#i feel like. dragon age origins is dark fantasy. dragon age 2 is a political thriller that is at times too really dark

i dont think i will ever be over dragon age 2. like. bioware made an epic fantasy story about a chosen one having to save a country and stop the apocalypse and then they made the second installment of the series be about the sociopolitical climate in ONE city through the lens of a family of refugees fleeing from the war of the first game and just. made it about political tensions and class dynamics and the influences of living in a church-mandated state and the growing tension over an occupied piece of the city and political killings and interpersonal conflict and power and its story is ENTIRELY character-driven. it has easily the most iconic set of companion characters. the premise of living through a story told over the course of ten years and knowing from the start that something really bad will happen in the end was so fresh and exciting. the fact that the acts really built on top of each other andhow much the city changed over time. and the game was so mature in terms of the topic of fighting against oppression in so many ways (im usually generous and say that the short development time left some things a bit wanting), and as much as some people say that the game treats mages and templars as being equally bad, i don't think that that is actually true about the game and it very earnestly tries to grapple with some pretty complex political dynamics.
and then the game completely flopped financially and was almost universally hated for its queer themes and its sympathy for "terrorism" and a lot of the things that stemmed from basically having no production time at all and then the studio just made another epic fantasy story about a chosen one that has to save the world from the apocalypse

can you like. tell me a little about dragon age. seeing your posts about it has got me interested in playing but i have little to no clue what it actually is
Tumblr media
Boy can I explain nonny <3 This is a bit long so strap in and im sorry
Dragon Age is (currently) a three game series composed of Dragon Age: Origins (PS3, Xbox 360/Xbox One, PC), Dragon Age: II (PS3, Xbox 360/Xbox One, PC), and Dragon Age: Inquisition (PS4, Xbox One, PC) and its really unique because of its selling point that your actions impact the games as you progress. Like if you kill one character in one game they’ll stay dead through the rest of the series which makes you feel lived in the story and that your actions matter. Dragon Age is also an RPG so a roleplaying game kind of along the same lines of DnD where you get to make and play your own character. And yes there are romances and you can be gay.
The First Game of the series is Dragon Age: Origins where you choose from a selection of six unique (technically seven) origins or backgrounds for your character. You can be anywhere from a human noble or a Dalish elf, the unique elven culture in Dragon Age of nomadic clans dedicating to reclaiming their past. But eventually, from the events in your origin, you wind up a member of a secretive and elite order known as the Grey Wardens whose duty is to protect the world from the Blight.
The Blight is this spread of a horrible disease known as the Taint but is characterized by the presence of Darkspawn, a kind of zombie like creature who exists only to destroy the world. Grey Wardens take the heavy duty of protecting the world from the Blight, which have nearly wiped all of humanity multiple times, at all costs. And currently the country of Ferelden is under going a blight and due to events you wind up the only Grey Warden with your companion Alistair to save the world and reunite Ferelden which had fallen under a civil war.
Along Origins you meet many interesting characters. Alistair is your friendly co-warden who has a mysterious parentage that he hides under his happy go lucky attitude. In contrast to Alistair is the witch Morrigan who is your favorite goth swamp queen who would insult you and you thank her. In addition you meet your chaotic bi rogues Zevran and Leliana. Leliana is a nun who is on the run and hiding from a dark past and she is suspiciously good at murder. And Zevran is not at all hiding his aptitude for murder as an Assassin for hire who tried and failed to kill you but who can ignore that charming bastard?
Dragon Age II follows a much smaller story of a Ferelden refuge who had escaped from the Blight to the city of Kirkwall named Hawke. Unlike in origins where you get to pick your background 2 limits you to Hawke but fear not, Hawke is a loveable bastard and you can still customize them. Throughout DA2 you get to experience all the delights Kirkwall has to offer: Demons, crime, corrupt cops, and fighting your way to survive in this city and make a name for yourself.
Where Origins sets the stage for the world DA2 you are the actor in that play - literally the game is divided into 3 acts that take place over a span of 7 years. DA2′s main conflict is the argument of Mages vs Templars, as in DA’s lore while there are those who are born with magic they are forced to live in prisons policed by the Templar order and the church. You explore the more political arguments of; are the Templars right in their fears of magic as Kirkwall is filled to the brim with corrupt mages or do Mages deserve the chance to live and prove themselves freely from their prisons.
Your romancable companions in DA2 are all bisexuals as the true theme of DA2 is: be gay do crime. You have the foils of Anders: the runaway mage who fled from the prisons the mages are housed in and is determined to bring mages to freedom, and Fenris: the runaway escaped slave who curses magic for only inflicting pain and suffering in his life and wants his warnings to be heard about the dangers magic bring. In addition you also have Merrill, your cute but terrifying Dalish mage who would probably murder you with a cute smile and then go oops. And of course, my pirate wife Isabela, who lives a life free from commitment and is dedicated to the idea everyone should have a good time no matter the cost. Also while not romancable Hawke’s bff Varric deserves every ounce of praise he gets as never before has the energy of “two idiots sharing a braincell” ever been so well adapted.
Then finally we reach Inquisition. After the events of DA2 it triggers a full on war between the Mages and Templars that is destroying the land and causing severe damage that neither side can handle anymore. Desperate for an end to the conflict the Divine (err... fantasy pope) calls for a meeting on both sides... only for the entire thing to literally explode. Killing everyone present and causing a hole in the sky which now means demons are raining like cats and dogs you are the only one to survive. In Inquisition you can once again return to pick between unique backgrounds like in Origins but you don’t get to play through those backgrounds sadly.
You now possess something on your left hand which gives you the ability to patch up the hole in the sky that is pissing demons and due to being the only survivor everyone is incredibly confused about you. Eventually the Inquisition is formed around you, the character they are calling the Herald of Andraste (Andraste is fantasy Jesus) due to your ability to seal the holes. The mystery unfolds as over the course of the game you learn what caused the explosion, how you are connected, and what exactly the mark on your hand is.
DAI has the largest numbers of romance options so I’m gonna give a quick bullet point list for them all
Iron Bull (Pansexual, All Races): A Qunari (think Tiefling but big and beefy) mercenary who is far more clever than he lets on, as well as being the rope top dom of your dreams. Literally! Bull’s romance is a really healthy bdsm relationship if you are interested its very well done
Josephine (Bisexual, All Races): Your loveable ambassador and advisor for the inquisition. She is a workaholic noble who is a tried and true classic romance. Sweep her off her feet and duel for her hand all while navigating the nobility
Dorian (Gay, All Races): The flamboyant pariah rock star mage, he demands attention whenever he walks into the room. Although he wants to be all talk and no emotions make no mistake he is making puppy eyes at you the entire time and gets deeply offended if you say he is. Also not going to lie Dorian is the best piece of gay male rep in gaming history.
Cassandra (Male-only, all Races): Your stern warrior wife who is all serious no funny business... expect she is a bleeding heart romantic who reads horrible smut for fun. You wish to COURT HER?? I mean... if you want 👉👈 she won’t say no...
Blackwall (Female-only, All Races): Your weird dilf who wants desperately to prove himself every step of the way and help people. He is a constable for the Grey Wardens, but all the details on him seem murky... Ah well I’m sure its nothing, the Grey Wardens are a secretive order after all.
Sera (Lesbian, All Races): My wild child, monster chugging, beer guzzling, arrow shooting lesbian. Sera is here for a fun time and not a serious one, she’ll always make sure to keep you humble and ensure you aren’t getting to big for your breeches.
Cullen (Female-Only, Human and Elf only): Cullen’s the Inquisition’s commander who oohh boy is steeped in a lot of trauma. Cullen’s actually a character you get to know through out the series and see just all the horrible nonsense he’s been through. But he is your tragic self loathing... he isn’t princely but he is your adorkable charming
Solas (Female-Only, Elf Only): The humble apostate who joins the Inquisition out of curiosity of the breech, he is an expert on what the hell is going on with that hole in the sky. However, he holds a wisdom that goes far deeper than your typical apostate. Smooth talking and refined he carries a heavy cloud over him.
I left out a lot and all the nonsense with books and what have you but this is the easiest overview of the series I can offer. It’s main selling points is the deep story and characters throughout the games. And of course who doesn’t love the ability to make and roleplay your own character as a bonus? The games are bit of a flawed gem and Origins in my ugly child but they are truly a delight if you are interested

