We Can't Be Friends Song Reaction
Inspired by Ariana Grande's song: "We Can't Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)
hyung line version. Maknae Line Version
Warning: This is angsty and sad af, slight cursing, mentions alcohol, Minghao's has an Ice Spice lyric reference, hate comments, Mingyu's is a bit suggestive so respectfully: Minors fuck off and don't interact LMFAO. tbh this is more angsty and emotional than the hyung line and I'm only partially sorry.
A/N: using a song lyric as a prompt for each of the members. Decided to break this up from Hyung Line (Seungcheol - Jihoon) to Maknae Line (Seokmin - Chan). I already did 95/96 Line now it's time for the youngins. Like the hyung version, The parts are written in order from where the song lyrics show up. I tried to do different lyrics from the hyung line xo I hope you enjoy.
Tumblr media
✫ Seungkwan: "I don't wanna tiptoe, but I don't wanna hide. But I don't wanna feed this monstrous fire."
Neither of you ever wanted to admit how much of a dumpster fire Seungkwan and your relationship was becoming. However, it was. Day by day, it was becoming more and more clear your once perfect relationship was close to ending. You knew that Seungkwan wanted to make it work out and he truly thought it was just a bump in the road. However, you just knew it was time to end. Seungkwan and you were sat in his car in front of your house while the rain was pouring down and you just felt sick. You had called and told him that you wanted to talk but the words just wouldn't come out. You didn't want to hurt him but you also did not want to tiptoe and hide your true feelings anymore. With one look after an uncomfortable few minutes of silence, Seungkwan knew what was going on started to get teary eyed which made you teary eyed as well. "Kwannie, I'm so sorry but you know it's for the best. We had a good run." You managed to get out. Seungkwan did a shakey sigh before looking out the windsheild. "It was a great run, (Y/N), thank you for all the precious memories. I will always love you." "I will always love you too, thank you as well." After that, you braced yourself for the storm and for this next chapter of your new life. You opened the door and got out before running to your front door. You turned around as Seungkwan drove off and that was when you finally let go and finally broke down. You were so scared to enter this next chapter but you knew it was what you were supposed to do.
✫ Dino: "Wait until you like me again. Wait for your love."
You felt your heart shatter into a million pieces as Chan stood in front of you with a defeated look on his face. He could have said anything, but telling you that he's realized he's starting to fall out of love with you was probably the most devastating thing he could have told you. "When? What? Why?" was all you could say while trying your best to stay strong. You thought you both were golden. "I don't know, all I know is I want to keep loving you but it's just hard to." "I'm hard to love?!" "I didn't mean it like that, (Y/N)." "Then how did you mean it Chan?" Your voice finally cracked and then you looked away so he could not see you cry which absolutely broke his heart. "I- I don't know but--" you then just sighed then walked past him toward the door and opened the door for him. "Well until you know, here's the door. I rather not waste my time with someone who only pretends to love me." He started to walk toward you to give you a hug but you put your hand out so he wouldn't be able to touch you. "Don't you dare complicate this. Just come back when you know what you want. I will wait for you to try to like me again but I don't want to be there while you figure it out."
✫ Minghao: "Know that you made me, I don't like how you paint me, yet I'm still here hanging."
"(Y/N) only dated Minghao for 15 seconds of fame." "(Y/N) thinks they are the shit for dating Minghao. They're barely a fart." "Minghao could've done WAY better. There is more attractive people and he chose (Y/N)? God I'm so happy he finally got a brain and dumped her gold digging ass." Normally hate comments made you laugh. When Minghao and you were together and saw hate comments you both would giggle at how much time they were wasting while you were both just living your life and being in love. However, now that Minghao and you are no longer together the hate comments hurt. What hurt is that after the breakup, Minghao and his company did nothing to stop the comments. You both had a pretty clean and fair breakup so the fact that they just let the comments attack you felt unfair. Your company tried everything in their power to stop the comments with threatening lawsuits, to mass deleting comments, to offering to manage your socials so you wouldn't have to read it. The offer was nice but when you were welcomed with boo's and slurs when you went to an event you couldn't help but try to put on a brave face but mentally curse Pledis and Minghao. Also yourself for even agreeing to date Xu Minghao to begin with. Life would've been so much more peaceful if you never even knew his name.
✫ Mingyu: "Not what you made me, it's something like a daydream. But I feel so seen in the night."
It was supposed to be a one night stand. However, Mingyu and you developed an emotional non committed relationship and it was pretty nice. A little too nice. You knew it was a dangerous game to get this involved but you couldn't help it. Something about Kim Mingyu was so addicting. He was the best drug you could be addicted too. The way he made you feel so seen on your nightly adventures. That's why it hurt a little bit when you saw him out and about and he ignored you. As if you were only good enough for a fuck but not for a casual 'hello' in the daytime. It broke you when he came over two nights after the incident and he scoffed at your hurt. He had assumed you knew what this was. "Is this not enough, sweetheart?" no. No it was not. However, you couldn't bring yourself to admit it to him so at that moment you realized if you wanted anything to do with Mingyu, you had to play by his rules. No matter how bad it hurt.
✫ Vernon: "So for now, it's only me. And maybe that's all I need."
Hansol and you were so codependent for your whole relationship. You were with each other every second. You didn't have to talk, just being in each others presence was enough. Or so it was. One day, you both just grew apart. He started getting busy with Seventeen and you started getting more and more projects at work. The distance was affecting both of you but you both were too scared to say anything. That's when the fight happened and both of you wished you said something sooner because maybe... just maybe you both would be in each other's arms or sending each other cursed TikToks that plagued your FYP. However, neither of you did and you both were just too damn stubborn to say something. After suffering for what seemed like an eternity, you decided to try to explore independence a bit more. You took a much needed shower, and started to curl your hair and put on some makeup. As you were getting dolled up you did some daily affirmations. The more you told yourself, the more confident you were becoming. Maybe being solo for awhile was a good thing.
✫ DK: "My love, I'll wait for your love. I'll wait for your love."
Seokmin woke up in a cold sweat and looked around. He saw he was in an empty bed and the nightmare he had of losing you was way too realistic. He quickly stood up and called out your name but heard nothing back. His heart was racing when he heard the silence. Where were you? He rubbed his eyes and and looked around the room a bit more and that's when he remembered he was in a hotel room for a schedule. He sighed before laying back in bed and grabbing his phone. He squinted as the light hit his face and couldn't help but get teary eyed as he saw your smiling face smiling back at him. He loved you more than words could say. He said it constantly but that still didn't mean that you both weren't going through a rough patch. He didn't leave on the best conditions with you before he left and regretted it. Instinctively, he dialed your number and pressed the phone to his ear. He just needed to hear your voice. "Hey baby!" He heard your voice say which made him tear up even more. "Hi," he whispered while smiling. "Seokmin? Baby, are you okay?" A tear fell down his cheek as he heard the pet name for the second time and his fears were calmed a bit. "Seokmin?" "Oh yeah... Sorry I- I um, I'm sorry." "It's okay, baby... what's going on though?" He sighed before sitting up and telling you about his nightmare and how he just loves you so fucking much. This made you lean against the wall as you listened to him explain his fears and your heart broke at his anxiety. Sure when he left it was rough but that's relationships. Relationships aren't all sunshine and rainbows all the time. When you explained that you heard him sniffle which made you tear up. "Thank you, baby." He whispered. "Of course, love. I'll wait for you to come home. Five more days right?" "Yes, just Five more days." "I'll wait for your love, my love. I love you always." "I love you, always."
