is it too much of a reach to say that zelda being reduced to basically an object to farm items from in totk just kinda adds more salt to the wound of how badly shes treated?

Mighty final fight nes cheat
Tumblr media
I challenge you to name even one arcade game contemporary to Ninja Gaiden that did this. That last bit is definitely "artificial difficulty" but again- NOT something anyone picked up from Arcade, because arcade games didn't do that sort of game lengthening. Ninja Gaiden doesn't get "unfair" until Act 3 with those damned birds (which the player will eventually learn patterns for) or the finale which will send the player all the way back to 6-1 if you lose at Jacquio on 6-5. Most people could clear the first level or two almost immediately, they aren't that difficult. You appear to be significantly worse at Ninja Gaiden than most people. Another excellent example of this was Goonies II NES- it is a vastly different version than it's Arcade/Famicom/MSX predecessor and there IS no arcade game that plays anything like it. That game relied on incremental progress and discovery to extend playtime. The "structure" of the game is completely different and does not come from the arcade- it was designed specifically around the home platform it existed on. The only thing it shares with the arcade counterpart is the name. There were no arcade counterparts to games like Bionic Commando NES. That's just the kind of game mechanic the developers chose to make.Īnd this of course is where your analogy falls apart. Hell, Elden Ring has "annoying platforming" in it for reasons no one quite understands. "annoying platforming" does not an arcade style game make. That genre along with RPGs do have other roots-DnD, Apple IIs, early PCs, and later consoles. The closest arcade analog I could think of is the Monster World games. Metroidvanias are interesting since they do originate on consoles. That design lives on today in games like Super Meat Boy, Cuphead, and so on. And in the NES example, unfortunately, many times super limited a la NG3.Īlso, I'm not anti arcade. Similar to how 1CCing an arcade game does.Īrcade games had actual money as a resource. I never knew anyone that beat Punch Out! or Ninja Gaiden in their first run. What does that remind you? Staring a new arcade run. I think I played Ninja Gaiden's first level over 500 times as a kid. So games required multiple playthroughs to beat. So while NES games were not always 1:1 to arcade games, the mastery and loop based structure comes from arcade games. In the NES era, you couldn't use "coins", you had to use time. I'm talking about "artificial difficulty". The Ghouls and Ghost games are platformers and find their origins in the arcade. Even Double Dragon Arcade had annoying platforming in the forest stage. The Famicom version was often either straight up easier, had lower experience caps, stage selects, or infinite continues that were intentionally removed from the US version because Japan had no rental market and didn't have to worry about it.Ĭlick to shrink. When I mean arcade style design, I'm not talking about quarter munching. This also explains weird difficulty increases and removed options in a number of JP to US conversions like Castlevania III, Bayou Billy, Contra, Turtles Arcade, Blaster Master, Double Dragon 2 and 3, Zelda II and Ninja Gaiden 3. (Notably, the 2600, Colecovision, INTV and similar did NOT have this third party arrangement leading to a glut of poor titles). This doesn't work well on a home console like the NES where nintendo's business model relied on a 30% cut or whatever of home console games. NES Games got away from classic 70s/80s "arcade design" pretty quickly (whereas those games were the overwhelming majority of the 2600 and INTV library) and in many cases the "arcade" version of the NES game was absolutely nothing like the arcade version.īionic Commando NES, Rygar NES, Strider, Double Dragon 1, 2, and 3 NES, Ninja Gaiden NES, and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out were all MUCH different (not just harder) games than their arcade counterparts, and Haunted Castle arcade is so much worse in design than Castlevania NES Konami rarely if ever bothers to acknowledge the thing exists.īottom line- if you're not worried about quarters (or are simply skilled) most arcade games aren't really that difficult and can be finished in less than an hour.

BTS reacting to you dressing up as their favorite video game character.
Tumblr media
pairing: bts x reader fandom: bts warnings: language ; sex genre: crack ; smut
a/n: I didn’t do just overwatch, I felt like that would be a little boring, but I hope you still like it!!!

Tumblr media
kim seokjin
Tumblr media
Jin and you had been so bored that you had decided to challenge yourselves to dress up as certain characters and the other person had to guess who it was, which turned out to be quite.. problematic, since you only had a limited amount of clothes that had to fit a certain character.
“Come on, Jagi, time is up,” Jin stared at the closet and impatiently waited for you to finally come out and when you did.. well..- “Wow.”
It was a long pink dress that you had worn for a charity event before and a flannel in a dark pink wrapped around your middle. You wore white gloves and red shoes, a necklace with a turquoise stone hanging around your neck and your hair brushed behind your ears.
“I'll give you a hint, it's..-”
“Princess Peach,” he said right away, “You won. No way I can top this. You literally look perfect.”
“YAY!” you happily laughed and jumped into his arms.
min yoongi
Tumblr media
“I hope you know how much I hate this,” Yoongi looked at himself in the mirror, then let out a heavy sigh and fell back into bed, “I don't want to go, (Y/N).”
One of his friends had invited you two to a Halloween party and he had been in a good mood when he had said he'd come. But now was the day of the party and he hated himself for having said yes. Just like he always did.
“Oh come on, it's not that bad.”
“It's not that bad?! There are so many more things we could be..-” but the second he turned around he stopped talking.
You were dressed like a Sheriff, but not just any Sheriff, you were dressed like Ashe. With the heels, the coat, the hat.. you even matched her make-up.
And he loved to play Ashe in Overwatch these days.
It seems like you had noticed.
“Yeah, like what?” you asked, adjusting the hat while looking at yourself in the mirror.
However, there was no way Yoongi would spend this night at a stupid Halloween party with his girlfriend looking like that, without at least having had sex with her once prior.
That was the only way he could make it through the night.
And boy did he look smug at that party.
jung hoseok
Tumblr media
“Had you told me that it would take this long for you to get ready, I would have stayed in my sweatpants for a little while longer.”
Hoseok continued to play Super Smash Bros on his switch, already being in his suit and ready to go, but you were taking forever.
For a good reason too, he realized when you finally joined him in the bedroom.
It wasn't completely obvious who your inspiration for this outfit/dress was, but for someone who knew the character, it kind of was.
“Zelda?” Hoseok beamed and got up, turning you around once, “Holy shit, that looks amazing.”
“You like it?”
“I love it, Jagi! But how did you think of it?”
“You've been playing that game non-stop and.. well..- she's pretty and you always choose her.”
“Well, actually, I choose you,” he pulled you close into his arms and dipped his head down to kiss you deeply, before whispering, “Pikachu.”
“Wrong costume, Hoseok.”
kim namjoon
Tumblr media
“No. Fucking. Way,” Namjoon laughed wholeheartedly when you walked into his room in a corset that was literally the same exact corset as Ahri's was from League of Legends. Only that you wore stockings and no leggings.
“This took me forever to order, so I really hope you like it.”
“Like it? Babe, you are the hottest woman I've ever met in my life,” he walked around you to look at the full glory of the corset, “It's so cool! Can't believe I'm going to have sex with my favorite character!”
“Just so you know,” you pushed him back so that he fell on the bed and straddled him, “I expect you to pay back the favor and dress up as my favorite character next.”
“But.. you have so many, that's unfair!”
“Well then,” you leaned down, Namjoon gulping down hard when he saw your breasts, “Be ready to spend a lot of money on costumes.”
park jimin
Tumblr media
You had actually been the one who had introduced him to Dragon Age and while he was rarely playing it himself, he absolutely loved watching you play it and during one of your playthroughs, he just completely fell in love with Merrill and her sweet personality.
And so when you and your friends decided to go out partying and the theme was a costume party, you had decided to dress up as her and.. well..
“I had no idea I could be so attracted to a video game character,” Jimin said with wide eyes.
“You think? I don't know, I kind of feel like it makes me a little fat here and..- OH!” but he had already pulled you on the bed with him and was shoving his tongue inside your mouth so that probably meant you looked absolutely fucking stunning.
kim taehyung
Tumblr media
You bought yourself a D.Va onesie on Amazon a few weeks ago, mainly because you knew how much Taehyung loved her and you had wanted a onesie for a while, but couldn't decide on what it should look like.
However what you thought would be an unattractive piece of clothing that you only wanted because it was cozy as fuck, gave your boyfriend an instant boner.
You looked at him with narrowed eyes, your hair messy and your hands shoved deeply in the pockets of the onesie, no make-up, whatsoever on your face.
