ted lasso has been a fucking phenomenal show but if the writers completely fuck it up in the last episode i may have to quit cold turkey. or i will just pointedly entirely ignore the series finale and rewrite it myself.

Endless hours of late-night phone calls. More time spent on planes than inside each other’s arms. Weekends that were never quite long enough.
“Distance makes the heart grow fonder,” Spencer said.
He was nothing but supportive of your decision to take an internship on the other side of the country. There was no doubt that the two of you could make this work, you were soulmates after all.
“So fond it sometimes starts hurting,” you added.
Neither of you expected that what should have been a temporary arrangement could turn into something more permanent. But when you got offered a full-time position for your dream job, you had to make the most difficult decision of your life.
“You could come with me, you know,” you told him after letting him in on your decision to take the job offer. He only shook his head.
“Why is your job more important than mine?” You hissed, angry that he wasn’t even considering that option. When he didn’t answer, you added, “Why is your job more important than me?”
“I could ask you the same thing.”
Neither of you wanted to end this relationship but after that argument you knew it was inevitable. Spencer’s stubbornness stood in the way of him begging you to stay, even though you wished for nothing more than one of those cheesy airport scenes from the romcom movies you liked to watch together.
He never showed up, though.
It was hard to believe that all of that happened almost a year ago. The heartache never fully went away and it got worse now that you were back, walking the streets of a city you once called home. Your job made you happy for a while but after months of trying and failing to make new friends, you had to admit to yourself that you missed your old life.
And more than anything, you missed Spencer.
The city still felt familiar as you stepped closer to the apartment building you spent so many days and nights in. It was almost like no time had passed when you walked up the stairs to Spencer’s apartment. The hallway still carried the same scent of old wood and the steps still creaked underneath your feet. Before you had reached his door another memory flooded your mind.
Turning your head, you looked down the hallway and remembered how Spencer spun you around right there in a little impromptu dance when you came home from one of Rossi’s infamous dinner parties. You were happy then - some might even call you naive - and so convinced that you’d spend the rest of your life with the man of your dreams.
The more you got lost in reminiscing about times long gone, the more you could almost feel the warmth Spencer always radiated. Your skin started tingling where he used to press his palms against you, holding your close as if nothing could ever come between the two of you.
You sighed as you let those memories go. There were so many uncertainties as you stepped closer to his door. You weren’t sure if he still lived here and you didn’t know if he had found someone else to keep close since you left. The rational part of your brain knew that you should have called him before showing up, that he might not even want to see you.
But those past months you recognized that you were nothing but a fool when it came to love and romance. He didn’t show up at the airport for you but a part of you still believed he would take you back just like the people in those romcoms always did.
Relief washed over you when you found his name still written on the door of apartment 23.
Three knocks. No answer.
You lingered for a few moments to listen for any movement behind his door but there was none. Spencer wasn’t home and your life really wasn’t some corny movie.
As you walked away from his door you contemplated your options. Maybe you should send him a text or even write him a letter to let him know you’re back in town.
Or maybe you should just let it go.
Just when you reached the last step, a tall curly-haired man entered the building. You recognized him instantly, many moments before he even realized that you were there. He greeted the doorman before turning his head towards the staircase and spotting you.
Spencer’s face was impossible to read and looked nothing like you imagined whenever you dreamed about running into him again. Where you hoped to find a bright smile, only a thin line was visible. He looked as if he wasn’t sure you were real, as if he couldn’t trust his own eyes.
“Hi Spencer,” you broke the silence.
“H..Hi,” he stammered as he stepped closer. “What are you doing here?”
I’m trying to win you back. I came to tell you how much I miss you. I want to start over. I’m still in love with you.
There were many things you could have answered but none of the obvious explanations made it past your lips. Instead you said, “I have a job interview.”
Spencer was confused and raised his eyebrows. “In my building?”
“No, not here of course,” you awkwardly laughed. “I have a job interview here in DC tomorrow. And I thought I’d come by to say hi.”
Spencer just stood there like a doe caught in the headlights. It still seemed like he had a hard time processing what was happening.
Right when he wanted to open his mouth, a raven-haired woman entered the building behind him. She was almost as tall as him and absolutely gorgeous.
“Hey, are you ready to leave?” She asked when Spencer turned around to look at her.
“I’ll be there in a second,” he answered before finding your eyes again. “I’m sorry but now is not a good time. Can I call you later?”
Of course he had found someone else.
You were too late.
“Don't worry about it!” You said and quickly walked away from the most awkward situation you had ever been in.
When you were almost around the corner, you heard Spencer call out your name, followed by, “Please wait!”
Turning around, you found him running towards you. He slowed down the closer he got, coming to a halt about an arm-length away from you. He looked back and you followed his sight, spotting the woman getting into a car. She didn't drive away, instead it seemed like she was waiting for him.
It was as if you were struck by lightning when you suddenly felt Spencer's arms wrapping around you. A hug was the last thing you had expected in that moment. It took you a moment to reciprocate the gesture, your arms closing around his body as if no time had passed since you last got a chance to do that.
Never before had an embrace felt so healing. Like two lost puzzle pieces finally finding their way back to each other. You instantly felt the warmth he radiated entering your body and flooding through you.
For a few seconds it was nice to pretend that no time had passed but once you remembered her, reality came crashing down on you. You wanted him to be happy more than anything but you couldn't deny that you still wished it could be you who he’d find happiness with.
You were the first to let go, slowly stepping back to find his eyes. “I’m glad you found someone. She seems lovely,” you said while attempting to smile.
“What..? Oh you mean Tara?” He turned his head to look back at her car for a second. “She’s my new coworker. I’m actually on the job right now, it’s a local case. I was just stopping by the apartment to grab some books I needed.”
Oh.
“I really gotta get back to Quantico now. Where are you staying?”
You mentioned the name of the friend you were staying with and told him, “I’m sorry I came by unannounced. You usually have Sundays off so I thought I’d give it a try.”
Spencer smiled at you and said, “No, I’m glad you did. It might be late when I get back tonight but I would really like to talk more.”
“I’m still a night owl,” you snickered. “Just call me when you're on your way home.”
Several hours passed until your phone finally rang. The call was short, just a simple agreement you’d meet him at his place in about thirty minutes.
When you stood in front of his door this time, you almost didn't have the courage to knock. After taking a deep breath, you did it anyway.
As if he had been waiting right at the other side of the door, he opened immediately and let you step inside.
“I like the way you wear your hair now. It looks great,” he complimented you.
You noticed that he looked different, too. His hair was longer but his curls still seemed unruly. Just like they used to when you still had the chance to let your fingers brush through them.
You smiled at him. “You look good, too.”
It seemed like time had stood still inside his apartment. A few more books were scattered around and it looked a little more messy than what you were used to, but all in all it was still very familiar. Muscle memory led you to the same spot on his couch you always liked to sit in.
Spencer followed you, taking his seat beside you. It was hard to find the right words when you looked into his eyes. The color of his irises reminded you of wild honey, so warm and alluring you couldn't get enough of looking at them.
Before you got too lost, Spencer decided to start the conversation.
“So, you have a job interview tomorrow?”
“Yeah, I do,” you confirmed. “I want to move back here. I miss DC.”
I miss you, was what you really wanted to say.
“What about your job in Seattle?”
You just shrugged and mumbled, “I’m ready for something new, I guess. Seattle never felt like home.” After a moment of uncomfortable silence you added, “I never should have left.”
Spencer shook his head. “Eventually, you would have regretted not taking that chance. And you probably would have resented me for that.”
“I never thought I would be someone who chose career over love,” you confessed.
“It’s not that simple,” he disagreed. “I was just too stubborn and hurt to see it back then. It took several months until I could understand that I was trying to hold you back from starting a promising career. That wasn’t fair. I could have easily transferred to the Seattle field office or maybe start teaching at a university there. At the time you didn't have the same opportunities here in DC.”
His words surprised you. It was an admission you never thought you’d hear from him.
“You wanted to choose love and career by asking me to come with you,” he continued, his tone laced with pain. “I was the one who chose his career over love. And I really regret that.”
“Spencer,” you whispered as you moved closer to him. “I missed you so much.”
He reached out his hand to touch yours. “I missed you, too.”
His touch let something snap inside you, suddenly you were not able to hold back any longer. Without a warning your lips found his, feverishly kissing him as if you could somehow make up for lost time.
He didn't seem surprised about your display of affection. Instead he reciprocated the kiss with a similar amount of enthusiasm. It was not enough though, there was still too much space between you.
It was obvious that Spencer felt the same way, his hands pressing against your body until you had found your way into his lap. Between heavy breaths and lips brushing against one another, you started to forget your surroundings.
Your chest was pushed flush against his, your racing heart sensing its counterpart inside his ribcage and skipping several beats.
“Please, Spencer,” you whimpered against his lips, unable to let everything in your mind spill from your mouth.
I’m sorry for leaving you. Please give me another chance. I love you.
There was no need for those words to be spoken. Spencer understood anyway.
“I’m yours,” he cooed between more kisses. “I have always been yours.”

