Hawkwind’s Nik Turner Dies at 82
- Multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter appeared on band’s first seven albums
Nik Turner, the multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter best known for his work with Hawkwind, has died.
Turner was 82; no cause of death was given.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Nik Turner - The Mighty Thunder Rider, who passed away peacefully at home (Nov. 10),” said a statement on his Facebook page.
“He has moved onto the next phase of his Cosmic Journey, guided by the love of his family, friends and fans.”
Turner played saxophone and flute, sung and co-wrote songs for Hawkwind from 1969-1976 and again from 1982-’84. He also formed the bands Sphynx and Inner City Unit and made solo albums; his most recent, Final Frontier, came out in 2019.
Turner’s time in Hawkwind overlapped with Lemmy’s and Mötorhead’s Facebook page urged fans to “play some Hawkwind nice and loud,” in Turner’s memory.
It’s impossible to be sad about the death of a man and musician like Turner, “one of life’s great enthusiasts,” Captain Sensible said in an online eulogy in which he remembered his friend sitting in on gigs and staying “way past the tune originally invited up for too - playing his heart out until the end of the set.”
“It’s the Western way to get all morose when someone special passes away, but when I heard about the loss of Nik Turner just now my mind just filled with a multitude of wonderful memories of the great man I knew,” Sensible said.