“Seriously?”
“You know how much I love it when you don't wear make-up and that onesie.. I can't help it, (Y/N).”
“Fine. But you'll have to do all the work,” you climbed into bed, “I'm too lazy.”
“That won't be too hard, believe me.”
jeon jeongguk
Tumblr media
You didn't even want this for roleplay purposes, you had only wanted to wear this because you knew Jeongguk's eyes would fall out of his head if you wore it.
And you were so fucking right.
He had been drinking when he turned around, but immediately spit the water out when he saw what you were wearing.
“It's..- Widow..- my..-” he stammered and didn't know where to look first.
“I thought I'd surprise you. As an early birthday present, of a sort.”
“I don't think you can top this, though,” he muttered when you straddled him in his chair, his hands immediately on your ass.
“I'm (Y/N) (Y/L/N). I can top anything.”
“Oh my god,” he moaned immediately, to which you just grinned, before kissing him passionately.

..:PAST•PRESENT•FUTURE..: • PAST In my early days of cosplay I did a a few DC super hero costumes, simple Zelda side characters, and Sailor Venus stuff. This was before I competed or really knew how to sew well. It was a time of tons of trial and error, and self teaching. • PRESENT My latest projects have been a mix of super challenging, like Sera Myu Sailor Moon and my Couture De Force Alice, and more fun, easy projects like @tasia.m.s Witch Venus and @darkcrystalofficial Seladon (who I will be shooting next weekend!). • FUTURE My 2020 projects will be some of the most challenging of my life and I can’t wait to start soon! *Sera Myu Eternal Sailor Moon *Original design Spyro the Dragon inspired my Colleen Atwood and Dior *Queen Amidala Red Throne Room Gown (FINALLY) I’ve been gathering materials and planning for these costumes for literal YEARS at this point, no lie. April 3rd-April 9th, 2019 Reader Favorites Archive
The archive for the Reader Favorites chat that occurred from April 3rd, 2019 to April 9th, 2019.  The chat focused on the following question:
What webcomic inspired you to get into webcomics?  Please tell us about your journey.
lonelytuatara
there were several for me but I think Sakana was one of the biggest inspirations for me! http://www.sakana-comic.com/ since Mad talks a lot about her process with the comic it really helped make it feel less like some kinda magic that I didn’t know how to do and more like something I could try myself
RebelVampire
honestly i find this to be a difficult question. im old enough to remember when internet wasnt a thing. so when it became a thing, there were basically always webcomics. and it was just kind of like...a normal thing to be read on the internet just as much as anything else. i never saw it as a lesser medium as some ppl have experienced. it was just always there along with the internet so it always felt natural to me to read them if they seemed interesting. that being said, if i had to pick the first webcomic that ever made me stick around for a long time, it was Bleedman's Powerpuff Girls D fancomic. Besides the fact it was super popular at the time, i just thought it was really different. like the art popped a lot more than other comics at the time (that i knew of at least), the story was way less comedy more actually serious material, and just in general i enjoyed the story telling. https://www.snafu-comics.com/swmseries/powerpuffgirls/
Iris
homestuck was the biggest one for me, but others like Witchy, Lady of the Shard, and Tuppence for Stardust are also big inspirations
€heshire777
I kind of networked out from online newspaper comics into actual webcomics and beyond, it's kind of hard to tell but I think Skin Horse (http://skin-horse.com/) was pretty much the first webcomic I got into.(edited)
RebelVampire
cause a true hyperlink comes with the http part. http://skin-horse.com/
also please wrap the hyperlink in < and > so the embed is prevented. it keeps the chat cleaner @€heshire777(edited)
yes sorry XD
im multi tasking and didnt notice the wrong tag
€heshire777
S'fine
I know that guy from a different server too
RebelVampire
@Iris please make sure to link the comics next time https://www.homestuck.com/ http://witchycomic.com/ https://gigidigi.itch.io/lady https://tapas.io/series/tuppenceforstardust
Iris
oh crud, sorry. I'm tired and absent-minded this morning
Respheal
I'm a keenspace child apparently, 'cuz my first introductions to webcomics were Saturnalia (https://web.archive.org/web/20070705042710/http://www.spacecoyote.com/comics/sat/) and RPG World (http://rpgworld.keenspace.com/). Both are dead now, although RPG World has a sorta-creator-blessed fan revival (http://rpgworld.the-comic.org/) And then I sorta fell away from them for a bit, mostly, until a friend threw Mokepon (http://mokepon.smackjeeves.com/) and The Property of Hate (http://tpoh.smackjeeves.com/) at me and now I'm back xD
kayotics
I started reading webcomics back in the early 2000’s so I was consuming everything that was available, but I think the first one that actually made me think “I want my art to be like that” was The Meek https://www.meekcomic.com/ Up until that point I read mostly video game comics and they were funny but not inspiring me to make a comic. The Meek was gorgeous and interesting in a way that I hadn’t seen before.

A friend of mine made a webcomic in the early 2000s and I will not link it because it baaad, but that was my introduction to webcomics-- though when I started reading Terinu ( http://www.terinu.com/ ) and Lackadaisy Cats ( https://www.lackadaisycats.com/ ) was when I started wanting to make one of my own
The Meek and Gunnerkrigg Court were also early influences for me
oh, and hero! I loved this comic back in the day http://invisiblecities.comicgenesis.com/story.html
there were a handful of others that are no longer around, like Vampirates and Goodbye Chains and Astray3, all of which have vanished forever
Delphina
Acid Reflux (http://acidreflux.ficwad.com/) was the first webcomic I really got into back in 2000. The humor was a great blend of anime and light fantasy, which is definitely my happy place. The forum/IRC communities were big for the time too (and of course there was no social media back then outside of what people hosted themselves). When I started my own comic, one of my goals was to have a community like that.
varethane
yeah I totally used to hang out on the terinu forums and shared fanart and stuff XD
(and on my friends' forum which shall not be named)
Delphina
Yeah, standards were different back then XDDD
varethane
ohhhh yeahhh.
Nutty (Court of Roses)
The first webcomic I got into was Looking for Group https://www.lfg.co/. I'm a huge sucker for medieval settings, so my influences revolve around core fantasy, like Legend of Zelda and Lord of the Rings, but I also LOVE for my fantasy to not be taken as seriously with a good sense of humor, like LFG, Discworld, Dungeons and Dragons, and even The Adventure Zone. Seeing them create a graphic novel was sort of a catalyst for me deciding to make my own. I hope I do well for myself to contribute to the unique fantasy/comedy genre!(edited)
Brodnork
I actually started making webcomics before I knew they were a thing
When I was super young I made comic strips inspired by Calvin and Hobbes all the time
And when I got a deviantart account I started posting them
I think Calvin and Hobbes was a huge inspiration for my early work
Although I really started taking comics seriously when I started reading Cucumber Quest
https://cucumber.gigidigi.com/(edited)
Cucumber Quest
gigi
Calvin and Hobbes really inspired me to make comedy comics, and I loved the variety of backgrounds that were drawn in it
Cucumber Quest has lovely colours and a well written story, so I looked at pages from it a lot when I started teaching myself how to make colour palettes
magusferox
Anybody here read Kill Six Billion Demons? Epic stuff imo https://killsixbilliondemons.com/
€heshire777
Now I am
mika
i should make a tumblr page with all my favs
rae
for my old comic I put a bunch of my favs in the links section because I wanted more people to read them. XD
varethane
That's what I did too XD
though it's gotten a little bit out of date and I haven;t made a new one yet for my new comic

The first webcomic I ever read was Michelle Phan’s Helios Femina, Just cause I was a fan of her makeup tutorials. I started reading it but stopped and then when I started making my own webcomics last year I got into it again, but the story turned out to be not my thing, but freaking gorgeous art. Then I got into Planet Ace, Shiori, and webtoons like UnOrdinary and Spaceboy, and The Villain. Just sooooo good brings back some great summer memories. http://planet-ace.smackjeeves.com/ https://m.webtoons.com/en/fantasy/helios-femina/list?title_no=638&webtoon-platform-redirect=true https://m.webtoons.com/en/challenge/the-villain/list?title_no=188266&page=1&webtoon-platform-redirect=true https://www.smackjeeves.com/comicprofile.php?id=143025 https://m.webtoons.com/en/fantasy/unordinary/list?title_no=679&page=1&webtoon-platform-redirect=true https://m.webtoons.com/en/drama/space-boy/list?title_no=400&page=1&webtoon-platform-redirect=true(edited)

in which i accidentally 2000 words about goddamn phantasy star
i ended up pulling up the phantasy star page on wikipedia to win a discussion with my brother wrt video game prices, and ended up finding out that
1) you can unlock it on the ps3 sega’s ultimate genesis collection (super easily, too) and
2) apparently it’s actually considered an Important Game and shit, ranking at 26 on a “top 200 videogames of all time” list as recently as 2006 - and i’m talking specifically phantasy star 1 the master system game, not the series as a whole. like, being one of the first, if not the first, rpgs to not be a dungeons and dragons clone and/or take place in a generic fantasy setting; “event scenes” which are basically the precursor to cutscenes; actual characters with, like, names and backstories and motivation and shit; and, also, one of the first games with a female protagonist. metroid did it first, technically, having come out two years earlier, but while everyone knows samus is a girl now, back in 1986 you only found out if you beat the game fast enough and got to see her out of her suit (in a bikini, because 8-bit graphics); in phantasy star you knew right up front and center that you were playing as alis, younger sister of nero, whose tragic death the game literally opens with. also pseudo-3d dungeons, animated monster battles, and three fucking planets you could travel between.
