A/N ::: @kazutora-kurokawa is at it again, inspiring me and stuff. To be fair, I've been looking for some redeeming quality about this asshat - and tbh, I've not found anything. I think he's a lost cause, guys. Also, ningyō = "doll" and "human shape" in Japanese. I hope I'm not offending anyone with my little nicknames for reader. It's not my intention. I'm just trying to make it cute <3.
C/W ::: Kisaki x F.reader, morning M->F oral , really sweet Kisaki (where the lies come into play), just gross. So sweet and full of lies it's gross. Don't @ me about the massive inaccuracies here lmao. I'm fully aware.
WC ::: Just over 1,100
MDNI UNDER THE CUT, PLEASE//THANKS!

“Mmmaaahhh, where do you think you're going? Don't leave bed yet. Please?" Kisaki was so needy in the mornings. It's been like this since the beginning of your relationship. "Stay. Just a few more minutes?" He begged.
"Kisa', a few more minutes is the same universal trick as just the tip. I know that if I stay here for a few more minutes that we'll fall back to sleep and the whole day will be fucked." You smiled down at him from where you stood at the edge of the bed.
"You know ... you, too, could be fucked, ningyō. Come on. I felt you rubbing your ass against my dick all night." Kisaki was trying so hard to get you to listen to him.
"I was freezing my ass off and scooting closer to you so I could warm up. You always leave the window open like a psychopath. I mean, y'know. You are. That's all I was doing. It wasn't sexual." Laughing at him you noticed he furrowed his brow and frowned.
"You just like teasing me." He turned over in bed and pulled the covers up to his chin.
"I am not a tease, Kisa'. You're just a big baby." You were starting to feel bad. So you sat down and pulled the covers back from his face and tucked your fingers under his chin instead and kissed him. "How. How do you always have the best breath in the morning. You're an anomaly. A complete freak of nature. You defy logic."
"Please come back to bed. I need you." Did his lip tremble? No. You're seeing things.
"I need you too, Kisa'. But we have work to do today. I'm already running late."
"Then come back to bed and we can be late together." He reached up and pulled your shirt, dragging you closer and closer to him. To be fair, you weren't really putting up a fight. Your legs were already against the bed and you had no resistance left in you.
"Okay, maybe a few more minutes. But if we fall back to sleep, you're making breakfast." You smiled and laid down next to him.
He buried his nose in your neck and absorbed your scent and heat against his face. His stubble tickled you, making you tip your head to the side to keep him out as best you could - even though you wanted all of him all over you.
"You smell so good, ningyō. Like home." He breathed in again, nuzzling deeper into you.
"Well, I am home, so it makes sense."
"You are my home. My family." Kisaki's voice was soft and quiet. You felt him move closer to you, but didn't think anything of it until you felt his teeth on your shoulder.
"Hey! What are you doing?" You tried to push him away, but he held you tighter.
"I just want a little taste." He whispered and sucked on your skin, marking you.
"Kisa'! No! We can't right now. We'll be late!"
"Then don't let me fuck you. All you have to do is make me believe you don't want to do this. That's all." He bit down a little harder, making you gasp.
"Stop! Stop or I won't let you touch me at all." You laughed so hard. He always made you laugh. This was a side of him that no one else got to bear witness to. The kind and gentle Kisaki. The playful Kisaki. The Kisaki that made your heart burst with love.
He pulled away and licked the mark he made on your skin. It was red and tender to the touch. You could tell it would be purple by the end of the day.
"Kisa'. Please." You couldn't stop laughing.
"Fine. You win." He sighed and rolled away from you. "Just kidding!" He got on his hands and knees and scooted down under the covers, working his way between your legs. "I'm hungry for a different kind of breakfast."
"Wait! Kisa'! You said you wouldn't fuck me! No!" You tried to grab his head and stop him from moving, but he was already under your shirt and pulling your panties down.
"I never promised anything. Just that I wouldn't fuck you. Not that I couldn't make you feel good." His tongue was soft and warm against your folds. "Just lay back and enjoy it. It won't take long." He hummed against your cunt and sucked on your clit, making your whole body shake.
"Kisa'. Noooo-hahahaaaa! Please. Not now. We'll be la- fuck, god." You couldn't stop yourself from grinding against his face. You were so weak for him. And he knew it.
He pushed your legs wider apart and moved his tongue faster, pressing it deeper into you, rubbing your clit just hard enough that you'd feel it but soft enough that you sought him out more.
Your back arched and your eyes rolled back. You gripped the sheets and felt yourself gush over his face as he sucked every drop of you from his lips.
He pulled himself out from under the covers and kissed you deeply.
You adore how he kisses you. It's perfect. His lips are perfect for yours. His tongue is perfect for yours. The taste of you on his tongue is perfect. It's all perfect.
"You're a brat." You whispered, pulling him closer to you.
"I'm your brat and you're perfect. Come on. Let's go to work." He laughed and jumped off the bed, dragging you with him. "And you know, you have to return the favor tonight. So be ready."
"Don't worry. I'll be ready." You kissed him again and held his hand as you walked to the shower together. "And I'll make sure to lock the window so you won't be able to open it and freeze me to death while we sleep."
"Fine. But you can't lock me out of your heart, ningyō." He smiled and turned on the water. "Let's hurry and get cleaned up. We have a day ahead of us."
You smiled at him and shook your head. Kisaki was something else. But you loved him. And you'd love him forever.
"Kisa', you know I'm never leaving you, right? You don't have to keep marking me like this. I'm already yours. Always."
"I just want to make sure everyone knows who you belong to, ningyō. That's all. Now, let's get ready. I'm starving." He pulled you into the shower and started washing your hair, massaging your scalp with his fingers and humming a tune that made you melt.
This man was really and truly something else entirely.

No worries, I agree with your rant! I'm not sure if Takaya hates women though but other than that I agree. I think Kisa's abuse and hospitalization is deliberately brushed off by the other characters because the family is so resigned to dealing with Akito and violence at her hands is something that's been normalized by not just Akito but the maids as well. Not excusing it, but maybe Akito's violent offenses are so frequent that no one cares to stand up to it anymore and they're so used to it.
I definitely agree that there's a ton of enabling going on with Akito and it infuriates me how, just like with Akito, the story ends without ever holding any of the adults (high mabudachi trio) or maids accountable for how much damage they could have mitigated but chose not too 😂. I'm personally not very satisifed with how the manga ended because I just feel like there were way too many loose ends that never really get addressed in a satisfying manner, both with Akito's individual actions herself, as well as all the abuse enabling and apologism that all the adults take part in.
Thank you for the response and I agree with your rant, though I'm not sure if Takaya hates women. Other than that, you have the problem with Akito nailed down and exactly, why does Rin never get to lash out at Akito and say the most hurtful things in response to what she did to her? She never gets personally called out by her victims and she should've had to hear what she did from them personally. Some part of me hates Tohru and feels like she doesn't deserve Rin.
I definitely feel you on Tohru... definitely the biggest pitfall of her character writing imo, wtf is this garbage of her becoming besties with her friends' and future husband's abuser and going on lunch dates with her? 😭 If i were Rin, I would straight up cut Tohru out of my life lmao, this as bad as befriending your bff's rapist imo. People defend it as "oh well Tohru and Akito are narrative foils and they relate to each other!" but imo it doesn't excuse Tohru committing the most blatant violation of trust and respect in a friendship ever. I guess everyone's personal values on friendship is different, but I personally take friendships very seriously and would not respect someone like Tohru if she was real. I firmly believe there are just people you do not go out of your way to befriend or make life long associations with if you have any amount of respect for your friends, and someone who caused your friends' life long trauma and committed violent, bodily crimes on them is mayhaps one of them. Obv it's good to show compassion and kindness to someone who desparately needs it in the moment, but it's weird af how Takaya has her entire story revolve around friendship and relationships, then have her MC, whos characterized as a kind and loyal person, not even respect the most BASIC requirements of it.

