Reflecting on @theaffirmationsummit 9.22.2018. Yesterday, I had the honor of being the Keynote speaker for one of the most original, unique, authentic, healing & affirming events/experiences. If you missed it trust that you MUST be at the next one because it was indescribable & amazing is not descriptive enough for it. What many don’t know is... what I planned to share was very surface level. But God made me revamp & re write my entire speech the night before. He made me dig so much deeper. So much so, that as I was re-writing, I was literally balling crying having to revisit details that I’ve never shared with anyone before you all. Not even my closest friends. But God Loves each woman who attended so much that He needed and wanted to each of us to see ourselves, heal & be whole. He wants us to... “Persevere to Freedom”. Learning yourself, facing your truth, and forgiveness are never easy tasks. My facebook status after Season 2 episode 2: Hella Questions, read “taking applications for friends like #Molly!” We all are looking for that friend who really has our interest to the core. Insecure on HBO not only is one of the top shows to tune into on a Sunday but it has most of our attention because it’s so relatable. While Issa is going through her life on what to do with her relationship with Lawrence on if he’s really moving on and her career, Molly still remains to be that friend we hope to have in our lives. Issa and Molly’s friendship is untouchable from the safe word, “Malibu” which mean keep it very honest with me. Also, that’s where their friendship mended when they realized they need each other and is truly there for one another. Molly will pop up at Issa’s former beau job just to see where #Lawrence head is at. Some women really do have that authentic friendship, that is like a blood sister. A friend is a person who acts as a supporter and has a bond of mutual affection their not your enemy and usually on the same side as you. Unlike Tiffany or Kelli who is messy most of the time, Molly will be there for whatever Issa wants to do. The best aspect of seeing this friendship is you wonder do you have someone or someones that or down for whatever? A true sight on what a real friendship looks like.These black women are showing that theirs legit individuals who see you as their equal, no competition and want to be there for you through it all. This is the positive things we as women really want out of our friendships with no judgement and being real. I will definitely be taking notes on how to be a better friend. She started her modeling career at the age of 15. In 2011, Dionne walked in a charity fashion event given by Atlanta socalite, Mrs.Bo Talley ( Williams). Mrs. Talley- Williams later contacted Dionne for an upcoming casting call. Shortly after, she was signed to Blaq Pearl. She was an original member of Talley’s plus sized model team. In March of 2012, Dionne Reeves-Grubbs created a facebook page dedicated to encouraging, inspiring, and empowering plus sized women and so was born, Full Figured Fierce. She felt there was a lack of respect given to this community and she wanted to help those who suffered with low to no self esteem. These issues could be due to circumstances in their past, hurtful remarks and the barrage of photographs that displayed plus sized women in a negative light. Positive images, words of encouragement, and building confidence in her followers through mirror time and love letters, Full Figured Fierce made its mark on social media. Fast forward 3 years, almost 30,000 followers worldwide, and a proclamation from the Mayor of her hometown declaring March 22, Full Figured Fierce Day, Dionne’s dream has now turned into a full blown movement and she shows no signs of stopping. Still modeling, Dionne is hired for show across the country, such as, 1426 Fashion Week in Houston and Portland Fashion Week in Oregon,plus designers Kenneth Doswell of Betty Jean Couture and Lavender’s Jungle, and celebrity shoe designer Tyler Bailey. The African-American Natural Hiar Journey

TALLAHASSEE, FL – In California On Jan. 13, Tamera Mowry-Housely posted a photo on Instagram of her “Big chop”. In turn, Mowry-Housely received major support from the natural hair community, becoming one of the many high-profiled women to join the natural hair movement. A movement thousands of African-American women say is about much more than hair. It’s about identity both cultural and divine.

The African-American hair journey dates back to the trans-Atlantic slave trade, Slaves with straighter hair and fairer skin went for a higher price at auctions. During this time slaves also struggled with their belief in God, they wonder how could there be a God if they constantly went through harsh treatment.Anita M. Cobb, Pastor of God’s Grace Christian Church in Indianapolis, had this to say about hair and the history of African-Americans, “It almost separates you from God. Not that anything can separate you from the love of God, but sometimes you just can’t feel that connection anymore. When you are talked down to so much, you don’t understand how God could possibly love you. Why did God create you if people were going to treat you like this”?

Paulletha Bruce, Pastor of Freedom Baptist Church of Greenville , in Greenville, S.C views support the idea that hair and God are coherent to one another, she says it is all about embracing oneself and a personal relationship with God. Bruce says, “I think that the deeper your relationship with God, the more you begin to discover the love for yourself that’s always been there but has been tainted by the cares of this world”.It wasn’t until the 70’s that African Americans began to embrace their natural roots, regardless of how nappy they are. Natural hair is nothing new, social media and celebrity naturalist have repurposed the movement.

Lyneisha Watson, Contributing Writer and Social Media Manager for Honeybenatural.com said this, “I am a budding Social Media Maven, at least in my eyes. I have recognized that we live in a world that is governed by technology, and I along with many other naturals have taken advantage of that. Thanks to social media, individuals are able to make a living off of their hair, but more importantly they are able to connect across lands and distances… I speak highly of social media and its impact on the Natural Hair Community”.

African–American Woman will continue on this hair voyage and embrace themselves as well as their hair. Natural hair is a lifestyle that takes a lot of dedication, and it is safe to say that natural hair is not a trend but a part of a continuously evolving African-American.