(there’s a read-more after this; apparently i have a lot of feelings about phantasy star. rip anyone on mobile... including myself.)
don’t even get me started on phantasy star 2. you know what came out (in america) two months before final fantasy? this fucking shit. you know what pulled an aeris nine years before final fantasy 7 ever existed? this fucking shit. final fantasy was busy pulling a fifty shades on dungeons and dragons while phantasy star 2 was throwing characterisation and introspection and self-discovery and fantastic fucking worldbuilding and reversing the usual “humans vs aliens” plot (spoiler: we’re the invaders here) and just generally being amazing, well before final fantasy would start even thinking about it. did the sega genesis have a killer app? yes, and it wasn’t fucking sonic the hedgehog.
it’s not even fair to compare phantasy star 2 to final fantasy, what with them being from two different console generations and phantasy star 2 also being the largest game ever released at the time on any console (six megabits!), although for american audiences that’s the comparison they’d be making, since final fantasy came out so goddamn late here. ps1 vs ff1 is a fairer comparison, except that it isn’t, because everything i just said about ps2 vs ff1 still applies. (also - in japan, at least - ps1 came out literally two days after ff1.)
the worst goddamn thing i can say about this series is that it is, afaik, super obscure now. if you look up phantasy star stuff now, most of what you’ll find is probably going to be phantasy star online-related (let me get to that in a bit). much like everything else about sega, phantasy star was too goddamn ahead of its time and ambitious. EXAMPLE: fucking phantasy star 3, widely regarded as the worst game in the series - so much so that when sega was attempting an updated ps2 rerelease it was a phantasy star trilogy consisting of 1, 2, and 4 - had multiple generations, branching storylines, and four different endings. IN 1990. it was a gaiden (side story) game before the actual phantasy star: gaiden came out, let alone fire emblem: gaiden (although not, i don’t think, before the phantasy star 2 gaiden games, of which there were several; i could be wrong on that but it’s within the same series so it doesn’t really matter). i was going to call zelda 2 a gaiden game as well - fe2 apparently got compared to it a lot, both of them being the second game in a series and both of them taking a decidedly different approach to gameplay than the first had - but zelda 2 is actually literally a direct sequel, so it’s not gaiden in the slightest.
ANYWAY, ps3 appears at first entirely unrelated to anything in the previous two phantasy stars - dark force, the series Big Bad, gets referenced near the beginning but i don’t know if they actually call him by name until much later - and appears to be a fairly basic fantasy romp, except then you get a fucking robot party member (followed shortly thereafter by a second) and the “passages” to different “worlds” are inexplicably mechanical-looking, and then in the second generation you GO TO THE FUCKING MOON (which moon depends on which 2nd gen character you’re playing) and find out that actually, your home with its tiny “worlds” and weird fucking “passages”? IS A GODDAMN SPACESHIP.
you know what other game starts out super fantasy but, in the end, you go to the goddamn moon? final fantasy 4. a year later. my knowledge of super famicom games doesn’t extend that much farther than final fantasy and fire emblem with a side order of zelda, so i might be entirely off the mark on this one, but as far as i know the next game of that era to do a multiple generation thing was fe4, genealogy of the holy war, in 1996. six fucking years later.
unfortunately phantasy star 3 spent a bit too much effort being super innovative, because it literally is objectively the worst of the quadrilogy, but it is by no means a bad game? phantasy star 2 set a high fucking bar and phantasy star 4 picked up where ps2 left off (only not really, because it’s 1000 years later); 3, with its barely-there tie to phantasy star 2 (in an entirely optional town, at that) and weird-ass mechanics that only it has, gets forgotten pretty easily in the middle of that. you know. like a fucking gaiden game.
and speaking of phantasy star 4, it expands even more on the “event scenes” of previous games, as well as the script, and guess what? it did combination attacks two years before chrono trigger did. (or a few months, for us americans. still.) this is the phantasy star i have the least experience with, so i can’t comment as much on it, but i do know that it is a long fucking game, and not because it’s grindy as hell. because plot. STORY! (also apparently, in the us at least, it retailed for ~$100. yikes.)
also, i lied, because ps4 is not the phantasy star i have the least experience with; that would be everything that came after.* i, personally, love the quadrilogy to pieces and pretend that nothing else came after it, ever (which is really easy to do, because none of it is fucking related to the quadrilogy except for set dressing), but I CAN’T NOT MENTION PHANTASY STAR ONLINE, not if i’m talking about sega being tragically too ahead of its fucking time. it was literally the second online console game - i think the first mmo - and the first online console game - chu-chu rocket! - was made literally so that sega could figure out how the fuck to make pso work. chu-chu rocket! came out for the dreamcast in 1999; phantasy star online followed in 2000. ps2 online multiplayer wasn’t a thing until the year after that; followed another year later by the xbox. (final fantasy xi also came out in 2002.) attempts at online console capabilities were made as early as - i want to say as early as the snes and the genesis, with stuff like downloadable games, and a whole host of companies attempted to produce consoles with online capabilities, to compete with the pc market, but nothing actually took off until the dreamcast.
( * actually it’s gaiden and adventure, the two game gear titles. i have literally never touched anything related to them at all, ever, and i actually forgot they existed until i started looking shit up for this post. i do at least own a copy of phantasy star universe; i missed the bandwagon on pso, though as i understand it, if i were to emulate it, i could still play online with other people.)
hey, guess what phantasy star online was a direct inspiration for? the .hack series. SURPRISE, MOTHERFUCKERS.
unfortunately sega seems pretty content to forget that this franchise even exists; the most recent release was the japan-only phantasy star portable 2 infinity in 2011 (phantasy star portable 2, regular version, hit english-speaking audiences in 2010), but is part of the phantasy star universe line, a... spin-off, i guess? of phantasy star online, but for ps2 and 360, well after sega dropped out of the console race for good. the original quadrilogy? well, 2-4 get included on basically every genesis collection sega shits out for any console whatsoever, but ps1, having been for master system, usually gets left out - sonic’s ultimate genesis collection, mentioned way back at the top, is the outlier here, but even then you have to unlock it. (by... beating the first boss of sonic 2 with two active controllers - that is, with a second player joined but not actually in two-player mode. so two controllers. it’s not hard to unlock; you can do it in like five minutes. you still have to do it, though.) there were attempts to remaster them - i mentioned the updated ps2 rereleases, and ps1 and ps2 were actually released in japan; ps4′s never happened, though¸ and so neither of the first two were ever localised, though there are translation patches. (as i understand it, ps2′s is still kind of a work in progress.) apparently these new versions ended up scrapped in favor of a ps2 port of phantasy star collection for the saturn, both of which were released in japan only. the saturn version (1998) had all four games (and a few unrelated ones); the ps2 version (2008), phantasy star complete collection was... uh, exactly what the name implies: all four main games, all of the ps2 gaiden games (text adventures, apparently, previously exclusive to the sega meganet network service and also japan-only), and both game gear entries (gaiden and adventure); it also added the ability to make the games even harder, if you wanted to, as well as several different graphical filters you could use or not use as you preferred. this compilation was apparently also released over psn for ps3 in 2012. have i said “japan-only” enough times yet? it was japan-only.
there was also a phantasy star collection for the gba, in 2001/2; this consisted of the first three games - but not the fourth, as it wouldn’t fit on the cartridge - and no extras or improvements other than what was required to make them run on the gba. this version is notable for being the only goddamn one released outside japan. i have two cartridge copies and it is consistently the first game i play on any given gba emulator.