Actively Updating
No Clean Slate (Sherlock) - 17 chapters posted
Not even Mary's death is enough to wipe her slate clean. Especially when she never died at all. John Watson must face up to his wife's past and keep his daughter safe. He doesn't ask for help, not from anyone.
Except Sherlock Holmes.
Sorcerer’s Bane (Merlin) - 2 chapters posted
Arthur gave Merlin his cloak thinking only of the warmth it would offer in a snowstorm. He never thought his manservant may be mistaken for him and snatched by bandits. Nor did he expect his dashing rescue of Merlin to turn his world so utterly on his head.
Because the bandits hadn't kidnapped a prince. They'd snatched a sorcerer, and now captivity is the least of anyone's problems.
Working On Intermittently/When Patrons Vote I Do So!
Monachopsis (Sherlock)
" Monachopsis n. the subtle but persistent feeling of being out of place. It takes John Watson decades to discover where he really belongs." Magical realism (sorta) and dream sharing. Eventual Johnlock.
Guard Of Diocletian (Sherlock)
'What's his Shift?' John asked, frowning to himself. Sherlock had not mentioned anything about another form. That in itself was not unusual. A lot of people were rather private about their alternative shapes. It was frowned upon to ask someone outright what creature they were when changed, but Mike was like him, baseline, and if he was going to live with this man then he needed to know what he could wake up to find one morning. Shedding on the furniture was one thing, but he had no real desire to find a strange, threatening animal in the living room one day.
'He isn't one, is he?' Mike's eyebrows were up, his honest face truly puzzled. 'I've never seen him change, and he's been coming here for years. I mean, I suppose he could be, but...' Mike trailed off with a shrug. 'I think he's like us.'
John pursed his lips, tapping his cane on the floor as he shook his head. 'No, Mike, he is nothing like us.' Animal/Fantasy shapeshifter AU. Casefic.
Catlock 10
Sherlock and John uncover a Felisian trafficking ring. Sherlock uses himself as bait.
Merlock
Injured and sent home to England, John finds himself guarding a mysterious tank at Baskerville. Will he do his duty, or will he risk it all to help rescue the man imprisoned within the watery depths?
Original
"Sometimes the murders were simple: a knife in the dark and bloody secrets that soon found their way into the light. Those were the good days, but in a city where magic is both revered and maligned, death is rarely so straightforward.
Lucy Davis is an officer of the Blackguard, and it’s up to her to solve those crimes rooted in the extraordinary."
Where The Heart Is (Hobbit)
'There was an attack. Raiders. There was no warning of their coming.' Gandalf sighs, and it is a broken sound of someone who has failed in their duty of care.  The raiders took everything they could carry, and burned everything they could not. Many of the fallen were impossible to recognise.' Gandalf leans on his staff, and the wizard looks more tired than the King has ever seen him. He swallows, and Thorin wants to put his hands over his ears, because he knows, sick and certain now, why Bilbo's letters had stopped.
'Bilbo is not among those who live.'
(Bilbo's presumed dead, but has actually been taken by raiders. Thorin must rebuild his kingdom with a broken heart, while Bilbo fights his way across the wild north, broken and bleeding, to make his way back to the mountain that has become his home. With bonus hobbits re-homing in Erebor. A fair bit written. Not yet posted)
Erebor Never Fell AU
Bilbo Baggins and his mother leave the Shire after his father's death, as Belladonna has little left to live for but adventure. Unfortunately, she falls afoul of a cruel prince, a man who is used to taking what he wants. In the ensuing struggle, both she and the prince lose their lives, and it is Bilbo who wielded the blade which avenged his mother.
Taking prisoner and accused of murder, his sentence is to be the king’s food-taster. His eyes are bound, as he is unfit to look upon the Men who imprison him, and every day he is dosed with poison and every evening given enough antidote to keep him alive.
Such is his existence, until the day his Master takes him to Erebor as part of his retinue, and he discovers the promise of a future among the dwarves who live there. Especially the eldest dwarven prince, Thorin Oakenshield.
(Erebor never fell AU with political intrigue, and Bilbo Baggins finding friends when he thought there was no one left in the world who cared for him at all.)
Quarantine Hobbit Fic
Inspired by the prompt of quarantine. Erebor is saved from the dragon and beginning to rebuild, but Thorin, newly healed from the injuries of the battle, suddenly takes ill.
The sickness is a dwarf's worst fear: highly contagious and always fatal. Thorin locks himself away to die a slow death, alone. Of he would, if not for the persistence of a certain hobbit.
Bilbo breaks into the royal chambers, effectively locking himself away with Thorin. Except as the disease progresses, he begins to think it looks rather familiar. In fact, it's a common childhood illness, one hobbits have been able to cure for years.
Plenty of Bilbo and Thorin hurt/comfort and a happy ending. (Of course)
Untitled Merlin Fic
Friends make all the difference. What if the knights of the round table found their way to Camelot before Arthur became king? What difference would that make to Arthur, to Merlin, and to their destiny? (25k written, unpublished. In my head this is basically entitled *~shenanigans, love and a golden age~*
I’m late replying to this, so consider yourself tagged if you’ve not yet done it <3

Scrapbook 2021 | Part I
For anyone that’s new to this, this is how I keep track of all of the things I enjoy and/or create throughout the year. I have literally been doing this since I had a livejournal. I think the first one was 2011? Maybe? In which case, woohoo, ten years of scrapbooking!
It’s a nice little snippet of my life and helps to organize my brain.
A reminder:
Normal font - Indifferent/Neutral Italicized font - Enjoyed bold font - Loved with an asterisk* - All time favorite (bracketed titles) - Re-watches/Re-reads strikethough - Disliked
Goals are: read 80 books, finish five video games, write more than 20 fics or something larger than 20k, and write either an original short story or start a novel.

