not him. Maybe it's just some guy fishing.''
''How can he fish?'' Edward's pointing at the boat and the man in the boat. ''He doesn't have a fishing rod.''
Alphonse hums. It is pretty suspicious.
Edward won't stand for it, thanks. He and Alphonse are getting in another boat because they don't have any time to spare. The faster they get information the faster they can get out of here and maybe finally find a lead towards their goal. Besides, the ph stone continues to be an enigma nobody knows anything about! This guy could very well be a dud, but they'd at least like to figure it out quickly.
So, their boats are neck and neck. Alphonse introduces them as the Elric brothers.
''You're that twelve year old that became a State Alchemist?'' The man says. He doesn't seem surprised, only mildly curious.
''I'm fifteen now, thanks!'' Then. ''Are you that Doctor Kimblee guy or not?''
''If you're asking if I'm Martina Kimblee's son, Adam Kimblee the successful surgeon, I will have to disappoint you.''
Edward is fuming by the end of Kimblee's roundabout answers that he tells him he's come here for one purpose and one purpose only and that's to hear what Kimblee knows about alchemy and ph stones and that he won't be leaving until he gets what he wants.
''Sure,'' Kimblee says, ''I can tell you about my research. On the condition you kill more fish than I do.''
The boat Alphonse and Edward took to get to Kimblee has two fishing rods in it. And some bait. Though, Kimblee's doesn't.
Edward and Alphonse have accepted this bet
Kimblee's humming a classical piece. Maybe the Carmina Burana. He's grinning. He's having a fun time just chilling in his boat looking at these two very determined teenagers trying to out-fish him.
Edward is telling him that he's gonna lose so fucking hard. He hasn't caught one fish yet.
Kimblee points to all of their wriggling fishes. ''And those are still alive.''
Edward huffs and says they'll die eventually. There's no way Kimblee can beat them. They've caught like 5 fish so far. And Kimblee? A big ol zero! Nye-he!
Five fish turns into ten. They're celebrating on their boat already. The poor souls. Kimblee doesn't prepare them for what's coming. He leans over his boat and claps, sparks sizzling from his alchemical activation, and he very gently submerges his palms into the lake water. There's a big boom. Suddenly definitely-more-than-ten fish swim up to the surface, dead and dazed.
Kimblee smiles at them and waves with his moon array palm. ''I win.''
''You didn't CATCH any of them, though!''
Kimblee scoffs. ''I said kill, not catch.''
''He did say that, brother...''
''Motherfucker.'' Edward throws a fish at Kimblee.
''So rude!'' Kimblee says, barely dodging the fish.

Cringe is dead, let's do fic recs for our friends and our selves. I'll start.
DF Fics written by my friends (and me) that I still think about all the time:
By @oddeyesight ((Ao3 account))
ya'aburnee (General)
Notha and Uaanta find an interesting object, digging around Notha's previous lab.
The song + the fic are simultaneously very sad and very sweet. The buildup to the ending in particular, the crescendo and then the quietness of it.
chiaroscuro (Teen and Up)
Hero talks about their adventures in HHD, and Notha is reminded of an unpleasant meeting that happened so long ago.
And on the complete other side of the spectrum: Fear! Terror! Orpheus and Eurydice themes! Still kind of about grief but in a distinctly more "I'm afraid to lose you" way. 10/10 I go feral every time.
~!~
By @valorousowl ((Ao3 Account))
Dive Deep (General Audiences)
Notha Ly'Ehr is determined to save her friend. Remthalas is determined to trick their friends into killing him. Whatever it takes, this time would be different.
I keep coming back to this because the emotions are very sharp and real in a way that I can't quite describe here; you really have to read it for yourself. Notha's entire characterization is tragic, but in a way that I find deeply compelling.
Unspoken Names (Mature)
Aegis is well acquainted with Pandora. It isn't hard for him to suss out who Aspar actually is. He'll keep his mouth shut, for a price. Aspar may be desperate and lonely enough to pay it.
Overall lower stakes than my usual fare, but still packs a real whallop of emotional resonance, especially the part where Aegis tells Aspar that he's the one who should know better. I am physically incapable of being normal about Aspar and the softness and sadness of Aegis trying to be nice to him.
~!~
By @7yd1a ((Ao3 Account))
Return, Dear Light (Explicit)
This one is about Jaania living in the tower with the rest of the Villain Rehab Club, but really it's about her learning to feel again, and to forgive. Also she bones (haha) Alexander with an icicle; pretty fun use of healing ice magic I think! I don't know if there will ever be a continuation, but the characterization and the speed at which information about the characters is effectively conveyed is a lot of fun to watch unfold.