Watching this scene for the first time, an interesting thought popped in my head: this sounds like Trent from season 1.
I wish I could add a video clip, because the tone of his voice is extremely reminiscent of an early Trent, cold and distrusting of Ted's methods. A specific line that came to mind is:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, sure, this show loves a parallel. I'm sure there's no theory to extrapolate from this, I thought for a second. Until my rewatch of the episode, which brought with itself a revelation:
There are 3 times in "The Strings That Bind Us" when Trent enters a room and starts a conversation with Ted about Total Football by saying his name.
Tumblr media
Conversation 1: we have a colder Trent who questions Ted's choices as a football coach. This represents Trent from Season 1. I believe this calls back to their interactions before their dinner in 1.03, specifically the one I pointed out above.
UPDATE: As pointed out by @flamboyantcatastrophe, this is a DIRECT callback to their first ever conversation. Both times, Trent starts with "I just wanna make sure I have this right."
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Conversation 2: we have a friendly, curious Trent. He is fascinated by Ted's way of thinking, wants to know what's on his mind. If you go back to the episode and rewatch this scene, you may notice the flirty tone in his voice and the way he walks being reminiscent of him approaching Ted in the Crown and Anchor pub in 2.07. This represents Trent from Season 2. .
There is also a specific callback to one of their scenes from that season (arguably, their most pivotal by that point):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Like the man once said" // "As the man says"
Conversation 3 shows Trent having Total faith in Ted's methods, encouraging him and showing him full, unbridled support. This is obviously Trent from Season 3.
Tumblr media
As there are parallels to other TedTrent moments in the previous two instances, I wonder if this one will be paralleled in future episodes (maybe even the finale). It's easy to imagine a romantic scene similar to this one. Hell, this one is pretty romantic already. If you've watched one or two romcoms, you must be familiar with romantic leads racing through airports, barging in through chapel (or press conference room) doors, trying to reach their love interest before they get on the plane, say "I do" or otherwise do anything else that might cause the door to close on their potential happy ending. Thankfully, the love interest stops that door at the last moment, throwing it open, calling out the name of the one they love, the one they can't let get away.
Tumblr media
Another interesting bit is that Trent is shown picking up the rainbow mug and drinking from it between Conversations 1 and 2. Fitting, since C2 calls back to 2.12, and we know Trent came out before that. But could it actually be that he came out between Seasons 1 and 2?
Now let's talk a little bit about the Red String metaphor.
First things first, Jamie asks what's with the red string. The camera immediately cuts to Trent, who is wearing a red string bracelet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ted then explains what the red string symbolizes, and points out that said string is attached to the little fingers of soulmates.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Earlier in the episode, we have this shot of Trent's little finger pointing towards the red stripes on Ted's hoodie.
Tumblr media
And later in the episode, Trent wears a red lanyard around his neck.
Tumblr media
Something else I've noticed:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their first scene in this episode happens in the press room, where they first met.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the last scene of the episode, they are connected by a red wall.
Also, since their first scene in this episode calls back to their first meeting, could their last scene of the episode foreshadow their last scene together in the show?
I find it very interesting that in the "soulmates" episode, Ted's plot is book-ended by two scenes with Trent: one that happens in the room where they first met, one that is written like a scene in a romantic comedy. And between them, we have scenes that call back to the journey that brought them here. The thread of their history runs through this episode like an invisible red string, bringing them together, leading to an inevitable conclusion.

