Welcome to Duplicity!
Below you’ll find links to tags and the new itch page (once part 1 releases; tags will be added as they’re posted). You’ll also find some general information about the game and what to expect from here on.
As per usual, this game is a horror romance. It won’t feature any NSFW scenes, but it is not safe for minors. Minors DNI with this blog or the game.
Game Summary:
It’s been several years since you’ve been home, and a lot has changed. After failing to meet the strict deadlines of your former publishing house, your contract was terminated and you were left to fend for yourself. Once a prolific and popular author of romance and adventure stories, you’re now forced to move back home to live in your best friend’s apartment as their roommate. Struggling to figure out the next book in your series, you’re faced with many life-changing events, such as having to go back to work a customer service job you thought you’d left behind.
As you navigate this new chapter in your life, you’ll meet friends, old and new, and perhaps finally experience your own romantic tale… Just don’t trust everyone you meet.

Here’s some potential questions I might get that I’m proactively answering now:
Why was the old blog deleted?
-I had a bad experience in the community and wanted to remove myself from it completely. I also had no idea where the game direction was going. Honestly, it started out with me wanting to make a yandere game with no understanding of what was going to happen really.
Why are you continuing with Duplicity?
-Duplicity originally stemmed from vague ideas about a horror romance I had started writing three years ago. Really, only some of the character names were similar. Once I started to feel like I wanted to come back and resume with development, I knew it needed a complete overhaul. So I went back to that old story and started piecing it together so it would work for a visual novel!
What changed and what can we expect?
-In the original demo, the game’s MC was around 20 years old. This has changed to player preference of anywhere between 25-30. Why? Because I’ve been wanting to see older characters in yandere visual novels, and just in VNs in general. I also don’t feel comfortable writing younger characters anymore. The characters’ ages will change depending on yours as well, which will be explained later. The only characters who have set ages are Mags and Melon.
-Speaking of characters, Sophie is no longer part of the story. I didn’t think about it at the time but I don’t want a minor to be included in this story when she’s not directly related to anyone, like a sister or a niece or something. In her place are several new characters: Nina, Savoy, and Melon.
-The game will be released in 3 parts instead of on a day-to-day basis. Part one will be mostly introductory but lengthy, part two will probably be the longest, and part three will mostly be focused on the endings of each route.
-The game will have more than just Griffin’s route. There are currently 9 endings I’m in the process of planning.
-As of the publishing of this post, everything previously known to the game is no longer canon, except for a few things.
What kind of asks can we send?
-Asks pertaining to the game and its characters and settings are all completely fine. In fact, it’ll probably help me develop the characters even better.
-NSFW asks are allowed! While there might not be NSFW in the base game (still juggling around the idea of a paid NSFW version), I am happy to write little fics if people are wanting them. I love writing, give me prompts!
-Hateful, derogatory, or other such topics that are sent to this blog will not be tolerated nor published. I wish to promote a safe space for everyone, and I won’t pay attention to any negativity.
-Silly and nonsensical asks are also allowed if they aren’t negative in context.
Alright this was long lmao but I hope it encompasses the general idea of what to expect from here on out! I’m not putting myself on a publishing schedule and I will update as frequently or as little as I do. I’m an anxious bean and can only do so much.

Hey Pink, random ask incoming.
If you got to pick the themes for one new princess in StP what would you choose?
I'm a simple guy you see. If I want to see a new theme for one new princess, then it'll probably be something related to divinity and dreams.
So for this particular ask, I think I can only explain this by making up a fan route to explore the themes I wanna see. So I'm sharing the silly thing I wrote in the server and actually taking it seriously.
So for our hypothetical Chapter 1, we as the player needs to be convinced that we've been traveling for a long way now. We're tired from the journey and we get real irritated with The Narrator's insistence of slaying the Princess. We don't take the blade when going to the basement and meeting the Princess and after some usual dialogue, we choose to rest our eyes and clear our mind. Hero explains this is to help make a more informed decision since The Narrator is grating our ears off and the Princess is getting antsy at us for delaying her freedom. Of course, none of this happens and we actually fall asleep. We don't wake up and the world ends.
Our Chapter 2 here is called The Lantern and we wake up with The Narrator's usual spiel. Engaging in any dialogue options pertaining to us looping will have Hero says his usual line and we get our new voice: Voice of the Somnolent. He yawns first as a response and proceed not to say anything useful and will snore very loudly. We proceed to the cabin and it'll look like something the Specter's, but more homely and warm, and the Nightmare's, the door to the basement absent. The entire place is dark and quiet, the only light to see is a floating red wisp at the center of the entrance to the basement.
Hero immediately comments how ominous that is and Somnolent becomes aware enough to show his intrigue with the wisp and encourages us to follow it when it flickers away and sways side to side. He won't make a comment if we interact with the mirror and doesn't care whether we take the blade or not.
We take the blade cuz Hero becomes real uneasy about the entire thing, with The Narrator hurrying us up to do our job. The wisp of light guides our way down to the basement. Down there, we don't actually see The Lantern as she is shrouded in shadows and also because we become entranced with the lantern she holds in one hand. Her voice, soft with something akin to chiming of bells laying over it, regards us with curiosity and teases us for sleepwalking.
The entire conversation with The Lantern will consist of confusing and cryptic dialogue, which Hero and The Narrator will respond to with befuddled comments. Only Somnolent understands what the heck is happening but even he starts to literally become unintelligible to us. The Narrator concludes then that this might be our second loop which Hero reluctantly agrees to but is hesitant in accepting because they just fell asleep, right? Did the Princess kill them last time? Somnolent dismisses the idea and suggests we go closer to The Lantern because She's our calling.
Since we got the blade, we can either stab her or destroy the lantern she's holding. If we don't get the blade, we only get the option to destroy the lantern. Either outcome will result to Chapter 3: The Illusion with Voice of the Skeptic or Voice of the Contrarian joining us.
Or we do as Somnolent says and come close to The Lantern. Once we do, the cabin will shake and we hear the sound of glass cracking. Hero will panic, saying that he feels something twisting before getting abruptly cut off. The Narrator will also panic before Somnolent makes an elated comment on how we're finally waking up before both of them gets silenced. The Lantern will then be taken by The Shifting Mound and when we go see the mirror in The Long Quiet we see it cracked along the edges.
So what the heck happened? Oh we just actually accidentally almost woke up to our godly form. Purely headcanon stuff but it does have some basis.
I always find it fascinating how The Long Quiet/Slayer is in relation to sleep. Here's some dialogue on the game that pertains to it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah. Totally not fixated on these.
So this fan route is about enlightenment, the discovery of one's self, the actualization of one's potential, that triggers a premature awakening that threatens the Construct's foundation. Through sleeping during Chapter 1, we get to see Her in Her incomplete glory and through witnessing Her as simply the solitary lights in an empty city, we have created The Lantern, like dragging the image of Her down to Chapter 2.
You could say this is love. That through the glimpses we see of Her in the spaces She's in-between, we become enamored. But the love between two gods of concepts is such a particular thing. This love that is all-encompassing (or is it all-consuming) that it forces The Long Quiet and The Shifting Mound to know themselves far too early in the game. It's like if you think love can save you, show you the truth and your purpose, but you aren't ready for it yet that it instead destroys and hurts you. Love that is so divine and unknowable that when acknowledged through the eyes of a mortal will inevitably break them. Solitary lights forced to collapse beneath the gaze of The Long Quiet in an attempt to become a star. It cannot handle it. Not yet. Not now. Emptiness that is supposed to be slumbering being forced to acknowledge its hibernation will thrash violently in its rest but it cannot know itself yet, not unless it wishes to destroy both of Them.
...
