Summary: You’re not sure how to deal with your current situation. Your owner, Byun Baekhyun, isn’t helping with the stress. But what happens when you find a risky solution that might just solve all your problems?

You feel the world stop around you. You look at Sehun with wide eyes, exhilaration filling you to the brim, electrifying your nerves, the sound of your heartbeat drumming in your ears.
You gesture quickly for him to enter the room, letting him sit down on the bed next to you. “Are you serious? How?”
He nods, then bites his lip, looking around nervously as if he’s afraid of being overheard. His face is serious. “You have to keep it between us though. Don’t let Baekhyun know.”
You frown. “Why? What exactly did you find?”
He takes a deep breath, looking down and fiddling with his fingers. “It’s not exactly…a fool-proof way. And it could potentially go wrong. I’m afraid if Baekhyun finds out, he won’t even attempt it.”
The exhilaration is replaced with worry now. “Tell me how first, and then I’ll think about it.”
“Well, I think I found a way to turn you into a vampire like us.” He says. “If we can somehow merge your blood with a vampire’s, I think it can work, since our blood has special properties. In small doses it could heal wounds, while large doses can be used as poison. If we can just get the amount right…”
Your eyes widen. You’re beginning to understand what he’s insinuating, the question like lead on your tongue. “You can potentially bring me back to life?”
He nods. “Or rather, preserve your life before it ends completely. Of course, there might be aftereffects. You might not be human anymore, but you’d be alive and so will the baby.”
You furrow your brows, thinking about it. It’s plausible. Also risky, but if you were to slowly increase the blood intake in small increments, you can avoid getting poisoned, at least.
You also understand why Sehun doesn’t want you to tell Baekhyun. If there’s a possibility of you becoming a vampire…you’re not sure he would be happy with that. Baekhyun doesn’t like his life as a vampire, he doesn’t want to live for an eternity, and surely he wouldn’t want that for you either.
Or maybe…maybe he would be happy? To spend eternity with you and your baby?
Uneasiness churns in your stomach, and you place a hand over your baby bump to calm yourself.
“You can think about it.” Sehun says. “You don’t have to make a decision right now. I think it would be best to do it when you’re in labor, there’ll be a small window where we can try to do it.”
“I’m worried about Baekhyun.” You admit, chewing your lip. “He’s working tirelessly to find a way to save both of us and I know he probably won’t die from fatigue but…” You frown at the floor.
“I know.” Sehun pats a hand on your knee to comfort you.
“And what if there’s aftereffects?” You continue. “For the baby? Right now it’s half-vampire, half-human. But if I were to turn into a vampire halfway into labor, what does that mean for the baby? Does it become full-vampire?”
You shake your head. “There are so many questions and…I’m scared.”
Sehun has an odd expression on his face, something like sadness—which you can understand—and…disappointment? “I get it. Don’t worry about it, I was just giving a suggestion. Maybe we’ll find another way.”
He stands up to leave, offering you a reassuring smile but it’s tight. Deep down you feel like there isn’t another way. You have to accept the risks or result in death.
You sigh, pinching the bridge of your nose as the door clicks shut, leaving you in darkness.
Baekhyun sighs, leaning back against his chair. He closes his eyes, honing in on Thorn, and even through the wall he can hear her gentle breaths, the steady beating of her heart. Faintly, he can even hear the baby’s heartbeat.
It’s still such a strange thought for him. He has a baby coming. He’s going to be a father.
What does that even mean? He doesn’t have the slightest inkling on how to act, what to do. He’s never taken care of anyone before; his brothers certainly don’t need his help with anything.
Will he be a good father? Or will he…
He sighs again, pressing his clasped hands against his forehead.
If the baby looks like him at all, he might want to kill it.
He can’t banish the evil thought. Can’t pretend it never occurred to him. If Thorn were to die during labor…if the baby comes out healthy and grows up to resemble either of them in any way, Baekhyun doesn’t think he could bear it.
It’s just…too much.
Which is why he’s determined not to let Thorn die. He knows how much she loves this baby, even if he can’t understand. He knows she would hate him if he were to hurt the baby in any way. She’d come back to haunt him for eternity.
And he knows that he won’t be able to stop himself from acting rash and violent if anything were to happen to her. So she can’t die. Definitely not.
But he’s been searching high and low for months now for a way to save her. He still comes up empty handed. He has a few potential theories that could work but…he’s skeptical about trying them.
He taps his pen against his notebook, focusing on the name he wrote down a while ago. He had left this idea hanging, his mind going numb when he thought about it too much.
But now that he’s revisiting it, maybe…?
He stands, chair scraping against the wooden floor as he hurries out the room. He walks down the hall, knocking on his brother’s room, quietly since he’s probably with his Pet, who must be asleep at this time.
The door opens slowly, Jongdae’s face poking out. His brother furrows his brows in surprise when he sees Baekhyun. “What’s up?”
“Can we talk?” He tilts his head towards his room and Jongdae nods. He closes the door quietly behind him, following Baekhyun back to his room.
Once Baekhyun closes his door, away from listening ears, he gestures for Jongdae to sit down next to him. “How’s it going with your Pet?”
A smile blooms on Jongdae’s face as he sits. “Pretty good. She seems to be completely over what happened with Victoria. She’s very affectionate.” Jongdae gives Baekhyun a sly wink.
“That’s good to hear.” Baekhyun says, strangely stiff and Jongdae frowns.
“So?” He raises a brow. “I doubt you called me over just to ask me about my Pet.”
