Day 3 for NaruMayo Week 2023
@narumayoweek2023
Day 3: Videogames/Pining
"Alright, so, here me out, Nick-"
"Whatever it is that you are about to beg me for, the answer is 'No', Maya."
Maya stood in front of Phoenix's desk with her cheeks puffed out and her small fists to her side. "You haven't even heard me out, yet!" she complained with a whine.
Phoenix gave her an exasperated look. "When you start your sentence with, 'Alright, here me out, Nick' I just know it is going to cost me some sort of amount of money," he explained to her, pinching the corners of his eyes.
The medium gave a small grimace while she gave the "so-so" hand gesture. "But I swear it's not a lot!" she promised. "The arcade by the high school has just got the new 'Steel Samurai vs. Evil Magistrate - Deluxe Battle for Neo Old Tokeyo: The Arcade Game'!"
Phoenix's jaw dropped. "Why… is the title so long…?" he asked her, completely perplexed.
"It just is!" she vaguely replied.
Phoenix gave a loud sigh. "So… what, is this an arcade game based on the movie you made me go see with you a few weeks ago…?" he questioned her.
            Maya scoffed, "Uh, NO!"
            "Oh."
"It's the arcade game based on the home videogame version that is based off of the movie!" she told him. "Duh!"
The attorney rolled his eyes. "Of course," he slowly said, over-acting his words. "Silly me, how could I have ever mistaken that…?"
Maya stuck her tongue out at him. "Well, why are we still sitting here!?" she demanded. "We need to make our way down there and get our gaming on!"
Phoenix rolled his eyes. "Maya… I have paperwork to finish up…" he informed her. "And besides, the last time I played any sort of video game was back in grade school."
Maya's mouth dropped. "WHHHHAAAAAT!?" she nearly screeched. She immediately ran around the desk and grabbed his hand, forcing him to drop his pen. "C'mon, Nick! We need to get you a dose of gaming!"
The attorney's face fell, looking completely exasperated and beaded with sweat. With a sigh, he got up from his desk and began to follow Maya out of the office, his keys in hand to lock up behind him. The Spirit Medium smiled with victory as she waited for him to lock the door and they headed for the nearest bus stop.
**
"Wow… this place is packed…!"
"Well, Maya, it is a little after three in the afternoon on a weekday, so the school just got out," Phoenix pointed out to her. "And you said the game is brand new to the arcade… of course these kids are going to want to play."
The other games in the arcade were completely abandoned, but the "Steel Samurai" game was crowded with onlookers and a line. When Maya managed to push her way through the onlooker crowd, it seemed the two people who currently playing were playing as two players - the main character of the "Steel Samurai" himself and the secondary character, the "Pink Princess". It seemed that the duo's streak was long - they had been playing since they got there, feeding the machine constantly with quarters to keep their lives up.
"Aw, Nick… they're not letting anyone else play…!" Maya complained to him when she sulked back.
"Can’t be helped, Maya," Phoenix shrugged, not particularly caring. "They got here first."
"There has to be some kind of law they're breaking by hogging the game!" Maya pouted, her cheeks puffed out.
The attorney gave a small chuckle, "Unfortunately, no… there is not. Unless they assault someone over the game, or breaking one of the arcade rules, they are there to stay."
Since they were there at the arcade, Phoenix figured he would cheer Maya up a bit by playing some games with her since they were all free. She had given him a small nod and the two went off. Maya couldn't help but laugh at how odd Phoenix looked in his suit playing a racing game with her.
"You didn't give me time to change…" he had complained to her. "And you're one to talk with your robes!" The proper response was Maya beating him in the race.
The next game they played was a zombie shooting game where they took plastic guns and shot at the screen. It had cheesy dialogue, and it was something that Maya knew by heart as she was reciting the lines with poor voice acting along side them. Phoenix was a little more decent at the game as it was an updated version of a similar game he played as a kid on a console.
After an hour of them playing around, they had won a decent number of tickets, but Maya still wanted to at least try to play the new "Steel Samurai" game. The crowd had since dispersed, but it was still the same two people at the game. Upon further inspection - they weren't high school students, but college kids that seemed to not have classes that day and were just playing at the arcade all day.
"Hey, do you mind if we can have a chance to play?" Maya asked politely, her hands clasped together.
"Buzz off," one of the players replied, a taller lanky guy with dark blonde hair wearing a red beanie with the local community college logo on it.
"Yeah, we've been here since the arcade opened," the other replied, him with brown hair with a few streaks of blue, wearing a red hoodie from the local community college.
"We're trying to find every Easter Egg in the game since we already beat it a few times," the first one followed-up.
Maya's jaw dropped. "A few times!?" she nearly shouted. "Okay, I get playing while the kids are at school, and you don't have classes or something… but let others have a chance after the fact!"
Phoenix pinched the edges of his eyes. "Maya, we can come back another day…" he told her.
The second player laughed, "Yeah, try to be here when we aren't, I dare ya! Listen to your Sugar Daddy here!"
Phoenix's face fell. "I am anything but that…" he grumbled.
Maya puffed out her cheeks in anger. "Oh, you guys are jerks!" she shouted at them. "Hogging the game from a bunch of kids and kids at heart!"
"I have no idea why I'm being lumped into that latter category…" the attorney sighed.
"We are paying customers, girlie!" the first player told her. "We can do what we want!" He then eyed her up and down. "I'll tell ya what, you can sit on my lap and watch me play, you're pretty cute." He then waggled his dark blonde brows at her.
Maya's face twisted with disgust. "Um… no thanks…" she muttered, her crossing her arms.
"Only way you're going to be able to play…" the guy told her in a sing-song voice.
"Talk to her like that again and there will be suit filed for sexual harassment faster then you pressing one of those damn buttons on that console," Phoenix then growled, his dark blue eyes narrowed at him.
The man gave a chuckle. "Oh, what are ya, some kind of lawyer? That why ya wearing a suit and tie?"
"As a matter of fact, I am," Phoenix smirked. "And I personally know a couple of prosecutors who would love to make sure your asses get in jail."
The second player paled slightly. "Hey man, we were just messin'…" he insisted, his voice cracking.
"One has a whip," Phoenix continued, not caring. "And believe me, she just loves to use it… and get your head out of the gutter, not in that way."
The second player then got up from the game, the continue screen counting down. He pocketed whatever quarters he had left. "All yours, miss…" he told Maya. He then gestured to his friend to get up.
"Dude, what the hell!" the first player shouted at him. "You pussy, he's just bluffing!"
"Am I?" Phoenix countered, tilting his head to the side slightly and rubbing his chin.
With a scoff, the first player relented and got up from the game as well, pocketing his leftover quarters as well. He then bumped into Phoenix's arm as he stalked off, muttering incoherently. The second player trailed off after him.
Phoenix let out a long sigh, which was cut off by a startled grunt as Maya threw her arms around his torso. "M-Maya…!?" he squeaked out.
"Thank you, Nick…!" she said to him. Was the sniffle he heard from her?
Bashfully, Phoenix scratched behind his head. "Eh… it's no big deal…" he replied offhandedly.
"You looked like you wanted to deck him though," Maya smiled up coyly at him.
            "I mean… he was…"
Maya gave a giggle, "I would never dream of sitting in another man's lap!" She then realized what she said, and her face turned into a bright crimson, practically glowing.
"What was that, Maya…?" Phoenix pressed lightly, trying to hide his grin.
"N-Nothing!" Maya squealed, throwing her hands out in front of her to push her away from him. "Now let's play some of the game! I call the 'Steel Samurai'!" She sat in the one chair and put a quarter in to select the chosen character.
"Wait… I have to be the 'Pink Princess'!?" Phoenix said to her, clearly shocked.
            "Yes!"
            "OBJECTION!"

Ok so T&T Thoughts™:
For the most part all of the cases are very cohesive. Imo Recipe for Turnabout is the outlier here. It's truly an iconic case, but it has nothing to do with any of the Feys and I didn't notice any foreshadowing. I for sure could have missed something, but this whole time I just kind of felt like it was out of place. It's not that I didn't enjoy it, I just don't know why it's here, ya know?
Godot thoughts: I like his character. The only time that really changed was when he was talking to Franziska, and I find myself to be very sensitive to how men interact with women, that is to say I don't think he was being sexist in any situation except for that. And it pissed me off, you can find the post (nvm i found it for you), I wanted her to beat his ass (which she didn't). He was getting frustrating, but it built up and resolved nicely in the end. He even admitted that he might not have been doing everything for the right reasons and it caused problems.I could honestly analyze his character for hours, and if you want me to, send me an ask, but rn it's 1 am so I'm doing this wrap up and going to bed.
We learned this game that I ship Phoenix with at least a quarter of the men he meets. Man deserves some good things every once in a while.
This game allowing you to play as both Mia and Edgeworth truly lets you have it all. I'm playing Investigations next. If I find Investigations 2 I'll play that after and if not I'll go to Apple Juice. That is to say I want my Ace Attorney: Mia Fey game. Give it here, Capcom.
uhhhhh I'm a simp? We already knew that.
Back to the first point, The overarching story in this one is fantastically done. The foreshadowing is very good, nothing comes out of left field. This is probably my favorite of the trilogy tbh.
Best thing to come out of this game def got to be my Gummy to the rescue post which eas apparently a big hit. Gummy really do got me.

