Today’s replies! We’re covering a lot of topics today: some are related to our posts from this week so far, then there is one about Scott Pilgrim Takes off, and one about the Shingeki no Kyojin fanart. Let’s start with the latter one.

I remember a few years ago you were drawing a lot of snk related stuff. Do you think that you are making a comeback sometime? I feel like the fandom is much more calmer now.

Ohh that was such a long time ago and it was such fun time… well, a lot of it was stressful as hell because of the fandom and the shipwars and the non-shipping crowd who are quick to shit on artists who draw niche things; but to be honest, this isn’t the only reason why we stopped posting snk fanart. The main reason was that we were getting burnt out and wanted to consume some new media, and it’s nothing unusual or bad: it happens all the time. We dive deep into the title, have a lot of ideas, create AUs, draw and post stuff, and then after some time we move on. There are some titles that we revisit every other year or so, without diving too deep into them, and sometimes we just randomly remember about the characters and get the urge to draw something with them (we’ve done a couple of Zevi sketches even after technically stopping posting snk, as you might’ve seen).

With SnK, even though it’s been quite a few years already, I think it’s still kind of fresh in our minds, so we don’t have anything new to say with our posts or my art…yet. So I can’t really predict when we’ll come back, but you know what they say; a criminal always returns to the scene of the crime lol We love Shingeki very much, so even if it takes a long time, it’s inevitable.

Also, we are very grateful to have people who remember our stuff from back then and even wait for us, I am honestly surprised by it... So thank you so much for asking <3

Which one of the Scott Pilgrim girls do you like? And other than Todd and Wallace, which other male character do you like?

My absolute favourite is probably Julie, and it’s partially because I have the Aubrey Plaza Bias, but I also really liked what they did with her character in the anime. She has the best faces, she’s so animated and so evil. I would love the second season (that we won’t get) simply to look at her more lol

I am also super weak for Kim, she and Julie both are my “best girls”. Kim’s personality just perfectly fits the type of character that I usually like, and I really like the bitter-sweetness that comes with it.

Speaking of the anime specifically, I also really like what they did with Ramona and Roxie. Their relationship didn’t get much depth in the movie (for obvious reasons, they didn’t have time to dive deeply into any relationship), and it was very delightful to see them work through what happened between them… in a way, I guess. Plus, Roxie is an idiot and that’s awesome lol

Ep3 was too much for me in general, all the girls’ interactions were very good + oh my god Hollie’s hot.

Now for the guys… Oh, Gideon, absolutely, he is great. He is such a highlight of the movie, we adore him a lot. So it was interesting to see his trajectory in the anime, and I am very happy that he is just… naturally evil and controlling fuck lol

Matthew was very enjoyable in the anime and I’m glad he got more attention, Lucas was animated very nicely and had a couple of very funny lines. I also think I developed a soft spot for Stephen at some point lol

Yeah I’m 100% sure that Neige fell for Vil back then. Not only Vil was so cool and professional and mature, but he was also so so so pretty. Even if their characters weren’t supposed to fall in love and Neige’s character was supposed to be bullied by Vil’s character, Neige just couldn’t stop thinking about how pretty Vil is. And not a single person noticed… That’s why he’s a great actor lol

Oh good question! Other than Trey/Riddle and Azul/Idia, the first couple that comes to mind is Rook/Vil, who pretty much already feel like a couple that’s been together for quite some time. Their household situation would probably be complicated, but in general they’re each other’s partners for life I think.

I would also say ADeuce but they’re the type of couple who is always together but just can’t settle down because of some stupid reasons. Jack might steal Deuce from Ace and settle down with him lol Who else… Kalim and Jamil are stuck together, they don’t count lol

SNK 137 Review

I can't unsee it.

Ok, I know I’ve been absent the past two chapters. I’ll get to why and what I thought of 135 and 136 in this post, but for now…jeez, this chapter.

It was badass and dumb and sometimes both at the same time.

Where do I even start?

Ok, then.

I actually really like Zeke’s character. He is unironically my second favorite out of the cast.

When we first see Zeke, he’s in his beast titan form. He’s lumbering, hulking, unsettling.

He’s a titan that can talk. He’s a titan that can control other titans!

And he wiped out humanity’s second strongest with ease. I forget his name. It was Mickey, right?

Worst than that, actually. He ordered his titans to kill Mickey with all the gravitas of ordering a side of fries at McDonald’s.

Iirc fans were wondering if this new character would be the main villain of the series.

He went on to wipe out the Survey Corps at Shighanshina, and after that we learned he singlehandedly foiled his parent’s right-wing conspiracy when he was a kid.

Zeke was a mastermind who shouldn’t be taken lightly…right?

Welp, the more we saw of Zeke, the more obvious it became that he wasn’t actually all the impressive.

He wasn’t very good at being a warrior. Honestly, it seems most of his high marks comes from his unique royal blood powers, and the good will be built with Marley when he turned in his parents. TFW cronyism.

He foiled the restorationists plot, but really he was just an abused kid who wanted to get away from his parents.

He killed Mickey, but Zeke was a King Kong sized titan and Mickey was caught off guard and unarmed, so…yeah, ofc he won that fight.

Zeke has royal blood powers, but that doesn’t say anything about his intellectual prowess or anything.

The Survey Corps was wiped out at Shighanshina, but the circumstances of that fight strongly favored him. The Survey Corps were trapped in the city, so all Zeke had to do to win was sit on his ass and do nothing.

And he almost died anyway.

Levi got the drop on him because of his own incompetence. He let himself get distracted, which created the opening for Levi to strike.

Throw in his gullibleness towards Eren, his bumbling demeanor, and his totally emo philosophy, and the true nature of Zeke Jeager became undeniable: this guy is a fucking moron.

Like.

A real fucking moron.

And that’s why his character is unironically so great!

Zeke’s character is such a brilliant subversion of audience expectations.

We were all made to believe that this guy was a Big Fucking Deal through what turned out to mostly be circumstantial reasons.

In reality, he’s an idiot who’s been failing upwards his whole life.

Zeke got as far as he did because he’s really lucky. That’s all he has going for him.