A/N: whoops I accidentally wrote a novel for Seokmin's. Pls don't hate me lmaooo

ok so ive been thinking of the pjo tv adaptation a lot and tbh (as for 3 episodes in) I'm a little disappointed so far. I think the actors are great and everything but the pieces feel slightly disjointed. something in production doesn't fit. and I was thinking about it a lot bc I love pjo and I wanted to see it on screen but then I realized that the book is the perfect method of telling that specific story (especially with Percy's narration and inner monologue)
SO I WAS THINKING
they could've done a show based off the books but not intended to be 100% accurate. like how greek myths have a million versions, they could've made a version better suited to a tv story telling. then you'd have the books, the movie, the musical and the tv all as different versions of the same story and its like percy has his own little myth yk.
(my personal vote would've been to make a more realistic [as in realistic way that teens act] pg-13 version kinda like a stranger things vibe but thats neither here nor there)

hi, love <3 so, here's a random thought I'd like to share with you.
I always mention how much I would've loved to see The Wolf instead of The original as a TVD spin off, but, even though my though I still stand this statement, I think it would've not been the same.
Let me elaborate:
as I said many times before, your writing is the key of the whole story. Since you always narrates things such as inner thoughts, feelings and point of views, we also get an explanation about why a certain thing is happening ( i.e. the ending smut of chapter 30). However, no matter how talented the actor is, this thing never happens in TV shows, and it sadly leads to misinterpretation (either of the character or their action) and "randomness".
For example: Caroline is my babygirl, but I just know that if people would've *watched* instead of *reading* The Wolf, they would've hated her. Calling her a bad s/o, mother and friend because they would just judge her by her actions without knowing what's going on with the characters, misinterpreting her struggle for bitchness or something along those lines.
In conclusion, even though I would pay MILLIONS to just erase TO and bring TW to live action, I'm also happy to know that my favs are "covered" from the hate they have already received because the shows never portrait them and their issues in the right way.
that's it, just wanted to share this piece of mind that have been floating around my head for a while! lemme know what you think!
Under the cut because I got rambly. 😂
That makes sense. Obviously books/fics/any written content will always be much more dense than TV shows or movies because you get to be inside characters' heads, while on TV content you can only count on actors finding a way to translate these emotions, and some of them don't even have that capacity tbh.
Not to say that The Wolf would've been better than the actual show (I mean, I have my biased opinions, but that's just me 😂), but I think the writing on The Originals obviously contributed a lot to how bad the show was a lot of the time. It simply lacked substance, there were many times when things just straight out didn't make sense. At first glance it might seem like TW and TO are almost interchangeable, but they're really not, and this is a point I have been making over the years. It's not just about the obvious changes (Caroline instead of Hayley, which is a BIG change btw), but it's especially about the more subtle ones. The amount of thought I put into those scenes, characters, dialogues - it might not seem like it, but it's crazy. And so if you read the final product and you think 'wow! this makes sense! it should've been like this!' it's because there were loads of changes done to not only that part, but parts that came before, that suddenly, when put together, paint things under a completely different light.
The problem with TO for me is that it starts off from a place of complete nonsense, so everything that comes after that is building on top of a fragile foundation. I mean, they start off the show by retconning every single character to a certain degree. What can we expect after that? They were more interested in erasing everything that came before on The Vampire Diaries than in doing justice to the characters, so there's no way that could've ever been 100% solid. It had its moments, I can't say that it didn't, but it was mostly scattered scenes here and there, or ideas you could see that were good in theory (like the premise of S3), rather than entire story arcs within the show.
My point is that I don't think the lack of inner monologuing is the main problem with TO. There is a way to have compelling and profound writing even when you don't have narration to compose your scenes, and the fact some screenwriters are incapable of doing that is the reason why so many book to TV adaptations are so crappy. You have to be really inventive to make it work, and the crew on TO simply wasn't. But there were moments!
However, regarding Caroline and the things she does throughout the story, like going back to Mystic Falls in TW2 for instance, or when she leaves the compound in TW1. Honestly, even if that had been written by the best screenwriter in the world (obviously not me), and if Candice King had given an Oscar-worthy performance, people would still call her a bitch. 😂 There's a real edge of misogyny in how people judge female characters a lot more harshly than their male counterparts, especially when the things they do displease the male character, which was the case here. I got so many comments from people who were mad at Caroline because 'she should've just trusted Klaus, Klaus is a hybrid, he's the strongest, he knows better', completely disregarding the fact Klaus is basically a psychopath with trust and anger issues who was by no means a pillar of warmth and sanity a lot of the time. Caroline was, from start to finish, the most reasonable, stable person in that entire story, but there were many times when people were blaming her for things that were just not her fault. She was pregnant, alone, scared, trying to stay alive, to protect her child, and Klaus was at the peak of a downward spiral where he was listening to absolutely no one, but somehow Caroline was the one in the wrong for not trusting that he wouldn't act like a maniac. 😂
I'm not saying that is what you're saying, btw, I'm just saying Caroline would've been judged no matter what. But yes, she probably would've been very harshly criticized if this had been the show. Already she is! There's a lot of people who dislike her for how hard she was on Klaus, like he didn't deserve it. 😂
Having said all that 😂 I do give myself some credit for the fact people were feeling so much for Klaus in spite of everything lol He's very intense and dramatic in how he takes offense. If he thinks he's been wronged (and he thinks he's been wronged whenever someone doesn't take his side in a dispute, whatever that might be), he just goes all out, and he's merciless in how he judges the people around him, alwaus making himself out to be the victmized party. He might regret his actions later (usually because of that darned little thing called consequence), but never initially, and he's also terrible at apologies. So I wanted his POVs to be about how the whole world was against him, and how he knew what he was doing, and he couldn't trust anyone, etc etc, and people bought it. Personally, I was always on Caroline's side, but even though I know people were likely to side with Klaus anyway because that's the way it is, and people are biased towards him, I also think I might have manipulated them a little bit.
But I just reminded myself today that there is a very basic difference between canon and TW that means one could never replace the other which is that Caroline is a witch. 😂 That justifies her getting pregnant, but then it changes her entire backstory.
I hope my response didn't come out as though I'm being harsh or anything. Your pondering just got me thinking, and that's actually something I've thought about a lot throughout the years because I have certainly gotten many comments like what you said. Thanks very much for sharing! I really love reading that kind of thing. ❤️

Tagged by the lovely @ghoulsbeard for a writing commentary exercise! Thank you so much, this was really fun! Tagging @coldshrugs @thevikingwoman @scionshtola and tbh I'm not sure who has or hasn't been tagged in this one... tagging all my writing friends please!! 🙌🏽💖
line(s) that made you laugh
“This pair claim to be enchanted to more easily spot nugs,” Alistair calls from the other end of the shop. “Could be useful.”
“How?” Hamal asks.
“If you have Sandal alter them to spot…”
“Traps?” Zevran asks.
“Darkspawn?” Leliana adds on.
“I can already sense those,” Hamal groans.
“The possibilities are endless,” Alistair says, quiet, awed, and mostly to himself.
