hi atticus! a hypothetical for you: i have a fantasy world with a species of snake people (or sneople, to quote a very old meme). do you know of any interesting body language from real snakes they might use? are there ways real snakes don't typically emote that you think they might if they were sapient? how do you think a snerson might do things like bow, show confusion, express happiness, or show affection to a friend?

Ooh, what an excellent question.

- Fear: freezing up. Almost every real snake will freeze when they feel threatened, and I see no reason why sneople also wouldn't.

- Tails could also be used to show emotions. Many snakes will rattle or wag their tails when they feel stressed or frightened, whether they have a rattle or not.

- Thinking about bows - lowering the head in snakes is often a sign of fear, so maybe a better sign of respect for sneople would actually be stretching out the neck or raising the chin? Like a way to say - I trust you enough to show off my neck to you.

- Confusion in snakes is often shown by rapid, enthusiastic movements. Sneople might become fidgety when confused. (I'm thinking now about them using toys like Rubik's cubes to help calm nervous energy)

- A lot of snakes seem to really enjoy soft things. I have a few snakes who love soft material so much I keep soft fleece hammocks meant for ferrets and birds in their enclosures. This makes me think that sneople would be very tactile. I'm imagining lots of soft clothes, and tactile ways of showing affection like hand-holding.

- Real snakes aren't a super affectionate bunch, but content snakes like to rest their heads on their own coils. I like to imagine a snerson resting their head on another snerson's shoulder (or whatever they got) as a sign of affection and comfort.

- I totally think sapient sneople would lounge around on each other all the time. Like I said, snakes are tactile, and feeling safe while being held is a huge sign of trust in pet snakes that I can see extending to relationships with other sneople.

- A common sign of annoyance in snakes that I find very endearing is huffing. Just a big ol sigh. Very expressive, and I can totally imagine sneople doing it, too.

- I imagine their society would value stoicism. Snakes like to keep themselves to themselves and don't easily show pain until it's very bad. (This also has a lot of wonderful Dramatic Potential.)

Those are my thoughts - but I'd love to hear what everyone else thinks, too! This is a great and really thought-provoking question.

I feel like you'd be amused by what happened when I gave Arcade the Matter Modulator in my latest file, which is that he runs ahead of EVERYONE (unlimited companion mod) to initiate combat, all the time. Boone can't draw a bead before my fave nerd is running forward yelling "HERE WE GO" at the Deathclaws.

lmao i love that i play melee/unarmed, and he is constantly shooting enemies before i can even get into range :P reckon he figures he won't have to bandage any of his friends up anymore if he just beats em to the punch

"Merce" short for Mercurius is a Roman god brought back to life by the legion (caesar brought him up to justify leaving alone traders and couriers). He came back pretty weak, around mortal levels (A bit more than mortal, benny's headshot would have been fatal otherwise). Mischievous and chaotic he likes tricking people to accomplish his goals, but those are usually to help people. The world is a far cry from what he remembers but he believes the old ways are not how things should be run anymore, something he clashes with his other returned siblings, ceres, juno and mars. He shares the dream of a free Vegas with Arcade, a dream that turned to friendship and a friendship that eventually turned to a relationship. The courier six being known for crazy things is useful for him since it allows him to exist without the legion and he has since gained several perk abilities, the ability to sense where he is on a road and to a degree what is on it and who passed it and the ability to jump real good and maybe hover a little just by becoming famous. An unstoppable courier could easily be an aspect to the messenger of the gods that no one remembers in this age so besides mars, who is the strongest for obvious reasons, he kind of lucked out with his post war "believers". He triumphed ultimately over his siblings, ending up on sort of good terms (she understood his reasons even if she thought her way was better) with Ceres (ncr) and bad terms with Juno (house) and Mars (legion). Afterwards he helps manage trade and infrastructure (mostly roads) for the free Vegas.

His time before his relationship in arcade resulted in a daughter which he took in after her mother died. Aurelia, the demigodess of gold and medicine (focus on radiology), grew up in vegas until she ran away to boneyard as a teenager to study with the followers like her (other) father did. Her parents forbid her from going there since the ncr still kind of hates them for Hoover dam. She can cover her skin in gold for a short time to give herself radiation resistance and to give her punches more weight and she can assist natural healing a little but she avoids using those so she is not noticed. She is a bit more long living and durable than most humans and she will never be able to reach the upper limits of her fathers power (before her death) but she is able to survive without any belief or fame and her powers depend mostly on people believing in her father. Weather she becomes a goddess after her death does depend on her fame/belief in her/if she became a legend.

Her best friend at university (making her not technically a fnv oc anymore) is Esther Shade, a ghoul in the same radiology course as her. They became fast friends and later lived in the same dorm. She is not that old for a ghoul but has passed two lifetimes already before deciding to study medicine. Longsuffering student with a coffee addiction. She likes to collect colorful plastic wigs to wear (her current one is bright blue)

Mars knows most of Caesars claims are bullshit (he IS mars, he knows ceasar is not his son) but he likes the legion and it benefits him. Ceres wishes to use the NCR's resources and labs to find a way to restore the wastelands glassed nature. Juno believes in the old civilization and wishes to bring it back with house, she was very pissed when Mercurius killed him. Shes a bit of a femme fatale in this postapocalyptic age

Someday I will make normal fnv ocs but not yet apparently. Then again 50% of my fo4 characters are eldritch horrors. Maybe I can put all the weird magic op ocs in one continuity since that list currently only has 1 Sole survivor and one Courier.

Oh wait I still have 2 that could count as fnv characters even if they technically originated in my fallout shelter game:

Katherine gecko, the daughter of Benny who is on the way to find the mailman who killed her father, and "Bearkiller" Martha, a vaultdweller grandma who spent most of her life hunting mutated creatures, mostly Yao guai (which is how she got her nickname). After confessing her story at Martha's Diner Kathy got an offer for Martha to help her on her quest. Her granddaughters can manage the diner just fine, retirement got a bit boring and Martha is not a woman to die lying down