~!~
By @mismagireve ((Ao3 Account, though they are pretty much done with DF as a fandom.))
Somewhere Ages And Ages Hence (Mature)
According to Swordhaven's record systems, shortly after you fled into the forest, you were beset upon by wolves, and your remains were found hours later by a Rose researcher who had been on his way into the city for work that morning when he stumbled across the grisly scene of your demise. You are, for all intents and purposes, free of everything that was plaguing you now that you're dead and gone. You can't help but wonder if your new life hiding in the woods pretending to be dead and playing nanny to a Rose cultist's child could be counted as freedom.
I'm always up for stories about normal people in completely bonkers situations treated as, if not normal, then at least livable; I think this, even in its unfinished form, is one of the most fitting for that theme, and I really, really enjoy Syn's characterization of Lynn and Valen as people, and how the Reader-insert is most definitely their own person even while being, well, Reader-insert.
The Importance Of An "O" (General)
He got a letter from a faraway village.
This one isn't as immediately present in my mind as some other fics, but every time I see Galanoth (and tbh the word "dragoon") I do think of it, so it's definitely left an impression!
Words Spoken In Wormwood (Mature)
Among the bars in Swordhaven, there was an unspoken rule: if you serve Rose members, you don't let anything they say leave the building. So when one night at the bar, a few Rose members were discussing some secrets regarding one of their own— Well. Go ahead and ask anyone who was there that night. That conversation never happened.
This inspired several headcanons about Valen/Amadeus himself of the "they'll never believe you" sort so this is as good as canon in my heart.
Fine (General)
He was never good with people, and never made many friends, so whenever he lost one, it always hit hard. Tomix finds himself missing the hero.
This one gets a special mention even though I only read it today because I WILL be thinking about this for a long time.
~!~
By myself
Sutures (Explicit)
So You Found Out You're A Masochist: A Beginner's Guide or Tomix gets injured and learns he has a kink.
It's got some gore, fair warning for that. But I keep thinking about it because of the uh, applications of intangible spirit hands, and also the nature of Tomix's unraveling.
In Vain (General)
A child's first brush with death.
This and the ask where I mention Ogenos Dessert Sausage are constantly on my mind because I'm stuck on thinking about lost cultural treasures and how they affect those who knew them and then lost them as time went by. I should post that ask on Ao3 maybe.
The Masochism Tango (Explicit)
"They feel like normal lungs. Spongy, surprisingly resilient, but so fragile at the same time..." She said, in a whispered, reverent tone he almost missed. She'd never sounded like that before, not that he knew. The silence stretched on a little longer than could really be accounted for, without the sound of her tools as she vivisected him. Notha's eyes went dilated and faintly mischievous above her mask. What did you find? ~!~ There isn't a lot of existing documentation on abyssal elf biology, so if Notha's going to make clones for herself and Remthalas, she needs to take some notes.
I would be lying if I said this one didn't live rent free in my head. Notha kissing his heart, especially.
~!~
Feel free to reblog with your own fics or other fics from this fandom that you enjoy!

I was gonna post this in the tags, but it's a lot easier for me to write it outside of the tags, so I'm putting it here below the keep reading thing.
ANYWAYS I honestly love this art??? Like I'm super into mid-tf and this is like the perfect mid-tf to me?
The way Mana's mouth has almost completely been transformed into a frog's mouth and her new (distended!) vocal sac just tells me that at this point in the transformation, she is either completely incapable of human speech anymore (she can only croak like the frog she is becoming) or, if she can still speak, it's peppered with frog croaks.
Then you get her mismatched eyes: one of them is still her completely normal eye but the other doesn't have much long to go before it's completely become a frog's eye. She still has a bit of her old eye color left but it's probably not long before that entire eye has become yellow and her pupil has completely become slit-like.
Can't forget about how her arms and legs are being transformed too.
I want to talk about her arms first. They're still mostly human in appearance, but her new frog hands and her new green skin color shows that: the transformation of her human limbs to frog limbs is starting from the extremities. And then you get into her new frog hands too, just how her fingers are extending and fusing together to form her new three fingered hands. Once again the mismatched aspect of the transformation is just something I love: one of her hands has nearly completely finished becoming a frog hand but the other has barely started to transform.