Sooooo, anyways, thanks for the ask bestie <333

My own thoughts I guess has based on what you have shared w us. An example from today: multiple executives who is their job to evaluate ability “just didn’t see” what O sees in MC, which might appear as tho MC is not exactly a best candidate of what is available, while you sometimes described S as “just has star power that makes things easier for them,” “were always meant to be famous,” “for some reason people want Seven to like them,” so it might sound as tho MC doesnt compare well w the others
The executives weren't judging MC and their band solely on ability, they were judging MC and their band on how marketable and sellable they were. They can think MC is talented all they want but if they don't believe they can make money off them, they're not going to sign them. That's not an MC-centric problem, it was a business decision based on where MC's band as a whole. Of course, that was before Orion came in the picture. MC's band grows and gets better with actual guidance. You have to remember they started as a group of friends in high school playing in their garage as a hobby. They didn't get really serious until their first EP, and even then it wasn't successful because well, these things take time lol
Plus, that was a narrative choice for Orion's route. If the executives signed MC off the bat, Orion wouldn't have become their sole manager and the delicacy of Orion's position in relation to romancing MC wouldn't be there. (Plus, MC wouldn't be part of BOTB). So they're just the first off a line of people who will doubt MC, the same way every band and every artist gets doubted before they make it big.
As for Seven, as I said before, Seven's strengths have nothing to do with MC as an artist. I'm aware Seven and MC's musical and personal histories are very entwined so it's only natural to compare the two, but MC is their own person apart from Seven. Seven being good at something or being popular is not at all a reflection of MC.
Honestly, Seven would resent that lol the idea that they're only as good as they are in comparison to MC.
MC can easily have that star-power and natural charisma/likeability but that's the players choice, which is why I don't speak on MC as much as the ROs because I have full control over the ROs, as for the MC, I lend as much control to the players as I can :)
Every decision I make pertaining to the MC, I always ask myself if it can be a choice-driven decision. I'm trying to make the MC as buildable as possible (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't).

anon i think the issue lies more in that you appear to be playing the game as if the main character you control is actually 100% /you/, and will always do what /you/ would do in that situation– which is unfortunately impossible. as much control as we have over mc, they are still a character with limited choices, whether that be in romance options or how they will be able to respond. i truly don’t mean to be rude, but perhaps it would be helpful to remember that the character is more an oc than a self insert. you might not be mean or shy or poly yourself but that doesn’t mean the main character can’t be.
That is a really good point and after a long day of being mom, I don't think I had the ability to convey that.
Yes, the Night Market MC can be customized. But, they are still a main character within a story. This is not a self insert story at all and I did make a post about that a long long time ago but it probably needs repeated now that the game has gotten bigger. There are going to be choices within this story that are going to be rough. And I am going to write them in the guise of a main character because otherwise, this story would not be written. In some extents, that will include situations about the romance. There is an upcoming scene with Gabriel, in fact, that I do not let you choose how to respond to him in a certain point. Because there are people out there that may be too soft on it or that would just not bring it up at all, and for the story, that does not work.
As for the idea of a poly route with Milo and Malcolm. Nothing you do in this book is going to be negated. Milo is also not going to look at an MC and go "I'm out!". But, due to plot situations, there is going to be more going on there. That "more" is stuff I cannot divulge but it does directly relate to what we are talking about. So, yes, what I am going to do there is a situation I am juggling because I don't know what is going to be best for the story that I am telling at this point.
Also, it does need to be kept in mind that I am one person and the amount of time and energy this takes to write and code is at capacity already. Guys, I have kids. I have responsibilities outside of this. I am not a studio that has the luxury of doing a ton of options. Nor do I have the budget to take my time and really flesh out things to satisfy everyones personal tastes when it comes to romance. Because this is what this is pertaining to. Personal taste. Why is your personal taste any different than someone who doesn't like monogamous routes?
All that aside, when I did start this game, I went into it with the full intention that this was not a self insert game by any means. I know I have lost people for that and I have never begrudged that because it just means The Night Market is not someones cup of tea. There is nothing wrong with that. But, I am going to shape the story and the narrative as I would a novel. Because that's what I enjoy writing. That is always what has so far made this game successful. There is nothing wrong with bowing out if you want a different game.

All this talk about the fate series you’ve engaged in has piqued my interest. If I were to dive into the series with no knowledge about it whatsoever, where would you recommend I start? I’m a huge mythology fan, so I’m sure I’d just eat it up. Speaking of which, I learned a bit about the legend of Cu Chulainn that makes me especially interested in him. In the original Celtic folktale, he goes to Mag Mell (the Celtic afterlife), and meets a priestess named Scathach, who gives him an indestructible spear named Gae Bolg (it’s Gaelic for “belly dart”). The spear is so heavily barbed that when it’s shoved into a creature, he only way to remove it is to use a bladed weapon of some sort to literally carve it out of them. As if that wasn’t bad enough, it’s also poisoned. Celtic folklore is wild.
Oh boy...
Gonna tag @avalonblue12 since he helped me out with Fate a bit in the beginning.
So...I'm going to offer two quick suggestions and expand on why this question has haunted this fanbase for so long.
If you want to get into Fate the purest (and best in my opinion) way possible, try this guy's Let's Play of the first route of the visual novel (THE HOLY GRAIL WAR - Fate/stay night - 1 [Prologue] - YouTube) Or this one if you don't like commentary (Fate/Stay Night Visual Novel Fate Route Day 1 Part 1 (No Commentary)(English) - YouTube) Be warned, the visual novel does not have voiced narratin and is in Japanese.
If you don't care about spoilers or such, try Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works by ufotable.
But in truth, you can start just about anywhere that isn't Hollow Atraxia, Fate/Extra: Last Encore or Fate/Extella because many entries assume you don't know the basics and these are direct sequels.
I suggested those above because they pertain to the original Fate/Stay Night, whose influence is felt throughout the whole franchise.
(More below)
So...why is this question such a hard one to answer for Fate fans?
Well, Fate is an infamously dense series that has a lot of interconnecting elements and ideas along with a deep magic system. Meaning that you can get the general idea easily...but things are so much better when you have knowledge of the series. For example, a certain character in Fate Apocrypha (a spin off) is rather compelling and engaging but with knowledge of one of the heroines in FSN, it adds another layer to her character.
So, I would recommend getting in through the Visual Novel somehow...but the visual novel is a huge time commitment and it might not be to your tastes. So you'd think there would be an anime or something to watch right?
Well, there is...with two problems.
1- Ufotable has only adapted Heaven's Feel and Unlimited Blade Works, the third and second routes. Fate, the first route which acts as the primer as well, only has an adaptation by Studio DEEN and it's kind of divisive.
and 2- The animes all have one issue- They don't have the inner monologue of Shirou, the protagonist. This is important because a lot of what is needed to understand Shirou is IN his monologues. Without them, it becomes very easy to misunderstand Shirou. To the point that the divide around him is basically between those who have and haven't read the original VN.
So while you can get in however you want and it is VERY MUCH worth the investment- getting the best introduction is hard.
"Well, how did you get into Fate?"
The doujins.
... No, really. I found some FGO doujins (ironically enough, based on Fate's Scathach) and I got interested in the series so I kind of just...flailed around until I ended up on the other end of the series. I still don't know how it happened.
If you're still reading this, even if I turned you off- I'd like to say what I think is Fate's greatest strength. And I believe that it's Nasu's writing. Or rather, the bittersweet way he writes. It really pulls on the heartstrings while making you feel satisfied by the journey.
I really do hope you try it out, as I can't recommend it enough.