Tag game: tag people you want to know better!
Favorite time of the year: Autumn! Halloween and fall decorations bring me joy, and I love pumpkin pie and the cooler weather.
Comfort foods: Anything involving potatoes. Also brown rice with stir-fried veggies and a cream-of-chicken sauce. ❤️ Also I guess Kit-Kats because if I'm stressed I will just eat a bunch of them lol.
Do you collect anything: I guess the US state quarters, but it's more like when I come across one I don't have and I just stack them in a little box. Also I guess Daevabad information (I run the Daevapedia Wiki) and so I'm always checking for the latest international book editions or bookish merch to (eventually) add to the site.
Favorite drink: Tazo's Zen Tea. It's green tea with lemongrass, lemon verbena, and spearmint. I've tried other similar brands but I like Tazo's ratio the best. I like to make a big pot in the morning, have a hot cup with breakfast and then stick the rest in the fridge for later.
Favorite music artists: This is where I reveal that I like songs but don't know much about the people singing it. 😅 I think I've consistently enjoyed Imagine Dragons, Billie Eilish, Alt-J, Gotye, The Weeknd, and Linkin Park, but otherwise I always get my music on a song-by-song basis.
Current favorite songs: I recently got into The Hunger Games series so the movies' best songs (Atlas, Silhouettes, Who We Are, Place For Us, Kingdom Come, Safe and Sound) have been playing on loop lately. Also Harry Style's Late Night Talking has been on the radio constantly so that's been stuck in my head too.
Favorite fics: There's this really old 2002 Spider-Man fic by LAXgirl (Down Came the Rain, ffn) that has lived in my brain for years, I love it. I also really love LaadyNaty's Daevabad/Nahli fics, especially I See Sparks Fly Whenever You Smile & You and I'll Be Safe and Sound (ao3). I also enjoy reading my own Daevabad fics lmao, because I write them for myself first and foremost. 😂
Favorite video games: The Metroid Prime trilogy, definitely. I love the mix of exploring/archeology and fighting monsters, and the music and background detailing for the world/levels are beautiful. I love the Uncharted and Last of Us series for those reasons too, in addition to the characters/interactions which are so great. Stray is also an absolutely wonderful game, and I enjoy the Ace Attorney/Phoenix Wright series.
Tagging (if you want!): @thiswolflovespizza @sleepinglionhearts @pai-likes-pie @sapphicmipha @praise-the-lord-im-dead @e11evenseggos @bookgrotto @biorusted @beevean @homomrdarcy @shajarat @rumaan @supernutellastuff @the-sober-folly @burnwithtears and anyone I missed

Among Ass Moment II
It was a busy day high in the Earth's atmosphere, inside the MIRA head quarters, where bad decisions had been made in the nano-fracture of an electrochemical signal sent across red's brain.
This is how it went down...
Me: sees black getting enveloped in shapeshifter's egg in the hallway
Me: dashes for the button as one good crewmate does
Brain: w a i t
Me: AM REALLY IN A HASTE HERE
Brain: yeah, yeah i know but-
Me: LITERALLY THE WORST TIME FOR OVERTHINKING
Brain: -but you really need check if they transitioned into someone or backwards into themselves!
Me: IT MAKES ZERO SENSE TO STOP FOR THAT
Brain: oh? fine. fine. accuse black, even if innocent. then everyone will accuse you for throwing a fellow crewmate under the bus, and the rest who is somewhat doubting that, will vote you out because you're always sus. go on, run for that button. no second guesses needed. not at all.
Me: sighes Listen... I've been playing this for a while now. It's in the body language... Black stood in the hallway, and then got enveloped in the egg... Definitely took their time in those settings to choose the crewmate they wanted to morph into... Easy hunch.
Brain: sureeeee, that logic didn't flaw you last time when you murdered your friend. she was guarding you near wires, kept you company on the ship the whole game, and you killed her in cold pursuit of victory.
Brain: i'm not stopping you. keep doing it your way, t r a i t o r
Me: Nice try, but I'm healed now! You won't guilt trip me into doing dumb things again.
Brain: ?! ...but... but... aren't you curious just a wee bit how they shapeshift back?..
Me: ignores stoically
Brain: um... err, how about this: if you run far away enough from them, but with them in sight, they won't be able to reach you for the kill; er, and then, when they shapeshift back, you'll have undeniable proof, save everyone, and win the game! sneaky you, huh?
Me: No. I'm a sensible human being who doesn't act on impulses of guilt, dangerous curiosity, or taking this game so seriously that I'd risk my life to gather more evidence. Nothing bad will happen to me even if I'm wrong. Besides, I trust my eyes, and I came here to have simple, unburdened fun that only the gaming industry can provide.

Brain: so, it was BLACK who morphed into WHITE, then chased YOU down because you saw their transition. you got killed in front of OTHER crewmates because you wanted to REPORT the shapeshifter, but stopped to do an unnecessary double check. now, everyone will point at WHITE'S double, who was actually BLACK, and who planned to FRAME WHITE SINCE THE BEGINNING!

