My favorite genre of sci-fi is “small research team goes to a distant plant/star/space station/black hole/etc to study something weird there, and then the weird thing there Wrecks Their Shit.” Can’t get enough of it. “Small research team goes to a deep undersea research station” and “small research team goes to a deep Antarctic research station” are also very good variants of this as long as they get completely rekt by a weird mysterious alien thing there. I love it every time.

It is also important to note that these stories can range from “TPK” to “lone survivor” to “a few losses but most of the main characters come out of this harrowing ordeal alive, if changed” to “everyone survives this harrowing ordeal and they have a new friend now!” but the more characters survive the better the story better be. If it’s a TPK/lone survivor I eat this up and will love it no matter how bad it is (Underwater (2020) starring Kristen Stewart I am vaguing you here. Stupid movie. Saw it on the big screen and loved it). But if most/all of the cast survives, the writing and the story and the characters better be goddamn amazing (All Systems Red by Martha Wells and Wolf 359 by Gabriel Urbina and Sarah Shachat I am vaguing you here <3 )

#However many short stories I love dearly and think about constantly are in this camp also #‘Dead Meat’ by Maria Haskins. ‘The Green’ by Lauren Beukes. ‘All That Touches the Air’ by An Owomoyela has elements of this. #‘The Brides of Heaven’ by N. K. Jemisin also has elements of this #And then podcasts—‘Wolf 359’ obviously. ‘Janus Descending’ is everything I like about this genre. ‘Micro-Cosmos’ does this too which is why #I liked it before it went on Indefinite Hiatus. #and of course this is also about The Thing (1982). Love The Thing #This is just a very good premise and I love the combo of ‘exploring an alien planet’ and ‘oh shit oh fuck oops’ #‘Tides’ podcast is mostly just the exploring part and less Shit Getting Rekt but it’s very good also #And I am still holding out for ‘Primordial Deep‘ to get more bloodthirsty #science fiction #tropes #OH ‘Event Horizon’ with Sam Neill was stupid as all shit. It was also this though and it was Fun. It was not actually good but it was fun

I headcanon that before Night Vale, Carlos was actually kinda scared by horror movies. Like he and his uowii friends would get together for movie nights and just pick apart horror movies because they were so unscientific, but Carlos was actually very unnerved by them and would flinch and jump and have trouble sleeping after.

And then after Night Vale chews him up and spits him out, he just can’t be afraid of them anymore. Like, Night Vale horror movies are probably weird and not comparative, but some of the ones he smuggled in from the outside world are still in tact and he’s just not scared of them anymore. In fact, they’re kind of funny with how exaggerated the horror of them actually is. It’s silly what people think they’re supposed to be afraid of when he’s seen horrors he didn’t even think were possible. And he spends more time laughing at them than cowering.

And then there’s Cecil, who I headcanon is just genuinely afraid of horror movies. Like, he and Carlos will be watching and Carlos is trying to hold back giggles at what’s happening on screen while Cecil is pressing his face into Carlos’ shoulder and whimpering. And it’s cute because Cecil has seen so much worse than what horror movies present, but thinks horror movies are SUPPOSED to scare you. So he’s scared and Carlos is trying to be sensitive to that but is shaking with silent laughter the whole time. And then they have to watch Cat Ballou for the millionth time afterwards so Cecil can calm down and go to bed.