Thanksgiving
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Request: Jamie Drysdale Surprising you for thanksgiving
Authors Note: This was supposed to come out when it was canadian thanksgiving but i've moved it to america's thanksgiving. I'm not okay with the history of thanksgiving but i only do it for the food and to be with family.

Tumblr media
Jamie was standing at the door to your childhood home in Texas. He had heard so much about this home from you and how many fond memories you have in it. You were a bit upset at the thought of him not being able to spend thanksgiving with you due to having a game that day, because that was the day you were hoping he could meet your extended family, not just parents who he has already met before.
He had texted your parents about surprising you for thanksgiving as he needed to know where to go. Your dad had offered that he’d come pick him up from the airport but Jamie wanted to surprise you from the door like some cheesy romcom.
Jamie lifts his hand up with his hands shaking a little somewhat nervously to meet the rest of your family. He gently knocks on the hard wood door that had a Dallas cowboys wreath on the front of it which was christmas themed which he chuckled at.
You were in the kitchen helping your mom with the final touches on the green bean casserole when you heard the knock on the door and a somewhat holler from the couch from your dad “Somebody at the door for you y/n.”
You quickly wash your hands off drying them off on the cloth that sat by the sink before making your way to the door seeing the wandering looks from cousins thinking about who could be at the door as they and even you thought everyone is already here.
Jamie stood at the door hearing the chaos behind the door waiting for it to open excited to see for the first time in a couple of weeks as you both have been long distance for a bit as you were to spend a couple of weeks with your parents while he had a few away games.
You start to open the door getting the door unlocked then proceeding to open it then that was when you were faced with the shy canadian boy that came to surprise. He had the biggest grin on his face when you finally opened the door.
“Happy Thanksgiving Baby!” Jamie spoke holding out his arms for you to which you jumped into his arms holding your thighs grinning big. You wrapped your arms around his neck giving him a big hug.
“I missed you so much” Jamie spoke, hugging you back still holding you up by your thighs. You had put your head in his neck to which you moved to pull him into a kiss not caring that your family was behind you watching the whole scene unfold.
Jamie kisses back with a grin on his face hoping the moment would last forever but then he hears a cough behind you which makes him break the kiss and make eye contact with your dad which makes him go all shy.
Jamie sets you down so you can bring him inside which he also grabs the luggage he has beside him and you start to introduce him to your family and they all love him noticing how calm and quiet he is.
He got along well with your older cousins as they played college hockey so they were able to make some small talk about it while your grandma just thought he was the cutest thing. Your grandpa was a bit eff as he was your average southern grandpa but he warms up to him.
You sat in his lap resting your head on his shoulder with his arm wrapped around your waist. It wasn’t yucky pda, just lovely spending time with your family and him all just making small talk after dinner.
Jamie looked down at you with a smile on his face knowing you were the girl that would be his forever as when you weren't listening he asked your father if he could marry you but that’s another holiday surprise.