...and that’s how i ended up spending two goddamn hours writing way the fuck more about the phantasy star series, and specifically the original quadrilogy that is older the fuck than i am, than i ever actually intended to. idk, maybe there’s a huge active cult following for these somewhere on the internet that i haven’t found yet - yes, i’m aware of most of the fansites, they’re old as fuck and afaik mostly inactive, so they don’t count - but it sure as hell feels to me like everybody’s sleeping on these. what do people remember from the genesis? sonic and fucking ecco the dolphin. sega could totally pull a square enix and ff7-remake the shit out of these (except for real), but they could barely do it for the playstation 2; they’re sure as hell not going to do it for the playstation 4. so instead, all i can do is dream of what we could have had. (and, uh. play phantasy star generations 1 with the translation patch, the closest there is to “what we could have had”.)
i guess when sega saddled ps4 with the subtitle “the end of the millennium” they fucking meant it.

How Much Does It Matter That PCs Are Faster Than Consoles?
Earlier this week, I argued that the backward-compatibility features Microsoft is launching with the Xbox Series X will put consoles on an equal footing with PCs for the first time ever. My point was not to claim that PC and console gaming would now literally be identical, but that adding accessory and software backward compatibility represented the last major feature gap between the two platforms and that the Xbox Series X represented a convergence between PC and consoles.
Plenty of readers disagreed. This article is the first of several I intend to write on various counter-arguments or views raised by readers. According to some vehement readers, the entire point of PC gaming is to maintain higher frame rates than anything a console is capable of. Speed (and to a lesser extent, higher detail levels) aren’t just a nice perk — they’re the defining characteristic that separates PC and console gaming. 60fps is one common target, but some of the people who responded claimed higher targets, including 144 and even 240fps. Many of the same people who emphasized this argument made other comments indicating they believed I was a console gamer.
For the record, I’m not. I’d estimate upwards of 95 percent of my total lifetime gaming has been done on a PC, and I’ve been a PC gamer since 1987. Obviously people are allowed to value anything they want about a platform, but I want to talk about the idea that PC gaming is explicitly about high frame rates. I think whether you associate PC gaming
Tumblr media
specifically with fast gaming depends, at least in part, on when you grew up.
PCs Used to Be the Slowest Gaming Solution Around
When I was young, PC games were slow. While there were 8-bit machines from Atari and Commodore that offered richer graphics and audio options, the generic hardware in the IBM PC and its immediate successors wasn’t well-suited to fast-paced gaming. Graphics on the PC began as a crude series of static images — the first graphical adventure game, Mystery House, was published in 1980 by On-Line Systems, the forerunner of Sierra On-Line. Lists of the best games of the 1980s are dominated by RPGs, simulations, and adventure games.
Games that primarily relied on typed input mostly didn’t rely on fast gameplay to avoid turning them into inadvertent typing speed tests. Early Sierra games like Kings Quest I – III, Space Quest I and II, Police Quest I, and the original Leisure Suit Larry didn’t even pause the game when you started to type.
I went to my friends’ houses to play games like Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros., and Double Dragon because they were faster and smoother than anything I had access to at home. Platforming on the PC in the late 1980s looked like Captain Comic, shown below. I beat this game. It wasn’t nearly as much fun as Super Mario Bros. and it didn’t play as well. This blog post dives into some of the technical reasons why a $2,000 PC in 1991 couldn’t match a $200 console — because, at the time, it couldn’t.
youtube
If you fell in love with PC gaming in this era, it wasn’t because PCs outperformed consoles. It took far longer to load data off a floppy disk or even hard drive than an NES cartridge, and the NES, Genesis, and Super Nintendo had better graphics than the PC at launch. You played Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar instead of Final Fantasy because Ultima IV actually let you talk to each and every NPC, asking them detailed questions about their lives, as opposed to limiting the NPCs to single-response answers. Ultima IV had standard RPG elements like levels and spellcasting, but part of the feeling of progression came from learning which NPCs knew what information and puzzling out various webs of information. Squint a little and it’s an organic quest system without the in-game tracking.
Consoles had nothing to match this kind of capability. In the era before dialog menus, keyboard support made game engines feel as if they supported far richer levels of text interactivity than they actually did. It’s an advantage the PC lost after games moved away from emphasizing text input and towards the use of dialog menus.
In the late 1980s, if you wanted to make a game run meaningfully faster, you copied it to your hard drive. A faster CPU would play animations faster, but games of the day loaded data one screen at a time. Above a certain point, running a game off multiple 5.25-inch floppies and swapping between them hit performance much harder than a slower CPU. You also ran the risk of discovering one of your floppies had gone bad mid-game. If you wanted fast, animated, on-screen gaming, you bought a console. If you wanted deep, thoughtful, slower-paced titles, you played on PC.
Games like Wolfenstein 3D and Doom made tremendous waves in the PC market precisely because they were some of the first PC games to offer fast-paced, arcade-like play. But Wolf 3D didn’t show up until 1992, with Doom following in 1993. At the time, I could play Wolfenstein 3D reasonably well on my 386SX-16 with 8MB of RAM, but I had to shrink Doom to postage-stamp size to play it, and the only version of Doom 2 I had access to required a CD-ROM, which my machine didn’t have. I played older games like Civilization on my home PC and titles like Civilization II and Doom 2 on my best friend’s computer, since his parents had bought a 486-DX2. CD-ROM capabilities were huge in the mid-90s and game developers quickly found ways to offer additional features on the CD-ROM versions of their games.
Performance Evolves Slowly
The arrival of 3D cards in the late 1990s revolutionized gaming, but they didn’t immediately unlock super-high frame rates for your average PC gamer. Higher spend has always equaled higher frame rates, but the speed at which the market moved and the higher number of variables to track made it harder and more expensive to get decent performance than it is today. In 1997, if you had money, you bought a Pentium or Pentium II. If you didn’t have money, you bought a K6 or K6-2.
The arrival of Athlon in 1999 kicked off the first high-end war between AMD and Intel, but I’d bought my first system in 1997. As a college student, I was firmly in the “don’t have money” crowd, and these are the kind of frame rates you got from Quake III Arena in 2000 if you had, say, a K6-2 300. All of these graphs are from nearly the same period of time — two articles from Anandtech, written in June and November of 2000. All images below by Anandtech.
Here’s the same test from a K6-3 450:
Finally, the same test at the same resolution, running on an array of higher-end CPUs:
Graph by Anandtech
Only one of those graphs — the last one — looks like the kind of CPU results we see in games today. The K6-3 was so much faster than the K6-2 thanks to the combined impact of an on-die L2 cache and its higher clock speed. What’s unusual is that the large performance gains aren’t confined to the highest-end GPU, but show up even when tested with older cards like the TNT2 Ultra. Even a low-end card like the Voodoo 3 2000 showed much stronger CPU scaling than what we see today. And all of these chips were new by modern standards  — the K6-2 300 was less than 2.5 years old in November 2000. The “old” Voodoo 3 2000 was barely 15 months old.
My initial forays into overclocking were driven by a desire to squeeze more performance out of budget hardware so I could game at something that didn’t look like potato quality running at terrible frame rates. That was scarcely uncommon. In the era when CPU and GPU performance were both leaping ahead, relatively few people could afford to stay on the absolute cutting edge of technology. While Quake 3 showed what looks like modern CPU performance clustering, this wasn’t universal. Compare it with Unreal Tournament, from the same review:
Games like Unreal Tournament still showed strong impacts from CPU and illustrated how quickly the market was moving. The Athlon 500 (KX133) that couldn’t even hit 45fps? It was a few days short of its first birthday. If you had wanted to stay on top of that mythical 60fps target, you might have found yourself replacing $500 – $1,000 worth of components every single year. I’m sure some people did. Most didn’t.
The Limits of FPS as a Metric:
There are three specific reasons I’ve spent so much time on the history above. First, I wanted to illustrate how the evolution of gaming itself has changed which system components need to be upgraded in order to improve performance, and how much the position of PCs versus consoles has changed.