Lmao I know about almost all of your wips so this is hard BUT I don’t think I know about the Stage 5 Clingy Sleeper??? Tell me everything please! Plus talk about one wip of your choosing 💕
Hahahaha yeah you do! Half of them are your fault in some way too!
Stage 5 Clingy Sleeper
This is one that takes place immediately after the scene where Seth and Richie look like they're walking away from Kate. Seth realizes that he is 100% unable to do that, and Kate comes with them, including an overnight stop at a motel where...there's only one room with 2 beds. And Seth and Richie sure as shit aren't going to share. Also featuring: platonic shower sharing, Seth being the clingiest sleeper to ever cling, and a lot of recovery for the three of them.
Here's a bit from the beginning
Things got pretty close there, for a few minutes, but Seth’s never been so fucking happy to not be dead.
He’s alive, his brother is alive, Kate is alive.
Fuck, he’s even happy that Scott and Kisa made it out in one piece.
And even—
Wait, no. Fuck Carlos. He’s not happy Carlos is alive. He’s just a goddamn cockroach.
Kate and Richie get a stuck in Xibalba
In this one, after Kate walks through the gate, it closes behind her, giving Kisa, Seth, and Scott the opportunity to rip Amaru to bits and save the world. Seth gets a little lost, because his only 2 reasons for living are gone and Kisa takes it upon herself to help him get his shit back together and keep him at least somewhat functional, because she feels she owes Richie at least that for his role in getting her free from the Twister. One of the tags is literally 'Seth and Kisa are friends but they're not happy about it'. On the other side...Kate and Richie manage to escape after only a couple hours of being stuck in hell. Too bad a couple hours translates to six months topside. Oops?
Ask me about my WIPs

omg uo swearing and them bleeping it lmao
hana with the black cat, such a cool witch
aw the cats aren’t all over kyo anymore, that’s actually kinda sad

ummm ritsu dressing as a boy and cutting her hair is transphobic. her and misturu cheering over shigure no longer being her employer lmao
aw kagura is happy for tohru and kyo
aw kisa is so sad tohru is leaving :( but its cute that hiro was like its ok, you can cry your eyes out.
MOMIJI’S FIT WOW. aw i love that he doesn’t specify the gender of his future love, he just calls them significant other and uses them pronouns, cute!
kind of a weird transition from them talking about tohru to rin being upset about akito but i feel so bad for rin. she was probably hurt the most by akito and definitely needs more help than the others to move past that.
oh noooo people are gonna think kazuma and hana are together. KAZUMA IS A GOOD MAN HE WOULD NEVER

ahhhh yuki and kyo! they greeted each other normally and even had a little joke! i want them to be friendsssss.
OF COURSE IT WOULD BE YUKI THAT MADE ME CRY fuck. that was such a lovely thing to say to tohru. he finally admits to her just how much he cares and how blessed he was to have her in his life and how much she changed his life. and it KILLS me that tohru doesn’t really comprehend just how much everyone loves her.
i wanted tohru and yuki to hug but i also think the handshake is like saying now they are equals, like tohru has lifted him up to be at the same place as her.
KYO AND TOHRU BEING GRANDPARENTS FUCK I’M SO HAPPY FOR THEM

fruits basket has absolutely been my comfort show the past year and i’ll miss them a lot but i’ll just have to keep rewatching the episodes and reading the manga <3

What do you think is each character's favorite subject in school?
tohru: not a surprise but baby girl loves home ec!! kind of has to work her butt off studying for her other classes, so she gets to enjoy herself and do something she’s naturally super good at in home ec. loves making little snacks in class for her friends and then sharing them at lunch. the sewing unit takes her fashion game to the next level. when they do a project where they take care of fake babies, she definitely ends up caring for half of the class’s infants like they’re her own. kyo is her partner and everyone teases them about it but she still has a really nice time and thinks kyo would be a great dad :’)) highest home ec grade of all time in their school
kyo: says his favorite is PE but it’s actually math. gets a 5 on the AP calc exam. tells no one but tohru, who then tells everyone and kazuma throws a party and kyo is Not Pleased. isn’t a great math tutor though because he can’t really explain how he gets his answers—he just Knows. checks tohru’s homework for her before she turns it in (read: fixes all her wrong answers when she’s not looking so he can see her huge smile when she gets a good grade back. only feels a little bit guilty). watches math tedtalks. nerd disguised as a jock
yuki: favorite subject is lit!! bullshits his way through class discussions and papers without ever actually reading the books because he’s smart and charismatic. has a premium account on sparknotes. favorite class specifically was one on ancient greek literature and epic poetry—spent the entirety of the class critiquing heteronormative readings of the iliad and taking the piss out of other students because “achilles and patroclus are clearly gay if you have eyes”
kakeru: …...i’ll be real he doesn’t like school lmao. senioritis personified. on his phone during classes constantly. laptop open playing world of warcraft or candy crush or neopets. could not tell you anything the teacher said in the last hour. doesn’t take notes because “i’ve got it all up here yun-yun…..” but doesn’t actually do half-bad on tests. only reason he does homework is because he can pretend to study with yuki while actually just flirting with him. if there’s one subject he doesn’t hate it’s history because he “thinks the fight scenes are fun” (yuki: “you mean world war 1??” “yeah it was exciting”)
uo: autoshop. hates the stereotype that just because she’s a lesbian she must like tools and machinery and automotive tech.....having said that she is a lesbian and she does like tools and machinery and automotive tech. gets a 100 on her project where she fixes a busted up motorcycle, and now she has two motorcycles. all the boys in the class call her senpai and worship the ground she walks on. smells faintly like motor oil all the time but she Absolutely makes it work
hana: creative writing. school is not her thing but she thrives in creative writing because her creativity is 100/10 and her stories are absolutely off the walls. excels in writing spooky yet also homoerotic ghost stories in particular. reads them aloud in class with the lights turned off and a flashlight illuminating her face. has made students cry out of fear. shigure beta-reads her writing. likes to subtly imply that her stories actually happened to fuck with kyo. it works
momiji: band/orchestra!! all the older students lose their minds over how well he can play. first chair violinist from day one. has a solo in every concert; tohru sits front row and films them, always cries. he’s the life of the party at Band Camp(™). even the grumpy bass clarinetists like him. doesn’t get in trouble when he talks waaaaay too much during rehearsal because the teacher loves him
haru: mr space cadet himself isn’t much of a science guy but LOVES astronomy. gets Ds on pretty much every test but he doesn’t care because his mind is expanding. buys a super nice telescope so he can look at constellations at 3 in the morning. develops very specific opinions about each planet. stans the moon. gets really into sleeping at last’s astronomy-themed album. becomes that guy whose personality is “i like space” until the class is over and then he never talks about it again
rin: art! she takes several art classes throughout high school. really loves drawing and painting, but also really likes doing ceramics projects because she likes working with her hands :’)) does a watercolor portrait for tohru as a graduation gift but gets really flustered when tohru sobs into her arms over how beautiful it is. also secretly likes doing little doodles of her and haru—he sees them once in her sketchbook and will never let her live it down
kagura: says her favorite is PE and it actually is PE. goes ham for capture the flag, tends to play too rough when capturing and gets taken out of the game. only person who is actually good at volleyball so she is constantly spiking, setting, and diving for the ball all in the same game, while the rest of her team just kind of fumbles around and tries to stay out of her way. gets first place every time they run the mile even though it’s definitely not a competition. definitely knows her mile time even though it is not a timed activity
hiro: this kid screams history nerd, but like Male History Nerd with a niche interest in military history and very specific opinions about how *insert historical figure* wasn’t actually all that bad. gets his ass handed to him in class discussions on the daily but won’t admit it. is genuinely really smart and has Better Opinions by the time he graduates, so he starts using his history nerd powers For Good as an adult—as in, arguing about inaccurate historical memes on facebook in his free time
kisa: choir. singing stresses her out, but she’s figured out that she can just mouth the words and no one can tell that she’s not actually singing! loves being in the group and hearing the beautiful music around her :’)) everyone is in awe of how cute she is in her lil choir robe. tohru comes to all of kisa’s concerts as well and films them from the front row, also while crying
machi: woodshop. gets sawdust on her clothes and loves the smell. obsessed with digging through piles of splintering and warped scrap wood. loses her damn mind when she gets to use the jigsaw. really enjoys making like…misshapen birdhouses and crooked tables, but woodshop is mostly participation grades anyway so her teacher gives her A’s on all of her grotesque wood creations. she is at peace and is One with the Wood. doesn’t wear safety goggles while chopping wood because she likes Risk
kimi: loves speech & drama. emphasis on the drama. it’s a chance to talk for a long time and everyone has to look at her and listen to her or else they’ll fail!! which is how she likes it. goes three minutes over for every speech but the teacher can’t get her to pause long enough to stop her. comes to auditions in a full professionally-made costume. knows her lines and everyone else’s
nao: AP statistics on the pre-accounting track. has known he wants to be an accountant since he was in diapers. does slightly below average in the class. still studies accounting in college because it’s too big a part of his personality to quit at this point. becomes an accountant. never quite feels fulfilled