sorry to that man (brendan hunt) but i’m still choosing to believe the ending montage was a dream sequence so buckle up bc here’s why:
in the pilot episode ted tells beard that if they see each other in their dreams to goof around a little bit, so right off the bat there is a thinly veiled insinuation of some light magical realism and then of course the line about ted not being able to sleep on planes
so moving to the finale, ted was having serious doubts about leaving but wanted to believe it was the right thing to do, so this sets up the montage as his imagined, best-case scenarios and a kind of martyr-ism that he envisions for everyone he left behind to tell himself they’ll be fine without him
getting into it, we seen him go through each character with whom he had a real connection with in richmond:
rebecca: he could have heard about the dutch man from her or keeley so he imagines a rebecca getting sleepless in seattle type meet cute after he just mentioned a classic romcom "leave-cute" to her in the airport paired with the previous episode mentioning that SiS is his favorite ephron film, so it makes sense to want the "best" for rebecca’s life after him. (also worth noting that hannah even says in this interview to her that it feels like more of a possibility and a hint that she’s letting new love into her life but not a definitive ending. which also lol)
beard: he literally leaves the plane because he loves jane so ted concocts the weirdest, most surreal wedding between them in stonehenge that beard had mentioned them going to in the christmas episode, and because it feels so bizarre and almost incomprehensible but ted does wants to imagine him living his best beard-appropriate life
roy: he clearly respects him so much, enough to imagine him as the new coach of AFC Richmond, but understands roy’s inability to open up and how that could hinder his success professionally and personally, exactly as it did for him, and so then imagines bringing doctor sharon back to help him work through it and even imagines an army man to protect him because he never got a chance to give roy one himself. (sharon is also wearing green in this dream which is associated with safety re: the toy soldiers.) this one is also interesting bc roy opened up about his last season at chelsea saying that he wish he’d stuck around and just have fun rather than quit and leave but ted ends up doing exactly that—quitting and leaving
jamie: he imagines jamie reconciling with his father, clearly projecting that he never got a chance to do it with his own. we’ve always seen how jamie and his relationship with his father has brought out ted's own complicated feelings of fatherhood so it makes sense in ted’s dream scenario for him to gloss over the fact and create an happy, to him, vision of reconciliation
nate: nate being integrated back into the coaching staff and having a rich full life is all ted ever wished for him. we never really saw him arrive at the choice to truly forgive him but we understand through the scene with beard that he obviously did, and again in nate's return and his apology
sam: he truly does believe he’ll make the nigerian team one day, since he mentioned it back in season one after saying he was homesick and after not making it this season. also thought it was interesting we got no resolution with simi at sam’s restaurant which further proves it’s a dream because ted isn’t privy to that relationship, only we the audience are
keeley/rebecca: the women’s league is totally something he (and all of us) could see them doing together and i love that he imagines their personal and professional bond continue in something that is so special for both of them. he would have loved that :')
mae/the pub boys: he has just learned that rebecca sold 49% of the club back to the fans so of course he dreams that mae and the boys get their part of the shares since it’s a place that was a home to people who care deeply for AFC richmond and had warmed up and welcomed him in as well
trent: in another classic ted way, in trying to distance himself from the community in order to make peace with his decision to return to kansas, he imagines that trent took his advice and changed the title of the book from "the lasso way" to "the richmond way" which only makes sense in dream ted’s head because he can’t objectively define the impact he’s had on richmond and instead deflects it back to the community. but trent is a professional and in his objective opinion i truly believe he would stick to his original thesis that these changes and this coaching philosophy is 100% because of ted
roy/keeley/jamie: the last shot of him observing them together mirrors how he saw them after the man city game, and again, he’s not aware of the current dynamics between them so at the higgins' barbecue he imagines them as he last remembered them, happy, but not explicitly together in any specific coupling combination
higgins: of course he wants to imagine his found family still hanging out and actively being a found family outside of the club and he has fond memories of being at the higgins house with the whole gaggle at christmas, so this vignette is almost an amalgamation of all his best wishes come together, really working overtime to sell the idea that they will be happy without him
ADDITIONALLY we’ve also seen a flash forward used as a device in the show before in 212. but there we got specific time cards to let us know when it’s happening. in the finale, it’s much more abstract as a montage (you could even say lynchian, which the official ted lasso twitter account mentioned here) which is another reason to believe it could be a dream
then of course ted waking up after this sequence and just then arriving back to kansas and henry? it was only several hours vs. the weeks? months? years? that seemed to have passed in the dream sequence? the show doesn’t ever sway from its linear storytelling, so it's logical to show all of that while ted is sleeping because it’s not real and doesn’t affect the timeline, but for those who want that closure offers up possibilities of where the characters could end up through the filter of ted’s imagination

last twilight finale time for me and i'm going to jot my thoughts as i go and just post it altogether bc i don't want to fill the tag w nonsense to excess so lets go
4 minutes in and i'm already pissed off. 3 years my entire hole, ugh. where's that meme of a woman putting a toy out of a child's reach? i'm the woman the child is p'aof and the toy is fucking time skips
so glad mork got to fulfil his five minute dream of being part of the exploitative tourism sector decimating hawaii. cool love that for him, it's definitely better than finding healing through love and support or whatever
i hope they had fun with the mork porjai implication bait and switch, because night walked through the door and my only reaction was: well obviously -_-
and here's the man himself! aof why are you doing your stan lee cameo in THIS ep of all eps. you could have photoshopped yourself into the last twilight mountain scene like the teletubbies sun and i'd have been less fucked off w you right now
okay but i'm never too bitter to appreciate a nice little bookshop. this is cute. i hope the shelves have braille indicators or smth. would have been cool to see some practical accessibility considerations - evidence of what day has learned and how he's letting the ladder down for others. also where's his white cane? i thought he was finally using one?
the lighthearted tone of this flirting...i am being gaslit. rubbing sugar in my wounds doesn't feel any better than salt hey
i do love watching porjai get the full princess treatment though, she deserves it
their "adult" conversation over cake has me so weary. don't explain how you want me to interpret this narrative thanks, i'm a big girl with some, nay, muLTipLe brain cells. you can tell me it was all about mork pitying day and day not liking to be pitied, but i don't like being told what to think. it's a disservice to these full, multifaceted characters to turn them into informed-storytelling puppets
porjai is my ep highlight so far for real. namtan, the actress that you are and the beauty that you have in the bridal get up. nightporjai are so dark horse special to me. THIS. THIS is what i wanted for mork! to do the growing and the healing IN SUPPORT AND WITH LOVE TO STAND FIRM FROM AGHHH, not on the arse end of america for no reason at all
ah, the classic romcom airport dash, except i'm mad lmao butWAIT PORJAI DOING A GRIFT FOR LOVE SHE IS THE EP HERO!!!
oh christ. oh christ they're not are they?
no
no they are...oh my god. oh i'm. i've written this whole thing pissy over the relationship thing i didn't even. oh my god. i'm heartbroken.
"the worst page in my novel" i'm. i actually feel a little sick. how horrible. what an absolute reversal. they waited until the last 15 minutes to make my worst fear on seeing the very first trailer come true, they waited until my guard was down
to all my disabled buds out there, wherever you fall on the spectrum of weary to deeply hurt by this narrative decision: your happy ending is in no way reliant on you someday "getting better". you do not have to "get better" to be whole, to be worth loving, to find meaning and joy in your life. you are not incomplete.
this is so busted. i'm so incredibly disappointed by this turn. they cocked this up massively, i need to go make mashed potatoes bye