“I wanted to ask about Victoria.” Baekhyun says, and Jongdae tenses. “Back then, you watched her die, didn’t you?”
Jongdae’s face darkens as he stares at his hands. “Yes.”
“You were sure she was dead?”
“Absolutely.” His voice trembles and cracks, eyes glazing over when he says, “I held her in my arms and she...was gone.”
“Then when she came back,” Baekhyun says carefully, looking right into Jongdae’s eyes, “she was certainly revived, wasn’t she?”
Jongdae hesitates, then nods. “What are you getting at, Baek?”
“If a vampire can be revived, is it possible to turn a human into a vampire?” Baekhyun asks, his hands clasped tightly together until his knuckles are white. “Since vampires have incredible self-healing capabilities and near-immortality—to be able to even bring a vampire back to life—perhaps if we used a vampire’s blood, we could save a human from the brink of death as well.”
“Whoa, whoa.” Jongdae waves his hands to slow Baekhyun down. “I don’t know how Victoria was able to come back to life…but you’re suggesting someone fed her blood to bring her back?”
“It seems like the only logical answer.”
“Who would’ve done that?” Jongdae frowns. “And why? Why Victoria?”
Baekhyun sighs. “I don’t know. I’m still piecing things together. I just want to know what you think, and whether it’s worth a try.”
Jongdae takes a moment to mull it over, tapping a finger against his chin. “Certainly, it’s a logical idea. It could be possible. But isn’t it too risky?”
“Yeah.” Baekhyun sighs. “There’s no knowing the effects on her body and the baby’s…and it’s hard to calculate just how much blood we’ll need.”
“Well we shouldn’t scrap the idea just yet.” Jongdae says. “Maybe we can expand on it and find a better solution. I think a vampire’s blood could be beneficial to her.”
“Yes, maybe.” Baekhyun falls into deep thought.
“Still.” Jongdae leans back on the chair, brows furrowed. “Who do you think revived Victoria? What are their motives?”
“Someone who has a grudge with you?” Baekhyun suggests. “Someone who knows about her, so it can’t be a human, since it happened so long ago. It must be a vampire as well. Perhaps a rival clan.”
“But what good would bringing Victoria back do?” Jongdae frowns. “She only wanted to be with me again, and tried to kill my Pet. She wouldn’t have done anything to the clan.”
“That’s true…” Baekhyun frowns. “Found anything on your patrols lately? Any new suspicious deaths or activity?”
“None noteworthy.”
“Strange.” Baekhyun looks down as he tries to think. “If it’s really someone who wants to cause trouble for us, there’s no way they would stop there. They should’ve made a move by now.”
“I agree.” Jongdae stands, offering Baekhyun a nod. “Let’s meet up with the others for a meeting soon and talk about this. I think the older hyungs may have a better idea of what to do. Yixing might have more knowledge about the blood transfer idea.” Jongdae hovers by the door, before turning and giving Baekhyun a small smile. “Good luck with the pregnancy.”
Baekhyun feels a sharp pang in his chest. “Thanks.”
You wake up to a body pressed gently against your back. You smile, turning and finding Baekhyun’s sleeping face. He looks so tired, dark circles under his eyes and his skin even paler than usual.
Pressing a hand to his cheek, it’s freezing. You frown. Has he been feeding properly? He’s cut back his feeding frequency, but could it be that he’s stopped altogether in order to spend more time researching?
You lean up to kiss him softly, feeling him stir against you, his eyes snapping open. You feel guilty for waking him up, even though he probably just got into bed. It’s been happening more ever since you became pregnant, but it’s still unusual for him to sleep with you like this. “Sorry, go back to sleep.”
He mumbles something, pulling you as close as your baby bump allows. His breath is cold against your forehead and you shiver. “I’m okay. How are you?”
“Good.” You can’t help the smile that grows on your face. You try your best to warm him up by wrapping your arms around him and pressing even closer to him. “Baby kicks in the middle of the night sometimes and I have to go to the bathroom a lot, but I’m happy.”
“That’s good.” He sighs against your hair, and you feel him relax. “What time is it?”
“It’s ten in the morning.”
He let’s out a soft groan. “Go, get some breakfast. I’ll be sleeping.”
“Alright.” You push yourself up, pecking him on the forehead before heading to the kitchen. You’ll be sure to let him sleep for a few hours at least.
Baekhyun blinks awake, finding a sliver of sunlight creeping in from the small gap between the curtains. That tells him it’s still daylight, he hasn’t slept nearly enough. He can hear some laughter downstairs from the Pets, Thorn’s voice standing out to him the most. He guesses it’s around mid-afternoon.
He pushes himself groggily out of bed, stumbling back to his own room. Though it’s comfortable in Thorn’s room, he finds himself too thirsty when he stays in there too long. She just smells so good.
He eyes the bed and wonders if he should get some more sleep. But he had a strange dream that gave him an unusual idea, something seems to click inside him, so Baekhyun chooses to sit down on his desk.
Baekhyun scribbles into his notebook again, history books and medical books open, scattered about on the desk and on the floor. He hadn’t bothered cleaning anything up. Talking with Jongdae last night cleared up some of his thoughts. Vocalizing them really helped him think, and hazy dream he had making a sliver of anxiety begin to brew. He churns ideas and theories and crazy speculation in his mind, scrawling them down in hopes to find some sort of coherency in all this mess.
And finally, he writes down a name that makes his mouth dry, his hands tremble.
Surely it’s not true. Surely he’s just being paranoid, anxious about the pregnancy and about Thorn’s fate. Surely he’s mistaken somehow, and picked up the wrong hints. Yes, that’s right. There’s nothing to make him speculate. No reason for this person to do such a thing.
But deep down he feels so uneasy.
He writes it right under Victoria’s name. He circles it, draws an arrow upwards, connecting their names and then by the side writes, “blood research?”
Could it be?