All right, so now that I finally digested the final a little I have some random messy thoughts about Fruits Basket 2019. It got really long lol, but this has been stuck in my head for a while so I needed to get it out!
Honestly, it was a very good adaptation and I’m still in awe I was able able to see the whole manga animated. Fruits Basket is pretty important to me, as I read it for the first time when I was around twelve and it was definitely one of the series that impacted me the most — the way it tackles themes of cycle of abuse, loneliness, grief and moving forward still feel very special to me even now (I briefly wrote a post about it months ago after rereading the manga), so of course I was delighted upon hearing the reboot announced and for the most part, it didn’t disappoint. I’d never truly thought I’d be able to see characters like Rin or Machi actually move on screen in my lifetime so in a way it still feel surreal lmao (RIP to Komaki though). It was really refreshing to revisit the story in that way, especially given amusingly enough I am myself in the middle of some big changes in my life where I have to leave things behind so it felt sort of... well, I won’t say empowering per se, but quite encouraging and satisfying to watch Furuba, and especially its final, at this timing, in a way. It wasn’t perfect, there are certainly a lot of flawed directive choices that I question and unfortunately quite some important cut contents — but even at its lowest it stayed all in all good. I’m genuinely a bit stunned there are people who thinks the entire thing is worthless or a failure, because man, I have seen what a bad anime adaptation looks like, and Fruits Basket 2019 definitely isn’t one. Natsuki Takaya herself was clearly very invested and satisfied in that adaptation — I mean, just the fact she drew arts for every single episodes or for the season 3 ending really shows that I think. And while there’s a part of me who will always have a soft spot for the 2001 anime, there’s no contest that the 2019 one is the superior one and more representative of the original manga as a whole.
I believe some people really don’t realize how... uncommon it is to get such a consistently good-looking and complete anime adaptation for a shojo manga? Shojo really aren’t lucky in that prospect usually; they rarely get animated, and when they do they’re usually very bland or outright bad, or they get one short season of like 13 episodes that never receive any follow-ups — even shojo considered like classics tend to get poor treatment, unless they’re Sailor Moon of course or a long-running magical girls franchise like Precure (and even then we could have a discussion about the way Sailor Moon’s treated compared to say Dragon Ball for example, but that’s another topic entirely). So yeah it is quite awesome we were able to get this kind of anime adaptation that covers the full manga with good quality from start to finish, and I am so, so glad it exists and that it managed to revive and makes the series so popular again. (Hopefully its success means we’ll be able to get more good anime adaptation of shojo manga from now on!)
But yeah, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t problems with it and I also understand why some of the manga fans had issues. We were kind of hyped with the fact this would be a complete adaptation and in the end we only got a... sort-of-complete one lol. The art and animation stayed fine during the run (there certainly were some episodes that were uhhh, lacking in that sense, but that’s just how it is sometimes with productions and budget), but I admit I was a bit letdown regarding the direction, where it often seemed… a bit uncreative or heavy-handed. There was some very beautiful and smart shots here and there, but on the whole I really had an issue with the adaptation failing to actually take more ambitious decisions on its visual aspect, especially compared to the pretty pannelling of the manga — and when it did take these decisions it just was… kind of obnoxious and in-your-face, like the show is trying to hold the watcher’s hand (with unnecessary things like Kyo’s father record player derailing or the whole big ropes symbolizing the curse that often slapped you all over the screen, which usually just made me want to roll my eyes because of how annoying it felt.) Multiple people also pointed out the overdramatization of some scenes like the Kyo and Tohru’s confrontation at the end of season 1 or Akito and Ren’s fight which was, indeed, not very good and a weird choice. Fruits Basket is already a pretty dramatic show and these scenes are already intense, there was no need for such over-the-top theatrical display of emotions that only made them comes off as comedic. I’m probably nitpicking here but it also bothered me some characters’ expressions didn’t feel properly retranscribed (Shigure especially, whose characterization depends a lot on that, really suffered from this), or that odd habit of making some big panorama plans instead of focusing on the faces and bodies, which particularly sucks during emotional scenes (like the backgrounds were pretty I guess, but that’s not what was important here lmao).
Also that might be just a personal thing, but can I point out that the openings were pretty disappointing to me... They're not bad, but they all looked so... bland. The songs are fine but the rest feel so uninspired and it's kind of sad... I dunno, I wasn't asking for much but I just think they could've done more than just scrolling each character looking vaguely melancholic or making them walk randomly one after another :/ The endings have at least pretty illustrations and I'm okay with them (I liked what they did with Kyoko’s photo in season 3 too), but the OPs kind of feel as if they ran out of budget and ideas for them or something. I kind of feel the same with the OST as well, where they’re generally fine but were a bit lackluster, and sometimes… they were kind of played at bad times? I remember the Rin episode in season 2 were the music felt a bit out of place and took me out of the immersion, which is a shame cause it was otherwise a pretty good episode. But that might just be a me-thing here lol. The voice actors were awesome though! (The Japanese ones, at least, I didn’t watch any other dubs). I’ve said it before but special kudos to Maaya Sakamoto cause damn she’s so perfect as Akito, and Shimazaki as Yuki and Toyosaki as Rin truly delivered too. I didn’t know Manaka Iwami at all but I was really impressed by her Tohru, especially in season 3 — she really was good at capturing her character’s subtle emotional turmoils (I think she makes a better Tohru than Yui Horie too, although I admit I missed Horie a little lol.)
Anyway, on the topic of lack of ambition, that might be an unpopular opinion but there’s also the fact that I’m sad they didn’t actually... try to change or add more original scenes. By which I mean, obviously we had some changes, but not ones that were really interesting (when they’re not actively detrimental to the story). For example, I was really hoping that we’d be able to get at least one original episode focused on Ritsu (and Mitsuru too why not) in season 2 or 3, or on Kagura or Kisa; I dunno, it would’ve been a good occasion to give something more to the characters that got sidelined in the original manga, or add some moments that would’ve been nice to develop like about Akito post-cliff confrontation, but we never got that. And well, that makes sense now that we know they seemingly had an episode restriction (at least on season 3), but, yeah, that’s still a shame. Honestly in the end Ritsu’s character made even less sense in the anime, because like, it was nice they tried to adapt his introduction episode so that it feels less “you have to adapt to gender norms to feel better about yourself,” (the gender non-confirmity is definitely one of the bits that aged the less well in FB) but then they still made him cut off his hair and give his feminine clothes to Kagura at the end so why lol. (And speaking of his episode introduction, I dislike that they cut off his conversation with Tohru after the suicide attempt, not only for Ritsu but also for Tohru cause it is one of the small instances bringing up her issues that is set up early on and that is crucial to her, but I’ll come back to this later.)
And now about the biggest problem to me being, the cut content and episodes rearangement. So, just so we’re clear, I definitely don’t think an anime adaptation needs to be a page-by-page adaptation of the manga to be good. Every decent adaptation needs to have changes, and the ones that tries to just follow the source material without any heart often tend to get pretty bad. So changes are good! Cut content are needed sometimes. But in Furuba 19, it really... wasn’t the case.
And the most unfortunate thing being that the one suffering the most from this is the show’s main character herself, Tohru.
So, obviously other characters also got done dirty by this; Yuki and Machi’s relationship was so incredibly shifted in the background and rushed it’s almost funny. I’m one of the people who thinks that, while I do think they’re cute, I definitely agree on the fact their relationship was a bit underdeveloped in the manga — and that Machi’s character especially suffered as a result by being a bit reduced to just "Yuki’s love interest" when she was a character with so much more to offer (and as a whole I also tend to agree with the fact that Yuki probably didn’t need a romance at all and that his arc is more meaningful while focusing on his platonic relationships, but that’s another topic entirely) — but man, if the manga already underdevelopped them, then ohhh boy, the anime just completely dropped the ball. It feels very odd because to me it seemed like season 2 was taking their time with setting them up, so if they knew they had only 13 episodes for season 3 then they should’ve started the changes there; instead we got 1 nice Yuki/Machi/Kakeru episode, and then it’s like "Yep, they’re in love, just trust me." (It does makes me wonder if season 3 wasn’t originally supposed to be longer but then got restrained because of budget or covid or something…) Kakeru also very much suffered because of them cutting off his girlfriend and his complicated relationship with Tohru… Now, to be honest, I’ve always found the Kakeru/Komaki/Tohru subplot pretty... contrived and useless, and Komaki’s not so much a character more than a device for Kakeru’s development, but it does have some good moments relevant to the story’s themes (I like the ‘‘you can’t play suffering olympics with people’s pain’’morale) and it is important to his character (and Komaki is cute, I admit), so it was still sad they shafted it entirely. (Also I kind of like the tense relationship between Tohru and Kakeru. The fact they both seem to not appreciate each other even afterwards feel sort of refreshing even if it’s never explored unfortunately orz.) I was still surprised they didn’t actually try to make a Komaki cameo at the end? Cause I think it would’ve fitted and Kakeru’s girlfriend had already been mentioned in season 2 but... for some reason they... didn’t. (Mayyybe we’ll get an OAV like with Kyoko and Katsuya? Who knows.)
One scene that was skipped/rearranged that I’m very bitter over is the whole Tohru/Kagura confrontation and Kagura/Rin scene — it might not seem like much, but the moment of Tohru refusing to forgive Kagura is very important, and I was pretty annoyed they turned Rin’s trauma response to Kagura’s violence and her subsequent apology/hug to a gag, it legit felt tasteless. The Tohrin scene they removed at the very end too was frustating; it was great they managed to fit in the "Rin doesn’t want to forgive Akito" bit at least (I was afraid they’d cut it off entirely), but it was so essential for her to say to Tohru, not to Haru and Momiji (plus the way they put it in felt very random and awkwardly placed there, when they were initially talking about Tohru before orz). OH AND the Akito/Hana friendship too! Yeah I know it’s not a Big deal but I absolutely love the little glimpses of their friendship and it’s very important to me so I’m disappointed over them not including the ‘Ah-chan’ scene… (It was kind of weird that the show sort-of implied Hana and Kazuma got together too cause that’s… not the vibe at all from the manga… oh well.)
Most people I’ve seen generally only bring up season 3 regarding the cuts/rearangement because it’s the most obvious and the biggest offender, but I personally think there were already problems with season 2 and 1. At first glance I didn’t have much issue with some of the rearrangement, because early Furuba can indeed be pretty episodic, but thinking back on it as a whole I think it might’ve been better to leave some stuff, like Hana and Uo’s episodes for example, to season 2 (I do wonder if they did this specifically so the reboot would offer original content and differ from 2001 early on...) and cut off other not-so-important things from S1 & S2 — because as a result season 2 kind of suffer a bit by being The Yuki Season, which, for as much as I love Yuki, did end up being a bit annoying and made his development feel less natural and gradual, as well as the fact it sidelined the other characters a little and left them with not much conclusion in its final. So this added to how much they ended up cutting in season 3, it makes the show as a whole feels really unequal. I think they did overall a good job in season 3 with what they had, and they really nailed some of the dramatic and Kyoru moments (the sheets scene, cliff confrontation and post-hospital confession were practically perfect), but it is a shame that it ended up as an extremely marathoned emotional roller-caster rather than a more well-paced watch that we would’ve had if it had been 20 or so episodes. (I know others argued that season 3 was what it was because there wasn’t enough content left to cover for 22 or 24 episodes, but I disagree and even if there weren’t, it would’ve been the perfect occasion to add original episodes then. But I think it was more of a budget and Covid issue personally.)
But anyway, all of this isn’t actually what I’m the most annoyed with (and YES that’s a already a lot lmao), those are stuff I can live with, but like I said earlier the most problematic is what they cut off from Tohru’s character. And that indeed includes her parents’ backstory.
So, just so I get this out of the way; yes, I do understand why people were relieved to not see Kyoko and Katsuya’s relationship play out on screen, and yes the age gap and teacher-student thing is creepy and I do kind of wish it hadn’t been written that way. (Though I was a bit amused by people who thought we didn’t get the backstory because of the questionable age gap when, uh... you know I very much doubt the anime industry has an issue with that. Like, to start with, we wouldn’t have had Uo and Kureno’s romance if that was the case (even if Uo and Kureno is less problematic, it’s still the same basis of a underage high school girl/20+ adult man relationship), and second there was a literal romcom anime about a high school girl and an adult man that was broadcasted at the same time as Furuba season 3 lmao. So nah, it wasn’t there the problem to them, it was just time and episode restriction, which was pretty much confirmed with the announcement of the OAV focused on them.)
So, Kyoko and Katsuya is definitely Problematic and I agree on their relationship being uncomfortable; however, I’m a bit baffled that people were literally cheering on not having that part in the show, because it is... it is not just like a small bit of family trivia, it is Extremely important and actively essential to Tohru’s character and Fruits Basket’s themes and narrative as a whole. It’s very important to understand Kyoko’s character, of course; to humanize her and finally present her as a very flawed person and not just the idealized mother that Tohru project upon her, and it is extremely important simply to understand Tohru herself as well; to understand where her way of thinking, her trauma and attitude stems from, and this in a way that just isn’t possible to see with the little fragments of that flashback we got or the bits of Kyo and Kyoko’s interactions.
See, Tohru’s character is principally constructed around two things; her grief over her mother and her almost-pathological selflesness and people-pleaser needs that comes from her abandonment issues and loneliness, and her arc is very much about letting go of both of these things and finally moving forward and letting her life change. There’s this perception of Tohru I see sometimes that she’s not a very interesting character especially compared to others like Yuki or Kyo, or that she ‘‘stays the same kindhearted, naive girl from start to finish,’’ and while I deeply disagree with this I know where it comes from. The thing with Tohru is that she is firstly an extremely emotionally repressed character, and so a lot of her depth and development is made through small, gradual details scattered throughout the manga. It’s done in such a way that except for some obvious scenes those small, apparently insignificant moments are easy to miss or disregarded, and unfortunately it is a lot of these details that the 2019 anime cut, or rearanged in a way that feel less impactful or makes less sense; such as, like I pointed out earlier, her conversation with Ritsu after his suicide attempt. As I’ve seen others point out, this result in altering Tohru’s portrayal and rendering her character mostly about her romance, undercutting and downplaying all of her small, subtle character moments and developments, and miss a bit the second part of the story where the narrative actively challenge the ‘savior/therapist/mom’ that other characters and Tohru herself projected upon her.
And as a result it also means undermining things like her parallel and relationship to Akito, which idealistically should’ve been slowly built up throughout the last season but because of how rushed season 3 was in the end felt a little flat. (Akito’s character in general had some issues also because of the unequal pacing and rearranged scenes, though admittedly I think this was also an issue present in the original manga.) Kyo’s character and his romance with Tohru is the one element that managed to get out of this mostly unscathed (although Kyo also does suffer a bit from it), but because of what was removed from Tohru’s character it still inevitably impacted them by making their characters as individuals lacking. It’s not like it is a complete failure, mind you; I think the anime at least did a decent job at showing Tohru is Not Okay even at the beginning in season 1 (they certainly did a better job at it than the 2001 one lol) and managed to roughly portray her issues well enough overall, but it is just… lacking in the subtlety and nuances that, to me, makes her character and writing really special and unique.
(This post explains what I’ve tried to say here in a much more eloquent and better way that I ever could, and this all put into perspective what I basically love so much about Tohru and Fruits Basket in general.)
And, you know, it would’ve been sad but comprehensible with any other character, but here we’re talking about the story’s literal protagonist, which is why it is the part of the adaptation that makes me feel the most bitter. Tohru and her story is truly amazing and well-written, the thing I was looking forward to the most with this reboot — and while I do understand the episode restriction and I do believe they still did their best with what they had — her arc still deserved to receive a full proper adaptation, not a kind-of-half one.
So, yes, I am at least glad they’ll adapt Kyoko and Katsuya’s story in OAV, but the fact that it will never be included in the actual main narrative is still actively detrimental to it, and it will never have the same effect that if it had been played out before the Kyoru sheets scene where it should’ve been. (I hope they also won’t cut the fact that their story is narrated by Kyo, because that is also a very important detail for both Kyo and the story, but I have the feeling they will…)
Welp, that was quite a long, messy rambling. Not sure if anyone will actually read all of it but if you did then congrats lol. I feel in the end I’ve been really harsh and negative with the reboot… I do love it a lot! If someone asked me I would wholeheartedly recommend it (though I guess I would still argue to read the manga first if you really want to experience the story in all its nuances). I think they truly did an impressive job — even with season 3, which a lot of its episodes were beautifully done and did make me tear up a few times lol. I’m just sad it couldn’t actually offer a better, more nuanced delivery of the story’s depths and of one of my favorite manga protagonists that means a lot to me. But that’s an adaptation that so many fans wanted for years and I’m happy and grateful it’s here cause Fruits Basket deserved at least that much!

