Wondering What to Watch After Steven Universe?

Want more stories about kids with magical destinies? Try Tangled: The Series (or Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure, as it’s known in later seasons) or Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Tangled: The Series is honestly an excellent sequel to the movie. It builds on previously established lore (the Sundrop flower, mostly) to create a more thoroughly-realized world of magic and Rapunzel’s own journey of self-discovery outside her tower as she adjusts to being Princess.

Also, the sweeping camerawork for this 2-D animated series is beyond perfection. I mean, just look at this:

You do have to watch the actual movie Tangled and a short movie called Tangled Before Ever After before watching this series, though. That short movie introduces a few characters (one a major player) in the series to come. And it also explains why Rapunzel’s hair is long and blonde again lol.

Honestly, Avatar: The Last Airbender needs no introduction. It is the quintessential action/adventure cartoon.

If you haven’t watched it already and you adore great action/adventure shows with gorgeous animation, then you really should get on this.

Miss the wacky family beachside adventures from the earlier seasons? Watch Bob’s Burgers. For an adult-oriented comedy, it’s got a lot of heart, and you can’t help loving the Belcher family no matter what zany things they get themselves into. The first couple of seasons are little edgier with its humor, but overall, it’s a pretty fun, wholesome show.

Want a cartoon about a kid uncovering a weird, magical world? Try The Owl House, Hilda, or Bee and Puppycat.

To be fair, The Owl House more of a mash-up of Gravity Falls and Star vs. the Forces of Evil. It even has Alex Hirsch on as a voice actor voicing this cute, little dude:

Speaking of which, if you haven’t seen Gravity Falls yet, now would be a great time to do so! If uncovering mysteries and delving into strange lore is your thing, then you’ll love this cartoon.

Hilda is a Netflix Original series that’s super cute and wholesome. It’s fairly low stakes compared to the other cartoons on this list, as it’s more a chill magical slice-of-life cartoon.

Bee and Puppycat is another weird cartoon that’s more slice-of-life-like than the others on this list. I really like the color palates on this show, and it feels really dream-like to watch.

Want a cartoon about a kid with strange powers coming into their own? Try Epithet Erased or WordGirl!

Epithet Erased is a cartoon by the Youtuber JelloApocalypse (the guy who makes the “So This Is Basically...” videos), and it’s honestly fantastic. It has a lot of great humor, unique use of powers (called Epithets), and lovable, dorky characters. It’s free to watch on his Youtube channel, so give it a watch when you have the time!

WordGirl is a PBS Kids cartoon (ik, just hear me out) that’s honestly much funnier than it has a right to be (mostly due to the voice actors’ great improv). It’s been one of my favorites for a long time (and in fact one of the main reasons why I first created a Tumblr lol).

The characters all have big names attached to them (Tom Kenny as Doctor Two-Brains, Patton Oswalt as Tobey McCallister, Chris Parnell as The Narrator, Amy Sedaris as Ms. Davis/Rhyme, Grey DeLisle as Lady Redundant Woman, Cree Summer as Granny May, Fred Stoller as Chuck the Evil Sandwich-Making Guy, etc.).

It’s just a fun show even if it’s meant for younger audiences. Please give it a watch if you can.

2021 Year In Review

(stealing this format from a review I did for last year. It was a tag game I think but I’m too lazy to start that up. I say after writing all this out, haha.)

Top Five Films you watched in 2021:

Your Name, 2016 (the animation! The music! The angst! Ahhhhhhhh)

Dune, 2021 (absolutely stunning, cannot recommend enough, whether or not you’ve read the book)

Wolfwalkers, 2020 (I loved the first two films in the Irish Mythology trilogy and this one completely blew me away)

Black Widow, 2021 (found family, no romantic subplots which is practically unheard of, women kicking ass, and a canon ace character? Sign me tf up)

Weathering With You, 2019 (utterly adorable and I listened to The Great Escape afterwards on repeat for hours)

The Dragon Prince (Yes, we’ve been on hiatus for like 2 years. No, I don’t care. I rewatched it enough times to count)

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (recommended by @starsinyourskyes in retaliation for getting her hooked on the Stormlight Archive. Well, it worked. I’m obsessed, and I am absolute Royai trash)

Derry Girls (recommend by @iwillhaveamoonbase and her plethora of Sister Michael gifs. I laughed, I cried, good times)

The Wheel of Time (Siuanraine for the WIN. Also we're getting Aviendha next season right? Right??)

delicate by @lantur (FMA, a Riza Hawkeye character study spanning from pre-canon childhood to well post-canon. Plenty of Royai, naturally. Words cannot give justice to how good this fic is and how much I love it!)

snipers solve 99% of all problems by silentwalrus (okay so like. I’m not usually a crossover person but holyyyy frick frack this FMA/Harry Potter one is fun. Still ongoing and basically 80 chapters of Edward Elric bitching about wizards and saying fuck 3,000 times. I hadn’t laughed this hard since I read The Martian.)

