Premise of Sonic Mars was recycled for Sonic Frontiers.

I discovered that the game's story: Sonic Mars had its premise idea recycled by someone at Sega.

• Sonic Mars = Sonic Frontiers: Sonic has to save his friends from being trapped in a virtual world.

Sonic Frontiers Story: Following the trails of the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic, Tails and Amy fly in the Tornado towards the Starfall Islands, an archipelago of islands forgotten by everyone. As they approach the islands, a wormhole suddenly appears in the sky, sucking Sonic in and separating him from his friends. Upon waking up, Sonic finds himself trapped in Cyber Space, a digital space that resembles places from his memories. He escapes and finds himself on Kronos Island, one of the Starfall Islands. Guided by a mysterious voice, Sonic must now gather the Chaos Emeralds.

When Sonic tries to save his friends, he gains Cyber Corruption. This corruption causes him great pain, but also gives him new powers that he uses to defeat the gigantic Titans that protect the emeralds. Sonic encounters a holographic girl named Sage who wants him to leave the islands. She was created by Dr. Eggman, who is also trapped in Cyberspace after tampering with the Ancients' technology. On Ares Island, Sonic encounters his friendly rival Knuckles, who was teleported here from Angel Island. The mysterious voice that guided Sonic through the islands is released from cyberspace on Rhea Island. This monster is a planet killer that the Ancients tried to stop long ago by sealing it away. Eggman reluctantly teams up with Sonic to stop him and save the world.

What was Sonic Mars?

The game's proposal was prepared on May 17, 1994 by then-lead designer Michael Kosaka with assistance from Chris Senn and Don Goddard. Opting to frame the game in the Saturday morning show that was still on the air at the time, the hope was to make the first fully 3D game about Sonic and his world. Presented to the management of Sega of America, they gave the green light for the Sega Technical Institute to move forward with the project. When shown what the American side of STI was coming up with for the next chapter of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, Yuji Naka, one of the character's creators, could only shake his head and say "good luck", not being very impressed with what was shown and knowing firsthand the difficulties involved in making a Sonic game.

Shortly after the proposal was accepted, Michael Kosaka left Sega due to problems between him and Dean Lester, the producer of Comix Zone. Without a lead designer, Chris Senn was thrust into the role, with Don Goddard reworking the Sonic Mars script. Eventually, the Saturday Morning premise was abandoned due to disinterest, and the game was completely reworked once it changed systems, becoming the more familiar Sonic X-treme.

The game was to be a tie-in to the TV series Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM), but the idea was scrapped as the TV show was never released in Japan. The game had several playable characters that would have Sonic as the default for Player 1 , while Player 2 would choose from five other characters, such as Sally Acorn, Bunnie Rabbot, Tails, Knuckles, and Tiara. There would be several endings where Sonic would have to choose between Sally and Tiara. Some special stages were designed as minigames, like the one where Sonic plays air hockey with Robotnik.

In this game, Sonic would save his friends from a virtual world of Dr. Robotnik.

Summary by Michael Kosaka (1994):

While Sonic checks a security alarm in a remote corner of the Great Forest, his friends Sally Acorn, Bunnie Rabbot, Tails, Tiara and Knuckles discovers a strange message from one of Dr. O.mad scientist is trying to take control of Micro Mobius, a virtual world, and the message is a cry for help from your peaceful inhabitants. The hedgehog returns to Knothole and discovers that Eggman captured his friends and took them to the virtual world. Sonic sets out to save his friends and stop Eggman from reformatting Micro Mobius.

Mini Fanfic #1187: Igniting Rocket Punches Features (Sonic X Crash X Persona 5)

12:54 p.m. at Tails' Workshop..........

Tails: Okay! (Walks Over to Omega, Sitting Next to Coco on the Lab Table, Bringing his Clipboard with Him) After carefully looking over every bits and features of your body parts, I'm happy to say that you're more than qualified for those Rocket Fists you requested.

Coco: (Smiles Brightly) Modified and will be put together by yours truly of course!~ (Pars on Omega's Shoulder) Bet that made you pretty excited right now, huh Big Guy?

Omega: My excitement has never been become immeasurable for a long period of time. (Turns to the Duo) Permission to use it for a test run after the modification are in full completion?

Tails: (Smiles Brightly) Permission granted!~ We just gotta find ourselves an open area for a training ground.

Omega: I have already found the area!

Tails: Oh, already? What it looks like-

Omega shows Tails and Coco a picture of Dr. Eggman's lair on his holographic transmitter.

Coco: That.....Looks awfully like Eggman's place, big guy.

Omega: Correct.

Tails: (Puts on a Deadpinned Look on his Face) You wanna use those Rocket Fists on him, don't you?

Omega: .......Correct.

Tails: ('Sigh') I thought so.

Coco: (Raises an Eyebrow in a Bit of Confusion) Yeah.... What makes you wanna do that exactly? I know he's evil and all, but didn't he also created you at one point.

Omega: Yes, he has created me in the past. (Scowls and Crosses his in Anger) And never bothered to put into great usesince then.

Tails: Eggman locked him inside a storage room for months on end. Had a vendetta against Jim ever since.

Coco: (Starts Huffing and Puffing into a Pout) ('Hmph') Well, I don't blame ya then. (Jump her Off of the Table She was Sitting at) What kind of bozo would keep one of his greatest looking inventions under wraps?

Omega: An Egghead Bozo who will be in a perfectly structured punching range the moment we see each other face to face.

Tails: You need any backup? Just in case things go south.

Coco: (Leans Herself Over to Omega with Bright Smile) We're pretty good with playing support aid and improvising~ (Rapidly Blinks her Eyes at the Robot)

Omega: (Crosses his Arms While Thinking) The possibility of me having difficulties dealing with Eggman would be 90% unlucky...(Simply Shrugs a Bit) But I suppose having a younger, more intelligent couple like you two as backup would not be the worst idea imaginable.

Coco: Yeah, relax! We got this under cont- (Eyes Suddenly Begins to Widened Along with Tails) Wait, W-WHAT DID YOU CALLED US JUST NOW!?

Omega: (Tilt his Head a Bit in Confusion) ........Younger, intelligent?

Tails: AFTER all of that.

Omega: ..........Couple?

Tails: That's the one.

Coco: Omega, who told you that we were a couple?

Flashback to New Donk City

Sonic: (Sitting on an Outdoor Café Table with Omega, Lounging Around on his Chair) Yeahhhhhh, Tails couldn't join us this time of year. (Forms a Playful Smirk on his face) He's spending some quality time with his little girlfriend back at her island for the holidays~

Omega: (Looks Up at Sonic While Holding Up a Newspaper in Front of Him) Tails has a romantic partner this entire time?

Sonic: Not officially. Buuuuuuuuut considering how extremely close the two are, I am definitely positive that it's the case by now.

Omega: Hm. (Went Back to Reading his News Article) Good for them.

Back to the Present

Tails: I'mma kill him. (About to Storm Out Before Coco Was Able to Stop Him in Millisecond)

Coco: (Gently Grabs Hold of Tails' Shoulder and Massages It to Help Calm Him Down) Easy there, bud. There's no need to get upset. We'll get back at him eventually. (Looks Back at Omega) Omega, Tails and I aren't a couple.

Omega: (Raises an Eyebrow) Is that so? Then why are you two, as Sonic previously stated, "extremely close"?

Tails: ('Sigh') It's because we've been best friends since the very first day we meet each other. And sure, we may HAVE talked about a possible scenario of us being a thing or whatever, but we ultimately decided against the idea and remind as we are for now, besties.

Coco: (Happily Hugs Tails) And I'm happy for that, cause Tails is the very first friend I've ever made out of the island and I'll always love him with all my heart~

Tails: (Heart Begins to Melt in Pure Happiness as He Hugs Coco Back) I'll always love you too, Coco!~ (Notices Omega's Hand is About to Rise Up Before Stopping Him) Upupup! Before you say ANYTHING, friends are allowed to say "I love you" to one another in a platonic sense.

Omega: Platonic sense?

Coco: Yep! Meaning nothing romantic at all, big guy!

Omega: (Starts Tapping on his Non Existent Chin) I see. Hold that thought. (Actives his Transmitting Signal on the Side of his Headvto Make a Quick Call)

Meanwhile at Shujin Academy's Classroom......