Gentle giant Jay being sad after you leave
When Jason finally pushed his plate away after spending a few minutes listlessly pushing food around, Clark raised an eyebrow, questioningly.
Jason didn't skip meals. He never had. A by-product of too many nights spent cold and hungry. So it was alarming to see him sulk out of the dining room. Not even bothering to excuse himself.
"He took Y/N to the airport this morning," Steph said by way of explanation.
"Didn't they break up?"
Bruce shook his head, "Not for long." He glanced at the untouched plate and sighed, "They got back together just in time for what I'm sure was a very dramatic scene-"
"Not really," Steph snorted. "I mean aside from Y/N crying but- I think that had more to do with the boys than anything."
"Boys?" Clark asked, confused. He'd only ever really talked to you in passing. The one time they'd all been to the Brass Bell for dinner you'd been working for most of it.
"Nephews," Cass said smiling. "Good monsters."
"Yeah." Steph said, "They cried so she cried- it was messy. I understand though. They're just old enough to remember their actual mom leaving so-"
Clark winced in sympathy and glanced towards the door Jason had stalked out of. "Yeesh."
"He'll be alright," Bruce said, smiling a little.
"He just has to feel a feeling about it," Dick said nodding.
"I still say he'll be out there by the end of the week," Tim snorted.
"It took him three for them to get back together," Steph pointed out.
Damian rolled his eyes and leaned back, folding his arms, "It's not like he'll never see her again-"
"Not the point, Dami," Dick said frowning. "He don't want-"
"Then he should go there and stop sulking," Damian snapped. "It's pathetic."
"$50 bucks says a week from now he's on a flight," Steph said to Tim grinning.
"Nothing doing," Tim said, mock scowling at her. "Not when you orchestrated the whole thing to start with."
"It's like a romcom I love it," Steph pouted.
"Very cute," Cass added.
"Whether Jay goes out there or not, I might go," Dick mused. "Y/N is the only bartender that makes long islands like I like-"
"Dick." Steph said miming a gag, "The long islands at the Brass Bell are just vodka with some pop on top for color."

Running Through the Airport Kind of Love
Little Superbat fic I wrote tonight because they're soft and Bruce deserves to be a secret sap
“That’s stupid.”
Clark resisted the urge to roll his eyes, settling instead for sending his boyfriend a wry, exasperated look. Bruce didn’t even glance at him, eyes glued to the movie he’d spent the last hour and a half ruthlessly critiquing.
And sure, it was an old cheesy romcom, not exactly something that required a whole lot of concentration and certainly not something he and Bruce would usually turn on, but after the week he’d had Clark just wanted something mindless to fill the silence while he let himself unwind.
Bruce had been busy with a case, and Clark had expected him to be too caught up in his own head to even notice there was something playing.
Evidently not. He’d spent nearly the entire time pointing out every little flaw, every plot hole, every contradiction of this poor movie that had probably come out before he was even a teenager.
It was, Clark reluctantly admitted to himself, a little endearing and worlds more entertaining than the movie itself.
“It’s not stupid,” Clark argued, only half paying attention to the predictably sappy scene on the screen. “It’s romantic.”
“Running through the airport for someone is not romantic,” Bruce said. “It’s obsessive and creepy.”
“I don’t think you and your contingency plans are in any place to talk about obsessive and creepy.”
Bruce scowled, but his focus stayed firmly fixated on the movie. “It’s a ridiculous trope.”
“It’s a grand romantic gesture.”
“It’s unrealistic,” Bruce insisted. “The airport. You can’t get past security without a boarding pass. You’d have to buy a ticket just to get to any of the terminals.”
Clark glanced at him. “Have you ever even flown commercially?”
“A few times,” Bruce admitted, his voice clipped, not bothering to hide his displeasure at the fact. “I prefer to fly myself. I don’t like airports.”
“I know, B.”
“The Batwing is faster than any commercial airline.”
“Uh huh.”
“I wouldn’t run through the airport,” Bruce continued, like his distaste of this romantic trope was a hill he needed to die on. “I wouldn’t go to an airport at all. It’s a stupid idea. I wouldn’t even be able to find their flight.”
This time Clark gave into the urge and rolled his eyes, turning back to the movie. “You could ask.”
“That ruins the point of showing up unannounced,” Bruce said. “I’d have to get through the gates, I’d have to know what time their flight was, what terminal- it’s insane.”
“It’s just a movie, Bruce,” Clark said, doing his best to hide the amused smile he couldn’t quite suppress. “Believe it or not, some people actually like this kind of stuff.”
“It’s ridiculous,” Bruce muttered again, crossing his arms. “I’d do it for you, obviously. But still.”
“You—” It took Clark a moment to register the words, the meaning, but when he did he felt that familiar pleasant tug at his heart, doing nothing to stop the grin spreading across his face, that light giddy feeling Bruce managed to pull from him at the most unexpected times spreading across his chest. All he could manage was a soft, “Oh,”
Bruce finally turned to him, eyebrow raised, scanning his face almost skeptically. “What?”
“No, it’s just…” he trailed off, smile softening as he reached forward to take Bruce’s hand in his own, squeezing gently. “That’s very sweet, B.”
Bruce just grunted, eyes dropping to his lap, but there was color dancing along his cheeks now. “I’d end the world for you. I can handle getting past airport security.”
Clark just laughed, soft and easy, letting their hands rest where they were, warm and intertwined. “You’re adorable.”
“Hn.” He turned his attention back to the movie, the next few moments passing in comfortable silence before he spoke again. “I still think it’s stupid when they do it in the movies.”
“It is a little.”
“They might let me through security without a boarding pass,” Bruce mused, ignoring Clark’s chuckling. “Especially the Gotham Airport.”
Clark gave up on watching the rest of the movie, turning his full attention to his boyfriend. “They might.”
“Well,” Bruce said, leaning back against the couch cushions. “We’ll just have to see if you ever decide to run away and catch an impromptu flight across the country.”
“I can fly, Bruce,” Clark reminded him, raising their joined hands to place a chaste kiss to Bruce’s knuckles. He smiled, catching blue eyes before softly adding, “And I’m not going anywhere without you.”