Kat do you plan on ever writing HarryMort? Specifically after the first war (Voldmort wins in the first war). I am planning a Harrymort fanfiction and it's honestly very hard to level the play field. I have some question to ask you as an experienced writer. I find it really improbable for Voldemort to show any interest in Harry unless he was his horcrux, which is difficult to achieve with the setting above. I had to stretch the plot really hard to do it. Second, before reaching the point where Voldemort is aware of any irregularities with Harry pertaining to him being a Horcrux, I must have established enough development to their relationship beforehand, and again that is hard because like you said Harry is a pretty average character, without being the Chosen One, receiving the guidance of Dumbledore as his pupil and help from his friend as well as his incredible luck (which is honestly JKR'S plot armor for her main character). It's not wonder many stories take the "Harry having unusual powers" like necromancy, seeing souls, seeing magic, proficiency with one of the branches of dark magic, being outright trained as a soldier by Lily, exceptional intelligence... These kind of abilities is generally used as what attract Voldemort's interest to Harry. I also want to go that way half because of what I mentioned and the other half is pure self-indulgence lol. Tho I'm also going the necromancy route, I'm paying attention not to make his special magical abilities too overpowered, that would make things too easy or too difficult. Anyway, what do you think about all this?
I don’t plan to write it at the moment, no! To be honest, I favor Tomarry more: Harrymort usually implies Voldemort with the majority of his personality and sanity destroyed, and I'm not very interested in exploring this scenario. But many people expressed interest in the Voldemort-raises-Harry plot I outlined some time ago, and it pushed my thoughts in interesting directions. Who knows what might happen in the future? Either way, I won't be writing Harrymort for a long time because my next planned Tomarry is massive :D
I'm excited that you're planning your story, and I'm flattered that you asked for my thoughts on it! I understand what you mean.
As a reader, I absolutely love Harry with special abilities that make him stand out in the eyes of Tom & Voldemort. I think necromancy is an excellent idea - Train to Nowhere is one of my favorite stories, and I'd be very interested in where you take your plot. Necromancy and a unique connection with death in general is a great twist of Harry's canon resiliency to Avada Kedavra, so in my eyes, it's as close to canon as it could be.
As a writer, I think I would go via the prophecy route: the fact that Voldemort thought it pertains to Harry can easily explain his interest in him. He might keep a close eye on him as he's growing up, and by the time it becomes obvious that Harry is pretty much average magic-wise, it's too late and Voldemort is already hooked.
Either way, you should really go with whatever you like best: necromancy can be fascinating, whether Harry is average at it or a true master. The self-indulgence you mentioned is the main reason for writing, in my opinion, and as long as you like what you create, you'll find your readers!

Okay  !  After  devouring  most  of  the  XV  series  apart  from  some  side  quests  in  the  game,  I  finally  have  a  semi-workable  verse  for  Lightning.  Like  all  AU’s,  any  character  connections  I  make  here  do  not  need  to  be  set  in  stone  for  people  playing  XV  canons,  but  it  does  allow  me  to  more  seamlessly  incorporate  her  aside  from  ‘traveller  from  another  world’  or  attempt  to  mash  the  XIII  lore  into  a  blend  of  XV  and  Verses  XIII.
Which,  I  should  say,  I’m not  against  either !  I  may  dip  into  both  from  time  to  time,  depending  on  the  prompt.  But  ANYWAY.  Under  a  read more  for  those  who  might  be  interested.
At  the  tender  age  of  ten  years  old,  Claire  Farron’s  parents  were  killed  on  the  outskirts  of  the  Crown  City  from  an  out  of  control  daemon  attack.  Leaving  her  (  and  her  sister  -  verse  dependent )  alone  with  no  means  of  looking  after  themselves,  this  forced  the  young  woman  to  grow  up  quickly  to  survive.  Though  originally  looking  into  the  Kingsglaive,  given  the  ‘prestige’  and  skill  needed  for  the  Crownsguard,  she  didn’t  think  it  possible  for  her  to  be  accepted,  she  was  spurred  from  joining  the  force  on  account  of  her  age.  However,  her  determination  was  caught  by  Cor,  who  offered  her  a  deal  in  exchange  for  her  service.  If  she  resolved  to  train  and  work  her  way  up  as  hard  as  she  could,  she  would  be  given  a  place  in  the  Crownsguard.  More  importantly,  her  place  would  be  a  shield  for  Lunafreya,  in  the  same  way  Gladio  is  to  Noctis,  once  the  Oracle  was  safe  in  Lucis.
Upon  accepting,  Claire  changed  her  name  to  ‘Lightning’  and  threw  herself  completely  into  her  training.  I’d  say  she  had  the  most  contact  with  Gladio  on  account  of  her  training,  but  broadly  would  see  the  boys  only  semi-frequently.  Much  like  in  XIII,  I think  her  sheer  desire  for  strength  and  unbreakable  will  came  at  the  cost  of  a  lot  of  friendships (  and  her  youth  ),  so  she  definitely  would  not  have  the  same  closeness  as  they  did  to  each  other.  However,  she  would  have  kept  regular  correspondence  with  Luna  from  the  point  of  her  semi-official  appointment  and  likely  worked  with  Nyx  once  she  was  in  the  city.
Now,  in  my  mind  the  au  has  two  diverging  paths,  but  imo  one  is  more  ‘canon’  to  me  than  the  other.  The  first,  less  canon  path,  is  that  Light  was  able  to  help  Luna  to  escape  the  city  and  go  to  Altissia.  However,  this  is  limiting  in  that  it  stops  me  from  being  able  to  roleplay  Light  within  that  road  trip  section  with  the  boys.  If  Luna  roleplayers  are  interested  in  that,  though,  I’m  happy  to  play  her  within  that  part  of  the  verse.  I  figure  they  journeyed  together  after  the  events  of  the  film  and  she  helped  keep  her  safe  until  Noct  and  the  boys  arrived  in  Altissia.
The  other  more  canonical  route  to  me  is  that  Light,  being  a  Crownsguard  rather  than  a  Kingsglaive,  is  unable  to  use  magic  and  the  roles  of  her  duties  pertain  more  to  the  defence  of  the  people  than  the  war  or  killing  of  daemons.  From  a  political  standpoint  she  would  not  be  able  to  guard  Luna  until  she  and  Noct  were  married.  I  figure  she  was  able  to  escape  the  city  alongside  Cor  and  the  other  guards  but,  much  like  the  boys,  is  waylaid  from  getting  to  Luna  on  account  of  the  ports  and  other  political  roadblocks.  It’s  why  I  enjoy  the  idea  of  her  being  an  occasional  accompaniment  for  the  boys,  helping  out  in  side quests  and  occasionally  camping  with  them,  but  she’s  doesn’t  properly  accompany them  on  account  of  her  duties  being  strictly  for  Luna  and  aiding  in  getting  to  her  as  fast  as  she  and  the  boys  are  able.
I  also  really  like  the  idea  of  her  driving  solo  around  the  country  on  a  motorbike.  She  probably  helps  Cindy  procure  parts  for  it  at  the beginning  of  the  game,  much  like  the  boys  help  with  the  Regalia,  and  continues  to  let  her  work  and  upgrade  it  over  the  years.
Obviously,  after  Altissia  and  Luna  dying,  I  think  a  bruised,  battered  and  grief  stricken  Light  returns  to  Lucis  and  joins  the  Kingsglaive.  There  she  would  work  on  keeping  people  safe,  killing  daemons  and  waiting  for  the  King’s  return.

been debating some Cole romance options so here's my rough template for how I think it would start. Long rambly post incoming
Conditions for starting this: While you have flirtation options with Cole as soon as he's recruited (like any other romanceable npc), the romance quest can't be triggered until you do his personal quest that either renders him more spirit or more human. Neither path locks off the romance, but the tone of the romance will obviously be very different depending on that choice.
If you HAVE flirted with Cole before that personal quest, there are additional dialogue options the player can have with both Solas and Varric pertaining to how this might impact Cole's feelings for others. Varric believes turning him more human will open the door to greater depth of relationship, while Solas is mostly just offended he was asked the question and eventually tosses out that Cole's feelings will likely be as they ever were, for whatever that's worth. The player is then able to make the choice as normal. In the next conversation after dealing with the aftermath of the quest the player is given a last flirtation option to "lock" them onto Cole's romance
General Route Knowledge: Spirit or human, Cole remains an entity of compassion. He knows he likes you and wants to help you (wants to help you a *lot*, he's confused by the way you tend to become priority on his radar when entering a room), and he knows that before your choice he could feel a lot of romantic yearning and loneliness inside the Inquisitor. However, Cole doesn't always seem to know the thoughts he's reading until after he says them out loud and gets a response, so I basically think that he knows you want a romantic relationship.