Finally you have her legs, Mana's soon-to-be frog legs. For starters, she's crouched similar to a frog, can she still stand up and walk like a human or at this point must she hop around like a frog? One thing is for certain though: her legs have certainly increased in size considering that both her socks and her leggings are visibly being ripped apart. Of course, there is also her new frog feet having burst out of her shoes. If there's one thing I could say I dislike about this art, it's that that aspect of the transformation has already been completed and we don't get a 'one foot is nearly fully froggified and the other is only partially', but I also suppose it'd be similar to the hands (her toes growing in length and fusing together to form her three froggy toes).
Also, it just makes you wonder what this transformation would look like if it continued, especially the rest of her body (and I don't want to get into detail about that or think about that considering this character is 14 beyond 'Well her body will probably be transformed into a frog's body') and what the end result will be: Will Mana be completely a frog with absolutely no evidence that she was previously Mana Fujisaki or will she still remain elements of her 'Mananess', even after becoming a frog. (Personally considering that the art shows no changes to her hair, I imagine that Frog!Mana would still at least have that, like how sometimes when a character gets transformed in anime or cartoons, their hair remains unchanged so viewers can easily tell that it's still them, you know? Of course - her hair could also fall out as the last step of the transformation as well, but I prefer to imagine it'd remain [similarly, I also like to imagine that, her confused expression in the art aside, she would retain her internal human mind, rather than becoming a frog both physically and mentally - and honestly I can view her expression as like 'What is happening?' anyways])
Did I really just write 600 words as to why I love this piece of art of Mana Fujisaki from Onegai My Melody being transformed into a frog?
Yes, yes I did.
Do I regret it?
No, no I don't.

Ok, but also this is kinda right? Like we malec shippers, has accepted that Alec doesn't wanna be immortal and although he and Rafe are gonna die one day, at least Magnus and Max won't be alone. But it's really annoying that every rule of the TSC world can change when it comes to certain characters (like Tessa being the only warlock without a mark that can have children, or Simon becoming human again) but not for malec. Like, the immortality issue got solved completely for Sizzy, although Simon should've died when he gave up his immortality, but Asmodeus easily made him alive again, when he couldn't do the same thing for Magnus? What was the difference? Simon should've been a corpse too, but it easily got fixed where as it couldn't be fixed for Magnus.
And also Tessa doesn't have a warlock mark making her inhuman (and causing her problem like the others!) and can have children, while warlocks shouldn't be able to do that (the whole reason why Warlocks can't bear children is that they're the offspring of humans and demons who are basically two different species, and therefore it makes them hybrids incapable of bearing children. It's a biology fact! It isn't sth made up, so I don't see how the offspring of a Shadowhunter and a demon who are also from two different species can bear children. When in biology, if you can have a living child, capable of bearing children, with another being, it shows YOU'RE BOTH FROM THE SAME SPECIES!! I know it's fantasy but it's not fair that it applies to all warlocks except one for no obvious reasons!)
So what I'm saying is that, basically malec immortality problem can be solved too, but it seems that it's not going to. Alec wouldn't want to become immortal, because he has a parabatai and they should die together, and Magnus can't become mortal without dying (even though the same problem got solved for Simon) and he WOULDN'T now, anyways, because that would mean Max will have no one for him.
Pufffff this is not me hating on any character or CC, I'm just nagging because I remembered immortality angst again today. My words are true though :(
@cassandraclare cmon, don’t be shy, give the people what they want 😤 (*cough* immortal malec *cough*)
Also, someone sent me a different post from this same account earlier today 👀 anon, are you that same person? Anon, why are you scrolling through an anti cc account sksksk
I lowkey disagree with your points about Tessa, cause her entire existence and the point of her character is to break all the rules of the shadow world. And I feel like it's important is remember that her father isn't just an ordinary demon but a fallen angel. That coupled with her mother's angelic heritage could be why she can have children. We already know that warlocks born to fallen angels show some exceptions - like how Magnus can light up a witchlight while other warlocks can't. As a biology student, I agree with your points about warlocks being a hybrid species ofc. This is just me speculating. Also, I don't think a warlock mark makes someone inhuman :)
And as for Simon and Magnus... afaik, Magnus has lived long beyond a normal human lifespan, which could be why he wouldn't be able to turn mortal without dying. Simon however is only 17, so he'd be fine. I honestly don't know enough about necromancy to know if Magnus could be revived or not :/ cause if his immortality is gone he'd be a 400 year old dead mortal. And just thinking of this is melting my brain sksksksk
Also, just remember that Tessa has it the same, if not worse as Magnus. She's immortal, and she has to live through losing a husband and her children twice. And unlike Magnus, she doesn't have an immortal child to keep her company either. 🤷‍♀️

Hi! I'm new to this and I don't know if I'm doing this right... Could you write a story about ghost James (not really come back as a ghost in wizard way but more like a ghost in muggle stories, the kind that no one can see and can't really do anything) watching (and maybe staying with) Sirius through the years and finally reunite with him behind the veil? And they live happily ever after in the other side?Thank you!
