𝚌𝚑𝚊𝚛𝚊𝚌𝚝𝚎𝚛 𝚌𝚑𝚊𝚛𝚝
character’s full name: khione hima goossens.
reason or meaning of name: khione is a name of greek origin meaning 'snow'. it is also the name of the greek goddess of snow. hima comes from the name himavat, the personification of the himalaya mountains (and in the stories it is said that the goddess saraswati is himavat's mother; coincidentally, khione's mother is also named saraswati).
character’s nickname: kie (among many other nicknames).
reason for nickname: easier to pronounce.
birth date: april 21st.
𝚙𝚑𝚢𝚜𝚒𝚌𝚊𝚕 𝚊𝚙𝚙𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚊𝚗𝚌𝚎

height: 5'3".
body build: oval/apple shaped.
shape of face: round.
eye color: warm brown.
glasses or contacts: neither.
skin tone: warm.
predominant features: face. it's round and cute. and more often than not, it's the first thing people notice. kie often scrunches up her nose. so people notice that too. her most memorable feature is probably her smile. for a cryokinetic, her smile is quite warm, indeed.
hair color: black.
type of hair: long, silky.
hairstyle: shoulder length if not a bit longer. mostly kept loose. sometimes in a messy bun or a pony tail. other times in two braids, or just one.
voice: see here.
physical disabilities: siphons people's body heat when she touches them and therefore tries her best not to touch people - technically not a physical disability but she sees it as such.
usual fashion of dress: depends on the day. at school, it's mostly a blue shirt and a white skirt and ballet flats. she also has a light blue messenger bag on her person at all times. on the rink it's a hoodie or a nordic vest and leggings. other times it's a loose carmine blouse or a t-shirt underneath a green coat. mostly it's a denim jacket with a top or a t-shirt underneath, jeans and sneakers.
favorite outfit: this one, this one and this one.
jewelry or accessories: a golden necklace which is a mainstay because she's had that one since childhood. sometimes (but not always) rings and bracelets. tends to paint her nails a lot.
𝚙𝚎𝚛𝚜𝚘𝚗𝚊𝚕𝚒𝚝𝚢
good personality traits: sweet, loyal, thoughtful, gentle, responsible, generous.
bad personality traits: people pleaser, insecure, perfectionist, morbid, withdrawn.
mood character is most often in: focused and vigilant, if only because she doesn't want to turn outside areas into a winter wonderland nor does she want to turn people into icicles. aside from that, she's also always on the look-out so she can keep herself from accidentally touching someone (because the mere thought of the damage she could do to people stresses her out immensely), and if she does somehow accidentally touch someone, she's immediately on the look-out for signs of hypothermia or other such things setting in.
sense of humor: khione likes puns and, surprisingly enough, morbid jokes.
character’s greatest joy in life: hanging out with family / friends; ice skating, ice sculpting.
character’s greatest fear: hurting her loved ones with her powers, being alone, getting kidnapped by katie baxter again.
what single event would most throw this character’s life into complete turmoil?: her friends
character is most at ease when: she's on the ice, working with snow / ice or is in the presence of her friends / loved ones.
most ill at ease when: she's alone without anything / anyone to distract her from her own thoughts.
enraged when: her family / friends are threatened or in danger; when her parents treat her like an extension of themselves; when her parents (or other people) force their opinions onto her.
depressed or sad when: she's reminded of the times she's (accidentally) hurt people with her powers.
priorities: learning how to control her abilities as best she can, helping people out wherever and whenever they need it. figuring out how to make her parents love her again.
life philosophy: celebrating every success, no matter how small.
if granted one wish, it would be: to keep her abilities and to control when to siphon body heat.
why? her abilities are part of her and part of her identity; furthermore, she sees the benefits of siphoning body heat in battle, if necessary.
character’s soft spot: family / friends, kids, animals, supers/beings with warmth/fire powers, fellow elemental supers/beings.
is this soft spot obvious to others?: yes. very much so. kids are her absolute biggest soft spot.
greatest strength: her cryokinetic abilities.
greatest vulnerability or weakness: telepaths can get into her head very easily. also, she's loyal to a fault and that can be exploited. she's got mommy and daddy issues and is also very touch starved, both of which can also be exploited.
biggest regret: siphoning her mom's body heat during her pregnancy; siphoning yusef's body heat when she kissed him for the first and last time and sent him to the e.r. with hypothermia.
minor regret: not standing up to her parents as often as she wants to.
character’s darkest secret: when the days are particularly bad, she thinks that her friends should have let her die in that sauna at the wellness and beauty center because she's more trouble than she's worth.
does anyone else know?: no.