I liked the more fleshed out version of his world view we got here. It is appropriately emo.

My read on Zeke has always been that if he existed in real life he’d be an extremely online philosophy bro, so seeing his outlook on life being effectively copy pasted from 4chan was just delightful.

Zeke is 2deep4(chan)u.

Life exists to multiply. All actions are explained by this singular drive. As such, life is hollow and we’re better off dead.

Imagine that is how you see the world.

Life sucks. It’s an existence of suffering driven by a desire to ensure more people are brought into this world so that they can toil away ensuring that yet more people are brought into this world to toil away ensuring people are brought into this world.

On and on and on and on.

To Zeke, this is the cycle of violence.

Not war which begets war which begets war, but rather life itself.

One suffering existence that begets another suffering existence that begets yet another suffering existence.

That is the context from which the euthanasia plan came from: it was an extension of this broader world view.

Everyone gets a dose of pain in this world, but Eldians especially get shafted. If anyone deserved release from this nihilistic existence that is “being alive,” it’s them.

Hence, Zeke’s plan to sterilize Eldians so they can die out peaceably.

…

It’s hilarious how easily Zeke is disabused of this notion.

I’m not sure if it works from a storytelling perspective, but it tracks perfectly with what usually happens when emo philosophy bros like Zeke have their beliefs challenged.

The emo bro will go on a self-absorbed rant about how nihilistic life is. For sake of example, let’s say the reason is because morality is just an opinion and nothing is objectively wrong.

The n the guy he’s ranting to will drop a critique on the bro so devastating that they’re left speechless:

“What about murder? Isn’t murder objectively wrong?”

Emo bro: -surprised pikachu face-

I swear to God this happens a lot. I don’t know if transplanting that into this pivotal storytelling moment works, but I sure as hell enjoyed it.

But, yeah, while we’re talking about philosophies, let’s look at some others.

Armin thinks there is beauty in pointless moments. Moments that are meaningful only for the people who partake in them. They’re an expression of the love they have for each other. Those moments are worth cherishing and protecting.

He’s right, but you know who also thinks that way?

Eren does.

Superficially, anyway.

When Eren starts rumbling the world, he thinks of his friends and the fun they’ve had together. He’s doing it for them.

Of course, he’s hurt them instead, but that’s still his logic, however deranged it may be.

What separates Armin from Eren is their sense of boundaries.

There are places that Eren is willing to push on towards that Armin is not.

For that, Eren thinks Armin is weak. All Eren had to say to him when they spoke at the restaurant was how useless Armin was.

Armin can’t go the distance. He can’t do what’s necessary. He takes options off the table too easily. He wanted to negotiate instead of seeing the truth that war was inevitable.

To Eren, that’s weakness.

In reality, it’s empathy.

Armin cares about people. Even people who hate him.

Eren doesn’t. If you’re his enemy, you’re dead to him, period.

Eren has no soul.

He may have slept under his enemy’s roof, ate his enemy’s food, and saw the good in them for himself, but he’s still killing them.

I don’t care if he’s crying on the inside. I don’t care how many times he said he’s sorry to Ramzi.

That actually makes it worse.

Eren made the calculation, the conscientious decision, that the lives of billions of people across multiple civilizations were worth less than that of his race.

Not even his whole race; just the subset of his race he was most familiar with!

Eren and Armin represent two widely similar, yet subtly different philosophies.

For Eren, the world is beautiful, but you have to do cruel things to protect that beauty.

The world is cruel because it is beautiful.

For Armin, the world is beautiful, but it is plagued by cruelty.

The world is cruel, but also beautiful.

SNK made the right choice. Armin was rightly depicted as the superior worldview.

(I have some gripes about how endemic the series seems to think cruelty is to the world, but we’re ignoring that now.)

Ymir is more of a wild card than I thought she’d be.

It seemed straightforward.

Ymir had been beaten and enslaved her whole life, so when Eren offered her freedom and treated her life a human, she sided with him.

That still looks to be what happened, but it seemed like Ymir also genuinely wanted to destroy the world with Eren.

The world treated her with cruelty, so of course she’d want to burn it all. Makes sense, right?

But Ymir, it turns out, is a lot more complicated than that.

She was beaten, enslaved, raped, hunted like an animal, and after all that, she still believed in this world.

She saw two lovers together, and that embodied what made the world worth getting attached to.

Those two lovers were her conquerors. Her oppressors.

She saw the love between two of her slavers, and instead of resentment or jealousy, she simply knew it was beautiful.

If people threaten his freedom, Eren wishes death upon them.

When Ymir is literally enslaved by them, she still acknowledges the beauty of their romance.

It’s a cool layer of complexity to add to their dynamic. They’ve been through similar shit, but they couldn’t be more dissimilar.

My guess is that Ymir is sympathetic to Armin and everyone came back to life through her help.

I know Armin Zeke the credit for that, but…that makes no sense?

Eren defeated Zeke when Ymir sided with him and he started the rumbling.

Eren, via Ymir, is in control, not Zeke, so it makes no sense for Zeke to be able to do any of this.

The only explanation is that Ymir broke from Eren and now Zeke is her new best friend.

…Yeah, this is the part where I talk about the bad stuff with this chapter.

The exact mechanics of how all of this went down is very underexplained.

Zeke being able to reveal himself like he did can be chalked up to Ymir’s power, but if it’s true this was purely Zeke’s doing, then…how?

How was Zee able to do that if Eren is in control? Why would Eren even put Zeke there instead of encasing him in crystal and keeping him physically close by?

This whole final battle has been very underwhelming for me, which is why I didn’t do a review for the last two chapters.

The premise is pretty bland.

The Alliance’s main opposition in this fight are mindless drones. The titans they’re fighting have no humans inside them, they’re just puppets. NPCs.

What drama there has been here has been the same fucking crap we’ve been dealing with for the past few volumes.

Yes, Mikasa, Eren has to die.

I know this is hard for her, but my patience has run out.

Eren told her to her face that they had to kill him if they wanted to win, and then when the Alliance is riding on Falco’s back, they make the final call to kill Eren and this is the face Mikasa makes.

Like this is the first time she’s heard it.