Second, I wanted to emphasize that defining PC gaming strictly in terms of high frame rates is ahistorical relative to how many of us experienced that history. The fastest CPU you could buy the month after Quake came out (June 1996) was a Pentium 200 MMX. The minimum CPU requirement for Quake 3 Arena in 1999 was a Pentium II 233. There was no upgrade path between the two platforms. Most PC gamers didn’t spend thousands of dollars every single year to stay current on hardware. You bought when you could, overclocked where you could, and played what you could with the result.
Third, I wanted to discuss how attempting to define gaming superiority in terms of how frame rate punishes PC players who simply can’t afford to spend as much money as others. By extension, it implies that the only valuable games are games that can push PC hardware. There’s nothing wrong with having enough disposable income to choose a higher-performing platform or with loving games that push the envelope, but you aren’t less of a PC gamer just because you game on a low-end PC. One of the best aspects of the indie boom has been a proliferation of games that don’t require much in the way of hardware. A low-end 2019 laptop may not play much in the way of modern titles, but it’ll play the biggest hits of 1997 – 2007 just fine.
Like a lot of you, I enjoy playing PC games at higher frame rates than consoles typically offer. Like a lot of you, I consider this a major strength. I don’t, however, consider higher frame rates to be an intrinsic advantage of the platform. They’re only an advantage if you have access to them in the first place, and not all PC gamers do. There are a lot of flaws in the Steam Hardware Survey, but according to the best data we have, the GTX 1060, 1050 Ti, and 1050 are the top three GPUs on the market today, with 28.92 percent of the market between them. The people who buy those GPUs are still PC gamers, but they aren’t necessarily enjoying better frame rates than they’d see on an Xbox One X.
I’m happy to acknowledge superior performance as a current perk of building a high-end gaming PC, but you can love PC gaming passionately and be stuck doing it on old equipment. There’s no question that it’ll be possible to build a PC that outperforms the Xbox Series X,
Tumblr media
but I don’t consider faster frame rates to be a fundamental characteristic of PC gaming as a category — just a really nice benefit I’m happy to take advantage of when I have the money and the opportunity.

... or maybe I am just sad that I am poor
This was the last picture I took at the Zakhaev International Airport before boarding my flight home. The mountain backdrop is simply stunning. Goodbye Russia! It's been an incredible few weeks!
I love the Battle Network series.

today’s zeldablogging, big big huge very much spoilers everywhere:
WHERE DO I EVEN GO FIRST there is. so Much
out towards the ocean, i suppose...i see a shrine, and something else glowing that could be a settlement or lava or even a great fairy, and there are those islands to think about
GOD IT'S A COMBAT SHRINE a minor test of strenth okay okay i can do this
oh pffft that was easy
and i got...a giant ancient core, which sounds nice but probably won't let me upgrade my rune
how come the bokoblins can use bomb arrows in the rain and i can't?!
OH MY GOD....
first skeleton bokoblins, then skeleton lizalfos, and now skeleton moblins?!?!
wish i had marked that other glowing thing with a pin...i can't find it now lol
and i am at the islands!! man these bridges sure are tiny and high up
all this climbing i want to do and its about to rain :/
oh good. more flying guardians :|im trapped on top of this island in the middle of a lightning storm in the night besieged by moblin skeletons and keese swarms and my only non-metallic weapon is a korok leaf smh
mkay i am All Done with the islands im gonna warp back to the tower and mark the glowy thing this time
oh they just look like mushrooms?? well i'll go pick them i guess
OH OMG IT'S A FAIRY FOUNTAIN SKDFGH YES!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!
only 500...but i know it gets worse :| im saving up
oh this one is blue!! how pretty
haha i still think they look more like mermaids...can't see their legs and they pop up outta water :3
OMG I SEE THE FIRE DRAGON
THE DIN ONE
IN THE DISTANCE AAAAH!!!!
so far away ;u;
i can't even take a good picture!!!!
oh no
oh NO
skeleton moblins...and now a skeleton hinox ;___;
...skeletons only take two hits. im gonna go fight it
omg the hinox fight music plays nooooo rip m having eventide flashbacks
oh my god! wow! okay! this one takes more than two hits!!
it's lightning too i can't even use my bomb arrows what did i get myself into........
OMFG HE IS TEARING OFF HIS OWN RIBS TO THROW AT ME LSKDJFHG
oh the lightning is a hinox thing. Great i only have metal weapons rn
aaaand he ran away with the dawn. ok
oh dude this shrine is cool you have to like play putt putt golf hahaha
OMG IM GOING TO CRY
i found another memory and it's of zelda saying she's prayed all her life like her father wanted and she still can't make the gods hear her......im so sad for her
there's nothing wrong with you my sweet daughter!!!!
this is cool tho the talk of her father and mother and grandmother and link's father
they have families and lives, it's so neat, i wish i knew more about them
tho ofc almost everyone who knew and loved link is long dead now......
ah. i paraglided her, but
to get out i have to bypass all these flying guardians. Great
NO SKDFGJH ONE SAW ME
so its laser grazed me and only took one heart and i was like thats it?! i'll fight you!!
then i got hit directly and it nearly killed me so now im running
NOOOO THERE'S A LYNEL HERE JESUS GOD
I JUST WANTED TO GET TO THE SHRINE AND I RAN RIGHT INTO HIM SDLFGJH
god and a blue hinox in the way too Why
omg i unlocked a monster shop lskjghf now i will see him in villages at night!!!
ah the shrine is on top of this huge rock pillar, how do i...?
maybe i can glide from a nearby cliff!!
okay...okay...it's not sheer rock, there must be resting places, if i glide form here maybe i can do it
i can't glide from where i'd like bc of the hinox (:
I MADE IT
they better not make me solve a fucking puzzle too
ah good they didn;t
FLAMEBLADE thats so badass
oh god another blue lynel
maybe it's even the same one
my dude i just wanna travel....i promise, i promise
FINALLY the akkala research lab!!!
dude better have some sick duds or something for me i swear to god
the music in here is lit i love it
uh
there's a...blue glowing statue
looks like something out of the tower of the gods awww
haha it's damaged! poor thing
this old man like "show me the wounds on your body you suffered" bro are you asking me to strip
oh my gOD his electric guitar pose thing
jesus chrkjrgh
EVERYONE IN THIS GAME IS A GIANT HAM
im doing a quest where you have to carry fire
AND IT STARTS RAINING
this game has made me LOATHE rain! i thought that was impossible and yet!!!!!
im running out of map stamps :/ why would you give me a world this big and limit me to only 100...?
aaaand it's raining
and my ONLY TORCH BROKE god i keep accidentally using it to hit things!!!
FINALLY i did it!!!!! god that was so tedious
oh my god this guy could make me such amazing gear, but i don't have the materials </3
now to check out this maze building it looks super weird and i can see a shrine in it......
how the fuck are you even supposed to get there i hope my glider can take me
lovely. the wind's blowing against me and i see flying guardians from here
noooo they're EVERYWHERE and i have to do a MAZE oh my god
i can solve it on my map and mark the dead end routes, fortunately
i still kind of want to explore those routes lol
oh they're so bare......maybe not
if i miss something like a korok seed or whatever a guide will direct me back here later
or...maybe not
i mean im next to the shrine but it's surrouned on all sides by wall?
bet it's too tall to climb even with potions and my gear
ooh or if it isn't those lfying guardians will fuck me up in a snap
YES i got lucky and found my way in from the top
or no i found...a sword, great, how do i get into the SHRINE
YES here it is
dude i got an ATK+ helmet!! i got GEAR!!!! YES
AAAAH I GOT ATTACKED AS SOON AS I GOT OUT
nope fuck this im fast traveling. goodbye forever, maze island
geez i guess that must be nearly it for this province then i got one shrine left i think and then i could........go to death mountain?
tbh kinda tempted to go back down to lake hylia but i'll pass for now, i want more Plot
i suppose i didn't do akkala beach but it's small and remote so i'm ok with that for now - i can clean up the endgame stuff later when better guides are out
there's a stable next to this shrine!! yay!!!!!!
omg there's a goron here!!!!! hi!!!!!!!!!!!!
finally hit 10k rupees
ooh this guy is talking about a legendary sword...GIMME MY MASTER SWORD
tbh i'll be disappointed if there's no special quest to get it tho like you just...find it? kinda weak
AAAH I CAN CHANGE MANES HERE........jemma has a floral mane now ;w;
too bad i didn't find this before, i can't ride her up death mountain, unfortunately - it's so much faster to fast travel, and she might get hurt, and i'll have to get on and off of her so much... ):
oh wait, i haven't explored the lake yet! i forgot! i can take her there <3
all the guardians here scared the shit out of me but they arent functional, thank god
NO FUCK THERE ABSOLUTELY IS A LIVE GUARDIAN HERE.....fuck fuck i can't KILL them
omg no i see TWO of them
if it was just one i might try my luck, but...no way
i'm sure in the future i'll be able to get more guardian arrows but right now i have, like, 4? so i can't waste them
and when i have the guardian armor that'll help too but. not Now
aaah i found somsone whose ancestors died at that tower...apparently the last stand was made there at what used to be the fortress after the castle fell ;_; and he wanted to pray there but it's too dangerous and i am AD oh my god
i can see the death mountain tower and a shrine from the akkala tower, but i can only reach the shrine by gliding. the tower is surrounded by (UGH) snow
lol the shrine is by a stable too
AAAH kass is here!!!!!!