AA7 Speculation Post: One Year Later
here we go again.
A year and a day ago, I made a speculation post about if/when we’d ever be seeing AA7. Obviously, my claim that AA7 would be announced in September 2020 did not turn out to be true, but later that year we did get a leaked calendar containing information on the new ports for Chronicles, and also plans for a new aa7, which I summarized in this post.
Now that we have Chronicles we can verify that the leaks contained legitimate information (as if a statement from Capcom saying they were hacked wasn’t legitimate enough). So that leaves us with one key question: is AA7 still happening? If so, when can we expect it? As well, what other information from the leaked calendar can we consider, especially with early sales data on Chronicles? In addition, what are the implications of this new survey on Chronicles from Capcom?
All of that will be discussed under the cut so that this doesn’t take up too much space.
Revisiting The Calendar
Once again, here is a rough translation of the calendar that was present in the leaks:
Tumblr media
As a note, in this post, I’ll be referring to our new games as “Chronicles” to prevent this from being blocked by people avoiding spoilers.
So: this original calendar, generated before the pandemic, had Chronicles releasing in Q1 of FY2021 - and it’s also important to note that in Japan, each fiscal year starts in April 1st, so FY2021 is actually April-June 2021. This shows that Chronicles was pushed back about a quarter from their expected release date. However, Chronicles was a port of already existing games, therefore somewhat less work was needed on them - upscaling models and textures, adding in some new features like autoplay and story mode, and of course, the English translation and voicework were needed, which is still a lot of course, but less compared to development on an entirely new game. In addition to that, the pandemic hit AA7 in its early development stage, assuming this schedule was still being followed by the time the pandemic hit. That could cause more delays than expected.
So the original plan was for AA7 to be released in Q3 of 2021, which corresponds to October-December, aligning with the 20th anniversary of the series in October. While it’s a desirable goal, it’s quite likely the pandemic pushed it back at least a quarter, if not more, if not cancelled it entirely. ... haha.
We’ll only know the fate of AA7 for certain when it’s announced. Which it is possible it may never be. However, I have two theories for, if AA7 is getting an announcement, when it will be:
1) Sometime during September 2021, either in the leadup to or during Tokyo Game Show this year. These are for the same reasons as I outlined in my initial speculation post. It’s a popular time for Ace Attorney game announcements, after all. TGS, according to what I can find, will be held online this year from September 30th to October 3rd. If Capcom announces AA7 earlier in September through Famitsu, like they did with AA6 for example, then we can expect to get some information during TGS...
2) Sometime during a 20th Anniversary Event, possibly in October 2021. I’m assuming AA is planning something for the 20th anniversary - Chronicles wasn’t really marketed as a 20th anniversary release, for instance. If they can’t release a new game for the 20th anniversary (which at this rate, seems unlikely, as we’re about two months out from that with no word about it) then an announcement would be just as good at generating hype for it.
Naturally, if we reach this time next year with absolutely no news on AA7, it’s probably safe to say it’s been cancelled or at least delayed so severely that anything we currently know about it isn’t worth much.
There’s one more point of interest on the calendar: reconsidering the porting of 456. I feel that this depends heavily on how well the Chronicles ports are doing; if it’s not financially viable to keep porting games, then why bother? So, let’s take a look at that.
The Success of Chronicles
As I write this, it’s about two and a half weeks since the release of Chronicles worldwide. So... how did the games do? It’s a bit hard to tell, especially as I am not a game marketer and don’t know the expectations for Chronicles. What is obvious is that, if Chronicles does much better than expected, porting 456 and possibly even the investigations games seems likely. (If Chronicles, indeed, does especially well in the West, than a porting of the investigations games and localization of investigations 2 after ten years could very well be possible.) If Chronicles does absolutely terribly, it damages the chances of porting, and possibly of continuing the series. If it does terribly especially in the West, where the games are essentially new, it could damage the chances of any new games being localized at all.
So, a lot is riding on this, and I don’t know enough to tell how well it did. Here’s what I have found, however:
Nintendo Enthusiast reports on Famitsu sales of Switch games, and overall thinks it’s not doing so great. Chronicles ranks third on the list of Switch sales in its first week, with 14,460 units sold, over 4000 less than NEO: The World Ends With You, which was released on July 27th. Keep in mind that Chronicles was released in Japan on July 29th, which is two days later, and that these are only Japanese sales (where they’ve had Chronicles for years on both mobile and 3DS) and only Switch sales, where NEO:TWEWY is currently only available on Switch and PS4 (Chronicles has the additional platform of Steam, where there could be many more sales). In the next week, Chronicles ranked 22 overall, with NEO:TWEWY at 23, though of course they’re still a little less than 4000 units behind NEO:TWEWY overall. Slightly closing the gap, I guess.
How about overseas data, then? ... It’s hard to tell. I can find this report from gamespot which discusses the top 20 games sold in the US in July, and Chronicles is not on the list, while NEO:TWEWY is at 16. However, they don’t give any number for the units sold, and it seems that they aren’t considering digital sales for a lot of them, so it’s hard to tell how much of a hit that is.
However, let’s go back to Japanese sales for a bit, and look at the 2019 Trilogy re-release for a comparison against Chronicles. Allegedly, combined Switch and PS4 sales in the first week of the trilogy’s release only amounted to about 8000 units, a little more than half that of Chronicles’ Switch sales. It’s also important to note that the 2019 trilogy ended up being the only ace attorney game to sell over a million copies. Ace Attorney is not a big series; I’m sure Capcom takes this into account when considering sales data, especially for ports. If Chronicles does end up doing better than the trilogy overall, it’s definitely looking good for ports and especially so for Chronicles.
However, there’s more to this than just sales data.
The Survey
Capcom now has a user survey for Chronicles, which you can answer even if you’re partway through the first game. I believe it’s only open until September 30 2021, so if you think you can finish the game before then, I’d recommend filling it out once you’re done so that you can give the best feedback.
It asks you a bunch of questions like what platform you bought it on, why you bought it, your expectations, and all sorts of detailed questions on the various mechanics, difficulty and enjoyment of the trials and investigations, satisfaction of visuals, plot, characters, music, and even free response sections for what you liked and disliked about the game. It’s a very detailed survey that’s pretty long but I think is worth filling out. At the end they ask you to fill out some demographic questions (such as age, gender (male, female, other), country, what kind of things you like to spend money on, and what kind of games you like, what platforms you have to play games on). But what’s possibly the most interesting question is this:
“If a new [Chronicles] game is released in the future, do you think you would buy it?”
This means that, depending on the answers to the survey, they could very well decide to work on a third game to Chronicles.
This has huge implications for the future of the series. I’ll probably make a separate post on plot-related stuff later, but for now... let’s talk about logistics.
In my initial AA7 speculation post I said I highly doubted that they would ever make another Chronicles game. I also said that they probably never would be localized, so, guess who’s a clown now.
Right now the AA series is in a bit of a dry period, with no new games having been released in the last four years. As well, with Yamazaki (the director of the investigations games and AA5/6) having left Capcom, the next director of the mainline games is completely unknown. As described in this video, the main reason Chronicles ever came about was because Capcom went ahead with mainline AA5 before Takumi could come back from the Layton crossover. Now, since 2017, we don’t really know what Takumi is working on. It’s possible he’s gone back to mainline to work on AA7 (though of course, there is absolutely no evidence suggesting that he has, so definitely don’t take that as any sort of confirmation).
However, if we do get a Chronicles 3, it’s quite likely Takumi would return to work on that, as he directed the previous two games. In addition, if Chronicles ends up being such a success to completely eclipse mainline (from what I’ve heard, though I have no serious proof, Resolve is considered as highly rated as T&T by many Japanese fans) then the series could permanently go down the road of writing more Chronicles games, leaving mainline stagnant (which, let’s be real, it’s already stagnating). The success of that is uncertain considering how neatly our current Chronicles duology wraps up, but... we’ll have to see how things unfold in the future.
For now, I highly recommend filling out the survey to give your input to the series’ future directions. Maybe mention that you want localized investigations 2 somewhere in the free response section because uhh I forgot to do it in mine. do that for me.
TL;DR
Main takeaways from this post are:
- I personally expect an AA7 announcement either during TGS or a 20th anniversary event
- If Chronicles does extremely well, then 456 ports are likely to happen, and I personally speculate investigations ports (along with localized investigations 2) will as well.
- Fill out this Chronicles survey before September 30th to give your input on the games and possibly the future direction of the series. I recommend completing the games before you do, but if you think you won’t before September 30th, you can fill it out at any time.
- We Very Well May Get Another Chronicles Game. Who saw that coming. Not me.
Thanks if you read through all of this, let’s hope September/October doesn’t leave me looking like a fool again.

Tagged by @succdale who did not think I would do this based on twenty years of observed behavior BUT CURVEBALL I'M DOING IT ANYWAY
Three ships:
1. Buck/Eddie 911, THE FIC FIXATION DU JOUR. Sometimes I find a son and I say "my boy needs a LOVING FAMILY" and then he meets a single dad who becomes the person who knows and trusts him best in the entire world, and whose kid he loves like his own, but the showrunners are COWARDS and CRIMINALS and it's just not going to happen, hence: the fic.
2. Buck/Taylor 911. Sometimes cowards and criminals make some points? BUCK/TAYLOR...IT FUCKING RULES ACTUALLY. I am extremely high on them this week because @succdale just watched S5 and Finally I Am Understood. It's fandom and we all know this but HAVING A FRIEND TO SHARE THESE FEELINGS WITH IS A BEAUTIFUL THING!!!!! Listen. I watch 911 with a heart full of love but also rage, constantly keeping a mental tally of a) Who Is Supporting My Perfect Son Buck Who Has Literally Only Done One Wrong Thing Ever And It Wasn't Even That Big A Deal, and b) Who Is Inexplicably Not Supporting Him And Needs To Answer For This At The Hague. AND TAYLOR SHOWS UP! SHE'S DOING THE WORK, FOLKS! IT'S GOOD! IT'S EXTREMELY GOOD!
3. Rich Joe/Poor Joe from 2 Joe 2 Millionaire. (It's not called 2 Joe 2 Millionaire but it should be.) I don't need more people to watch this show for the sake of having there be conversation around this show, because the show is whatever. I need more people to watch this show so that THE WORD CAN GET OUT THAT 2 JOE 2 MILLIONAIRE AUs NEED TO BE A STAPLE OF EVERY FANDOM WE'VE GOT. THESE NEED TO BE THE NEW COFFEE SHOP AU. The Joes can't be 100% honest with anyone but each other? They keep going on group dates with all these women where the Joes have to step away for some alone time so that Rich Joe can talk Poor Joe through an absolute meltdown brought on by this one woman that Rich Joe wishes Poor Joe would see isn't any good for him? They start and end every episode in quiet domestic bliss at THE GENTLEMEN'S QUARTERS? I don't care if anyone else ever learns these men's names but I need that one breakout hit AU to exist so that other people can be like "okay, this is exquisite" and it can become a common premise.
First ever ship: I'm going to say this was Rachel/Tobias from Animorphs. Nine year old dudski lived for that shit.
Last song: Last song I listened to was Liz Phair - Why Can't I, last song added to the rotation was Travis Tritt - Bible Belt aka the end credits song from My Cousin Vinny.
Last film: 12 Angry Men! I said it in tags already but THAT MOVIE FUCKS? Like I knew it was a classic but I was WILDLY invested the entire time.
Currently reading: I'm reading a book a week this year! I'm about to start Blood Sweat and Pixels by Jason Schreier bc the ebook was (and still is) on sale for 1.99. I read Of Mice and Men the other day because it was the end of the week and I hadn't read anything and needed a quick gimme.
Currently watching: Weekly: The Righteous Gemstones, The Gilded Age, The Amazing Race, Abbott Elementary, Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer. Just finished Yellowjackets yesterday, starting My Country: The New Age this week.
Currently playing: Adding this in! I'm in the middle of three games right now which is usually a no-no for me but eh, with these three it works. I take a break between cases in The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles so I don't burn out, Slay the Spire has no story so it's easy enough to balance with other games, and I'm like two thirds of the way through A Night in the Woods.
Currently consuming: Cinnamon raisin English muffin and iced coffee...the breakfast of champions.
Currently craving: I don't really do food cravings BUT I NEED A NEW PHONE
I'm not tagging anyone this is where those years of observed behavior come back in

