I've also been posting Competing Needs (pancakes comic) to tapas and webtoons, both of which require a 'book cover' to be uploaded. So I made one! I'm hoping to do 3-4 more short comics over the next few months and have them printed all together as a collection, for personal use. (I MIGHT make the print version available for purchase though if there's interest!)

Hi my dear anons and moots! I've been dead for like maybe a week now? but yes like what my last pole suggested I have been dying countless times trying to plan out the first draft of the K birthday fic and now I am writing the final draft.

There is 20 parts to it that i've divide on the first draft but obviously you won't be able to tell since i'll be adding several small sub-titles in between random paragraphs (that have nothing to do with the divided parts pattern btw)

The fic has a lot to do with the dark moon webtoon (anddd nothing will probably come off accurate from the original webtoon cuz i don't even read it ToT so just take note of that) Everyone is mentioned in their irl names rather than character names. Yes there will be mentions of Sooha, Enhypen and &Team.

The fic mostly focus on the rollercoaster storyline (i wouldn't call it that bc my storyline is like tornado rn and me trying to put it in words is also very tornado-style and lets not talk about how the story is very anti-climatic )#greatadvertising - soooo there won't be too much smut involved. Just like one smut scene.

I tried my best to make the reader role interesting but also not-pick me at the same time. (Hopefully it does not come off as a pick-me cuz I would fall to my death if it did)

Reader isn't human btw. She's not some human with a supernatural power (AHEM- SOOHA) i don't want her to be so overpowered and special. Maybe y'all can take a guess what her identity is? (vampires, werewolves and humans - She's none of the mentioned ones)

As for my uploading schedule, originally I was planning to release a chapter every 2 weeks, but I had to give up since it's an impractical goal to have. I work up to 10-14 hours a day and after such a long time spent staring at a screen while drawing, I really have little energy and time for my personal projects, which means uploads are getting slowed down too.

So at the moment, I aim at releasing a chapter each month. It's not much but that's all I can do sadly ;-;

Maybe if one day I get revenue from Webtoon, I might be able to post more frequently... that'd be amazing actually

Also, how do u do the formatting and pacing n stuff?? How do u decide where goes what??

HI!! Okay I have plenty of answers for you :)

1) the most important thing I think I can say when starting a webcomic is there is never a right time, or a time when you can be perfectly prepared for the whole thing. Before NSS I had started two separate webcomics that didn’t do very well! I enjoyed working on them, but they were kinda prototype NSS lol— eventually I got curious randomly about taking an extra language class at my school, and I ended up taking an ASL class. That was kinda the missing puzzle piece for me, and I realized there was a lot I could fit into a story based on what I was learning and what I was experiencing and struggling with in high school. Lewis has a lot of traits from my own struggles with anxiety, and because of that we’re gonna (very likely) have to put warnings on the episodes featuring his anxiousness and panicking. BUT to answer your question I guess in a more concise way, I had been wanting to make a webcomic anyway, but I ended up truly starting it because I was having a perfect storm of life experiences at the time that I want to create in a fictional story :)

2) okay so the formatting is always kinda crazy. For starting off on Webtoon canvas, I used this https://www.webtoons.com/en/canvas/webtoon-format/list?title_no=109936

It has the dimensions listed for everything you’ll need in the general uploading for it!

In terms of organizing the panels, Im definitely pretty amateur at this part LOL— it’s just a learning experience, but the biggest thing to know is that to keep a flow with the comic (since it’s vertical/the audience will be scrolling) it’s better to space out your panels and transitions. So (for example) having a busy comic page like a DC comic issue WOULD be doable for a Webtoon, but itd be a confusing read because of how busy the pages are.

3) So one thing I will say is (about any experiences and characters in the comic), is I try to avoid putting anything in that I haven’t had either experience with, a class in, or an interaction with. Writing a deaf character is not easy, and because of the nature of NSS being a comic (and ultimately a story), there will be parts of Fern that will be inaccurate. (Partially because they’re still images and not animated or live action). AS WELL AS!! Everyone’s story is different. There isn’t one identical experience with (for example), language— bilingualism, trilingualism, being hard of hearing, being deaf, etc!

I can share that over the years that I’ve been making NSS I’ve interviewed people, asked about as many experiences as possible, and gotten many eyes looking over and critiquing his character. So I think the biggest thing is if you’re writing a character with an experience outside of your own, go out and literally meet people and do as much research as possible.

whenever he sees you hard at work at drawing, he has to resist the urge to run over and throw his arms around you because you look so cute with your concentrated face

I'm looking to publish a comic of my own soon, I'm just trying to figure out which platforms I'm going to use. So I was wondering how your experience with tapas has been, or if you have any sites you'd recommend! Thanks for your time!!!