101 DRAGON AGE QUESTIONS | not accepting
for the sake of reducing the number of ooc posts i’m answering these all in one and just @ing the people who asked the questions! thank you for them all!
if you sent me one of these btw and rbed this meme yourself and i didn’t send you something, please let me know! i want to send you things back and must have missed you reblogging the meme. this includes non-mutuals.
1. How did you get into Dragon Age? | asked by @kaaras-adaar & @dreamerlavellan
Sort of by accident, actually. It was the summer between my freshman and sophomore years in university (2011) and summertime is generally a time of inactivity and depression because I cannot tolerate the weather here. My dad happened to own Origins and I picked it up because??? Fantasy? RPG?
Starting the game I saw you could play as a dwarf, who have been my favourites in fantasy since a child as The Hobbit is among my favourite books. Then after that I fell in love with the worldbuilding for dwarves and Gorim, my first actual Dragon Age love. I was more or less hooked after that. DA was actually not my first Bioware game, I was obsessed with Jade Empire as a kid so like Origins appealed to me immediately despite being far less fun to play than literally any other Bioware game I’ve ever played. The characters and world more than made up for it.
I beat it relatively quickly and my dad bought Dragon Age II which had come out earlier that day, actually against my suggestion because I’d heard it wasn’t good. And in this instance my dad forgetting something I said turned out for the best because I ended up enjoying DAII more in some respects. While it took me a while to join the fandom as a content producer I was a consumer and certified DA trash from then on.
2. Have you finished all three games? | asked by @kaaras-adaar
Kskjdfs yes. I’ve beaten each at least 4 times, but probably more like 8. The only thing I haven’t played are some of the Origins DLC because as much as I enjoy my replays I am so ready to be out by the end of the game (and I have the worst luck with Awakening bugs) and I also don’t have Sebastians DLC b/c his never goes on sale individually and I refuse to spend more than like $4 on him.
3. How long did it take you to finish the series? | asked by @kaaras-adaar
I honestly don’t know. I think it took me like a week to beat Inquisition without 100%ing it, I’d say my first playthroughs all probably took about that long. I tend not to do everything in my first playthrough. Like shard collecting didn’t happen until round two, etc.
7. Favorite DA:O backstory? | asked by @dreamerlavellan & @fatefaulted
I’ve played through all of them and I enjoy them all except Cousland, but my favourite is Aeducan. I enjoy the politics, the culture, the aesthetic of Orzammar. I love Gorim Saelac and the surprising amount of depth to this character who is designed to be thrown away after the prologue. I love how it ties you to the Darkspawn threat in a bigger way than any of the origins accomplish. I love how it ties you to the Orzammar plot later in the game, and playing Aeducan first is probably one reason why I adore that branch of the game. It’s a good origin that establishes its world really well and has great characters to boot.
11. Share a pic of your favorite OC from any DA game. | asked by @dreamerlavellan
I just want to share pics of my girl and Solas’ future husband.
Tumblr media
Ian Lavellan, non-Inquisitor written by @theshirallen
Tumblr media
Thora Cadash, dwarven Inquisitor and default Inquisitor for this blog written by... me lmao.
22. Favorite DA2 party combo? | asked by @fatefaulted
My main Hawke is a mage Hawke, so this party is horrendously imbalanced, but: Varric, Merrill, Isabela. They all just like each other and I think that’s neat. Although in act one my favourite is probably Carver, Merrill, Isabela / Varric. Unfortunately the game doesn’t want me to have a warrior in my party.
24. Favorite main-story quest from DA:I? | asked by @kaaras-adaar
It’s hard to pick between In Hushed Whispers and In Your Heart Shall Burn. I love seeing the red lyrium’d companions and the dark future of Thedas, and speculating on what happened in the intervening year. I love reflecting on what it must do for the Inquisitor to see that and have it be undone. I think it sets up the rest of the game really well, and in ways Champions of the Just doesn’t do quite as well.
In Your Heart Shall burn is a simpler quest but I think the power and emotions in the quest are so raw. Playing this the first time was riveting and I was on the edge of my seat. The triumph of closing the Breach, the strangeness of your first encounter with Cole (whose appearance at the gates is another reason I prefer IHW tbh, I think it’s more tension building than Dorian’s), Corypheus, crawling through the snow. Capping it off with The Dawn Will Come and the journey to Skyhold idk, it’s just such an emotional high point in the series that every time I replay I get goosebumps.
25. Favorite DA:I place? | asked by @fatefaulted
It’s a tie between the Frostback Basin and the Emerald Graves. I love the lore in both, as elf trash I prefer the lore in the graves especially if I can include the Din’an Hanin into that category. But the Avvar lore and Ameridan is also Very Good, and while I adore the giant trees of the graves the Frostback Basin clearly was able to have more resources poured into its design, and as a result the different sections of the map have so much more character.
A close runner-up is the Hinterlands, as I think the quests there are fun and it feels like home. I enjoy returning to it. Which is good, b/c I’ve played through it... a lot... I think loving it might be a coping mechanism, but also I love the vibe of the early game that’s best captured in the Hinterlands.
32. Favorite DLC mission overall? | asked by @fatefaulted
Trespasser is up there with Shivering Isles as my favourite DLC ever produced. Its hits every emotional beat I think it needed to hit, set up the next game with greater detail and intrigue than the initial epilogue, and I’m honestly dying to get to replay it again on Thora despite what it does to my nerves. The first time I played it I could feel my heart beating faster like wtf me.
37. Blood magic: yes or no? | asked by @hopewrought
Would I use it myself? No. Morally I think it can be reprehensible but also neutral, much like any other magic in the game. In certain characters I think even if used for good it may encourage unhealthy habits, but I think it can be learned to be engaged with in better ways.
59. Who was written really poorly? | asked by @theshirallen you can’t hide behind anon I know it was you
Oghren fucking Kondrat. When I think about the reasons Origins is my least favourite game he is among them. With Oghren there was a really good chance to portray an alcoholic abuse victim, suffering from severe mental health issues, and still mourning his wife, with the respect it deserves. Instead he just... is a gross sexist dwarf and his alcoholism is mostly played for jokes. And then he comes back in Awakening and... continues to be a gross sexist dwarf whose alcoholism is mostly played for jokes.
There could have been some really interesting stuff with Oghren, the Warrior caste of dwarves I think would suffer from issues similar to qunari warriors, where when they can no longer fill the purpose society has dictated they must serve, what then? They can’t do anything but fight. There could be comradery with Sten, or perhaps Zevran or Alistair, or any of the companions who have had the path their lives took dictated to them by societal forces they had no say in (even if they are happy with that direction). There are snippets of good stuff in here, the line “let us show them our hearts, Warden, and then show them theirs” is one of the best of the good-byes the game offers us imo. It’s a shame about what came before.
Like there are other characters, such as Sera, who I think were done dirty by their writers, but Sera at least got some growth in the DLC and there were attempts to address criticism of her character. Oghren in Awakening was just kind of a take two of an already poorly-done arc.
60. Who do you wish had been given more story? | asked by @hopewrought
I wish Briala had more, like that she had some impact on the story in universes where Gaspard isn’t crowned with her as his puppetmaster. She and the elves reappears in that but not if you reunite her with Celene or exile her, and I think it would’ve been neat. I also wish she’d had a chance to interact with Solas in some small way given how many parallels were drawn by one of his own agents during Masked Empire.
I also wish we had more about dwarves in general in 2 and Inquisition. We get some great lore in Inquisition that was set up in 2, but with our only dwarf companion being Varric, who honestly has a relationship with his race that at times is comparable to Sera’s, it pulls a few of its punches. I really think they have dwarves set up to be important players in the next game, with their architecture featuring heavily in the dev diary, buuut no dwarves to be seen. So who knows. Just give me dwarves in the next game who aren’t Varric Bioware pls. Let me kiss one maybe.
61. Favorite NPC? | asked by @kaaras-adaar
I’m not going to count advisors even though they kinda are NPCs and I’m going to answer one for each game so uhh...
Origins - Anora
DA2 - Feynriel
DA:I - Krem
Bonus - Lord Woolsley, the only unproblematic DA character
63. Best story moment? | asked by @ghilannainguideme
It’s a tie between the journey to Skyhold and the talk with Solas at the end of Trespasser and the resulting disbanding of the Inquisition (if you so choose). I really can’t separate them because I think the reason Trespasser works so well is how it calls back to the very beginning of Inquisition and that moment with Solas in the snow. It’s triumphant and sad, something’s ending, the fellowship is breaking, but you know all of you will continue to work towards a better world apart.
In DA:O I think it’d be saying good-bye before the final battle and in DA2 I think the moment where you can tell the Arishok he was right to take in the elves who killed that guardmen is good. Probably one of the reasons why I think Hawke-Arishok work so well as a protagonist-antagonist combination.
81. Favorite fanfic? | asked by @ghilannainguideme
I don’t read a lot of fanfic, actually. Save what I read on here, which I do count, but idk if other people do.
My favourite writers to read are @theshirallen, obviously. Joly wants to tweakIan’s personal quest but I think the version they have written now is still very good and you can find it here. I love reading Peace’s stuff and find their smut especially spicy in the best possible way, you can find a Merrill/f!Mahariel piece here! Gaia doesn’t write on Tumblr much these days, but she wrote a wonderful Tug/Sketch (the companions from Leliana’s Song) that you can find here.
I follow so many talented writers and I can’t list them all but here are a few I can fire off real fast: @theshirallen / @ghilannainguideme / @seahaloed / @sabraelin / @valorcorrupt / @mercysought / @hopewrought / @ofrevas / @skyheld have all moved me with their words at some point, be it in fic or rp.
82. Favorite fanart/fanartist? | asked by @ghilannainguideme
Again I just can’t choose jsdfks.
The easiest way is to just link my Solas fanart tag. Obviously this favours Solas artists, however, so also here’s a link to thedaswlw where there’s a boatload of amazing fanart all of wlw.
Of people I’m mutuals with I know @abracafockyou, @kaaras-adaar, @dalathin (currently inactive but I gotta link them), and @syntharts are all very talented artists.  I’m also a big fan of destinyapostacy, nipuni, elbenherzart, starscollected (on twitter), and many more.
97. What’s your favorite DA mod? | asked by @ghilannainguideme & @hopewrought
I’ll chose one as many as I want to apparently from each game again, b/c why not?
DA:O - I have to admit I find this game hard to mod because nothing can really salvage the gameplay or look of the game. I need Better Dwarf Model so I don’t have to look at the odd dwarf proportions in the game (the women have arms for days). Mostly I have armour mods. I like Grey Wardens of Ferelden so I can match Alistair in the final batte and have everyone in uniforms in Awakening. I do like Kirkwall Exports because I can put Zevran in the robes of the notorious pirate tho. I haven’t used this mod yet but I also love this mod I retweeted this morning.
DA2 - Again, I don’t mod 2 very much. You could probably make some kind of chart for correlating my enjoyment of a game versus my urge to mod it, with the more I love a game means I want to mod it more. With 2 I enjoy the combat and overall design of the characters more so I mostly use a couple of tweaks, my favourite is Ishs Scarf for Merrill which just adds a cute blue scarf to Merrill and hides the fact that elves in this game have weirdly long necks. Oh and a mod to fix the weird hand dirt.
DA:I - Equal Opportunity Solas mod, I bought the game again on PC just to use it. Being able to play Solas/Ian for screencaps was everything tbh. Other mods I enjoy are More Banter, which while I have better luck with banter it is nice to be able to count on it. I installed it this latest pt and I have heard location comments that have never triggered before. Black Hair for Everyone has changed my life because finally Thora doesn’t have grey hair. No Dirt Buildup is also amazing, as the dirt can cause some really weird blotting on PCs that’s especially noticeable on dark-skinned Inquisitors.
99. Where would you live (Ferelden, Orlais, Free Marches etc?) | asked by @heysales
Probably Ferelden. It is fantasy England and hey if I make it past Inquisition maybe nothing will ever happen there again. Somewhere in the Free Marches might also be chill. Not Kirkwall. Maybe Starkhaven? Honestly tho I just want to live in the Frostback Basin. Have a spirit friend. Shake hands with nugs.
101. If you could meet your Warden/Hawke/Inquisitor, what would you say? | asked by @dreamerlavellan
If I met Thora I’d tell her I’m proud of her. She’d be confused, but that’s ok.