Please please please play PLvsPW:AA. The game is amazing (for 90% of it, the ending gets really convoluted so it's only good by the end)
You have:
WITCHES
A very adorable dog called Constantine!!
An amazing storyline!! (Although it is most definitely darker than most Professor Layton games (I think?) and Ace Attorney games so yeah)
Lots of new game mechanics that you wouldn't find in any mainline AA game!! (Although you would find them in the DGS games which is to say get ready for the DGS localisation cos it's coming this year xx)
The cutscenes are REALLY well animated (there's this one scene with Professor Layton which I'm not gonna spoil, but if you know, you know)
I'm not going to speak on how good it is compared to other Professor Layton games cos I gave up a quarter through the first game and also I watched a playthrough so yeah BUT the puzzles do look very fun :))
It's set in a really ye olde something kind of setting so there's that too!
Cons:
Several plot holes
A lot of people hate the voice acting in the game, especially the voice acting for Maya and Phoenix, but personally I think it's fine so take that as you will
As you can see, the pros outweigh the cons so if you ever get the chance to play it, please do!!

Review - Yakuza 3 Remastered (2009 - 2019)
My quest to break every single bicycle in Kamurocho has reached an interesting point. Yakuza 3 Remastered. When talking about the Yakuza series, this seems to be the point where people make that little waving motion by their throats and talks about ‘skipping’ come into play. In the beautiful landscape that is Yakuza, it seems to be the consensus that Yakuza 3 is the nadir. So it was with some trepidation that I fired it up for the first time, expecting a lesson in frustration and disappointment.
It wasn’t that. Certainly, it was a bit of a drop down from the heavy-hitter that was Yakuza Kiwami 2 but that’s to be expected. This isn’t a new game built on the ashes of the original, it’s just a remaster. A new coat of paint and some PC optimisation. Once you get past that though, you’re left with a fairly pleasant game. I can understand why people are down on it but for those of us new to the series - who were left with a hole in our heart after Kiwami 2 - then Yakuza 3 will satisfy. For casual fans of the series though, I wouldn’t blame you for giving it a miss.
Tumblr media
Let’s unpack that thought by breaking it down into the three main parts of a Yakuza game: the combat, the side content and the plot. We’ll start with the bit that everyone knows about. The punching, the kicking and the bicycles. Yakuza 3 takes us back to the good old days of the Dragon Engine, before Kiwami 2 filled all its enemies with helium and replaced Kiryu’s fists with jackhammers. It’s actually quite refreshing to be back, especially as we have a few new Heat Actions to play with.
If you’re unfamiliar with these, you basically manauevor an enemy into position, press a button and watch as Kiryu gives your enemy a slow, painful death. It’s nice. A personal favourite of mine was used when running towards four enemies. Kiryu decides a takes a leaf out of anime and flashes between enemies with supersonic speed, knocking each to the ground. Couple that with the usual strike-block-parry system that the Dragon Engine brings in, and you have a fairly satisfying game.
Keep in mind though that this is no Yakuza 0. At this point, it’s still finding its feet. As such, it brings along a few annoyances for the ride. The most notable being the blocking. This is usually the primary reason that people hate on Yakuza 3. Every single bloody enemy blocks. Even your lowest, gruntiest nobody seems to be able to block the heavy blows of 'punch-out-a-tiger’ Kiryu. This makes fights take twice as long, even when enemies aren’t stunlocking you. See, when you knock enemies into walls, you can keep hitting them until they eventually drop. Regrettably, they can do the same to you. Ouch.
Tumblr media
So the combat is okay, nothing amazing. Let’s check the side content next, because I want to save the plot until last. Well, it’s clear that Yakuza 3 is trying to push the boat out when it comes to stuff to do. We’ve got the usual pool, darts, bowling and baseball. Golf also returns, but this time it’s a full on golf course. Multiple clubs, windspeed, flagpoles in holes, the whole nine yards. It’s nice. As is the Coliseum, which is pretty identical to how it was in the Kiwami games. We even have a precursor to the hostess club mini-game found in the later titles. Essentially, you work to turn a single hostess into the best one around by dressing them up and teaching them how to chat to men. It’s not really my cup of tea.
The side stories are more why I’m here but they’re a bit of a mixed bag. There are some nice ones, such as the ones surrounding Kiryu’s orphanage. Oh yeah, he has an orphanage. We’ll get to that. Far too many of them are just excuses for a quick fight though, without much substance. There are some massive exceptions of course, including the almost Ace Attorney-esque side quest where we investigate a murder in Cafe Alps. Like everything else though, the side content in Yakuza 3 Remastered falls short of greatness, relying too much on the classic ‘Kiryu gets scammed’ plot point.
Well if the combat and side content doesn’t quite blow me away, what about the plot? Oh boy. To damn with faint praise, it had a lot of potential. It opens with our man Kazuma Kiryu leaving Kamorocho to run an orphanage in Okinawa. This section drags on a bit but it sets the scene wonderfully, and Downtown Ryukyu has a very different feel to Kamorocho. It was quite refreshing. Unfortunately, it’s when Yakuza 3 tries to bring in its conflict that everything gets a bit muddled. It starts off with Kiryu’s land being threatened, due to a pair of politicians attempting to force through expansion plans in Okinawa. That’s pretty fertile ground for a plotline, to be honest.
Tumblr media
But this is a Yakuza game of course, so the Tojo clan must swing into things. A chairman gets shot, everyone is trading insults and Goro Majima continues to be an extremely handsome man. The usual tangle of families and backdoor schemes that the Tojo clan brings along is then further complicated by the introduction of the honest-to-goodness CIA, who are tracking an international weapons dealer. This leads Kiryu to talk to one of the big politicians. They even bond for a moment. A shame then the man is never brought up again after the act ends.
It’s a shame all around really, because the orphanage side of things sets up some heavy, emotional gut punches. Kiryu is just a sweet man who cannot catch a break, no matter what he does. It’s a shame this part of the plot is wrapped up in so many other threads. It hurts the main antagonist the most. A smart, well-spoken man who had the potential to act as another foil to Kiryu, especially given the key points in his backstory. Instead, he’s shunted to the background until the last quarter of the game, losing out on some key characterisation. His potential is wasted with his ending obvious from ten miles away.
I really want to be able to recommend Yakuza 3 Remastered. It’s a good remaster, if nothing else, with the graphical downgrade from Kiwami 2 not being that noticeable after a while. Unfortunately, it’s far too unfocused. The combat brings along too many frustrations, the side content too often falls into a set formula and the plot tangles things up too much. I’m fond of it, but I can’t say it blew me away. Still, take comfort in the fact that a weak Yakuza game is still head-and-shoulders above many others. Plus the Tiger Drop is still broken as hell. We’ll always have that. Pros - The combat is exciting, with some great heat actions, but... - The side content is nice and varied but... - The plot has a lot of potential but... - Some good new characters (can’t say more though!) - A decent remaster - fair graphics and no performance issues. Cons - ...A lot of the fights are frustrating due to blocking and stunning. - ...the sidestories fall back into some bad habits. - ... it juggles too many plotlines and can’t keep them all up. Yakuza 3 Remastered Developer: Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio Publisher: SEGA Release Date: February 26th 2009 (original), August 20th 2019 (Remastered) Play it on: PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows Played on: Windows

