Midnight.

Midnight, one of the times in the day where the mind rambles on and on like a fiddle in a play. The brain can be a huge enemy towards oneself, you can become your worst enemy, you hide the shadow of guilt and shame, a much better and more likable person you would rather be.

That is what Himari Kichiro thought, a young man starting to live his life from the ground up from his bootstraps. A boy from the countryside coming into Tokyo with family and no friends, only to be met with pleasant faces and delicious cuisines, a boy who never got the chance to blossom like the child he used to be, now he was a mere shell, a person who works for an underground facility.

Kichiro was alone, stuck in his own solitude and sulking in the corner of his bedroom. His fingers ran through the streaks of black and blond hair slowly as his different colored eyes fixated on his surroundings, what he heard, what he felt, what he smelled, every single of his five senses was in overdrive and it drove him insane.

His feet slowly dragged across the smooth, gentle carpet floor, as if they were a pillow of comfort and ease. The back of his head touching the cold, dry wall, not as comfortable as the carpet but nonetheless, it was something also that distracted him from his gloomy, lonesome aura. He heard footsteps, one, three, five, the numbers kept going higher as the more people his ears would pick up on, they also heard laughter, giggling, conversations, many more things that he would wish he never had heard.

Those moments would now become a blur, his mind distracted him with vivid memories of his childhood. The screaming, the wailing, the pleading. He jolted out of fear once the door opened, immediately going into survival mode and picking up a pillow before tip-toeing to the living room to see his roommate and boyfriend, Hoshino Tsubaki, setting down a few bags, smiling peacefully and then glancing over to see him frantic.

Immediately dropping everything, he rushed over to his aid, no injuries which was a relief, the raven-haired male was just about to ask him if he was okay until he grew flustered from how close they were, Tsubaki took a few steps back before apologizing with panic and had a slight blush on his face with an anxious smile. There was no reaction from Kichiro, besides craving that touch and amount of worry from his roommate, however that would make things awkward, tense and they would probably become something they would both want, but.. How?

“Hey,” Tsubaki started, fiddling with the hem of his shirt before picking up a bag of fast food he got.

“Wanna watch some anime and eat together?”

The blond’s ears became pink, then red as he accepted the offer with little hesitation, but as soon as the raven grabbed onto his hand, he felt the amount of anxiety and sorrow he felt in his heart had washed away, just from the touch and gestures alone he felt so safe.. So secure.. So.. Head over heels for a single person..

When they set up for their little dinner date, the air felt way more different than it was when Kichiro was alone, a piece of his heart was placed all back together when Tsubaki walked through that door with that blessing of a smile of his.. Now he was thinking of his new lover. How pathetic does he sound..?

That cute smile.

Those freckles that are dazzled across his face.

His beautiful green eyes.

That kissable scar on the right side of his eye.

There was so much more Kichiro could think of, but his mind was going so fast, he didn’t even realize that he was so close to the person he was with, laying on top of him as the anime played as background, his eyes slightly shut closed but struggling to stay open. He could hear Tsubaki stifle his laugh, watching the blond struggle as he was fighting his sleep like a toddler on a Saturday night.

“Had a rough day?” The raven whispered softly.

Even his voice was like a drug..

“...Yeah.” He responds back, curling up to his lover more.

“Don’t fight your sleep. Okay?”

Kichiro fell silent, his soft snores sounding like purrs against Tsubaki’s clothes, a few tears slipped through his eye sockets, feeling that sense of security and warmth just from the raven’s presence alone. Meanwhile, Tsubaki felt a wave of betterness and comfort, he too closed his eyes after putting the food back in the bag and just watched as his lover’s lips curved into a smile, just seeing him finally feel the happiness that he’s been wanting to feel for so long was just a miracle to see with his eyes.

“I’m so happy that we got to be together. Even after everything that we’ve gone through together.” He whispers to himself, giving the blond a gentle kiss before falling asleep right with his partner.

You're 6 years old right now. Well, physically. You do not have the patience to restrain myself from not talking all the time. Your babysitter is sleeping. You're infront of a tv. Remote beside you. Maybe, you should change it to a music show?

You're bored after all. No freedom so what else can you do? You change the channel to a music show. After you change it, The MC was announcing the winner for the music show.

"Let's congratulate, B-Komachi!" The MC exclaimed and the audiences roared at the mention of B-Komachi. The members went up the stage, taking the award.

"That girl... looks familiar." You muttered under your breath. A beautiful girl with a blue purplish hair color took the mic and start her speech while giving a heart gesture.

That's the girl you met before. She was interesting to say the least. Even from a first glance, you knew that she hailed from an abusive and solemn past. She was expressionless, she talked to you without any interest in the world and show the real her. To see her become an idol.. does that means she's lying to herself right now.

What drove her to be an idol? You met her only once and yet you feel like, she would be important later on. How captivating, you hope the future is kind to her.

"And that's all from me! Ai!" She waved and giving the mic to another member.

Idol. A career that isn't appreciate enough. Some people on the world looked down upon this career. Just singing and dancing, they said. It's more than that.

Idol need to have a perfect image. One wrong step, then scandal will come for them. Especially if you're a famous group. They have to lie. They have to please their fans. One mistake and it will be talk about for years even after disbanding. The entertainment industry is dangerous. Strict to the point they could take your life.

Idol is also human. They're not robot. They also have feelings. Idols are admirable, they need to have a strong mental to handle the hate. The world is unfair to them. There's so many cases on what happened to idols for the past years and some of it is cruel.

Every career have it's upside and downside. There's no need to compare.

You broke out of your thoughts when the front door opening. You didn't even realize your babysitter already went home. "[Name]." Your father called out to you. You stand up and walk towards him with a tiny smile on your face. Your father wasn't that bad now that you have observed him for 3 years.

He looks like he love your mother dearly. Before going to work, he would always give a kiss to the cheek on your mother. Your mother would blush a little. He carry you to his arm and bring you to his lap.

"I need you to make a decision, [Name]." He said with a stern tone. You tilt your head and nod. "Do you want the easy life or the hard life?" He added, starting into your eyes with a little smile.

You widen your eyes a little "I choose the hard life!" You give an eye closed smile to your father. You felt like being silly while saying that. You expect that if you choose the hard life, he would put you into the entertainment industry. This is the time for you to reveal how smart you are to your family. You aim to be the youngest people to be scouted into the world organization you were previously in. It is possible, in that organization there's no rules for age. You learn that when a child was born in that organization from a couple.