I’ve been on a few sites in my day. Personally, from all my experience, all I can give you are the pros and cons and you’d have to figure out your own preferences for yourself

Pros for Tapas are, imo, easier to accumulate a steady growing reader base. Webtoons allows this for you too, but I think Webtoons primarily focuses on promoting their bigger comics and the smaller ones go by the wayside a lot. Tapas promos even beginner comics, and does the “Personal Snack” section, which recommends comics for people every Sunday I believe, with a variety of comics, not just the big hitters. Tapas also offers a nice tipping feature, which is a nice way to see readers support you as well as gives you motivation to put out content for them. It’s easier to keep in contact with the readerbase.

Where Webtoons supersedes Tapas is that they have more mmm IDK the exact word, but street cred? In the webcomic world. If you’re successful on Webtoons, you know you’ve made it in the world of webcomics. Not too many sites can do that. The only problem is it’s hard to get recognized there unless you’re a big named thing. Webtoons other pro is that the readerbase is more interactive. For example, just from my personal experience, I’d post an update of SaM on both Tapas and Webtoons at the same time. In the first 30minutes of updating, I might get 10-15 comments on Tapas, but 30-60 on Webtoons. The readers are very interactive on Webtoons.

Cons of Webtoons? They only use the JPEG format, which really lowers the quality of the pictures. It’s hard to get noticed there.

Cons of Tapas? The upload function is really difficult sometimes. It takes forever to upload and sometimes it freezes and you can’t upload for a day or so.

I personally don’t use other sites like Smackjeeves anymore because it’s not a lot of exposure and I don’t care for the formatting. There are other sites out there but I also haven’t tried them. I primarily use Tapas and Webtoons. Oh, and btw, don’t worry about keeping the rights to your comics on Tapas and Webtoons. You keep full rights to them and the ideas.

Both sites have pros and cons like all do. It’ll just be what your preference is. When in doubt, though, just put it on multiple platforms? Amplify your exposure, dude

How did you pick the colors for text boxes in Always Human? It seemed to be somewhat linked to the hair color of the character speaking? And what font was that? It isn't quite Comic Sans, but it's similar (and better) looking. (your art+music is amazing btw!)

Hello! This is going to be a giant ‘reply to asks’ posts, sorry for how long I”ve been keeping you all waiting.

Yep, it was roughly the hair colour of the character speaking, but lighter and shifted a bit to fit in with the colour schemes of the scene. I mostly just winged it? The font is Komika, which has a lot of variations and is a very handy lettering font.And thank you very, very much

I don’t have a tutorial, but I’d suggest playing around and having fun! Find out which brushes you like best, then go into the brush settings and play around with the settings too, until you’ve found a way to make the brushes work exactly the way you want them to. I think tutorials are never quite as useful as messing around and seeing what happens :)

I’ve had a lot of people ask about my art process, so I’ll put together something for how I work on Aerial Magic panels (and maybe upload it as part of the Q&A episode that will happen I promise XD)

Actually, during Always Human I was also in the UK :)I’m Australian, but my then-boyfriend-now-husband (who is also Australian) decided to study over here, so we moved. He moved first and got everything settled, so I didn’t have to do much organising beyond my visa, which was a relief. When I came over I was working as a substitute/casual primary school teacher, and I signed up with some teaching agencies before I travelled over, and they gave me e an idea of what to expect and what work would be like. Having them helping with bank accounts etc. definitely made everything much less stressful :)

Overall living in another country has been a great experience, I’ve learned a lot and I’ve had fantastic experiences. I’m glad I did it (though I’m also looking forward to when the two of us move back home - some time next year we think.)

If you get the chance to work overseas, I definitely recommend it!

Aaaaand my husband and I met at a mutual friend’s birthday party. He was funny and kind and he talked to me about books, and then he made an excuse to get my phone number by offering to lend me a book which is 100% the way to my heart :)

mmmmmm Kristin Cashore and Umino Chika are probably my biggest inspirations writing wise. Always Human was very shoujo manga inspired, Aerial Magic is very iyashikei inspired.I’m not sure I can point to any one particular influence on my art - obviously I’m very very anime/manga inspired, I’ve been inspired by other webcomics, I’ve been inspired by anime-esque Western shows, I’ve been inspired by Disney etc.(Mostly though I’m anime/manga inspired, I love the big eyes, small nose, small chin aesthetic it’s so pretty!!! Though not very good for facial diversity.)I’m afraid I have no thoughts on Jack Kirby, sorry. I never got into US comics (partially because I don’t particularly enjoy the aesthetics of the art style, partially because I prefer the more cinematic paneling of manga.)I love sports anime/manga a lot, and I’d be keen one day to do a story about a girl’s sports team :DBy the way, please let me recommend to you the webcomic Champs and the visual novel Butterfly Soup :)