That airport scene between Spelivia was straight out classic romcoms. Like it has left a permanent smile on my face!!! Spencer and Olivia's growth is just amazing. The trip down memory lane, Beverly hills and sushi on Fridays all of it was just 👨‍🍳💋. Like it's hard shipping the main ship cause you have to fight for EVERYTHING but when watching episodes like this it's all worth it!!!!!
10/10 for all the Spelivia scenes.
Perfection!
I am glad we didn't get the proposal cause I need Spencer to make a BIG BIG deal out of proposing to Olivia. He needs to pull out all of the stops. And I know he's going to. Olivia deserves it and most importantly we deserve to see it.
I want a time jump DEFINITELY and I believe we are going to get it (at least one year) but we better get some flashbacks of them during the summer. Maybe he might go and visit for a week or so 🤞🤞🤞 I am sure his step daddy has racked up those miles with all his flying back and forth.
Season 6 was OTHs best season imo so I am hoping thats also true for AA.

Wait have u seen what happens later?! Is it good?
yeah, i did see it, i saw it in theaters yesterday! i went with my mum and we had such a good time!
as for if it's good or not... oh boy. let me start with the disclaimer that i am the judgemental bitch of the universe, i can't turn it off, i am insufferable and i know this. also, i was squinting the whole time because i need new glasses. embarrassing.
SO. there are absolutely good things about it, i would say. there are several scenes that will be sticking like fucking glue in my brain for the indefinite future. the premise is hella cute and the acting was good overall (in my extremely uneducated opinion)... both meg ryan and david duchovny are so ruthlessly endearing it makes me want to actually scream, and together they cooked up a few really magical moments.
when dd's character got tears in his eyes talking about his daughter, i wanted to throw up. never let that man cry in front of me again, i can't take it!!!!!! and any time they spent laughing together was, like, electric to me. meg ryan has such a warmth to her that hasn't faded in her time away from filmmaking, and seeing her again just filled me with good happy feelings. (also, some parts of it gave me the good old au brain itch, which is always a sign i'm invested.)
however, i will also say that the movie is rather long and does occasionally feel long. mostly because the writing isn't, like, spectacular. not bad, just not quite as glittering as i would want for a film with only two actors in it. i don't want to get into the writing too much, because then i will start going on forever, because like i said, i'm insufferable.
also. okay. this is probably such an annoying nitpick, but damn this movie reused a lot of b-roll. like, they recycled this one establishing shot (which reminded me of the shot of the arctic base in the x-files episode 'ice', by the way) what felt like fifteen times. which is a bummer, because they kind of used exterior shots like paragraph breaks. since, you know, there were no other characters to fall back on. that sometimes made the pacing feel weird. it did add to the kind of liminal, claustrophobic vibe of being stuck in an airport with your ex, though.
i read an interview with them about how they didn't have time or budget for doing loads of takes or reshoots, and i think that constraint was both a blessing and a curse. they got a lot of really good, organic moments that felt very alive that way! but there were also moments that didn't quite hit, moments that should have had more time in the editing bay or time to be worked out on set. i also seriously wish someone had punched up the writing a tiny bit more.
on the whole, i would say that it's pretty good. if you go in with hallmark movie expectations, you are sufficiently parasocially attached to the actors, or you just love romcoms, you will probably have an excellent time. if you want to see david duchovny hit a blunt and then choke, like me, you will have an especially excellent time. the characters were flawed and occasionally frustratingly out of touch (on purpose?? i don't know, i am simply too young and silly 😌), but they also had moments of depth and warmth and sincerity.
i liked it, in spite of my rabid need to critique everything on god's green earth. i will probably watch it again not on the big screen and see if i prefer it that way (i suspect i will).
also did i mention they get drunk and flirty. because they get drunk and flirty and it's soooooo damn cute.