How's that child you see as a little sister figure doing? You hope she still love drawing and painting. Your plan starts now.

Your father sae the expression on your face and laugh "That's good, [Name]. In this world, there's no one living the easy life. Next week, you will follow me visit some director." Your father said with excitement. This is probably the second time you see him that excited — the first one being the time when you talk for 'first time'

He pat you on the head and left you alone on the couch. 'Did he do that just to left me on the couch?' You deadpan at your father but shrug it off. You lay on the couch and close your eyes, gathering the information you gotten for the 4 years you have been living in this new body.

One thing for sure, one of your friends had a baby at the same year you were born. You pray for the chances to meet the child. This time, there's no mistake. You want more connections than before.

"[Name], are you excited to see a child acting on the site?" Your father is driving the car to a filming site. He said the director is someone named Taishi Gotanda. You don't really remember the great things that Taishi guy have did since you weren't that keen on keeping up with the media world.

"Yeah! I'm excited! They're the same age as me, right?" You exclaimed. "No, you're the older one there." He said. Great, being the eldest means babysitting. Well, not if the children is discipline properly.

You arrive at the site and you scan around the site for a potential connection to be made with. Your father tap your back and you follow him behind his back. "Oh, Yoshino-san. Great to have you here." The Taishi guy shake your father's hand and he noticed you behind your father. You notice his eyes and smile while waving to him.

'This is boring.' You thought while walking a little bit away from your father. "Yoshino-chan, please follow me." A staff called out to you. You faced them and nod. "Your father said that you would only see how the process goes. You don't need to do any acting." The staff stated while leading you to a waiting room. You only hum at her to show that you're still listening to her.

'What a quiet kid...' The staff thought. The staff left you as soon as you arrive at the waiting room. You saw three kids and overhear their conversation. "Bet her acting was so bad they had to cut it all out! She seems to be good at buttering people up, though!" The child with red hair uttered.

The red hair proceed to be kinda rude in your opinion to other people. She left not before noticing you though. She look at you up and down and left. 'Is this how kids are?' You sweat at the child behavior. You look inside the room and saw two kids who you assume is twin because of the similarities. The annoyed expression on their face is visible, probably because of that girl? She's Arima Kana , if you remember correctly.

The girl who can flick a crying switch. Well, whatever. You bow at the twin and introduce yourself. They notice you and bow as well. "Oh, I'm Hoshino Ruby! And he's my brother. Hoshino Aquamarine but call him Aqua." The girl claim. What a weird name for japanese people.. The first thing you noticed about the pair is their eyes. It was captivating enough to lure you in. I'm sure they would become a big part of the entertainment industry. A powerful duo, they would say.

"Nice to meet you.." Aqua greet you with a neutral face. An opposite personality of his sister. A smile crawled up your face. "Soo.. why are you guys here?" You questions their presence at the filming site. "I will be acting while my sister here well.. she's just here, I guess." The boy deadpan. "How rude!" Ruby exclaimed.

You nod and cross your arm "It seems like Ruby is the same as me. I will only be watching." You hope that a friendship will bloom between you guys.

Amazing. You lightly smirk at the acting Aqua did. He only act like himself but he was incredibly creepy with it as that was what's the director aiming for. Maybe, the main part of it was because he seems mature for his age and his eyes. You just can't seem to let go of the beauty. "How did you think about it, [Name]?" Your father ask you with interest towards the young boy. "It's amazing, father. Can I start acting too?" You replied while staring at Arima Kana who was crying.

"It's never to late for you to be like your mother." Your father stated while lightly smiling at you "I can get you a role. Make sure to past my expectations." He added. Looks like the expectations for results is starting.

After that, your father have been keeping contacts with the twin since he have taken an interest on the young boy. You occasionally met the twin and learn more about them one by one. Sadly, your father couldn't keep hold of the them — Director Taishi Gotanda did.

You appear on multiple drama show as a child actor and made a name for yourself. There have been talks that you would conquer Arima Kana the child actor prodigy. You don't intend to do that but if that's what happen, it will happen. But they have to stop the comparison because every person have their own flaws.

You even got to do some photoshoot for a child's brand. Well, this will be memories in a few years. Atleast, you get to feel being a child again. A carefree child. Because of all the acting, you had to learn new skills everytime even things that you didn't learn in your past life. Naturally, you're good at it.

I guess you would still be a genius this time too.

When the death of Ai Hoshino happened, you attend the funeral with your parent. The people grieving over Ai's death make you recall the time your parent got into a bad accident and passed away because of that. You didn't cry because you had no connection to her but it still hurts to know that the stranger you have met before when they're a teenager to died when they almost turn into a full fledged adult.

You hope the people from Strawberry Production is taking their time to heal from the loss of a staff. You can only give prayers to them.

Later on, the death of Ai was just like a wind breeze that pass every day. No one talk about it after a week. Some may move on and some didn't. Ai Hoshino may you rest in peace.

A year of being in the entertainment industry — thanks to your father. You don't care if they call you a nepo baby. You're talented, that's all that matter. You were invited to a variety show and you were excited since you can freely show your talents there. No on can say a thing about it. No one will question it.

You met the cast and greet them. It was going well until they start talking about your acting career. "Yoshino-san, you really resemble your mother and your acting skill is incredible. Mind to share a tip?" The MC compliment your acting. "I can't because I am ME. I don't think much on what to do and just go with the flow." You said with a neutral tone. One thing about the entertainment industry, they won't question what the kids say since their still not mature for their age and just let out what's on their mind. Even if you have a sharp tongue, the people will love it. They don't mind it when a kid do it. At the very least, you have to have a character that will make people love you.

That would make people remember you for a long time.

"Yoshino-san, your father said before in an interview that you are a genius. Top at everything, is that true?" One of the cast commented. You smirk "Why don't you give me a question and let me answer it? I would prefer if it's a math question, though." With this, you will make moments for yourself. The cast laugh at your confidence and gave you a whiteboard. You will be competing with the 'smartest' cast, they said.

"69 x 4."

Ding!

A ring was made by you. The questions was too easy. As former scientist, you had to count percentage so this is a piece of cake for you. The cast beside you look at you bewildered. "276." You confidently said. "Correct!" The MC exclaimed. You know that they're looking down on you. You ought to prove them wrong.