Futuba: lReading Through a Book While Sittong at her Desk) Come onnnnnn......The answer have to be here somewhere! I can't turn in an incomplete homework sheet without-(Immediately Geys Startled a Bit by the Ringtone of her Phone on her Desk)

We All Danced in Fire~ Trapped in This Machineeeee~

Futuba: (Looks Down to See the Name of the Caller) Omega-kun?

Female Student: (Forms a Teasing Smirk at Futuba) What's the matter, four-eyes?~ Afraid of a little Rock music?~ (Starts Laughing Along with her Peers)

Futuba: (Scoffs While Rolling her Eyes) I'm not afraid of anything, PAULA. My phone just took me by surprise is all.

Paula: Well, you better get of it soon before the teacher gets here. Or did you forget how the school rules work already, shut in?~ (Continues Laughing)

Futuba: ('Sigh') Whatever. (Answers the Call) Heyyyy, Big Guy~ Listen, could you try and call me after school? Lunch is about to be over in a few minutes and-

Omega: (On the Other Line) I am fortunate to have you as my best friend and will forever love you dearly for it. That is all.

'Call Ends'

Futuba Sakura is already in tears as she place her hand onto her chest, creating a short screeching like sound.

Paula: (Groans While Rolling her Eyes) ('Ugh') Weirdo.

Back at the Workshop

'Door Opens'

Wave: I'm heeere.

Tails: (Turns to His Swallow Friend, Walking in) Hey, Wave!

Coco: We almost considered on looking for you, girl. Where've you been?

Wave: I was just finishing up doing what I usually do on a basis: research, organizing work plans, keeping the boys in line, watching someone- (Eyes Suddenly Begins to Widened at What She Was Aboutbto Say) I-I mean! Uh....Watching.....something intriguing from afar. Yeah. ('Clears Throat') That's what I meant to say.

Coco: Really? (Raises an Eyebrow at Wave in Suspicious Along with Tails) Cause I could've SWORN that you said someone. (Turns to Her Best Friend) Don't you think so too, Tails?

Tails: Why, yes I certainly do, Coco. (Turns Back to Wave) Could it be that you have been trying to ask someone out......

Coco: (Leans Over to Wave Along with Tails While Mischievously Smirking at Her) On a date?~

Wave: (Turns Away While Blushing) N-N-No! And even if I did, which I DON'T by the way, why would you squirts care?

Tails: (Casually Shrugs) Cuz we're curious.

Coco: (Crosses her Arms) And we wanna get you back for all the teasings you've made on us thus far. I.E.

Tails/Coco: Karma. (Gives Each Other Hi-Fives)

Wave: (Groans While Rolling her Eyes) Whatever! I don't have any energy or patience to deal with you nosy brats today.....(Notices the Red Robot in her View Before Walking Towards Him) Hello~ What do we have here? (Turns Back to the Duo) You two made this?

Tails: No, not exactly. This one of Eggman's robots, E-123 Omega-

Omega: THE ULTIMATE E-SERIES ROBOT!!

Tails: (Puts on his Deadpinned Look Again) Yeah. What he said.

Coco: We were about give him these sweet Rocket Fists upgrades.

Omega: A perfect arsenal for me to use hit on the doctor with great precision.

Wave: Waitwaitwait. Time out. You're telling you're gonna use those things to punch Eggman of all people?

Omega: (Turns to Wave) That is exactly what I just said, yes.

Wave: ..........Well, screw it. Sign me up.

One Upgrade Surgery Later, Outside of Dr. Eggman's Lair.......

'Knock Knock Knock'

.'Knock Knock Knock Knock Knock'

Eggman: (From the Inside) I'm coming, I'm coming! Sheesh....Can't anyone use the God fo saken doorbell like a normal, less irritating person in society?

'Door Opens'

Eggman: Yes, yes. What is it you want? Omega?

Omega: (Standing in Front of Eggman's Doorway with the Tech Trio Hiding Behind Him) Knock Knock.

Eggman: Uhh.....Who's....there?

Omega: (Points at the Evil Doctor) You.

Eggman: (Even More Confused) Uhh....Me who exact-

Without a second thought, Omega uses his newly enhanced Rocket Fist to punch Eggman's face in, sending rocketing back inside his lair. It's super effective.

'CRASH'

Eggman: ('Arrgggh') My nose....my face....my beautiful mustacheeee!!

Wave: (Eyes Widened in Genuine Surprise by the Results) Well, I'll be damned....(Turns to the Kids Next to Her) You two really outdone yourselves here.

Coco: (Smiles Brightly Along with Tails) I know, right? We made an successful upgrade enhancement today. I couldn't believe it either!~

Tails: Yeah, and it's our first one too.

Omega: Mission Accomplished on both objectives. Prepare to depart from land-

'Ahem'

The gang turbs around to see Eggman's daughter, Sage Robotnik, floating behind, giving each of them the most disappointed Glare she has ever given yet.

Sage: What has happened here?

Tails: S-Sage, hey! We were just....you know?

Coco: Exploring!

Wace: Walking around.

Omega: Punching the Doctor in the face.

Tech Trio: Omega!

Omega: What? Honesty is the best policy. Is what Futuba-Chan usually tells me.

Tails: Kinda find it hard to believe that she would tell you that.

Omega: (Glares at Tails) My best friend's words of wisdom are above lawwwwww!

Wave: Really don't think that how thar concept works.......(Suddenly Felt Her Body Levitating In the Air Along With Everyone Else) What the- Hey!

Sage: Inside. Now! (Uses her Telekinesis to Carry Everyone Inside the Lair as She Begins to Scold Them on Their Troublesome Mission)

Omega: (Walks Himself Inside the Café Carrying a Shopping Bag in his Hand) I have finally arrived with bottles of coffee creamers!

Sojiro: ('Sighs in Relief') You are a lifesaver, Omega, thank you. I can't begin to tell you how many customers has been chewing my ears off over their coffees not having cream in them. Almost considered retiring for a moment there too.

Omega: (Habds Sojiro the Bag od Coffee Creamer) You will have a proper retirement in due time.

Sojiro: ('Sigh') Yeah, I will. Can't imagine giving my café up to anyone just yet.

?????: OMEGA-KUUUUUUUUN!~

Sojiro:: (Chuckles Lightly Once He see Futuba running over to Omega and Hugging him Very Lovingly) Especially to a hyperactive fireball like her.

Omega: (Gently Pats the Top of Futuba's Head) Greetings, Futuba Sakura. How was your time at the Shujin Academy today?

Futuba: (Rolls her Eyes a Bit) Ehh it was so and so. (Snuggling onto her Embrace with Omega) I thought a lot about you today and I love you too, manl. So much~

Omega: Is that right?

Futuba: Heck yeah!~ You're like one of my best pals EVER! How can I not!~ I really wish I could take you academy with you weren't so big and huggable!~ (Stands on her Tippy Toes and Gives Omega Five Kisses on the Side of his Metal Head)

Omega: That is truly unfortunate indeed. (Smiles Brightly) On a lighter, more cheerier note, I have now obtain the Rocket Controlled Fists Upgrade and have successfully punched Eggman in the face.

Futuba: (Eyes Widened in Genuine Surprise) Ah dude, seriously!? I knew I should've skipped school today!

Sojiro: (Raises an Eyebrow at his Daughter) What was that?

Futuba: I-I mean! Uh....Skipping my way towards school. Like a...good, educated girl I am (Giggles Awkwardly)

Sojiro: Yeah, that better be what you mean, young lady.

Omega: Do not fret, my gremlin friend. I was successfully able to record the event from a first person perspective. (Taps the Side of his Head, Revealing Holographic Video of Eggman Getting Rocket Punched to the Fist in his Point of View)

do I like them:

It actually took me some time to warm up to him, but once I began writing fanfics with Espio in a central role, absolutely!

5 good qualities:

I like his shtick as The Serious Straight Man amidst his much wackier colleagues, and the world they inhabit at large. But at the same time, he actually is just as whacky and silly as everyone else, he's just better at hiding it! His own brand of humour both stems from his serious persona and the fact he's still just as silly as the rest of the Chaotix, and I think that makes for a very interesting character.

He's a ninja. Ninja are cool! Honestly, he probably only is a ninja because ninja are cool, but you know, Rule of Cool simply is a thing.

He's an incredibly competent detective, but I like how the games do not pin all the good ideas and skills on solely him. Instead those are given to Vector (like how in Heroes Vector was the one ultimately realising their client was Eggman), and Charmy occasionally causes a breakthrough as well (like in the finale of ShTH with hacking the computer). It's nice to see that Espio is not put in a position wherein he does all the work where the others bumble around, but that instead it is showcased just why the Chaotix consist of three people, not one. It makes Espio more grounded for me; he has his flaws and he's not the perfect detective.