- the reading stone
I don't write ensemble silliness often enough, and I had a lot of fun setting up this scene where they're all kind of goofing off. I fully believe that if you take the stress away from them for a moment they revert to dweeby antics.
line(s) that makes you sad
“I’m so glad you’re doing well. So tell me,” she scoots closer and looks at him eagerly, “What sort of life did you have, after you were adopted?”
“Adopted?”
By the kitchen counter, Hamal catches the subtle edge in Zevran’s tone. He pauses, holding the knife in his hand as a lull falls over the kitchen table, but he doesn’t know enough Antivan to guess what’s happened.
What’s happened is this: Zevran and Adelmar came from the same place, and know enough about that life to instantly understand that a lie has been told.
“Oh,” Adelmar breathes after a moment. “You… you weren’t adopted.”
Zevran lets out a laugh. It’s his ‘stalling’ laugh, and now Hamal is looking over, arms crossed, searching his face for clues.
“I was not adopted,” he says. “But do not trouble yourself over that.”
- not a homecoming, but something like it
It's obviously upsetting that Adelmar was lied to about what happened to Zevran, but I think in this moment they are both standing in the shadow of the life they could've had. Adelmar loved Zevran before the Crows ever touched him. The tragedy is, though, she was very much a child herself, so it's unfair to expect her to have been able to save him... but damn if she wouldn't have tried.
line(s) that you’re proud of
People think the desert is barren; the land harsh, the people unforgiving. They couldn't be more wrong. In all Refugio’s experience, scarcity creates generosity—not greed.
In the desert no one survives alone. It is a simple necessity to share resources, to freely give of one’s food and water and laughter. The desert gives people reason to band together. He’s never given it a second thought.
He remembers it fondly, how with each rainy season the desert comes to life.
People think the desert is barren. They don't know: the desert makes you kind.
- lovesong of the buzzard
Genuinely truly, Refugio is one of my favorite characters to write. 🥹 His voice comes easy to me; he's so vibrant and clever and funny and deeply emotional always, and this little piece is so wistful and homesick... it truly is an exercise is poetry I hope to continue to emulate. It's one of those bits of writing that make me think, oh if I can make more like this... I'm set.
line(s) you think could’ve been done better
The group ate and moved on. They chatted as they went, Cammen and Mathuin ultimately deciding on forgiveness. Not for any particular reason; just because it was easy and kind. Zevran was grateful for it.
The further they went, the thicker the forest became. Tree branches crowded overhead, but never overlapped, creating an unusual patchwork ceiling. Between the gaps in the canopy, daylight fell in dancing columns that tricked their eyes.
- for suffering is such a part
This one's kind of tough. I feel like every line has a job to do in writing, but they can't all be masterful and brilliant and insightful; that'd be silly. Some lines and passages are just there to efficiently get us from one bright spot to the next.
That being said, I could've done more showing rather than telling in fsisap. If I were to tackle it again I think it'd be really different in style, not to mention much longer 😵
line(s) that makes you want to punch a character
Atanasio was right about one thing: A Crow did not lose his composure. Even with a line of blood beginning to form at his neck, the man looked at Zevran with a wholly unimpressed expression. He remained thus, quietly thinking, before answering.
“Who?”
- quinta de talpa
This guy suuuuucks. I have this image of a man who has been tasked, for decades, for most of his life in fact, to just torture children--and he rationalizes it to himself so fully! Perceiving him through Zevran's POV makes it all the more impactful. This encounter is a nightmare from his childhood. This man is a monster he survived, when far too many didn't.
line(s) that makes you go “awww”
Hamal hums softly, happily.
“I dedicated the fight to you,” he says. “The Paragons will favor you now, I think. All of Orzammar will know.”
Zevran presses a light kiss over the dressings and gauze on his arm.
“Ah, but your favor is the only one I need.”
- tengo la vida muy corta (y tu la mirada decente)
Tender wound bandaging is a good trope and I think this little excerpt is sweet. I don't think I ever posted it here.
line(s) that contain an easter egg
For a moment she focused solely on Hamal, lying across from her. Zevran saw a moment of unmasked feeling, a deep sadness welling in her eyes, and she lifted a hand to brush against Hamal’s face.
“Is he alright?” she asked quietly. All the usual edge was gone from her voice.
“He will be fine,” Wynne responded. Morrigan’s eyes shut. She drew her hand back, and held it against her chest like it burned.
“Good,” she said softly, and Zevran got the impression, only for a moment, that she knew something no one else knew. “Good.”
- for suffering is such a part
Not sure if I'm interpreting 'easter egg' correctly, but this is Morrigan talking about the dark ritual.
I hope to write a little more exploring Hamal and Morrigan's dynamic because it's very bittersweet.
line(s) that are shocking
“Zevran, I don’t know how to shut the damn thing off!”
Hamal’s hands were mere inches from the looms, but he gripped the assassin’s ankle, trying to pull their body free.
“Leave them, amor,” Zevran said.
“But they’re—it is crushing them!”
“They’re gone. We have to leave!”
- (wip) quinta de talpa
A little snippet from a scene in QdT. It's one of those scenes where things just go terribly awry and I'm excited to edit it up and share it.
line(s) you want to talk about more
Zevran thought carefully. The story had the cadence of a very long riddle, and he had the suspicion that there was no wrong or right answer to it. He also got the impression, judging from Mathuin and Cammen’s inquisitive gazes, that the story would not be complete until he answered. It was his turn now to conclude the narrative.
He thought about it at length. Mathuin and Cammen waited patiently, silent, full of anticipation for his response.
“Alright,” he said finally, having thought about it for quite a while. He stopped by a large tree and looked up at its branches, as the others listened.
“I think both stories punish the clan, not for cutting the tree, but for their treatment of Abelas. In the first story, they should have been watching the child more closely. They knew he was destined for challenges, so they should have worked doubly to keep him from harm. In the second story, the clan should not have sought to drive the man away. They knew he had suffered all his life, so they should have helped him get back on his feet, not ostracized him. The moral of both stories is to protect the vulnerable.”
- for suffering is such a part
I am SO delighted by this scene where Zevran gets to participate in Dalish culture and storytelling, while bonding with his companions in a way that invites his natural curiosity and cleverness and creativity!!
I knew early on that I wanted to incorporate The Rowan Grove in fsisap somehow. It's one of my favorite codex entries, but it always felta bit dissonant when I considered it along with what we know of Dalish culture; so I wrote an entire scene where characters share the story in various iterations, and have a discussion about its meaning.
The added layer to it of course is metaphorical. Zevran is in many ways the central character from that tale. The comparison comes up again in later chapters.