Son of Thorns by @truthwatcher-vez (The Stormlight Archive; I’m admittedly wayyy behind on this one, but it’s a post-RoW fic centered on Renarin Kholin. He definitely deserves some time to shine after we were robbed of content for him in RoW 😤 The author’s Rlainarin series, Chasms Between, is also excellent!)

Controlled Burn by madelinescribbles @okiedoketm (FMA role reversal where Al & Ed are climbing the ranks of the military and Roy commits human transmutation, blinding himself and getting Riza stuck in a taxidermy hawk. Ongoing fic, the characterization is soooo on point despite the role reversal, and the plot is so intriguing!)

Five good/positive things that happened to you in 2021

Seeing friends again!! I got to go visit a good college friend I hadn't seen in years since we graduated, and another friend I'd only seen once since we graduated came to visit twice! (Why do all my friends live across the country?)

I wrote. So much. Fanfiction 🤣 Hit a major slump this fall when rising COVID cases in my area started to make work hellish again, but I'm starting to get back into it!

Started therapy for the first time back in May. Also recently started a new antidepressant, after a bad adverse reaction scared me off from them for a while. Still have a long ways to go, but I'm feeling much better, and I haven't had an anxiety attack at work since.

Realized I'm asexual! Which explains soooo much about my life 🤣 Still coming to terms with it in some respects, but simply knowing brings so much peace and pride in my identity.

I got a Tumblr in 2020 but this was the year I really started becoming active in a few fandoms and really connecting with people on here! It's been a blast, and I love freaking out about shared interests with you all💕

heya, i'm looking for fluffy jonmartin fics and a mutual said you'd be the best person to ask for recs? I tried getting into tma bc of all the fanart I'd seen for the podcast but i'm not hugely into horror, just the ship dynamic. canon divergence and aus are perfectly fine, even preferred, but I'd def appreciate fics that are canon compliant too would you mind pointing me in the right direction? thank you in advance and please no rush answering!

Fate, or Something by @protectmartinblackwood - First, the fandom classic of old.  An AU of season 1 where Martin doesn’t work at the Institute, and meets Jon on a blind date instead.  Pinnacle slow burn rivals-to-lovers.

Drawn to that Sort of Library Magic by @theyrejustboys - My favorite fic in the whole world!  An AU centered around a library, slow burn + found family to the MAX.  Also just a really amazing exploration of queer community with disabled and neurodivergent characters.  

gravity and waggery  by lyres - An AU where the archives team work in a creepy niche museum.  There are KITTENS and BONDING.  

A Catastrophe by salsareads - Two recs about cats in a row??  That’s just how I roll I guess.  Bookstore owner Jon and animal shelter worker Martin have a Meet Ugly and then...bond over cats!   Listen I just really love fics about bonding over cats.

Let Us Linger Now a Moment by Dathen - What the hell, I’m gonna throw my own little canon-compliant “bonding over cats” fic in here too. This one’s set during late season 3, but doesn’t rely a lot on canon knowledge.

found this cute guy on the merry-go-round? by abeebumbling - Not enough fics include Jon’s canon love of carousels!!  Cute fluffy AU where Martin works at the London Zoo and meets Jon there.

How Particular, My Fondness of You by cedarbranch - I’m noticing that half my slowburn recs are as much about friendship support as they are about romance.  That said, have a university AU that’s as much about Martin finding friends and a support network as much as it is about the cute Jon/Martin romance.

Ushio and Tora - FAVORITE dynamic, really like Ushio, short enough that I could finish and enjoy the whole thing without too much effort. Would even enjoy some more!

Rising of the Shield Hero - I think I finished the first season, but I'm not sure if there's more. Fun!

Owari no Seraph/Seraph of the End - vampires! possession! drama!