James hated it when Sirius was sad. It was his number one least favourite thing in the world. It was horrible to see. James was pretty sure that it started to rain specifically because Sirius was in a bad mood, sometimes. His proof of that was that it had never been sunny when Sirius was sad, and that was good enough for him. When Sirius was sad, it's like the whole planet sagged to join him in grief. He'd said that to Remus once, and Remus had replied that James couldn't possibly be more in love if he tried; James was pretty sure that his response to that had been that everyone could stand to be more in love with Sirius.
Point is, Sirius was sad, and it was James's fault. He couldn't make it better, and that was almost worse. There had been times, during first their friendship then their romantic relationship, that he'd made Sirius sad. Some stupid fight or other, and he would make Sirius cry because Sirius hated when they fought. He'd made Sirius sad before, but he'd never been incapable of comforting him afterwards.
He was dead. Sirius couldn't hear him or feel him. It didn't matter what James did, because as far as Sirius was concerned, nothing at all was happening. James could scream in his ear, and Sirius would hear nothing but waves and the distant echoes of the other prisoners. He knew this for a fact; he'd tried. Just in case. No one knew about the kind of ghost that he was, and he wasn't going to let Sirius be miserable just because he hadn't thought to try.
It had taken him a minute to understand what had happened when he appeared by Sirius's side. The details around his death were a bit fuzzy. He couldn't really remember what had happened, and he wasn't sure he wanted to. From the absolutely haunted expression on Sirius's face, it didn't seem like something he'd appreciate remembering.
It took James less than two days to figure out that nothing he did would get through to Sirius. Instead of constantly pestering him, he decided to do things that would make Sirius feel better. He talked. Shared stories even though they were all stories he'd heard before or had been there for.
After a couple weeks, James figured out how to make himself basically solid. It didn't help Sirius it all, but it made James feel better. He could lean his head against Sirius's shoulder without falling straight through him.
On the one hand, it was nice to be able to see Sirius even though he was dead. Spend time with him. On the other hand, he was pretty sure this was a version of hell. What had he done to get placed next to the person he loved most, but completely unable to communicate with him? He didn't know how he really felt about it. Twelve years of thinking about it, and he still didn't know.
*
James talked to hear his own voice. It's not like Sirius could hear him and feel better to know that he wasn't entirely alone.
Sometimes he felt like Sirius could hear him. Not as he was-- standing beside him-- but like a whisper to his conscience. An errant thought in his head that took purchase. It was wishful thinking, James knew that, but it made his existence feel important. Sirius didn't lay flat to stretch his legs because James said he should; he did it because he'd been curled up in a ball for so long that he was uncomfortable.
It still made James feel better.
*
"Er, Sirius? Is it just me, or does that look like Peter?" James asked, tilting his head to get a better look at the photo in the Prophet. Fudge wasn't holding it at the best angle for Sirius, but Sirius was smart; he saw it. He asked for the paper, and Fudge handed it right over.
James grinned at Sirius. "That's my Padfoot. Let's get out of this hellhole. It was putting you in a worse mood than normal." Not that there was any good measure for that. It had been so long since Sirius had been in a normal place that James only had memories for what it was like to see him smile. When the minister visited, the Dementors had to stay back a certain amount; it's why Sirius made conversation instead of telling him to bugger off, but it didn't exactly make him happy. He was just... less miserable.
*
If anyone could see James right now, they'd probably say that since he wasn't happy with what he was doing, he should stop. That was a load of bullocks. He was dead, what did it matter if he wasn't completely happy? His happiness was a non-issue. He had an entire afterlife that he could enjoy when Sirius was around to enjoy it with him. For now, it was more important to him that he keep an eye on Sirius. Even if he couldn't effect the world around him at all, he liked knowing what was going on.
There was a paralyzing fear in the back of his mind that if he left now, he'd never be able to find Sirius again.
*
"No no no," James said frantically, staring at where Peter transformed and ran away. He tried tugging on Sirius's arm, but obviously he couldn't feel it. "Sirius, he's getting away!"
But Sirius was more focused on making sure that Moony was okay and that the kids weren't going to get hurt-- or killed-- to worry about the way his own future was going.
It had run away. Peter was slippery. It was a miracle that they'd found him the first time, and James was certain that they wouldn't be able to find him a second time. In another life, James would be able to feel something like sympathy for him. In this life-- his afterlife, Sirius's first still-- he couldn't manage it. James had been beside Sirius for nearly every second of Azkaban, and there was no forgiving someone who put you in there.