It's an allegory on various levels, and I personally love allegorical tales. They're a great way to dig deep into a character and world. :)

hi! hello! I'm not sure how to open this and this could've been a comment, but okay well so I ran into your fic (the canon playthrough, as it were) some days ago, and read the first part, had a wonderful time, and then clicked open an honest lie and had to go, oh, this has act 2 spoilers, I'm barely through act 1, let's mark it for later. cut to today: I'm almost done with act 2, i have an afternoon off, what better time to read?
i have been here with like, staggering chest pain of the feelings variety for an hour now. an hour! you are so good! and then, I get to chapter 6, and realise - oh no, I have to stop reading, HERE, because I haven't spoken to Balthazar yet. Do you know how devastating this was, for me? do you know how difficult it was to face the fact that my own quest to not be spoiled would make me have to put this fic down? (I didn't. Btw. Put the fic down. I was like well I'll get there in a day or two anyway. It'll be fine!) and now my chest hurts more and i have discovered plot elements i knew nothing or at least not much about (at some point tomorrow I'll learn exactly who orthon is and it'll be such a lightbulb moment)
I realise this is all sounding rather accusatory for an ask that is essentially meant to say: your writing is incredible! i am in love with Rosalie! I'm thrilled, I am truly having a wonderful evening, and also "we go to a bookshop together. I'll pay, but you need to carry everything that I buy :)" killed me. It was the smiley face that did it. thank you for writing this incredible piece! i am going to now read party favours as a sort of "there there its okay your heart is being shredded in your chest by this canon: have some fake dating as a treat" treat. thank you again for writing! etc
hello lovely, thank you for your message (obsessed with the phrase 'this tumblr ask could've been an ao3 comment' in part two btw, the new fandom version of 'this meeting could've been an email'. except, tumblr asks and ao3 comments are both wonderful things, so this is the opposite of a problem!)
Thank you so much for reading! I'm glad you enjoy it lmao, I always worry that game retellings are overdone/too self indulgent, so it's very funny hearing someone keeps spoiling bg3 for themselves, it's like the opposite of my constant fear!!! anyway, i hope you're enjoying your playthrough regardless :') good luck for the orthon fight lmao :'))
And I'm glad you liked the table conversation! I truly think Rosalie has like 17 date ideas and Astarion is just like "sorry man idk how to be a person :)". He put down going shopping bc he was just copying her answers lol. But I think the best way you to use your boyfriend's vampire strength is to turn him into a hardback book pack mule tbh, Rosalie knows what she likes and she's living her best life.
Best of luck for the gauntlet and beyond xx

How do you do your colors? Do you have a tutorial by chance?
aaa i dont have one onhand but i can go through my process? (this ended up being really long oops😭)
most of these arent like color theory rules or anything this is just how i like to do things
usually i choose 2-4 hues for the flats and pick some colors for my pallette off those
i generally like to stay away from desaturated colors but thats just cus super saturated colors r kinda my thing and i like em :]
and in my color picking for the pallette i try to make sure i have a substitute for black and white! you can give the impression of those two colors without actually using pure black or pure white by replacing them with other colors that have darker or lighter values than the rest of your pallette (ill say more on values in a sec)
Tumblr media
picture example of everything so far
nowww we talk about values!! a lot of people have a tendency to stay away from brighter more saturated colors cus they dont know how to use them in a pleasing way, and part of the reason for that i think is they arent checking values. values are a term to refer to white, black, grayscale colors, and when i refer to the values of your pallette, i mean how it looks in grayscale
Tumblr media
this is how the colors i chose earlier look monochrome. i tried to make sure there was a good variety of dark and light values (could've done a little better than this tbh but you get the idea)
i Always check this when im picking colors cus i am prone to eyestrainy color clashy stuff and fixing values usually helps keep it pleasing
nowww we get into choosing shading and lighting colors. values also help for this!
Tumblr media
i usually use a multiply layer for shading and a screen layer for highlights to start off with and choose a color id like for both. this time i did blue for shades and yellow for lights
also i avoid shading the black substitute sometimes cus sometimes it can look weird since i usually also make this my lineart color but thats not a hard rule or anything
but, while these are a nice starting point, im not satisfied with them so i merge all the layers and start adjusting them, making them more saturated and making sure the values look okay
Tumblr media
aaaand it turns out like this!
usually this would be where people would stop but iiiii have been messing around with transitional shades as of late so i should probably talk about those too. basically i saw a painter say she avoids blending the base colors with the shading and lighting too much because it makes pieces look muddy to her, and that she prefers to make her own transition shades that keep the saturation up. so i took that to mean blast bright ass colors all over my piece as long as the values line up.
im still kinda figuring out how i like to do this and this is mostly just based off me like fucking around and isnt really apart of color theory rules from what i know but its how my pieces look the way they do
Tumblr media
basically for each highlight color ill pick it, and move the hue level a little in the direction away from the base color, and then ill adjust that until the value is between the base color and the highlight, and then i repeat that process with the shading colors.
Tumblr media
and it should look a little like this in monochrome with the values between the ones of highlights base colors and shading. cus it transitions between themmm thats why its a transition shade.
Tumblr media
and this is how it turns out in color! the general idea is to make them pop while still being close enough to the base colors/shading/lighting that it isnt so jarring that it looks gross. im still fucking around and figuring out how to do this in a way that looks good to me but yeah! :]
that's my whole process basically. i did not realize itd make a whole essay but i hope its helpful in any way? feel free to ask for clarification if any parts are confusing

back in your ask box!!! i watched your final thoughts for yakuza 1 video (well done on being able to stand some of the glitches like god) and i was wondering if you had any more that you forgot to say or didn’t think of in the moment? i just really love hearing people’s final thoughts on game or other piece of media
That video ended up getting WAY sappier than I expected in the end but I seriously should've seen it coming TBH. I'm a sappy person at heart and anyway let's not get too sidetracked.
So I will say I definitely forgot to mention the camera. Having no control over the camera does mess with me quite a bit. Because Kiryu will turn around and you'll notice in the videos I uploaded of fights-he sometimes just stops hitting enemies. They're gone. Lots of times enemies would get stuck behind wall and other objects. I was also constantly checking the map in the menu itself, because I kept getting directions mixed up.
Not a game breaker, does make for some intense awkwardness. (Some of it's my own fault, I am hardly the gaming champion around here ahaha)
Combat got repetitive. My own fault because as I said in the video, I didn't finish Komaki's training thanks to the input issue. I had other skills I developed too, but I wasn't ever remembering to pull it off. So I didn't vary it to the degree I could've.
At the ending, I was going to finish the hostesses but I messed myself up there because you have Haruka permanently in the endgame. And her bond with Kiryu decreases if he goes to those places (it dropped when I bought weapons at Beam) and I feel bad making her sad so that was my own issue.
There is one place where the original game is better than Kiwami that is..going to probably be a 'hot take' but-not having Majima ambush you every twenty seconds makes for a less stressful game experience overall. You can get from point A to point B with only the standard street goons (which are VERY persistent you can barely get around the block without at least two ambushes: and they have bigger enemies that are in larger groups) but those fights are fairly quick, and pay well!
Majima, meanwhile, can seriously drag out. It's not as bad in the beginning but you'll come up to the end of Kiwami like "please..just one break..I do not have any more healing items."
For RGG'S first game out of the gate, it's good. I enjoyed it more than I expected too. It's all the same elements I love with Yakuza (as I had sapped about in the video) and the characters are recognizable, even in this rougher around the edges stage.
The dub itself is a strange point. As I said, again in the video, I've done some digging on it. The localization is considered decent, (apparently 'hit some balls' is translated as accurately as it could be) but that excessive swearing really shoves it into the 'trying to hard B movie' stuff. HOWEVER.