In Rivals 2, I really like how he was willing to hear Silver out, despite Silver being his suspect at the time. To me, it shows how Espio values finding the truth over simply dissing out justice for justice's sake. Silver ultimately was (partially, since Eggman Nega also collected Chao) responsible for the Chao disappearances, but because he did it for a good reason, Espio was willing to help him out instead of convicting him. It gives a nice balance between Espio's desire for justice versus ensuring no-one is treated unfairly.

I like how his ninja skills are not only presented as him being Super Ultra Cool; he is noted to also be opinionated, somewhat stubborn, and can definitely be smug. I think such things add a nice touch to his character!

3 bad qualities:

We don't see him enough... sigh. Honestly, in that way he is a little bit like Silver, except that here there is no excuse of him needing to travel from the future to play an active role. But to be fair, Charmy has it a lot worse than Espio in that regard, and the rest of the extended cast other than the main four plus Eggman also experience it. But I do feel like the Chaotix in general can be quite minor characters.

I can't really think of anything else, to be honest? Espio's portrayals so far have been solid, so I truly have nothing to complain about!

A mere personal gripe, but he's not shown enough with Silver. I'd love for more interactions between the two of them!

Espio is the one responsible for all the housekeeping in the detective agency, because I can't for the life of me imagine that Vector and Charmy would pay any attention to it. Thus it falls on Espio's shoulders to clean, cook, and do the groceries; assuming they don't just get take-out. He occasionally tries to rally the other two into doing a bit more work, but so far the results leave much to be desired. On the other hand, Espio can be enough of a control freak to not mind the sole responsibility, because it means he can do things in the way he likes it best.

Well, who could have predicted what went down between SA2 and now. And I imagine if certain events went differently, we might some things would be way different. Especially when English is telling one story and Japanese telling another. (He wasn't the only character who experienced writing issues, his in particular just became "unfocused" after a while until they started scaling back the cast a bit.)

Hmm, probably would have helped if he had more kids around his age to interact with frequently. Cream slowly faded to the background {to her fans' dismay}, Marine is in Blaze's dimension and good luck finding Charmy interactions. Closest thing now is Sage and that's a mystery for now.

I think his theme song pretty much laid out his aspirations and still holds true for his Frontiers story in both versions of it. Presented differently in it and SA2, but ultimately the same goal: Finding his own style and path. (How far his potential goes really depends on him, so him pushing himself in different ways [and perhaps at times too much] could make him discover more things about him he hadn't before. That, wanting to show his friends his new skills is a good motivator too. xD)

I don't expect a drastic timeskip either; at most it'd probably be a few years. I'm sure they want keep the characters relatively similar-looking in nature if they ever decide on any physical or outfit changes to fit their current story, but not disrupting the iconicness of the designs. It's not the same as making an adaption with a different art direction. (Heh, I actually like the idea of him having a ponytail, to go along with his tails. Like Bark's, but shorter. But I can see them going for stylized models; the Mario crowd has been going nuts over "Wonder".)

In Boom's case, since it was meant to be its own subsection, the characters having designs that distant them from their Modern selves made sense from a marketing standpoint. Mixed on release, warmed up since but not wholly. At least wasn't the early concept art, Sega stomped down hard to get what we got. (It was mainly Knuckles and Sonic that got most of the criticism, with Amy to lesser extent, and Tails having little to none. Heck, some think his Modern self SHOULD have the goggles and toolbelt. Funnily enough, some did like the idea of a bulkier Knuckles, just not top-heavy, and more like his ancestors. And I have seen some scarf/adventure-looking Sonics here and there. And the surprise that was Vector, that leather jacket does suit him.) In any case, making changes isn't easy. Execution matters so much.

Considering that Eggman has a Vtuber model now; that'll likely mean other characters down the line, depending on the topics that pop up. (Though Shadow does feel like he's next. Hoping that his is mainly him and Tails before Sonic inevitably pops in, which is a recurring gag for that series.) But yeah, just a few fun shorts. Nothing crazy.

Yeah, his development from sa1 to sa2 made sense, it's unfortunate that it didn't work out in the long run.

Actually... idk about that. I feel like interacting with the other kids a lot would only highlight how more mature he is compared to them. When with his own friend group of older friends he still comes off as more childish than them. Maybe if they'd leaned into "youngest characters all being friends" from the start, but we'll never know now.

(Though take this with a grain of salt since maybe I also have a bit of resentment over people trying to metaphorically "banish them to the kids table", as if they all need to hang out with each other just because they're the same age.)

Yeah "Believe in myself" is a great theme for Tails and I feel like. You need to listen to it to understand him as a character, though I feel like it fits what he's going through in Frontiers somehow better than sa1? Like, a lot of the stuff mentioned in the song you can't really get from his story in the game itself (or maybe I just. forgot or wasn't paying enough attention). (Though it might also be the case of them writing frontiers and using the song as a baseline for his character and arc, while in sa1 it was probably the opposite)

Maybe they will change up some clothes!(Tails with a little ponytail? Aahhh it would be so cute) (I do agree with those people I wish Tails had goggles and a toolbelt in the mainline series. Maybe not on a permanent basis but at least goggles when he's flying? On the other hand, I do enjoy the main characters all having pretty simple designs. I also agree with Knuckles being bulkier, I like what they did for the movie, it just makes more sense for the type of character he is)

I only brought up Boom as an example of people reacting negatively to the redesigns, and it wasn't even canon.

Man Shadow could give us so much lore. I need the next season of TailsTube now (I can't believe it was a whole season? 4 episodes? Tails you hack) Man I really want some Tails & Omega interactions. I need to know what their relationship is like in canon. Or Cream? You could use Cream for the Chao lore. Aahhhh.

Basically Shadow was just walking by and saw a bunch of kids bullying a rabbit and her chao, now, he could have just minded his own business but he has standars, he respects real strong people, not those who step on the weak because they just happen to be bigger or older and try to feed their fragile ego (Even if we are talking about literal kids, he takes it a bit too seriously) so he just steps behind Cream crossing his arms and glares down at them with absolute contempt and EVERYONE and their pets knows who's Shadow-who-has-destroyed-the-village-10-times-in-a-row-because-he-wanted-to-fucking-Hedgehog, and they run away like their ass is on fire thinking the rabbit they were bullying is gonna die in their place or smth.

Shadow THEN goes on his day but Cream. Follows. Him. Around. To to top it all of she's not only annoyingly polite she just simply... isn't afraid of him. Like. At all... Ok, he normally isn't that scary anyways but come on, he has a reputation to keep!

(The next scene)

Vanilla isn't happy when her daughter brings the most dangerous hedgehog of the whole island for a tea party. Shadow couldn't say no to the little rabbit, she's... persuasive. At least he tries to be a decent guest, given how awkward the whole situation is for both.

Somehow Cream also finds his cave, as long as she doesn't break anything he helps her with homework and teaches her self defense, much to Vanilla's chagrin, also several surviving skills (I kinda see her as a girl scout, she always runs first to his cave to show him her new insignias, he's so damn proud)

Rouge teases him so damn much about it, he can't even flip her off like he normally does because there's a child present-!

(Flower crowns, Flower crowns, Flower crowns-!!!!)

I can see him in the middle of a fight with Sonic, he goes through a wall in a cafeteria and lands right next to their table.

-''Morning, Mr. Shadow''.

-''Morning''.

-''Are you going to come home for dinner tonight? Mom is gonna make fruit pie!'

-''Yes, of course, uh, excuse me a second''.

(Gets out to keep fighting Sonic)

At this point I think everyone just rolls their eyes when this two fight and go on their day unless debris is involved XDDD

Imagine he teams up with Eggman again but when he's in the middle of wrestling with Sonic he notices Cream is in danger, he IMMEDIATELY flips the blue hedgy out of the way and runs to save her, no matter if he gets injured in the process. Nothing else matters, nor his mission either his rivalry, he can't let THIS one specific child be harmed in any way, shape or form. (Maria flashbacks intensify)

(I think also Shadow doesn't have many regards about his own safety or wounds because of his healing factor, which leads to him becoming somewhat self-sacrificial when someone he truly has grown to care about is in great danger, listen, he's gonna be fine, if he wants to be a meat shield he's gonna be one and there's nothing you can do about it.)