MUN QUESTIONS.
Q1 : If you could write your character your way in their own movie,  what would it be called, what style would it be filmed in, and what would it be about?
A1 :  Listen, I shamelessly love YA dystopian fiction, so it would be something in that vein, where Alannah is OP as fuck running around and blowing shit up as the young heroine main focus. Also there’s all of the romance tropes (sandwiched between developmental angst, of course), because I like them, and nobody’s allowed to bitch about it.
Q2 :  What would their soundtrack/score sound like?
A2 :  It would be scored by a collaboration of Two Steps From Hell, Hans Zimmer, Jeremy Soule, and Zack Hemsey, and my ears would orgasm.
Q3 :  Why did you start writing this character?
A3 : I don’t like doing the whole “my character is just me or an extension of me” thing, it just never feels right. I also can’t just look at the avatar I’m using and see nothing but pixels and just “play the game.” She has to have a personality, a backstory, a reason for what she’s doing. Also it’s a great creative outlet for me because I love coming up with stories in my head as I go. And thus Alannah was born from the soup of inspiration made up of many various characters I’ve loved over the years.
Q4 :   What first attracted you to this character?
A4 : She was supposed to be something new, a kind of character that I’ve never written before. All of my female characters end up badass, overpowered, and full of personal angst, because that’s just my thing. And yeah, Alannah’s reached that point, but the point is I tried.
Q5 :  Describe the biggest thing you dislike about your muse.
A5 : I feel like I can never get her voice right, she always just ends up sounding like me.
Q6 :  What do you have in common with your muse?
A6 :   The longer she’s around, the more of my traits she absorbs by osmosis. At this point she shares like 80% of my personality and traits and is completely unrecognizable from my original concept for her.
Q7 :   How does your muse feel about you?
A7 :   I am a generous god.
Q8 :  What characters does your muse have interesting interactions with ?
A8 :   My favorite thing to explore, if it isn’t grossly obvious, is her different relationships with each of her siblings, probably because I have none.
Q9 :  What gives you inspiration to write your muse ?
A9 : Mostly music and books, sometimes games. I have so many AUs for Alannah. Actually writing things, however, is another matter entirely.
Q10 : How long did this take you to complete ?
A10 : I had it done by the end of the work day after working on it between things I had to do, but then SOMEBODY tumblr drafts had to blow it up so I had to start over from the halfway point. I am not amused.

Carnival Row - SPOILERS
Tumblr media
I wanted to enjoy Carnival Row and in some ways I did, but when it comes to the better fantasy show this weekend, it has to go to the Dark Crystal, which I’ll talk a little bit about, but no spoilers on that.
SPOILERS FOR CARNIVAL ROW BELOW
Pacing was a problem.  Sometimes it was too rushed other times too slow depending on what plot line they were on.  To be honest, I felt that maybe we were supposed to get more episodes to really flesh out the world and characters, but Amazon decided to go with less episodes.
The Dark Crystal didn’t have this problem as it was a full ten episodes with three plots that interwoven together into one larger plot.  Another advantage the Dark Crystal had was it had plenty of lore and world building to draw on.
Tumblr media
Carnival Row, being an original series that isn’t based upon a previous franchise, film, books, or comics, has to start from scratch.  Now this has served well in other franchises such as Charmed (original series), Supernatural, Xena Warrior Princess, etc but those shows were able to take the time necessary to build up their respective worlds and lore.
Granted Carnival Row only had 8 episodes to establish itself and that may be a handicap, but what bothered me is that fae creatures behaved like humans but with wings and horns.  Granted, this was used as a means to show that fae are no different than humans, but that’s the thing, they aren’t human.  Or not suppose to be.  Other than their physical appearance they didn’t have any distinguishing mannerisms.
Tumblr media
Let’s take a look at Mass Effect races for example.  The Asari, beautiful blue alien that are all female are the diplomatic and wise.  Turians are militaristic and disciplined.  Salarians are geniuses and tech-wizards and scientists.  Each race has an overall background, history, and mannerisms that set them apart from each other and humans.
The same could be said for Star Wars, Dragon Age, Lord of the Rings, and Babylon 5.  With Carnival Row, other than appearance, I couldn’t differentiate between fairies, fauns, and others.  Were the fauns warriors or laborers?  Fairies, were they artists or scholars?  And they barely touched upon the rest of the fae that we’ve seen.  Again, I understand the first season was only 8 episodes, but that may be the problem in itself.
It felt like we were only getting part or half of a season.  Sometimes the pacing felt rush and characters that were introduced were just as quickly dismissed or forgotten.  The Ravens that Vignette join only appear for a few episodes, enough to menace Vignette and then are forgotten.  Philo’s friend who I’m assuming was locked away for being a werewolf (if that’s the reason, then they didn’t make it clear), what part did he have to play?  Even Portia, Philo’s human love interest who dismissed once she serves her purpose.  (Hated her guts for what she did to him, bitch).
Tumblr media
It feels like there were originally suppose to be more episodes, but Amazon either say do less or they split the season in half and we’re getting the other half in season 2.  When the season ended, I didn’t feel satisfied, but I wanted to see more.
That being said, when season 2 comes out, I’m going to watch it.  My experience is that if a new tv series (especially one with it’s own world) doesn’t have mettle the first season, the second season usually brings it.  First season is introduction, world building, and getting to know the characters and second season is where you can really sink your teeth into the world.
This season also felt like they were setting up the villains for next season with Jonah and Sophia using the political hot spots with the fae to gain power.  Philo learning there is a prophecy about him becoming a great and powerful leader.  And the faun cult causing problems.
Do I think season 1 is bad?  Honestly, no, I think it’s okay.  It doesn’t misrepresent itself and it’s exactly as advertised though some people are claiming Amazon said it was a PG-14 rating when someone tried to watch it with their children they were shocked by the F-bombs?  What about the gore and nudity and sex?
It has some really cool moments that I enjoyed such as Philo learning that the first murder victim is actually his mother and him confiding to Vignette that he’s half-fae.  Those were really eye opening moments for me and drew me back into the story despite its flaws.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to season 2 and I really hope they bring it by then.

Reading List 2019
So I thought to celebrate the fact that I actually read 100 books this year, I could list them all, give them a short raiting and quickly summarise my thoughts (as far as I remember them, my memory is terrible). So strap in, this is gonna be a looong list.
(The formating is gonna be: Title, Author, Language I read it in (D = German; E = English), rating, short thoughts)
1. The Toymakers, Robert Dinsdale, D, 3/5, Wants to be The Nightcircus but fails. Still sweet and thoughtful.
2. Deadly Sting (Elemental Assassin 8), Jennifer Estep, D, 4/5, Don’t remember specifics just that I was impressed the series was still this good.
3. The Labyrinth of Magic Volume 1, Shinobu Ohtaka, D, 1/5, Note to self: I don’t like Mangas (The Anime is fantastic though).
4. The Labyritnh of Magic Volume 2, Shinobu Ohtaka, D, 1/5, See 3.

Over a month ago, I was talking about Onyx Path‘s sales venues and things like that. Just kind of getting folks caught up on where they could find our stuff and which projects you could find there.
A different, but similar, thing that I wanted to touch on today is some of the other sorts of projects we have to offer beyond book-shaped things. Specifically, because Mighty Matt McElroy sent me some pics of the proofs for a couple of card projects, I’m going to touch on those today.
(Never mind that I haven’t received my card proof samples yet…sob.)

There are two types of card-based projects that we have been creating. The first, are card games. We don’t do a lot of them, as we need to see a clear connection to whatever TTRPG they are derived from or it’s tough to put effort towards them when there are books to be created.
Right now, we have Justin Achilli’s Prince’s Gambit for Vampire: The Masquerade, which we saw as a fun political machinations game that is waaay shorter than a VTES match. Something to play while waiting for your RPG or LARP session to start up.
And Fetch Quest for Realms of Pugmire, which has shipped to Kickstarter backers, should be available to order and in stores in May, and which we are waiting for the PoD proofs for. This is a cooperative card game set in the wilds around Pugmire that complements the TTRPG.
In fact, we’re looking to have the option for folks to make their own cards via DriveThruCards, so folks can play their TTRPG characters.
You might have noticed that the part of DriveThru that deals with these sorts of things is DriveThru Cards, which is a different Print on Demand company than the one who does our books. Everything still all goes through DTRPG, or OBS as it’s corporately known, but the card guys have their own little differences in how they proof, etc.
We’ve been really happy with the quality of their cards, and that’s one of the reasons we have made both the games, and the second type of card projects we put together: roleplaying aids. These can be the extensive selection of Charm Cards for Exalted 3rd, or Condition Cards for our CofD games, or Trick Cards for Pugmire, and more.
Pugmire also has Spell Cards, and right now we are proofing Spell Cards for the Scarred Lands that can be used for a SL campaign, or worked into any 5e fantasy roleplaying session.
If you’re saying, “Hey, what is this here Scarred Lands you keep going on about, Mr. Rich?“, then you should give a listen to last Friday’s Onyx Pathcast where our terrific trio take a Deep Dive into the Scarred Lands setting, and highlight the things that they think really work. Link below in the Blurbs!.
They do a fantastic job of conveying what they love and are intrigued by in Scarred Lands, which is actually really interesting to me, as a guy who helped create it way back in the crazy d20 Rush days. None of our Trio were around then, so to hear them go over the parts that compel them about our new edition and the first one, is kind of like hearing a whole new generation finding it.
Makes me feel both old and proud, by crackee!