It has a GOOD cast and there's times where it's done really well. I don't have the kind of professional experience to claim someone is 'phoning in a performance'. I can't make that call. Not all line deliveries are very good, and there's some odd changes between how characters talk from beginning to end. There was one point near the end where Kiryu delivered a couple lines and sounded like a completely different person?? It was odd.
Directing is where it really shows. I feel like with the voices behind it, and the localization team, had it been given better directing, it would've been a bit I guess. stronger? I feel it's important to keep in mind too with it being the first game (and RGG wasn't some triple A studio back in the day either) they did pretty good.
;)
The games good! It's fun, it's recognizable. and I honestly think that if I had gone into Yakuza with this as my first game, I'd still be here. I got into Yakuza via Yakuza 0 and have since gone through the entire series. It's very important and special to me and I genuinely enjoyed Yakuza 1 more than I expected.
I didn't anticipate hating it, of course. But I was still a little surprised regardless since it is so infamous in the fandom. My only regret is that unless you own a PS2 or a really good emulator, so many people can't play it. Which is a shame overall. That's not unique to this and Kiwami, the remake is out there and known. But still. Sometimes I get a little sad about how hard game preservation has gotten.

What were your thoughts on the last couple of TL episodes? It’s starting to look like Tedbecca was a collective delusion after all, lol. If that is indeed the case, what would you like to see as a conclusion to Rebecca’s arc? I can’t picture her ending up alone, romantically; normally I’d be all for it, subverting expectations and all, but so much of her story so far has hinged on her longing for a wholesome romantic love to settle down and start a family with, that I’m afraid her ending up alone wouldn’t be empowering but just straight up sad. And if it’s not Ted, who do you think it could be so that it’s still a somewhat satisfying endgame? I’d be ok with Sam, tbh. At least that’d be infinitely better than the Dutch man or some other random, last-minute addition.
If I'm being completely honest, the reason I haven't shared my thoughts on the last few episodes is because I have some pretty strong negative feelings about the writing, and I didn't want to put those feelings in the "Ted Lasso" tag and wind up getting hate, but tagging spoilers is necessary/required... so I was in a bit of a conundrum.
My biggest complaint is that I don't understand where this season is going. This season feels like it's incredibly scattered and all over the place--and if any new elements get added now in the last three episodes (even ones I've been longing to see since Episode 1), it's all going to feel incredibly rushed.
Tumblr media
What it comes down to is that Ted and Rebecca are supposed to be the lead characters in this show, but lately (especially in these last two episodes about Keeley and Colin) it feels like they're barely even supporting characters. They don't have story arcs of their own within each episode, which is incredibly frustrating, because why would they sideline their main characters this late in the final season? No matter how much I love the large supporting cast, and think those actors deserve their time to shine, these supporting-character-centric episodes are making me feel like this can't possibly be the final season, because if this is "it" for Ted and Rebecca's stories, I feel incredibly cheated by the writers.
Rebecca hasn't had her own storyline, where she isn't just reacting to what other characters are doing, since "Sunflowers." How is that possible? In my MFA creative writing program, you would get your piece of writing torn to fucking shreds if your lead female character had no agency in the story and was simply reacting to other characters. Rebecca Welton is meant to be an active presence in this story, effecting change and driving the story forward; why on earth has she been relegated to someone who is only in the episode to give advice and pep talks to the other characters (sometimes shouted advice, but advice nonetheless)?
I'm also still trying to figure out why they introduced the idea that Rebecca is/was actively trying to have a baby, even going so far as to get tests done at a fertility clinic, only to immediately drop that thread after revealing her infertility...? As if finding out the news had no lasting impact on her whatsoever, and she immediately gave up trying to have a family, even though there are so many other avenues she could've explored...? I trust that they haven't forgotten about that storyline, and will most likely try to tie up that loose end by the final episode, but immediately abandoning that storyline after introducing it in order to focus the show on supporting characters makes me feel like Rebecca's storyline is no longer the one that is driving the narrative of the show, which is a huge change, and one I don't particularly like.
As for the question about who would make a satisfying endgame for Rebecca, I'm firmly a Rebecca x Happiness person, so whatever will make her happy, I could find a way to justify. I personally have reservations about Rebecca/Sam, but the show itself doesn't seem to share those reservations. But I think the fact that Sam's father doesn't like Rebecca speaks volumes, because I'm sure Sam was kind when describing what happened between them, so his dad taking that information badly is validating to me. And if Dutch Boatman comes back, I'd be pissed, because the "did we? oh yes we did," still bothers me, even though I'm well-aware that the writers didn't intend for that to imply an assault happened. There are so many other ways they could've written that line, and that storyline in general, and I'm just frustrated that it made it to the screen the way it did.
I think that what is actually going to happen is that we'll see a classic rom-com airport scene where Rebecca asks Ted to stay instead of going back to Kansas, and the show will end right there, a bit ambiguously, with Ted and Rebecca decidedly not together yet, but with the possibility of that "Ted, please, stay," meaning something more. I'm almost positive that's what's going to happen, because that sets up more seasons if they want to do them, but also lets them "off the hook" if more seasons don't happen, because the ending would be a classic one that audiences recognize as an "end" even in its ambiguity.

Just saw Wish. I know it's getting hate, but... overall... I thought it was very... meh? Like literally meh.
(whinging)
The protag was likable, though a bit derivative in her motivations. The message was... ok, I suppose. The animation was fairly good in most places.
It does definitely have quite a few big issues, exacerbated by what it's trying so hard to be. All the pieces are there for a great movie, which is what's so frustrating about it.
For me, I felt that the textures and lighting in particular had some kind of issue. They look okay in some places, but the whole thing looked like it was un-rendered on purpose. Like it looked like the behind-the-scenes draft version before they do the final render on it. This was probably to give off a sense of "storybook" quality to the 3d models by rendering them all flat and matte but tbh it looks rather cheap for Disney. All the colors in the movie seem to also be quite muted. The color palette they chose is very cool and understated which made me want to take a nap. And since much of the movie takes place at night, that exacerbates matters a lot. There's also very little variation in setting, colors, or lighting, which makes things boring.
The songs are the biggest problem imo. I can't remember any of the songs at all, they're very forgettable to me. I'm sure there are kids who liked them and I'm not aiming to undercut that, but the fact of the matter is that these songs can't hold a candle to classic Disney songs. Classic Disney songs have a showtune quality. The melodies will stay in your mind for decades after hearing them once. The lyrics are perfectly suited to the characters and story. You want to sing along with them. And... these songs ain't that, sorry. It made sense when I learned that these songs were composed by musicians whose main background was writing Top 40 hits, not Broadway musicals. It sounds like the assignment was to try to be Lin Manuel-Miranda without paying for Lin Manuel-Miranda. They failed spectacularly at that. If there was one movie to get Lin Manuel-Miranda for, it would be this one. Had they done that and had a few absolute banger songs in this, it would have made a HUGE difference in this film's staying power.
