@sothebys ・・・ Step into a time capsule of royal grandeur… The Hôtel Lambert was built in the early 1640s and designed by one of King Louis XIV's favorite architects, Louis Le Vau, for the financier Jean-Baptiste Lambert. Testament to its grandeur, the house featured a gallery by Charles Le Brun, painter of the ceilings of the vaunted Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. This marked the beginning of a long history of distinguished ownership and impeccable taste. Once home to Voltaire and the Rothschilds, host to Chopin and Delacroix, Princess Grace of Monaco and Elizabeth Taylor, its rich history dates back centuries. It was listed as a historical monument in 1862 and has long been regarded as a jewel in Paris’ crown. Starting in Paris this October, Sotheby’s will offer a selection of treasures from the collection: French furniture – including important examples by André-Charles Boulle and Adam Weisweiler, French gilt-bronze mounted porcelain vases, as well as objects with illustrious history from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Prince Adam in vain suggested a French and British mediation between Austria and Hungary, and his agents did their utmost to win over the Turks to her support. But his efforts aimed in the first instance at an understanding between the Magyars, Slavs, and Rumanians; he tried to persuade Kossuth and his government of the necessity of reorganizing Hungary as a federation, and to prepare the Slavs and the Rumanians for a compromise. He even achieved an outstanding success when on May 19, 1849, the Magyar representatives, Ladislas Teleky and Francis Pulszky, met the plenipotentiary of the Slavs, the Czech statesman Francis Rieger at the Hôtel Lambert, and after a long conference, at which Prince Adam acted as chairman and mediator, they signed an agreement providing for the restoration of peace and the unity of St. Stephen’s Kingdom on the lines which he had proposed. But the Hungarian representatives were sharply disavowed by Kossuth, who violently opposed the terms; a suicidal attitude, which he regretted too late in exile.

Unabashed opulence by Valerian Rybar and Jean-François Daigre. The mirrored salon at Daigre’s Paris home was inspired by the Galerie des Glaces at Versailles. The lavish and excessive duo, often described as “the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers of decoration”, were “go-to” interior designers for the Parisian elite, often turning down low budget projects due to their grandiose style. The hôtel was built by the masterminds behind the Palace of Versailles; Louis Le Vau and Charles Le Brun. The residence has been home to some of histories most famed and celebrated people from Voltaire, Baron de Redé and the Rothschild family. Guests to this hôtel particulier have included Frédéric Chopin, Eugene Delacroix, Franz Liszt and later Salvador Dali, Comtesse Jacqueline de Ribes, Princess Grace of Monaco to name a few.