Side Tracks opinions part 1: Janus
(Yes I’m staring with Janus and going backwards, I just need to talk about this snake man right now!)
Alright, I’ve seen lots of people give their takes on each of the sides playlists, and honestly... I feel like they’re not all that similar to my interpretations. I mean yes anyone can interpret the songs how they’d like, but some people just flat out ignore canon to see the songs as their ship instead of what I believe they are actually meant to be seen as. Anyways... Janus! Yes let’s go through each song one by one 💛
1) Black Hole Sun: I’ll admit this one was hard for me. The song is obviously so Janus, with plenty of references to snakes and lying, but I can’t seem to put a finger on the exact meaning. If I had to guess, it’s showing Janus’ fist instance of fearing society. He’s realized that the world is not a safe place for Thomas and no one can be trusted (“Times are gone for honest men” “no one sings like you anymore”). He longs for the ignorance of childhood when society didn’t seem to pose a threat and Thomas wasn’t aware of the dangers and lies it held, but he knows that someone has to protect him from it, and that is Janus (“my youth I pray to keep” “hang my head, drown my fear”).
2) Seemed the Better Way: To me, this is a song about Janus knowing his place as a dark side and knowing that the others will not listen to him (“I better hold my tongue” “better take my place”). He initially trusts the core sides to do what needs to be done and take care of Thomas adequately, but when he realizes that it isnt enough, he finds it hard to keep in hiding (“Seemed the better way” “now it’s much too late to turn the other cheek”).
3) Anywhere: A BIG middle finger to society (“It’s a beautiful world, if youve been lied to” “No no no, nothing in this world is beautiful”). Janus basically trusts no one in society, not even the people closest to Thomas because he believes that everyone will do whatever it takes to get what they want (“Every man standing on another man’s back”). He also believes that society has been a huge detriment to Thomas and, AGAIN, is very dangerous (“It’s the world’s excuse for being disfigured and lying to you”).
4) Talking at the same time: This song is about Virgil. The song begins with explaining that a hard time for one person can be a triumph for another in multiple different metaphors (“Umbrellas cost more in the rain” “hard times for some, for others its sweet” “someone makes money when theres blood in the street”). The next part of the song practically shoves it in your face that it’s about virgil leaving (“Well she told me she would leave me, I ignored all the signs” “I know you're leaving and there's no more next time”). Janus was clearly hurt by Virgil leaving and it seems like he was almost in denial about it happening. A line near the end of the song that I found particularly interesting was “Well we bailed out all the millionaires, They've got the fruit, We've got the rind”. This line to me shows that Janus and the other dark sides let Virgil go, possibly in an attempt to get all of the dark sides accepted. Virgil capitalized on this opportunity and of course, got accepted, however, he left the others behind. Despite wanting Virgil to get accepted by the light sides, Janus remains bitter that Virgil was the only one. Virgil got the fruit, and the rest of the dark sides got the rind.
5) All the Good Girls go to Hell: Janus believes that Thomas needs to listen to him if he is going to stay safe and healthy. He thinks that his assistance, above all other sides, expecially Patton, is crucial for survival in this messed up world. (“And once the water starts to rise, And heaven's out of sight, She'll want the devil on her team” “Look at you needing me”). You’ll find it a common theme in this playlist that Janus refers to himself as the devil or an evil entity of some sort... Just thought I’d point that out.
6) Denial: Well, its in the title folks! Thomas is (or was) in denial. Janus is aware of the moments when Thomas thinks about consulting him or using one of his functions, but almost as soon as he gets the idea, he drops it and acts like the thought never happened (“Don't just shut your eyes closed” “You know that I can hear you thinking, I've heard you all the way from here, But if I look you in the eye though, It's like your thoughts all disappear”). Thomas is struggling for answers to questions that only Janus can answer, but he refuses to listen to consult him and Janus desperately wants this to stop (“I know you're looking for direction, I know where you wanna go” “Please don't turn the light out, I don't think the conversation's over”).
7) Trust in Me: Obviously, the original song has much more sinister undertones, but when listening to the song from Janus’ perspective, I get a different vibe. Basically, Janus just wants Thomas to trust him and give him more reign over decision making. Not much for this one.
8) Razzle Dazzle: JANUS IS EXTRA! Is anyone shocked? Also a HUGE showman. But again, no one’s surprised. Janus believes that the only way to get the light sides to listen to him is to practically put on a show to cover up whatever his true intentions are (“How can they see with sequins in their eyes?” “Razzle dazzle 'em And theyll never catch wise!” “How can they hear the truth above the roar?”) I could keep listing lines but theyre literally all just different versions of the same sentiment.