This is the face you’d expect from a child, not a grown ass adult.

That was the moment I became convinced Mikasa would probably die in this fight.

Her head is too far up her ass as this point.

She is utterly incapable of processing the obvious fact that Eren hates her.

Yes, he’s theoretically destroying the world partly for her, but he’s also deranged and too self-absorbed to see that he’s hurt her. He has no real regard for her.

It is beyond annoying that there has been almost zero progression for her character on this issue.

If by this point in the story, she had accepted that Eren had to die, but was still visibly coping with that, then all would be well.

What’s frustrating is that just when it seems like we’ve progressed past that stage, we learn we haven’t.

I also feel that a lot of the major beats of the fight were pointless.

A major point in the battle comes when Armin gets eaten by the Okapi titan, and Mikasa, Annie, and the rest have to rescue him. But Armin didn’t seem to be in any danger of dying, and him being sent to P A T H S was actually a good thing in the end because he was able to win over Zeke.

The whole deal with the explosives around Eren’s neck was also pretty badly handled.

You’d think the hard part would be getting the explosives to the neck and securing them to it, but nope. Pieck took care of that in a couple of panels, and the real meat of the fight is doing the very last thing they need to do to win.

It’s very tedious and contrived.

Instead of a fight that’s interesting because they have to wrestle their way through titans while carrying the bombs, we get a totally generic fight because the story breezed through the hard part and all they have to do now is push a single button to win.

But in the end that entire sequence was pointless because Armin decides to blow everything up anyway.

Jean’s shining moment?

A total waste.

Reiner’s shining moment...wrangling that worm thing?

Also a total waste.

Armin was going to blow it up anyway. There is no way you can say that Eren would have survived Armin’s explosion but for Reiner and Jean’s efforts.

It just defies all common sense.

So yeah, this whole battle was a pretty lackluster climax.

Looking to the future, I think this is it.

There’s only two chapters left, so we need to start wrapping up. My guess is Eren’s likely dead and next chapter starts the epilogue.

Tally-ho.

Now I’m afraid my name might be brought up though. I did some shitty things with her when we were friends. It’s been five to almost seven years (five since the last time I spoke to her and almost seven since I met her). I was 17-18 in the time I knew her and I’m very easily influenced by the people around me, but I’m ultimately responsible for my actions. I saw another ex-friend of hers brought up (not by name) and now I’m kind of scared.

I’m gonna be a little vague and my memory isn’t the best (I try to block things out as a defense mechanism), but I’m going to try to recount it, just for my own benefit. I’m not even going to name her, but will refer to her as LR. I don’t think anyone cares tbh lmao

I met her in 2014. It was probably February or March, so I was 17. We were both cosplaying Attack on Titan, very big at the time. Someone posted in a con Facebook group that they made a cosplay group for the area/con for Attack on Titan. I only had my jeans, shirt, jacket (that I made), wig, and glasses for Hanji at that time and I posted a picture, “I’m not too confident in how I look, but here’s my cosplay.” and she commented that it was a good cosplay. We went from there, started chatting, and made plans to meet at the con. She was 19 at the time, of it really matters, but we were still age appropriate friends.

The con comes by. I didn’t wear Attack on Titan the first day, felt kind of left out when we started meeting other people from the group. She’s always been a social butterfly (I think it’s an attention thing more than she actually enjoys it tbh, but I might be biased??) and I’ve been really shy about approaching people after being bullied in middle school. The next two days I wore my unfinished SNK cosplay, didn’t have the belts, but had a fun time.

She ran a panel and promised that I could be Hanji in it and let someone else be Hanji as well, and this person got more attention because she was more outgoing, which kind of bummed me out, but at 17, I was a very jealous cosplayer and would get jealous about people cosplaying the same thing as me. Not a healthy mindset, but it is what it is and you grow from it.

She had told me she was in pre-med (I’m going to remind you she’s 19 at this point, not unusual but it’s what she tells me next which is the questionable part) and that she’s going to start on the medical stuff the next year. I’m 17 and naive and don’t question it. I know now pre-med takes four years. This is an example of her lying to me/holding things in.

We continued being friends with the SNK group, had meetups at a local park, and whatever. She lamented to me about not being able to go to Colossalcon because she couldn’t afford it or something and my parents pay for cons, so I talked them into letting her stay with us. I had started cosplaying Ymir to her Christa and I did have a cry privately to LR when another girl cosplayed Ymir to another girl’s Christa because the other Christa felt left out by me being LR’s Ymir. I felt jealous they got more attention, again, not a healthy mindset, but I was 17 and convinced I was going to be a professional cosplayer. I know now it’s a bad mindset. LR took my meltdown the wrong way, which I’ll get to later.

It wasn’t long after, maybe a couple months. She had stopped hanging out with the friend I had met her with at the con, which I realize now is kind of sus, but I didn’t think anything of it at the time. But anyway, a couple months later at most, she makes a post in the Facebook group that she’s been feeling left out of the SNK group. A few people from it got together to talk about it, she finds out, and I get pissed. I make a big post in the group about how they’re purposely leaving her out. I’m loyal to a fault, and sometimes it blinds me. It splits the group, they still keep together, but LR and I separate from them.

We move on to different series and start doing cosplay photos. It’s something I wanted to do for a while. She’s a little hesitant, but I hype it up and she eventually gets into it. At Otakon, she asks mentions if I’d be okay with her cosplaying Juvia (a big comfort character of mine, and one I’d failed to finish a cosplay of that con, but I’d gotten Levy done, which still worked with her Lucy) and I’m thrown off guard. I tell her no lmao. I mean really though, what would I do? But it’s important later.

I have big plans. I don’t always finish my big plans. I want to do a ton of different cosplays and she feeds into me. She finishes things while I normally don’t. I realize I shouldn’t have agreed to do so many, but also, the one’s she made aren’t unwearable? She can cosplay without me matching? But it’s something she internalizes.