𝚐𝚘𝚊𝚕𝚜
drives and motivations: her family / friends.
long term goals: be the best ice skater / ice sculptor she can be. be a part of the stronghold seven. work on bettering herself, wearing gloves until she gets the body heat thing under control and unlearning certain behaviors/patterns/thoughts that her parents taught her.
how the character plans to accomplish these goals: she's keeping up with both of her hobby's and keeps up with her training too. her friends also help a lot.
how other characters will be affected: khione often spars with warren and with will, seeing as his super strength and invulnerability negates the siphoning. furthermore, she's practicing with her friends. tiny little touches here and there.
𝚙𝚊𝚜𝚝
hometown: maxville, usa.
type of childhood: cold.
pets: none.
earliest memory: her dad going into great detail about what would happen to her mom if khione touched her for a prolonged period of time; her mom's detailed description of endured agony.
most important childhood memory: the memory when her dad told her that she siphoned her mom's body heat during her pregnancy and coldly and methodically informed her that she could have killed her mom, that she almost did and what would have happened if khione had actually siphoned all of saraswati's body heat. her mom added to it by describing the agony she'd endured and it cemented the fact that she's dangerous if not kept on a tight leash. the other most important memory is not so much a childhood memory as it is a teenhood memory but it is the day she kissed yusef abbas. her mom was shooting a few episodes for the first season of the fabulous lives of superhero wives and they were helping out at a housing project. yusef and khione grew closer. at first the kiss was nice but then she drew back; his teeth were chattering and his skin was rapidly turning blue; he managed to get out that he was freezing and that this didn't feel good anymore. khione has never screamed as loud as she did that day.
why: those two memories shaped her into the person she is today. from those points on, all of khione's decisions came from a place of: "how do i protect other people from me?" and she's never stopped doing it.
childhood hero: jawaharel patel and doctor farzana nayar. they were her parents' former sidekicks / hero support. she's always referred to them as her aunt and uncle / family members. they truly are the reason she turned out as good and kind and warm as she has because they saw the damage that saraswati and leander were doing and then said: no, over our dead bodies. these two raised khione more than her parents ever did.
dream job: she's always wanted to have her sculptures displayed at one of those ice sculpture festivals.
education: graduated from sky high, is currently enrolled in sky u.
finances: upper class.
𝚙𝚛𝚎𝚜𝚎𝚗𝚝
current location: verse dependent but mostly maxville, usa.
currently living with: technically, she still lives at home with her parents but they are very rarely home due to their jobs - farzana and jawaharel call often and stop by whenever they can but they don't live nearby, so khione basically lives alone.
pets: none.
religion: she's been raised on stories and lore and considers herself a woman of faith but she's still figuring out how to best honor the divine in a way that suits her when she's alone most of the time and most high tide celebrations center around family and community.
occupation: student and future superhero.
finances: upper class.
𝚏𝚊𝚟𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚒𝚝𝚎𝚜
color: red. purple. (light) blue. black. white. pink.
least favorite color: khaki.
music: eclectic. listens to a bunch of artists. most of them are people of color because that's personally important to her.
food: spring rolls.
literature: the snow queen by hans christian andersen. every retelling of stories that feature the snow queen and every retelling that features jack frost. also, her favorite poem is 'fire and ice' by robert frost.
form of entertainment: listening to music, watching movies and tv shows. ice skating and ice sculpting.
mode of transportation: if possible, her powers. if not, then she'll take the bus like everyone else.
𝚑𝚊𝚋𝚒𝚝𝚜
hobbies: watching movies, watching tv shows, listening to music, cooking/baking, ice sculpting, ice skating. sleeping. spending time with her friends and loved ones.
plays a musical instrument? she can sing. but that's about it. she doesn't play any instruments.
plays a sport? khione has been ice skating since she was a kid.
how they would spend a rainy day: catching up on homework she missed out on and prepping for the upcoming week. if that's done, she's either cooking or baking, listening to music or watching a movie or a show. if all of that fails, she's texting or calling her friends. and afterwards, she's taking a nap.