Finally, to wrap up the Scion Errata situation I touched on the last couple of weeks, Neall, in his non-real-world-job time, was able to assemble and create a list of the corrections that he had made but which hadn’t stuck. We turned that into a downloadable PDF (in both full-color and easy to print versions) for any and all to get ahold of, and input the corrections and the backer credits into the PDF and the upcoming PoD files.
When all was said and done, there is a page of Scion: Origin errata, a page of Scion: Hero errata, a page for a FAQ Neall put together, and ten updated pre-generated character sheets. For perspective, Neall’s original list derived from backer input from all over the internet was well over 300 entries (many of them duplicates) across the two books so the vast majority of the fixes worked – except for a page per book’s worth.
While we wanted all of the errata we painstakingly gathered and collated to have stuck as we intended, and we’ve changed a couple of processes to try and make sure that when a change is made it by-gum sticks, we’re just glad that none of them were so bad that they wrecked the books and made them impossible to read and play.
As Neall noted in a message to the backers, we’re disappointed that the projects aren’t as polished as we intended, and we apologize to all involved for disappointing you too.
We will do better, as we continue to create:

Q&A: Lessons from Dragon Age 2
regarding your latest dragon age analysis, you state that dragon age used to be great at one point. while i agree, and origins is still one of my favorite video games of all time story-wise, i would like to know if this is actually your opinion or just what i want to hear? because i personally think that in the latest game they really lost track of what made the past games really good, but I’m not sure if that’s your opinion.
It’s not. I found Origins underwhelming, with both design, writing, and business decisions that I’d call questionable at best. The business decisions fall well outside the scope of this blog, and I covered my issue with the game design last week.
I realize it’s a dark horse in the fandom, but the only Dragon Age game I really like is 2.  The writing does a couple things very well, giving the game a truly unique flavor from the rest of Bioware’s releases. That’s kind of the problem. So, there’s four things discuss, that are worth taking a moment.
Dragon Age 2 does a good job with shades of gray morality. In most Bioware titles, it’s easy to identify the good/evil dynamic. To borrow a phrase, your choices split between being a saint, or eating babies. That’s not true in DA2. The game presents you with a lot of situations where both sides have legitimate positions, and you’re left with some difficult choices. This can easily leave you feeling like, no matter which way you went, you’d made a mistake. There’s a true to life quality to this, and it fits well with the overarching tone the game is following, but if you came here for a conventional power fantasy, the game shanks you at almost every turn. This is something that Origins claimed it would do, but 2 delivered, and the community’s reaction was less than enthusiastic.
It’s story and setting are serious, it’s characters aren’t. Origins and Inquisition both inject their humor into the events around the characters. Sometimes these are the result of character action, but often these jokes are delivered deadpan by the world. This is a familiar beat in tabletop roleplaying games, where the GM chooses to be a smart ass for a second, but it’s incongruous with the setting that the development team was trying to sell.
DA2 doesn’t do this, nearly as much. Most of the humor there comes directly from the characters responding to the horrific events around them. Again, there’s an uncomfortable truth to this kind of behavior; humor is often a defense mechanism. It’s a way to deal with things that are too horrible to deal with. In contrast to a normal heroic story, this is an arc of people falling apart, or struggling against it. There’s a corrosive quality to the events story, where characters simply trying to survive and cope with the things they’ve seen. This can leave you with the impression that these are truly horrible people, and over the course of the story, a few of the recurring characters become far less palatable than they were at the beginning.
It violates audience expectations from the developer. This isn’t automatically a good thing, and the fan reaction can probably serve as a warning against this kind of behavior. DA2 is very critical of the normal Bioware game, to the extent that it’s almost an inversion. Your character starts in a relatively stable city surrounded by loyal friends and family, but as the story progresses, the city falls to ruin, the friends and family start to scatter or die. While Hawke, the protagonist, becomes more politically important, they become more disconnected and isolated. The opening cutscene even tells you, this isn’t the story of how a scrappy hero arrived to save the day, it’s the story about how someone who tried to make things better served as a catalyst for the unspoken chaos that followed. This is more in line with authors like Michael Moorcock than Bioware’s normal stable.
If you picked up 2 after playing Origins,  you’d be greeted by a mostly unfamiliar setting. There are some superficial similarities, the game’s prologue and first chapter play out during the events of Origins, however, almost immediately the tone is unrecognizable, for a number of reasons. First, and foremost, Dragon Age 2 is in a completely different fantasy genre from every other game in the series.
I mentioned Michael Moorcock earlier, and there are some hints of Elric of Melniboné in Dragon Age 2, but the major influence, visible up front, is Lankhmar. From Fritz Leiber’s Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser stories, the city of Lankhmar was a fantasy pastiche of contemporary New York City. The strange confounding, almost ungovernable mess should be immediately familiar to any player who spent any time wandering Kirkwall in Dragon Age 2. The similarities aren’t just in the architecture or denizens, but in the borderline feral quality that resists governing. Leiber’s opportunistic rogues are also instantly recognizable as kindred spirits for Hawke and party. Even the narrative structure of the game, as multiple semi-connected vignettes is very reminiscent of the short stories. There’s still a lot of Warhammer here, but it’s marinating with a diverse array of influences, and the result is something completely different.
There are some major flaws. Some critical exposition for understanding what’s going on in the city are buried in an unmarked collectible sidequest, leaving many players with the impression that the events happened for no reason. (This may have been impossible to complete on some platforms due to a bug, making things worse.) The ending is rushed, probably owing to an abbreviated development cycle.
In spite of how the community rejected Dragon Age 2 at the time, I think it’s probably the single best example of writing from Bioware. I can understand the people who didn’t like the gameplay experience. I can understand the people who felt betrayed. They were promised a specific kind of experience, and were delivered something unexpected and, at times downright vicious. Personally, I still prefer something that takes risks, and commits, more than a writer that plays it safe, even when it doesn’t quite work out. Also, the sarcastic personality was shockingly close to my outlook on Dragon Age after playing Origins, so that probably helped a bit.

Video game meme!
@scatteringmyashes tagged me knowing full well I haven’t finished many video games in my life /side eyes/, but here it goes. The following are my top 4 video games that have impacted my life / left big impressions on me / that I think y’all should check out if you can! See below for cute pics and more <3
Tumblr media
1. Kirby and the Amazing Mirror
Y’all, I can’t even begin to describe the amount of childhood nostalgia I’m feeling just from this gif. Arguably the first video game I ever completed, this game for the Game Boy Advance was my constant companion. Cute little ball of a fighter? Check. Dark and mysterious forces that needed stopping? Yes. Ridiculous amounts of different abilities you could choose from? Mmmhmm. Option to call in your colorful cohort of friends and have cute victory dances with them? Check+. Magic mirrors???? Yup. I unfortunately lost this game in a move when my sister misplaced my Game Boy and it was never seen again :( But one of my dreams is to play it again on a Navy blue Game Boy once more <3
Tumblr media
2. Harvest Moon: Magical Melody
Nostalgia train again, sorry not sorry. You’re the cute new rancher in a cute small town just trying to get by and... save the Harvest Goddess??? That’s right! Like most Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons games you’re balancing farm life, sleep, socializing, romance, and saving the Harvest Goddess with music notes you get through achievements. My longest friend introduced me in 6th grade (thanks Charissa!!!) and even helped be get a game cube to have my own copy! We would help each other plan out our work days and weddings on our respective memory cards for good wholesome fun <3 Very straight (unfortunate for my queer fam), but funnily enough the rival, Jamie, is androgynous most of the time and will “switch gender” based on the PC, which only really shows if you marry them. (P.S. Marry Dan the “learning to improve himself what a cutey” Pirate, ilovehim).
Tumblr media
3. Transistor
I cannot begin to describe how beautiful this game is. Art Deco meets posh cyber dystopia in this world filled with robots out to kill you, a gorgeous singer without a voice taking on a terrorist organization. Did I mention your weapon and narrator are the downloaded conscious of the boyfriend who saved you? Your voice and him get tied up in an assassination plot on you, leading to your wielding of a strange weapon -- the Transistor. I love the voice lines, the plot, the art, THE MUSIC is INCREDIBLE please listen to it as you play, the strategy mixed with time freezing capabilities, and option to mix fighting styles based on... well you’ll see. It’s just a gorgeous game and I fell in love with this couple and their sudden struggle so hard. Here’s another image to show my love:
Tumblr media
ANYWAYS
Tumblr media
4. Dragon Age II
Look, Isabella was like half the gifs that showed up for this game it’s not my fault... I also have a thing for pirates? Maybe it’s the rough, sea breeze tousled, golden ensemble. Dragon Age as a series is just so good. I love fantasy, and RPGs, and playing mages. AND ROMANCE. wow. Though we have differing opinions on the world and its politics, @scatteringmyashes is the one that introduced me to this game and the DA series in consequence. Though I may be terrible at decision based games, I do love this one a lot. Everyone is kind of a disaster (witty NPCS and yourself) and there aren’t a lot of solvable problems, but as the Champion of Kirkwall you take the city by storm anyways. If you like dialogue options, shopping, fighting, political intrigue, party banter and quite the diverse / talented fandom definitely play this game. I myself am hoping to one day play origins and inquisition, too! (Who knows, maybe another will ride me into the sunset.)
I’m tagging... uhhh... @koragg1 @lixyjoy @zirobo and @gakarian sorry i don’t make the rules.