9) When the Chips are Down: The title right off the bat shows that, again, Janus believes that Thomas needs to look to him when important decisions are on the line. There are also a lump sum of jabs at patton in this song, lines like “Aim for the heart, shoot to kill” and “Cast your eyes to heaven, You get a knife in the back”. Theres also a lot of lines, yet again, of Janus practically begging Thomas to trust him and no one else (“Ain't nobody but yourself to trust” “Help yourself, To hell with the rest, Even the one who loves you best”).
10) Mandy goes to Med School: Soooo this one... Honestly, I don’t really have a lot. The original meaning of the song is not very applicable to Janus, so its a bit hard to pinpoint its meaning. The only thing I can think of is that Janus is again hating on society and the crazy things that people have to go through in it. If you weren’t aware, this song is about coat-hanger abortions.
11) I put a Spell on You: This one seems pretty striaghtforward to me. Janus knows that Thomas doesn’t want him, and it drives him up the wall, but he does what a snake boi does and slithers his way in anyways (“And I don't care if you don't want me, I'm yours right now” “I can't stand it 'cause you put me down”). I suppose you could argue that you could replace Thomas with Patton (mostly because daddy is used like 10 times in the song 😂) but a later song covers their realtionship extremely well.
12) Evil Night Together: Another toughie. My gut feeling is that this is a song about Remus and Janus just going out and having a wild night together. As I read into the lyrics more, though, it seems almost like Janus is doing this for Remus. Like he wants Remus to feel accepted and loved by him (something that can’t be said by Thomas). I just can’t read some of these lines without getting big Momceit vibes... i mean... theyre so supportive! “I'll hold your hand while they drag the river” “I'll cuddle you in the undertow” “I'll hold you close while they dust for prints”. Then theres of course this line... “Who's gonna make you a hero?” And to me, that is Janus saying that, if Thomas only sees Roman as his hero and not Remus, then it is Janus’ job to make Remus feel like a hero. Janus also saying “No need for cake or flowers” also feels like him reassuring Remus that he doesn’t need to be like his brother to be perfect and loved.
13) Don’t tell Mama: I think I’ve seen some people interpreting “mama” as Thomas in this song, but to me Patton seems like a better fit, especially after their interactions in the most recent episode. Basically this song is all about how Janus doesn’t mind people knowing about the bad things he does, but he can absolutely not have one person know. Janus seems to have grown a soft spot for Patton in the new episode and if you ask me, he would definately not want patton finding out about some of immoral things he’s wanted Thomas to do. I mean he literally waits for Patton to sink out and then the second he’s gone he starts scheming about pushing people down stairs and sabotage.
14) You’re a Cad: Another Virgil one, but this time it’s after Virgil’s acceptance. I think Janus has little faith in the beginning that Virgil would get far in his journey to the light side. Whether that is because of envy or just plain pessimism, I’m not sure, but he definately doubted Virgil would ever be able to escape his past (“So now you want the whole world to notice that you've come around, Now you expect, We'll see how you're really so much better now, But I know the truth” “What's the point pretending that you could be a better man, Just give in, since you always end up right back where you began”). Despite his reluctance to support Virgil’s endevors, Janus shows a softer side for Virgil that has gone completely untalked about in canon (“You're a rascal and a rogue, a villain and a crook, Still I tug at your line, I'm a fish on your hook” “Still I know the truth, but I have a sweet tooth for a Cad and a bounder, a dog and a cheap”). Janus really misses Virgil and I would go as far as to say that he regrets the things that he’s done to make Virgil want to leave (“I should be better, but I'm worse” “You're reckless with my heart, still I wait by the phone”).
15) As far as I can See: A sadie but a goodie. Janus doesn’t really understand love, but he’s sure that no one loves him (“As far as I can see Nobody loves me”). No one listens to him, no matter how much he shouts and cries. He doesn’t believe that anyone could love him if they are unwilling to hear him out and communicate with him (“As far as I can see, Nobody's listening” “And when I'm crying out, Nobody cries back for me”).