He just hasn't grasped that you want it with *him*
Human Cole Route
You speak to Cole and he urges you, *Really* strongly, to go talk to Varric. The next time the player speaks with Varric it triggers a cutscene where he takes them for drinks, theoretically just to chat. Varric seems noticeably uncomfortable and keeps asking you questions about your romantic life, what type of person youre drawn to, and really really leading questions about your companions and advisors. The player can either indulge this or push back on it. Either way, by the end of the conversation Varric mutters something about not being cut out for this, apologizes to the player, and then leaves.
This happens again the next time you approach Cole, this conversation a lot shorter. Varric seems to be inquiring if the player is attracted to *him*[varric]. The player can shut him down completely or ask if that's even something he would be interesting, and Varric gets nervous and tries to bail again. The player follows him this time and finds him talking to Cole, refusing to go back in there while Cole is pleading with him to just keep asking questions. The player emerges to ask what they're doing and Cole seems visibly upset, insisting that he doesn't know how to help without knowing what they're thinking, he can't figure out the kind of person who they want and he *really* can't figure out the kind of person who deserves them. He tries to vanish only to realize he cant and runs off. Varric encourages the player to follow and they have a conversation in private where Cole confesses that he just wants to help them and the idea that they've been lonely has been eating away at him even when they *aren't* in the room. Which is new and confusing and upsetting to him. The player can either tell him to stop interfering with their love life (ending the romance quest) or tell him that he's been mixing their signals up and its him they want to be with. Cole seems startled, but not opposed, deciding that this is another part of the human experience he wants to try with you. You are officially in a relationship with him.
Spirit Route
After you lock in the romance, the next time you fast travel into Skyhold you'll be placed inside a cutscene where the player walks into the Inquisitor's bedroom. Standing there is.
a.the romanceable companion you have the highest approval with
or b. if you flirted with either of them, Cullen or Josephine (if you flirted with both of them the game chooses between them randomly)
They tell you that they've been hearing rumors that you're romantically interested in them and came to speak to you about it. If you don't meet the race/gender criteria for the character's romance questline (e.g, if you're a girl who has Dorian in this cutscene) then there's an additional layer where they're trying to let you down easy. The player is then given the chance to set the record straight and asks where they even got that information. They pause for a moment and all say some variation of "that's funny. i can't remember who told me...." before leaving with some degree of embarassment.
The player can then go to confront Cole about it. He says something cryptic about doing better next time and then whispers *forget* before vanishing, leaving the player to look a little lost before going about their day.
The next time you fast travel into Skyhold you're met by the romanceable companion you have the lowest approval with in your chambers. The dialogue is a little different depending on if they outright hate you or are just neutral, but mostly they're still like. really. like sure it takes all kinds but I never saw this coming from you- and the player's like hang on. this all seems a little fucking familiar
So they leave mid conversation to track down Cole, who they find sitting in the battlements above their room, clearly listening, and confront him. He's about to wipe their memory again when they tell him it didn't work, and they remember what happened. This throws him off because. That shouldn't happen. That shouldn't happen why do they remember? Are his powers failing, how is he getting this *this* wrong its helping thats what he's *for*?!?! The player makes the choice that locks them into a relationship or end it here in that they can either
-say they don't care why its happened, but this needs to stop. Cole reluctantly agrees to leave it alone and you're taken off the romance track for him
-The player suggests that maybe the reason they remember is Cole secretly doesn't *want* them to forget. He wants them to remember it not working out even with the person they're close with. That's also why he set you up with the person you have the least chance with this time. he's sabotaging himself and you because deep down Cole doesn't want you in a relationship with someone else, and in his core he knows you dont want that either. This leads to Cole feeling uncharacteristically frustrated for his spirit state. talking about how he can't get you out of his head. Its interfering with his work and whats worse is that he's more scared of it healing that it hurting like this. He doesn't want it to go away. What follows is essentially
Player: so help me help you. It won't go away, but it might make it easier to deal with. For both of us
Cole: ....It won't be like with a person. Is that a problem.
Player: No. I won't be like a spirit. Is that a problem for you?
Cole, softly:....no.
After this you're locked into a relationship with him.
Soooo thats basically what I have for an inciting incident. More to come, the little shit's given me brainrot.

Here’s one of my (many) Connerette ideas! I could’ve sworn I had already posted this, but I guess not.
Ladybug and Chat Noir defeated Hawkmoth when they were 15
Gabriel, Nathalie, and Lila went to jail
Ladybug and Chat’s identities were not revealed to one another
Ladybug found out Adrien’s, who was horrified
He told her to take the ring back because he didn’t want the burden of it anymore
He admitted that he had thought of betraying her to get his mother back, and if he kept the ring he might try
It was too painful, and the wound was still fresh, so he didn’t want to know her identity
Adrien needed space and time to think about Hawkmoth as well as re-evaluate his behavior towards Ladybug
Marinette needed to get away from the toxic relationships in her life and not allow herself to be held back because of them
The Justice League had known about Hawkmoth all along and came to an agreement when the villain first appeared that they would let Ladybug and Chat handle it
Batman had obviously figured out their identities already, and once the villain was defeated he approached Ladybug
He made an offer to have John Constantine and Diana Prince mentor her
Constantine because of his magical knowledge, and Diana because her mother had been a former Ladybug and it’d also benefit Marinette to learn combat from the Amazons
The Amazons could also teach her life lessons and how to stand up for herself, and Marinette could work on furthering her fashion design skills under Diana’s tutelage
She spends two-three years creating a name as MDC as well as training under them
She meets Zatanna through Constantine and they become good friends
Zatanna is 18 and already proficient at magic, so they work together for a bit
Anyways, the story starts after all this happens
Marinette has her life together and is searching for some of the very last missing Miraculous
You can choose whether or not her identity as MDC is still secret; it won’t make much of a difference
The YJ team is back together, either for a short mission or to just have fun and relax
Marinette is in some country searching for a Miraculous under the guise of MDC work for anyone who asks (not that anyone would, since the only friends she really has are Luka and Zatanna)
But despite not having a huge friend group like she did before, she’s content with the fact that she can really trust them
She hadn’t talked to Adrien in a while; she checked up on him briefly over the years but it was hard to establish a solid friendship again
She was thinking about telling him her identity though
But back to the story!
Marinette is wandering around, looking for both fashion inspiration and any clues as to where the Miraculous could be
Let’s just say it’s a swan miraculous—whatever animal it is doesn’t really pertain to the story
It’s warm outside, she’s dressed in a cute outfit: white tank top, pink plaid pleated skirt, white knee-high boots (or sneakers), a ponytail and looking like her best self
She quite literally bumps into the team
Marinette apologizes before noticing Zatanna
“Z!” she exclaims
They exchange la bise kisses and a hug
Cue the team looking all confused in the background
Zatanna treats Marinette like an old friend, which is weird because they think if she had any friends they’d know them
She asks what Marinette is doing there, to which she replies that she’s “looking for something lost. I think I know where it is, but I’m not sure yet.”
To any outsider it sounds like she’s talking about losing something, but Zatanna understands what she really means
She asks if there’s anything her and her friends could to to help
Marinette says no, but asks her to look out for a silver necklace with a small swan charm
At this point the team is curious, so they butt in and ask for introductions
Someone else from the team definitely flirts with Mari (I mean, how could they not? Someone had to.)