Copycat Rebellion Development Journal #1
Hi, all! This post is the first of hopefully many more I will be writing about my dream of 10 years finally coming true.
This project changed form and evolved so many times in the past 10 years, parallel to my growth as a person. I'm guessing this growth will accelerate even more now that I've finally started to make a real effort to bring it into reality. To chronicle this growth, and my journey with it, I will try to write journals like this. If you have any interest in it, please read them and help me better this project.
This ten-year-old unborn child of mine is a game project. It didn't start as one, but now I am certain that I can only tell this story in a video game format. The gameplay I have in mind can be called a cross between Ace Attorney Investigations and Fire Emblem. The main idea will be to collect "facts" from conversations with people, investigations, and research; and to combine them to gain new options and move the story forward. These options unlocked through investigation and logic will lead you to several different endings. Of course, these are all just plans for now. On the development side of things, I am not that far ahead yet.
Which brings us to the question, what have I done so far? Well, for starters, my development environment is ready. I've also coded about a quarter of my engine. Using an existing game engine would probably accelerate development, but I wanted to write my custom engine both to have more control over the project and to acquire a deeper understanding of game programming. Another reason for this choice is that I want to code the game in Kotlin, a fairly new programming language I've fallen in love with. All Java libraries can also be used in Kotlin, so that still leaves me with some alternatives, but ultimately I think I owe coding this game from scratch to the 10 years I've spent with it.
Getting back on topic, so far I'm done with the input system, very basic prototypes for several screens like the main menu screen, load/save game screens, and such. With what I currently have, I have written some simple games, one being a snake game, the other a bullet hell type game where you dodge incoming particles. For this particular project, I need to implement a Visual Novel style screen, and I think I can write a simple parser to play story scripts I write on special files. If I can automate the parse/show/input loop well, I can handle the VN-style parts with just a couple hundred lines of code. Being able to quickly see the bits of the story I have written will no doubt motivate me to write further.
I will also need to implement a preparation phase screen, and a mission screen. These will all have subscreens like inventory, submenus, and such. So, they will be much more complex. However, building on what I have step by step, I believe I can handle the coding process by myself.
As things progress, however, I think I will need people helping me with other things. More specifically, art and music. Storytelling will also be a beast I might require help with, but slow and steady will probably help me win the race.
For now, I think this is all I have to say. I do not know how frequent these posts will be, but I know there will be more.
Please look forward to Copycat Rebellion.

Part 1
Intro and my history with VNs
I’m going to do a making of set of posts to run through my creative process while making the game. They’ll be tagged #making of and will cover the following topics:
Part 2 - Sprites Part 3 - Script, conversion Part 4 - Script, direction Part 5 - Backgrounds and CGs Part 6 - Misc extra
If there’s anything people would like to see please let me know and I can add it (even if you think it might be covered, those are some very broad categories and I’m sure I’ll miss something). Or feel free to ask further questions.
Now, onto a short history of my experience with visual novels.
I’ve not played a huge amount. There’s been Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator, Swooning Over Stans (a fan-made Gravity Falls dating sim), most of the Ace Attorney series, and most of the Professor Layton series. I’d like to give an honourable mention to Fire Emblem 7, whose cutscenes were masterful and very much in a VN style.
I used Ren’Py, a free visual novel creator. It’s made in python and the basic script-making is really easy. Close Quarters is about as simple as it gets, I used a couple of tricks here and there, but they were all from the in-built tutorial.
I completed an original VN in Ren’Py a few months back: InBetween: Mee’s Adventure, based on a friend’s WIP roleplaying system InBetween. In that one, I wrote the script, drew the backgrounds, and made music, while my friend drew the sprites. I learnt a lot from the experience and a fair bit of the polishing I was able to do on Close Quarters was drawn from that. It actually has choices too!
One of the main things it taught me is how slow a writer I can be, so with that in mind, I sought a pre-written script in order to practise my sprite drawing skills without having to spend months writing a story that I might never finish. I found Close Quarters, which had a compelling narrative and (more importantly for my early sprite-drawing days) very few characters overall.
Normally the first order of business with VNs is making sure you have a good script, as while it may only be a small part of the overall process, it’s the one that can hold up everything else. What characters do you need? What expressions should they have? What settings are they in? These will all be answered once you have your story, so get at least a first draft done first.
Thankfully in my case, I had my story, now I had to work on everything else.

Danny's Random Thoughts #4: Not the Best Start to 2018
I’ve got a lot of things to talk about, so read what’s under the cut if you’re interested.
Alright, this isn't the best way for me to open up 2018. I don't know how many of you have been wondering this but allow me to point it out. So, I haven't been posting much artwork at all this month. Is it because I'm busy? Well, yes I am, and I'll mention that reason later, though the main reason why I haven't been able to do anything is because my old laptop finally kicked the bucket. My old laptop hasn't been too healthy and just recently died from a fried motherboard. Yeah, that was just about the wort thing it could have happened to it. So, since the day I came back from vacation until about a week ago I had no way to draw anything. The worst part is that I was not able to recover all of my files from the old computer, which included just about everything I did from December-January. So everything from my To Do List, to the work files for the YCH I did, to the final 2017 weekly sketches, to the two drawings that I posted at the very beginning of the year? Gone forever. This may not sound like much to you all, but I'm not very happy about losing work that I spent a lot of hours of my life putting a lot of work into. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised, as that laptop was pushing to being six years old. Still, I wish I didn't lose those files forever. Now this isn't all bad news, as I have been able to get a new laptop, and managed to install all of my programs, as well as an upgraded and improved Sketchbook Pro. This means that I'll be able to do some much more dynamic and experimental things to my pieces- different widths to the linework, being able to make my own custom brushes- this did open up a new world of possibilities for me, so I'm happy that something good did come out of this. What will this mean for my productivity? I'm not quite sure as I do have one major obstacle standing in the way of the artwork that I can produce for you guys.
College. Yeah, I'm still in college, though that will hopefully not be the case for much longer. Why is that? Because this is my last quarter and, should everything go according to plan, I'll be graduating on March! That's right, my long and arduous journey on my quest to become a professional animator will be coming to an end in just a mere month and a half. That does mean that I'll be needing to work my ass off to make that dream a reality for the next eight weeks, so my output may still be pretty minimal. I'm saying this mainly for those of you that I still owe commissions to, I'm only asking for a bit more of your patience. I haven't forgotten and, if I did, that's what the Notes and Comments are for. Just remember to be civil about it- I've got a lot of heavy-duty work to do for these next couple of weeks, but once I'm free from all that, that will mean more time I can spend on working on projects for the rest of you all! So very soon I will no longer be just a "student" I'll be a real pro!
I've been trying to play a lot more video games lately, if that hasn't been apparent. I streamed Yooka-Laylee last month, and I've been trying to play more of that game on my own time. That's not all, I've also been playing through my old library of PS1 games including, of course, Crash Bandicoot. I don't have the N. Sane Trilogy, as I'm too broke to own a PS4, so I stuck with the original trilogy. My most proud achievement? I beat them all in the span of nine days. Yes, that includes the super-ultra-duper-tough Crash 1! I won't elaborate on them... at least not here. If you guys would like me to talk about my favorite game series, then maybe I will at a future date. But let me just say, those games do not get old... yes, even as dated as Crash 1 is, I honestly find the challenge to be pretty fair. Alright, mostly fair (Grrr, The High Road, Fumbling in the Dark, Slippery Climb). Now I'm sure you're all pretty familiar with how much I love the series, so that probably won't surprise you all too much. That's not the only trilogy I played during my holiday break, though.
I've gotten into Ace Attorney a LOT recently. I played the Phoenix Wright Trilogy on my 3DS and- yeah, I know I'm pretty late on that boat- they're awesome games. I absolutely love them- the cases are a lot of fun, they can vary from tense, to hilarious, to really, really sad, but they're pretty amazing. I'll just say, I'm definitely a fan now, and I'll be playing through the rest of the series when I can get the chance. So yes, I'll be playing through Apollo Justice pretty soon. Also, just to throw this out there, Maya is incredibly adorable, and they made her even cuter in the anime (yeah, I've been watching that as well- I think that's moved me from being "a fan" to "complete and total trash").
I am going to be writing a new fanfic pretty soon. Some of you may have already picked up on it, but that will be my "buffer project". One of them anyway, as a way to at least have some work done in the periods in which I can't draw anything. Fanfic for what? Oh, you'll see, hehehe...
Timeless. Because of those damn computer issues I haven't been able to capitalize on my own series as much as I would have liked. However, that doesn't mean that I can't do that now- new year, new opportunities, or something like that. Not only that but my NEW challenge for the year will actually involve Timeless! What will it be? You'll find out when the first part of that project gets exposed to you all. I'm pretty sure you all will like it, and I'm looking forward to getting that started as well!
My last bit of news for now is that I'm now on Discord! Not just that, but I've made a large server of my own that will involve a lot of different kinds of news about my own artwork, talks about games, movies, and music, and any other sorts of shenanigans that are par for the course on the BluMoonToons line of work! It's called The BluMoonToons' Official Server, and if you'd like to join I'll leave a link to it right here: https://discord.gg/5uvhVSC
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's all the news I have to share for now! If I've got more then you can expect another journal like this in the near future. So I'll see you all later, and hope that February is a much better month than how January's been treating me!