16) Criminal: AH MY FAVORITE SONG ON THE PLAYLIST! I LEGIT CRIED MY GUYS! Anyway. Janus LOVES Thomas. I would go as far to say that Janus loves Thomas more than any other side. Despite his lacking knowledge of love and what it feels like, he knows for a fact that what he feels for Thomas is the closest thing he will feel to love (“Because he's all I ever knew of love”). Now that thats out of the way, lets get to the juicy stuff... Janus feels like a criminal as he’s been taught over and over again that his opinions and thoughts are bad and harmful (“Cause I'm feelin' like a criminal” “I've done wrong and I wanna suffer for my sins”) This song is ultimately about Janus wanting to improve for Thomas, the one he loves the most. He knows that Thomas needs him, and the only way to get Thomas to listen is to get some help. Whose that help you might ask? Patton. Janus wants to be more helpful, but he doesnt know how. He’s envious of Patton’s ability to be accepted so easily, so he goes to him for advice (“I've come to you cause I need guidance to be true, And I just don't know where I can begin”). Janus wants to be redeemed in Thomas’ eyes, he wan’ts to escape the criminal appearance he’s been doomed to (“And I need to be redeemed, To the one I've sinned against”). He HATES some of the things he does to Thomas and some of the things he makes him think, but he doesn’t want to be forgiven, he believes that he deserves to be punished, but he still wants to get better for Thomas. He just doesn’t know how to do that (“Oh help me, but don't tell me to deny it, I've got to cleanse myself Of all these lies til I'm good enough for him”). Also, Janus sees Patton in a very very high place. He goes as far in this song to liken him to an angel while comparing himself, again, to the devil (“So what would an angel say, The devil wants to know”).
17) Change: The song is about, you guessed it, change! This to me is a continuation of the last song. Janus finally feels like things are changing in his favor (likely after the most recent episode). He was beginning to feel like there was no point in caring or trying, but now that he’s begining to see the light, he’s grown a bit hopeful (“Lately I've been thinking it's just someone else's job to care, Who am I to sympathize when no one gave a damn?” “Trying to find the power in me to be faithful” “Change is a powerful thing, I feel it coming in me”). With Patton’s help and acceptance, Janus is begining to feel worthy of Thomas again and begining to see the he has a voice (“Maybe by the time this song is done I’ll be able to be honest, capable, Of holding you in my arms without letting you fall when I don't feel beautiful Or stable”).
18) Devil in the Details: Janus worries again about his ability to help Thomas. He doesn’t believe that he can tell the difference between good and bad and he looks to Patton for that differentiation (“There was love I meant, there were accidents, So tell me which is which. 'Cause I just can't work it out” “I have, no way, of knowing,…”). There’s also an odd underlying message about doing something that he doesn’t want to do, but continues to do despite this and I’m not quite sure what that could be referring to (“And I know the cost, and I want to stop. But I can't do it, I just can't do it.”). It could simply be referring to him lying or deceiving others, but that seems too simple. I wish I had a better answer.
19) Come Little Children: ALSO MY FAVORITE SONG ON THE PLAYLIST! This is really big guys. This song practically confirms the fact that Janus was in charge of taking in and hiding the dark sides from Thomas (“Come little children, I'll take thee away Into a land of enchantment”). The song literally uses the phrase “My garden of shadows”, a clear metaphor for the hidden parts of Thomas’ mind where Janus keeps the dark sides. But it gets better... Janus pities these poor sides. He hates the way that society has forced them away from the light and into the shadows (“Follow sweet children, I'll show thee the way Through all the pain And the sorrows”). Not only does Janus feel bad for these sides and longs to protect them from the cruelness of the real world, but he LOVES them. He values every aspect of them and thinks they are beautiful and perfect. He cannot fathom why society wouldn’t also love see them this way and it frustrates him to hide such amazing traits from the world (“Weep not poor children For life is this way, Murdering beauty and passions”). Despite this sadness and dissapointment, Janus does his job and keeps the dark sides hidden away, knowing that society would never accept them for what they are (“Hush now dear children, It must be this way”).
20) Into the Unknown (no not the Frozen song): This song is VERY IMPORTANT. I have seen so many misinterpretations of this song, and granted mine could also be wrong, but please hear me out. This song comes right after the last song for a reason. The sides that Janus had once hidden away are now being shown to Thomas. He is literally going into the unknown (“Led through the mist, By the milk-light of moon, All that was lost, is revealed.” “Somewhere lost in the clouded annals of history, Lies a place that few have seen. A mysterious place, called The Unknown. Where long-forgotten stories are revealed to those who travel through the wood.”) Thomas is figuratively traveling through the wood by learning more about himself and traveling deeper into Janus’ previously mentioned Garden of Shadows. The song ends, beautifully framing Janus’ love for the sides he’s raised and hidden away, calling them “ The loveliest lies of all”....