As it is, I can't remember much about the music, so it's hard to comment on it. It wasn't offensively bad, just a very generic sound to it that didn't feel Disney-movie-esque (or at least, not major animated feature from Disney-esque. Certainly not 100-year anniversary material). The worst song is This Is The Thanks I Get because it had so much potential and they threw it away. The animation and staging during the song is great, it's actually the highlight of the film for me. They were clearly aiming for this to be the "Let it Go" of the movie, a huge hit that people talk about for a long time. And it's been a very long time since there's been a straight-up unapologetic villain song in a Disney movie, so I was excited for this one. Here's the problem. THE SONG IS NOT IN A MINOR KEY! Why? No, seriously, what were they thinking?? It has all the hallmarks of a big, grandiose megalomaniacal villain song AND IT'S NOT IN A MINOR KEY! The tone of the song is clearly meant to evoke fear as evidenced by the animation and clearly the storyboard artist was aiming for a big, frightening number. The song doesn't match that at all. Instead it's kinda happy? Playful? Like a Top 40 hit that your mom might play in the car? What the fuck? The lost potential is so sad because Maginifico could've been a great and funny villain. He's got the narcissism, comedic qualities, cartoonish mustache twirling and hot DILF-ness to carry the villain role. For some reason though, the big cartoon-y bad guy stuff feels a bit... restrained by the fact that he's trapped in a 3D model. Like the over-the-top maniacal 2D slasher faces that they keep trying so hard to give him just don't translate to 3D very well. He would've looked so much fucking better in 2D, I'm sorry. His voice work is done quite well, though - actually all the voice work in the movie is. (The goat was not that bad honestly)
Apparently one of the concept arts has Magnifico's wife (does she have a name) being evil as well. What the fuck, Disney, where was that?? They could've been an evil power couple, that would've ATE. They also whitewashed her, which... ok, interesting choice. It seems they were also going to have Star take the form of a boy and have a romantic arc with Asha which I'm glad they did NOT do, adding romance to a film like this probably would've served to make it even more generic.
As a movie for little tiny children I think this film is okay. For the Disney fans this was supposed to be a love letter to, let's all go watch Aladdin, Mulan, Lion King (THE ORIGINAL), Beauty and the Beast, and all the other films that weren't created in a boardroom lab. Wish has a generic look, a generic sound, a generic message, and as much as I support those who enjoyed it, I can't help but commiserate with the fans who are disappointed in the less-than-stellar Disney flicks of the past few years. It's like they are allergic to taking risks, hiring creatives and letting them work, or keeping greedy corporate hands out of their projects. Hopefully their revenues keep tanking until they get the message but it looks like Iger is still drinking pure copium based on his recent comments that "audiences don't want films with a message anymore". OK. Yeah, that's what you should take from this, Iger. Have fun continuing to censor your films, gotta get those bucks from the Russian and Chinese markets, pal.

Tbh I enjoyed S4 but I have problems with it. Like it doesn't make any sense for Macaque to be there of all places. On the other hand, Peng claiming that he can't find Macaque anywhere while Macaque is literally just vibing and stealing and eating Wukong's food is a little bit funny. But yeah, it doesn't make any sense for him to be there. Also I feel like there was so much potential for S4 to delve into Wukong and Macaque's history, regrets and mistakes and both sides of their history to be shown to each other, it would have been the perfect time and set up to get into it, especially because all the bad guys like DBK, Spider Queen, LBD and Azure/the brotherhood were all people who were pissed at Wukong for things done in the past. It could have led to so much character growth and understanding for the cast. It's sometimes hard not to feel like we were shorted when it comes to S4 when I stop to think about all the potential the memory scroll had as a plot device.
first off, there's a lot of shit that doesn't make sense in season 4, so i'm not at all surprised that we found yet ANOTHER thing that don't make no sense unless we heavily put things together ourselves.
like WHY was he there? it just came off to me like he was hiding/avoiding them. Because yeah, Peng hates him, but what if Azure insisted? What if he heard about Azure going to DBK and knew that they'd try and find him next and he was like 'nope. no thanks'.
like we're putting a lot onto the characters and plot because there wasn't enough time to explain it. but it just came off, to me, as him hiding away on the mountain AND/OR guarding the mountain because wukong was missing. in a 'there has to be someone to look after things' type of situation.
but listen -- i'm not the biggest fan of macaque's characterization in season 4 either. they fell into that trap where, when the bad guy is on the good guy's side, he's weaker! and i can't stand that.
but anyway.
there was potential to delve into their history, but honestly, it should've been tackled before. so now they've kinda written themselves into a hole where, if it doesn't happen in season 5, it's going to be frustrating as a viewer (i don't have high hopes that it's going to happen in s5) but like. we're also dealing with a show with a lot of restrictions on budget, time, ideas, etc. so we have to keep that in mind.
because they SQUEEZE as much as they can into these seasons. and i'd get that if they were uncertain, from season to season, if they were going to get ANOTHER season, but not long after season 4 came out, they mentioned season 5 so i was like... why was it so rushed then LMFAOO
plus there's toys to sell!
but yes, it would've been cool if they'd used the memory scroll and wukong's past to dig deep into their relationship. but all they could give us were those hints. and it feels like this show tries to fit TOO MANY ideas into a season. and i think it could benefit from pulling back a bit and choosing, truly, what it wants to focus on, because the memory scroll is honestly a multiseason device, and i'm sure it'll come up in some form in season 5 but like. i dunno man.
ofc there's wasted potential. and things that could've gone better, etc. etc. but i always try and look at it from multiple perspectives bc things get cut, ideas get ereased, that whole process is painful in television bc so much has to die. but that just makes me stop and think to myself 'then think smaller!!'
but i feel like they're only allowed to do that to a certain extent because TOYS AND LEGO SETS but i just. i dunno. i know it could be better. and deep down, i feel like the time could be better utilized, but. honestly, i'm so used to being let down by media and entertainment i've just made my piece with like. writing it out myself.

16, 29, 30 for the artist ask game?
16 (Something you are good at but don't really have fun doing) - i'd say i'm pretty good at doing things in a comic-style layout! but the thing is. it's also an absolute pain every time. which is why i haven't posted anything else like this one from a while ago - even though it's a simple one, it was still just. so weirdly time-consuming. mostly because of the problem of working out the layout, i think, and even then i feel like i could've laid that one out better. maybe that'll change if i do things like that more often, but anyway, yeah i think it counts for this
29 (Media you love, but doesn't inspire you artistically) - uhhh don't know, with most of the media i love i make art of or am inspired by it. even in the case of, like, victorian literature or 60s/70s sci-fi novels, that kind of stuff still somewhat inspires me artistically. even with, like, games that i love playing but haven't done proper fanart of, again i'm still somewhat inspired by them. idk i think the only media that could qualify for 'doesn't inspire me artistically' would be maybe minecraft/gaming youtube stuff, and even then i've absolutely made mcyt fanart before
30 (What piece of yours do you think is underrated) - here's a few of them:
this art of january, which isn't, like, the piece with the most effort/polish put into it ever, but the other piece it was kind of made in relation to got over twice the notes... so it's underrated by that standard
this drawing of carrie (gore warning). such a nice drawing and yet so little acknowledgement compared to most of my other fl art
almost every piece i did for this year's artfight tbh. with the exception of the wayback vs vinki piece, most of it got way less attention than my usual art when i posted it here
but for the most part i think my art has been like. getting pretty much the same amount of love each time. although while going through my art tag i've noticed that most of the art i've been posting is fanart... so i'm sure my answer would be different if i shared more original work. also there are other pieces that are more 'underrated' but that'd require going too far back into my art tag

I guess this is where we must disagree. I personally think rwylm dean, aged 50ish, who a lot of his trauma is about having to be a parent to sam when he was still a kid, who felt like he was such a bad impact to ben's life that he erased his memories, who struggled a lot to be a good parent to jack at first, who now has a much better and closer relationship with them, who has neices, and for whom jack fills the role of "kid", would not want any more kids of his own. Like, to me, Jack is already his kid, and I think that's enough for him. I don't think dean "i hurt the people who need me" would willingly accept the HUGE responsibility of raising another kid . Like I definitely think he loves kids, and he's great with kids- but EYE think he would prefer to positively impact kid's lives from a distance, like as a camp counselor or a teacher or a coach.... idk.