fb manga lb - chs 86-90
Yuki knows that Kyo and Tohru love each other! “His eyes were saying ‘I love you’. And she too, only to him...” <333
Everytime Yuki gets upset, I get upset right along with him, I swear.
You’ll get there, bby. <3
LMAO AHHHH Kyo’s teasing Tohru!!
YUKI’S LIKE “ARE YOU TWO DONE YET JFC I WANNA GET BY”
PFFT Kyo’s embarrassed now that Yuki saw him and Tohru basically flirting. Sweetie, I’m sure there’s A LOT that he sees that he doesn’t mention, don’t act like no one can see what’s going on! XD
I’m loving Yuki’s development so much holy shit. He just wants Tohru to be happy, and if it’s with Kyo, he’s fine with that. And from what I’m seeing here, he wants Kyo to get his shit together so that he can be happy with her, too. jsjfjfjsf tell me that these two are finally friends by the end of the series. Or at least on good terms!
“Wrong. The one who’s Prince isn’t me, but... the one who’s trying to run away.” ROFL HE THREW KYO UNDER THE BUS.
Ooh what was this flashback with Kyo and a woman? Kyoko? Did he tell her how much he hates Yuki?
Damn, Kyo just put his fist through a window. Bby pls calm down.
sfksfsf TOHRU NOTICED KYO’S INJURY
Tohru’s blush is adorable!
Momiji, Hiro, and Kisa are starting to grow up oh no. ;A; my precious babies.
PRINCE KYO LOOKS SO CUTE SJFSJFJSJSF
They’re all so bad at this, I’m dying sjfjsfj
No but is it weird that I want them to go off-script and for Kyo to ask Tohru to dance and the audience legit loves it? Come on don’t fail me now.
“You’ve come to ask my elder sister to marry you.” HOYL SHIT IM SCDREAMING
“locking yourself away in the castle until you die?” Well if that doesn’t hit a little too close to home....
THEY’RE BLUSHING
lmfao Yuki being the genie and being like “bitch GRAB YOUR OWN HAPPINESS” we love to see it!
aw boooo that’s over too quickly! I wanted to see more! XDD It was so cute though!
hahahaha Kazuma saw!
PFFT HARU TOLD.
OHO. Is Kyo aware that Tohru knows now?
lool Hiro revealing that he knows Haru and Rin are dating I’m dying poor boy. And now Tohru knows.
YUKI CARES WHAT MACHI THINKS OF HIM SJFSJFJSFJSJF
AHH Kyo took the stuff from Tohru
I’m a bit confused by his train of thought here at the end??? What’s my boy feeling conflicted about? That Tohru’s becoming aware of his confinement, that she could possibly feel the same way about him and that scares him? All of it? GAH.