BTW if somebody has experience with Smackjeeves, Webtoons and/or Tapas, please let me know. Especially regarding fan comics. I’d appreciate a few short reports. Thank you! If you wanna forward me to other uploading platforms for comics, that’d be fine with me, too). Maaaaaaaaybe the Aniara AU, too, depending on where it goes. -the comic thing with the laser violins. I liked this ask really much so i made some of my staff answering this:Nucha: I’m against pirated raws of any kind, the least we can do is buy our own copy.Yukio: If we're talking about pirated raws, I obviously wouldn't recommend using it. If there is an official site, it's only natural that we buy it. I won't say I'm a saint, the only time I would probably say yes to pirated raws is if there is no other official site hosting the manga.Egg:  it depends on the manga eg. If its DJ or out of publication  I’d think not buying the free raws is more permissable. I think the key concern is if it affects the authors income. That is my principle.  Gotya: If you look it at scanlation as a whole, it's actually something that's not fair for the author. And yes ofc they get some fame and some will buy some stuff supporting the author. But I dont believe that this is in the majority of the cases and the majority usually dont support the author someway. So buying it from a website isn't really helping the author a lot.Havin said that I do believe that we should buy it as all the bits help.Min: I'm 99% against it but there is 1% for some situation that would leave me no choice but to use illegal raws 

-manga: 

1. a GOOD manga that can't be found anywhere else or out of stock that can only be found from that illegal raws source 

2. very very very expensive manga that i can't afford but somebody donate or gimme the raws, so why not take it? 

3. manga that i can't buy even if it's still in stock cuz i might go to jail (it's yaoi or porn) i love myself more 

4. the boss give it to me

And now my opinion:  (I’m Zero btw)We are actually using pirate raws (those that you can find online) and it’s something i dont do in a proud way, we do it because we had no other way. If we didnt have these raws, we couldnt have worked on them. 

I’m my opinnion, I would like to buy every manga and webtoon we are working (and we are doing it with lots of them)  and we are basically not doing it with EVERY project we have because we have no raw providers (aside @la-cruciatus who has been kindly giving us some raws) or the way to get them with a good quality.Zero~

have i really not written in 4 days? i never realize how long its been, like, it only feels like i just wrote a day o r so ago. i dunno, days are blurring a little bit, so its hard to tell whats up. 

i have 2 appointments, one on the 15th with a psychiatrist for SSI/SSD, and I have aother on the 16th with my usual therapist. 

yesterday i got my fitbit in the mail, i actually prefer it much more to the other one, especially with the thinner band and face. its still touch screen and gets notifications! its just smaller and cuter tbh. though they hardly have any clock faces, i have a stat-heavy one so i can see my BPM just by lifting my wrist, like right now as i type this my bpm is 80. 

ive been working on my comic, and i think i figured out a good schedule. 

Monday: Upload the comic to Webtoon & rest

Tuesday: work on the script and storyboard

Wednesday: Sketch out the whole chapter

Thurs-Sun: line, colour, shade whole chapter

So far im on schedule, and i uploaded a bunch of stuff to my patreon, im waiting for a video to upload to youtube, its like 35 mins long, but its real time speed drawings of me drawing out those panels. 

ive been pretty de-motivated again today, i didnt really know what to do about it, i was sore from running at the gym yesterday, and just generally tired. i tried to push through though bc i know i have work to do, and i know i need to do this. i love the story, especially with the newest additions and edits. It sets everything up perfectly, i think im just getting burnt out. but the burnout is probably worth the effort. I need to keep pushing. 

im doing a breathing exercise on my fitbit rn, im so sleepy, but myfriend has been offline all day so i dont wanna leave her just yet, since we just started talking today. so ill probably stay up another hour or so. 

i cant wait to do episode 3 btw, its gonna be so pretty and nice ugh. winning this contest would be amazing, but i honestly doubt i will. 

anyway, im charging my apple pencil for tomorroe before i plug in my ipad. im pretty sleepy so ill probably be heading to bed pretty soon, i hope my friend is more available tomorrow- i mean, its been nice that shes been busy and working since i get more work done, but i miss talking to her.