There were threads a few weeks ago about how Ted Lasso used romcom tropes and then didn't go through with it and the number of people saying they didn't see it is...
And yet they had a whole scene where Ted is in the airport about to board his flight and Rebecca was THERE.
Like, c'mon. That is such a Romance Trope, it's a trope for a reason because it's a shorthand telling the audience what this scene should read.
But no, Ted Lasso writers thought it was 'subverting expectations' for them to use romcom tropes for a relationship they want to retain as platonic.
This is why there are people now who can't read a relationship that's been deliberately written as romantic because there's so much crossing the streams. There are already people who have a problem reading romance in a scene between two men or women when it's deliberately written that way, deliberately blurring the line between Happy Ever After romcom tropes with friendship tropes isn't cool and edgy.
It's misleading.
Also, this is a mark of how much romcoms have fallen out of favor because there are now a lot of people who aren't familiar with the romcom shorthand.
There are tropes for a reason, it's the language of the genre.
"Oh, they're just friends and they never had any romantic tension between them."
Fuck you. I have eyes, I know the tropes you're all playing it. It's not clever that you're 'subverting' it.

So:
I still think Ted and Rebecca are gonna be a thing. What type of thing, I'm not sure, but romantic for sure. There are small moments between them. Because they're friends and haven't hung out one on one lately, they haven't noticed them. But we, the audience, have. I don't think Suds would fake us out like that because then, narratively, what is the point of those small moments?
In short, this is the season 1 Liverpool episode all over again, except Rebecca's the one getting all the action
My bets are (in chronological order):
- Ted and Rebecca spend more time together as Ted continues to realize he wants to go home and Rebecca is struggling with the psychic stuff (because they both know the other is struggling too)
- Rebecca will get her heart broken by Mr. Dutch Man and will run to Ted, a la When Harry Met Sally
- A kiss!!! Or... more? 👀
- Awkward no-talking moments (Rebecca upset with herself for growing attached to/falling for Ted and he's leaving, meanwhile Ted is still bringing her biscuits and trying to talk to her)
- Rebecca realizes the biscuits are a metaphor for love and it's been there the whole time and runs to and through the airport, like all great romcoms, to stop Ted from going to Kansas
- He still goes, but promises to come back
- He comes back with Henry, and he, Henry, and Beard all go see West Ham/Nate (scene from trailer)
- HEA
Ta da!!!

4, 9, 17, & 25 for the writer ask 🫶🏻
Aww thanks for asking babe 💜
4. What’s a word that makes you go absolutely feral?
Out of context I don’t think there is such a word. But nestled nicely between other words in a lovely smutty passage? I really love the word ache. And brutal. I love the word brutal.
9. Do you believe in ghosts? This isn’t about writing I just wanna know
No. But I haven’t experienced significant deaths yet, so I reserve the right to change my mind.
17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.
I’m honestly not that big of a planner, so idk really, but .. re: love at first bite, I guess I can just vomit some of my thoughts here. Like I am trying to include a lot of typical romcom tropes, idk the names and I’m too lazy to look them up but just
-relationship based on lies & pretending to be somebody you’re not
-lies unveiled and then falling for ‘the real him’
-the guy who ‘fucks randos with headphones on’ (according to Greg anyway) meeting ‘the one’ and being fundamentally changed by love
-rich man falling for poor woman
-manic pixie dream girl -ish
-huge romantic gestures, I particularly love the idea of an airport declaration of love or running after your love in the rain but I’m not sure how that’ll play out yet
And I’m just trying to make them my own and make them .. a little more real, a little less sappy and cliche but ultimately it’s a love letter to cliches and I want that to show. A few other things I can mention just for fun:
-Gia’s sister Francesca, affectionately Franny, was born in France so their unimaginative parents literally gave her an Italian name that means ‘the Frenchman’ or ‘from France.’ People call her Francesca a lot, mostly in the sense of ‘when your mom calls you by your full name, you’re in trouble’
-Gia was named after a relative, possibly a great-grandmother. I named her after the Angelina Jolie movie Gia (1998) about the sad life of supermodel Gia Carangi. I saw the movie once sometime in the early 2000’s and never again, but the name stuck with me and shortly after that I saw Girl, Interrupted (1999) and for some time as a very young girl I was fascinated by Angelina Jolie and these tragic women she played. But that’s irrelevant.
-I don’t want to include a sex scene because it’s a romcom and an explicit sex scene would be very out of place, but also I can’t write anything without a sex scene. There’s definitely going to be a ‘fade to black’ moment and I’m probably going to release the scene as an extra tidbit because I’ll be writing it anyway.
(I hope nobody wanted a cohesive answer from me.)
25. What is a weird, hyper-specific detail you know about one of your characters that is completely irrelevant to the story?
Avery Taylor’s mother is very much alive. She lives in Florida and works as a pageant coach for teenage girls ages 13-19. She hasn’t seen Avery since Avery was five and they both prefer that, but for very different reasons. When the Jimenez scandal broke, she learned what became of her daughter and wondered what would’ve happened if she never left. This was the second time she wondered that; the first time was when she found out about Avery’s father’s suicide, People tell her she looks ‘like an older version of that girl on tv.’