They all speak briefly before Marinette’s phone rings (it’s Uncle Jagged!!) and she has to go
But not before someone from YJ invites Marinette to meet up with them in a day or two so they can all “get to know each other better”
Cue her getting actual friendships and eventually mending the one with Adrien
I wouldn’t have instant attraction with Connerette; maybe just an “oh the other is objectively attractive” but not one of them actively pursuing the other from the start
Personality-wise, Conner is less broody and angsty than he is in YJ but not quite as bold as he is in ROTS
You can decide whether or not SuperMartian was ever a thing, but the less drama the better (plus I’ve heard that their relationship was kinda toxic, sooo)
It’s the snarkiness and personality that pulls Conner to Marinette
Everyone else realizes they like each other before they do
Slow burn, friends-to-lovers but not exactly
They’re friends but don’t start thinking of each other as anything more until something spurs them to
Conner realizes he likes her once he gets jealous
It’ll probably be Jason playfully flirting with Marinette
Like, they get introduced and hit it off so well
This is after three-four months of her knowing the YJ team
Conner gets a funny feeling when he sees her laughing with Jason
He’s snappy towards Jason for some reason, but he doesn’t know why
Platonic Jasonette + a heavy dose of flirty banter = a total BROTP + a jealous Conner
And boom
This could actually go the Jasonette route and be Conner’s POV with his hopeless pining
But again, drama-free route!!
Jason probably notices Conner getting jealous so he does something extreme since he just wants them to admit their feelings already

One And Done
On my commute into work today rather than listening to NPR as normal, I decided to have sports talk radio as my background noise. While I was dodging traffic, the voices on the radio were talking about college basketball players who play just one year in college before moving on to the professional ranks. The term for those who go this route is “one and done” and this phrase became stuck in my mind and caused me to think that many who are newer to the D/S lifestyle are one and done as well but not with college before moving to professional life but sadly one and done with their lifestyle education.
When I say one and done with their kinky curriculum, it seems that so many who are new must just read one blog posting, journal, or other online sources of information then decide they are ready to play in the deep waters of the lifestyle. The problem with this is what they do not know can and potentially will cause actual harm. Here are two examples that I found quickly after having the idea for writing this:
A submissive shared what was new news to her and this information was that her ex d-type enjoyed coitus where he would switch his baloney pony from her back door to her front and repeatedly switching up his portal of entry as the mood moved him without cleaning his tool between entering. Not so shockingly, the s-type developed an infected vajayjay that sent them to the hospital.
The other one was from a self-professed new D/S partnership where the dominant was proudly showing pictures of their s-type’s battered bottom. The problem is that the prodigious paddling pictures captured that not all of the d-types impacts landed on the dairyaire but also showed some landing on and around the submissive’s kidneys.
These examples highlight is that people must do better jobs of educating themselves before they engage in play and understanding the risks associated with the activities they wish to enjoy. To consent to lifestyle activities, a person must understand how to do the deed correctly as well as the risks that may come from it.
I want to take a second and share a belief that I have and how it pertains to both d and s types using the common form of play, spanking, as the example:
Submissives, I feel that not only should an s-type understand how and where to be safely spanked but they also need to do more than just be educated along with trusting that Sir Spanks-A-Lot knows what they are doing. In my opinion, a submissive should also learn by doing it themselves. I know that giving the spanking will not bring the same pleasure if any at all, as receiving but it is a process that will help the submissive better understand impact play, how to safely engage in it, and perhaps most importantly if Sir Spanks-A-Lot is spanking safely.
For dominants, I can hear the gasps of horror already even though I have not expressed my thought yet, not only must you understand how to safely administer wonderful wallops but just like my advice above but rather than give the sugar smacks, receive them. I do not feel that this might be enjoyable for a d-type, although some just might find pleasure, knowing how the smacks feel although internalized differently than an s-type, will allow for education and growth as a d-type.
I find that anything that allows one side of the slash to experience things as their partner would from the other side of that proverbial slash, it will make them a better dominant or submissive. Also, if you are newer to the lifestyle and partnered learning how to do safely engage in play is something that I think should be a together project and not something where the dominant learns how to ‘give’ and the submissive how to ‘receive’ but learn together with both sides experiencing both the give as well as receive. Not only will there be education galore but it will be a merrymaking activity that brings the partners closer. Finally, when it is time for any of the amazing hands-on recreations, both dominants and submissives need to understand how to both safely give and receive plus the risks that come with the activity.
As with all of my writings, please see this disclaimer.

Willing ︱Yandere Dabi x f!Reader
@riarora asked: “Could you do yandere Dabi x reader where the reader is one of those people who reads yandere fanfic and knows almost everything, including how to get out, but she doesn’t want to, cause it’s weirdly her dream?”
a/n: ahh yes some good ol’ self awareness. thanks for the request bby, i really liked writing this!
warnings: violence, swearing, kidnapping, suggestive themes
(2.5k words)
_____
It wasn’t hard to tell where Dabi’s intentions lied.
You’d spent more than enough time indulging yourself in mindless scrolling, reading piece after piece pertaining to a certain genre. One that in reality wasn’t the healthiest, but my god was it ever alluring.
Maybe you were lonely, or just apathetic to the red flags that this behaviour presented. Either way, the developing relationship you had with the man was one that you were all too familiar with.
At first it wasn’t obvious―you disregarded his actions as him shamelessly flirting. Dabi had a habit of pushing your buttons, getting you flustered and squirming under his gaze. You could tell he was enjoying himself, seeing what his words did to you.
Once he got bored of the verbal sentiments it moved on to something much more physical. An arm lazily draped around your shoulder, a grip on your chin forcing you to look at him when you turned away in embarrassment. He seemed to enjoy the temporary fear he placed in you when he came up behind you only to wrap his arms tightly around your waist, pulling you firmly into his chest. Every time he did it took you a moment to register the guilty party, but one glance down at the semi-scarred arms and you knew exactly who had scooped you up. If that wasn’t enough, the hot breath against the shell of your ear as he greeted you would do the trick.
If you didn’t know any better you would’ve assumed it was just his personality. The teasing nicknames and lingering stares could be seen as endearing for the most part.
It was when certain attributes bled into the relationship were you able to pick up on the motivation behind his mannerisms.
He had a temper―that much was obvious.
It was never a problem until you idly mentioned in passing conversation that you were saving up money to move away for college. He just...stopped. You thought he didn’t hear you, but not a moment later and he was laughing at you.
“The fuck do you need college for doll? You know that shit is a fucking scam.”
To be fair you never thought he’d have such a strong opinion. As far as you knew you were just some side chick he’d like to mess with when he was bored.
“Well I can’t just keep a dead end job forever. I’d like to move on eventually―meet new people, make better money, y’know…”
The two of you were at his apartment, your back turned to him as you made something to drink in the kitchen. You jumped slightly as one arm wrapped around your waist, the other coming to rest atop the counter in front to you.
His frame leaned into yours, your hip bones digging into the countertop. “What, so you’re just gonna abandon me for some shitty frat boys and student debt?”
The idea almost made you laugh. He was partly correct―the piling debt wouldn’t be fun, but you would have to deal with it just like every other student. As for the college hookups, well it wasn’t something you had actually thought about. You were feeling bold tonight, thinking that perhaps he should get a taste of his own teasing medicine. “Aw, you're not jealous of a few college goers, are you Dabi?”
The hand that was placed on the countertop came to drift towards your face, moving a wayward strand of hair behind your ear. “No need to be jealous of people who I know I’m better than sweets. Just worried about a pretty little thing like you getting hurt is all.”
You smiled at his concern, “I’m sure I can fend for myself, thank you very much.”
The grip on your waist tightened ever so slightly. “Can you though?”
“I don’t―”
“You can barely fucking handle when I mess with you.”
You turned around at the statement, slightly offended, coming face to face with his cold scowl. “Well maybe they won’t be as rude to me.”
At that Dabi’s lips formed into a smirk. “Oh, you think I’m being rude? You’ve got no idea what those little shits might get up to.”