Hello I crave the angst 😈 Can i get 42 for Kisa & Kai, 10 for Kahliir & Jhinn, 45 for Kisa and Auri, and Bonus 32 for anyone you want (or all)?
There are dynamic spoilers here but no plot spoilers hehe!! From this post!
42. if one of them gets injured, who worries more?
Kisa and Kaidan - It would be Kaidan! Being the biggest guy in the group, the only one actually armored from head to toe (everyone else is in leather or light armor), and has the most exposure in harsh barbaric battles, feels like it’s up to him to protect everyone. Sure, if he gets wounded it’s no biggie, he’ll just shrug it off, BUT if it’s the healer’s who’s wounded, he’ll feel bad for not being able to protect Kisa (even when Kisa will most likely shrug it off, too. Heck, she’ll even heal faster than him LMAO) But this isn’t due to a lack of trust, it’s just Kaidan holds himself to impossible standards—all because he’s desperate to atone for the things he did when he’s still a cultist. :))
10. if something already happened to tear them apart, what would make them come back together? is it even possible?
Kahliir and Jhinn - Very possible! (I haven’t expanded on their characters much yet but I will!) These two are always meant to be together, like yin and yang. That was the strongest aspect of their design, that their dynamic is so rooted to one another it’s impossible to turn them against each other without the use of mind controlling elements. They’re not incomplete without the other but they live up to their fullest potentials as a team. Whatever tore them apart, they’ll surely overcome and realize that they can do better. No fancy meetings, they’ll just meet halfway and shake hands and walk into the sunset again. Except the sunset is an oblivion portal and those daedras better prepare their asses.
45.  who would be more likely to save who?
Kisa and Auri - KYAAAAA~! <3 I get all fuzzy thinking about these two TwT -- to answer, it’s Kisa! <3 Don’t be mistaken, Auri isn’t a damsel in distress in the story, but Auri’s fighting style can be very easily countered depending on the enemy’s focus. And since Kisa is more or less a micro-managing healer, she’ll be the first to push her companions out of harm’s way or redirect the threat away. Also also also Auri would confide in Kisa whenever she’s emotionally down and Kisa takes her on beautiful caves and mountain views to lift her up and Auri def falls for that and mmhmmm I’m not spoiling anymore teehee~ U////U
32. who would be the first to say they hate the other? would they mean it?
RUMARIN!!! THEN KAIDAN!!! Rumarin AND Kaidan to each other and to everyone! XD XD XD These two butt heads so much and verbally fights every now and then but would never resort to physical fights (unless Rumarin’s feeling brave enough HEEHE) They’re both petty enough to yell “I HATE Y’ALL” or “I HOPE YOU HIT YOUR TOES HARD JERK” at anyone or everyone when they’re ticked off but will never mean it. Funny how normal they are on one on one but are absolute tsunderes when confronting the whole team. XD
(That’s it, thank you for asking! XD)

Each of the Sohmas as parents?
omgggg okay okay okay this is gonna get shippy yall lets go for it
kyo/tohru: single handedly the best parents of all of them, easily. these two struggled to get their shit together enough to confess but once they did??? babies were coming soon and it was no big deal (they are the only ones who can say this). they were the youngest parents, i think; i personally like the idea that they were planning on getting married right outta hs anywayyy but also got pregnant before the wedding oops O.O anyway everyone goes to them for advice bc theyre just. the best parents mfdahjfdka
yuki/machi: absolute disASTER parents but somehow ended up w a good kid anyway (mutsuki is a deLIGHT). they call kyoru like every other day trying to figure out how the hell to parent. kyoru invites them to dinner a lot just to check up on them. yuchi wasnt planning on kids i dont think--never once regretted mutsuki, of course, they love him to bits--but the idea of another one makes them go. hhhhhhhhhhh
haru/rin: fun dad/mom who wants to enforce rules but cant quite manage to to the T. haru is super great with the kids, probably plays super smash brothers with them, always the “safe option” but like, if they ever have any real problem they wanna talk about they go to rin, cause she always knows what to do to fix the problem. she gets a little frustrated sometimes w her chaotic family but also very easily gets overwhelmed by love for them!
akito/shigure: SHIGURE IS A GOOD DAD. he loves kids to BITS even if he suppresses it to look cool for a while; tohru and kisa are basically his daughters at this point (aside but im kinda writing a fic about this) and once he gets over his own ego hes the kind of dad to tease his kids a lot, but he gives really good advice at the right moments. for akki, kids is a terrifying concept, but its really good for her! she learns a lot about love when she has kids, about how not every love is twisted by abuse and romance and sex; interacting with her kids helps her figure out the joys of a pure parent/child relationship; im also sure shes happy raising a kid better than her mother did, even if shes worried shes going to mess it up.
hatori/mayu: hatori is an awkward dad but hes got a lot of love! his kids and wife tease him a lot but he takes things very seriously and is always willing to defend his kids, protect them if he ever needs to. mayu is the more hands-on of the two; she takes care of all the day-to-day, interpersonal stuff (its easy for her, shes really good at interacting with kids), but their dad is very important to them too, and they can tell he loves them!
kimi/momiji: parenting also terrifies kimi! but she’s actually quite good at it, once she gets into the swing of things. shes especially close with her daughter(s), they have that kind of “my mom is my best friend” thing going on, and it means a lot to her. momiji is the most charming dad ever, and makes lots of bad puns; hes also very approachable, loving family all around!
kureno/uo: these two dummies love each other a lot and have four kids, according to the discord! i love it anyway uo as a mom is a lot like kyoko, but w some more personal stories, of course; she keeps it real with her kids. kureno DOTES on his daughters but he is also kind of awkward lmaoo. its okay tho they can tell his heart is in it.
ayame/mine: these kids have the BEST dress up parties on the block oh my god!! this is also a very loving and open family, and tbhhh ayame and mine are both regina george’s mom (you know what im talking about). most of the couples are jealous of ayamine bc they never once! have a fight! bc aya somehow missed the “incapable of proper communication” gene that the other sohmas have!
ritsu/mitsuru: i put these guys on here because i wanna make it clear that i think theyre cute and forever couples but oh my god they would never have kids, too scary oml. once they get over their nerves a bit though, they visit the other couples’ kids a lot! they like to be the teasing aunts lmao, and they feel a bit more confident around younger kids owo
kagura/kunimitsu: is it just me or is kagura kind of a pta mom?? owo she has the best intentions i love her but shes v passionate about fighting for her kids. kunimitsu supports her in every way and is the much calmer, more rational of the two--but they both love their kids very much!
hiro and kisa: nah these guys are the kids they aint parents yet.
this was really fun! tysm for the ask; everyone, feel free to send me asks! owo