AWWW he said the song he's playing was used by the ancient hero to call his horse!! gonna cry omg
bro lmao there's an ostrich running around here what kinda shenanigans
oh my god this dried lava under the tower is SO COOL it's so BIG and i feel so SMALL
ah, eldin tower - so this is the eldin province
wow the first stops are quite a ways up on this one! lucky i have so much stamina
ooooh my gosh the eldin map is HUGE and FULL OF LAVA im not sure im Prepared for this!!!
lol in a fun twist the temperature gets HOTTER as i gain altitude. ohhh man
i guess...i wanna do plot. i'll try to make it to goron city, and come back and explore later
when i have more fireproof elixirs lol rn my inventory is packed so i could only buy 3
oh my god i can't use wooden weapons, my arrows turn into fire arrows as soon as i get them out, even the loot will catch fire if you leave it too long, this is Intense
OH MY GOD A STONE TALUS BUT IT'S LIKE, MAGMA-Y
okay this is cool i wish i hadn't waited so long
lmao i accidentally drank a defense elixir and erased my fireproofness early OOPS
omg you can't use bomb arrows either dkgjhdfg the heat makes them explode instantly
unfortunately the only thing that makes a dent is ice arrows and i just don't have enough rn....BUT I WILL RETURN god that is so cool okay anyway
all right......i really like this region. normally i'm a water person, ESPECIALLY in zelda games, but rain and lightning have been nothing but a pain in my ass since i started playing. maybe i was ready for some #Heat
HA there's the fucking blood moon good thing i DIDN'T kill him it would have been erased right after
the blood moon looks kinda cool when the air is already like this tbh but i still hate it
like on a gameplay/story integration level it's a cool way to explain monsters coming back
but also im angry on behalf of hylians and everyone else like
no matter how hard they fight every month it comes back, it's all in vain
the music here is super cool, also
omg i found a little camp of gorons!!
ooh, a hylian...and he'll give me fireproof armor for lizards OOOO:
hahahaha...they can't dig up ore because of a lizard monster
my heart twisted, fondly
geez i wish i had time to catch some lizards...........
i caught a few but not 10, and i only have one elixir left, since i used one early. i guess if it comes to it i could try to make another but
YES okay i did it!! good
and armor i now have!!
altho i hope i don't run out of armor inventory space that would SUCK what with all the work that goes into collecting and upgrading it tbh
LOL i hit an emu or ostrich or whatever it is and the meat it dropped immediately became roasted oh my god
HOLY FUCK THE MOUNTAIN IS ERUPTING
NOW THIS SHIT BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OH MY GOD
running for cover!!!! almost dying!!!!!!!!! good times im so happy
it's like getting to do it the very first time all over again
oh my god i just got a divine beast cutscene as i got to goron city i am quaking in my boots it is SO BIG
and now i'm out almost 3k rupees but i have full fireproof armor!
oh my god you can get a goron massage at the inn
"it doesn't hurt a bit" yeah i bet
[cue lots of screaming]
omg theres a gerudo lady sleeping here!! are you not on fire?!?!
SO IS PAINTER DUDE...?
omg they must have elixirs ldfjkgh
"abandoned mine - do not stray from path! both literally and figuratively" slkdfjgh what does that MEAN...
aw, they sleep on beds of hoat coals
man this shrine im doing is so complex!! like many multiple rooms, it's neat
i got like 9 orbs now i need to find somehwere to trade them in
omg so im lookin for the goron who went to get the stuff out of the vault and HE'S TALKING IT'S SO WEIRD it still always shocks me
how do i..? my bombs don;t work, so
OH OMG I CAN USE THE CANONS i thought maybe you had to wait for permission lol
poor goron he's scared and trembling...haha just like the ones in the fire temple. bye
HE TALKED IN HIS OPENING CUTSCENE...IM SO GLAD
yunobo! aww he's precious i love him
i suspect this is the area where i'll have to get inside the divine beast tbh bc of all the cannons
lol almost yped it with one n. shh
the embers here are so pretty...next time i paint hotland i'll remember them
i wanna paint THIS, tbh
like, anything. from this game. god Damn
ooooh a daruk statue
omg IM GETTING A MEMORY YES!!!!!!
I LOVE HIM
I LOVE DARUK
WHO PATS BACKS TOO HARD AND PUNCHES OUT ROCKS
oh my god he had the same kind of barrier that yunobo put up around himself are they related!!!! im gonna cry i love them so much
yep hahahaha the next words out of boss's mouth!
oooh he has the blessing, that's what the barrier is
yunobo's at eldin bridge...? that's MILES away
OH!!! omg my brother reminded me there are two in tp hahahaha so i guess i got them mixed up
so where is eldin's bridge actually......
too bad i cant swim up lavafalls lol
i found a minecart and put it on the track but bombs dont make it go and i can't magnesis it when its under my feet??
AHA, STASIS
okay that was super fun but i hate beating up my weapons like that
there's a shrine here but the glowing orange blends right in with this lava, i nearly missed it
AWWW yunobo's gonna be the canonball! bless him
omg is he gonna follow me!!!! I HAVE A FRIEND
IM GONNA CRY FINALLY IM NOT ALONE <3333
oh god okay here we go i guess??? im so scared
like. its so big.i cant impress upon anyone who hasnt played it. how big it is. and the mountain is so much bigger and i am so small. i keep saying that but i'm like. DWARFED by this thing, it's truly incredible
ohhhhh an escort mission.......and stealth, which im Bad at. man, the elephant was a lot cooler so far
AWW omg we snuck past the first one and he went "hee hee!" and it was so cute i love him so much
he stands at attention so quick when i do the stop whistle please please i love him
also i feel like i recognize SO many voices in this...i gotta imdb it later
the voice acting isn't even anything extraordinary, it's like, not awful but nothing jaw dropping
but the fact that they speak blows my mind every time
i used to fantasize about that in a "fff yeah right the day after never" kinda way and here we are.....
omg i got stuck and talked to him and it's like. what he said was completely useless but it's like having a companion!!! oh god i've been so lonely
oh god i looked up too far and saw the beast and it is. so big. i know i keep saying this but it is gargantuan. it's HUGE. i can't believe how big it is
lol i couldnt figure out why the trail ended and spent half an hour wondering what i was supposed to do
turns out i should have been firing at the divine beast this entire time so i gotta go back and start over and walk up the trail again LMAO
at least you only have to clear the sentries once
ah FINALLY im inside!
DARUK IS TALKING TO ME ;_;
HE ALWAYS KNEW LINK WOULD BE BACK im so sad. i feel human emotion
oooh it's all dark in here
and blue flame!!
ohhhhh man i love these 3D maps
OH MY GOD YOU CAN TURN IT
it's so big. oh my god
wait it isn't hot in here! i can use any item i want!
god i forgot how the music becomes creepier the closer you get
i can't believe this...turning the whole dungeon...some stone tower temple shit
ooh okay still hot OUTSIDE of the divine beast...too bad
noooo i found the cockpit pod thingy...like are their skeletons just decaying in there or
ooh boy oooookay last one here we GOOOO...