We book lots of shoots. It’s fun! We don’t get the most expensive photographers (we’re 18 and 20 at the time) but it’s fun. There’s a particular photographer I wanted to work with and she books her since she’s dealing with it at this point since I have a lot of anxiety talking to people. By the time the con rolls around, my costume didn’t work out the way I wanted and my skirt is held up with safety pins. It shows in the photos, so does her back acne. She goes on a tangent on her Facebook cosplay page about how unprofessional the photographer is, how she doesn’t edit photos for anyone but her friends. I, unfortunately, share it. At that time, neither of us have a big following (I still don’t, she doesn’t really either, only 3,700 after she remade, but did have almost 10k at one point), so it doesn’t go far. The photographer and friends stick up for the photographer and it doesn’t go anywhere luckily.

I’m falling deeper into depression at this point. I’m not finishing projects I’m supposed to do with her, messages are spotty on my end. We still do a couple of cons together. The next con of the first we met at comes around, I don’t have anything done, I’m mortified. I skip a whole day. It’s in driving distance so it’s not like I was wasting a whole hotel day. She gets photos solo. It seems fine.

She messages me one day that her parents kicked her out. Something about a fight over her mom saying minimum wage workers don’t work as hard and LR snapping back. Her parents were really nice the couple of times I met them, which isn’t always indicative of how someone really is, but now I feel in my gut that there had to be something more. It feels like petty reason. She moves into her grandparents (and further selfies match that, so it seems like it had to be bad if she never went back). She messages me this and I’m thrown so off guard. Yeah, we called each other best friends. We didn’t talk to many other people as far as I knew at that point, but I had no idea what to say. It’s bad on my part, but I didn’t answer her for a week.

She didn’t message me or anything, didn’t delete me off Facebook, but vague posted me there about being there for people when they won’t be there for you, and people were hyping her up. I realized it might’ve been about me. I called her crying, terrified. Sent her messages. I don’t exactly remember what transpired, but did make up.

There was a point she told me she was dropping pre-med to become an accountant because it took a year and she wanted to focus on cosplay. Again, stupid 18yo me believed that that made sense and was like, “Oh okay!”

We went to a couple more cons, I’m pretty sure she was using me. We make plans for Youmacon, but I don’t message her for like a week in September of 2015. She asks if I’m okay (the only time) I tell her I’m doing really bad. We don’t talk until close to the con. I admit to her that I was thinking of admitting myself to the psych ward it was that bad, but though I didn’t tell her that, it’s ultimately a very hard, very personal choice. (I made it in May and it’s not an easy choice.) She tears me a new one, saying I should’ve went, that I was using her for companionship. She said she had plans to go to another con?? So the way I see it, she cared more about going to a con than anything else. She never checked in on me after I told her I was doing bad, just to take my time.

She has a new bff at this point. This is going to be so cruel, but her new friend isn’t as put together, which is fine! Cosplay is for fun! But I mention this because they get photos together. After my obsession with becoming a professional cosplayer, LR got into that mindset too. I’m so fucking sure that she used this other girl in photos to look better next to. The difference is so obvious in photos.

I make a cosplay that LR cosplayed when we were friends. I’m so proud. I haven’t finished anything in months. I cosplay a couple of things she did, but we were friends at one point, we like the same series, and there are a lot of big series. It’s bound to happen.

She vagues me on Instagram. She continues to stalk me on there (and I did her, not proud of it, but I’ll admit it). She posts things about how an ex friend had a breakdown over her having other friends (when I confided in her my jealousy over the Ymir/Christa duo), how I wouldn’t let her cosplay Juvia lmao (this still gets me. What would I do? Break your arm? You asked me on the spot and I was uncomfortable.). There was one Juvia cosplay post that I mentioned I had lost weight because while my uncle was dying, I wasn’t eating. I was helping with cleaning his house and I just wasn’t fucking eating. She took that as a jab about her because she has self image issues. There was also a big post she made how she KNEW I was cosplaying all the same things as her to make her jealous and to make her insecure, mentioning me by name even. I reported it and it got taken down.

I’d heard things through the grapevine. How she started shit in the Fate community and she was afraid of being beat up at Katsucon’s public photoshoot. How she tried to make a Love Live group, but when two girls couldn’t afford it and they would no longer have all nine, she threw a fit and cancelled the whole group. I’d also heard about her making a fuss over photos she got back when a cosplayer’s grandparent was dying. I stayed away after like a year, but a couple of people who knew me that knew I was friends with her would tell me things.

I wasn’t the best person, either. I’ll take responsibility for that. I wish I could apologize to the people I hurt while friends with her, but I no longer remember their names. I was a dumb teenager. I still get swept up in the people around me and get carried away when the people I are about are hurt. Maybe it’s something I need to work on. But, I ultimately don’t think she’s grown. I don’t think she’s gotten better. I think she’s only gotten worse over the year.

I’m not proofreading. There might be more, but it was a lot to go through, but I wanted to get it out. I hope the read more works, but I’m gonna throw on a long post warning too. If you read this, thank you, by the way. I just felt like I had to get it out.

The final episode of the first half of S3 was another banger with positive reactions. Compared to earlier in the season when manga readers seemed more dissatisfied with the adaptation, we are happy to see that the final episodes of the arc turned out to be a much more positive experience!

Considering this episode was essentially just the calm before the storm, I was pleasantly entertained by it. Not the best episode because not a whole lot happened, but still it did what it needed to do.

I was super worried they would change something in this episode but thank Ymir-sama it's okay.

IT WAS AWESOME AND THAT ENDING IS ONE OF THE BEST THING THIS ANIME HAS EVER MADE!

This episode was so good! And funny! And angsty at the end! All the ingredients that make a good AOT episode

Very good, the preview was spooky and the whole episode had humor to lighten the mood, some emotional stuff and High Anxiety Cliffhangers to finish us off. Its gonna be a long 6 months.

It was a really good episode. It followed manga perfectly. Every ep. of Uprising should has been like that. Too bad it wasn't, that why I rated the whole series pretty lowly. Honestly, I expected something better. But that was fine, not the worst. Yet, I would have changed a lot.

Really good way to end this half of the season. Can't wait to see the next half. It was nice to see a "calm before the storm" episode.

It was a brilliant idea to end the first part of season 3 right there, by doing this we were given proper construction to this arc.

