I've been thinking about the similarities between these two recently

the color schemes these two scenes have is so similar and no one talks about it

And something I find very interesting is that Atsushi states he's giving Kyouka a reason to be worthy of living, which is what Akutagawa was trying to give her and what he asked Dazai to give him

Also while not directly Kyouka & Akutagawa related I feel the need to note that Akutagawa imitates Dazai's treatment of him

So yeah Akutagawa & Kyouka's similarities make me sad

I actually love Higuchi so much and think she's really underutilized... BSD is full of fanciful personalities, which only makes Higuchi's ordinariness stand out more. Hands down, she's probably one of the most relatable character in the series. She's a woman in her mid-twenties, trying to make ends meet, and questioning her direction in life. Lots of people can sympathize with how Higuchi feels, I think.

As much as I want her to have her own moments of badassery, I also want her to continue to be average. Because her being average is what makes her her. She struggles with the knowledge that—surrounded by eccentric people with magical abilities and tragic pasts—she's just normal.

I think that's what makes her truly badass. Mori all but literally gave her an 'out', when he asked her if her current job was suited for her. She had the option to leave all the magic and madness behind, and she didn't take it! She's even one of the higher ranked operatives of the Port Mafia, without any supernatural ability. Higuchi is average while existing in the same sphere with a cast of extraordinary people, and that alone is amazing.

Of course, it's also been hinted at that she might have a hidden ability herself. Personally, I don't think she's hiding it on purpose. Rather, I suspect it to be something that would go under the radar, even to the point that she herself hasn't noticed it, similar to how Atsushi didn't know he had an ability up until he was kicked out of the orphanage because of it.

Higuchi is extraordinary, but she's too caught up in her self doubts to realize it herself.

I would also kill to see this woman in some pretty lingerie. Like just imagine her wearing some pretty lacy white lingerie, or maybe black if a certain mood strikes. She’d be all shy about it, probably hiding behind the bathroom door after she got changed, refusing to leave. Id have to coax her out of the bathroom, telling her how gorgeous she looks. Once she’s finally able to leave the bathroom, I’d take her hair out of her signature bun and run my fingers through her hair, grabbing a hair brush and brushing her hair. Knowing her, she’d probably melt in my hands. It’s fine though. I think it’s cute.

on the note of things that would be different was there no misogyny in bsd or it's fanbase -

yosano and kouyou! this i think is a classic example of "pair the spares" because i cannot recall a singular time they have canonically spoken. i think it's an excellent ship - but it does exist because these are the characters that are left when their occasionally-shipped male counterparts have a different m/m ship. it also exists because anyone who does want to write or see a lesbian relationship doesn't have much to work with - yosano & kouyou are the only female matches for each other because of their age and the lack of strongly written female characters in bsd.

(this is all to say - i love the ship. i love people who write about the ship. i think they'd do excellently together.)

gin would be much more popular in general if they hadn't had the reveal that she was just an androgynous girl

higuchi's entire arc wouldn't have been around akutagawa - oh, and i think it's interesting how canonically she does have a crush on him and fandom often ignores it entirely... less by moving on from it in a meaningful context and more pretending it never happened.

yosano's ability being incredibly sexualized and most appreciation of her being sexual in nature and ignoring the intricacies of both her character and her ability, which is partially to blame on bones' for how they showcased her ability.

10. with characters i struggle with

i will complain about writing dazai every day all day. this is from a wip!

Dazai drops himself onto the chair next to Kunikida, such that their knees are touching. He leans in, face uncharacteristically serious. “Don’t push yourself too hard.” Kunikida feels a lump in his throat. He coughs into his fist, looking away. “You should follow your own advice.” That usual carefree smile returns as Dazai throws his hands into the air, rolling his eyes. “Whatever! I wanna go home.” “Go on, then.” “Alone?” Dazai pouts, poking Kunikida’s arm. “What if I fall over and die? I’m still wobbly, you know. Someone needs to accompany me or I may—” “Alright, I get it,” Kunikida sighs. He glares at Dazai, who beams innocently. “If you weren’t healing, I’d punch you.” “Hehe, Kunikida-kun should do it anyway.” Dazai bats his eyelashes and Kunikida seriously considers giving in.

definitely lucy and higuchi! one day i Will convince everyone to ship higulucy. however all i have for them rn is this from the sskk highschool AU but i prommy... they'll get their own fic

They turn, coming face-to-face with Lucy. Akutagawa recalls that Lucy was making her own dress and is extremely impressed with her look. Lucy’s gown looks straight out of a dream, with layers of creamy tulle. She wears a soft brown corset and has matching silk gloves on too.  “You made that?” Tachihara asks. “That’s so cool!” “Thank you,” she giggles. Her smile suddenly drops. “If I don’t go home with a million pictures of my masterpiece, I’m going to be upset.” “Let’s go take a picture right now!” Higuchi says, oblivious to the slight threat. She links her arm with Lucy’s, smiling so hard that she looks like the sun.