Fic: Haven (39/50)
Summary: They say Resembool is a haven, and they’re right. Lush pastures, quaint country town, farmers’ markets on Saturdays: a bucolic paradise.
But it’s more than that. Resembool is a haven for the runaways, the deserters, the people who don’t want to be found…
The Resembool community knows there’s something odd about Hohenheim, but they’re not going to let that stop them helping him out. This is Resembool after all, a place where no one has to hide and neighbours help neighbours, be they building a fence, chasing a sheep, or trying to save the country from an evil they inadvertently helped release centuries ago…
Or: A series of slices of life in an AU in which Hohenheim never leaves, and several broken state alchemists find hope and home in Resembool.

Trisha’s pretty sure that she’s never had so many people in her garden. There hadn’t even been this many when she and Van got married. Still, they’re all being very polite and they’ve all brought their own flasks of tea, so at least she doesn’t have to play hostess.
It’s quite a motley crew who’ve gathered and Van has no idea why they’re there any more than she does. He’s just standing at the kitchen sink staring at them all out of the window with a wide-eyed expression of helplessness.
“Trisha…”
“Don’t ask me, love.”
“Is everyone here?” Ed and Al bound down the stairs and look out of the kitchen window. Ed gives a woop of triumph. “Perfect! It’s a bigger turnout than I thought we’d get.”
“Edward, are you telling me you invited half the village around to our garden without telling us?” Trisha gives her son an incredulous look. Ed has done a lot of weird and wonderful things in his time, but she thinks this one takes the cake.
He shrugs. “You’d have said no if we told you about the plan.”
“Well, you’re right there.” Van looks out into the garden again and lets out a squawk of alarm as there’s a knock at the door. It’s Tim, looking just as confused as Van. Trisha lets him in and he gives Ed a pointed look, shaking his head in despair.
“Ed, when you said ‘it takes a village’, I didn’t think you meant it quite so literally.”
“Why not? You can’t deny that we need the help, and we don’t need them all to be alchemists. We just need them to be willing to lend a hand, and you know that they all will be.”
“Will someone please tell me what’s going on?” Van pleads. “Edward, what have you done?”
“If we’re going to take on the Homunculus and the entire military, then we need more than just you lot,” Ed says, entirely pragmatically. “Sure, when it comes down to it, it’s probably best to leave the confrontation to the alchemists, but when it comes to preparation, everyone can help. The whole village knows what’s going on under Amestris; they’ve known for almost ten years now, and you know they’ve always been willing to help you out. So Al and I asked them to come and help.” He gestures towards the window. “And look how many people are willing.”
There’s another knock on the kitchen door and Trisha opens it to Fahim and what appears to be the majority of Resembool’s Ishvalan population.
“Are we too late?”
“No, you’re right on time. Come on, let’s do this.”
“I still don’t understand what it is we’re even doing,” Van protests as Ed shepherds everyone out of the kitchen and into the garden. Ab, Alex, Roy and Riza are also there among the throng, looking just as perplexed.
Ed waves his arms in the air to get everyone’s attention, and the hubbub of chatter that had been going strong dies down.
Trisha can only watch in dumbstruck amazement as her eldest son strides out in front of the gathered crowd and begins to speak.
“Thanks for coming everyone. I’m sure you all know why you’re here even if Mom and Dad don’t. Resembool is a village that’s always helped each other out no matter what. We’ve got the craziest mix of people here that would never normally get along, and we have a much higher ratio of alchemists in one village than we’ve got any right to, and we’ve always worked together.”
There’s a murmur of assent, but despite this, Ed falters for a moment, looking over towards Al and Trisha. Even though Trisha doesn’t know exactly where this is going, she gives Ed an encouraging nod. Everything he’s saying is completely true, after all.
“We all know what’s going on in Amestris at the moment,” Ed continues. “Maybe some of you have only found out recently, maybe some of you have known since you stopped my dad leaving town on a one-man mission to save the world ten years ago. Thanks for that, Joe. I don’t know what we would have done if he’d left. The fact is, the world still needs to be saved and you’re the only people we can rely on to do it.”
Al goes on to give a brief outline of what’s happening with the nationwide transmutation circle and Homunculus’s plans to use the population to power an immense Philosopher’s Stone.
“We have a way to fight back,” Ed says confidently. “Fahim’s created a reverse circle that will neutralise the alchemical null field that Homunculus has laid under the country. Dad can put an automatic fail safe in place that will break the nationwide transmutation circle if he and our friendly neighbourhood former state alchemists can’t take down Homunculus in time. But we’re going to need so much help to put these things in place. This is big, it spans the entire country, and we need to cover that amount of land to make sure we can protect everyone. We’re so good at looking after our own, but now we need to look after everyone else. So, will you please help us?”
Trisha feels Van’s arm come around her shoulders, and she glances sideways at him. He’s looking at Ed with so much wonder and pride. This was a fight that he always thought that he would have to undertake alone, a fight he thought would take him away from his family for years and years, and yet he is still here, and his family is helping him, and not only that, the entire rest of the village is willing to help him as well. Ed and Al are fielding questions left, right and centre, but there’s no hesitation in any of their neighbours’ faces. They want to help; they’re more concerned about potentially doing it wrong out of a lack of centuries of alchemical knowledge. They’re even offering to help out on the Promised Day itself despite Tim urging them to stay safe and out of the way here in Resembool.
Fahim steps in and starts organising preparations for distributing the components of the reverse circle, and Van gives her shoulders a squeeze before he too goes to get involved in the planning.
Although not before pulling Ed and Al in for a massive hug, to both of their surprise. Van’s never been the most tactile of fathers; even though he got a lot better with it after his aborted attempt to leave, there’s always been a part of him that still thinks of himself as a monster with the potential to taint the boys somehow.
He’s only just released them when Trisha grabs them and squeezes them tightly too.
“You’re remarkable,” she whispers to them. “But next time, please ask before you host a town hall in the garden.”