The Survey Corps’ sendoff was the most favorite moment of the episode, followed closely by Eren and Jean’s nostalgic fight. Levi and Erwin’s talk after the meeting made it to third most favorite scene of the episode, followed closely behind by Eren, Armin and Mikasa’s conversation. Everyone losing their minds over meat was another favorite.

Erwin was so perfect, I loved his little laugh, I thought the whole interaction with him and Levi was done so well... god, I'm gonna miss him so much, it actually hurts.

Good breather episode, comedy gold with the dinner scenes, and the send-off was just as fun as it was touching. Also, the extra scene was creepy and great, but I hope anime-only watchers don't spoil themselves trying to find the meaning to it...

I think they did a really good work with the Erwin x Leviv talk, and EMA talk... Since enfatizing Erwin's reasons, and showing Armin's, It became more clear Levi's choice in future

I loved EMA talk... it made me pretty sad because of the events which now are taking place in the manga. That was good to see them together in the anime.

My Eruri shipping heart was in tatters, I tell you. I've been looking forward to the ""I'll break your legs"" scene for ages now, and shit, watching it was a literal punch to the gut. Erwin's beautiful roar of victory on the wall, his final ""SUSUME"" just... I was in awe.

The 104th dinner scene was just perfect! It's been so long since we had a scene of such warmhearted camaraderie, it really brought back all my season 1 feels for the babies. Beautifully done.

Overall great Episode, really liked how they foreshadowed Erwins Demise and his conversation with Levi, EMA talk was great too, and the serumbowl scene made for an amazing cliffhanger

The majority of folks thought shifting the send-off to the end of the cour to create an uplifting cliffhanger was a good way to end the season. Several people called attention to how much contrast was felt between such a positive ending and the credits scene.

I think it works great, especially the triumph of the send off and the "oh shit, what's happening" moment in the ED

should have been the first ep of the next arc, with the send off as the cliffhanger

It was a nice, fun send off for the arc. Has the suspense of the scouts going towards the foes. The next episode with the next chapter/s will be perfect for getting back into the series after 6 months

WAIT Studio used it as an effective cliffhanger but from an adaptation perspective it's just like the Wall Titan. Something to keep the audience's attention at the cost of the narrative's flow. If the season was going to be split then rushing the Uprising Arc at breakneck speed resulting in one extra episode was pointless.

The opening of 73 is a perfect opening for the second cour, so I knew from the beginning of the season that ending in this chapter would be their aim. The second half won't struggle for content, and they can either push ahead flashbacks (I expect some of Bert's parts from 96 making it into the adaptation of 77) or content that didn't make it in the first half used to extend other parts (Eren's experiments for Armin realizing how to beat Bert in 81)

I think this will help the second part by being on the way to Shiganshina to start it off.

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS ON THE EPISODE?

A pretty decent choice for a midseason finale. But most important, a pretty good choice for episode 49. Once we're back in April, the series will be celebrating having made it to 50 episodes. Just 2 years ago, we were wondering if we'd ever get episode 26, and now we're getting to a landmark episode that will be exciting and memorable! Nothing between chapters 70-72 could've worked as such a landmark, in my opinion, but chapters 73-74? Absolutely perfect for it.

Let me just tell you how fucking HYPED I am for the next season after those previews during the ED. HYPED. And Jesus fuck yes, Armin looked like a charred French fry that got left behind in the oil. THANK JESUS. I was afraid WIT might downplay that, but no, my boy gonna be the CRONCHIEST.

The glitches were great and not too spoiler-y but WIT absolutely ruined it with the Eren/Mikasa/Levi scene. They showed too much.

Is it just me, or does it seem like most erer/i shippers are kids/teenagers? I have never been a part of that ship, but from what I have seen, a lot of the art also makes Lev/i really slim and feminine looking (with the "classical" anime nose that can stab you to death). It seems, to me, that erer/i is the younger part, who don't see the wrong in a 15 yo with a 30+ yo, while erur/i are the older part who likes tragedy and men with muscles, lol. Thank you for being you! Also, dig your art yo!

hi nonny! first off, thanks for the compliment. very nice of you, and is much needed when i’m not feelin’ so hot. you’re amazing and beautiful, baby.

second off, this is gonna get long, ranty, and personal, so i apologize ahead of time.

i’ll start off by saying: yes, I think you’re absolutely right. not that it’s an all encompassing realization--there’s definitely older fans that like ereri, but i do think they tend to age eren up, and i’m absolutely not the person to shit on that practice.

my friends give me shit all the time because my other main ship is daiken--a ship between two 11 year old boys. and even though they’re razzing me (you bitches know who you are), it’s frustrating to try to explain that if i consume content of them, i only read/write/draw explicit stuff when they are aged up (my main AU has them in their early twenties). i do adore canon-age fluff--first kisses, hand holding, general friendship stories, etc. they absolutely give me life. but there’s no appeal outside of that.

the interesting thing about daiken for me, though, is that i started shipping it when i was 14. i took a long break in shipping it, but came back to it because their story is really appealing to, especially when i started to account for post-canon world exploration. so for me, it was never really “weird” for me, because i feel like i grew up with these characters--i drew one piece of smut for them when i was younger--but i was only 3 years older than their canon age.

also, i think there’s something to be said about younger characters being exposed to extraordinary circumstances that can unintentionally age characters up in your mind. it’s hard to imagine a character like eren having to go through all the bullshit he’s had to go through and then remember “oh yeah, he’s 15″. it’s hard to think about that with character like the warriors, who are maybe only a year older or so and not look at them and be like “you are absolutely the mental age of a 30 year old”. the disconnect between age and characterization can be easily muddled in fiction--almost to the point that it can be frustrating and bends your suspension of disbelief at times.

so what i’m saying is, if you’re closer to the age of one of the characters, i think you’re more likely to sympathize with that character. i can totally understand being 15, looking at a character like levi and being like “wow, levi is fucking hot” and latching onto the character that you most relate to--eren. eren is more attainable for a lot of younger audiences i think. not that he isn’t a complex character (i think most of the cast of snk is), but he is nowhere near as complex as erwin. it’s hard to understand the things erwin is going through without giving him your time, and i can understand not wanting to give him that time. fandom is just for fun, and if dissecting characters, plot, etc isn’t your thing, then to each their own.

so the age gap between ereri doesn’t bother me that much, tbh. it’s the least offensive aspect of the ship for me. i do believe that fiction is fiction, and even though it’s not my thing to see cutesy eren and levi bumpin’ butts, it’s not really my place to say other people can’t. i can’t relate to the younger mindset--i can’t put myself into eren’s shoes, and i don’t want to. but i’m not gonna damn them, because i used to be them.

what bothers me most about ereri is that i don’t think they have any chemistry. levi is a compassionate person, and i’ve discussed before how i think he had genuine appreciation and respect for eren (at least until the most recent chapters). i do think eren respects and looks up to levi. but they have a very formal relationship, and i think the canon supports this. i can’t, for the life of me, see levi being romantically or sexually attracted to eren. ever.