Peter vanished, less than a speck in a dark night on a black ground, and James wanted to scream. So he did.
*
"This cave is depressing. I feel like you could find a better hiding spot."
Sirius glanced towards where the castle was, and James nodded.
"Yeah, I guess you wouldn't be this close to Harry anywhere else. I still think it's pretty damn risky. You should be on the beach. Soaking up the sun after so many years in Azkaban. I swear, that place is better classified as a dungeon. You could lay on the sand. Get some shades. Listen to your bloody muggle music and just breathe for once."
Sirius wrung his hands in the way that meant he was thinking about Harry. Worrying about him. Even if he went to the beach, he wouldn't be able to relax. He'd be there, wondering how Harry was doing. Wishing he could take him away but unable to do so. Sirius could make his way on his own in large part because he could turn into Padfoot, but Harry couldn't do that. A boy with a dog drew more attention than just a dog, not to mention that no one would just let Harry go missing.
*
Lily showed up once. James just about jumped out of his skin when she appeared on Sirius's other side at the long dining table in Grimmauld Place. "So this is where Sirius grew up," she mused, looking around at the décor. "Sort of explains why he was such a pretentious git when we were kids."
James stared at her for a long moment. "How are you here?"
"I don't really know," she said, frowning. "I thought about you, wondering where you were and." She held up her hands in a ta-da sort of way. "I should've guessed it was with Sirius."
"Are you going to stay?" he asked.
"I don't think I can. I'm here to visit. I visited Harry for a while, but I got... kicked away after a couple days. It's the longest I can stay before I have to take a break. I have no idea how you've managed to do this for the entire time."
"I haven't done anything," James argued. "I just woke up next to Sirius and never left."
"You woke up next to him?" Lily asked, eyebrows raised.
"Appeared next to him, whatever."
"No, that's not what I- Merlin, James. I always knew that you and Sirius were strangely close; I just didn't realise... well. Never mind. How's it been?" she asked, turning her attention to the man sat between them that couldn't hear a single word that was being said.
"Rough. He was in Azkaban for a murder he didn't commit, and now he's a fugitive because he broke out."
"He broke out? Of Azkaban? How the bloody hell did he do that?"
"That's a Marauder trade secret, Lils. Can't tell."
She narrowed her eyes at him. "You're so full of shite."
"Yep."
She glanced at Sirius again, and her expression softened to something sympathetic. "It's been that bad?"
"Yeah." James sighed, patting Sirius on the shoulder even though he couldn't feel it. "Yeah, it's been... not good."
*
Sirius got hit with a spell, and he was falling, and James knew that it wouldn't do any good but still tried to catch him.
Only it worked. Sirius landed in his arms, a heavy, warm weight. Sirius was as surprised by it as James. He tilted his head up and broke into a gut-wrenching smile. Equal parts sad and hopeful. "James?"
James mirrored the expression. He'd wanted Sirius. Not like this, though. Sirius was supposed to get his name cleared and live with Harry. He was supposed to have another seventy years alive so that he could remember what it was like to not be caged up. He wasn't supposed to meet James this soon. James even knew how he wanted for it to happen. Sirius was supposed to be free and happy, and then James would move on; Sirius wouldn't need him watching anymore because he'd be fine, and he could catch up with Lily-- see if she knew anything about this whole being-dead thing. "Hullo love."
*
It took Sirius a long time to stop marveling at the fact that he could now touch James and talk to him. In his own way, James was doing the same thing. He'd gotten so used to Sirius not being able to hear anything he said that he was pretty sure he hadn't shut up for the last twenty minutes, just so he could hear Sirius hum or say 'yeah' as he talked.
"How do you know all of that?" Sirius interrupted at some point. James had sort of been ranting at him for staying in Azkaban for so long, and then going to Grimmauld Place afterwards. Historically, those were the worst two places in Britain.
"I was with you."
"You mean, like, watching me?" Sirius asked, tilting his head slightly as he tried to wrap his head around it.
"No, I mean that I was with you. Since your first week in Azkaban."
"You... the whole time?" Sirius asked, voice breaking.
"Yeah," James said, giving him a small smile. "I couldn't leave you alone, Sirius. You were sad. I can't leave my Padfoot alone when he's sad."
Sirius pulled him in for another hug even though they'd never really let go of each other, clenching so tightly that James wouldn't have been able to get away even if he wanted to-- and he didn't. He could stay this way forever.