"PAIN IN THE CRAG" LOL NINTENDO PLS
omg daruk cheering me on as i fight ;______;
awww that wasnt too bad ive fought WAY worse enemies just roaming around on the map
oh ew GROSS
DARUK ;_;
me after daruk sent link away: aaaww i love him but that wasn't as gut-wrenching as mipha's
me after daruk saw yunobo from a distance and they waved at each other: literally actually crying, there are tears really on my face
WHY COULDN'T MIPHA SEE HER FAMILY FROM A DISTANCE, HUH
if it doesn't happen i swear to god i will draw it if i have to
oooh boss is talkin about the master sword
it's in a forest - that's gotta be the lost woods or i'll eat my pointy green hat
but i mean. if you just find it. there's gotta be some kinda quest or build up
wow, i'm finally at the tippy-top opf death mountain...i feel like i could go anywhere from here
omg i flew to a shrine and i have to complete a training thing to get in??? oh my god
oh no. i have to climb the thing. #why
aww that wasn't too bad. did it on the first try
i found the end of the map on "land" ... it's a deep gorge and you die if you go too far down, probably even if you're on foot
but there's land beyond that, even on the map, so it doesn't feel as freaky as just MEGA WIND on the ocean
why is there a hinox EVERYWHERE i try to go. why.
dude theres a giant skeleton of some sort on my map...omg
probs a hinox there too tbh
...wait a second.
i'm at a HOT SPRING
i recover hearts by swimming, so maybe i could fight this hinox...
AND i have daruk's protection, three whole charges, two fairies, my hearty radish food, and mipha's grace.........i can do it!!
wow okay and i just used up the grace and one fairy on this bokoblin camp so nevermind
tbh i don't even like fighting them...i suck at combat and the rewards are almost never worth the fight
okay but i literally could get anywhere from death mountain i think and i do mean LITERALLY that isn't hyperbole, assuming i had infinite stamina. damn. thats a Big Mountain
gonna go investigate the skeleton
there's monsters under it! i am standing above them on the ribcage and cheesing it with bombs
also it says eldin great skeleton was this a dragon.........
was this in the trailers or was it somewhere else?
standing inside the skull of this thing
i realize just how BIG the dragons are
like. damn
everything in this game makes me feel like an ant
lol this is the First Ever shrine i'll have to come back to not bc i can't figure it out but bc i ran out of fucking arrows. incredible
the problem is i can't really explore here bc my fire armor hasnt been improved at all, my defense SUCKS
i just died bc i found a talus lol and it two-shotted me and like. i have a pretty good amt of hearts, here
also next time im exploring first i feel like i'll never know if ive seen everything or not bc i'm all lost and don't know what i looked at and what i didn't :/
i hate to like, leave it and say i'll come back to it bc i know i probably won't, but games are supposed to be fun! and attempting to explore this area with all my armor at 3 defense is like. not fun. dying over and over: Not Fun
i feel like seeing or doing something new!!
what i need is my own copy of the map on the computer so i can just mark off the areas i wanna explore later
oooh i found an interactive map!! which i can't. screencap and annotate for myself, but
oh well, it's too much trouble to find one, and ps would be really slow rn anyway since i havent used it in awhile
however this map DOES have memory locations, so i'm gonna grab a few of those
okay NOW i found a shrine idk how to do. tbh i can't be fucked rn, i wanna go get memories
holy fuck the first memory i unlocked had like a PILE of dead monsters link just fucked up, including a silver maned lynel, which my ass has NOT killed yet, holy shit
ONWARD
HOLY SHIT the one i just got was in the trailers!! zelda crying on link ;_;
i'm glad tbh bc i was lowkey like...well i know you get her out of the castle bc she cries on you later
but no!!!!
also he strains of zelda's lullaby, them being covered in mud, and link's master sword! MAN
i can't get to anymore atm so i guess i decide where i go next...
tbh i wanna do gerudo next like my brother which means going thru lake hylia!! so it will be a long time before more plot, i guess
ah! the blood moon! gonna warp to the stable and watch it with that guy
lol he's all beautiful moon tonight, eh, finally the blood moon
UM HE'S FREAKING ME OUT HE JUST STARTED RUNNING AROUND AND SAID HIS BLOOD WAS BOILING???
"IT'S SO GLORIOUSLY RED, ARISE MONSTERS" WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU
and he acted totally normal after!
"oh you were researching the blood moon too?" WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM YOU FREAK
yep goodbye im leaving
upgraded my armor as much as i could with the fairy, STILL can't afford anti-guardian tech, am actively dying without it, will attempt gerudo and/or lake hylia tomorrow

watching it on their official youtube, live chat is using tilt controls apparently
(please note, i’m only watching the direct, i’m skipping the treehouse because i have work this afternoon i don’t have time for treehouse)
i sincerely hope animal crossing gets revealed, not because i’ve recently decided i do indeed like the game but because the fanbase is probably going to have an anyuerism if it doesnt happen.

i was really hoping revali was just gonna show up as a fighter, i know he’s already in as a spirit but it would’ve just been funny, link getting beat up so revali saves him.
its a whole army of anime boys, coming to smash.
and now a trailer for dragon quest, maybe they should’ve done this one first so people like me would know who the heck it was that got added to smash.
i still don’t know much about dragon quest, but the fact that this one has that retro mode still makes me grin.

Monthly Manga Review Index: August 2017
August was a month of transitions: here at Manga Bookshelf, our long-time colleague and friend Ash Brown announced that he would be retiring his blog at the end of 2017. Though Ash’s reasons for stepping back are understandable, I selfishly wish he’d continue Experiments in Manga. As his recent reviews of My Brother’s Husband and A Small Charred Face attest, he’s a perceptive, elegant writer with a unique voice, and a unique point of view. Here’s hoping that he finds his way back to blogging again!
Further afield, Joe McCulloch just posted his final “This Week in Comics” round-up at The Comics Journal — sad news for anyone who cares about good comics criticism. Joe was always erudite and funny, peppering his writing with memorable turns of phrase and incisive comments. Even when TCJ didn’t have much manga content, Joe tirelessly dug into his own private vault to write about oddities — how’s pachinko manga grab you? — classics — hi, Golgo 13 — and titles that cry out for an English language edition. I can’t imagine who TCJ will enlist for “This Week in Comics,” but that person has a big pair of shoes to fill.
My August yielded a modest crop of reviews: I Hear the Sunspot and She and Her Cat, two coming-of-age dramas about twenty-somethings teetering on the brink of adulthood; Melody of Iron, the latest Tezuka title to be Kickstarted to press; and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, a good-natured comedy about a salaryman who gets a second chance at life as a slime monster. I have a number of reviews in progress for September, including MB favorites Queen Emeraldas, Otherworld Barbara, After Hours, and My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness, as well Jiro Taniguchi’s most recent books Venice and Furari. I’m also in the process of gathering my thoughts on Hergé a Québec, an exhibition I saw at the Musée de la civilisation in Québec City last week. Stay tuned!
REVIEW OF THE MONTH
Stop the presses–The New York Review of Books deigned to publish a manga review! The title in question is Ichi-F: A Worker’s Graphic Memoir of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, which was released earlier this year by Kodansha Comics. Ryan Holmberg’s assessment of Ichi-F is markedly different in tone than most early reviews, which praised Kazuko Tatsuya’s meticulously detailed drawings, and his emphasis on the day-to-day routines of Fukushima workers. In particular, Holmberg takes issue with the fact that the author used a pseudonym, making it difficult to fully assess his political (or economic) motivation for writing Ichi-F:
We know, through press reports, that Tatsuta was in his late forties when he drew Ichi-F, so one assumes a fairly extensive resume of past comics work; what would that oeuvre reveal about his politics and associations if we knew his real name and could look it up? Alas, all we are really shown about Tatsuta is that he earnestly believes in what he sees with his own eyes, in the merits of hard work, and in the good intentions and dedication of his workmates and their employers. And he seems to be adverse to any of the personal or political reflection that transforms a report or recollection into a worthwhile memoir, or for that matter into a persuasive work of journalism.
At the same time, however, Holmberg argues that Ichi-F provides a measured counterpoint to “the superficial, fear-mongering nonsense that infects so much post-Fukushima reporting and art, both inside and outside Japan,” by showing what the clean-up entails, effectively “mak[ing] the threat visible and knowable and, if not controllable, then at least navigable.” Holmberg’s analysis is further bolstered by a thoughtful primer on nuclear politics in Japan, providing some badly needed context for understanding where Ichi-F fits into that discussion.