Bleach - One of my first ever anime! Kind of fizzled out during the drudge of vs. Arrancar fights, but I'm excited for the new season. High nostalgia value, currently reading the manga.

Dororo - lovely and dramatic

Haiku! - very low stakes and lighthearted fun

Free - fun sports anime with fun character dynamics!

Satsuriku no Tenshi/Angels of Death - this is a weird one where the show itself is actually too far into the horror/gore for me to enjoy on its own but i read quiet like a fight and that propelled me through a good chunk of it. the amount of anime I've started because of good fic might be embarrassing if I cared.

Magi - the sexism was really over my threshold but in between that i had fun

K/K Project - kind of weird but i watched the whole thing in one night and cried. Suoh is one of my favorite character types and Kenjiro Tsuda is one of my favorite VAs.

Seven Deadly Sins - definitely not on my rec list given the sexism but the dude in red (Greed?) is My Kind of Character so i skipped through a lot of it.

Partly watched and enjoyed:

Isekai Izakaya - certain shows I really love, but instead of watching them all at once, I pull out an episode whenever I'm in the mood. I pull this one out whenever I want to chill and see delicious food.

Trigun - fun, more or less the same as above! More episodic type anime usually falls under this category for me.

Tanaka-kun is Always Listless - another chill one that's firmly on my likes list even thought I haven't seen much of it

Mob Psycho 100 - REALLY liked the first season, haven't really been able to get into the second for whatever reason.

Kimetsu no Yaiba/Demon Slayer - Liked the first season! It doesn't quite have that special spark that makes me love it, but the lead is precious. I might continue.

My Hero Acadamia - I watched like until? season three? and had some kind of allergic reaction that has rendered me spectacularly indifferent. I enjoyed it at the time, though?

One Punch Man - kind of brainless fun for when I want the exact same thing repeatedly but in a funny way

Kamisama Kiss - Tomoe scratches a particular character itch for me but I keep getting frustrated by shoujo romance tropes I hate

Golden Kamuy - I really enjoyed the first season! and maybe season two, I'm not sure? I would like to finish this one sometime.

Rurouni Kenshin - the characters are a+ but some older shows are A Lot. I might try the manga instead?

Lupin III - I've seen some of the movies and enjoyed them, seen some of the shows and enjoyed them! an ongoing watch

The Ancient Magus' Bride - I get bothered by shows where female characters are rendered permanently delicate by circumstance or tropes (one of the things I dislike in Yona) and when it's combined with romance it can squick me really easily. This kinda walked the line? Enough that I stuck with it, and it's absolutely beautiful.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime - I lasted a lot longer watching this one, but see above! It was fun and lighthearted though, I might continue when I'm in the mood.

Sword Art Online - less bored and more baffled? I really liked the firsttttt....two? seasons? but then they kept jumping settings and I got frustrated.

Black Clover - eventually the shounen shows start to blur together and the first few episodes felt like Just More Shounen so I dropped it.

aww it would make me so happy if you listened to his album because of me!! he’s incredibly underrated especially since he’s signed to such a huge label like aomg you would think his fanbase would be a lot bigger. he’s also very good friends with zion.t and part of the vv:D crew (with loco, gray, crush and zion.t) so i can't help but love him. if you have the time i would say to listen to the whole 8 femmes album every song is incredible and it's genuinely one of the best albums i’ve ever listened to and if you can see the physical album it’s sooo pretty. but to name a few based on the other songs you seem to like i would suggest listening to rose, tattoo, melt and osaka! and you mentioned hoody before so i would suggest listening to friends with benefits too since she's featured on that! i think those are good songs for people wanting to get into his music!! if you give them a listen i would love to know what you think and i hope you like them!💓💓

ooo i used to love watching movies but these days i don’t really have the attention span for it. i’m more of a binge 5 whole seasons of a show in a day than watch a movie person so my movie taste is probably so embarrassing like i’m truly admitting this on tumblr dot com but i had a whole matt damon phase and a lot of his movies are still some of my favourites particularly good will hunting and the ocean’s and bourne movies. i literally used to have a movie blog with a matt damon url :/. and there’s a few movies from my childhood that i consider my favourites too like good burger and cool runnings! (if u know these movies then u have very good taste) i could easily watch these movies a million times and not get bored of them! i do appreciate a good animated movie but i definitely don’t watch them as much :( my movie taste isn't all that interesting though i just watch whatever is popular or whatever i've heard is good </3 i'm sure your taste in movies is far more exciting askdhasdkj