last night was a biggie, rewatch-wise! i got through tkk movies part 2 & 3 and the first three episodes of ck. assorted mixed-up thoughts underneath the cut w/ varying degrees of coherency
psa: the below thoughts contain occasional subjective opinions from my dumb brain and those opinions should be given the respect they deserve (which is none)
tkk2: -honestly a solid sequel and i didn’t have a lot of thoughts on this one, because fr i was mainly chinhands-ing at everything kumiko did, and trying to work out the physics of chozen’s boobs. but look, here’s a couple i remember: -daniel really declared his love for miyagi at the airport gate like it was a proper romcom, he said that man’s my dad now and i’m his son sorry college bet
-ok no but really, they love/d each other so much and it makes me unhinged!!! that scene with them on the beach made me cry and cry
-was that bd wong?? -very nice of sato to say to miyagi ‘i will give you three days to mourn before i kill you, out of respect to the man whose still-warm corpse we are currently kneeling alongside’. ok thanks man -arrrrrrms -i got a little distracted at one point thinking about what johnny was doing during the events of the movie and if his neck still twinged sometimes and then i got even more distracted thinking about how i read somewhere once that one of the options floated for the third movie was bringing back johnny and then i got really, really distracted thinking about how good that coulda been, but then decided that i didn’t want it because if that had happened there might not have been a cobra kai, a terrible show that i am in love with speaking of the third movie……………
tkk3: -wheeeeeeeeeew boy. i have not rewatched this one since i was a child and i gotta say, i’m with ralph on this
-kudos to TIG tho for chewing the absolute life out of the scenery and providing some comedic respite from the racial slurs and whatever else was going on with this movie.
-(the randee cameo was nice too) -something that did strike me – the daniel in this one really felt a lot like ck daniel. i mean, they all do at various times (ck okinawa daniel feels like tkk okinawa daniel and etc), but there was something timely about the daniel in this one that really felt like oh. you know? the self-recrimination, the scattershot anger, the rambling and flailing and loss of control. i think because i hadn’t seen it again since looooong before watching ck, it really gave his actions in s4 a little more clarity for me. of course he’s clinging to miyagi do, of course he is. of course the random outbursts of anger are coming back. of course he’s terrified of terry winning and wanting to stop him at all costs. of course he’s going to spiral of course. it wasn’t like i *didn’t* get it before but it made it hit a little harder you know? and i am very scared about s5 and i need to protect this pretend man
aaaaaand we are onto ck!! already!! so much for moderation! (sidenote: daniel-enjoyers, i highly recommend going straight from watching tkk movies to watching ck. it is a Trip to see how very little his mannerisms have changed over the years. he really is that bouncy little guy!!! he just got old. which i mean, that’s exactly the case, it is the same guy playing the same guy, and of course he is still him, but it is still delightful to observe somehow. it made my heart do things)
anyway, thoughts on ck s101 -jlawz looks good with a beard but it probably smells so bad  :( -also i always forget his first audible sentence is “great, more immigrants” and i think it’s because i repress it on purpose. -in the same vein. if i ever have to hear anyone talk about laura lawrence’s vag again i will walk into the sea -baby brace-face miguel is a sweet little angel. i know he and johnny are like miyagi and daniel redux but it’s cute how they’re kinda the mirror of them, rather than the copy. miyagi saves daniel, miguel saves johnny. johnny and daniel remain ridiculous no matter what; the true constant of the saga -not to say that driving away from a scene of an accident is a good thing to do but i would also drive away from drunk jlawz while he was having his little flashbacks breakdown too so.....??
-god the kids are all such wee babies in s1. mute lil eli! teeny nihilist demetri! adorable babby aisha with the science puns we hardly knew ye! (the show only cutting her, out of all the kids, gives sus vibes, but gonna save that rant for another time)
-both funny and deeply sad that while johnny spent all these years building daniel up in his head as the root of all the bad things that ever happened to him, daniel just assumed they were on really great terms (“friends and family discount” please i’m sick). he rly took ‘you’re alright larusso’ to heart while you know, johnny walked away and got almost killed and it felt like daniel’s win and by extension daniel took everything from him. i mean, that’s not even subtext right? it’s not that i don’t get it. but i do feel a little hurt on daniel’s behalf because he’s being so immediately, instinctively kind to him. maybe there’s a hint of smugness about the win and unintentional condescension in the mix but he really does spend the majority of the whole several minute interaction giving johnny free stuff and telling him how pretty he still is and just visibly beaming at him and i’m [sticks entire fist in mouth and screams] - jlawz deciding in that moment to start his own karate dojo is such a move. whatcha tryna do babe? tryna get back to the good old days where you kept putting your hands on that lil guy?? and you had each other’s angry undivided attention???? okay then!!
ck s102 -guys the little daniel montage at the start pls. i am unironically obsessed with daniel fistbumping his employees and making brekkie for his kids and drinking lil espressos with his wife. lookit him living his best life, i bet he smells amazing -well anyway those last moments of happiness and a normal blood pressure level for him were nice i think -i’m glad after s1 things got a bit less edgelord-y. i don’t know how to explain what i mean by that but ig the constant /don’t be a pussy/ and jokes about allergies and fat people and kids these days like it was kinda tiresome?? a bit?? to me?? ymmv but i’m glad they eased up on that shit. or at least made it more about johnny’s ignorance, so it wasn’t quite so… punchy-downy? ya know what i mean? if not, understandable.  -how many bathing suits does daniel have anyway? -the casting choices are very good all round but i personally think robby/tanner in partic is genius, because he gives such strong generic ‘80s teen heartthrob vibes. like when i first watched the show all i could see when i looked at him was jonathon brandis. accidental nostalgia boy, amazing -oh god the dinner with kyler. delete delete delete. if I don’t acknowledge it it didn’t happen!! -”i’m right here man”. i have never seen two angry grown men wanna kiss each other so bad in my life
ck s103 ok it was almost 2am by the time i watched this ep and i wrote just one thought in notes app, and frankly, i agree with my one 2am thought:

the worst feeling in the world is when you’re trying to help a super nice customer find what they’re looking for but you can’t find it.. and then they leave and you find it. I want to run after them like romcom airport scenes to let them know I found the shorts in size 10