spending habits: aside from spending serious money on her education, khione also spends serious money on her skates and their upkeep. she often eats out too and tends to order from the paper lantern as opposed to other restaurants like the light of india. khione would happily spend most of her money buying gifts and the like for her friends but most of them aren't about it. which she respects. the only time she can splurge for/on her friends is for their birthdays, the holidays and/or friend-valentine's day so that's when she does it. though she does text them about it beforehand so they can tell her exactly what they want. other than that, khione makes sure not to be too reckless with her money.
smokes: no.
drinks: only socially.
other drugs: no. to each their own but khione shudders to think what could possibly go wrong if she's not in complete control of her faculties.
extremely skilled at: ice skating, ice sculpting, wielding her abilities due to excessive training.
extremely unskilled at: standing up to her parents, making choices that benefit her, trusting herself, choosing herself.
usual body posture: good posture. it's been drilled into her by her parents and a remnant from years of ice skating. when she's within a crowd or feeling uncomfortable, she wraps her arms around herself as some sort of 'protection'.
𝚝𝚛𝚊𝚒𝚝𝚜
optimist or pessimist? optimist.
introvert or extrovert? introvert.
daredevil or cautious? cautious.
logical or emotional? emotional.
disorderly and messy or methodical and neat? methodical and neat.
prefers working or relaxing? prefers working.
confident or unsure of themself? unsure.
animal lover? absolutely.
𝚜𝚎𝚕𝚏-𝚙𝚎𝚛𝚌𝚎𝚙𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗
one word the character would use to describe self: tired.
what does the character consider their best personality trait? khione is a hard worker. this goes for academic related things but also for her hobby's.
what does the character consider their worst personality trait? she's very much a people pleaser.
what does the character consider their best physical characteristic? they may be cold but khione likes her hands. sure, they are capable of harming but they are also capable of creating. but if she had to choose, she'd say that she likes her smile.
what does the character consider their worst physical characteristic? the fact that she takes people's body heat whenever she touches them.
how does the character think others perceive them: khione thinks she comes across as an ice princess. she has done her best to lean into that narrative for her. she thinks it will keep others safe from her if they are afraid to engage with her due to getting frozen.
what would the character most like to change about themselves: she would like to be able to hug people without worrying that she's gonna send them to the e.r. or kill them.
𝚛𝚎𝚕𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗𝚜𝚑𝚒𝚙𝚜 𝚠𝚒𝚝𝚑 𝚘𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚜
opinion of other people in general: depends on the person but her opinion is generally high. the world has people like layla and magenta and ethan and zach and will and warren in it. how could it be bad? how could they be bad? they're not. she loves them. khione is very warm hearted. she loves people. loves their potential. loves the good they are capable of doing. she just can't touch them to show that appreciation. (yes, it comes always back to touch with her.) khione would rather focus on people like her friends than people like her parents.
does the character hide their true opinions and emotions from others? khione tries to. she tries very hard. but she's always been a bit of an open book.
person character most hates: gwen grayson.
best friend(s): zoe nunez / @goldshadows, nora grey / @anqael, kamado and ushi higa / @chimugukuru, allie fleur / @loetise, robin rockwell / @lovehoned, andie eliot / @lvebug, elora danan / @blumengeist.

So I've been thinking about Glorfindel's horse recently, okay? (I'm listening to these delightful audio books, and just got to Rivendell.) And I am as ever caught by the inconsistency of Asfaloth's tack with Legolas's later "lol what's a saddle? get rid of that shit man, I'm an elf!" schtick in Rohan. And the question that all of that (plus Gandalf and Shadowfax of course) engenders is why the fuck wasn't Glorfindel "riding elvish style" then?
While the Doylist explanation of "Tolkien hadn't come up with that idea yet + Frodo needed to be able to both hold-onto and steer Asfaloth and he isn't an elf so he had to have a saddle" makes sense, it's obviously not satisfying from an in-universe standpoint, is it?
(And somebody made some extremely good points laying-out a very convincing logistical explanation recently, and I like it quite like a lot, and might well use that in fics myself sometime because it's splendid and seems extremely legit, and opens up some fun things to play around with re: elvish history and culture; but while it's an extremely satisfying answer in terms of Accurate World Building Detail, it's never felt entirely viscerally satisfying to me in terms of Tolkienian Style, if you follow me.)
So I posit: what if the reason why Asfaloth had Conveniently Mortal-Appropriate Tack during that section of story was for the convenience of mortals?