This could get longwinded, so it’s going under the cut...
1. What takes up too much of your time?
Admin related stuff at work. Chasing up appointments, making endless phone calls...
2. What makes your day better?
Lots of different things! An unexpected compliment, coming home to find my fella has bought us something extra special nice for dinner, getting snuggly and warm on the sofa watching one of my fave tv shows (I’m addicted to Luther, atm)
3. What’s the best thing to happen to you today?
I’d been given a work-related task to do that had the potential to be horrendously long-winded and time-consuming, but it turned out to be not nearly as bad as I’d thought it would!
4. What fictional place would you like to go to?
Middle earth, most definitely. I’d love to spend some time with the Hobbits!
5. Are you good at giving advice?
Uhhhmm... I suppose it depends on what kind of advice people are looking for. I’ll usually always try to give practical solutions to problems, and then find it difficult when there isn’t one I can give. I also worry so much that I might be giving bad advice that sometimes I’m afraid to say much at all.
6. Do you have a mental illness?
Luckily, I’ve always been blessed with fairly good mental health. I’m so thankful for that.
7. Have you ever experienced sleep paralysis?
Nope, and I have absolutely no desire to.
8. What musician inspired you the most?
It’s going to have to be BTS. I’ve never written for any other fandom as much as I have for this one.
9. Have you ever fallen in love?
I have, many a time. I’m a bit of a hopeless romantic tbh.
10. What’s your dream date?
I’m pretty traditional and boring like this, really! I guess it depends on what number date it is, too. I’m someone that embarrasses easily so I’d hate to be taken on something totally out of my comfort zone before I know that person really well.
Just going out to a movie and then getting something tasty to eat afterwards is good enough for me. Or maybe dinner and then drinks at a bar? Something where we’ve actually got time to talk to each other properly.
11. What do others notice about you?
Uhmm... apparently I have a nice smile!
12. What’s an annoying habit you have?
I don’t know quite how to describe this but I have a tendency to... ask questions as a way of hinting at things lol I remember one of my friends doing my nails once and I was like ‘oh... were you going to do ‘x/y/z’ too?’ and she was just like, Steph, if you want it doing just SAY that’s what you want, don’t just dance around it.
I guess that’s pretty annoying lol I’m sure there are other things, too.
13. Do you still talk to your first love?
HA. Noooooooooooooooo....

