Looking for a turnkey home but can’t find one in today’s inventory? You might consider a remodel. According to John Burns, founder of JBREC & realestateconsulting.com, predictions indicate higher equity and a larger opportunity for homes on their “prime” remod years.

My advice, as a REALTOR & a person who has done remods (both good and bad) there are a few easy things you can do to maximize the experience:

1. Talk to your REALTOR—whether you are remodeling your home or purchasing a home to remodel it is important know the potential limits of the value of the home and the neighborhood. You never want to “overbuild” and change your equity position from positive to negative.

2. Take your time to create your vision—have a clear idea of what you want and be prepared with visuals. The more specific, the better instructions you can give your contractor & ultimately the happier you will be with the end result.

3. Set your budget—after doing your research set a budget, but be prepared for unforeseen costs and be prepared to prioritize materials and/or design elements in case you have to spend less for something of lesser significance to splurge on that one thing you really want.

4. Hire a good contractor—take your time, do your research to vet them; look at past work, in-process work, talk to colleagues and do as much research as possible because a contractor can make or break the project. And make sure you also are comfortable communicating with said contractor because that is equally important.

Here is the progress so far on our Cedar Shake project. We previously posted the before pictures and the start of the restoration process. Now we have more pictures as our Deck Restoration Plus Restorer stripped and restored these shakes before we added our Brightener. Once dried look how amazing these 20-year old shakes looked! Customer was so happy they didn’t want gray shakes and asked if we could make them as natural as we could. Anything is possible with Deck Restoration Plus Deck & Wood Stain. We mixed 2:1 our Burlington Gold with Seneca Brown and Holy ***, look at the results!