Specifically, the Dúnedain.
What if when the Elves of Rivendell are doing something that involves (or might potentially involve) both horses and their human allies, they put enough tack on their horses to allow one of the Rangers to be able to use that horse in a pinch? That would make sense, right? Just a simple little practical precaution!
Imagine being in a situation where you want to stick one of your human companions on your horse for some reason, or you want one of them to look after your horse for a little while you go off and do a thing, etc etc, but you can't because there aren't any reins. And now you're fucked. What a silly self-inflicted problem that could be avoided with just a little bit of planning ahead!
So, because Glorfindel knew that the Rangers would also be searching around looking for Frodo and/or evidence of the Nine, he put just enough extra tack on Asfaloth that if he, for instance, found an injured mortal in the wild, he could put them on his horse and send them back to Rivendell without him...just as a random example of a hypothetical situation that might happen.
(Anyway, that's the headcanon I'm going to be running with from here out, I think. Also I've gone and retroactively added a little scene revolving around this explanation to my Celebrimbor Fellowship AU fic, for anyone who's been interested in that story.)
*Thoughts and arguments welcome!

Program language and the nuances of Human communication |
I will not apologize, the novelization is good you’re getting a lot more now that I finished re-reading, lol. This time I’m actually writing little analysis pieces instead of sharing photos and screaming, so that a bonus?
Conversational nuance, and the MCP-
There’s a lot here, first and foremost it’s confirmed that it is actually speaking to Dillinger and Flynn through speakers hidden throughout the office and the laser bay. (Both users marvel at how far the voice modulation has come.)
Second is how quickly the MCP is learning, it’s clear that ambition and want drove it into its tyrannical rule. It’s quick, efficient and deadly in capturing other systems and assimilating what it finds useful, but what’s not talked about is how quickly it is learning human quirks and nuance. It’s clear that it is still learning as Flynn manages to best and confuse it in the real world, but the little inflections it’s managed to add to its voice startle him and Dillinger.
This also opens the implication that program communication may lack a lot of things we see as intrinsic to conversation. It’s hard to notice as everything we see on the game grid and in the main computer seem to be regular conversations to us. On some level they are as there is that “user touch” in the world (such as the main programs we see being a reflection of Lora, Alan, Gibbs etc.) but as things go on the difference begins to be more noticeable.
I don’t think Ram is naive or as oblivious as Flynn notes when talking with him- I think he’s just a program. He can’t quite fathom why someone wouldn’t be excited/delighted to talk about their purpose. Not to mention that language is shaped by one’s surroundings- I think different domains may sound different from one another, it’s like the program equivalent of an accent. Same language but differing inflection.
Flynn confuses everyone by using sayings or expressions completely alien to them. Either because such things don’t exist in their world or theirs a similar saying that better fits it (Thank God -> thank the Users | Dumbass-> Bit brain, etc.)
Language? Maybe? Possibly?-
The Headcanon is becoming more popular and I’m a big fan of it- that there’s different languages that sort of correlate to Programing languages. There may be some sort of universal translator or just - again in your common area everyone gets along etc.
This is kind of a thing in canon? I don’t know if it’s an actual language or a reverting back to a more primitive form of communication? As Yori and other programs reduced to automation (basically work zombies) speak in numbers and the occasional word. Yori, though she doesn’t remember much of her time like that retains understanding of it where Tron does not at all.
I’m imagining it’s something close to binary that the bits use. It’s a very basic language that doesn’t need much energy, function or thought to speak. So the working drones can communicate on some level while still being given the lowest possible ration of energy from the MCP. (I can’t stress enough that they’re functioning but not at the same time)
Regardless of what this actually is, legitimate language or confused, energyless mumblings - it does prove that there are some speech not all understand 🤷♀️… in a round about way.

HUMANS OF NIGHT CITY - CASSANDRA MONTEIL.
aka important npcs to v's story, inspired by the official humans of night city posts
⸻
word count: 1k.
tw: abuse, kidnapping, torture, drugs
tldr; cass is v's wealthy corpo ex who betrayed her in a series of fucked up events that resulted in her kidnapping, torturing, and drugging v in order to save her own hide.