Oh dear. Uh. This might take a while.

I pro-choice, but I have to admit it starts to get my back up a little bit when people use it as a form of contraception rather than a last resort.

Seeing as it’s coming up next Tuesday, I’ve been asked this quite a lot just lately lol the only thing I can think of is a Fitbit, really. I’ve been working out quite a lot lately and I’d be interested to know what it’s looking like calorie-wise.
29. What are most people’s first impressions of you?
I have no idea! I hope they’re positive. I think most of the people I come across professionally tend to think I’m a lot younger than I actually am when they first meet me.
30. What age do you seem according to most people?
Ha, I didn’t even see this question before writing that last answer! Um, most people put me at around 23-25 when I ask them. Hopefully, it stays that way!
31. Where do you keep your phone while you’re sleeping?
Under my pillow. I know, I know, it’s a bad idea.
32. What word do you say the most?
I really don’t know. There’s nothing that sticks out particularly.
33. What’s the oldest age you would date?
Hm. I’d probably date a 40-year-old but no older than that. I think it’s all well and good at the age I am now, but a ten year age gap might really start making a difference as time goes on.
34. What’s the youngest age you would date?
I think 20 is my maximum, and even that seems a big gap this way around. Plus it really depends on the maturity of that person.
35. What job/career do most people say would suit you?
No-one’s really made that kind of observation in a very long time, to be honest. I know my manager is currently trying to get me ready and primed to take over when she retires, though lol
36. What’s your favourite music genre?
I like all sorts, really. I guess I’m a pop-rock girl at heart.
37. If you could live in any country in the world, where would it be?
Despite the rain, I quite like the UK! Although Australia would be a nice option if I could take all my family with me.

Ugh I made some delicious fried rice for breakfast this morning, and it's my day off!

One of the first settings that really drew me in was The Matrix to be completely frank with you. Or I really enjoy the waste and weird world of the Tank Girl series.

Good at giving, but not taking.

The therapist said I had mild anxiety and PTSD 🤷🏻♀️

Daydreaming, watching YouTube videos even though I have hundred other things to do and worrying too much

Talking to my friends, listening to music, singing, playing with my dog, playing videogames and taking long walks when the weather is good

Probably a 6 or 7, I'm a bit depressed but that's nothing new, but the thing that annoys me most right now is that I'm freezing my ass off in my room because it's cold and I don't have blankets :((

Hopefully having a job I like that pays well, having a little house or apartment and being in a healthy relationship
47. When did you first get your heartbreak?
When I was 15 because the guy I had a big crush on (we were best friends back then but are still good friends now) told me he's in love with my other best friend
48. At what age do you want to get married?
I don't really care that much about marrying someone, the thing that's important to me is that I have someone by my side who I love and who loves me, marrying is nice but it isn't 100% necessary for me, but if I would have to pick an age maybe around 30 or 35?
49. What career did you want to have as a child?
When I was younger I always wanted to be an archaeologist! ^^

2. What makes your day better? There’s a lot of things really - I’d say hearing one of my favourite songs, meeting a cat that let’s me pet it, a course at uni ending early, some good food, etc.
3. What’s the best thing that happened to you today? I went to buy medication for my grandma and she let me keep the change :3
4. What fictional place would you like to go? The school from Little Busters and then I’d give all of them a hug (and possibly flirt a whole lot with Kurugaya skdajflak)

What if it was a rape, what if there are no right surrounding for raising the baby.. only their mother can make that decision and we all should be supportive and caring, it is already hard enough for them

i got to sit down with a really good friend and we talked for like 2 hours but i also skipped my last 2 classes bc of it? whoops sorry not sorry

i don’t know why but the first place that popped into my head was the future from Meet the Robinsons LOL, tbh though any fic that’s been written where i get to be y/n would also be nice

P: Marvel or DC universe? But maybe just visit for like a week I don’t think I could handle a new super villain popping up every week
K: the Harry Potter verse,, wielding magic sounds pretty cool

P: I think I do sometimes, but rarely do I ever actually listen to it
K: only when I’m knowledgeable about the topic/have experienced it before. Other than that no lol

P: not one I am consciously aware of...

P: No, never
K: not that I remember.. I do however have a weird recollection of dreaming about bert and ernie from Sesame Street shuffling around my room when I was like 4 (lmao I just laid there in bed and watched them in the semi-darkness it was freaky)

P: Oh god uh Sunmi because she is an artist in every sense of the word and Ateez’s Hongjoong because of his work ethic and dedication
K: this is going to sound weird but Johnny from nct. his confidence and perspective on life is something that I look up to and respect (also I feel like he’s pretty hardworking cause dam 9 years as a trainee)

P: with myself, love yourself babies you deserve it🥰😤✊🏼🌸
K: Me and wonhos man tiddies are in a very committed relationship rn

P: Oh you know nice walk on a beach, watching movies cuddled up on a couch~
K: we’re def hitting the arcade, eating out at a nice restaurant, and if they’re also into art we could draw/paint together 🤩

P: My hair and the way I look, I’ve been told (even by my own mother) that I look intimidating which I DONT GET

P: Procrastinating and then having to go to sleep later than I need to