Monsters, Magic and Mythology, Oh My!
Hello Readers! Let’s start with a simple introduction, shall we? I go by Trubidore, or Trubi, as is my tag. Clearly, there is the future option of going by first names should the OOC chat develop, until then however, Trubi is just fine.  Who am I? Well, besides being a 19 year old female RP'er, I’m a student from Britain looking for a little something to occupy my spare time. What’s my style? It is, and shall forever be, multiple paragraph posts written in third person, past tense (the latter may be negotiable, if the plot demands a present tense style). Though I would never expect my partners to spew out the same amount as myself when it comes to post sizes, I do tend to overwrite when I really get into a plot or character, and thus you will be expected to read everything I write, even if its just scanning, because there is nothing more infuriating than a partner not reading all my hard work, and then asking questions that I’ve answered in my post! Aha… How often am I available?Even though I’m a student, I have a fairly flexible schedule, and even on my most busy days (which tends to be a Tuesday), I will always endeavour to reply at least once, usually more, or let my partner know if I can’t for whatever reason (and let me assure you, it better be a good damn reason!). What am I looking for?A good question, a good question indeed. But I’m not really sure of the answer myself! Both a fan of Fandom and Original RP’s, I’m generally open to any sort of ideas, and love to brainstorm with my partner(s). A common rule, however, is that I will always play an OC, even in Fandoms, although am more than willing to play Canon characters as side characters!  Fandoms~ Those highlighted in bold are ones I’m especially interested in! -> Harry Potter ~ Can be Golden Trio or Marauder Age; set in or out of Hogwarts. I’d especially like to delve into the Magical Beasts/Races too, and Politics of the broken Wizarding World, but I am generally open for any sort of plot; I’m a die-hard fan. -> MCU ~ Can be Avengers, X-Men, Deadpool, Doctor Strange, Spiderman, etc. You get the hint! Any sort of superhero setting is a fun setting in my eyes. -> DC ~ Much like the one above; love DC, but would especially like to explore the Villains over the Heroes. -> Dragon Age ~ Doesn’t matter which game in the series, I’ve played and loved them all. Though, given the choice 2 and 3 are my preferences - how could I ever say no to a spicy bit of Varric?  -> Dark Hunters ~ Not sure if there are any of you readers out there, but if you are lurking about, message me! I love this series, and the entire premise is right up my alley. ->Boku No Hero Academia ~ Great Anime, not as caught up as I should be but can easily get to the point you want me at. -> Fairy Tail ~ Even better Anime, although again have not finished the series. -> Borderlands ~ Oof, amazing game. Played them all, would love to explore that universe in detail. -> Grisa Series ~ Again, not sure if there are any readers of this series here, but if so, it’s a great world to put characters in. -> Feel free to ask about other Fandoms, there’s probably too many that I’ve forgotten right now. Original Plots~ Those highlighted in bold are ones I’m especially interested in! -> Fantasy -> Modern -> Sci-Fi -> Medieval -> Ancient Setting (Such as Greece, Rome or Egypt) -> Mythology -> Romance (MxM, FxF, MxF, will play any and all) -> Horror -> Smut -> Slice of Life -> Action -> Dystopia/Apocalyptic  -> Feel free to suggest any others, as I said I’m open to nearly everything! If there are any more details you need from me, feel free to ask! I’m a nice person, I don’t bite (unless you’re into that stuff, aha). Contacts~ Contact me through my email, but I’m willing to move onto other platforms if this makes you more comfortable!  Email: [email protected]
Sorry for the super long post, lets hope I didn’t scare too many of you away!