Three anime everyone should watch (not including FMAB, since that’s a given and you’ve already seen it):

Steins;Gate - Not many people talk about S;G anymore, but the people who have watched it pretty much unanimously love it. It’s about a man named Okabe and his friends who discover how to send messages to the past. But in doing so, they start to change their world too much, and suddenly all of their lives are in danger. Okabe has to undo the mistakes he made to save his friends’ lives and change the world back to the way it was. It’s a really cool time travel show! From what I have seen, most people who dropped it did so because it seems to move pretty slowly at first. I actually nearly dropped it too during my first watch, but upon rewatching I noticed that there are a lot of subtle hints dropped during the “slow” episodes that something horrible and tragic is about to happen. There’s this very faint, ever-growing feeling that something isn’t right, and suddenly it’s too late to fix anything.Time travel is a very very tiny theme in media, but I love it because it’s a great opportunity for pseudo-science and angst. The helplessness a main character feels as they try to fix things in a fucked up world when no one else around him even realizes how fucked up it is? 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽 Steins;Gate handles the angst and plot twists really well, and it also manages to avoid all the plot holes that often come with badly written time travel stories. I am usually of the mindset that if I need to wait more than 4-6 episodes for an anime to “get good,” then it’s not worth it. Steins;Gate is a very rare exception to that rule, and I think everyone should watch it!!

Barakamon - I am not a fan of children, so an anime about a misanthropic twenty-something-year-old spending a summer on a rural island with a bunch of country kids is not something I would typically even glance at. When I originally saw it on the Summer 2016 roster, I wrote it off instantly. But during the first week of the new season I had finished all my other anime, so I watched it out of pure boredom. And boy, was I FLOORED.Barakamon is a surprisingly charming and hilarious story. Handa, the main character, is relatable to the average dramatic grump like me who would prefer to stay indoors during the summer, away from the bugs and sunshine and nature in general. The children are actually realistic, unlike a lot of the children or children-passing lolis we often see in anime. They’re a tiny bit bratty and very mischievous, but it’s actually really refreshing and endearing. The situations they get themselves into are ridiculous and hilarious. And despite Handa avoiding them at first, he ends up getting very very attached to them, and them to him.I was very reluctant to like Barakamon, but the first episode completely charmed me, and every episode thereafter. The humor was rarely an overdone punchline, it was situational and felt very authentic. I still laugh a lot just thinking about some of the scenes!

Psycho Pass (season 1) - This is only regarding season 1. Don’t bother watching s2 or the movie. But Psycho Pass was a special show for me, not just because of the very fascinating world-building but because of the way it makes you think about how morality works. How do we decide what is good and what is bad? How do we determine if someone is guilty or innocent? How do we make the judgment on whether someone deserves punishment or forgiveness? Psycho Pass made me think about those questions in a way I never really had. It actually made me agree with the psychopathic villain for once, which had never happened to me beforehand. (I’m pretty black-and-white so I usually side with the good guys and hate the bad guys without questioning it.) I understood and agreed with the villain’s philosophies, and it was really intriguing to consider that anyone could become a villain if they twisted their thinking the wrong way. In addition, Psycho Pass also brings up an interesting point of what would happen if humans didn’t go through any kind of stress or hardship. It suggests that perhaps stress and trauma are...not good exactly, but perhaps essential to the human experience.In short, Psycho Pass made me think about humanity and morality in a way I never had before. Again I am only speaking for s1, since s2 and the movie fell off that trend, but s1 was a fantastic watch and perfectly fine as a standalone series.

Those are the two I recommend to everyone, regardless of what genres they prefer. Here are my other favorites: 

Haikyuu!! - If you’re a fan of sports anime, or would like to watch sports anime but don’t like the overdone sports moves, Haikyuu!! is a great watch. It’s funny, it’s inspiring, and the sports actually don’t defy the laws of physics. The characters are all very lovable and have a great dynamic.