I was tagged by @callumtvrner (thanks! this looks fun!)
Rules:
Go to Random.Org/List (might have to go the site manually, links a little wonky at times)
Type in 15 characters and then write them in order below! (I stuck to three fandoms personally, the ones I do rewatches on, which was well over 15 characters, and went from there.)
1. Mom/Dad: Sophie Deaveraux (Leverage) Can totally see it. She’d make an awesome mom... after she joins the Leverage team that is, and its probably best that I’m already grown.
2. Your Sibling: Richie Gecko (FDtD) I’ll take it! Just don’t let him kill Mom.
3. Grandma/Grandpa: Britta Perry (Community) For some reason, this really makes me smile. She’s going to be one weird grandma, in a mostly good way.
4. Haunts You: Pierce Hawthorne (Community) .... I’m going to need an exorcist.
5. Significant Other: Shirley (Community) She makes a great mom, but I’m not sure how good a spouse she makes, at least based on the end of her relationship with Andre. She’s awesome and I love her, but I’m not sure if we could make it work as life long partners. But at least I know there will always be tasty baked goods around.
6. Your Ex: Jeff Winger (Community) Love the guy, but glad he’s firmly in the ex category, because me and him? No.
7. Your Best Friend: Tara Cole (Leverage) Perks of being friends with a grifter: they are so good at reading you they are always exactly what you need (if they choose to be) Cons: They are so used to being someone else, you never know if you truly know the real them.
8. Proposed to You: Kisa (FDtD) YES! Sorry, Shirley, but we’re getting a new roommate... and we might have to move to Mexico. She has people to lead and culebras don’t like the cold. We can homeschool the boys.
9. Your Boss: Abed Nadir (Coumminty) I have a feeling he’d make a fairly bad boss, but the good news is that after each film I’d get a break, so maybe it won’t be so bad.
10. Random Person You Drink With at a Bar: Nate Ford (Leverage) Of course, where else would you find him? :P
11. Your Rival: Jim Sterling (Leverage) Oh no. It’s Word of God canon that Sterling never loses. I’m screwed.
12. Gave You Your First Kiss: Kate Fuller (FDtD) I’m oddly pleased and a little disturbed by this. Was there time travel involved?
13. Drink and Sing Karoke With: Alec Hardison (Leverage) Yes! And it was a blast and we will do it again.
14. Played 7 Minutes in Heaven With: Troy Barnes (Community) lmao, all I can picture is him not realizing what that means, and we spend the whole time playing games like the closet is a mini Dreamatorium.
15. Gave You Your Favorite Dessert: Freddie Gonzalez (FDtD) Ok... can’t exactly see it, but OK. Does this mean he and I are friends? I’d like us to be friends.
I tag... @evanberries, @thestraggletag, @bethanyactually, @crystallinee-waters, and whoever else wants to do it!

opinions on each of the zodiacs (furuba)
i rly was ready to give my thoughts on every astrology sign but alright lets do this
yuki: i feel like i dont have to tell yall how much i love him he’s my baby and he’s been my favorite since i was in 5th grade dghdfkgdf. i’m year of the rat which is v exciting to me. i identify a lot with him on a lot of things so it can be hard sometimes to be unbiased dfjkgdf
hatsuharu: ABSOLUTE BICON i love him soooo much. in general im not SUPER thrilled about the heavyhanded mood jokes made about him (or other chars in fruits basket - its just comedy im not rly into and feels close to ableist lmao) but thats not his fault. i’m softest about him when he’s quiet and sincere :(
kisa: that’s my BABY im so excited to see her in the anime :’( i didnt care as much abt her as a kid but rereading as an adult i rly screamed i wanna take care of her
momiji: ANOTHER BIG FAVE the way they handled his backstory in this most recent episode was so good and i absolutely cried, Again. fun fact when i was little i named a hamster after him and also i had a sticker of him and hatsuharu on my first flip phone
hatori: ngl i think hatori is so funny he’s so fucking scary at first purely from miscommunication. just rly does not emote well but doing his absolute best. he also breaks my fucking heart and i feel like its not addressed enough how horrific being the one designated to erase people’s memories is just absolutely horrifying…my poor man
ayame: OK IM. TORN ON AYAME. i think its hard not to have nostalgic affection for him when he’s such a riot and i loved him a lot as a kid. and even speaking critically in some ways i think it’s actually a fantastic writing choice (i.e. difficult sibling dynamic w/ yuki) and while it hurts me i appreciate it a lot. on the other hand i struggle to not hold his uh, issues against him when it comes to his advances on tohru, joking or not. + is he a gay icon? yes. is it incredibly homophobic? oh god yes
RIN: RIN RIN RIN LIGHT OF MY LIFE MY DARLING RIN she’s one of the best parts of the manga imo and i’m so excited to see her again esp w tohru :’(
hiro: oh ngl i never liked hiro fkghdfjk idr why rly i guess i’ll see when he shows up. i think he was just a jerk but also hes a baby so
ritsu: ritsu’s my baby she’s doing only her best even if her best is extremely off the fucking rails. wish she was less of a transmisogynistic joke but im thankful that pairing the spares in the end meant she got a gf and gave gay people our rights
kureno: if takaya had just made kureno ten years younger or not done whatever the hell that was he’d be fine. unfortunately.
shigure: bastard man who has been very helpful to the children in his care but unfortunately must go to prison
kagura: I WANT TO LIKE KAGURA SO BAD BUT SHE MAKES IT SO HAAARD i think she’s a lot more lovable later in the series bc her antics r toned down so im hopeful we’ll get to that point soon in the anime :(
kyo: MOST WONDERFUL BABY BOY i was not a kyo stan as a kid bc i was a yuki stan and not smart enough to love both but now i rly rly do. there’s so much going on with him and i think takaya rly nailed the “tortured rowdy boy” type so well while keeping him gentle and lovable and im so excited to see him soften as the anime progresses
akito: i appreciate akito for who they are and the role in the story they have and i hope they can heal after everythings said and done but i feel like that requires being very very far away from every single sohma tbqh. also every time i see someone talk too fondly abt them esp in a sexy way i feel like im dying