His gaze was piercing, something you could never look at for a long time. You dropped your head slightly and averted your eyes to something else in the room to distract you. “I’ll never know if I don’t go, not like there’s much holding me back here anyways.”
The sudden feeling of Dabi gripping your chin between his thumb and forefinger was momentarily jarring. It forced you to look up at his as he spoke, his other arm still pulling you close into his chest. “So you’re gonna let a bunch of strangers put their filthy little hands all over you? Not sure I like the sound of that princess.”
The closeness flooded your senses with the smell of smoke and cologne. You tried to put some distance between the two of you, but the counter was still pressed firmly into your back leaving no room for escape. “I’m not saying that―I just don’t see myself having a future here. I’ve gotta move on eventually.”
He gave a laugh in response, but it was closer to an exasperated huff. “Nah, fuck that. College is a waste of time, and I’m all the goddamn company you need if that’s what you’re looking for.”
“Listen, as boring as sitting through lectures sounds, I'll take it over my lame ass job any day. And no offence but you do tend to give me headaches with all the shit you put me through.” You made an attempt to move out of his grasp, but you were only met with him pushing you back into the counter quite roughly.
“You’re not going to fucking college.” He was still smirking, but the look in his eyes that was normally vibrant seemed...empty.
Well this wasn’t the turn of events you were expecting.
You liked to think you were a strong person, but his persistence in the matter was unnerving to say the least. “That’s not your decision to make.”
He laughed at your attempt to sound confident, “I can do whatever the fuck I want princess.”
His cocky attitude could almost make you scoff, if it weren’t for the subtle feeling that maybe, just maybe you shouldn’t push him.
...But where’s the fun in that?
“Whatever, I’m sure you can find someone else to annoy.” You turned back around to keep working on the abandoned drink, leaving him to settle his hands on your waist.
“There is nobody else.”
That made you feel a little better, having assumed he only kept you around for entertainment purposes before moving on to something―someone―more serious. But at the same time it was concerning―what was so special about you to him? “Well that’s too bad, I’m not staying here because some asshole is lonely.”
Dabi appeared to be amused with your attitude, hearing the low chuckle from behind you. He went back to having his arms wrapped around you from behind, leaning the side of his head up against yours.. “Aw, you sure dollface? I’ve heard I can be very convincing, bet I could get you to stay somehow.”
You shook your head at his response, “Doubt it. You’d have to do something pretty big to keep me here.”
“Well, I do have my ways sweetheart. Just not so sure you’d agree with what I have in mind.”
Threatening, but not explicit.
“That’s comforting.” This time when you moved to escape his grasp he let you, drink in hand while heading towards the living room couch. You settled on to the worn out cushions, sending Dabi a glare as he used your lap as a footrest when he draped his body across the free expanse of the seating.
Without another word on the subject he chose a movie, letting the room fall into a peaceful absence of conversation.
_____
It was only in your nature to reflect on that encounter with the scarred man, given your expanse of knowledge in regards to the certain kind of behaviour he briefly held.
To be honest it was the first time he showed any real commitment to your questionable relationship. The first time he made it clear that you were his sole focus.
It was nice, but you couldn’t help but pick up on the red flags.
He was a villain. An extremely powerful one at that. He’d mercilessly slaughtered countless people―surely that had some effect on his psyche? If there was any evidence for that, it was this. Nobody with his history just implies something so vaguely ominous without being serious.
But you would never know how serious he was if you didn’t do a little more prodding on the subject.
Just to be on the safe side, you didn’t tempt him with anything that’d make him specifically pissed over one person. If he truly was the person you thought, then you’d have to avoid being the reason he killed someone.
Instead, you took the passive route.
By now you’d given him your phone number, or rather he forced you, saying he would stop teasing you if you did so. Of course he didn’t stop, but that was behind you now.
After that night he seemed a little more...insistent. Usually Dabi wasn’t very talkative, but now he’d taken a liking to keeping up with you through text.
Sometimes it was just idle conversation, but it always had something to do with what you were doing: where you were, who you were with. The talks were still short, but he made the point to ask nonetheless. It gave you the perfect opportunity to push his buttons.
You wouldn’t answer him right away, or you’d be vague with your responses to his interrogative questions. The endeavour to irritate him did little at first, but the more you persisted, the more he got attached to you, the demanding side of his personality started to bleed into your life.
He’d get angry with you for ignoring him. Dabi wouldn’t obsessively spam you with texts―no, he preferred the few he did send to simply disturb you into replying. Warning you that this wouldn’t end well for you. That he knew you were ignoring him. That he’d make you regret acting so stuck up.
Should you have heeded these blatant warning signs? Abso-fucking-lutely.
Yet as time passed and he only got worse, the more you wanted to see just how far he’d be willing to go.
In hindsight, the idea wasn’t the best. You really were going to move away for college, start a new life, maybe meet that special someone.
But Dabi had other plans.
As much as you thought you were being delicate with his temper, his destructive practices proved that everything you had done to avoid violence was in vain.
You should have seen it coming.
He could’ve killed you―should’ve killed you―but he knew this was what he needed. You were what he needed. And the prospect of watching you slip out of his grasp wasn’t something he was ready for. But you were ready for it, and that was the problem.
So Dabi smoked you out of the only place you could call home, along with destroying anything that’d keep you living with any semblance of independence.
The putrid smell of burning materials and, what you prayed wasn’t searing flesh, was the first to hit your senses. You were awake at the ungodly nightly hour the menace chose to send your apartment complex up in flames. If it weren’t for that you were convinced you would have perished in the fire. But Dabi probably planned for that, much like he probably planned for you to be forced out of the only exit that wasn’t being slowly cremated.
Out of the back exit and right into his arms, all the while you were still choking on the air that was riddled with deadly smoke just a few seconds ago. But he didn’t care, not when he had to stifle your screams with his hand, his other arm wrapped around your lower half, pulling you away from the complex where emergency first responders wouldn’t find you.
He let you look at the building that was gradually succumbing to the devastating effects of his quirk. You knew why he was doing it, but it still scared you.
“You see baby, this is what happens when you don’t listen to me. Take a good look at it, cause you’re never fucking comin’ back here again.” His voice was devoid of empathy, but why would he care in the first place? If anything, he was having fun with the matter.
It was your fault, you’d forced his hand. He wanted to be patient with you. Let you come to him.
But no, you had to piss him off. You deserved this for how much you put him through.
Maybe it was the lingering effects of the smoke that was making you lightheaded. Or perhaps the constricting feeling of Dabi’s arm wrapped around your throat. Realistically, it didn’t matter which was the final nail in your coffin. Soon enough you were passed out, body limp and defenceless in his arms to do whatever he pleased.
And so, when you finally came to, your predicament did not come as a surprise.
A chain wrapped around your ankle, secured firmly into the floor. You laid haphazardly on a bed in what you already knew to be Dabi’s old, fairly run down apartment.
He didn’t bother to wait for you to wake up, just leave you alone in the cold room to figure out what had happened.
But you were very aware of the situation.
This is what you wanted, right?
You pushed him. And now he was pushing back.
Out of pure instinct you gravitated towards yanking at the chains, doing anything to loosen them. Only after a few minutes of doing so you remembered just how you’d done your hair that day. Nothing special, but adorned with a few bobby pins.
And yet, when you removed one to pick at the lock, you stopped. Out of curiosity you taught yourself how to use the makeshift key to open such a device, but what was the point?
He’d only track you down if you got out. And judging by his character he wouldn’t be against some less than comfortable forms of punishment. It was clear that he wouldn’t hesitate to burn down anyone or anything in his way either.
And when you spent so much time tempting him to do exactly this, why would you ruin it?
It wasn’t healthy, but it proved how much you meant to him. In an equally disturbing and endearing way, he cared about you. More than anyone else had cared about you before. College plans be damned, you could settle for this at least for the time being.
So you put the pins back in your hair, laying back against the firm mattress.