It could just be that I'm projecting, though. Maybe I'm looking at this through Jack's perspective too much. Like, if I were jack, and my stepdad got a brand new (presumably a baby/infant) kid, I'd feel like he was trying to "start over". To borrow a quote from sisterhood of the traveling pants, "What were they thinking, having another baby at their age? And what was I? Just some experiment from their hippie days... ...and now it's time to start their real family?"
Idk idk idk. I love the fic so far, and ultimately i could probably be convinced that dean DOES want kids (Your writing is just that good. You could probably convince me that dean was straight and noah was hot if you really wanted to askfnsjskxncj). I'm excited for the next chapter!
i feel like this is one of those arguments that could go either way for me tbh. i can see dean being content without kids AND wanting kids. especially when he's someone who saw the white picket fence/two and a half kids life as an escape from hunting. having a house and spouse and kids has become the ideal for him, even if that's not actually what he needs in order to be happy
i think you can both be terrified of screwing up AND want kids! lots of people feel that way. in jack's case, basically a young adult was dropped into his lap right after his best friend (and love of his life) died in front of him (twice), all while the universe was literally being torn apart by god himself. so it's not so much that he's trying to start over. it would just be nice if he could take a crack at it outside of chuck's rat trap
ALSO i think some of dean's desire to have kids actually comes from his own wishes that his childhood had been different. I think he mentions wishing he could've brought his kids to bobby's cabin in rwylm, and in a way that's just wish that he himself could've done that every summer
anyway the way dean talked about it in the fic was kind of regretting not having kids and i think he feels that especially when looking at sam's life. he sees sam's marriage with his two kids as this perfect happy thing, while his own life is falling to pieces. i doubt i'll get around to covering it as the main bulk of the fic is about dean and cas figuring their shit out!

i have Predictions for season five
will is gonna have his moment. THE moment. where he comes out to mike or to his brother or to someone and it's not just hinted at or trotted around
somehow, some way, they're gonna revive eddie. it's not gonna be pretty. might even be vecna possessed but yk what? he deserves to be the villain after sacrificing his life for a town that literally wanted him gone in the first place
adding onto that, el will manage to bring him back and vanish/kill vecna for good, and they can use that to prove to hawkins that eddie is finally "rid of the devil" because he was technically exorcized
mileven will still be endgame, BUT either mike is gonna give his life for will's or vice versa and it's gonna lead to some sort of further confession from will about his feelings for mike (and yes he absolutely does have feelings for mike it's been obvious for a LONG time)
argyle is a wayyyyy smarter character than we give him credit for. somehow he's gonna come up with some whacky innovative idea that saves everybody's asses
murray and enzo and yuri will cohabit murray's bunker. or just murray and enzo. either way I'm not complaining
doctor owens is the one who's gonna come up with a believable explanation for anyone wanting to report on the "cursed town" of hawkins, and in addition to that, pretty much everyone is gonna move out
the only people I could see maybe not leaving are the wheelers and/or the jopper crew
jancy is gonna break up, but stancy still won't end up together. all three will probably remain close to one another though because I don't believe in messiness shut up!!
eddie and steve, if not together, will at LEAST be the unexpected, super close duo who act like an old married couple about things (post exorcism of course)
if and when eddie comes back from the dead, it'll hit dustin the hardest. and surprisingly, steve, who probably felt really awful for not getting to know him better before he died
vecna invades the minds of people and builds the upside down based off of their perceptions of hawkins. the first victim he took after he woke back up was will because of el opening the gate, which is why it's stuck in 1983. and like we all know that but I think if I'm going off of the whole will/mike sacrifice thing, will is gonna be the one to die, breaking the connection between vecna and his memories, so one of the key pieces in his little upside down construction project is gone. this will weaken him enough that el can finish the job
(and not a prediction but a complaint: why didn't she just squeeze his lil brain while she had the chance I am so upset like I get it plotwise but it could've been done so fast tbh???)

it just ocurred to me that we leyrens arent the only ones being let down. now i realize its not a matter of favorites or protagonists, its a matter of the writers being bad at making couples in general. aside from them cutting leyrens crucial dialogues and simply avoiding an earnest conversation about the bribe (dont get me started on the offscreen kiss i might as well pass out), we have sharpwin with a bunch of phone calls and everything being about max as usual, whatever the hell is going on with floyd, lyn and claude (rip evie) and the disservice they did to iggy and martin, who used to be the most stable pairing of the entire show. i kinda feel bad for sharpwins because i can feel the wedding will be all over the place (someone on twitter said helen might get married wearing a leather skirt lmao) and the fact that they exchanged a racist castle for a racist hospital rooftop is sad, helen did deserve something nice even if it was in ny. anyway, im happy/unhappy to realize that all couples in this show are equally built on unnecessary drama and crumbs of joy
there's a lot of inner peace and enjoyment to be found when we accept that new amsterdam is not a particularly well written show. like don't get me wrong, the writers definitely TRY their best but. the skill level is not there to execute the ideas they have sometimes lol (saved for my bias opinion of the stronger writers in the room but they're unfortunately relegated to story editors who only get to write one episode a season). but that honestly makes it easy to live with these storylines knowing that it's not out of malicious intent.
but yes, everyone's storyline and the overall cohesiveness of the show took a nose dive this season. of the main characters, helen taking the brunt of it since she went from her own individual identity to just being max's romantic interest and somehow London, which was suppose to be able her character backstory and development, was monopolized and then sidelined by max's story. Frankly I think of all the Bad Cards that were dealt out this season, lauren made it through decently. For as stupid as the donation plot and then the visa drama was, at least we saw some kind of consistency and end goal with what the writers had planned for her growth through this conflict. Tbh if the writers had allocated just a handful more scenes and screentime to lauren and leyla's story this season, it could've been a well done story. But the moments they chose to cut and be referenced in conversations instead (leyla coming to floyd about a rec letter, lauren tell leyla about her triggers, the additional money drop moments they had where lauren was more at ease) ended up making pacing feel rushed. Though I will say, I disagree about them avoiding earnest conversations about the donation because I think leyla said her piece in 4x10 and lauren said hers in 4x13. What's left and what I'd like to see is their conversation on how they move forward from it and I'm (probably foolishly) hopeful we'll get that in the finale.
ah well it is what it is. we've got one more episode left in the season and hopeful it's a good sign for better things to come in s5

What are your personal thoughts on each of the Tenjiku guys? You said you had a soft spot for them so I'm curious 👀 obviously you love Kaku and Ran but why and what about the others? Please word dump all you want lol
ANON are you sure you wanna unleash me like this?? Alright alright alright... Since you asked for it...