AA7 Speculation Post: 2021 Edition
So I did one of these back in August, claiming that it was likely we’d get an AA7 announcement sometime in September for the Tokyo Game Show. Obviously it was wrong. So I am doing ANOTHER ONE, because I apparently like publicly being proven wrong?
This will be shorter than the last one because I exhausted most of my material on the first one, and also there’s less material. There is, however, SOME new stuff we’ve learned since August. ... And I was going to make a post in November but completely forgot, so consider this a starting point for the year. I’ll be covering the leaks, in general terms, and theorizing when we will be getting announcements/releases.
The rest will be under the cut so as not to burden everyone with my ramblings.
The Capcom Leaks
First things first, a disclaimer: this information was leaked through a hack which was highly illegal and compromised the personal information of many former and current Capcom employees, and therefore, I do not condone the methods through which this information was obtained and will not provide any guidance as to how to obtain this information, nor have I sought it out myself. However, I will still talk about then in general terms, because the information is out there already, and the information I am discussing will not compromise any personal information.
In summary: early this November, the hacker group Ragnar Locker managed to hack into Capcom’s databases somehow and retrieved 1 TB of information from the company; this includes a bit of information on ace attorney, which was leaked in mid-November after the group demanded a ransom and, presumably, Capcom didn’t pay up.
The two major ace attorney reveals that came from this are as follows: the announcement of a DGS/DGS2 port for the nintendo switch, steam, and ps4 with an English translation, and a calendar for the development and release of this port along with... ace attorney 7.
It’s highly likely that this information was real, given the level detail and the fact that Capcom confirmed some of their information was leaked, essentially confirming that AA7 either is or once was in development -- more news about this than we’ve had in a long time! But what does it mean and when can we expect it? Let’s take a closer look at the calendar.
The Calendar
Unfortunately, this little thing happened in between the creation of this calendar and it being leaked, called “a global pandemic” or something like that, so this calendar is almost certainly behind.
But what did it say? I lost track of the original, but I did find a roughly translated version someone made (from this post which summarizes some of the stuff in the leaks):
Tumblr media
So... what does this mean? First, let’s remember two things: one, this calendar was made pre-COVID and things were definitely pushed back. And two, the Japanese fiscal year starts April 1st, meaning that FY2021 starts in April. This means that as of writing this, we are technically in FY2020 Q4 - where, if we were on track, would be nearing the end of DGS1&2 port production and midway through AA7′s production. (We are almost definitely not on track.)
The pandemic started hitting Japan around April 2020, I believe, so that would be in FY2020 Q1. The DGS ports seem fairly unaffected, considering it’s later in production, and also, the DGS games are already complete, so most of the work would be on translating and adapting the games for modern consoles, rather than starting completely at scratch like AA7. AA7 is a little trickier: it was still in the prototype/pre-production stage, most likely, when the pandemic hit. I’m not tooootally sure what that means because I’m not a game developer, but it’s quite possible that this meant it took a serious hit. Given that there didn’t seem to be a lot of other AA7 data leaked, including in a large schedule of releases for Capcom later, there is the possibility that AA7 ended up being scrapped owing to the pandemic or other extenuating circumstances... but I don’t believe that’s likely, with the 20th anniversary coming up. We’ll see.
Another thing of note is that the name “AA7″ is temporary. Here in the English-speaking world that isn’t a big deal because all the AA games have random titles (like “Justice for All” and “Trials and Tribulations”...) but in Japan, they’re referred to simply with their numbers (GS2, GS3, etc. standing for Gyakuten Saiban 2, Gyakuten Saiban 3). The fact that “Gyakuten Saiban 7″ is a temporary name could possibly mean that what we are getting is not another mainline game.
However, again, there’s not really anything to support either of these things. I’m just bringing up random possibilities to cover my bases; but personally I think it’s likely that it is another mainline game, and that it is still in development. If we hear absolutely nothing about AA7 for all of 2021, though... then perhaps not.
Now... obviously, this calendar was pushed back. If we’re in 2020Q4 right now, then by the calendar DGS1&2 is hypothetically going to be released in about three-six months, and there has been absolutely no word on that so far. If this calendar were still being followed, we’d have AA7 on sale in Q3 of 2021 -- meaning October-December 2021, possibly in October for the 20th anniversary of the series, which would be super cool. ... but I doubt that will happen now.
So then, when are we getting the games?
I haven’t seen actual evidence of it, but rumour is that they’re pushing back DGS1&2 for a July release and an April announcement, giving three months between announcement - release. This is a shorter period than the most recent trilogy switch/ps4/pc/xbox release, which was announced in September 2018 and released February 2019 in Japan, a five month waiting period.
When we English-speaking players will get the duology is unknown, too -- the trilogy rereleases took a month and a half before they were released in English, despite already having been translated and the original released in Japan coming with an English language option. (No idea what was up with that!) The duology released in Japan reportedly will have an English option from the outset, though the English released version will not have the Japanese option because of copyright issues surrounding Sherlock Holmes -- sorry, I mean, Herlock Sholmes. Still, we should expect a few months following the Japanese release before we are able to play it ourselves. Same goes with the hypothetical AA7, which seems to typically be around three months following the Japanese release for an English release.
As for when we can expect AA7′s announcement... to the extent of my knowledge, the shortest announcement-release period for a game was Spirit of Justice, announced in September 2015 and released in Japan in June 2016, a period of nine months. Usually it takes longer. Assuming that there’s still that six-month gap between the DGS duology release and the AA7 release, we could hypothetically have AA7 in early 2022, pushed back a quarter, and if the announcement comes nine months ahead... it lines up pretty nicely with an April announcement. If we’re having a DGS announcement in April as rumoured, it would make sense to tie in the AA7 announcement to that as well.
How will they be announced? ... I’m not sure. TGS back in September would have been the most opportune time for an announcement, but I have the feeling that owing to our good friend the pandemic, they didn’t have enough to show for either the ports or AA7 back then and so opted not to show anything. If these games are for the Switch, they could be announced in a Nintendo Direct. Or they could be announced in a Famitsu magazine with trailers released later outside of any other event. Honestly I don’t really know for this part.
Overall, though? This is the upcoming 20th anniversary of the series. I’d be surprised if we ended up not getting anything. Despite the pandemic likely pushing everything back, I think it’s highly likely we’ll get some big ace attorney news soon, even if it’s not quite in time for the anniversary -- of course, the safety and health of the employees comes first, so a bit of a delay will be just fine.
TL;DR: I’m theorizing we’ll have DGS port/ AA7 announcements around this April, with DGS being released around July and AA7 being released late 2021/early 2022, with a few months delay for the English versions.

Neither of them expected things to escalate as they would when they crossed paths en route to their respective sleeping quarters one afternoon. Both Ms. Cecelia and her compatriot from the East had been up since long before daybreak, he on watch above deck and she shovelling coals in the boiler room below. Ever since his promotion to watch officer, his superiors had been allotting him less and less time off-duty for rest. This suited him, however, as he found he was rarely ever able to get a wink of sleep anyway, regardless of how many hours he was given.
“You must be exhausted from standing in front of those hot furnaces for so long,” he suggested, noting the beads of sweat dotting her hairline and shoving the needless nagging of the faceless voice toward the far reaches of his mind. Stop fooling around with her, it told him, but so what if he did? Seeing as they wouldn’t be landing in Britain for another month and a half, he ought to be allowed a bit of fun, at least, even if it never extended beyond just the surface level.
She replied with merely a mumbled, “Yes,” unable to quell the wild thumping of her heart against her ribcage. Each time she found herself in his company as of late, she would always come out of it with heated cheeks and legs like pudding, so it seemed.
“No doubt you’ve been whiling away the hours until now, when you finally have the time to properly unwind, haven’t you?” The tone of his already naturally low voice, be it intentional or not, was, understatedly, hard to ignore as he stood less than half an arm’s length away from her on account of the narrow passageway. “I know I have.” Fingering the collar of his uniform, he cast a sidelong glance at her through his lashes, catching her staring.
She couldn’t stand it a moment longer. She cleared her throat. “I can’t help but notice that you’ve been behaving rather…suggestively during our chats lately…to put it bluntly.” Her heart pounded as she forced the words out into the open.
“Oh.” A faint crease formed in his brow. Secretly, he’d started to panic. “Does it bother you?”
“No, no, nothing like that,” she assured. His reply certainly wasn’t the sly, flirtatious one she’d been expecting. Quite the opposite, in fact. “It’s just that, if you keep at it, then…” She trailed off, hesitating until his anticipant stare got the better of her. “Let’s just say I might start to think you’re all bark and no bite.”
So that’s how she intended to play this game, was it? His eyes narrowed as he came to a halt beside her. So much for being polite.
Practically picking her up by the collar of her dress, he pulled her in and laid siege to her mouth with his own. She mewled, and he nipped at her lip, hard enough to silence her in an instant. If she wanted bite, he had plenty to give. What kind of a man would he have been to leave her high and dry?
She’d gone all but limp in his arms by the time they parted, both of them breathless to the point of no return. “What say…you take me back to your quarters for the time being?” she sighed, hands flat against his chest. “You have your own now, don’t you?”
He swallowed in response to his mouth having begun to water. “I’d be alright with that.”