(He's a wild card too, as quickly as he can side with Eggman he can also turn on him if he as much looks wrong at the kid.)

Pls, gimme soft Shadow bonding with a child and also the inevitable having to deal with his trauma because he unconsciously projects his inability to protect the two people most dear to him and the idea that he's absolutely unworthy of any kind of love and/or affection into almost everything he does, like, he gets an ugly ass drawing of him with flowers and everything and he's gonna cry, I swear-

I just made some more headcanons for your enjoyment in one day aegean lets gooooo

I like the whole opposites attract kinda thing so i find great enjoyment of thinking about Shadow wearing a leather jacket and shades while his companion is decked out in pastels and cute food related jewelry. Although the reader looks like an easy target they aren't, it is not something they talk about much but they use to train self defense a lot. Even if the reader can sometimes seem dim-witted, Shadow has seen them fight and just how much work they put into their crafts.

Another thing that I think would be a cute scenario between Shadow and the reader is if the reader had a tendency to make hand crafted presents for their friends, like a small wooden model of a plane for Tails or a pink heart patch for Amy. Shadow would cherish every item that you make for him and he makes sure that they're polished and clean, this can also be said for Metal Sonic.

Now Knuckles is interesting, for starters he lives on an island with the sole duty of protecting the master emerald, now imagine if that level of devotion and need to protect was brought onto you. He would constantly be with but it wasn't always like this, his obsession started off slow and barely noticeable. The first weeks into your relationship he's had this need to protect you, mainly from Eggman or any of his robot henchmen but also just from anyone in general. Knuckles isn't a big fan of PDA but if it keeps the douchebags away from you then it's worth it, so when you're out on the town he will have his hand(s) somewear on you, it's either on your hip or your shoulder. Maybe even your hand “gasps”. It calms him down knowing that you're there at arm's length if something were to happen. Like i said earlier he's not very big on PDA but when you're alone he's a cuddle bug, kinda. At first he asks if he can hold your hand but after a few months he just picks you up and leaves to go to a private place to cuddle in. Or on bad days he will crawl into your lap and just kinda stay there without saying anything as you brush your fingers through his fur? hair?? quills??? Whatever they are and he's content once again. But the slope to insanity soon chases Knuckles into his nightmares the longer you are apart, and that's when things start to get ridiculous. He would start asking if you can hang out at his island more often but after a while those questions would become demands.

Infinet is the kind of yandere that would make you watch your parents die along with everything you hold dear too, you see that painting that you made gone, oh look at that pretty family heirloom demolished, is that yo- vapourized within seconds. Now Mephiles is a heartless monster and he shows that by making you relive your friend's death over and over again. I personally wouldn't be too surprised if Mephiles accidentally or intentionally killed you at several points, he just finds your reactions so amusing and so dues Infinet. Although Mephiles usoly works alone he tolerates Infants presence if it means geting a chanse to see someone else torture you. Even though Infinite can have his lesser tough moments don't be fooled by it because in another timeline he gauged your eye out at Mephiles request. Mephiles lives for your screams and hopelessness, that emptiness in your eyes as he lifts your chin up to look at him. It's only then that he considers reversing time and doing it all over again, and that dues mean he gets to see Infinet paresh within his grasp, as his body contorts into ways it shouldn't. Pieces of bones stick out of open wounds as he screams in pain right before your eyes.

Werehog Sonic is a feral yandere that usually acts on his senses, he's still his old self but with less impulse control which leads to some unwanted scenarios, like the time he barked at the neighbor because they were playing music too loud and that woke you up. Just like a dog Sonic is loyal and won't let you get kidnapped anytime soon which means Metal is going to have difficulties. And if Metal won't stop harassing you two then… murder isn't often on his mind but Sonic might consider it just this once. Like Metal hadn't considered it already but he held back because you were there. Sonic in this form is really fluffy and will curl around you whenever you're cuddling or sleeping, he sometimes uses his tail to playfully slap you or tickle you. He likes making you giggle.

Now that we're on the topic of supernatural beings, how about a yandere vampire Shadow, now as a being of darkness Shadow only has the time to hangout when it's night. Shadow hates the thought of using or even asking if he could take some of your blood by biting you, he would make sure that he was well fed the night before visiting you but sometimes that neck of yours locks really enticing. Maybe if he's hungry enough and with your gentle voice encourages this action he might oblige, but not without making sure that you're comfortable and that you feel safe, you even create a safeword (consent is the sexies thing on earth, howl if you agree). You would think that you would be entranced by him but he's entranced by you. You're just so warm and he's not, you make his dead heart thump with just your words, he feels chills go down his spine with your touch like it's a defibrillator bringing him back to life one hug at a time. And he would be damned if something were to happen to you.

Now these headcanons are fun and all but consider how they would react if you became a monster *eyes emoji*

Shadow with cute pastel reader

The opposites attract, I eat that shit up. Shadow being the cool "edgy" hedgehog who doesn't take shit from anyone & anyone who tries gets a bullet to the head while to his side y/n is just covered in pastel outfits with colorful food-related accessories that'll just make anyone nauseous by looking at you from how bright you look but keep their mouths shut unless they want to deal with the ultimate life form. I can imagine Shadow is extremely soft with you like this & even buys you more bright outfits & accessories.

But others shouldn't underestimate y/n, bitch will fuck em up. Though Shadow is happy & admires that you can defend yourself from danger, he likes the idea more of being your personal guard.

This are the types of weapons y/n most likely uses as self defense

Shadow/Metal Sonic & Gifts

Shadow would definitely cherish each item you make for him, his heart swells since it reminds him that you think of him! & he would 110% throws hands with anyone who tried to touch them, the smallest speck. Metal Sonic would be 20x more protective of them since I'm sure he's never been given a gift in his life. Any bot who lay a finger on your gift ends up with an arm ripped & Metal Sonic gives you something in return (by sneaking to you without alerting the others, especially Sonic).

Yandere Knuckles the Echidna

He'd be the perfect protective platonic yandere. I always imagined that since Knuckles lived most of his life on Angel Island alone, he'd be very socially awkward cause, who has he been chatting with on the island? Zilch. & since he is very protective with the Master Emerald he would undoubtedly be protective of his obsession, y/n. The concept of him being secretly a cuddle bug just- it gives me serotonin, like you have this tough, red echidna with such power that he's able to halt Sonic in his movements with his bare hands, a creature of honor, who can read & understand ancient languages & an expert of surviving the wilderness– who just wants to nuzzle into y/n to feel their warmth & feel a connection he never got back on Angel Island. I just-

Yandere Infinite & Mephiles

Like stated before here there would be little to no fluff with this two. They both can also technically be categorized as sadistic yanderes as well, but out of the two Infinite would be better but not by much. Infinite is that one cat that's just an asshole for no reason, destroying your shit & making your day/life more difficult. Terrifying would be an understatement with Mephiles, he thrives for your fear & hopelessness. He wants to be the reason you cry, the reason you tremble with horror, the reason you're in despair. Infinite would dangle some hope infront of you, like your freedom, only for Mephiles to take it away from you & bring you back into the void of despair.

Yandere Werehog Sonic (w/ Metal Sonic)

Werehog Sonic is a mixture of a golden retriever & a husky, but thankfully he doesn't shed much. Privacy ceases to exist with him, he's the type of dog that would try & follow you to the bathroom wagging his tail & is hands down a cuddle bug as well, gently putting his tail in your fair. But it could also be him trying to cover you in his scent (to let other werehogs/people in general know that you're taken). Metal Sonic definitely is going to have trouble since Sonic just doesn't leave you be. Like, the moment Metal sees you without Sonic he's taking the opportunity.

Yandere Vampire Shadow

Imma say that I live for the fact that you write yandere Shadow as soft & that's gorgeous mmmmwah. But yeah, he makes sure to be well fed before visiting you, hell he might even some extra just to be safe. You have to hide all the garlic in your home or make sure the scent of it is gone else he won't go in. Fuck, you encouraging him that he can take a sip out of your neck as you wrap your arms around him, letting him feel your natural warmth makes him go weak in the knees, you truly have this man around your finger. He would a thousand times if you're still okay with this.

& yes, consent is the sexiest thing on earth

Ok here me out but, Sonic Underground Amphibia AU. Now, you may be asking, “Zack, what does that mean you absolute wet napkin” and I have answers.