You didn’t entirely know what Dabi had in store for you, but that made it only the more intoxicating.
Eventually you heard the telltale heavy footsteps approaching the locked bedroom door.
You should’ve been scared. You should’ve been fighting tooth and nail to escape your bindings. But as the sound got louder, and the locks on the door shifted open, you could only think of one thing.
It was dangerous, but you still wanted to know the extent of his pent up desires. And subsequently, how you had to play your cards to reveal these traits without getting yourself or anyone else killed.
But no matter what happened, you wanted this.

But  ANYWAY.  Under  a  readmore  for  those  who  might  be  interested.

Adrien’s Room and Memorabilia: A Sequel Post
Well, I hinted at a similar arc for Adrien in this post, so let’s brainstorm.
CW: mentions of harassment
The major difference between Adrien and Marinette in this instance is that Mari’s room is about her working through her social anxieties and developing meaningful relationships. Adrien’s focus is on his lonely nature, as well as discovering and cultivating hobbies that he really enjoys, and aren’t just forced upon him by his father.
Tumblr media
His room starts off with very few photos of his loved ones, namely his parents, Chloe and Felix. These photos are professional in nature, clean, crisp and very much lacking in color. Even Chloe and Felix are behaving for the sake of the photos. Notably, their photos show them when they are much younger, to indicate that Adrien hasn’t spent time with them lately.
There’s a large emphasis placed on the amount of stuff that Adrien has in his room. The video games, the TV, the climbing wall, etc. Everything is completely clean and dust free, because he spends a lot of time in his room, but he doesn’t have anything he’s particularly drawn toward, so whenever he’s done with something, he puts it away and grabs something else. His room is also likely clean due to his strict father demanding he keep up appearances.
The only exception to this are video games, but they are very specific ones: simulators. Particularly, ones that focus on dating and romance. Life simulators, farming simulators, RPGs that offer a romance subplot, etc. Even if the sim only offers the option to make friends, Adrien is fine with that. Stuff like Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons (the ones made by Marvelous), The Sims, Undertale and so forth are right up his valley. And again, lots of dating sims.
Following his mother’s “passing,” and at the start of the show, Adrien keeps a corner of his room dedicated to her. As more time goes by and Adrien gets closer to his new friends, this will shrink down to a photo of the two of them, and most of her memorabilia will be stored away. This will show that he’s open to the possibility of his father dating someone else, as was shown in “Felix”.
He will often turn to photos of his mother when he wants deeper, more worrying thoughts that he wants to voice and get off his chest, or if he needs advice about something and he doesn’t know who to turn to. S1 would focus more on friendship advice, because in this version, he would need to put in more time and care to make friends (Nino and him would still stay buds, Mari is still crushing on him but is hesitant to approach, and Alya is kind but cautious, with the rest of the class being wary because of his friendship with Chloe). Later on, he’s more likely to ask about plot-relevant stuff, his feelings for Ladybug and Kagami (and romance in general), his growing resentment towards his father, his meet-ups with his friends, and his discomfort with Chloe and Lila’s touchiness. Coupled with Felix’s harassment in “Felix,” this causes Adrien to realize his boundaries are being violated, and to also wonder if he has adopted similar behaviors. He goes to speak with either Sabine, Tomoe or Nino’s mom about the matter (maybe all three to get a variety of perspectives), and then with Ladybug. I would set this conversation sometime after “Frozer,” with him mentioning how he acted there, and apologizing for leaving her in the middle of battle (if the episode isn’t rewritten to include that there).
Overtime, he would start to depend less on talking to Emilie’s photo, and instead talk to whoever he asked for advice. Instead, he would talk to her prior to a larger battle or facing a bigger threat and had something he wanted to get off his chest.
Tumblr media
At the beginning of their superhero career, Adrien is into collecting Ladybug merch - he’s likely to even have one of those “Do it for her” boards set up. He has some Chat Noir stuff as well, but it’s not as prominent. When other heroes arrive on the scene, he’ll have stuff of them too. He would even go so far as to recreate the heroes in his games (mostly in what Sims knock-off this universe would have), and roleplay scenarios with Ladybug. He doesn’t fully get rid of his merch over time, but he does likely downsize as he spends more time getting to know Ladybug and the team.
There’s also the obligatory Ladrien scene that I hinted at in Marinette’s post. To recap, Chat Noir, during an emotional moment with Marinette, mentions that he has Ladybug memorabilia in his room, and that he ought to downsize. Sometime later, Ladybug comes to check up on Adrien for plot-related reasons, and discovers that he “too” collects Ladybug merch. Adrien is notably embarrassed by this, but Ladybug replies by saying that she’s a fan of his as well. This will allow two sides of the ship to feel closer to each other and open up about certain things.
Similar to Marinette, Adrien will start picking up little things as mementos from previous episodes to decorate his room with (a class photo from “Reflekta,” a copy of the movie from “Horrificator,” his autographed Jagged Stone CD from “Guitar Villain,” etc).  I also imagine him holding onto clothing items such as Nino’s hat or Kagami’s jacket, that get left behind after hanging out. Over time, he is eventually gifted a mannequin to display these items.
I remember seeing a post that called into question whether Adrien’s activities were something he genuinely enjoyed or if they were just foisted upon him by his father. I like the idea of a laid out arc that explores what Adrien might like to do in the future, by having him go through various hobbies (sort of like Daphne in “Be Cool, Scooby Doo”).
One hobby I’d give him from the start is tricking. (For those not familiar, tricking combines moves from martial arts and gymnastics, usually flips and kicks, and can be used to create super cool combos, yes I am biased about this). We often see him showing off stunts in battle and would fit Chat’s tendencies to be flashy. I could also see this becoming a hobby he shares with Nino and Kagami later on, maybe with the three of them sneaking out to meet other trickers at gatherings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(For those who need visual reference.)
However, I also want to give Adrien a more traditionally feminine hobby. There’s a couple of ideas I had for this, including, again ones that he cycles through as he explores himself a bit more. After meeting Luka and noticing that he paints his nails, Adrien might tiptoe in nail art. I could also see Adrien getting really into writing romance, starting off as a fanfic writer and eventually writing his own novel or comic. Alternatively, he becomes a poet. Maybe he spends an episode learning to sew with Marinette so he can make his own cosplays. Or he starts a cottagecore aesthetic blog, and additionally starts taking care of some plants to give his room some needed greenery.
I think for the sake of irony, it would be interesting to see Adrien eventually take up baking as a hobby. I know there’s a couple of AUs involving this concept already (I forget who it was, though I’m tempted to say @lenoreofraven but correct me if I’m wrong), but I like this idea because it would give him something extra he and Marinette could bond over in the future, especially since he doesn’t want to do modelling long-term. It would also give him a good excuse to visit the Dupain-Cheng bakery, and grow closer to Sabine and Tom. Perhaps they take him up as an apprentice, or give him a delivery boy job alongside Luka (giving that relationship a chance to grow as well, as well as a Delivery Boy shenanigans episode).
When he’s either in between hobbies, in a tumultuous state, or growing distant from his father, his room will appear far messier. In the latter case, it may be an attempt to rebel against Gabriel, saying “it’s my room, I can do what I want!” If he’s not comfortable immediately speaking out against his father, he may rebel in more passive aggressive ways. I could also see him roleplaying scenarios in which he tells his father off or planning escape routes for hero patrol or tricking gatherings. I think he would also have padded mats stored somewhere in he case he can’t leave, and wants to practice, or have his own tricking gathering in the house.
As he collects more mementos, they start filling up the empty spaces in his room, so when his father prevents him from leaving the house, he doesn’t feel as lonely. He starts finding ways where, from the comfort of his room, he can hang out with friends (like in “Anansi” where he uses the facecam to see what everyone is up to). More friendly, casual photos give the room some life. These mementos may also cause him to start downsizing on the Ladybug and Friends merch.