She backed him into the door just as soon as it had sealed itself shut behind them. He groaned against her eager lips in mild surprise. Her kiss was far hastier than before, and hungrier too. The heels of his palms had perched themselves upon her hips whereas her hands were all over him, restlessly trailing up and down his body. He didn’t know what to do with himself all of a sudden.
“It’s alright to get a bit rough with me, you know,” she pointed out, giving them both a chance to breathe. “You needn’t be so gentle. Believe it or not, I have actually done this once or twice before.”
In the face of his momentary embarrassment, he grunted his acknowledgment before claiming her lips once again. This time he raked a firm hand across her scalp, making her purr as he used the other to hoist her left leg up along his righthand side. Her skirt gathered at her waist in turn. Now she could all too clearly feel him knocking at her front door. She ground boldly into him through her undershorts, drawing out a thick, extended growl from the depths of his throat, making her grin. Conversely, he let his hand continue on its way, trailing through her hair until it was splaying free down her back. Neither paid any heed to her ribbon hitherto tying it together as it fluttered to the floor by her ankles.
Spurred on by his advances, she started working her way down the buttons of his jacket, anxious to get the main course underway. Once the cumbersome thing had been dealt with, she’d intended to do the same with his shirt, but stopped when his hands came to wrap themselves about her wrists.
“What’s wrong?” He wore no expression as he looked her in the eye, though his uncertainty was apparent in the way his pupils had constricted to the size of pinpricks. “Are we going too fast?” she offered. “Do you want to stop?”
“Oh, n-no. I just…” His gaze flickered down to his collar, where her fingers had frozen in place. “I would like to keep going, but…”
She followed his eyes, an idea of what was bothering him taking shape. “Ah. It’s alright,” she smiled. “I’ll just keep my eyes closed if you think that would help.”
“But—” He tried looking her up and down, only to buckle under the guilt and avert his stare. “Wouldn’t that be a bit unnerving for you?”
“Not at all.” She held his chin between her fingertips, bringing his attention back to her. “I trust you. Completely.”
Not uttering a word in reply, he simply held her gaze there for a while, judging, calculating.
Then, distancing himself from the door slightly, he lifted her right leg off the floor as he had her left.
She reined in a yelp. Her arms flung themselves about his shoulders, eyes shut tight. Her heart was still palpitating even after he’d carried her to the bed and positioned her on his lap in the middle of the mattress. Taking a moment to carefully study his face, committing every detail to memory, she disrobed and closed her eyes again.
He mentally scolded himself for staring, considering how she had so kindly put herself in the vulnerable position of being unable to see whatsoever. Even so, he somehow couldn’t look away. It was just his nerves, he told himself. And yet…
He was overthinking this, surely. He brushed his doubts aside so that he could strip himself down with as little further ado as possible. It would have been unacceptable to let her remain alone not only in her blindness but in nudity as well.
The warmth of their bodies melded together as she sank her front into his. His arms spread out across her bare back almost automatically. His touch enticed a croon to trickle forth from her throat and into his neck. He shivered, feeling the soft scrape of her nails through his roots as she worked the muscle of her tongue gently against his larynx. She could taste him swallowing just then. One of her hands began ghosting along his nape, down his raised shoulder, then his side, finally stopping to hover at his crotch. There was already a trace of dampness left behind from her having been sat there up until now.
She inhaled shakily as she parted her lips to ask, “Shall I—”
“Yes.”
Neither one of them had expected such an impatient response to her unfinished question. “Well, then…” she stammered, oblivious to the vivid redness of his cheeks.
Supporting herself on his shoulder, she lifted herself off his thighs, wrapping her free hand around his rigid length as she aligned herself with the head. Then she started to lower down onto him, bit by bit, until she was, with some difficulty, seated on the cushion of his lap again.
He released the breath he’d apparently been withholding. Naturally he’d known she would be soft, wet, hot, and tight on the inside—this wasn’t the first time he’d ever thought about it, after all—but he could never have anticipated the feeling of being fully engulfed by her to be so obscenely euphoric. Especially when comparing it with that of his own clammy, covetous hands.
When she began to languidly move up and down his length after a few moments’ hesitation, the sensation briefly caused his eyes to close of their own accord. She kept clinging to his shoulders, feeling him growing and hardening even still. There was so much of him, throbbing deep inside her, that she was admittedly struggling to take all of him in at once. Maybe she simply hadn’t done this in a while. In any case, with the way his fingers dug into her flank as his tip caressed the deepest of her crevices again and again, she couldn’t bare to back down now.
By the time she’d settled into a somewhat steady rhythm, she was impressed with herself for still having managed to keep her eyes closed up until now. But that streak very nearly reached a premature conclusion when, without warning, he grasped the back of her neck and dove in to join his lips with hers.
The sounds generated by each fervid stroke of his tongue as he devoured her had her clenching around him harder and harder. It wasn’t fierce as before, but neither was it laid back or inattentive. Just passionate, in the purest and simplest sense.
Why hadn’t he just kissed her like this from the outset? He was so good at it. His adeptness was such that she had no doubt he possessed more than a little experience, even if he had no memory of it. Perhaps ‘adeptness’ wasn’t quite the right term, however. It wasn’t as if his skill were what had her melting in his mouth. Rather it was the fluidity, intrepidity, and complete lack of restraint in his movements. He’d gone into it with bated breath, but before long, he was panting nearly as hard as she and losing more and more of his inhibitions as each second ticked by. If he’d shown any hint of this demeanour before, it had been either far more subdued or just forced. Whatever the reason, she much preferred this version of the man.
Their kiss was cut off when his head made contact with the pillow. His restless hands reached below her faintly trembling thighs. Her eyes remained closed, despite the insurmountable instinct to open them that came over her as he then started to drive himself into her from below. She choked back a whine of rhapsody. It didn’t take long from there for her to begin meeting his thrusts, one after the other, both of them fighting the urge to moan as each breath came out more heavy and clipped than the last.
“I want to say your name so badly,” she confessed, words more aspirated than voiced. “If only I knew it, I’d be saying it over and over…until you were sick of hearing it.”
“Cecelia-san…” He didn’t tell her how wrong she was to think he could ever tire of such a thing, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t thinking it.
As with everything, she must have gotten a bit carried away because the next thing she knew, she was teetering forward. Before she could reach out and catch herself, she’d already lost her balance, falling flat on top of him and face-planting into his chest.
Her face, squished, was soon flooded with the heat of a hundred suns. She groaned pitifully, raising her head and hiding behind her palm. But when she did, she roused from within him a bout of full-breasted chuckles. She’d never heard a laugh so infectious as his in all her life. She only wished she could see that unforgettable smile of his that typically accompanied it. “Not even enough strength left to stay upright, hm?” he teased sweetly, exacerbating her blush. “Are you alright?” She nodded, not quite having regained confidence enough to speak yet. Cute. An arm slinked about the small of her back. He leaned up toward her ear. “Here,” he exhaled, deep and deliberate as he took either of her arms and draped them about his neck. “Allow me.”
In one swift manoeuvre, he scooped her up and flipped her over so that she lay face-up amongst the sheets. Somehow he’d remained fully submerged in her heat even then. In fact his hips had already resumed their thrusts even before her landing.
In no time at all, he was picking up the pace. She held on tight, mouth clamped around her hand in an effort to counteract the need to scream. Meanwhile he watched and revelled in every little thing she did. For one, as she adjusted to the new tempo he was setting, she would cautiously start to ease her hand away, though a few odd strings of salivation kept it and her lips connected. The image would have him straining inside her, which only made her want to cry out again. It was a never-ending cycle. The harder she tried not to make a sound, the harder he made it for her. And he wasn’t even trying.
Like a bolt from the blue, he rolled his hips in a way that made sparks fly behind her eyelids.
Her head rolled back at the electrifying sensation that rippled through her, as did his, his pace dwindling to nothing. Both went still, all but for their ragged gasps and pants, as they reeled. The way he was looking at her, eyes black and hazy as if he’d been blinded by the feeling, only added to her own lightheadedness.
When she realised the transgression she was committing, she clamped a hand over her perverse eyes. “I-I’m sorry,” she bleated.
A hoarse, “No…” was all he said, leaving her lost for words as he gently and tentatively pried her fingers away from her eyes. They skittishly flitted about, until he brushed a hand up along the slope of her neck as if to say, “Please look at me.” And, apprehensive as she was, she granted his unspoken request.
Just like that, with each locked in the other’s breathtaking gaze, he began to move again.
She was too focused on him to think about repressing the little whimper that emerged from her gaping mouth. She could see it all—the fluctuant tension in his core as he kept himself suspended above her, his slick length disappearing between her shuddering, outstretched legs again and again, and most of all his eyes, steadfastly fixed on her and swimming with utterly transparent bliss. How many times had she dreamt of seeing such an expression upon his face? And for him to willingly allow her to see him like this… It made her insides glow with an emotion that she couldn’t even attempt to describe. “It’s so good…” she squeaked out, speech muffled by the back of her hand. “You f…eel so good…!” She could almost start crying, it seemed.
“I know…” His breath hitched again, her calves constricting desperately around his exposed waist. Then his jaw fell open in a near silent wail as she clenched down on him yet again. He bit his trembling lip. His head was swirling and his heart was thundering out of control. It felt as if he were on the verge of drowning, only he had no desire to come up for air. “Y-You do, too.” How was it that merely her looking at him was so terrifying and yet so overwhelmingly intoxicating?
As he continued to grind his tip into her core without discretion, it wasn’t long before both of them were suddenly barrelling toward the brink.
Her whole body tensed. Her hands seized the sheets with abandon. He opened his mouth, a question on the edge of his tongue, when she cut him off with a fervid nod of the head. Then he started quickening his pace like a madman, each thrust of less precision than the last.
Finally the sparks swelled into a surge of fireworks, and she cried, “Kiss me!”
He dove in, clutching her head in his arms. Her own, along with her legs, clung to his rounded back with every shivering ounce of strength she had left. Her body arched into his. Still chasing his own high, he greedily swallowed every last breathless mewl that spilled into his mouth.
Soon enough, the feeling of her coming undone around him had him tumbling over the brink at long last. Their lips yet sealed together, he was barely able to make it out of her in time what with her limbs holding him in place for dear life. He let a guttural moan or two slip out and back down her throat again, losing what little control he’d retained. No longer did he feel as if to be drowning. What he felt now was more akin to the feeling of floating above air.
His hand, shaking almost imperceptibly from the waning rush of orgasm, combed back the hair in his face whilst he sat back to catch his breath. She stared blankly with stars in her eyes, chest heaving and mouth wide open. It seemed most of his mess had landed in the sheets off to the side of her, which meant clean-up wasn’t immediately imperative. He breathed a sigh of relief.
Listlessly did her eyes wander until they came upon the pocket watch he’d purchased in India sitting open on his dresser. “Oh. Bollocks… Is that really the time?” In her fatigue, she slowly but surely brought herself to sitting. “I had better be on my way, I think.”
“No, wait.”
His arms had snatched her up by the waist, just when she’d been about to rise to her feet. His front moulded with the curvature of her back, skin varnished with a light layer of sweat and clinging to hers.
“Please…stay with me.”
She’d been counting up her numerous undergarments left strewn across the floor, intent on donning them and her outerwear before promptly taking her leave of him. But the way he’d whispered that uncharacteristically soft request into her nape, fastening himself about her bare midriff as he’d done so, took the place of her forsaken clothing as the sole occupant of her thoughts in an instant. She couldn’t possibly leave now, could she?
“I suppose…one of my bunk mates should be able to cover for me, when my time is up.” She was fairly confident in her remembering that at least one of them was due to rise at the same time as she in the small hours of that morning. “Alright, then.”
Her compliance made him soften around her. He exhaled with a hum that was barely there, bringing her down with him and sinking into the mattress.

