So, according to Ian Flynn on the Bumblekast, SEGA put Shadow under lock and key during the Sonic Boom era, which means that he literally has no (known) backstory and, as Ian suggested, he might as well be some random guy who has Chaos powers and a habit of antagonizing Sonic for no reason, and he definitely has some history with Sonic going by their interactions.
Point is, I'm intrigued and I definitely want to do an analysis on Boom!Shadow with the little information I've got... which now I realize is gonna be less of an analysis and more me speculating and creating my own headcanons, but hey, that's all you can do in this situation.
I would love to hear other people's opinions on Boom!Shadow before I share my own ideas, tho.

My favorite and least favorite version of Shadow the Hedgehog is the one from Sonic Boom. In Boom he's a terrible representation of Shadow as a whole character and what he initially represented. But he's a fun character to experiment with because, I can make Shadow's initial backstory 10 times worse.
Like imagine instead of the Space Colony Ark being nice at first and then rated by G.U.N., but now it was always supposed to be a government weapons facility. Maria's still in the picture cuz he needs her but she is the only redeeming aspect about his life.
And one day they deem him too dangerous too much effort to control (maybe he hurt Maria). So they put him in cryostasis. And he's woken up by Dr Eggman, Eggman not knowing how to control or work with Shadow, he just runs off and now he just lives in a cave trying to forget the horrific of Space Colony Ark.
He's angry at living beings for treating him nothing more than an object to experiment on. He's lived through the worst and still has yet to experience the good it has to offer besides those short moments with Maria.

Okay, bear with me while I’m trying to process something here…
It’s kinda interesting how we’ve seen two versions of Shadow that don’t necessarily explore his past a whole lot. One being Boom!Shadow, the other Prime!Shadow. As far as we know, we don’t have an idea of what each Shadow’s past is in each universe. In order to understand Shadow and who he is as a person, one must immerse themselves into various Sonic games. Here, Boom and Prime are banking on us having an idea of who he is without going that deep into it.
I’m not saying that Maria Robotnik isn’t important. She is—she’s inspiration to Shadow. I think what I’m trying to say here is that it’s interesting to see how both versions of Shadow share their views on the world without a Maria Robotnik there to inspire them. One was completely consumed with darkness and this need to be overbearing, the other is lacking in sleep and tries to gear his actions on what is best to save everyone. Where do these thoughts and views of the world come from then? What factor influenced both Boom!Shadow and Prime!Shadow to think and feel the ways that they do on humanity and the planet in general?
Does that make sense? I don’t necessarily know where I’m going with this. I think I’m just pointing something out as an observation.