10 anime staples integral to anime
Ignoring Buzzfeed’s focus on whatever’s popular right now; I decided to throw together a list of 10 anime that, regardless of anything, are shows considered mandatory if you are someone who watches anime.
Even at my old job, it seemed the only thing people had any focus or knowledge of was what had come out in the last 3 - 5 years. And ignoring my feelings about modern anime, this is not an accurate reflection of anything to do with the medium. And if you tried to discuss “anime” as a topic, you’ll find yourself very quickly being completely out of touch with other people who watch anime. Unless you ONLY focus on a specific fandom for one specific show.
But Some anime ARE staples of the medium. And regardless of personal taste, animation quality,  how dated they might be now or popularity, some anime remain staples. And if you’re someone whose “Never Seen Anime” like the Buzzfeed article would like to suggest, you’ve got a much better chance looking to the titles that make up the foundation of the anime “fandom” than looking at whatever came out in the last 5 years or what’s trending on twitter or whatever the kids are into these days;
I chose these based on this. Not on my personal taste, or even popularity. But purely on their presence in the anime realm as a whole. I’ll even admit I might not even like all of these... But they remain staples. And even if you don’t sit down and watch them, you are required by anime law to at least know OF them.
1: Akira (1988)
The big one. EVERYONE knows about Akira. People who don’t know anything about anime know about Akira. People who don’t know about Akira have SEEN images and iconography from Akira.
Heck I don’t even like Akira that much. I don’t even think it’s that well adapted into a movie.
But I have seen Akira.
EVERYONE has seen Akira.
Tumblr media
2: Cowboy Bebop (1998)
Almost always in the top 3 of people’s “top 10 favourite anime” lists, if not number 1. But Cowboy Bebop is not merely a “popular” anime. Often cited as being better dubbed than in its original sub, Cowboy Bebop is a medley of different genres, mostly inspired by Westerns, Gangster movies, as well as Jazz and Blues. Cowboy bebop is an anime anyone can access, even if they have little to no exposure to anime. Cowboy Bebop is very very easy as a starting point. But also has some of the most three dimensional flawed characters you’ll find in anime if not most television. Cowboy bebop succeeds because of its humanity.
Tumblr media
3: Trigun (1998)
Often coming hand in hand with Cowboy Bebop if for no other reason than the fact that they premiered in the same year and both share a strong influence by Westerns. Trigun might not have the gut-punch existentialism of Cowboy Bebop, but is still considered one of the best animes released. A weird mix of Westerns, Mad max and sci fi, Trigun succeeds based entirely on its main character, Vash. Trigun as a show is more than anything a character study, as well as being a commentary on just how hard it can be to be a pacifist and how much courage it takes NOT to shoot, rather than glorify violence, and equate “bad ass” with killing.
Tumblr media
4: Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995)
*siiiiiiiiiiigh* Ok... So here’s the thing;
Eva is the black hole of anime. There is no escaping Eva. For better or worse, Eva is an all encompassing cloud over all of anime. And pretty much was the second it aired on Japanese TV. What started as a “giant robot” anime that explores how much being in a giant robot can mess up a kid (not new to Eva, in fact this is pretty much the basis for the first Gundam anime) but quickly devolved into a monster of a show. Its creator... well.... kinda lost his mind as the show went on. And it showed... it showed HARD.
The show went from a dark giant robot anime into an existential nightmare, exploring doomed characters in an apocalyptic situation as humanity slowly tumbled towards its destruction. Mixed with the main character, a truly hateful person who was written specifically to BE hateful, and his broken psychosis, the trauma of puberty, deep and inescapable depression, and his reaction to the people around, all of who also are written to be unlikable at least to a point if not completely detestable.
And then on TOP of this, Gainax (the studio) decided to use Christian visuals to give the anime a “stylistic edge” among the rest of anime being released at the time. Not considering the implications the Christian iconography would have for the western audience once it released overseas.
It reached a boiling point climax with the last two episodes in the series taking place entirely in the main character’s mind. This causing many insane fans of the show to send the director death threats for “disappointing” them. And then LATER causing an entire movie to be made called “the end of Evangelion” which was the ACTUAL end of the story... And now there’s like new movies being released as well to this very day and I have no idea how they even fit into this whole mess?
But Eva is a neutron star, collapsing in on itself. And it doesn’t matter if you love Eva, hate Eva, or are completely indifferent to it. There is no escaping Eva.
It changed anime forever. And there’s nothing that can be done about that.
Tumblr media
5: Mobile Suit Gundam... like.... ANY Gundam. (1979 - current)
I can’t remember where I heard it, but someone once described the level of impact Gundam has and the level of fantacism from its fans as being the Japanese equivalent to Star Trek. And really that’s the best way to describe it. Starting in 1979, Gundam took the “Giant Robot” concept and instead turned it into an allegory for War. Gundam, regardless of which series you watch/read is always a mix of Shakespearean drama and the horror of war.
Hell, This is a... THING so important to Japanese culture that the country decided to build a LIFE SIZE replica of one. Part of Japan’s Self Defense forces are codenamed “Gundam”!
Probably a little difficult to approach as a westerner, but one should at least be AWARE of Gundam if nothing else.
Tumblr media
6: Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) or Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (2009)
In my mind FMA is still a “recent anime”, but seeing it actually aired in 2003, I guess I can’t make that statement any more. FMA is a series that, despite being insanely popular when it first came out, only started gaining traction as a real “Classic” within the medium after its second adaptation “brotherhood” probably finished. I’ve heard many people say Brotherhood is better, but having only seen the original, I can tell you if Brotherhood is better it’s probably one of the best damn anime ever made since FMA on its own was already no small contender.
I can probably blame this show as the start of my ongoing existential crises when I first watched it around 2004 or so.
A difficult one to pin down compared to the others. I think FMA has such lasting power because it’s a mix of a unique setting and ideas, has extremely strong world building, has a lot of political intrigue, but at the end of the day, just like Cowboy Bebop and Trigun, it’s its characters that keep it strong. Whether it’s the brotherly ties between Edward and Alphonse, or their relationships with the characters around them, or their loss and ways in which they’re prisoners to their past, or its the sheer weight of the drama, both personal and on a worldwide level that they go through. Something about FMA’s characters elevates it so far above so many anime, as well as its absolutely perfect story progression. I remember this is the first time I watched a show where, in the second or third act, I remember longing for the earlier episodes... where the characters were happier and life seemed so much simpler.
Whereas a few years ago I’d still be calling all this “popularity”... it’s getting to the point now where its long lasting impact can’t be ignored, and it deserves being recognised as a medium classic, rather than just “really popular”.
Tumblr media
7: Visions of Escaflowne (1996)
A weird one this. Visions of Escaflowne is a show that doesn’t come up in conversation as much as the others, but if you talk to anyone who’s more serious about their anime, they’ll be aware of it and know of it among the “classics”. Escaflowne is very similar to the shows above in that it mixes genres. It’s a “giant robot” anime, however it is unique in being a giant robot anime that takes place in a fantasy setting. A setting one would more associate with mages and dragons, Escaflowne has those.... and then also giant robots. A mix of a much more western idea of fantasy, political drama, as well as a coming-of-age love story (with giant robots) and a fish-out-of-water story as our main character is a girl from contemporary Japan, caught up in this fantasy world’s politics.
Escaflowne was originally planned and written to be 39 episodes, but after a very difficult production time, it ended up being only 26 due to budget reasons. As a result however, there is VERY little time wasted in the show. Probably the only anime in existence where there literally was not a single second for any kind of “filler” because it had to condense its plot into the shorter frame. As a result, the show focuses only on the very most important points of its story, and its characters. No moment is wasted or feels like it’s just there for no real reason.
It’s a story that never puts on the brakes, because it simply cannot afford to. And for a show supposedly cut down due to budget... it damn well doesn’t LOOK like it’s got a small budget. damn.
Tumblr media
8: Ghost in the Shell (1995)
Another Big One.
Ghost in the Shell can probably be contributed as being one of the major forces that made the West take more notice of anime. Anime had been slowly creeping to the west since the 80s with VHS becoming more widespread, but Ghost in the Shell marked a point where people started realising there was more to Japan’s animation than “violent Porn Cartoons”. Although still not main stream, Ghost in the Shell was at least a major factor in making people realise that Anime had some serious weight to it.
I tend to describe Ghost in the Shell as more of an essay than a “movie”. Although it has a “plot”, the movie’s main focus is in exploring our main character, a cyborg called Major Motoko Kusanagi, and her struggle trying to grasp her own humanity. Or what is left of it. Being in a completely artificial body with only her brain surviving as her “human” part. The movie is primarily interested in her questions of whether or not she’s still human, and where exactly does the line for “human” begin and end.
Accompanied by a haunting musical score, often including traditional japanese religious chants, and Mamoru Oshii’s atmospheric direction, it’s gone on to be a major influence on most modern sci fi, as it itself was influenced very much by Blade Runner and continues with the themes set up by the Ridley Scott film.

9: Rurouni Kenshin (aka Samurai X) (1996)
Rurouni Kenshin has more in common with live action Japanese cinema than it does anime... to a point at least. Kenshin is, at its heart, a chanbara. That is, an anime (or film more typically) focusing on samurai in historical Japan. Kenshin however, has no interest in being 100% historical accurate, as a lot of its characters are inspired by arcade fighting games.
Also noteable, despite being a chanbara, Kenshin’s time setting is not the Edo period, but instead the Meiji period (roughly around 1868) a period of time where Samurai were starting to die out as Japan slowly opened its doors to the west and western development. During this period it was illegal for anyone apart from Police to carry swords any more, and the story takes place a few years after what is historically known as the Bakumatsu. A short but violent civil war marking the end of the Edo period and the beginning of the Meiji, where the Shogunate ended and the country returned to Imperial rule. A setting which is important not only for its world building but also for our main characters.
A mix of historical drama, and typical “shounen” beat the bad guy, a love story, a tragedy, a comedy and a lament for a time now lost, The Kenshin manga has not only been the source for the anime, but also 2 animated motion pictures, 2 OVAs, 2 live action movies (with a third I believe still coming), several stage plays, light novels as well as 5 video games.
Also the orchestral soundtrack (that is not the jpop used for the intros) is some of the best damn music television anime has ever had.
Also seriously this...

And this....

Are from the same story.
How am I suppose to find a single gif that can encapture all of the emotions in this show from the ridiculously silly to the soul crushing heartbreak???

10: Tenchi Muyo! (1995)
Tenchi Muyo is a weird one. Because Tenchi Muyo started out as an OVA, and even as an OVA its first episode is completely and utterly different from its last episode. Characters’ personalities in episode 1 seem completely different to every other episode. That’s because they were basically writing this show as they went along. And yet, through sheer grace of its characters and its setup, Tenchi Muyo is not only a staple of anime today, but has a hardcore fanbase and countless adaptations into other anime series, OVAs, light novels, Video Games, Audio Dramas, movies and manga.
So what is it? Well, technically, as in TECHNICALLY it’s a harem anime. A harem anime is typically about a single “everyman” male main character who finds himself living together with several female characters through weird circumstances. Usually its typified that there’s a chance that ANY of the female characters will end up with the main boy character, but there’s usually also a “main” girl character who the audience more or less knows he’ll end up with. It’s kinda a weird cousin of the dating sim video game genre I guess.
But so what? Why is Tenchi so special then? Well... mainly because its female cast are all fucking nuts, and ALL of them are amazing characters with really strong personalities, backs stories and agendas. Also they’re all aliens.
You have a Space Pirate queen, an alien princess and her little sister, a mad scientist, 2 police-women set to CAPTURE the space pirate queen, a literal Goddess, and a weird cat-rabbit creature.
Also, this isn’t some domestic “let’s all be perfect wives for our man” anime. The characters are constantly attacked by aliens trying to achieve one thing or another and there’s usually a lot of fighting and stuff.
....
The literal Translation of the title is “No Need for Tenchi.”
And really I couldn’t have put it any better myself.
Tenchi Muyo is also considered a staple since it was one of the first anime to play on Cartoon Network’s “Toonami” back in the day, and therefore was a lot of people’s introduction to anime as a whole.

CONFESSION:
The difference in graphics, play style, and the overall aesthetic in all 3 games makes me love the series even more. I love how Origins is like a dark, medieval fantasy RPG, where you're struggling and desperate for nearly the whole game. Then dragon age 2 was more lighthearted and colourful (but also pretty sad). Then inquisition is like an inspirational story of politics. It makes me feel like I'm playing 3 totally different games and I love it.