He awoke just a few hours later, when the sun still had yet to rise from its sparkling sea bed, a glimpse of which was visible through the little round window outfitting his quarters. He opened his eyes when his shifting hand brushed up against the bare warmth of another lying beside him.
He withheld a stunned breath. There she was. Dozing peacefully, with lips gently parted and cheek pressed into the pillow. Even in sleep, she was a tease, her hip jutted out and the blanket doing little to hide her curves. In truth, his first instinct was to think he was still dreaming, or perhaps that he was merely seeing things that weren’t there again. He shook his head. It was all too surreal. On top of his being able to fall asleep at all, the fact that the voice in his head had inexplicably gone all but silent only made everything even harder to accept as reality.
In this rare moment of stillness, the way she lay beside him in an even more vulnerable state than his own had him flushed from head to toe. There was nothing stopping him from simply acting upon his whims, whatever they may have been. He could all too vividly imagine what it would be like to tilt his head and lean in, aligning his lips with her own just so. Then he noticed the little patch of dampness where the pillowcase and the corner of her mouth met. If it didn’t remind him of their mutually lewd and heedless conduct those few hours ago, he would’ve laughed at the indignity of the scene before him. He wondered whether the rhythm of his heart would ever return to normal at this rate.
“You…” he began aloud in his native tongue. He hadn’t meant to speak out so obstreperously; when the sounds slipped out, he reflexively bit his lip. But as the thought was left unfinished, he couldn’t help but feel dissatisfaction setting in. He lowered his voice as he began again. “You have no idea how…extraordinary you are. Have you?”
She responded with nothing but the same slow, almost silent breaths. Of course she did. She was completely and blissfully unaware of every word to leave his mouth.
“You know,” he ventured further, “I couldn’t say for certain, obviously, but…” A whisper of a smile found its way onto his face as he traced each contour of hers with his eyes. “I…get the sense that…well, that no one has ever made me feel this way but you.”
Some part of him had known that the longer he beheld her slumbering form, sooner or later, his focus would drift to her lips once again. Those irresistibly saccharine lips, glistening like dewdrops on petals in the early morning light. His chest ached at the sight of them. That evening he’d only kissed her hotly and heavily and with a suffocating intensity, having been wholly caught up in the throes of it all. The idea of trying again, this time with a touch more care and tenderness, refused to let him be.
He swallowed the lump in his throat. He’d already pushed his luck this far by speaking aloud at length. Surely there wasn’t that great a risk to be taken if he decided to go a little further. Anyway, he thought, it’s only a dream.
He held his breath, moving as slowly and deliberately as humanly possible. With her lying on her side as she was, finding the optimal position to support himself with his arm was proving to be more of a challenge than he’d initially estimated. Finally he settled for simply lying back down on his side as it seemed the safest course of action. But when he did, the bed creaked, loudly. He froze. His heart was galloping away at full speed, but it seemed she was still fast asleep. Good. Never taking his eyes off of her, he started to ever so gradually close the gap.
Their lips were less than a centimetre away from touching—they were so close, he could feel the warmth of her breath on his face—when out of the blue, she stirred.
It wasn’t a dream. It wasn’t even a hallucination.
Blearily Cecelia blinked the remnants of sleep from her eyes. When her vision was restored, she could barely make out the face of the very man she’d just been dreaming about on account of the extremely close distance.
The split second she’d managed to identify his jagged locks and permanent knit in his brow, he shot up. She twisted to face him as he hovered directly above her, eyes like dinner plates and complexion much like that of the camellia blossom. She too turned a similar shade of red when the myriad of reasons for his evident mortification started sinking in one by one.
He whipped his body around toward the door, like he’d heard someone out in the corridor, though she hadn’t heard so much as a single footfall. “Forgive me,” he stuttered, avoiding her gaze and shrinking into himself. “I-I…”
“Hey, it’s okay,” she soothed. “Look at me.” But when she tried to remove his hand from his face, he deflected her reach.
No sooner than he had, he rose from the bed, coming within a hair’s breadth of losing his balance in the process. He steadied himself, retrieved his uniform off the floor, and threw it on as quickly as possible. With his cap crooked on his head and nearly every button of his jacket in the wrong hole, he hauled the door open and carelessly let it slam behind him. The only two words to pass his lips just before then had constituted the simple phrase, “I’m sorry.”
In truth, she’d gotten used to his rushed exits long ago. At this point, she was just grateful for the time she got to spend with him, regardless of how or when it ended. Now she only hoped he would be alright without his watch, which he’d left forgotten on the dresser.