Basically it’s Amphibia, but it’s the Sonic Underground cast, with Sonic as Anne, Sonia as Sasha, and Manic as Marcy. Except in this au the triplets would be humans and get zapped to a strange land called Mobius. I have some ✨ideas✨ in terms of who would be what, although there are some spoilers so I’m putting them below the cut

Sonic as Anne

Obviously we would have to put Sonic in the main character place, he would be a normal teen that gets zapped to Mobius via a strange jewel (aka a chaos emerald) that his brother found in a thrift store. Shortly he first arrives in Mobius, he is found by

Tails as Sprig

The second oldest child of Vanilla, he is Sonics best friend and an all around sweet heart tbh, he has two siblings, including an older sister

Amy as idk just pretend there’s another Plantar Kid

Amy is the (mostly) level headed eldest child of Vanilla, being about the same age as the triplets. (Also disclaimer, Sonamy is not a thing in this au)

And a younger sister

Cream as Polly

Cream is the youngest and only biological child of Vanilla, she’s very sweet and kinda naive sometimes, which is why her siblings have to keep her out of trouble.

Vanilla as Hop Pop

Vanilla is a mother who lives on the outskirts of town with her three children, she’s more than willing to take Sonic in once he’s been proven to not be a threat.

I think that Cosmo should be Ivy Sundew partially because she’s a canonical Tails love interest and partially because I love her, but idk who would be the assorted Wart Wood (I hope I spelled that right) villagers, if you guys have any ideas let me know.

OK SPOILERS for Amphibia season two past this point, and a few for season three, not many though as I probably won’t be getting into season three territory as much.

Sonia as Sasha

Sonia is Sonic’s sister and the oldest of the triplets, she kinda has a bit of a Gifted Kid complex ngl, when she fist showed up in Mobius she joined The Eggman Army through unspecified means (aka I don’t remember how Sasha joined the toads)

Eggman as Grimes

Ok I know what you may be thinking, why isn’t Eggman Andreas? Well I’ll tell you, it’s because I like kinda stupid almost anti-hero Eggman who really isn’t evil and just wants to fight Sonic and helps the gang out sometimes, aka X!Eggman. Eggman is Grimes.

Knuckles as idk imagine that Grimes has like, an apprentice or somethin

Another one where I’m inserting a character into a nonexistent slot, I know this doesn’t really make sense but I want Knuckles to be friends with Sonia and also have something to do with Eggman.

Manic as Marcy

Manic is Sonic’s brother and the youngest of the triplets, he has a bit of a stealing problem, it was never to serious, a swiped pencil or other trinket, but eventually he started mixing in with the wrong crowd in school, this got him into a lot of trouble. After a particularly ambitious “prank” gone wrong, Manic gets picked up by the cops, this leads the triplet’s mother, Aleena, to consider sending him to a boarding school of sorts. Not wanting to be separated from his siblings, Manic runs off and finds a mysterious gem that is rumored to be a gateway to other worlds. He calls his siblings to come and check it out, under the guise that it’s a birthday present, unfortunately, they accidentally activate the gem and end up in Mobius.

He’s also a vocaloid fan, and yknow that scene when Marcy first shows up? When she slides down the rope? Well when Manic does that he’s playing World Is Mine by Hatsune Miku

Manic ends up in a city called Mobotropolis, where he meets the king of Mobius.

This is where it gets a little tricky, because I am not well versed in Sonic villains, and I haven’t played any of the games beside Forces, so if any of you guys think of a better person for Andreas’s role let me know

Infinite as King Andreas

King Infinite is the benevolent king of Mobius, who decides to appoint Manic as his royal advisor, he’s very nice and kind and- haha jk he’s evil. He wants to go to Earth using the power of the Chaos Emeralds and stabs Manic, then possesses him with Phantom Ruby juice or somethin

Vector as Commander Yunan (I hope I spelled that right)

Idk I just think it would be funny

Espio as Lady Olivia

He’s kinda similar to he I guess, I just think it would be funny for Team Chaotix to have an episode with Manic

Oh jeez almost forgot, Frobo is Emerl, this is because I grew up on Sonic X and in Sonic X Emerl is a robot that Cream adopts, but has to punt into the ocean because it went haywire, and I think that works for this.

Irony

Okay maybe I'm thinking a bit too much buuuut one thing I liked about The Eggman Cometh is this little bit of irony.

The episode starts with Natalie in the process of making chocolate chip cookies.

And the way it's presented, she seems to know what she's doing, I think it was the way she picked out the ingredients so swiftly [ or did I imagine that, idk I couldn't find that episode anywhere from the ~websites~ I normally watch shows from 😅, I think it was taken down]

Anyway, the point is Natalie is seen as atleast a decent cook, if not good.

But then, later in the episode Kevin says,

Kevin: I mean, what would a dragon want in there Dysentery from her cooking?

He's basically saying Natalie's cooking sucks, so bad that even a dragon would get sick from it, which is different from what was implied in the beginning.

[And lol he looks so pleased with that little comment]

Also, besides the point of this post, I thought it was a little weird how Kevin was quick to dismiss the whole dragon idea. I mean Gwen was right, they had seen dragons before. Even if not, if it was an alien, Natalie wouldn't really know that and would've concluded it to be dragon anyway since it looked like one.

What I could think of is that she probably is someone who exaggerates everything.

Maybe after finding out that aliens seemed to be more common on earth than she thought, she could've become paranoid. Probably assumed anything slightly out of the ordinary was an alien or something alien related.

It also leads to me to believe that it probably wasn't the first time she called Gwen about something bizarre. Like maybe calling her about a flickering lamp saying there was a ghost or maybe a chair in the dark looking like some kind of monster.

The first verse:

Right off the bat, I think this is about Shadow, especially with the lines about the "dreams beautiful and grotesque" that are always altering. Shadow has suffered memory loss before and we've seen that sometimes they are blurred.

Like hot summer (Na, na, na) Just dash (Na, na, na)

The catchy part of the song! Just dash = running. Obviously, yes! Did you know SA2 was released in the summer? 👀👀 Therefore the events took around that time, right? Right?

Scorching sun show me the way My compass please don’t leave me now

Noooo way, you know who looks like the freaking sun too? Super Sonic, everyone! Hence, 'scorching sun' could be a reference to Super Sonic, the transformation that Shadow saw Sonic last turn into before plummeting to the planet. Maybe, it's the predominant memory that could never be tainted, no matter who tried to manipulate the Ulitmate Lifeform's mind again. Remember this: "Sonic reached out to save me before I fell to Earth from the Ark. If I hadn’t waved him away, Sonic would have fallen with me, but his determination in trying…I’ll never forget that." 💛 Right there, at that moment, Shadow was staring into the eyes of Super Sonic, beautiful amber ones. Also, surely, Shadow thinks Sonic is like his compass, guiding him because of what he witnessed during the events of the Ark.

Verse 2:

Oh, must I stop I’m addicted to this hazy dream Oh, days gone by I can't see the familiar me

Particularly that last line, it gives me Shadow-vibes. If there's something we know about Sonic and Shadow is that somehow they manage to change one another in different ways. Ahem: "If the world chooses to become my enemy, I will fight like I always have!" I don't about everybody, but I like to believe that Shadow definitely got the inspiration for doing this from Sonic, the hero that's always fighting for Mobius no matter what.

The bridge:

Exhausting agonizing thoughts Between the horns So keep it going, keep it going on right now Just keep it running, keep it running up right now You're trapped by the same choices You’re frozen not knowing what to do Then take my hand and run

Shadow has plenty of agonizing thoughts that exhaust him because he's always thinking, pondering scenarios about the past and the future, struggling to find his path at times in the present. Again with the running, but oooh, 'trapped' and 'frozen' are good words! Shadow has those moments where's he debating between what to do (ShTH game had different endings depending on what he picked 🤔). Maybe, this can also be a reference to his duty with GUN, following their orders, because if he didn't, he would receive consequences, maybe even public backlash. You know, sometimes, those agents and the Commander don't know what's best. Sonic, on the other hand, has been doing this for so long...who would you trust more? Also, these lines I imagine Sonic's speaking to Shadow, given that the words 'you' and 'my' are used.

Actually...maybe these last lines could be directed to both in a way. ASdfghjkl mind explosion 🤯 Like, the title is called, Tamed-Dashed, and according to an interview and the music video itself, I think it's about a journey, where the boys believed they were being tamed but wanted to dash away from it. It's fitting for Shadow; numerous people, including Eggman and GUN, wanted to tame him but he never felt right with it. That's where he would 'dash away' and Sonic came into the picture...as the freaking sun!