So in honor of the Fruits Basket reboot who would you say are your fave Furuba characters and ships (canon) and why? Least fave Furuba characters and canon ships and why?
Hey Anon! Sorry it took me so long to reply to this~ Saturdays are mad at work oof
Real talk though, like, Fruits basket was literally my very first anime that I knew was an Anime. I watched Pokemon, Cardcaptors, Digimon, Sailormoon etc etc as a kid, but only because they were cool ‘cartoons’ - Fruits Basket was what I bought as my first ever manga from a local bookshop after I found out what anime and manga was. I fell in love. I ended up collecting the DVDs whenever I raised up enough pocket money to buy each one.
I watched the hell out of those DVDs.
Long story short: Fruits Basket is probably one of the most nostalgic anime for me. I have many many happy memories of excitedly buying the DVDs and finding out about what happened in the manga after the show ended. Seeing it get a reboot has been so amazing
Back to your question though (wow, I derailed myself so badly there ahaha)
Fave Furuba characters:
I think I’ll surprise absolutely nobody who has ever met me or seen my blog by saying Tohru and Kyo. I love themmm
Tohru is the queen of cinnamon rolls. Pure. Wholesome. But I really enjoyed reading her personal journey of growth too - the Tohru who we end up with by the last few chapters is so strong and mature. She’s still kind, but she’s ready to fight for what she wants now. I love her. I am ready to defend her when people try to drag her character down like no. you leave that girl alone ok. she went through hell and she’s lovely. She was a huuuuge inspiration for me growing up, since I really tried to be just like her. Maybe that was a bad thing since I tried to embody alot of the traits that in real life turn you into a bit of a pushover(?)
And I can’t mention Tohru without bringing up her angry cat boy. He really blooms as a character and grows up so much. He deserves to be as popular as he is. You can really see how much he’s had to overcome and how hard it’s been for him, and even though he’s so angry he’s also just so awkward and earnest.
But big shout out to Momiji for being adorable and making me cry like two times in the manga. His story is Tragic.
Oh and Hatori! Omg his story made me cry too. He deserves so much happiness with his teacher girlfriend (them getting together was so cute).
He c k most of the characters in Furuba are just So Good.
Fave Ships:
Again, nobody will be surprised by me revealing Tohru/Kyo to be my fave ship. They are the literal embodiment of the slow burn. So slowww, so painful, so beautiful. They just naturally fall in love and it gives me life. It’s so sincere and heartfelt. I want a love like that ;; the dramatic beats of their relationship really hit me hard - I was rooting for them so much! Whenever they had a cute moment I would genuinely feel like I needed to put the book down and screech. My heart couldn’t take it.
Oddly though, as much as I love the show and the characters, that’s really the only ship I love. Rin and Haru were cute I guess? And I liked Kisa and Hiro but only because they were like a mini Tohru and Kyo so I almost feel like they don’t count or something? Just,, can I say all the zodiac members and happiness? That’s one of the best ships too ;;;
Least favourite characters:
Hmmm, bit controversial but I really didn’t like Machi? She was so boring. I just never got invested in her enough to care about her, but I could feel like the story was trying its hardest and I would feel bad for kind of switching off during the school council chapters. Actually, I didn’t like any of the school council members;;;;
I know it’s kind of cliche to say Akito, but yeah… What she did to the members of the zodiac not only physically but mentally was just,, bad. What she did to little Yuki especially was heartbreaking. I’m not going to list all of the terrible things she did cause there was A Lot but I definitely consider some of the worst things were the times she tried to murder people. Or like, nearly murdered them. I know she was just a product of her upbringing (also her mom is Evil) but… eh, I just can’t like her. Even when she was ‘redeemed’ at the end. (Was she redeemed? does accepting she messed up and is sorry really a good enough redemption for what she did ?)
Also Kagura also seemed super selfish to me?? But maybe that was just the Kyoru shipper in me not liking her. I’m big enough to admit that lmao
Least favourite ships:
Since Akito was one of my least favourite characters, you’d think that one of my least favourite ships would be her and Shigure right? But I fully think they deserve each other. Take from that what you will.
I disliked the hint of Hana and Kazuma that was at the end? Age gaps that big are ehhhh
Since I didn’t care much for Machi I wasn’t very invested in her relationship with Yuki ;;;
Wow this post got long ahahaha a
thanks so much for asking Nonnie !~

Thoughts on Fruits Basket 2019 Episode 20: “I Can’t Believe You Picked It Up”
Oh boy, time for the introduction of everyone’s favourite sheepy boi who we all love to hate :)
Thoughts under the cut [and some big spoilers from later in the manga]
And so the chain of back to back zodiac member introductions continues with us getting Hiro’s episode, covering chapters 37 and 38 of the manga.
I was initially confused about why they decided to space Kisa and Hiro’s episodes apart by putting Ritsu’s episode in the middle, but considering how most of this episode is about showing off how Tohru’s kindness and endless selflessness is genuinely a character flaw at times that the show is aware of and willing to examine, it actually makes sense to put it right after the episode where she came across in the most unironically perfect way yet. So I think it works out for the best.
Just like last week, the fact that this episode is also adapting content from like ten chapters ahead of where we were beforehand means that some scenes had to be cut or altered a fair bit to avoid referencing events that haven’t happened yet in this adaptation. Last week there was stuff removed about Yuki and Haru that was related to a chapter we haven’t gotten to yet and a whole major character who hasn’t been introduced yet, and this week there was at least one scene removed that was about following up on the aftermath of the whole Kyo arc, which will be where this season ends at this point. They also changed the setting of the confrontation scene with Hiro early in the episode because in the manga it happened at Kazuma’s dojo, and Kazuma also isn’t properly introduced until the Kyo arc. There was also a scene from the start of the arc that got cut because it was about summer starting, which was setting up for the Uo arc, which in the manga happened immediately after this part.
I’m kinda curious to see if they find a way to put the little scene of Kyo being worried that he might have scarred Tohru into some other part of the story. I think it’s a cute scene that’s worth keeping, even if it obviously had to be cut.
And even though it wasn’t really related to anything plot-important, they did cut out a small bit with Hiro annoying some random high-schoolers, which was a bit of a shame since I related so hard to them and their urge to send him flying, lmao.
Other than that this episode was pretty much just a regular adaptation of this part of the manga, and very similar to how I remember the 2001 anime handling it, especially since they also had to remove the references to the Kyo arc because of how they placed this part. Though I think the 2001 anime was actually more graphic in showing Akito actually hitting Kisa in that whole flashback, which neither the manga or this version did. For better or worse.
I’ve never really liked Hiro as a character, and his intro arc is definitely him at his worst, since he hasn’t had any time to really develop or become more interesting, so this episode was about as uninteresting to me as I expected. I didn’t dislike it, though. As an adaptation, it was perfectly fine, it’s just the story being covered here that I don’t like much.
I do feel kinda bad that in the 2001 anime this was literally the only time he ever showed up, and so he didn’t even have a chance to grow, and anyone who watched that version first wouldn’t have gotten much time to like him even if they wanted to. Thankfully this version will cover the whole story so we’ll actually get to see his development.
There’s something kinda funny about how anime only fans react to these sorts of episodes that really show off how awful Akito is. I mean, it’s funny because the fact that they hate her is exactly what they should be feeling, and even knowing how the story goes, it’s still the most valid reaction to stuff like this, lol. Mostly I just get a kick out of seeing people be like “why the fuck hasn’t anyone just called the police or abandoned Akito and moved on with their lives?”, and I’m just like “oh boy, are y’all ready for some complex examination of distressingly realistic cult psychology in your cute shoujo anime? :V”. I hope nobody actually thinks that the fact that nobody tries to stop Akito is an actual writing flaw, because it’s something that is 100% intentional and actually central to the whole plot. It’s just that it won’t really be fully explained for ages, and you can’t really say anything about it without giving away massive spoilers.
It’s also worth saying that the whole revelation here that Kisa getting abused by Akito and hospitalized for several weeks happened immediately before the bullying started sure does put a whole new spin on Kisa’s backstory in a way that’s just sorta casually laid out on the table. It at least makes it immediately clear that there was actually a whole lot more going on that made the whole situation even more messed up, and we only knew about one part of it. I still wonder how much Kisa’s mother knew about what happened, considering how negative she acted toward her before. You’d think that she’d have more sympathy for her daughter if she knew that, on top of the bullying at school, she had also just been violently abused out of nowhere by Akito.
I think that’s about all I want to say about this episode. Not a lot really happens in this part in general, lol. I did appreciate seeing some screen-time from Kyo, though, since he’s been kinda sidelined recently, and given that in a few weeks we’re gonna get into his big arc, he needs all the screen-time he can get.
As I figured from what we saw of Caitlin Glass’ notes [and just from knowing what happens next in the manga], the next episode will adapt the chapter with the Yuki fan club visiting Hana’s house. I initially thought they might combine that with Hana’s backstory chapter, since the chapter with the fan club girls is kinda short and comedy-focused, but it does look like they’ll cover that chapter alone next week, and then Hana’s backstory chapter will be episode 22. I think that’ll at least work fine since her backstory chapter is a nearly double-length one that has a whole lot of dialogue and internal monologues and stuff, so it could easily take a whole episode to adapt. I’m less sure how they’ll approach adapting the other chapter into an entire episode, though.
It’ll be interesting to compare it to the 2001 anime, which also adapted the chapter with the fan club girls into an entire episode. It’ll be an especially interesting comparison because that episode of the 2001 anime was very, uh, eccentric, and filled with the director’s own creative vision, to say the least. Which is actually why it ended up being my favourite episode of the 2001 anime, funnily enough. But I’ll talk about that more next week.
Once we get past the Hana episodes, there’s nothing concrete to go on to try and guess what they’ll cover next, but with only three episodes left in the season after that, I think it’ll all be focused on Kyo.