Hunter x Hunter - If you’ve been looking for a fun action series, HxH is definitely worth it. It’s got great action and really cool storylines, and it has a fun shounen feel without being overbearingly so. It’s a pretty long one at 148 episodes, and I definitely understand how intimidating that can be, as someone who hesitates to watch even 2-cour series. But Hunter x Hunter was worth every single minute, and I cannot stress that enough. It’s so much fun to watch, the characters are so unique and interesting, and the last two arcs are Angst Central if that’s what you’re into. It’s got someone for action fans who love fluff and those who love angst, and I am so so glad I decided to watch it despite its episode count looming over my head. 

Kaichou wa Maid-sama! - If you love a good rom com, definitely check out KWMS! The animation is done in a way that brings out each of the characters’ charm and really adds to the energetic, cute feel of the show. I’ve rewatched it more times than I can count, and it never gets old!

Kimi ni Todoke - If you love rom coms but want a slow-paced romance, KnT will do that for you. It’s still really funny (first anime that made me laugh so hard I couldn’t breathe!), but the romance is slow and steady. Some people have complained that the romance is too slow, and while I won’t disagree, I think the show still did a great job showing a very shy girl slowly establishing deep relationships, both platonic and romantic, with kind people. 

Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou - Technically a rom com, but don’t expect too much romantic development! It’s more like a comedy anime with a side romantic plot. But there’s nothing wrong with that! I love the characters; they’re all super eccentric but go together perfectly. And don’t get me started on Brain Base’s gorgeous animation and the lovely soundtrack! Overall this is just a really pretty, aesthetic, feel-good fluff show. Perfect for casual laughs!

How do you headcanon the boys take care of themselves? Like self care. Like, when they need some down time, and time to themselves. I'd really enjoy seeing your take on that. :)

Mmm I enjoyed writing this request quite a bit. Thank you for sending it in nonnie I hope you enjoy!!

It should come as no surprise that when Gladio needs some seriously needed R&R he’ll go camping, usually by himself.  Nothing helps a man find his peace of mind quite like being out in nature.  He’ll find endless ways to busy himself, maybe finding new plants or following around herds of animals and just observing.  If he happens to choose a spot that’s near a lake he’ll definitely spend a few hours sitting on the dock or standing on the shoreline fishing, letting his mind wander and the strangely comforting sound of the cicadas wash over him.  When he comes back it’s almost like he’s five years younger now that the stress and tension he’d been holding in his body is gone.

As much as Noctis enjoys staying inside and napping, playing video games, etc., if he stays inside for too long it’ll actually take a toll on his mental state.  Being confined within the same space for so long will ultimately make his depression spike and it just turns into this really bad feedback loop as he’ll want to nap and be lazy even more.  So, when this begins to happen he’ll make his way to the royal greenhouse.  He has a lot of positive memories of him and his father in that place, so it’s relatively easy for him to smile as he reminisces.  Noctis will sit at the edge of the small fountain within the glass enclosure or he’ll climb into the hammock and let the warmth of the sun’s rays seep into his skin  He’ll likely fall asleep out there, but it’s okay because he’s surrounded by happy memories and the numerous butterflies watching over him. 

Prompto...hm I feel like Prompto would do something to just live in the moment.  His camera will be left at home, his phone will be left charging on the nightstand, and he’ll just go out and enjoy being alive you know?  He’ll strike up conversation with people he meets on the street or the waiter/ess at a restaurant.  Prompto is always quite concerned -- at least lowkey -- about making sure that he can capture all the good moments and while that’s all fine and good, sometimes he just needs a day to remind himself that memories are sometimes the best snapshots.  Not worrying about the right angle, whether he can find something to help frame the shot, etc. is very liberating to him and not worrying about social media helps him to disconnect and unwind.  By the end of the day he’s a little exhausted from walking everywhere but he also couldn’t possibly feel more fulfilled.

Ignis doesn’t necessarily have a specific thing he does like the others.  Instead, when he finds that he genuinely needs a day of R&R, he’ll make a day of doing whatever he wants.  It’s literally like that treat yo self day from parks and rec tbh.  I mean he doesn’t go spending tons of money and whatnot but he’ll treat himself to a nice meal, go to a museum or art show that he’s wanted to check out, or maybe even just stay home and be lazy, staying in his pajamas all day.  He does have a sketch book that he keeps in his nightstand drawer, so if he’s feeling inspired he may go out to the park and draw pieces of the scenery, the nature around him, or people that are walking by.  These days always feel like they go by much too quickly, but he does truly enjoy the time he gets to himself and it does just enough to help him release any tension and/or stress to go back to work the next day rejuvenated.