What kind of sports are we talkin about

Casino AU Eggman was pretty much into all the same things that I imagine his main universe self being into

He liked to do boxing, wrestling, and karate to learn and improve his fighting skills in all areas. He was also very strong back then and was constantly improving it. Casino AU Eggman didn't know that it would come in handy for him especially because of how common it is for him to get into physical fights in the present. It's one of the only things he can actually still do well, despite his weight.

Being as chubby as he was back then wasn't a problem for him, in fact his weight was perfect for some activities. He was immovable to some and that made him unstoppable with a great upper hand and power over them. People were also very jealous of his arm strength and length because it made him great at any activities involving throwing and he'd set all the records.

The length and strength of his legs were also envied by many because he was great at hurdles, track and field, long jump, you name it. He was good at sprinting because he was fast and had stamina that he could only use in bursts but he had the skill to utilize it. These assets were also good for BMX, which he did a bit of as he's always had a thing for bikes, though he has a huge preference for motorcycles with his E-Rider.

His width and height also gave him a great advantage in football/soccer and rugby/football when it came to blocking, stealing, and tackling. He was also perfectly built for basketball but everyone shorter than him found it very unfair because nobody else stood a chance! XD He greatly valued the usefulness of his speed, strength, and flexibility and was sure to use it all to it's full potential back then.

While he has his favorites there wasn't a lot that he wouldn't participate in because he wanted to prove how skillful he was and show off in any way he could. But if it involved teams, he'd act like he was also competing against them to prove himself as superior. They were annoyed by the way he wouldn't really play for the team because he wanted the spotlight on him lol

And also, like I imagine for main universe Eggman, Casino AU's favorite of all was swimming! He was very fast and talented with many different styles. He enjoyed diving and made big splashes but they weren't enough to empty the whole pool back then heheh. He always genuinely had a lot of fun in the water so it was one of his biggest hobbies and one of the sports he did the most of.

When it comes to Casino AU Eggman, it's especially hard for people to believe that he was ever capable of doing all of that! If he were to ever tell any of the stories of his success in sports, those that weren't there to see it would have severe doubts and there'd be no way for him to demonstrate to prove it in the present, aside from his fighting skills because it's the one thing he's still got.

Eggman's evil is so entertaining. He manages to be badass and have a whimsical/childish flair at the same time. The dude has a giant amusement park of doom and destroys his enemies with cute candy-colored animal robots( GUNs military bots were not match for them lmao) ! I really love how he uses his childishness as a strength!

Yess it is!! 🥰

I love how being a manchild is officially considered one of Eggman's character flaws and it shows in how he'll have big explosive tantrums when he fails, will cross his arms, thump things, and stamp his feet when he doesn't get what he wants/can't do something his way, and how he acts like a rude selfish brat, feels entitled to everything from attention to ruling the entire world and demands it and will take it by force. It's always super funny to me

But then at the same time, his childishness can be a part of his what makes him so charming and fun and can be a quality. Because he's so passionate about his theme parks, carnivals, and circuses, he has toy-like robots he puts in funny outfits with fun colors, cute animal robots with clever creative designs, and shows a playful silly cheekiness in some of his evil as much as he can be serious and menacing too. I adore seeing how much fun he has!

I enjoy how he has childlike giddiness and glee and very excitable boisterous behavior for an old man. And how he takes things meant to be innocent fun for children like theme parks, carnivals, circuses, toys, etc and makes them extremely dangerous and disturbing, designed to kill and that's his twisted idea of fun. And his cute robots are made to destroy and kill and can be powered thanks to the cruelty of trapping and shoving poor critters into them!

Having dark disturbing truths behind those fun happy cute things and malicious intent in his actions that can be sugarcoated by all of it as people can easily be fooled and deceived by it is very fun and adds so many layers to his villainy and impact when he still manages to be a serious deadly destructive threat. It makes you love it and be entertained by it but also realize how deeply messed up it is if you're paying attention. It's so fascinating!

Much like how he's egotistical and narcissistic, his childishness also has a big part in his personality, interests, behaviors, actions, and motivations too. He's not himself without it. I can't understand those who want him to grow and develop out of it when it adds so much to his charm. And it's not like he's any less of an intelligent genius that's very skilled and powerful and capable of having the master plan and can't be serious, dark, and threatening too.

The way he can do both at once is great. It adds so much to how messed up and disturbing he is when he can dress up depraved evil in ways that seem cute, colorful, and fun. And how he can be a seriously dangerous threat and cause globally catastrophic atrocities and be so evil and cruel and fucked up, while also being underestimated for seeming so silly, crazy, and childish too, which adds impact and surprise to how dark and fucked up he can get.

His childishness can be presented as a character flaw and other characters will judge him for it but at the same time, it can be one of his greatest strengths in the way it adds to how charming and entertaining he is, and it gives the evil he's still very capable of even more impact! He's passionate, imaginative, creative, dreams big and enjoys having fun but goes about it in the evilest most messed up of ways, fully aware and intending it and loving it.

He doesn't need to grow up, it's not like he isn't still smart and capable of being serious, powerful, skilled, and a very real threat at the same time because it goes hand in hand and is balanced out perfectly with him. He doesn't ever need to let that spark of youth in him die, he doesn't give a fuck what people say about his tastes and interests, he does what he wants and what he loves and has a blast and that's all that matters to him. It's so awesome I love iiit 💜💕

So, about the movie...

At long last, a week after it came out, I was finally able to see the Sonic movie. The Daytona 500 being held across the street from my favorite theater and conflicting work schedules had been keeping me away, but now I’ve finally seen it. And it was...

Decent!

Which is way, way, way, way, way better than a movie with this awful premise has any right being. That’s for damn sure. I enjoyed my time at the theater. I don’t know how they did it, but they did it. If you like Sonic and haven’t already seen it, you will probably get a kick out of this film. If you don’t like Sonic (or Jim Carrey), there is very little in this movie for you

Okay, now that that’s out of the way, it’s time to break that whole movie down. This will contain full spoilers for the Sonic movie

This movie kinda gave me deja vu because it’s set up so similarly to the Bumblebee movie. Both open with a slavishly faithful CGI sequence on another planet to ensure long time fans that the creative team gives a shit, but a conflict sends the title character to Earth. There, they form an emotional bond with the human lead as they’re pursued by the bad guys, who are working with the US government and tracking the energy signature of the title character. This setup worked extremely well for Bumblebee, because it’s so similar to the usual plot of Transformers. For Sonic, it was... a mixed bag. But it worked better than I expected

That opening though, huh? Green Hill Zone looked great, and I was pleasantly surprised to see they did, in fact, use the Hyper Potions track from Sonic Mania in the actual film. (The piano rendition of the Green Hill theme used later was also lovely.) Longclaw was also interesting. I’ve seen one person bring up all the bird-themed ruins in Sonic 1 and 2 as a possible source of inspiration for the character, and I think that’s a valid take. And man, the echidnas! I wasn’t expecting that AT ALL. I guess that was probably the Knuckles Clan or something? I would never, ever picture them being alive during Sonic’s lifetime, but like... I guess Knuckles had to come from somewhere, right? If they do another movie with Knuckles, will the rest of his kind have died out?

Sadly, though, this sequence felt like it was over in a heartbeat. We barely see Sonic’s life on his home planet, and we’re expected to feel emotional over Longclaw’s sacrifice when she only gets like three lines before Sonic is sent to Earth. This is a common theme with the film--it goes for these big emotional beats that it just does not earn with its rapid fire pacing

Anyway, then we fast forward and Sonic’s a teen. This is actually kind of an interesting one if you’re constantly neck deep in Sonic Character Analysis like me, because it’s a pretty different take on the character. It’s hard to give them credit for doing something somewhat fresh with the character, though, because like... how much of that was intentional, and how much was just Hollywood writers trying to squeeze a generic action-adventure movie out of Sonic? (Honestly, it’s probably mostly the latter.)