The lovely @ferociousqueak called me out tagged me to talk about my to do list.
List all the things you’re currently working on in as much or as little detail as you’d like, then tag some friends to see what they’re working on. This can be writing, arts, gifsets, whatever.
Fanfic
Any Four Walls -- sorry about all those cliffhangers; next chapter’s already underway. (And I posted one over the last weekend, if you missed it.)
A Handful of Dust -- I made a list the other day of all the loose ends I feel I need to tie up. Then I cried. Then I put my big girl panties on. Or tried to. It’s a work in progress. Ha ha. Ha.
Unshaken by the Darkness -- my Cullen alphabet; I still have so many ideas for this, but I’m sorta kinda trying to focus on things one at a time, fanfic-wise and my brain’s currently a little more Mass Effect-y than Dragon Age-y. That’ll eventually flip.
I’m not sure yet what, if any, fic will come out of Andromeda, but I think there are some ficlets, at least. I’m playing my “canon” playthrough now, so that may illuminate.
I’m not finished writing about either Rose Trevelyan or Grace Shepard, actually, I just don’t have concrete WIPs to report. It feels like 100000 years since I have done a prompt meme, so probably I’ll think about that as an infusion of short-fic/ficlet joy. At some point.
Original:
@w0rdinista and I are working on our edits. Sorta kinda. It’s on my radar. Distance and focus are not currently cooperating with my brain.
Original novels in progress: Angelbook; Madeleine
Original novels in progress that may never actually progress: LA Book; Mama Magpie; Anna Karenina
Original novels in need of rewrite/edit/rebirth/burial?: Nocturne; Raisa 1 & 2; Beauty and the Beast retelling; Esalynne (& Sequel) ((Maybe))
Original novels in idea form: Raisa #3; Politics-y Space Opera; Fantasy novel growing out of seeds planted on trips to both Iceland and Italy; book 2 of the series Nista and I are writing
Original play about the boat and the deer. A couple of screenplays.
Other:
6 more weeks of The Artist’s Way!
I need to get a !%#$ing personal/professional calling card of a website up and running. This is more for the editing side of my professional life than the authorial, but they’ll overlap.
Overdue replies to asks.
Overdue replies to lovely AO3 comments.
Try harder to keep on top of my Patreon stuff. (To you precious $20/month people, I did send out massive envelopes full of stories; hopefully they showed up! <3)
Keep trying to hunt down editing contracts/gigs to help with the depressing money side of things.
I haven’t been around tumblr much lately, so I have no idea who’s done this. If you want to, please consider yourself called out tagged.

Steam Summer Sale Game Recs
Since the summer sale is on and I’ve gone a bit ham on it myself, I thought I’d rec some fun games. There’s some great games going for ridiculously cheap right now until the 5th of July, so have at it. These are in no particular order, but [*] marks my some of my absolute favourite games.
UNDER 5
[*]Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic ($2.49 | £ 1.74 | € 2.49)  - Fantastic story with traditional Bioware choice-based decisions, and awesome, memorable characters. This is a classic game and one of the greats. You don’t even need to be a Star Wars fan to enjoy it. It’s an old game, so it’d run on probably most low grade computers.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, The Sith Lords ($2.49 | £ 1.74 | € 2.49) - Sequel to the first game, and set five years after. This one is just as good as KOTOR, if not better. Be aware that its recommended that you download a mod that restores parts of the story and fixes bugs (found here).
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor - GOTY edition ($3.99 | £ 3.19 | € 3.99)  - Like a better version of Assassin’s Creed except in the world of LOTR.
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons ($1.49 | £1.09 | €1.49)  - this is criminally cheap for the heartwarming game this is. It’s not too long, as you can finish it in a few hours, but it’s good. Bear in mind you will have to have a controller to play this game as you use the analog sticks to control each brother.
[*]Dishonored ($2.49 | £1.99 | €2.49)  - A first person assassin/stealth game with an awesome story. Dishonored is one of my favourites and probably one of the best games out there. It’s highly optimised, so is pretty playable on most machines.
Fallout: New Vegas ($2.49 | £2.49 | €2.49) (Ultimate Edition: $9.99 | £7.49 | €9.99) - One of the best, if not the best fallout game. Awesome story with high replayability, and highly moddable.
[*]Life is Strange ($4.99 | £3.99 | €4.99) - A narrative, Telltale-like game with (yet again) a great story and characters. Warning: you will cry. Heavily. More than once.
[*]The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition ($2.99 | £2.24 | €2.99)  - Great game, and great introduction to the Witcher series. Much better story and controls compared to the first game, so don’t bother with that one. A medieval slavic fantasy in which you not only kill monsters but also get mixed up in political intrigue.
Saints Row IV: Game of the Century Edition ($4.99 | £3.74 | €4.99)  - insanely fun and hilarious GTA-like game. The moment ‘Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing’ by Aerosmith started playing as I tried to disarm a rocket in the first ten minutes, I knew this game was gonna be great. I also recommend Saints Row III  (Full Package: $3.74 | £2.74 | €3.74)
Apotheon ($3.74 | £2.74 | €3.74) - Do you like Greek mythology? Then this side-scroller is great. It’s simple, with fun combat, bosses, and all in a beautiful Ancient Greek vase art style.
Domina ($4.99 | £3.49 | €4.99)  - Wanna manage and even play as Roman gladiators? This is a short, pixel style game in which you can!
Kindergarten ($3.99 | £3.19 | €3.99)  - play as a kindergartner and solve a murder mystery while trying not to get killed yourself (yes, really). This is funnier and more light-hearted than it sounds.
Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna) ($2.99 | £2.39 | €2.99)  - Native American story written by Native Americans in partnership with the game studio that created it. It’s a beautiful puzzle platformer about restoring the balance of nature.
Reigns ($1.49 | £0.99 | €1.49)  - A simple card choice game in which you are damned by the devil to play the lives of every successive king and try to maintain your kingdom while unlocking more cards through your choices. I’ve had fun with it.
Portal 2 ($1.99 | £1.49 | €1.99)  - If you haven’t already got Portal 2, do yourself a favour. This is a fun game (great with friends) and it is ridiculously cheap.
UNDER 10
[*]Borderlands 2 - GOTY ($4.99 | £ 4.99 | € 7.49)  - This and Tales are two of my favourite games. It’s a fun scifi shooter that is great playing with friends or just alone. The characters, especially the villain are awesome and the whole thing is so well written (and hilarious). Plus since its GOTY you get all the DLC which is hours upon hours. Don’t bother with the first Borderlands, it’s rather dull compared to the sequel.
[*]Tales from the Borderlands ($6.24 | £ 4.74 | € 5.74)  - A telltale game set in the Borderlands world and after Borderlands 2. As a telltale game, it’s mostly a purely narrative game in which you control the character and the choices but don’t have to go shooting at stuff (95% of the time). It keeps the humour of the Borderlands games, and features great characters.
[*]Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition ($7.49 | £4.99 | €4.99)  - The first dragon age game is arguably the best. Good story, characters, and something you can sink your time into. It’s a good (and obvious) place to start the three game (so far) Dragon Age franchise.
The Walking Dead ($6.24 | £4.74 | €5.74)  - Another Telltale game (they’re great okay?) based on the Walking Dead series. This is one of Telltales best. Be prepared to cry. Also pick up Season 2 ($6.24 | £4.74 | €5.74)
The Wolf Among Us ($6.24 | £4.74 | €5.74)  - Well you might as well get this too. Though personally, Tales from the Borderlands will always be my favourite, the Wolf Among Us has been lauded as the best of the Telltale games and is pretty damn good.
[*]Final Fantasy VII ($5.99 | £4.99 | €6.49) - The most famous of the FF games and one that was pretty much my childhood. The nostalgia is unbelievably real. There are stories that stay with you, and this is one of them.
Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition ($6.79 | £5.09 | €6.79)  - One of the classic, defining games from which other fantasy games spawned. This is an old game, but the story is still amazing.
[*]The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion GOTY ($7.49 | £6.49 | €7.49)  - the precursor to Skyrim and just as good. There is a stupid amount to do in this game, not to mention the mod scene which is still alive and kicking.
UNDER 15
[*]Final Fantasy IX ($10.49 | £7.99 | €10.49) - Another of my favourite FF games, and in my opinion, one of the best. Definitely recommend.
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen ($11.99 | £9.59 | €11.99)  - an open-world RPG with lots of quests, story, character options and is damn fun.
Bioshock: The Collection ($14.99 | £9.99 | €14.99)  -  Bioshock is a great franchise, and with this pack you get BioShock Remastered, BioShock 2 Remastered, BioShock 2: Minerva's Den Remastered, BioShock Infinite, BioShock Infinite - Season Pass, and Bioshock Infinite: Columbia's Finest. Holy shit.
If anyone has any other recs, feel free to add them!