15~ years is a long time. fuck, even 5 years is a long time. that time is a long enough to really show the gap between life experiences and mental growth. i’ve seen it in my own life now--have become so incredibly aware of it recently--that my struggles are very, very different from a 20 year old still in college. i no longer can relate to that age. i can remember that i did it, but i can’t sympathize as well as i could have before. and i think that alone is where ereri falls apart for me.

i’m not sure if i got my point out. i hope any of that made sense. really, i just wanted to say i agree with you, and i don’t think you’re wrong. the maturity of eruri--emotionally, physically, and straight up age-wise--is very, very appealing to me.

I don't know if I like what the manga is doing with the eri story wise right now. Like, after the new chapter, if eri's quirk ends up doing what I think it does, it will probably be a huge loss for the manga story wise. (I love mirio and nighteye, but in this situation, to get them back this way, would probably feel like a huge cop out)

Ah, can’t say you find me on your side on this, anon - generally I’m a positive person! And I like bnha because it’s a positive story! So, yeah, if Eri’s gonna fix it and avoid deaths and permanent damages all around I’m not gonna mind it one bit. I understand your position on this tho, and I’m pretty sure you’re not alone on it. I guess it’s about what you’re looking for in a story, and what the point the story means to bring across is to begin with - you say that having an all around positive outcome to this arc is gonna be a loss for the manga, but bnha isn’t snk. It’s not Tokyo Ghoul, or D.Gray-man, or any other story made to drive across the point that life is sad and sad things happen and you just gotta deal with it as best as you can. The general point of HeroAca, since the very beginning, is that luck exists! Things can turn out for the best! Look at it, our protagonist didn’t even have a quirk and now he’s got the best one out there. Literally became the successor to the greatest hero alive without doing anything aside from being a nice guy

I mean. I get why you’d wish for a... more real story, I guess. I get that you might like the angst and the realness of life being shitty and bad things happening and all that jazz. But that’s never been bnha’s point? Since the very start? Deku’s whole arc is turning into a fight to show you that you should never lose hope and that even set futures can still be rewritten - and, about that, there’s also how big part of this arc is still about Nighteye and what he saw in All Might’s future, and about Deku wanting to prove that he doesn’t have to die, so a girl that can literally rewind said future to make it go some other way? That’s exactly what you need to counter Nighteye’s quirk. Deku might talk about twisting fate all he wants, but considering how Nighteye’s quirk works and how precise and definitive it is, without something that can make what Nighteye saw happen just to bring it back and change it there was no way Deku could have done much.

As I said, I get why you’d be disappointed in the possibility of a total fix-it, but as far as bnha’s plot goes I don’t think the story’s gonna lose anything with simply keeping up the positive-to-a-naive-point look on life it has always had, if that’s what it decides to do. You might end up finding the story less good then you’d been expecting, but that’s because you were seeing bnha as a genre it has never even tried to be. This is still a story in which at some point holding hands saved the day, after all haha

What a question! And one I don’t have a proper answer to, actually - I like both of them equally but for completely different reasons? MomoJirou is the type of ship I sorta see as more or less canon, like, they’re pretty damn obvious aren’t they? And they’re besties! And the aesthetics work so well! So generally I’m like, if I gotta pick one person for Jirou, basing the decision solely on canon stuff, I’m gonna pick Momo. They’re soft and warm too, have sort of a coffee-shop-AU feel to them, I love it

On the other hand Jirou and Mina don’t really have a significant relationship in canon yet - they’re friends and chill together now and again, but haven’t really interacted much in a proper way for me to say “yes, I can see it, this is a ship with some serious foundation” like I can with Momo. But. I understand this ship in a way I can’t seem to manage with MomoJirou. What Jirou would love in Mina and what Mina would love in Jirou, why they’d love each other, how they’d spend their time together and what the general feel of their story would be - the mood of it and the reasons behind it, I understand them, and I can’t seem to manage to do that with Momo yet.

So the actual answer is, if it’s about which of the two gives me more of a “this might actually be canon” feel, then it’s Momo. I do believe they love each other and their relationship is lovely. But if it’s about which of the two I have more fun thinking about, then Mina. It’s two very different ships with very different moods, after all haha

of mine? i don’t knowww it’s all very subjective isn’t it. umm, again, this one because it started from a small drabble when i was in a mood and then grew into like an 8k soft sad pile of fluff but i just really love it? but also i like I hope you had the time of your life because i like to imagine that ronan actually showed up to adam’s graduation.

most popular story of the year?

The Road to Nowhere has the most kudos so I guess that one :)

story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:

i don’t think that any are especially under-appreciated, there’s always going to be some that get more attention than others i guess, but it’s up to a reader to decide what they want to read and what they don’t. i tend to find that fics not involving the most popular ships are more likely to go under the radar but that’s to be expected and i don’t take it personally, they’re there if people want to find them :)

most fun story to write:

TBH some of the tumblr prompts were super fun? i LOVED writing this one especially. also i have a VERY soft spot for this because i got to write adam singing to mr. mister.

story with the single sexiest moment:

ahahahaha, i cannot write sexy to save my life. i have two fics that sort of allude to sexy times VERY briefly (this one and this one) but that is the best i can offer you lol. i am a ball of fluff at heart.

sweetest story:

how about all of them ha. Anything to make you smile is pretty damn sweet, but again, the tumblr prompts were all super soft and sweet. this one is my fave pynch one, and this one is (probably) my fave andreil one.