The closest other piece of Sonic media to the movie would probably be Sonic X, a story in which Sonic isn’t really the protagonist. The Sonic of the anime is fairly emotionally distant. He cares deeply about his friends, and does nice things for them, but he’s totally fine with running off on his own for extended lengths of time, and he doesn’t really talk about his feelings. He’s not the character the audience is meant to sympathize with, but is instead this cool older kid who Chris wants to impress. This is pretty much in line with how Sega likes to depict the character. He cares about his friends, but he’s also cool with being a loner. It feels like he only runs into them incidentally, usually when Eggman is causing trouble, and then when the crisis of the week is taken care of he’s back to going on his own adventures. There’s a reason why one of his catchphrases is “long time no see”

The Sonic of the movie is the polar opposite. His main conflict is that he’s lonely and desperately seeks friendship. He’s also an overly-eager, extremely earnest goober. He literally flosses twice. (Which I loved.) I’ve seen him compared to Silver, and honestly, that’s not a bad comparison. I did like it, though! I don’t mind Sonic being a more emotionally open character, like he was in a lot of older Western media. I mean, he cried in like the second or third episode of SatAM

It’s just that, like many things in the movie, it feels less like a deliberate creative choice and more like a logical string of decisions to make when writing a generic action-adventure film for general audiences. Sonic’s the only one of his kind on Earth, so of course he’d be lonely. He has to have some sort of arc for audiences to connect with him, and if he’s gotta be accompanied by James Marsden for the whole movie, well, his arc’s gotta be about them becoming friends

I’ve gotta say, though: Ben Schwartz is great as Sonic. As much as I like Roger Craig Smith, I wouldn’t complain if he became the new main voice of the character. And thanks to the redesign, he looked great. I can’t imagine how nightmarish this movie would’ve been if Sonic wasn’t cute

My main fear with this movie, though, was that Sonic wouldn’t really be the protagonist. As a fan of Transformers, I know all too well that the cost of doing a full CGI character usually means that said character can’t really be the star of the film. Optimus and Bumblebee aren’t the stars of the Transformers movies--they’re supporting characters who are primarily present for the sake of the action scenes. The humans are the real stars in those movies, and the robots are barely even characters. I was terrified that Sonic would be the same, with the actual character I paid to see taking a backseat to James Marsden The Cop

I’m not quite sure if they struck the right balance there, but they did better than I worried they would. Sonic is central enough to the film and gets enough screentime that you can easily say he’s the protagonist. BUT there is absolutely too much of Tom and his family. The human cast is fine, the performances are fine, and there were a few good jokes, but every time the movie tried to get me to care about Tom’s life I was bored out of my mind. It’s just so trite and passionless. The other characters barely felt fleshed out at all, including Tom’s girlfriend (wife?) and Agent Stone. The little girl who gives Sonic the shoes had some cute moments, though

I do, however, love the part in which James Marsden is walking around in a San Francisco t-shirt, to remind us that he’s planning on moving to San Francisco... which then becomes the excuse for Sonic to think about San Francisco and accidentally send his warp rings there, which becomes the excuse for the buddy road trip aspect of the film. And as much as that was a focus of the marketing, the actual road trip part is like... maybe 20 minutes of the movie? There’s like three scenes with Sonic and Tom on the road and then they’re in San Francisco for act 3. The movie tries to act like they’ve formed this deep bond and I just did not give a shit. I don’t care about the cop. All Cops Are Bastards, and that absolutely includes Tom, whose dream in life is to join the extremely corrupt San Francisco PD

The whole excuse for Sonic having to sit in the passenger seat of a car going the speed limit for a good chunk of the movie is also, just. Stupid. If he doesn’t know where San Francisco is and time is of the essence, just... give him a map?

And then there’s Jim Carrey. I was worried about this one. The previews tended to highlight his most Jim Carrey Being Wacky moments, and as fond as I am of movies like The Truman Show and Bruce Almighty, that’s just. That’s not Robotnik. I was pleasantly surprised by the actual movie, though! I thought he was pretty good. I’m not sure what incarnation of Eggman I’d most compare him to, but like... it was close enough, and he was entertaining enough. I’d pay to go see another movie with him as Robotnik. Sure. (Especially with how he was looking at the end of the film.)

There were some other little interesting tidbits here with Eggman, although again, a lot of that is less “let’s do a new take on Eggman” and more “let’s do a marketable movie with Eggman in it, which requires us to explain some stuff.” Like him straight up just being a normal human from Earth, with none of the confusion present in the current “two worlds” canon of the games. Or him apparently being an orphan who was bullied in school, and who trusts machines more than other humans. It’s a safe way to depict the character in a Hollywood movie, but I thought it worked

The way they got to his nickname was kind of funny, though. Like, obviously they didn’t put Jim Carrey in a fat suit, and thank god for that. So instead of mocking his weight, the nickname is derived from the egg-shaped robots he uses. Which made sense, I guess. It at least felt logical for this incarnation of Sonic, who had annoyingly been calling Tom “Donut Lord” the whole movie, to make up the nickname “Eggman.” (Said robots, by the way, were a weak point of the movie to me. They just didn’t have that Eggman whimsy and felt very safe and very Hollywood. Honestly, though, if they had just made Robotnik’s ship grey and slapped some hazard stripes on it, it’d probably be fine.)

As a whole, I thought the humor of the movie was... okay. Sonic had a lot of good moments thanks to Schwartz’s great performance, as did Robotnik. There were just so many weird lines, like James Marsden telling Robotnik that he was breast fed, or the agonizingly long child trafficking joke with Sonic in the duffel bag. Stuff like that

The action was great, though. They definitely owe a lot to the Quicksilver scene in that one X-men movie (I forget the one), but they had a lot of fun with Sonic’s powers and it felt extremely true to the character. Seeing him do one of his Smash poses during the San Francisco fight was great. The action scenes were an absolute delight

And then the ending. Oh, that ending

So, I had already heard that Tails shows up in the stinger before I saw the film. And when I heard that, I expected it to be like, the classic Tails origin story. Maybe Sonic would return to his planet, and run into this precocious kid who decides to follow him around... but no! Not at all! Tails is already the Tails we know and love. He’s already an inventor, he’s already tracking down Sonic. I’m shocked that Sonic actually stayed with Tom instead of running off to have new adventures, but hopefully this is a sign that more characters will be brought into the fray if they make a sequel

And boy, they better make that damn sequel. This movie had a great opening weekend and a positive reception. They have no excuse not to. GIVE US SONIC AND TAILS GOING ON AN ADVENTURE

Other stray thoughts

Holy shit they put Sanic in the movie

The Sega logo animation meant that Kiryu from Yakuza was in this movie for a few seconds

The pixel art credits sequence, which featured both the Sonic 2 special stage and Get Blue Spheres as well as the Eggman logo screens from the Studiopolis Zone boss, was cute

The Saturn logo could be seen on the diagram of the other habitable planets

Robotnik had a label for “Badniks” on his circuit breaker. I wonder if the drones in the movie are intended to be Badniks, or if we’ll see actual ones if a sequel gets made

Also, was it implied that Robotnik committed war crimes for the US government

One of the government guys who I think only got one line was played by Garry Chalk and as such sounded exactly like Optimus Primal

I can’t tell if Sonic getting a red race car bed was an intentional shout out to the Archie comics or if it’s just a coincidence, but I loved it

A dude about my age wearing a Sonic Mania t-shirt literally stood up and clutched his head in shock when Tails showed up

After the movie a very excited kid got his mom to take his photo with the Sonic display in the lobby. Afterwards he was so excited that he flossed

I can’t believe they talked about Olive Garden so much

My Top Ten Favourite Moments in Sonic Games

The past 30 years the Sonic series has had a lot of memorable moments, too many to list fully, so in celebration of my recent follower milestone, today I’ll be presenting and explaining my personal top ten favourite moments. I would like to emphasise that this list is very subject and is highly influenced by my personal experiences with the Sonic series. It’s not intended to be objective by any means, and I would love to hear what moments you guys would put on your own lists! Additionally, this list is only for things from the games, in the future I’ll make another list for other Sonic media

Without further ado, let’s get started!

10) City Escape’s GUN truck

Interesting set pieces and small scripted moments in levels have been a staple in the Sonic series since the beginning. Sure, they’re not always challenging from a game-play standpoint, but they’re always an entertaining spectacle. One of the most ionic of these moments (and one of my personal favourites) is being chased by the GUN truck. City Escape is already a highly memorable level from the get-go, but the truck sequence is the cherry on top. An additional shout-out to both of the Generations versions of the level for not only bringing it back but changing it up just enough to surprise you and keep you on your toes!

9) Escaping Null Space

Forces is one of those games that I would describe as a truly mixed bag. Yeah, there are a lot of things about the game that kinda sucked or were disappointing, but when it hit a high, BOY did it hit. While I agree with many people that having the Null Space portion of this level actually have gameplay in it would’ve made this moment impact a little harder, I’m just in love with that transition from the silence of null space to the bombastic chorus of Fist Bump. I thought it was a really exciting moment that hypes you up for the rest of the level.

