It's hard to express just how deadly British skies were during the Industrial Revolution. The air was filled with deadly particulate pollution.

Here’s a photo of Widnes, a town outside of Liverpool, in the late 1800s:

And here’s a photo of Leeds from the early 20th century:

Scholars estimate that, by the late 1800s, London’s air contained more than 600 micrograms per cubic meter of particulates.

This meant that the air in London was literally off the charts — these levels of particulates would make London’s air worse than “Hazardous,” which is the highest level (worse than “Very Unhealthy,” which is worse than “Unhealthy”) on the United States’ Air Quality Index. The EPA’s recommendation in hazardous conditions is to “avoid all physical activity outdoors.”