I love Tenjiku because out of all the antagonist gangs in TokRev, the villainous found family trope is the strongest and most genuine with them, and I'M ALL FOR IT BABY!!! They're built up as this gang of incorrigible sadists who have no qualms about dealing drugs, ruining lives and murder, and yet they all readily took the rap for Mikey, Toman and even (at least some of) the lower-ranked Tenjiku members, and we get official art of Tenjiku just having fun and genuinely enjoying each other's companies. Each of the S-62 is an asshole of some level and yet they truly cared for each other AND KAKUCHO! Always remember that none of them snitched on Kakucho when they were arrested, and even Ran tried to deter South from getting to him. A bunch of big brothers... all of them... Honour among thieves... (I have so many thoughts about them meeting and forging strong bonds in juvie, and even more about how they took in Kakucho ahhh) Also, Tenjiku's strong Eastern/'Chinese' theme is just really appealing to me. Tenjiku being from Yokohama (which has Japan's largest Chinatown), the Journey to the West references, Four Heavenly Kings, Yin-Yang motif etc. (Speaking of Yin-Yang, the Yin-Yang dynamic between Izana and Kakucho is just so strong that it even shows in their colour schemes haha)
Alright, now on to the individual members...
Izana: My heart is broken...... There are many tragic characters in TokRev but Izana just has to be the most tragic. Yes, he's had a wretched fate but at the same time, he's also convinced himself of it a lot and driven himself down that path. Not only does he stubbornly denies Kakucho's and Tenjiku's respect and loyalty, he even undermines their camaraderie as fear and self-agenda. This is a person so consumed by his own demons that even in death, when he has done the most altruistic deed of sacrificing his life for another, he still believes that there is no salvation for him (which I find realistic tbh, because there's no way Mikey could've convinced otherwise in one night, when Izana's been telling himself that he's beyond redemption his whole life). He is shown to lack any empathy nor love for his men/subordinates, but I'm sure he must have shown some off-screen because why would the S-62, a bunch of selfish jerks, be so sincerely loyal to him? I hope Wakui gives us more Tenjiku content in the DVD extra booklets. Izana as a character is just so enigmatic and mysterious, IMO. His background as a character is practically fully explored but at the same time, you get the feeling that you can't know what his thoughts are (or maybe that's just me). Kakucho has been with him almost his whole life, but I still think that even Kakucho does not fully understand Izana. If there was anyone who really knew Izana, it would be Shinichirou. Anyway, this guy is the definition of the 'Alas, Poor Villain' trope and my heart is in pieces because of him.
Mucho: Like Kakucho, Mucho is very much of a 'Wrong Place' kinda guy. He's mentioned to Sanzu that he's got 'nowhere to go' which is why he's in the gang life, but you can tell that he does want to be a good person. He's compassionate and fair to his subordinates and Sanzu, can distinguish between right and wrong and good and evil. He’s really underrated as a character: this guy is obviously strong and powerful, and also self-disciplined, smart and cunning (his long con game?? Wow). Out of all TokRev characters (aside from Shin) he’s probably the most mature and sensible, and he’s also really self-aware as a person (he knows where his morals lie and admits he would’ve been better off with Mikey instead of Izana, but he just can’t help but commit himself to Tenjiku). It’s a pity cuz he would’ve been a terrific Oyabun. And when you think about it, his death is really sad (too bad Sanzu stole all the attention LOL). I have the feeling that he wanted to turn over a new leaf and repent his sins (either by joining or helping Toman, or even just giving up the gang life) after his 2nd juvie stint, but got murdered upon release (sooooo yakuza-esque btw haha I wonder if it was Wakui’s homage to yakuza films). And he did say he was all alone, so I wonder if anyone ever found out that he died. Did the remaining Tenjiku members (especially Kakucho) look for him?? How did they feel if they found out about his death?? It’s unlikely but I hope Wakui sheds some light on this!! Anyway, Mucho needs more appreciation!!
Mocchi: Unfortunately I can’t really form much of an opinion about Mocchi because he doesn’t get as much screen time and introspection as the other characters haha. But at the very least we know that he values honour in fights, really enjoys fighting, openly acknowledges/respects his teammates’ strengths (Haitani Bros) and is one of the goofier guys in Tenjiku. I think as a youth/young adult he probably hung and went out more with the other ‘fun’ guys like the Haitanis, but seems to have grown up more grounded/cautious/responsible because he was shown being kinda naggy about how Sanzu should dispose of the corpses. All in all, he seems to be the pretty standard ‘muscle brute’ guy, but hopefully Wakui will give him more spotlight in the upcoming chapters!! (Also, I just feel kinda bad for him cuz he’s always left out of the fandom’s thirst for Tenjiku/Bonten💀)
Shion: Again, can’t really say much about him because the limited chapters and panels he’s been in only show him to be an overconfident butt monkey haha. I don’t think he’s exceptionally strong, my headcanon about him is that he’s got clout and a place in the S-62 because of other factors like connections (perhaps from his BD era) and just the general reputation of a wacky guy who’d do literally anything. There’s a chance that Wakui might give him more spotlight and a backstory to hype him up as a character because he’s facing off against Akkun, and I think Wakui might wanna give Akkun a little more dignity by fighting someone ‘strong’/‘impressive’.
Ran & Rindou: HAHA ACTUALLY I like Rindou more than I do Ran 😜 Rindou’s character design appeals more to me, and his personality (simultaneously lazy and disinterested and yet cocky, bratty and sadistic) is just more fun than Ran lmao. I’ve said quite a bit about them (and trust me I’m gonna say more) so I’ll just talk about why I like them here. I’m not gonna lie anon. Like most Haitani stans it’s mainly thirst over their character designs and general mysterious and enigmatic charisma. I was really neutral on them upon their first introduction (Valhalla viewing gallery) but then Tenjiku gave them way more of a personality and then with their Bonten appearance?? I was a goner!!! And there’s something so interesting about their incredibly close brotherly bond, I’m just waiting on the edge of my seat and biting my nails for the next Haitani backstory reveal!!
Kakucho: WHY DO I LOVE KAKUCHO?? ANON WHY DO I BREATHE?? Jokes aside: I think I’ve always had a thing for the dark-haired brooding type but I just really love Kakucho’s character. Despite his absolutely tragic and horrible childhood, he’s a good person through and through and doesn’t make excuses for himself nor his actions. In a way, he’s kind of a foil to Izana: they both have a traumatic past, were in the same orphanage, experienced the loss of an important person (Shinichirou for Izana, Izana for Kakucho). Izana goes down deeper into the dark path, blames other people for his agony and strives to make others suffer too. But Kakucho doesn’t lose himself, takes it all upon himself and never wants to hurt other people (out of the context of a fight). His loyalty to Izana is more heartbreaking because you know that he’s struggled a lot (probably secretly) with his morals while being steadfast and loyal to Izana. I think he views himself as a bad person, not in the ‘guilty’ way but in the ‘I did what I had to do and so I’ll live with that’ kind of way. He’s just so steady and solid as a character I love him. You can be neutral about him but there’s no way to dislike this guy!!!
Well anon you asked for this!! My unhinged primal thoughts about Tenjiku (or at least the core members, I know Koko, Sanzu, Kisaki and Hanma were part of them too but they were never truly aligned with them)!! I’d love to hear your thoughts and opinion about them too if you don’t mind sharing!!