”holy crap, that’s wrong, even for you!” story:

i actually don’t think i have one that fits this bill? i guess there’s moments in the road to nowhere but honestly it’s no worse than anything that happens in canon.

story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters most & most unintentionally telling story:

oooh that’s an interesting question. probably yes, coach because it gave me an opportunity to look at characters through wymack’s perspective which was so worth doing. it’s not my best written fic probably, but it was for sure one of the most rewarding.

hardest story to write:

the road to nowhere at times just because i had no real outline or plan, just a very basic idea so i did struggle sometimes to link parts of it together. and also hands open, heart open because it was a prompt that was so far out of my comfort zone that at first i wasn’t sure if i’d be able to do anything with it. but i’m glad i did because i sort of love it now even though it’s a mess :)

biggest disappointment:

i don’t really have one. it was a pretty good fanfic year :)

biggest surprise:

that anyone actually read anything i wrote and the wonderful responses i’ve been given! i love you guys <3

In Person Livestream

In Person Livestream Fandom: AoT/SnK Pairing: YumiKuri Summary: Modern AU in which Ymir is a member of a Games Grumps-esque channel invited to a con as a guest. She has little knowledge about the other guests but still ends up taking interest in one after a chance meeting. AN: Part of my Spooky Snippets story dump. For more details please see this post.

She still isn’t sure how Connie and Sasha coaxed her in to this. A part of her wants to say that it’s most likely because she needed a weekend out of town. After all, they’re about two hundred miles out and they aren’t having to spending a dime for it! That’s mostly thanks to Jean and Marco, though, but that’s another aspect of it.

Internet fame was never something that Ymir was ever actively seeking – given she had better things to do with her time – but it had fallen in to her lap by complete accident. Marco and Jean had started a shared account together on some video site where they basically just played video games, got angry and talked about their days; or, more correctly, Jean would flip his shit while Marco proceeded to instigate more freak-outs from him, document it all and then post the shit-show for all to enjoy. Originally it was just the two of them playing, but as their popularity grew, fans started asking about the frequent friends mentioned in their stories; specifically, Connie, Sasha and Ymir herself being the most common culprits. As such, they created an additional segment where they would have a combination of any of the five of them – usually no more than three but there had been a handful of times where four of them were available – would get together to play video games and just play off of one another.

Ymir still wasn’t one hundred percent sure on where her popularity came from, especially when compared to her friends. Sasha was ditzy and easily excitable, making her more prone to bouts of innocent and genuine confusion when she made mistakes on the games. She was also kinda gullible, making her easy to troll with false information, and the comedy with that simply wrote itself. Connie was smart but he also tended to be a bit of an arrogant dick. He was typically the guilty one when it came to trolling Sasha and he would laugh all the while. Jean was similar to Connie, what with being a know-it-all and a braggart, but he had the added perk of a short fuse. It took a lot to get Connie genuinely angry – the worst he’d gotten being some serious frustration – but Jean would lost his damn his mind once he got started. It was mostly the authenticity of his rage paired with the completely stupid shit he’d spew in his fits. Marco, meanwhile, was likeable because of how he presented himself. He was naturally charismatic but he played it up for the show – being even more of a saint than usual – but underneath it all he was actually a total sadist. He played well with Jean because he knew just the littlest, most innocuous ways to take Jean’s rage from a fireplace to a wildfire spanning an entire nature conservation. Ymir, however, was just the one that typically stayed lax and just made shitty, 13 year old level sex jokes.

Regardless of her being relatively baffled by the situation, she figured it was nice to have people enjoy her immature snark.

It was this reason that she was here, out of her element, at some anime convention with Sasha and Connie. The invitation had been extended to their whole crew but Marco and Jean were already going to be out of town for their three-year anniversary. All-expenses paid in exchange for them attending the convention, doing some autograph sessions, and doing a couple Q&A sessions with their friends? Now that was a perk Ymir could get behind.

Or, rather, that was what she’d thought until she saw some guy who looked like he should be in a retirement home walk in to the hotel in a school girl uniform.

“So,” She trails, leaning against the side of Connie’s car as he pops the trunk, “what exactly have I signed up for here?”

He looks at her with a quirked eyebrow before following her gaze and snorting. “Oh, don’t worry; that’s another one of the guests, actually,” He says before reaching in and pulling one of the bags out and setting it down.

Her scowls deepens at that. “Uh, what?”

“He’s another one of the guests. I can’t remember his name right now but he does cross play videos,” He says with a casual shrug.

Sasha suddenly appears around the corner of the car with a bright grin. “That’s Sty-Dis! He’s super cool!” Sasha gushes excitedly, before hearing her name. She turns around and squeals before darting off toward a woman with black hair in a red scarf, waving and cheering.

“Right… And how many other guests like him are going to be here?” Ymir asks Connie suspiciously, grabbing the handle of her suitcase.

“Just him. They try to have a variety of guests from the big, popular types of videos. There’s Sty-Dis, Ask Ackerman, Leonhardt Roars, Titanic Sound Waves, and some other cool people too. Sasha and me have gotten to know a lot of them personally so it’s always a blast getting to hand out with them,” He comments with a grin, turning to watch Sasha and the other girl as he closes the trunk.

Ymir hums before turning and pointing to the hotel. “Well, anyway, I’m gonna head in and get my key for the room if you don’t need me out here,”

“Sure thing. We should be up in a bit!” He calls after her before taking he and Sasha’s luggage and heading to join her.

Ymir heads inside and nearly runs back out at the small cluster of people gathered around. They all have badges on them labeled “Volunteer” and “Guest” respectively – more of them being “Volunteers”, she notes – and they all seem so friendly with one another. She feels a bit uneasy as she approaches the front desk, explaining her situation to the clerk. The girl smiles at her warmly and hands her a key card in a little slip, the room number on the front, then informs her to head directly through the crowd to get her Guest pass.