⸻
cass is v's ex-girlfriend, a legacy corpo who grew up being trained for the cutthroat, competitive chess board that is life when working for any major corporation. cassandra's parents are high level executives at militech, a position she herself now holds. she meets v when the both of them are in their late teens, in the late 2060s. with the unification war brewing and eventually reaching a peak, cass distances herself from her family, wanting to find her own path and break away from the corporate world she's known her whole life. she disavows corporations entirely and she has dreams of working as a media, focusing on boots-on-the-ground journalism. cassandra begins hanging out around mercs and though she sticks out like a sore thumb, she's charming enough that nobody questions it.
this is how she meets v.
the two of them hit it off after v saves cass's life during a regular shootout in heywood. accepting cass's offer to go out for drinks afterwards is one of v's biggest regrets in life. cassandra falls fast, in love with the idea of v and fascinated by the thrilling, high stakes lifestyle that she lives. v warms up to cassandra slowly, unable to shake the worry that anyone from a family like the monteils can't be trusted. every time her doubts come up, v reminds herself that cass has no contact with her family, and cass always seems to find a way to do something nice for v. she showers her in gifts, in loving affirmations, and she frequently makes little moves that fulfill v's desires for physical touch. before long, v is smitten.
their relationship is an intense one, filled almost entirely with soaring highs — an extended honeymoon phase that seems like it will never end. until cassandra messes with night corp. in her efforts to write a tell-all on the elusive, secretive corporation she finds herself wrapped up in a web of her own making and it's not long until night corp catches onto the fact that she's robbed them of restricted files. the corporation assumes she's done it to report back to militech. suddenly, her big break into journalism could be the destruction of a company that's already in the middle of a war, and should night corp work with arasaka, could mean the permanent end to militech's presence in night city. it would mean the brutal torture and execution of her parents and once night corp caught up to her, it would certainly mean worse for her.
out of options and unsure of what to do, she reaches out to her parents and explains the situation. cass, with the help of her mother, crafts a plan that ensures not just her and her family's survival but establishes her as the hero in the whole situation. she makes v, the unloved streetrat with no family, the fall guy. the story she spins states that v, an up and coming merc, stole from night corp in an attempt to hit the major leagues. cass caught word of it, reported the actions back to militech, who, in a show of good faith and as an olive branch during wartime, sent cass to retrieve the stolen materials from v in whatever manner she thought best. that way, they could be returned where they rightfully belonged.
not a word of her story is true.
cass drugs v, waiting for her to pass out and once she does, she slots a datashard into her that plants false memories so that when v awakens, she makes no attempt to deny what she's done. private solos retrieve v's body, throw her into a trunk of a car, and eventually restrain her in an undisclosed drop point. she comes to and finds herself bound and woozy, face to face with cass's mother who explains that "her daughter simply lied to get close to her". when cass arrives, v expects her to deny this. she never does. cass tells herself that she is doing this for her survival, for the survival of her family, and that, as much as she loved v, v likely would have ended up dead in an alley someday soon anyways. this way, she would be dying so another could live.
cass hands v over to night corp where she is interrogated and tortured for days on end. she never expects to see v again, and she assumes her dead as tensions are smoothed between militech and night corp. in reality, the corrupted data slotted into v's head is discovered by a night corp netrunner, tasked with traversing through v's memories. the data is wiped and soon after, v pieces together the truth of what's happened. in light of new knowledge, night corp strikes a deal with v: if she hacks into militech and wipes the copy of the files militech has surely made, she can walk free. but, if she is discovered in this operation, the corporation will claim v escaped from detainment and is acting of her own free will.
v is never caught. days later, a fire breaks out in cassandra monteil's japantown apartment. the rest of the apartment building remains untouched, but due to "mechanical failure", the sprinklers in the penthouse space are never triggered. all that's left in the apartment is a warning : if i ever see you again, i'll kill you myself.
in the year 2077, cassandra has followed in the footsteps of her parents; the end of her relationship with v denoting the end of her dreams as well. she has turned into everything a younger version of herself swore she would never be, but she excels tremendously as an elite corpo for militech and, because of this, looks back scornfully on her youth, scoffing at the idea that she had ever dared to dream of being something else.
v and cass have yet to directly cross paths again, though the chances are high. despite this, the events of her relationship with cass have left a mental scarring on v that she has never fully healed from. while she is by no means closed off to the idea of love or long-term relationships, she does have some trust issues that she hasn't realized are abnormal. v does not speak of cassandra or discuss the events that led to their separation unless she is extremely close with the individual she is speaking with.