Thoughts on the age gap between Shigure and Akito? Is it problematic? What do you think of the fandom's opinion that he's a predator, do you think Akito's age had something to do with him being attracted to her/ Exactly how much older than her is he cause I felt that was never exactly clear. What about the two other age gap ships in the series, Arisa/Kureno and Tohru's parents? Is Natsuki Takaya problematic for featuring so many age gap couples in the manga or does she handle it tastefully?
Oh man, that’s a tough one and this is going to be a long answer
Honestly, I think the way these relationships are presented in canon shows that Takaya doesn’t have the same hang-ups about age gap couples than we western audiences have. I don’t know enough about japanese culture to say this with absolute certitude, but it’s entirely possible that those differences in views may be cultural. Take Kyoko and Katsuya, for example: in real life, such a relationship could easily be horrifying. Kyoko is fourteen or fifteen years old when she meets Katsuya (she’s in her last year of middle school), she’s a very troubled teen (to put it mildly), Katsuya is 22 years old, he’s a teacher at her school, she gets kicked out of her parents’ house and ends up pregnant very quickly into their marriage… we’re talking about a teen with important issues ending up with a man who has an emotional influence over her with little to no way of getting out of the relationship should things ever go wrong between them… yikes. Yet their relationship turns to be nothing short of fulfilling for the both of them and the Honda home is a very harmonious one. And Kyoko, apart from that period of (totally understandable) depression after her husband’s death, grows into an independent and well-adjusted woman, comfortable with her choices and able to help others the same way Katsuya helped her when she was at her most vulnerable.
I’m especially sensitive to these matters because as a teacher, I get to interact with teenagers ten years younger than I am on a daily basis and the thought of getting in a romantic relationship with any of them is… disturbing, to say the least. They are nowhere near the level of maturity it takes to be on equal footing with an adult. I like them, they are bright and lively, they make me laugh a lot, but there are oceans between us in terms of life experience. And that’s normal! That’s life!
Yet I was never disturbed by Takaya’s way of portraying these relationships. Maybe because she makes it so believable that they should be fully consensual, that both parties are very much aware of what they’re getting into? Anyway, the thought of a 15-years-old marrying a 22-years-old (especially one going through the issues Kyoko was facing) would have me very concerned in real life, but I can get into it in the context of the story.
Now, about Akito and Shigure’s relationship in particular… For starters, let’s establish exactly how far apart they are in age. Shigure is said to be 27 years old at the beginning of the manga (Tohru says so in volume 5 after Kisa refers to Hatori as “uncle Hatori” in front of her). We’re not told how old Akito is exactly but she’s said to be in her early twenties. Meaning there’s a 7-8 years gap between them. As adults, it’s not that bad, but they have known each other since Akito was a baby and it’s implied they started having sex when she was still a teenager: we know they were already sexually involved when Akito slept with Kureno, leading to the whole Ren fiasco and Shigure being thrown out of the main house. When the story begins, we don’t know how long it’s been since he started living alone, but we can assume it’s been a year at the very least. So there’s a strong chance Shigure and Akito may have started having sex when she was, what, 17, 18 years old? Even younger? While Shigure himself was 24 years old or so. Once again… yikes. I totally understand how people could find that aspect of their romance off-putting.
However, I’m going to have to disprove the notion that Shigure is a predator. I don’t think he is and I don’t think Takaya meant to portray him as one. I once read a post saying that he likely manipulated Akito into sex which I don’t think is true. Personal headcanon of mine is that it was Akito who went to him when she started to feel sexual desire for him, based on his line in chapter 101 when she kisses him as he’s about to leave and he tells her even though she denies being a woman, she’s always quick to use her femininity to her advantage. That makes me think she’s the one who did the seducing the first time they had sex, even though ofc Shigure must have been more than willing. He could have turned her down, of course, and some could point out (rightfully) that it was his responsibility to do so given that she was younger than him and clearly unstable. Still, I believe that decision was born out of mutual desire and love on both sides. I think Akito’s desire for Shigure grew naturally and not as the result of some machination on his part. There are many twisted aspects to their relationship, but to me it’s made clear throughout the series that they’re sincerely attracted to each other, that their sleeping together is not done purely out of spite, anger or other unhealthy reasons (even if those are real issues between them). They have sex because they love each other, simple as that (and they have a lot of sex in the series lmao, even if most of the time it’s not shown outright because their relationship was meant to be kept secret from the reader until volume 17).
Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion but I think a relationship as complex as this one has to be handled with some nuance. Portraying Shigure as this mustache-twirling villain and Akito as his helpless victim is not a very interesting outlook in my view, though with Shigure being the manipulative asshole he is, I understand how people might be wary towards him. But he’s not the one calling all the shots in the relationship, nor does he have the upper hand all the time. It’s Akito who decides to kick him out of the main estate ; it’s also her who asks him to come back, which he does. She also knows how to hurt him and get under his skin, as seen in the scenes where she clings to Hatori or Kureno in front of him because she knows that it will piss him off. Is it still unhealthy as fuck? Certainly. But it’s not one-sided, is what I’m saying.
I’ve often seen their relationship compared to Jacob and Renesmee’s in Twilight, the idea being that Shigure “imprinted” on Akito the same way Jacob did on Renesmee. While I understand where these people are coming from, I think it’s worth pointing out that Shigure was still a child himself when he had The Dream™, which makes it way less creepy than if he’d been in his late teens, as Jacob was in Twilight. Still, the fact remains that he went through puberty and had his sexual awakening years before Akito did, while remaining at her side all along. Once again, I won’t try to defend that aspect of their romance. It works for me (as in, I can find it believable that Akito fell for him on her own free will) but I understand how people would not be as easily convinced.
Anyway, to conclude this long-ass reply, one crucial moment at the end is Shigure realizing that all this time he could have been easier on Akito and letting her make the choice of taking up their relationship again. When they make up in volume 23, he outright tells her that he slept with Ren because he’s a shitty person who reacted to getting hurt in the most petty way possible… which isn’t something a predator would say imo. A predator doesn’t admit to being a terrible person unless they’re trying manipulate their victim into feeling sorry for them, which is not what Shigure was trying to do. Ultimately the choice to pick up the pieces of their relationship and move forwards is hers. And when she does decide to go back to him, she finds him waiting in the exact same place he declared his love to her when they were younger. Which works as a symbol of their journey toward one another: all this time, he’s the one who’s been waiting for her to come to him on her own terms, liberated from the weight of the curse and the pressure of being “God”.

🤝 (daiki and kisa in the past)
send in 🤝 + a friendship ( @lvelyglxy. )
texts the other memes at 3 am: i feel like they both stay up late texting dumb memes to each other. sleep is the cousin of death tbh
tries to convince the other to do an idea that definitely sounds questionable: daiki does this a little more than kisa and half the time she goes along with it, then the other half she’s gotta talk him out of it.
is the designated driver and who always gets wasted: maybe they snuck a drink or two before the age of 20, but neither got drunk before being of age. at least, around each other. since they got out of touch by the time they turned 20, neither had the chance to experience this from each other.
always has to host the impromptu sleepover: kisa’s mom would kill her if she let a boy sleep over, but i can see daiki sneaking over during a rough patch in his life when he needed a friend. kisa especially did this after her mom died and she wanted to escape her dad, so i have to say daiki was the host a lot of the time.
who’s netflix account gets mooched off of: daiki gets the password to all the good tv apps, especially since kisa has the money for it.
brings all the snacks and who supplies the movie: it’s a 50/50 exchange.
is usually the first one to say sorry after a fight: kisa is particularly good at this, because she hates bad blood between them.
is the ‘ mom friend ‘: kisa often ends up the mom friend among her friends, having better insight on the lives of other’s than her own.
calls the other at 12 am to wish the other a happy birthday without fail: i want to say that they’re both good at this and if someone doesn’t text the other then it’s like ‘wtf?? where were you at midnight i know you weren’t sleeping’ lmao
is the better wingman to the other: probably daiki, since if kisa had to set him up with someone she’d probably do it with a smile and laugh about it, but then go cry in the bathroom because she likes him lol
‘ the strong must protect the sweet ‘ , who’s the ‘ strong ‘ and who’s the ‘ sweet ‘: they both want to think the strong is them, so i’ll call it a mutual exchange
pulls the other up for karaoke to sing a duet together: kisa, without fail, even though she can’t sing for crap