Morphies Law
Looking for a new first-person shooter? Look no further than Morphies Law. Focused more on building up points rather than killing – Splatoon, anyone? – the main objective is to help your team’s titan grow. However, instead of dying in one shot, your body shrinks when shot. On the flip side, the one shooting grows in that area of the body. It’s wacky concept that needs to be seen to be believed. Morphies Law comes this Winter.
Golf Story
This ain’t no Tiger Woods PGA Tour; it’s the ultimate golf RPG experience! Like any good RPG, Golf Story promises a dramatic story, diverse characters, unique challenges, and lots and lots of golf balls. And guess what, it’s a Switch exclusive, your home for golf RPG’s. Floor Kids
I’ve always wanted to break dance, but I have the dance skills of a potato. At least I can live out my dreams in Floor Kids, a rhythm break dancing game. With hundreds of moves and different tracks from Kid Koala, I can finally show off my skills… or lack thereof. Floor Kids launches first on the Switch Holiday 2017.
Mulaka
Zelda meets Shadow of the Colossus in this 3D action-adventure game. Mulaka takes heavy inspiration from ancient Northern Mexico culture, exploring a vast world of the Tarahumara. Mulaka arrives on swtich early 2018 with some exclusive features.
Travis Strikes Back: No More Heroes
Travis is back! After seven years, No More Heroes returns in this new Nindie game. Follow Travis and The Bat as they travel through six indie games with their own unique bosses. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
I just replayed this one, and boy howdy is it still fun.   I got it originally in 1988, and the NES Classic Edition version is pretty much the same with a few tweaks - some flickering has been altered, the opening crawl is fixed a bit, and the same unusual-for-Zelda gameplay is there.  During the latter days of the NES era, the game was referred to as either “Zelda II” or “Link” on school buses or on playgrounds around here, and “Link” makes a lot more sense once you place the game in history - it’s very un-Zelda in its gameplay, but ground zero for much of what would come to follow in future games.
This 8-bit NES game introduces towns of people, a magic meter, special sword moves, and the now nearly commonplace “Shadow Link” enemy.  It has a lot more in common with games like Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest in terms of layout, gameplay, and upgrades than it does other Zelda games, but it also had a nifty overworld map with enemy battles represented like random encounters from Dragon Warrior or Final Fantasy - but you cold avoid some of them.
Marketing
I’ve got almost no memory of the TV ad - it’s on YouTube, but it didn’t get the play as the numerous spots for the original The Legend of Zelda including one with John Kassir (aka The Crypt Keeper) which was most memorable.   Seriously, if you’ve never seen it, it’s like someone unearthed some early German expressionist film and made used it to sell game software.
The common thread in the marketing is some dude yelling out “ZELDA!” all the time, which is something they could have stood to keep doing for future games.
The second game got a decent spread in the pre-Nintendo Power magazine Nintendo Fun Club News, which was free and had some nice art in it.   As a kid I don’t remember being at all awed by any of this - I just knew I liked the first one and wanted to play the second one.
Gameplay
It’s a lot more like Metroid or other action platformers, with few upgrades of interest.  It’s a short game with 7 palaces, one slog through a mountain, and a bunch of little action scenes along the way.  Eight towns - many of which had names that would be used later like  Mido and Ruto - housed helpful tips and disiniformation alongside new magic spells which came courtesy of some of the earliest “fetch quests” in console gaming.
Jumping was tough to judge, but this generation of games was almost entirely defined by how good you were at being able to judge your jumping ability.  As Simon Belmont, or Mikey, or Mario.  Numerous pits of lava waited to dissolve your organs, plus there were many villains as strong as (or stronger than) you.   The Ironknuckles are tough, but even tougher if you’re underpowered.
Unlike other games, you have one sword.  That’s it.  You can gain experience points to power it up (like the magic meter, and your endurance for health) but there’s no Master Sword or Magical Sword waiting for you in a cave somewhere on your way to warrior-godhood.  You’ve got one shield, one sword, and one pair of pants.   As adventurers go, Link isn’t all that well-equipped.
His lack of preparations really shines as he storms through dungeons to find special equipment locked away from mere mortals.  Equipment like... a candle.  Or a cross.  Unlike the original game, you didn’t get cool new bonus weapons or weird multi-purpose accessories, but rather a raft or  a whistle which you’d need one or two times at best.   When engaged in combat, the only real changes you could make to your fighting style were “Upthrust” and “Downthrust” attacks with your sword - which really did make combat a lot more fun and exciting.   Every game would be well-served to incorporate these.
Bosses & Enemies
There were a decent smattering of creatures in the game, including returning favorites like Moblins, Octoroks, Tektites, and Leevers.   Zoras took an entirely new form as quadrupedal land lizards with fireproof skin rather than water folk, plus the RPG staple of a blue slime (and red slime) would appear as Bits and Bots.   You’d also fight lizard knights, bird knights, club-throwing bull monsters,  and super-weak bouncing werewolves.  It was the 1980s, it was fun.
The bosses were pretty nifty too - a horse-headed minotaur named Horsehead was joined by Helmethead the knight, Rebonack the knight-on-horse, the wizard Carock, the ambiguous Gooma, the dragon Barba, and the pain-in-my-ass Thunderbird.
Gooma’s interesting as the defender of level 5′s Island Palace.  He looks like a big muscular barbarian with a chain weapon, complete with Lemmy’s facial hair.  However, the fandom seems to be showing him as a Minotaur as official art goes... this makes no sense to me.  He made for an interesting battle.
Thunderbird was also dubbed “Angel of Death,” as it was a difficult not-quite-final boss battle that required you spend half of your magic meter merely to make him mortal.  And then you’d need to spend more if you had any intention of actually winning the fight after going through a giant golden maze with one preposterously tough sword-throwing monster after another.   To merely get to this creature took me about a month originally... and it took me a couple of years after that to actually beat him.   It was definitely a feeling of accomplishment.
Graphics & Sound
On an HDTV it still looks and sounds pretty great - I love most of the random encounter scenery, and the music is exactly as I remember.  The palace music is great, and the overworld theme is pretty familiar territory.  Oddly, a few of the sound effect do sound different - the most obvious to me was the crumbling bridge/falling blocks.   The character animation is still pretty fantastic, as Link has a few good poses.  Some of the enemies look fantastic, but most are just 1-2 frames of animation or are bouncing cardboard cut-outs.   The characters were colorful and stand out against the backgrounds nicely, with some of the most gorgeous 8-bit background negative space this side of Blaster Master.
Link himself is expressive, showing a big smile when he turns to you upon finding a new special item - but this pride actually can be your downfall!  If you find a new Bowl of Hearts or Flute or Candle, you pause to show off - and your enemies can still move and attack. I don’t know if this was a bug or a feature, but it certainly feels like a brief lesson in responsibility.  If you don’t do your chores of killing every single living thing on the screen, you might have to go through all of those battles again after you die.
A New Quest
After recovering the third Triforce and saving Zelda, Link gets another new adventure - essentially a New Game Plus mode.  You start out with your skills intact, but none of your stuff.  Your up/down thrusts, magic, and levels?  Yes.  Items, heart and magic containers?  No. You can bypass most of the towns completely and skip a lot of caves - fetch quests, searching out P-Bags for experience, and even killing random monsters no longer serves a purpose. The new quest looks exactly like the original quest, but you’re stronger.  There are no remixed dungeons or new twists to the fabric of space and time like the original The Legend of Zelda.
But Wait! There’s Less!
Despite being successful, this was Link’s final outing on the NES and this particular Link’s final adventure of any sort.  Depending on which version of the timeline you believe in, the Super NES (and subsequent GameBoy title) were prequels taking place in a different generation entirely.   The two NES games would be an alternate timeline more or less erased from the franchise history, with the 1998 Nintendo64 game The Ocarina of Time now seemingly serving as the central spoke in the wheel of the franchise.
We never got a Zelda III - I wish Nintendo would consider a faux 8-bit sequel, perhaps giving us a new downloadable game of what a new 8-bit entry in 1989 or 1990 might have looked like.
It was a fun replay... I just wish that, like other 8-bit series of this era (Mario, Wizards & Warriors, Final Fantasy, Castlevania, Dragon Warrior) that it got to the magic number - three.
