jesus christ i just REALLY needed to post this cause i cant get the idea out if my head PLS this movie has me in a chokehold uhh so a little fic drabble based off of this song -

valentines day.. a day youve always hated... you look out over the trees and houses to see the sunset. everyone is talking and laughing, jeez its making your head hurt- you look around to see if you can find him... youd think it would be easy to spot a tall emo boy in a croud of country folk but alas you cant seem to find him. becoming disappointed your grab your acoustic and start to head back to your farm from town.. as you walk up the hills and past the falling leaves as you spot him, whats he doing up here?? you see him leaning on one of your fences, watching your rabbits run around with eachother.

"uh Sebastian? what are you doing up here??"

he jumps slightly at the sound of your voice, turning around to look at you with flushed cheeks... his obsidian eyes meet yours for a split second before he looks away

I like this one, I love how the sound of the exhausting lover bridge transcends the entire album. I love the lyric “did we really think we’d go back to normal” . It's like this album is a post covid more deep way to normal. It's a great song that questions our morals and their changes over the past years. I LOOVE the brass. I'm so happy he's using it more in this album.

Clouds with ellipses:

Idk man this one just reminds me of a church hymn but they all sound the same, it's kinda like this album's version of gone from rockin the suburbs. The emphasis on his voice in this one is really nice. He has a very good voice but I'm neutral about this one, I'm sure it'll grow on me cuz right now I think it's kinda silly. Oh wait it kinda reminds me of Gracie but not as good  lol!

Exhausting lover:

Probably my least favorite single but damn it's still so good. I like the keyboard and the big band sound that comes in, the bridge OH MY GOD THE BRIDGE is so fucking good. Anyway the weird lyrics and story is fun but i already had my autism moment  over it. Also the music video is a 10/10 so it has that going for it.

Fragile:

Sounds like me learning scales on the piano at 5 years old. I REALLY like this one its so good lyrically

Also the best song on the album. It makes me so happy honestly, it's just a really sweet song with a nice story and I like the time signature because it's the one I can never play. I have a few ben songs that just put me in a good mood and are a blessing to my ears regardless of what they are about (fair, kate, break up at a food court, fired, phone in a pool, hiro's song, bruised, etc) and this is def one of them

THOUGHTS AFTER 1st LISTEN:

This is definitely one of the ben albums that grows on you and then you can fully appreciate it, like silverman or reinhold. I think it's good! There are some great songs and I love the inclusion of more brass and string instruments, a nice change from his usual piano bass and drums. 

He said this was an album that he couldn't have made at any other time in his career and i agree, it's a nice mix of elements from silverman, so there, and a newish sound that i can't really describe. I feel bad because I'm like 3 months deep in the hardcore ben folds obsession (thanks neurodivergent brain) and i'm not like, losing my shit over every song on the album unlike his other albums like bf5 self titled, whatever and ever amen, and rockin the suburbs. But i know i'll grow to appreciate it and this is a pretty good closure to ben's career as a pop song writer, who knows maybe he will write the next hamilton and take the world by storm after this.

a pretty solid listing all around. no repeats, goes from artists with only 1k listeners a month to those with 5mil, from poptimism to rock, lot of lyricism and indie pop lol. i like to discover smaller artists a lot but will also get into a vibe trend where only one song will cut it or i have to devour one musician's album (see: yungblud) so i have to listen to that. i also did listen to like three soundtracks sooo heavily this past year. arcane takes the cake though, it was phenomenal in every way. if you haven't watched this breakdown of creating 'what could have been' by arcane musical composer alex seaver, you should!

supercut by lorde i don't listen to a whole lot of lorde but supercut has a perfect late night driving echoing in the blue headlights atmosphere, with the echo of the vocals and the staccato in the bridges, it's very satisfying

so very funny (to me) thing with this song is that my friend (emery) found it on spotify during quarantine, the full school year for which my entire high school spent 24/7 on 2-8 discord servers and were visibly listening to music on spotify every second of every day....so he's been looping this song for a couple days now and im like What the hell are you doing man are you okay and he goes This song is so addicting... and knowing me it probably took like a week of that to get me to actually give it a listen but.........hooooly shit he wasn't lying that song is addicting as all fuck so for the rest of the year he and i would have insanely long sessions of looping the song together and sometimes it would be funny bc i would be looping it and then check his spotify and coincidentally he was also looping it and it was a pointing spider man situation