After a series of questions, the people were speechless upon your smartness. The adults didn't expect this. Your mother look at you behind the swarm of staff and smile widely. You notice it and wave a little.

Soon, the filming ended. You were tired and hold out your arms to your mother. Your mom chuckle s and carry you up to her arms and kiss you on the cheeks. "You did good, my little angel." Your mother praises you. You snuggle up to her. Even though, you are an adult mentally but you want to indulge in this child body of your of receiving parent's love.

Even an adult wants to heal their inner child.

Ai has a curious way to see the love, for her lies are also a way to show love, puting the brightest and calculated smile along with sweet words, however with you she finds herself truly atracted and with a sincere happiness that slowly grows inside of her

Being an idol means that your relationship has to be a secret and most of the time you two can't be together or has to make excuses of who you are, but you don't really mind and completely understand the situation, you had even expressed how you do understand and support her in her job, you love her unconditionally and you know what you were getting into when you two started dating, and that makes her incredibly happy, this love and support is diferent from the one she recive from her fans, you are someone who knows her more, someone closer to her and yet you still love her as she is, even if you know she still keeps secrets that doesn't stop you from loving her

Since Ai doesn't has much free time most of the time you'll have to spend time with Ruby and Aqua too, so it won't take much time before all of you start to feel like a true family, for what Ai can't feel happier (and that probably give her more motivation to continue)

You had been a young nurse (you died from overworking) before being reborn as one of Ai's children..you were extremely shy growing up and whenever someone said that you were cute and precious..you would bury your red face in your mother's shoulder or you would hide behind Aqua. Mum's death hit you the hardest because you loved your mum dearly. You made the decision to became a violinist/musician and you became quite popular in regards to that because you were often a composer for movies and theatre performances.

You may be deemed as cold and standoffish at times but you were actually really kind.

Before your new life you grew up a bit and very close off wanting to focus on your studies just so you can have a good future. You went to school to become a nurse and you did. Honestly you loved your job as you got to know all about your patients some, one even got you into a certain idol, Ai.

But suddenly nurses or even doctors started to ask you to cover for them. At first you did not mind but out of nowhere it all became your work. It got worse when some of them just stopped doing their work. You would work for hours not getting sleep, food and or water. Your body soon gave out as your health was bad, you had died by overworking yourself.

But yet when your eyes are closed you open them to see Ai? From that day you were now the youngest daughter of your favorite idol.

You were still very shy as when you would go out at even the smallest compliment your face grew red and you would just hide yourself.

You were grateful for Ai as she had treated you so well as you remember the times your parents wouldn't care but you can that Ai cared about you and your siblings. But when Ai died you couldn't stop crying for days as it took both Aqua and Ruby to calm you down.

But you knew you had to move on so as you grew up you had wanted to do something new for your life as that what Ai would have wanted.

As you grew from child to teenager you didn't have many friends as some people would think you're just a rude and cold person but when they get to know you you are just shy and would blush when someone would make the slightest sweet comment about you.

And your older siblings were protected by you as yes you all wear the same uniform but outside of school your clothes are interesting, you may be shy but there are times you like to show your boldness. And after these two lost Ai they didn't want to lose you and know of your naive sweet nature they wanted to make sure you will be okay out in the big world.

Unlike your sister Ruby you didn't want to become an Idol and turned down her offer when she asked you to be her partner. But you confessed to both Aqua and Ruby that your dreams weren't in acting or being an Idol but it was to be a musician mainly a violinist.

Your siblings were encouraging you to follow your dreams as they would always come to your performances. While you were messing around with your violin you started to think about Ai not only was she a great mom but was still a young girl that sadly couldn't live her life out so without thinking you started playing.

And when you performed in front of a crowd many cried as it was both sad but if you really look deep you can find happiness. As it was weird as most of what you play was more cheerful but that proves that you can play any emotion.

That's when managers, producers, artists, musicians came up to you wanting to sign you or work with you.

I feel like in your future you would be putting on classical performances in big theaters, or your music would be in plays or musicals, or in ten backgrounds of songs, tv, and movies.

You had wanted to live a life that Ai would be proud of and that is to live a life you are happy with. You miss her as you do think of her and when you do you like to play a song for her hoping she'll hear it.

aand that's the end for now. a transitional chapter in between two arcs but a really good one. The separation between Kanda and Allen is really emotional.

and now, this mysterious library is on the horizon. Allen's identity is at stake. and this mysterious smiling individual (that shouldn't be Apo since he's been taken by the Noah, so maybe whoever the Librarian is and... this is a bad sign.)

and now. we wait.

i'm super hyped for the mysterious library though. Genuinely can't wait to see where it's going.

This is so quite random and kind of has no actual point to make, but I was scrolling over on Hoshino Katsura’s insta page and I saw you’ve like some of her posts and like, I’ve been following you for some two years now and knowing you know of D.Gray Man (which I’ve loved for 14 years) is really doing something to me lol

D. Gray Man was the first and only manga I attempted to read and I still love it dearly despite having lost the plot years ago lmao

just like Ichino and Aoyama, the others also couldn't help but practice even after their team disbanded

Abuyama often hosts bbq's at his place. He has a big yard so there's enough space for the whole team. Even invites the first raimon team sometimes

Sakisaka attracts every stray cat nearby. On his way home, he often forgets the time as he's so distracted by petting the lil guys. Ishikari lives near him so he always has to bring him home before it's dark

Speacing of Ishikari, he's the team's older brother. Makes sure everyone is safe at all time. Also, he really likes photography! Him and Akane hang out sometimes. While Akane focuses more on photographing people, Ishikari prefers scenerys and landscapes

Morisugi is more of a negative guy. It's rare to see him happy. But despite not showing it, he does enjoy playing soccer. He still was the last one to rejoin the team and had to be partly forced by the others (he just had trouble admitting he wanted to come back). He's in the same class as Kurama. They tag along a lot and before Minamisawa left, he was with them as well

Momoyama spends a lot time at the riverbank. He'd rather be at the beach but he can't afford going there often. He sleeps a lot, even during class. Forgets to do his homework a lot too

Hoshino is very into astrology. Knows everyones star signs better than themselves. He owns a ton of star hair clips in different colors and shapes

Aoyama is a very logical thinker. He enjoys escape games and puzzles and such. But he's also incredibly awkward and shy. Whenever he's out in public, he needs someone to hold onto. Mostly tugging at the other person's jacket/sleeve or holding their hand. Also, he has autism

Risuno is at the park a lot. He feed's the squirrels there. He remembers each of them and gives them names. He even thought of a story for each of them. It's almost like a soap

Mohi owns a pet chicken (that's canon!!) and he styled his hair to match with the chicken. He loves it dearly. When he was younger, he took his chicken to school. The teachers weren't amused

Ichino loves animals of any kind. He'll name you a bird breed you wouldn't believe existed. Even as a kid, he preferred reading animal encyclopedias over regular books. He also has adhd

she chuckled at herself, looking at the world surrounding her through wet and blurred eyes. nothing was clear anymore, her eyes, her mind, her heart. with each passing second, the aches of her head dulled. yet the ringing in her head grew, so much so it became unbearable.

the continuous rings echoed throughout kana's ears, accompanied by the loud thudding of her aching heart hammering inside her chest. everything was so loud, the cars that drove by beneath her feet as she stares at them with an emotion that could only be described as loneliness, the chatters of the people below that reached her ears like a whisper, and her own painfully pitiful whimpers as step by step, she finally reached the end of the building she was on.

she was staring down one last time, the breeze was cold, enough to make her shiver. although, she wasn't shivering just from the sheer cold of the harsh breeze thatmost people find comfort in, no.

she was shivering of the stress that tolled inside her body, the tears that dripped down her pale cheeks all the way down to her chin. kana stared down once more, an indescribable feeling surging throughout her whole, lifeless, and pale body.

she liked to say she led a good life. that she had a happy life.

but kana arima herself, knew that was a lie that meant to cover up. a lie that was forged in an attempt to forget, an attempt to forget the underlying sadness that she had lived her life through.

she took a step forward, holding her arms close in a pathetical attempt to feel loved. to feel what it was like once more what it is like to be held, to be hugged so dearly. yet all that came was the feeling of true agony. the feeling of pain and suffering. yet, despite the sadness that filled her, she smiled.

she smiled, ironically enough.

kana entered the room with glee, smiling to not only hold appearance but genuinely happy to once again meet her old friend. to meet someone she held dear to her heart.

but, as she stared through the plethora of people, she felt her heart break just a little bit more once again. kana's eyes scanned beloved aquamarine hoshino, along with akane alongside him. talking amongst themselves as they shared glasses of a few drinks.

she could almost scoff at her naivety as she felt her heart wrench just a bit more.

nevertheless, she trudged forward, opting for a drink to ease herself and questionable yet aching feeling of her heart. downing a glass, she felt better. but, much to her dismay, it was short lived as a bitter taste lingered on her lips. she frowned, never feeling as worse as this amongst other similar moments prior.

she brushed it off. deeming it as trouble prone. still, the aching didn't subside.

minutes quickly passed as hours, her mind hazy throughout the events that happened. it was then, then when it happened. the rings inside her ears became louder, as her inferiority grew at the sight infront of her.

oh.

light spots filling her eyes, as tears brimmed her eyes ever so slighty. there it was, aqua kissing someone. someone she never will be.

briskly walking, treading the line between running and walking, she excused herself from the debut party. saying she needed to attend urgent matters. urgent, she says. but the lingering words in her eyes meant different as she looked behind her.

she almost laughed at herself right then. she was somehow always watching from afar.

the cold, unwelcomed breeeze hugged her body, in the stead of her arms that were now above her body. everything was silent as kana got reminded of that memory. the bitter taste of the juice she drank had now returned to her tongue, despite the events prior happening months before.

she scanned her memories, wanting to at least enjoy her last moments in this cruel, unforgiving world. her search halted not soon after, finding a memory of her first performance. she giggled bitterly to herself as she remembers the events that played out that day.

"i've always loved you, aqua. and i always will, even from afar." that was when she smiled her last. again and again, the cycle of torment kana felt never ceased. she was always watching from afar, be it in the heavens.

it was always from afar.

My Review of [Oshi no Ko]

Oof. The spring anime season of 2023 was kinda lax with the sequels and reboots. This was welcoming news for me as I was happy to take on any and every new anime that dropped. And I was ready to give the top prize to Skip and Loafer or even My Love Story with Yamada-kun. But then, this anime smashed in like Jack Nicholson in The Shining. This anime was already seen as the most, highly-anticipated anime to enter this season. Of course, the creator also made Kaguya-sama. It’s going to be awesome! And that’s stiff competition as Demon Slayer and Dr. Stone both returned with positive feedback. On the day of its official release, the first episode alone was seen as #1 on all of MAL. Gee, how long did it take for the FMA fan-idiots to nuke the score of this series? About four weeks. Guys, get another hobby.

Besides becoming the #1 anime on MAL with just one episode out, Hidive received the highest amount of traffic to their website for the first time ever. The music video released by YOASOBI for Oshi no Ko trended for a full week and as of May 17, 2023, the video reached 100 million views. Add to that, YOASOBI’s single has been dominating on the global Billboard charts. Manga sales have exploded. This anime is definitely one to behold. Let’s hope that nothing happens to the anime to make it falter.

Before I talk about the synopsis, I should really go a little further when it comes to the first episode. We all know, the average anime episode is roughly 21-25 minutes as it varies. This of course doesn’t include the length and time of recaps, openings, ending themes, or previews. But then, you get several episodes that are 40-50 minutes. I call that the, “Aniplex wants your attention episode”. Yeah, it’s because most of those I see are in Aniplex animes. Especially the Monogatari series. But in most cases, these are just the first or last episode. I just learned to accept it and enjoy the extra-long episode of SAO or Demon Slayer. Plus, it’s just their way to fill in as much content for the season. Oshi no Ko’s first episode clocked in at a whopping 82 minutes. This first episode alone could have been a feature-length movie. Japan actually did put the first episode on the big screen weeks before the television premier. This seems to be a missed opportunity for Sentai Filmworks.

A REQUEST: I do have a request for those blindly stumbling upon this review. If you are reading this part and have not watched at least episode 1, I kindly ask that you close this page and go watch Oshi no Ko’s first episode. Do not even read the synopsis to the episode. It is best that you go in blind. If you have already done so, please disregard this message and let’s get at it!

Ai Hoshino is an idol in a group called B Komachi. She is loved all around Japan. One particular fan (Sarina) loves her dearly. It’s the one thing in her life that gives her joy as she is currently battling a rare form of brain cancer. She dies. She was only 12. A doctor (Gorou Amemiya) who befriended her kinda got into Ai shortly after Sarina’s death. And now he’s hooked. One day, Gorou gets the surprise of his life as one of his incoming patients is 20 weeks pregnant with twins. And surprise, it’s famous idol Ai Hoshino.

Oof. I’m sorry, seeing them talk to a 16-year-old girl who is pregnant is not a pleasant topic I like to talk about nowadays. You all know the country I hail from and how angry I get talking about real world topics.

Gorou took care of Ai for the next twenty weeks to ensure a safe and healthy delivery. The night Ai went into labor, Gorou was murdered by a man who asked him about the whereabouts of Ai. In his final moments, Gorou recalled a conversation he had with Sarina about what it would be like to be the children of a famous idol.

With that, Gorou died and is reincarnated as one of Ai’s twins (named Aqua). The other twin (named Ruby) was Sarina reincarnated. We watch Aqua and Ruby grow as Ai’s children. But their identies were shielded from the public due to fear of Ai’s career being ruined forever. Still though, when Ai is with her children, it’s some of the happiest moments of Ai’s life considering her life prior to idol fame was dreadful. As for the kids, Aqua got into acting and Ruby got into dancing. And even though it took several years, Ai’s popularity began to grow past just being a teen idol and was ready to perform at a super dome. This happiness was shattered.

The stalker that killed Ai’s doctor stabs Ai in her residence and with Aqua as a witness. In Ai’s final words, she was able to give out a sincere “I love you” to her children. Ai is dead. The stalker killed himself. The children’s biological father could be the source of all that has just occurred. Aqua is ready for revenge.

Now, at age 16 is when the real story begins for Aqua and Ruby. Ruby has ambitions of becoming an idol like her mother, but Aqua wants her to steer-clear away from that business because of what happened to their mother. That doesn’t stop Ruby’s ambitions as she ends up restarting her mother’s old idol group B Komachi. As for Aqua, he gets several television appearances. He has no interest in that stuff, but this is the only way to get answers about Ai and their possible biological father as he might be the key or the reason behind Ai’s demise.

BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: Oh good! Rie Takahashi is in the main cast. Oh…she plays Ai. That’s just sad. So, is Ai still technically a main character even though she gets killed by episode 1? Just curious! As for the sub, Sentai has a dub out. My premature thoughts went straight to Monica Rial. I’m sniffing around to see if she’s even in this. I can sense Rial up in here.

Okay, Monica Rial isn’t part of the main cast…but her sister is. I was close and thought that either one or both Rial sisters were going to be there. I thought these people did a good job considering the major hype to the anime. I know I usually never give glowing recommendations for any dub done by Sentai. This, they did fine with. This is my first time hearing most (if not all) the main cast.

JAPANESE CAST: *Aqua is played by Takeo Ootsuka (known for Tem on Beastars)

*Ruby is played by Yurie Igoma

*Ai is played by Rie Takahashi (known for Emilia on Re:Zero, Tomo on Tomo-chan is a Girl, Megumin on Konosuba, Ena on Laid-Back Camp, Sumi on Rent-A-Girlfriend, and Mash on Fate/Grand Order)

ENGLISH CAST: *Aqua is played by Jack Stansbury (known for Mendou on Urusei Yatsura 2022)

*Ruby is played by Alyssa Marek

*Ai is played by Donna Bella Litton (known for Ran on Urusei Yatsura 2022)

SHIPPING: This…can get really ewwie really fast.

Gorou’s obsession with Ai was borderline Lolita fetish. A grown-ass man obsessing over a 16-year-old idol can get really creepy really fast. I do give him props as he remained completely professional as Ai’s OB-GYN. Now, what happens when Gorou dies and is reborn as Aqua? Oh, he loves Ai! It’s just that Aqua was careful as humanly possible. That’s my tip-toeing around the scene where Aqua turns down being breast fed by Ai. Ruby doesn’t mind drinking from Ai’s teat.

16-year-old Aqua kept getting asked by his castmates for the reality show he was in what his ideal woman was. He tip-toes around it, but we all know he’s describing Ai. His mother! A woman who died over 10 years ago. And again, HIS MOTHER! Though, nobody else knows that fact so he just tip-toes around it by being as discreet as humanly possible. Because of Aqua’s looks, he’s a prime target for thirsty girls at his school. But thanks to the reality show he was in; he ends up in a fake relationship with Akane. Totally doesn’t help that Akane starts acting like Ai! Because those two “hooked up” during the reality show, they must keep up appearances with their relationship in the public eye.

We could end that shit topic here if not for little miss Kana being little miss tsundere whenever Aqua is around. Oh boy, Kana is a true tsundere here.

SADDEST MOMENT: That first episode killed it in more ways than one. There’s no doubt that every main character here has had their hardships in the past. Ai had parents that abandoned her and she winds up in an orphanage. When Ruby was Sarina, she was suffering from that rare brain cancer where it was a struggle just to walk. And as for Aqua, they never did find his original body. But I was not prepared for what happened when Ai answered that door in episode 1.

I was thinking that stalker guy was the father of Aqua and Ruby and we’re going to have this whole thing throughout the series. Instead, when I watched this guy try to kill Ai, I immediately got flashbacks of Selena. Oh yeah, who could forget that death?

Yes, everything about Ai’s final words killed me. The animation, the delivery, everything! And Rie Takahashi knocked it out of the park!

DO THESE STORIES LOOK FAMILIAR TO YOU?: So, I might be going out on several limbs here but hear me out. Watching Oshi no Ko, do you draw any kind of correlation to any character’s backstory and seen it with an actor who might have gone through this same sort of thing? This story delves into the dark side of the entertainment industry and mostly in Japan. But being American, I can’t help but draw connections to the sad stories I would see in the entertainment industry in the U.S.

When I watched a crazed fan attack Ai, I will always immediately think of what happened to Selena. Seeing Kana try to stay relevant due to being a child actor, I think of a lot of child stars that went on after the height of their careers and while there are some success stories, there’s…well, it didn’t end well for actors like Bobby Driscoll and Dana Plato. Look both of those up, it’s quite tragic. I know these are American actors and most of the story is revolved around what happens in the Japanese entertainment industry. I’m just using these an example because I learned about these tragedies and lived through some of them (especially Selena’s death). Despite all of those stories being decades old, a lot of dark things still take place in this day and age. And with the addition of social media, being an entertainer has become worse.

The Akane storyline…ouch. First of all, social media comments are toxic. I will admit, I used to “Egosurf” a lot in my 20s when I was somewhat relevant on certain sites. It did not do well for my mental health. But I’m not like Akane. I’m not an entertainer. I’m a dork that likes to write reviews for animes and proud of it. If someone on Tumblr tells me I suck, I just ignore it. I probably won’t even see it knowing me. Tee-hee! Back to the matter at hand though. Akane wasn’t really seen as anything special in the reality show she was in with Aqua. She didn’t stick out as much as her other co-stars. Despite it being kinda like a reality show, these kids are still acting or doing what their supervisors say. Akane decides to do something impulsive and it backfired. BADLY!

This resulted in people on social media exploding with hatred for Akane with the most disgusting of messages telling her she’ll never act again or just blunt ones that say “Just die”. Despite the episode clearly stating this is a “work of fiction”, you know they got inspired by the real-life tragedy of Hana Kimura. Kimura was a female professional wrestler for the most part. In 2019, she was in a reality show called Terrace House. During an episode, Kimura got in a verbal argument with one of the castmates. From what I’ve read, they asked her to stir the pot a bit and fight with the other castmate. After this episode aired, fans took to social media and posted a lot of hate-filled messages towards Kimura. This sent her in a deep depression. Two months after this episode aired and all of the horrible messages were blasted at top speed, Hana Kimura committed suicide.

I don’t want to say Oshi no Ko blatently used this one particular story for the Akane storyline. But I’m also not saying that either. This is eerily too similar. It also doesn’t help that this episode aired days before the anniversary of Kimura’s death. I know it’s coincidence, but weird-ass timing. Thank God Aqua saved her from jumping off the bridge. While Oshi no Ko is a work of fiction, what happened to Hana Kimura was not. And bullying the woman’s family is not helping anything whatsoever. Yes, Kimura’s mother is pissed at the anime for airing a story similar to the events that drove her daughter to suicide. She has that right! Don’t bully her because she’s mad at everyone involved with Oshi no Ko. If I was in her shoes, I’d probably be pissed too and for a long time too. Moving away from that dumpster fire…

And the biggest kudos goes to Hidive. At the end of episode 6, they put up a message to prevent suicide and well, you know what? I’m going to do so here too.

As someone who has unfortunately been in dark places like some of these characters, I encourage others to seek out help as well.

ENDING: Since the events of episode 1, we watched what Ruby and Aqua want to do with their lives. Ruby is committed to becoming an idol like her mother. Slowly throughout the season, she and Kana joined Ai’s old production company and started up the idol group Ai was in, B Komachi. It was just the two of them until the end of the reality show Aqua was in. That’s when Aqua suggested to his castmate Mem-Cho that she should become an idol in the B Komachi revival. This is an interesting mixture for an idol group with the daughter of an idol (though nobody knows that fact), a former child star, and a Youtuber that’s 25 going on 16 depending on her applications.

Kana puts up a brave face in front of Ruby and Mem-Cho. But you can tell that Kana is scared. She’s been tossed around since becoming older, nobody bought her single when she recorded songs, her own mother even gave up on her, and all of these rejections kinda caught up to Kana. Regardless, Kana went up on stage with Ruby and Mem-Cho as a rookie idol. B Komachi got their chance at an idol festival to perform. It’s a start compared to a lot idols in other animes. On stage, it was clear that the audience was mostly there for Mem-Cho due to her popularity through the reality show and her Youtube channel. But Ruby got some attention from an audience member who remembered the original B Komachi and noticed Ruby kinda got that same aura as Ai.

Kana felt a little despair while performing on stage. But then we get a déjà vu trip as Aqua is in the audience doing a glow stick dance. Yeah, it was a lot like what happened when Ai was performing, doubt was swarming her, and then the twins start doing a glow stick dance. I guess the performance went well. It’s just that after that we see more tsundere moments from Kana. Mem-Cho finally sees that Kana likes Aqua. And then there’s some friction when we learn that Kana and Akane know each other and are rivals. And when I say rivals, I mean they are like Ash Ketchum and Gary Oak in the first season rivals, they are catty bitches. They’ve been at it since they were children.

A popular anime is about to be adapted as a stage musical. Akane and Kana are set to be in this production. The gentleman that Aqua has been in contact for a while now set him up with a role in that same stage musical. This theater company was apparently where things changed for Ai when she was an up-and-coming idol.

Could this be Aqua’s big lead to possibly meeting his biological father? That’s a question that won’t be answered today. At least season two is greenlit.

Soooooo…after watching episode 1 and the hype that came along with it, did the rest of the season grab my attention? Yes. It totally did. I mean it wasn’t at the hype it was when I had just watched episode 1. After one viewing of episode one, I had to tell anyone who would listen to me that this was awesome. There were however several other episodes that grabbed me. Yes, it was the Akane-centered episodes. Let’s just say any time I saw moments with Kana and Ruby trying to do idol stuff before Mem-cho came were a little boring. I just felt like they were just there and nothing else. Probably just a reminder that yeah, they exist, now let’s go back to Aqua doing what he’s doing.

Am I excited for season two? Oh yes, I am. I’m doing my best not to look at any manga spoilers. It’s hard. Every so often, a spoiler drops on Twitter and you just want to look. Or someone on Youtube will say something about a new chapter and you just want to take a quickie. NOPE! I’m going to stay strong and just practice good patience.

No self control whatsoever! Not one iota of it. Whenever season two drops, it’s going to be a biggie. Will the anime continue to be a smashing hit when it returns? That’s for the future to decide. I truly hope for the best. As long as they stay with the original material and the same studio that’s animating it, I think we’ll be good. Full recommendation!

FINAL (IDIOTIC) THOUGHT: So, is Ai going to be the next member of Franchouchou on Zombieland Saga?

okay so they did start as a completely healthy relationship. but then that whole apocalypse thing happened and ellis died and katie couldn't get over it so she spent like. 200 years murdering people and stealing magic and generally obsessing over bringing her gf back to life. and then she had to basically sell her soul in the end but it worked! but then she decided the best course of action would be to uh. wipe her gf's memories of the sun going out ??? and try and convince her that she had just injured herself and was off work for a while. and then ellis kept figuring out that something was wrong and katie kept wiping her memories until ellis confronted her and managed to get away and ended up working with the rebellion that katie USED to help before she realised that they couldn't help her bring ellis back to life and then sold her soul to the guy who the rebellion was fighting against. and now katie has to fight the rebellion or he'll kill her gf. but also her gf is part of the rebellion. it's not even clear whether ellis broke up with her or not. she/it electrician butch x murderous former hr manager femme supremacy. also small note that the picrew isn't perfect cause i havent entirely decided their designs yet but oh well

Darling Nikki and Matejka met in 1524, after Nikki's mother's death, and got into a duel- proposed by Matejka- at the price of Nikki's soul. She ended up winning the fight, and was turned into a vampire. They stayed together afterwards due to both being immortal, and have known each other closely since then. The reason why we think they deserve to win is their extreme codependence: Matejka is extremely attached to Nikki, because she looks like his dead wife Esmé, whom he's still in love with. Nikki takes advantage of him and roleplays as Esmé during sex. This unhealthy attachment to Nikki began consuming his life, so they got into a fight and split up for nearly 100 years. This caused the both of them to become incredibly suicidal, as they'd known each other for 4 centuries at this point, and they barely knew how to live without each other. Even missing each other so dearly, their relationship has the tendency to be very unhealthy. Once, Nikki insulted Matejka's dead wife as a joke, and he almost dragged them out to the sun in an attempt to kill them. Another time, she tried to eat Matejka (due to being a cannibal), but thought his black blood was disgusting. They know each other like no one else does, but still have layer of distrust. Nikki doesn't even know Esmé's name. Altogether, their bond is an incredibly complex one due to the nature of their immortality, but their unhealthy overreliance on each other has nearly ruined both their lives.

Just finished rereading Yozora no Sumikko de AND Yoake ni Furu back to back and my god THE EMOTIONS ;o; I am not strong enough for this

I really have so much love for these series especially Yoake ni Furu which has cemented its spot as my Number 1 Favourite out of Hayakawa’s works and I think? that I’m in the minority with that opinion, but I just adore how multi-layered and subtle the storytelling is. I think that it’s definitely one that grows richer the more you reread it, because you don’t really get a clear picture of Shouta’s mental and emotional conflicts until the very end and not even then. In the beginning we’re made to believe that Shouta’s love for Hoshino is romantic in nature, at least partially, but gradually the inconsistencies appear and enough pieces come together for us to realize: Oh, it’s not romantic at all, but purely familial and protective; Hoshino is the third parent whom Shouta dearly loves but is uncomfortable “claiming” in that way, because that’s not normal and Shouta has always been aware how not normal his family situation is.

Add to that his pain over his mother dying and leaving him when he was so young, and his fear that he’s a burden to Akihiro (and also Akihiro and Hoshino still not getting their shit together even after 6 years) and well... that’s how you get a boy who can only express his love for his third parental figure by pretending he’s his long-distance girlfriend. It’s honestly so sad, and that’s also why he breaks down after seeing Hoshino cry and overhearing him say that he has a marriage interview, because he’s faced with the prospect of Hoshino leaving him as well and the confirmation that him growing up does not guarantee Hoshino’s presence in his life.

Another cute/heartbreaking sign of how Hoshino is really his second dad, is when Shouta invites Daiki over to his house for the weekend to see Hoshino, right after he stayed the night at Daiki’s house hanging out with Daiki’s mother and sister. It’s so clear that he loves Daiki’s family and really appreciates them caring for him and also appreciates Daiki for sharing them with him, which is why he wants to return the gesture by sharing his family aka Hoshino with Daiki (and he’s so disappointed when Daiki says he can’t come). What makes it extra special is that Daiki is one of the only people Shouta can share Hoshino with, and I think that’s also why Shouta is so upset after Daiki pushes him down and implies that Shouta’s feelings for Hoshino are sexual, because he trusted Daiki out of all people to understand him (but who can blame Daiki for not when Shouta never explained the whole situation to him, poor guy was under the misconception that Shouta has been dating his elementary school teacher this whole time).

The whole manga is really Shouta’s coming-of-age story as he struggles with accepting his unique family, not because he’s ashamed of them but because his fear of abandonment and his reluctance to depend on others even when he clearly wants to results in him feeling like he has no right to them (and that includes Daiki!!) Meanwhile, Daiki is just trying to figure Shouta’s shit out, and making some missteps along the way, but once he does, he tackles it head on, telling Shouta he loves him and that he wants Shouta to depend on him. And that reassurance, more than anything, is what allows Shouta to finally relax and be vulnerable with him.

I also really recommend reading this along with Yozora no Sumikko de, because there are some very cool parallels, contrasts, and callbacks between the two series. In Yozora, Hoshino thinks of Akihiro as a dazzling person, a star, far from his reach, until he gathers the courage to grasp him with his own hands, while in Yoake, Shouta thinks of Hoshino and his mother as stars, their familial love an ideal and something he must chase and prove himself worthy of, but Daiki? Daiki is much closer than that; he is the streetlamps, the houselights that make homes seem so warm and inviting at night, so much closer and yet easier to overlook because of their proximity. Honestly, it’s poetry.

There are many sports competitions, with the first one dating back to the Olympics, designed as a religious event, to honor their God.

Nowadays, it is still held for numerous other reasons, though in this case, made to alleviate the tension between two strongholds.

Sports and Art.

Gakema and Hoshino.

Adélie, as one of the staff, her beloved professor reminds so cheerfully, has a right to come and participate in the competition.

Competitiveness might get the best of her, and she would rather not have those students see her unleash that side.

Although, the lively event might be fun to attend, she thought she could ask a certain person to have a look around.

Objectively speaking, it is unfair for those two to be compared, with their own advantages and strengths in their respective field.

Yet, here they are, with continuously rising issues regarding both sides, refusing to back down.

Who comes up with this friendly competition idea?

Moreover, how is that supposed to ease the growing rivalry?

Adélie has never been related to either side, especially since she has always gotten one too many thoughts gnawing in her mind.

There are too many things going on in her life, she would rather not add another complication to it.

Some of her peers at the time tried to recruit her and get her active support, though she managed to dodge them.

Narrowly.

Others have been respectful enough about her perspective, especially since she spends most of her time dancing.

Dedicated has been one of the nicer words used to describe her. Not that she ever listens to it a lot.

There are more things to worry about for now, and she would rather spend any waking moment with Evelyn, and dance her heart out.

According to what they were taught, there should be no rivalry beyond the games and what happens in the competition.

That is also the same message they hope to convey on this chance. Friendliness and prove there are no hard feelings between institutes.

At least, that is what they make it to be. Adélie chooses to be a part of the audience, subtly cheering on students she knows.

“𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘪, why don’t you come and join us? There is a dance competition!”

Plenty of invitation comes, from the students and some lecturers, though she prefers to be their cheerleader.

Adélie did help a bit with choreography, pointing them to which routine might help gain some bonus points.

“I would say, emphasis on the transition steps. It shows a flow, makes it seem more seamless and effortless.”

Energy of a dance rely a lot on that forgotten step, the most important one when a dancer moves from one to the next move.

So simple, it might get overlooked and over time, forgotten. Adélie, who have always been told to be a little traditional at times, loves to bring a piece of modernity into any old-timers move.

“Tricks might be cool to the audience, but the effectiveness of your transition steps would earn those points.”

In short, it makes the dance complete, a whole story instead of bits and bobs.

Adélie decides to save that thought for her next class.

“You know, Adélie-san, it would be easier for you to just join them instead of teaching them. They’re running out of time!”

While she loves her old professor dearly, at times, Adélie sure feels a bit differently. This is one of those times.

Cheering and pleading her, to which she firmly shakes her head with an amusedly wry laugh, then tells them to start training.

“I’m still not competing!“

What’s your favorite manga page/panel?

Kanda from chapter 170 aside, another panel that I dearly love is this one of Nea/Allen and Mana/The Earl hugging in chapter 219. But since I find that something is missing when I post it alone, I decided to post it with the page from before where we see Nea’s reaction right before he hugs Mana back. For me, these two pages go together. (Nea closing his eyes tightly and clinging to Mana as he hugs him back tells us so much about them. Nea loves Mana. We can clearly see that this whole “I have to kill Mana” thing is killing him too in a way.)

What’s your favorite chapter?

Let’s stay with chapter 219. It’s the first time Nea and Mana truly reunite (even though Mana is pretty confused by the whole thing). The goddamn hug is enough to propel this chapter into my top 5 favorite chapters (do I even have a top 5? lol). It’s just... We finally get to learn more about them (tho we did guess already about some of the things Nea says), about how they came to be, about who The Earl is. During this whole conversation where Nea is telling Mana about who they are and what happened, Nea keeps staying close to Mana and touching him. Maybe it’s meant to be intimidating (and we can see that Mana is confused and scared by it all). But Nea isn’t gripping his arms or shoulders to keep him in place, he’s holding his face. Not gripping it, there’s no force behind it. He’s holding his face. I’ll even go as far as saying that he’s cradling his face and I just *clutches heart*. This chapter really made me love Mana and Nea.

Do you have a favorite volume?

Sadly I already talked about volume 19 and volume 20 so I’ll have to go with my second favorite volume which is volume 25. (Yes, chapter 219 is in this volume). This volume is all about Mana and Nea (and Link and a bit of Allen too!). About their story, about what happened when Mana became The Earl (we’re still left with many mysteries tho) and it’s fascinating. This volume also contain a chapter that I really like which is chapter 222 with Allen stucks in that wheat field and having a conversation with “Cross”)

Also, I don’t know how this volume is called in other countries. But here in France it’s called “Il a oublié l’amour” (”He forgot love”) and this alone is enough to make me feel things.

Do you like Mana or Nea more?

Both. I already talked about Nea so I’ll talk about Mana. Like with Nea, he’s surrounded in mysteries that we have yet to know more about. Was it really him who became Allen’s father back then? Was he the one dying and being brought back as an Akuma? (I do believe it was him, in a way. I do believe The Earl killed and gladly made “Mana” an akuma in order to get rid of this part of himself that was bothering him. But alas, it didn’t really work) Why is he the one who became The Earl and not Nea? He’s fascinating and I can’t wait to know more about him.

What’s one thing that you like and dislike about Hallow?

I already talked about how I feel about Hallow in my other reply so I won’t repeat myself here.

Like: They didn’t have to go that hard with Alma and yet they fucking did and I’m so grateful for it. He’s gorgeous. The whole purple thing going on during his fight with Kanda is gorgeous. The colors they choose for him are gorgeous. I know technically Hoshino is the one who choose that whole purple thing for him, but they could have easily fucked it up and yet they didn’t. Alma was perfect and I thank them for it. They also didn’t have to go that hard making Tyki. Clearly the whole budget went into making Alma and Tyki as handsome and fuckable as possible and I thank them for it.

Dislike: I understand the vibrant colors. Actually it doesn’t bother me that much. As much as I loved how dark the first anime is, I like the vibrant colors they used for Hallow. (Tho the blood seems fake, which completely destroy the gore/gruesome aspect of DGM. But I believe they did it on purpose so they could target a larger audience. So again, it doesn’t bother me that much.) But why the fuck is everyone so white????? Marie is supposed to be black and yet it doesn’t show??? At all??? They made him slightly darker than everyone else. And they didn’t even do it correctly because he just have this weird grey-ish skin that makes him looks like he’s sick lmao. But I mean, they’re all so goddamn white??? Wtf??? Did they forgot to apply some goddamn beige on their skin or something??? At least they made the Noah with some goddamn dark skin. (I saw some people complain about it. Their skin in Hallow looks too natural compared to the grey skin they had in the old anime which made them stand out more as those weird demi-god thing they’re supposed to represent. I understand their point of view. But personally it doesn’t bother me.)

What’s your favorite piece of DGM merch?

I already said the plusies. So I’ll go with the mugs. I only own one. But I love it. I love mugs in general so for me you can never go wrong with mug merches. I also love the art books and the logs. But I don’t really know if they count as merches or not.

Follow up question: what’s a piece of merch that you wish existed?

I suppose saying more figurines would make sense. I know figurines are a huge thing and we clearly don’t have that many. But personally I’m not a huge fan of figurines. Never really saw the appeal. It can be pretty when it’s well done but aside from that I’m just ???? But I do love prints. I have a lot for different fandoms. Official or not. So more official prints would be nice. I would love to have pins as well. (Yes, I have a lot of pins too and want some DGM one)