8) Sonic Heroes’ opening cinematic

Heroes was my first 3D Sonic game, and consequently it was my introduction to a lot of things that are staples for the Sonic series. Vocal themes, an extended cast and their interpersonal relationships, story routes that connect to each other. These are some of my favourite things about the Sonic series, so even if some aspects of the game aren’t that great, I could never ever hate or even dislike Heroes. I feel like the opening cinematic to Heroes (the one with the theme song as the music) is the aspect of Heroes that really encapsulates those feelings best. I must’ve spent hours as a kid letting it play over and over again singing along to it.

7) Shadow the Hedgehog (2004) title screen cinematic

Before you laugh, here is where I must remind you that this list is extremely subjective and highly influenced by my personal experiences and memories. Ok now imagine this: you are a 7-8 year old kid, and your experience with media that isn’t mainstream radio or educational children’s tv shows is fairly limited. You’re getting deep into the Sonic series for the first time thanks to playing Heroes and seeing some of the cartoons and you’re interested to know more about the series. You visit Sonic Central, the official site at the time, and they have a music player with a variety of songs from the games. One of the songs it plays is I Am (All of Me). I won’t lie, I was a little blown away because I’d never really heard anything like it before, so I go to find out more about the game it’s from and I come across that opening cinematic.

I think it’s very, very, easy as an adult to laugh at the Shadow the Hedgehog game and it’s… direction, but adult me was not the target audience of that game, kid me was. Say what you want but the effect that game was going for I think is something that just hits best with sheltered little kids, and I’d be curious if anyone else had a similar experience.

6) The ending of Sonic and the Black Knight

I won’t go into too much detail on this one, since this is very much a fan favourite moment and many others have gone into detail about why it’s so great. Black Knight is certainly one of the games that captures Sonic’s character the best, and his words at the end of the game certainly encapsulate this. Followed by the amazing credits theme of Live Life, the ending of Black Knight is certainly one of the most emotional moments in the series.

5) Sonic Generation’s credits

Anniversary games can be a bit of a controversial subject for the Sonic fandom; 06 was one of the games released for the 15th anniversary while Forces is often considered to be a 25th anniversary game. I think Generations really achieved the feeling and the specialness of a celebratory event though. It’s one of my favourite Sonic games and the whole game is full of brilliant moments but I feel the credits really evoke the celebration vibe: a Sonic 1-esque music melody as the credits song, showing footage from the original games each stage is from, and the cherry on top: a ‘Happy Birthday’ message to Sonic recorded from fans who attended the 2011 Sonic Boom and Summer of Sonic conventions. It genuinely warms my heart every time I finish the game.

4) Metropolis Capital City level

Forces gets another representation on this list! Honestly, I believe the parts of Forces that were exciting, such as this, really demonstrate my opinion that Forces had a lot of potential to be a really good game. But I digress, this was my favourite level from Forces because it shows how fun of a villain Infinite could be. The way that Infinite follows you for most of the stage and uses illusions to fuck around with the stage itself? That’s really fun, and it’s not just stage gimmicks for the sake of having a gimmick, it ties into the powers of the villain and makes the player feel involved in a way because Infinite is messing around with you specifically and is having to make to think on your toes. Granted, part of makes this stage stand out so much in a good way is because it’s so different from the rest of the game and it takes you by surprise, so maybe the impact wouldn’t be as hard hitting if this sort of design was used more in the game, but c’mon when you have a villain who’s powers are illusion-based, the sky’s the limit!

3) Sonic Unleashed’s opening cutscene

Can you believe this game came out over a decade ago and the opening cutscene still looks this stunning?! Depending on who you ask, some might even argue that this cutscene has yet to be topped, and honestly, I’m in that camp. Not only is the rendering beautiful and the choreography of the action exciting, but this scene does a wonderful job of setting up for the viewer regardless of how much prior experience they have with the series who Sonic and Dr. Eggman are, as well as setting up the events of the game. I recall being very happy when I heard the animation team for this cutscene would also be handling the animation for the movie.

2) Beating Sonic Unleashed for the first time

So, this is another pretty personal one. I played Unleashed for the first time a few years ago and it is in my opinion, one of the most difficult Sonic games. Sometimes intentionally, sometimes for completely bullshit reasons. My first ever run of Eggmanland was around 40 minutes long and apparently that’s considered a pretty decent time for your first go, but christ it was a nightmare to finish (looking at you, that one section where you have to platform on pipes without a drop-shadow). The following boss sections weren’t much easier- I don’t rage much with video games, I tend to whisper swears under my breath at most but that part where you’re running on the Gaia Colossus had me screaming in anger every time I lost a life.

BUT when I finally beat the difficult sections? Felt like finally cracking your back after feeling stiff all day. Like taking the first sip of water after a walk on a hot day. The relief and satisfaction I felt was indescribable and slowly winding down while Dear My Friend plays as the credits theme was blissful. I don’t play difficult games that often so Unleashed is one of very few games that I have this sort of memory with.

1) Watching my dad get the good ending of Sonic 1

Here’s a small amount of backstory for this pick. My dad got his first job at 19 and he used his first pay-check to purchase the then newly released Sega Mega Drive. He had a lot of games for the console including Sonic the Hedgehog. He kept the console and games in good condition, and they were still perfectly playable by the time his first child was born (aka me!). Sonic 1 was the first video game I can remember playing at roughly 2-3 years old. I wasn’t good enough to get past Green Hill Act 3 but I loved watching my dad play through the game.

I’ll admit; his playstyle’s a little odd, he avoids speed when he can and instead, he likes to search for as many rings and extra lives as possible, but it was so enjoyable to watch nonetheless. The best bit was whenever he would manage to get all the chaos emeralds in a playthrough and be able to get the good ending. Sure, the only difference between the good and bad endings is just some flowers, but it was nice to see him be happy that he was able to achieve that ending.

And that’s the end of my list! Upon looking over it I realise most of it is either openings or endings to games…oops. I suppose they tend to be parts of games that get special attention during development since they bookend the journey. When I get around to making the second list, I’m sure it’ll have more variety, and as I said before, I’d be very interested in hearing what everyone else’s favourite moments are!

I always liked thinking of Silver as a time traveler turned man out of time, where the calamity he originally was sent back to correct like iblis in the games, ended up being prevented but stopped him from being born as well, so his present no longer exists like to rid iblis was a trade of ridding one future for another, idk. He, however, can't pop out of existance since time mumbo jumbo, so he stays in the past and travels around seeing potential futures, and how he can prevent another timeline like his. Solves some problems and thematically is an interesting concept of a man with no time to return to and is always for him in the present, since his "future" no longer exists. Idk. I like this concept and tragic Silver with an optimistic attitude is my favorite.

I think that something along that angle might indeed solve issues with Silver's appearances, namely the question some fans have about why he is featured in spin-offs when there's no emergencies in his era happening and the like. For me the justification that he simply likes hanging out with his friends is enough for that , but I do believe it is an interesting idea to have Silver remain in the present forever. His original future is gone, though that is for the better, but indeed: we have no way to knowing whether he 'belongs' in any newly-created future. Does he have a family or friends there, or does he just get dumped inside a new era with no history to speak of? I myself prefer having him be near his friends in the past rather than needing to build up a whole new life for his own again, though I do believe him to be capable of the latter. Still, once a future is saved and Silver permanently lives there, it does indeed become a bit odd that he just shows up for whatever in the past (even if on occasion he actively gets invited, like TSR). If he already lives in the past anyway, it might be less implausible that he just happens to be present for whatever fun activity is being planned. The bar is lower, so to say,

I also quite like the idea of Silver 'seeing' potential bad futures while in the past; I can imagine that is a huge responsibility to bear! But in that way, Silver's role in the games, namely that of preventing bad futures from ever happening, can still be fulfilled. I think the tragicness of the concept would depend on how often such an onset of a bad future occurs, but I think most of it can be linked to Eggman. And since Sonic and co are already fighting against Eggman on the regular, Silver himself can pop in there easily and help stop things from going awry. And as for the time mumbo jumbo, time travel already does not make sense and is inherently paradoxical, so the idea of Silver remaining in the past for good instead of disappearing does not seem too implausible to me within that whole concept, haha. Overall, I would quite like it if Sega went and confirmed Silver lives in the past for good for the above reasons, though I don't think they might do so. But it's interesting to think about!