Her trek through the crowd is mercifully brief, but she swears she’s going to need some therapy after this; the old guy’s skirt rides up as she passes to reveal lacy pink panties.

There are two volunteers settled at the desk, with another of the guests standing and chatting with them. The female volunteer is the one that spots Ymir and waves her over. “Hi-ya! How are you doing?” She asks happily.

“Hi. And fine, thanks,” Ymir answers, looking back over her shoulder when she hears someone shouting about losing a game or something. Almost everyone else in the crowd howls in agony at the response and she’s left completely baffled.

The volunteer giggles at her bemusement. “Pretty energetic, huh?”

“That’s certainly one word for it. Haven’t had to deal with this much energy and potent body odor since my 8th grade promotion,” She quips dryly. The other guest suddenly gasps, causing Ymir to look over at her sideways. “What? Not like that one?”

“You’re Ymir, aren’t you?” She asks.

“How do you know that?” She realizes the minute the question leaves her mouth that it is probably a dumb one. While Ymir herself isn’t big on watching other people’s videos – Hell, she doesn’t even really watch the videos she participates in – she knows for a fact from her friends that a lot of them watch each other. It wouldn’t be too surprising for someone to recognize her from the videos; or, she realizes, it would make sense if it wasn’t for the fact she’s never shown her face in any of the videos.

The girl giggles – a cute giggle that seems to fit a tiny blonde thing like her – and rubs at the back of her head shyly. “Ah, sorry. That’s the perfect pitch talking for me!”

“Perfect pitch? Is that, like, your stage handle or something?” Ymir asks, completely lost.

“Oh, no,” Blondie answers with another giggle, “perfect pitch is a musical term. It means that my ears are naturally turned so that I can pick up on when a note is being played in the exact right octave or not. It also means I can pick up on people’s voices pretty well too.”

“Oh, that’s kinda cool,”

“Hm. It has its uses,” She agrees. The volunteer offers Ymir her own guest badge – decked out with a nifty little picture of two robots fighting – and Ymir let’s Blondie lead her away from the booth. “I’m admittedly surprised to see you here. Jean makes it sound like you don’t really have any interest in this sort of stuff.”

“Oh, I don’t really. I do the show because they asked me to and I’m here because it sounded like a good excuse to get out of town for the weekend,” Ymir says with a shrug, letting Blondie lead her around. She should head up and get her luggage put away at least, but then again she’s kind of enjoying talking to the bubbly blonde.

Blondie being cute just happens to be a nice perk of it all.

“Well, you certainly picked a good time to attend a convention; this is one of the bigger cons, so there’s going to be plenty of con-goers to meet and greet,” She beams.

“So long as they don’t invade my space too much, I should be fine,” She says with a small shrug. She sees the elevators up ahead and realizes that Blondie seemed to have had the same thought that she did. “What exactly goes on at one of these, anyway? I mean, I know Sasha mentioned we’d be doing a Q and A session and an autograph session, but what else is there to these things?”

“Well, there are plenty of other panels that go on, too,” Blondie says, hitting the up button as they reach the elevator. She lets Ymir slip in with her luggage first before joining her inside. “A lot of the other guests are doing panels too, but other than them, there are other fun panels too. There’s cosplay gatherings for photo shoots with other people wearing cosplays from the same series as you, dance training where you learn to do some of the little dances from different anime, and the AMV contest is always pretty cool to see. There’s also hentai screenings, bad fan-fiction readings, jeopardy-style games where they pick other con-guests as the contestants, and there’s always the vendor hall to peruse if you just want to buy some cool stuff. The Artist Alley is great too; lots of really talented artists with great quality prints and additional little things!”

Ymir hums in response, hitting the button for the fifteenth floor. Blondie reaches over and hits the sixteen, shrugging and saying, “I need to go make sure my roommates are done getting settled. We have the opening dinner to attend and I don’t want us to be late.”

“Oh, I didn’t know about that. Do we have to make small talk about things no one really cares about?” Ymir asks with a small scowl.

Blondie giggles a bit. “No, it’s mostly just going over the rules and regulations, as well as finalizing the schedule for the panels with everyone. Typically pretty short, sweet, to the point, and done over some pretty good food,” She hums. They fall in to casual chatter for the remained of the brief ride up to Ymir’s floor, the brunette howling in laughter as Blondie retell some funny stories from a past convention that involved Jean, a chicken and cheese quesadilla and a con guest dressed up as Naruto Uzamaki. As Ymir gets off, Blondie waves and comments that she’ll keep an eye out for Ymir at the dinner that evening.

Ymir waves back, watching the door close before it dawns on her that she never asked the other her name. Sure, it wasn’t like she was never going to see her again, but she still would have liked to know her name and her account. Maybe do a little researching, see if pursuing this girl would be worth it or not. Her phone buzzes in her pocket suddenly, a text from Connie lighting up her phone. A slow smile turns up on her lips. She had almost forgotten she was travelling with two of her dedicated cohorts, whom seemed to know a lot of the other guests here.

She texts him back, already looking forward to asking them if they recognize Blondie and, if they do, picking their brains.

Thoughts from a returning SnK fan

Like most fans during the peak of SnK’s popularity (2013-2014), I was pretty much going through a huge SnK craze. I remember following a bunch of SnK-related blogs, looking at fanart, checking and staying in the tags almost every hour, reading a lot of meta material, playing OSTs on repeat, the whole shebang. And like most fans, my interest dramatically fell by the wayside when the wait for S2 pretty much grew into eternity. Even when I got around to reading the manga (starting from where S1 left off), life became super chaotic and busy. But now I’m back! (And hopefully for good?) I’m actually pleasantly surprised that the fandom on here is still going strong. Obviously not to the same hype everyone was living up to back in 2013. To those who’ve been committed to the manga and fandom after all these years, major kudos and I’m sure your tired eyes have seen a lot. So although I had let go of this series, I’ve been playing catch up these last couple of months simply because SnK holds a special place in my heart. With everything I’ve gathered up up to this point, here are the immediate and nonsensical thoughts coming from a returning fan, fresh and untainted by years of shipping wars, fanon vs. canon wars, misconstrued meta discussions, and other fun stuff that comes with being in a fandom:
