(throwing my 10 gallon hat in the ring) fgo is and will always be hurt by its status as a mobile game especially when the main draw of reading in it is made less accessible to many people (things like locking events and special interludes behind rpwalls or just flat out not using the feature they invented specifically to give people event access) but i feel like people get frustrated specifically because of the discrepancy in story quality throughout, and that ultimately comes from the fact that fgo has no single main writer.

fgo has its absolute highs and its eye-rolling lows and that fully comes from the fact that different people are writing different parts of the story (again born from its mobile game status) and that will ultimately leave the story feeling tonally dissonant. yes there are some overarching themes present within the story but people will always feel dissatisfied when reading fgo because the story quality and writing style jumps wildly between parts of the story. the same applies to its comedic side events as well, some of them can be ball bustingly hilarious and others can be a test of faith.

at the same time though I think it is unfair to say that there is no good that comes from fgo even with its messed up model: the variety of different writers makes it a total playground for them to play with wildly different stories and thematics that would never come from a series as dense as fate. nasu has writing chops but i dont think he could have made something like e pluberius unum or shinjuku without adding 2.5x the wordcount. there is no joke in carnival phantasm thats as good as real deal nobunaga or valentines exponential chocolate technology. while it certainly varies there are absolutely standout characters among the variety that are just as well written in fgo as they would be in a different, longer fate work. fgo is The game that introduced the concept of actually having a story and plot in mobile games. even with all the horribleness of Bill and Teds Epic Hentai Gambling Adventure people do still come back specifically for the story aspect of fgo more than any other aspect of it. its really better to think of fgo as a series of vignettes with an overarching theme because thats really what it is at the end of the day, a series of stories in a whole bunch of different settings with a main cast that has rotating characters. and again, fgo will always have inherent problems: the gacha model, marketing itself as a single story when its really not, the waifutization and pandering, continuing to bring certain subpar writers into the room, the actual gameplay aspect of fgo still having major issues, and so on. however i feel like people should already understand these things at this point, and people just consistently set themselves up for failure with rampant fandomization and not understanding the disconnect with fgo as a whole. maybe im just a little neurotic goblin but if youre going to play any type of mobile game, you should do your research first

fgo really is an exercise in taking the good with the bad and if the bad outweighs the good for you, then just read a different fate work or quit the series altogether, because fgo really is just a culmination of the various themes of other fate works, and even if you can certainly say it doesn't do some of it well it does keep people hooked. fgo is already 6-7 years into its lifespan so i think that everything that needs to be said about fgos problems have really already been fully said and discussed. unlike the accessibility of other vns in english fgo is easily accessible and thus all of its problems are a lot more transparent and more easily discussed (and at times even exaggerated i will say), so its not really a surprise when you think about it that many people get a bad impression of the rest of the fate series when only reading fgo and seeing its problems, since the other material is either unofficially translated or locked behind youtube playthroughs and beasts lair forum downloads. if you enjoy worldwide popular mobile game fate/grand order i promise you that you will enjoy other fate works and nasuverse just as much, likely more, and its worth it to seek them out. and if you just dont like fgo after the fact... i promise you that you'll still probably like the other vns of the series. fgo can only be really appreciated when you know the thematics its expanding on, and all of those come from the rest of the series. and look like. i can certainly understand the argument of fgo being bad as a story if fans are telling you to read a different story to then read fgo, like thats certainly an argument ill listen to. many fate works can stand on their own as stories and if fgo as a standalone story doesnt work for you and you dont want to read its extensive backlog of content just to understand fgo thats genuinely understandable. however, that in itself kind of fundamentally misunderstands the narrative that fgo is trying to make as a culmination of all the lore and thematics that its been building on for about two decades now, since again, fgo is ultimately a culmination of everything that came before it

also can i just say that now that we know what went down between jaewon and eunji, it makes her behaviour all the more understandable and all the more unforgiveable. bc she is compensating. she knows she did something bad and hurtful and the guilt of what she did makes her overcompensate in her behaviour with jaewon. she is both more flirty and pandering but also more demanding and needy and harsh, all to try and make up for what she did when the only way to start atoning for it is to be honest and admit it. instead, when jaewon breaks up with her, still thinking he doesnt know the truth of the matter, its almost like she gets offended. like he doesnt know what i did, and i keep telling him its not true, why would he do that? why doesnt he believe me, or trust me? yet she is the one that has already broken trust, she is the one lying. and its all the more reason for her to turn against jihyun, bc not only is jaewon moving on with someone else, not only does he represent what she lost, but he has this pure, innocent, honest air which is everything she’s not, and it makes her dislike him all the more bc she cannot avoid those things about herself. and it even makes jaewon returning to her more understandable, bc when he is self-sabotaging, when he does think the worst of himself, maybe he thinks this is all i deserve, a woman who cheats on me and lies to me and makes me feel like the bad guy, it all feeds in to him taking blame that doesnt belong to him. her whole thing is wanting to win, but this is not someone beating her, this is a loss she inflicted on herself and she cant deal with that. in a way, its like a twisted parallel of jaewon, the way their behaviour overcompensates for something they dont want to admit or accept, except jaewon needs to accept that he is blameless while eunji needs to accept blame. and i love that seeing this new light to her actions makes them no better, in fact it kind of makes them more horrid, but theyre horrid bc you understand where they’re coming from, and it makes it easier to see how she can go about becoming a better person. its like she’s humanised by us seeing the full extent of her wrongdoings, bc now she isnt some faceless evil, she’s a person who needs to learn how to treat people better and be willing to admit she isnt perfect. and i hope she does.

I'm new to F1 and have no idea why ppl hate Daniel and Max...what did both of them do?

secondly...this is a lot of lore to squeeze into one post. i think most of the max hate started with the 2021 championship controversy. if you've seen DTS, its goes into it all but that caused a really big divide in f1. max has been called out by the mongolian government for using slurs on the radio and he didnt really have the best reaction. his gf, kelly piquet, is the daughter for former f1 driver nelson piquet, who had some pretty nasty racist things to say about lewis (tho max did say it was wrong to say them...but also defended nelson's character :/). i'm sure theres more but that's all i have off the top of my head.

as for daniel, i was a huge daniel fan. i put time and money into that little elf. then he did an interview with barstool sports that was that start of my disillusionment. he's always been pretty douchey-frat-boy-y with edgelord humor and obvious pandering to his male fans (despite probably having more women fans but i digress). in the interview, daniel makes a joke about women driving. extremely original material, we've never heard that in the 31 years since a woman last raced in formula one. he has a long history of making jokes like that--quite literally too many examples to put into one post. most recently, he publicly supported chrsitina horner after he was accused of harassment and said he felt for him. it just felt like such a slap in the face considering how hard it is to just be a FAN that's a woman around motorsport. getting sexually harassed at races or at work and spammed online by meninist losers isn't enough, the drivers feel they need to start shitting on us too. so, i still have a lot of frustration towards him because men ages 13-65 love daniel and when he acts like that, it only emboldens them to do it too. and ten times worse because they dont have a public image or brand to protect.

but its f1, there's always a reason to hate everyone. seriously, name any driver and they have something that makes you look at them a lil different. it is the sport of war crimes, tax evaison and crusty old europeans assholes.

Some people think they are being feminist by writing Sakura and Hinata out of character.

Fanfic writers being straight aside, I feel like there is a fear of being called mysogynist if the female characters are portrayed in any bad light so even queer writers write them ooc and it makes Sasuke and Naruto appear like assholes. Saw some writers tagging their fic "not for sakura or hinata fans" as if they are about to write the worst thing about those girls and its just those characters acting like they would in this specific situation.

Recently I saw some Sakura/SS stans tweeting about how writing fanfics where SNS cheat is problematic and disrespectful. As if gay people who have no choice but getting married to people they arent attracted to have any choice. Thats a real thing that happen irl and that doesnt make gay ppl assholes, just victims of society.

I have observed fandoms for a while and it feels like people use feminism as an excuse to dogpile on mlm shippers. They rarely (or never) call out mlf shippers who exhibit hatred for female characters they dont like.

Ever since I joined this fandom, I have felt whacked left and right by seeing what people understand by feminism and the way they regard homosexuality. It's like 20th century never happened. Like fandom was the last space I thought to be this backward, outdated and unwilling to learn.

The moment you write Sakura and Hinata as nice, empathetic characters, you are denigrating Naruto and Sasuke's characters and trivializing what they had to suffer through. Their world is a reflection of the real world, don't forget. If you write those two women as good, it's pretty clear you don't truly respect what queer communities have to go through in a conservative society, ie, if you consider yourself a person who puts your hand where your mouth is. this is gonna be a part 1 to a longer post - but like a lot of the minecraft community (at least the vocal Gamers on the Internet) are... very. extrinsically motivated. and they demand a lot from the game. I think they remember when they were young and felt the game had so much to do, when they were making the experiences themselves with their own creativity and now they expect everything to have a deep meaningful use. Frankly, I don't think things in minecraft need to be useful - I think most of the people on here can likely resonate with that. A mob simply being cute and not having practical use cases is nice. a new material thats mainly for decoration is nice See, I think. Mojang trying to pander to extrinsically motivated players who need a clear use... just leads to kinda awkward like. people get the wrong message. they get the message that mojang wants to make something with lots of uses and are failing at making it useful, when mojang just wants to add something thats... well, fun! and gives it a practical use where it makes sense (yes, copper is a great example) Of course, things can be given use over time, but I don't think pressure should be put on everything to be useful. Its the same conversation we have as a fandom about why giving Din a love interest is pandering and harmful to the shows focus and tone.

In the orignal game (i didnt play the remaster) it was basically up to player interpretation as to what you thought Joel and Tess's past was to the other beacuse it didnt matter. Tess's fate doesn't have less impact if she and Joel were never a thing. Thats the point. No matter who you are to Joel he sees loss in all of them.

I get people like Tess, but I like Tess as her own thing beacuse her not being a love interest is more powerful for a death. Beacuse it shows you that Joel keeps losing more then just what he did at the beginning. He loses everyone everywhere and its why getting attached to Ellie is extra terrifying.

Its not just the fear of past trauma its the looming fear of 'this happens to everyone i know'.

I also never read romance in that past. Both of them, especially Joel are incredibly jaded and disconnected. Theyre friends and companions but I dont think romance was something Joel truly explored or felt for most of the time skip. Hes not a man who in that kind of pain would find romance comforting.

Shippers can be happy thats fine, but looking at it critcally from a narrative and thematic structure. Love interest Tess is a bad move and pandering.

Its why Joel romance is in fanfiction. We can create that harmony where love is possible again for Joel because we arent following a rigid demanding plotred story. Were fantasizing about the soft and the good.

The main story for The Last of Us has zero room for Joel romance. Its the wrong place for it, and I hope it was a case of actress foot in mouth syndrome trying to push her own interpretation of a character dynamic.

Please dont feel obligated to respond LMAO im just passionate about this— i am SO happy you pointed out Sam losing his personality i thought i was insane. Hes just,, mild david now? Every video of his that has come out since… i dont know, maybe his hbw? Ive noticed this. I think the intention was for sam and david to develop and be more soft with their listeners as time when on, which… did happen, but now theyre like… the same guy to me. Maybe thats just me. No need to apologize for the rant. Sam was also one of my favorite characters only to become my least favorite after the reduction of his personality to “old cowboy” and a hyper-devotion to his YA protagonist partner. I haven’t actually listened to any of Sam’s audios in a while so I don’t know the depths of terrible they reach now. I didn’t listen to the BA preview either but I do remember it was one of the few things the fandom got rightfully riled up about. Sam was undoubtedly one of the characters Redacted started writing to completely pander to the fandom majority, and since the fandom majority is mentally 14, we can only expect horrible writing.

Maybe "trope" wasn't accurate.

And it's not like I'm not guilty of these behaviors in my own writing or just imagining how a story could unfold differently.

But one things I think is fanfic-y in a bad way: overdoing it on worldbuilding.

I love worldbuilding. I love creating these back stories behind how cities were put together, the history of a place or a person, or how whatever you add to a story that is in that story but not in our world (superpowers, new technologies) altered how those places developed and how that history unfolded.

Then there is worldbuilding that drags a story to a halt--because it's no longer about the plot or the characters.

I could point to the various iterations of the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comics--and I don't just mean the pre-Ian Flynn stuff, because I think Flynn is guilty, but in a different way, of forcing so much worldbuilding and pre-plotting for future stories instead of just giving us those future stories. It's not like One Piece where you still get a good story--even as it is setting up three to four more stories in the future.

But the more recent problem with worldbuilding has been My Hero Academia.

It's not as if every time the franchise has tried to worldbuild that it has been bad. A good example of worldbuilding is the spinoff series, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, which slowed down the plot to naturally come off of a string of recent stories all about giant villains, before naturally easing into some worldbuilding details that shows the aftermath of those fights, and how those giant people now are trying to make lives for themselves--but, due to their large size, lack the infrastructure they need to survive. Any housing that can accommodate them is not conveniently located: it's a NIMBY, something the neighbors don't want near them, so giant people are kept to the outskirts of town, in industrialized areas, without access to most public transportation, groceries, and other amenities that are vital to living. And the problems these giants face lead to new problems that then lead to new stories that impact where the plot of the entire series goes next. It's not a tangent into an unrelated story: it is still building on the main story itself. That is great worldbuilding.

Then My Hero Academia, in its latest arc, takes so much about being giant, or animalistic, or a mutant or heteromorph, and throws in so much back story and new history all at once. I'm not saying any of the information provided necessarily conflicts with pre-established canon; if anything, MHA is finally building on stuff already tackled in Vigilantes. And it's not as if the back stories to Shoji and Koda come out of nowhere and are not a natural fit: they do get revealed in a natural enough manner that I enjoy the revelations. But stopping the story in its tracks to toss in some random details is inartful.

It's like when Star Wars or Star Trek mention something that was just a placeholder (so that the character doesn't say "that place," "that person," "that event" but actually names a proper noun)--only to shoot themselves in the foot because now the fans want an entire encyclopedic entry about what Jedha is, what the Clone Wars were, who Boba Fett was.

Sometimes a really skilled writer takes that name and conjures up a really good story that, on its own, works--and that should be the standard: if you didn't need to see any other Wars or Trek, does this new story work? Or is it just to answer a question no one ever asked? It's how you overburden a film like Solo with so many mythology gags that it comes off as pandering.

Heck, Greg Weisman (inadvertently?) even did a gag around this when having a future iteration of Brooklyn in Gargoyles have to hastily explain away some detail by saying "Clone Wars," with little intention on explaining what that was. It was a joke--you quickly make up a fake name, then move on. It was a meta joke about how much of the lore in these series really comes down to, "A creator just needed a name for a thing to keep the story moving, gave the thing a name, and moved on, not interested in developing the thing further."

Not that Weisman hasn't gotten my rancour up with some fanfic-y things, too. I love Spectacular Spider-man--but sometimes the coincidences of who knows who and how one thing leads to another thing are too convenient. Yes, this is fiction, you are making an artifice to make the plot progress and the characters progress--but it stands out as too coincidental. I'm guilty of this in my writing, too: sometimes you want the story to be neater and let one thing lead to another, even if that's not how it was in the original. Weisman did that with Spider-man: he took disparate details in the comics, that Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, and others didn't intend to ever connect up, and he made them connect up--to the point that it felt force rather than, forgive how repetitive and unspecific this word is, natural.

(That lack of a natural fit is also why the connection between Fire Force and Soul Eater still remains so fanfic-y to me: there is so much of the one that doesn't match the other, in terms of history, tone, geopolitical divisions, or pre-established canon. I know, "canon is secondary to plot"--but when the new story you tell not only defies canon, but defies logic, its own message, the message of the other story you are linking it to, and does disservice to your characters, then congratulations, now it's not only forced and fanfic-y, it just sucks.)

And that convenience problem persists with another thing Greg Weisman worked on, Young Justice--as does another fanfic-y thing that can get bothersome: the need to pair up everyone. And don't say, "They're teenagers, of course they hook up!" Aromantic, asexual, or just "not the right time": not every teen hooks up, not every person is interested in finding someone or will find someone.

I imagine some of this is due to changes in demographics and network: Cartoon Network evidently was not fine with a same sex relationship, but once you have an older audience and are now a primarily streaming series, you can have Kaldur be bi/pansexual. And it's not like there aren't stories in the original comics of the characters dating...which is why it is so bizarre the choices made. It seems less like adapting a work and more like making your own fanfiction: "What if Superboy and Miss Martian were instead an item?" It was allowing the plot to do more of the work--as if Weisman really wanted that pairing to happen to perpetuate a lot of the plot--but I would be lying if I didn't say it fit those two characters, too, or at least this version of those two characters--two characters who don't feel like they are a complete person of any species or racialized identity, who don't feel like they fit in, but who accept the other for who they really are, however they look or whatever their origin.

Then again, for how much I decry fanfic-y stuff, there are places where I like the too-convenient, too-clean linking up of everything. For example, Ninja Turtles 2003 did a pretty good job of linking up everything--because it lent more weight to what unfolded, and metatextually was a brilliant way to get around censorship. You want to behead the Shredder but you know 4Kids won't let you? Then you make things way too convenient so that you can get away with Shredder being beheaded without killing him. You want the turtles' origin to tie into the Shredder's, even though that's not how it worked in the comics? You go ahead and connect it, have three out of your four turtles literally laugh at that idea--then have the fourth one point out how that is not only fated but means that their existence is owed to a horrible person who killed so many just for these four to exist as they are now--and suddenly that moment of laughing at how bad the writing was turns into a moment of realizing how such a connection can pose an existential crisis. That is excellent writing: you do the cheat, acknowledge it's a cheat--then take it completely seriously so that you show the audience why you did this cheat for the sake of making that audience feel something.

In other words, something is fanfic-y when the artifice seems obvious--when it seems obvious how the author was doing all of this to get the plot to unfold exactly how they wanted it to, even if it makes no sense--while the best parts of fan fiction, and hence of fiction writing overall, is when the details don't come across as something the author did but just something in the story that naturally unfolded as it should.

Do you think that Narumitsu is queerbaiting?

This is kind of a difficult question to answer because I think whether or not something is queerbait depends really heavily on the intent of the writers. A lot of the big picture stuff about narumitsu was a result of kumiko suekanes feedback/suggestions (I believe it was her idea to both make edgeworth phoenixs age as he was originally much older, and for them to have some sort of pre existing connection, because she thought they needed to be peers with history for people to get properly invested in their story. Which I agree with!) Suekane drew yaoi doujinshi so I don't think it's impossible or even unlikely that she was intentionally playing into more romantic character tension there. but she's not a writer ever! Shu Takumi is responsible for all of the trilogy writing and I dont think he was ever even a little bit trying to play into the desires of narumitsu shippers.

If memory serves I think he was like, at least aware that some people saw phoenix and edgeworth romantically but I don't think that in any way influenced the way he wrote his characters. It just does not strike me as the man's style, from everything I've read. Hes not immune to fan feedback (I believe some pretty big stuff in dgs2 was a result of fan reception of dgs1) but I have just really never gotten the impression from anything that takumi is interested in pandering to his audience.

I think he's like hirohiko araki where he just keeps writing these insanely charged feeling relationships between men without the question of whether or not they're kinda gay literally ever crossing his mind. Ace attorney as a franchise is also very devoid of any current romantic relationships for members of its main cast. The series is so unconcerned with romance as something in most of these characters lives that I think it'd be hard to make them date each other in a way that didn't feel strange even if you were going to make them gay.

However, past the trilogy, I think you'd be safe to call it queerbaiting. There's literally no reason for edgeworth to keep showing up like he does other than to roll into town, have some pandery conversations with phoenix, and then let the plot keep chugging along. Capcom knows that that character dynamic is a huge part of what has kept their franchise relevant for the past 20 years. Shu takumi was adamant that phoenixs story was done after tnt- he only put him in aa4 because he was made to. Aai2 cleanly tied up edgworths arc. There's nothing left to do with these characters other than parade them around to be like "hey, remember these guys? Now they're calling each other daddy in court" or whatever. And to me that's bait.

But make no mistake I am taking this bait. Phoenix calling edgeworth daddy in court lives on in my heart as a triumph. Queerbait really isn't the end of the world to me, and I think the critical thing with recognizing queerbait isn't to try and blacklist franchises for this crime, but rather to make you aware of what expectations you should have going in. Knowing when something is queerbait vs queer coding vs textually queer vs none of those things but you could do a meaningful queer reading of it if you wanted to is REALLY important. There aren't hard lines between these concepts but a lot of fan spaces fail to meaningfully distinguish between them at all and you end up with a lot of bizarre and incoherent critical analysis as a result.