He will only attempt to remove them altogether if his identity is revealed to Marinette, and she doesn’t seem to process it well (at least at first). Anything pertaining to her, as Ladybug or Marinette, he may attempt to remove, until he realizes just how present she is in his life. He would then consult his mother’s photo about what to do.
And similarly to Marinette at the end, when they start dating, he would start to incorporate couple’s photos. I think both of them would have those photo booth strips, but I could also see Adrien commissioning posters of his OTP, LadyNoir, and bringing back some of his merch (in a teasing, well-meaning way).

Musical Offerings for the New Year || What is “Radical Music” in 2021?
Tumblr media
Near the end of 2020, a bunch of musicians populating a chatroom, including myself, each submitted ten minutes’ worth of our work to another musician, Chimeratio, who generously compiled it all into a set totaling nearly ten hours.¹ The work didn’t need to be new; just what we thought might best represent our abilities/style(s) and/or perhaps what we were especially pleased with. The set premiered in late January. Since I have some tentative plans for reorienting Brick By Brick this year, while not overriding its emphases, I wanted to share that music with anyone who’s interested.
I compiled the four videos into a playlist, although you can also access them individually: here (1), here (2), here (3), and here (4). If you care to, and are on a computer, you can also view the accompanying chatlog and read people’s responses from when they were listening to the live broadcast.
The compulsion for this project was sparked by excited discussions over and usage of the term “digital fusion”, most helpfully propagated by Aivi Tran, designating a computer-based body of work that for years lacked the rooftop of a commonly agreed upon genre-name. While describing my music has never been a big concern, even if it’s usually felt impossible (what, for example, is this? or this? I dunno!), I’ve appreciated how the spread and application of this term has brought together people who may have felt isolated.²
As “digital fusion” gained designative traction, I witnessed the activity in the aforementioned chatroom explode over the course of a few days. Before, a day’s discussion might’ve been a few dozen messages; now, there were dozens of messages every half-minute. This had positive and negative ramifications, the negative being that conversations often proceeded at a pace of rapidity which precluded concentrated thought. Eventually, I bowed out because the rapidity exceeded my threshold for meaningful interaction; but I was glad that significant invigoration was going on.
I wanted to share this music also because it intersects with thoughts and talks I’ve been having stemming from the question, “What is ‘radical music’ in 2021?” This was stimulated by a 2014 talk given by the writer Mark Fisher, wherein he contends that, were we to play prominent “cutting edge” music from now to people twenty years ago, very nearly none of it would be aesthetically shocking, bizarre, or revelatory (think of playing house music to an audience in the early 1960s!). Fisher also observes a trend of returning to music which once was seen as the future -- as if, deprived of a shared prograde vision, imaginations turn hazily retrograde; ergo, genres such as synthwave or albums like Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories.
It isn’t my goal here to argue about the “end of history.” Fisher’s time-travel hypothetical, however, rings loud and true to me. Visible musical radicalism has, for at least a decade, been strictly extra-musical, in the sense of songs like “This is America” or “WAP”, where one’s response is primarily to the spectacle of the music video, the performer’s identistic markers, and/or the manner in which the lyrics intersect with (mostly US-centric) ideological hotspots. Musically, there is really nothing radical here. Any vociferous condemnations or defenses of a song like “WAP” deal in moralizing reactions to semantics or imagery: how progressive or regressive is the political aspect? how propelled or repelled are we by the word “pussy”?
It would be a mistake, and simply wrong, to assert that the only music one can enjoy escapes the parameters outlined above; and my inability to coherently categorize some of my own music hardly raises that portion to the status of radicality. But the question here pertains to what is being made, and I think that if we’re going to seriously consider the nature of truly radical music today, we do need to question if such a quality can prominently exist when our hyper-fast consumerist cycle seems to forbid not just sustained, lifelong relationships to artwork but also the local, unhurried nourishment of creative gestation. Now, in my opinion, there are good, even great, examples of radical music still being made in deep Internet-burrows, and for evidence of that I would offer some of the material contained in the linked playlists. Moreover, I’d say that this quality can exist in part because these little artistic communities are so buried.
Let me share a quote that another person shared with me recently:
For culture to shift, you need pockets of isolated humanity. Since all pockets of humanity (outside of the perpetually isolated indigenous people in remote wilderness) are connected in instantaneous fashion, independent ideas aren’t allowed to ferment on their own. When you cook a meal, you have to bring ingredients together that have had time to grow, ferment, or decompose separately. A cucumber starts out as a seed, then you mix it with the soil, water and sunlight. You can’t bring the seed, soil, water and sunlight to the kitchen from the get-go. When you throw those things in to the mixture without letting them mature, the flavor cannot stand out on its own. Same thing with art and fashion. A kid in Russia can come up with a new way to dance, gets filmed on a phone, it goes viral quickly but gets lost in the morass of all of the other multitudinous forms of dance. Sure it spread far and wide, but it gets forgotten in a week. In the past, his new art form would have been confined locally, nurtured, honed, then spread geographically, creating a distinct new cultural idiosyncrasy with a strong support base. By the time it was big enough to be presented globally, it was already a cultural phenomenon locally. This isn’t possible anymore. We’re consuming too many unripened fruits.
The main impression I have here is that radical music today will, and must be, folk music. Our common idea of folkiness might be the scrappy singer strumming a guitar, but my interpretive reference rather has to do with the idea of a music being written, first of all, for one’s self, and then shared with a small-scale community, which in turn helps the artist grow at their own pace. This transcends a dependence upon image, the primacy of acoustic instrumentation, or the signaling of sincerity versus insincerity. It is a return to the valuation of outsider art, so rare nowadays. As someone who I was recently in dialogue with wrote, “Where can you find new genuine folk music? Pretty much just with your friends, imo. Even then, the global world is so influential and seeps into any crack it can find. I think vaporwave was radical and folk for a while. Grant Forbes made that music way before the world knew about it.”
Sometimes, a lot of fuss is made over what’s seen as “gatekeeping” within certain communities. It can be, depending on the context, justifiable to question and critique this behavior. At other times, the effort of maintaining a level of exclusivity, of retaining an idiosyncratic shapeliness to the communal organism, can be a legitimate attempt to protect the personal, interpersonal, and cultural aspects from the flattening effect of monoculture. Hypothetically, I welcome the Castlevania TV series and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate having introduced new and younger demographics to Castlevania. In actuality, stuff like “wholesome sad gay himbo Alucard”, image macros, and neurotic “stan” fanfiction being what’s now first associated with the series makes me want to put as much distance as possible between my interests and those latecoming impositions.
The group-terminology David Chapman uses in his essay “Geeks, MOPs, and Sociopaths in Subculture Evolution” is kinda cringey, but some of the cultural/behavioral patterns he lays out are relevant to the topic. Give it a look. If we cross his belief that “[subcultures] are no longer the primary drivers of cultural development” with our contemporary consume-and-dispose customs, we’re left with the predicament of it’s even worth attempting to bring radical/outsider art beyond its rhizomatic habitat. This is troubling, because it would mean that artistic radicality no longer might not only refuse to but cannot encompass cultural upheaval. It would be like if dance music were invented and -- instead of progressively permeating nightlife, stimulating countercultural trends, and ultimately being adapted as the basis for pop music globally -- only were listened to via headphones by a few thousand people on their own, stimulated a group meeting once a year or two, and never affected music beyond a niche-within-a-niche. That’s a very sad picture to me.
¹ Chimeratio has also maintained an excellent blog on here dedicated to looking at videogame music written in irregular time signatures, far preceding higher-profile examinations like 8-bit Music Theory’s video on the same topic.
² For myself, creative isolation has had its uses, because it has led me down routes that are highly personalized. The isolation can be dispiriting too. Although a lot of my music is videogame-music-adjacent, almost none of it uses “authentic” technology, such as PSG synthesizers or FM synthesis; and the identification of those sounds is fairly important for recognition.
