By chance, do you understand Cardan's relationship with Locke? I hardly see anyone talk about it. Like why is Locke so set on humiliating Cardan? I know he likes stories and wants to see how different people can react in certain situations, but it seems on a more personal level with Cardan, almost as if Locke is trying to get revenge or one-up him. Maybe there's a bit of jealousy? He seems pleased to tell Taryn in The Lost Sisters how he "stole the lover of a prince." (It was something along those lines)

I like the way this is phrased, bc I like to think I DO understand these books, but whether that's true or I'm just delulu addicted to them bc of a past coping mechanism who knows!

Anyway onto the answer. Yes, I think you're correct that it's about Cardan's social status, but also his personality. I don't think he is jealous of him but he likes to push people's buttons and test how far he can go before they snap, and he likes that he is doing it to a prince, a KING, who can't do anything about it. He correctly identified Cardan's need for attention and connection with people and he is exploiting it. Cardan is very short tempered with strangers (rip the wing of that guy from his introduction scene), but with his friends and family he is incredibly lax. This is important because even if Locke likes other people's reactions, the guy is allergic to consequences of his actions and gets personally offended if someone dares to call him out (see Jude almost getting killed for it). Locke enjoys thinking that he is so important to Cardan that he just can't get rid of him, no matter what he does to him. Whenever Locke recounts the tale of the triangle, he conveniently leaves out the part where he intentionally told Cardan about it, then pissed his pants when Cardan didn't react the way he wanted him to, and got his ass whooped. He agreed to marry Taryn only because she proved to him he was allowed to do anything he wanted to her without suffering consequences - naturally, as she was a desperate, titleless mortal and he a rich faerie noble - and that's what killed him.

SO in short. He likes fucking with Cardan because he knows Cardan won't retaliate, and because punching up is more fun than punching down.

Arthur wanted Mathias's Christian name to be either Georg/Jørgen, Niklas/Nicolai, or Mikkel and Mathias picked Mathias partly just to spite him. he didn't actually start using the name until Harald Blue-Tooth made him like, actually genuinely convert.

Mathias's love languages are primarily physical and verbal affection. Arthur's are quality time and acts of service. this can end up causing tension because neither of these idiots knows how to communicate plainly to each other.

Mathias can be pretty intense when he lets himself be, and he's usually a much happier person when he's expressive than when he tries to act cool. Arthur, on the other hand, is repressed as all hell, nevermind that in most relationships his needs are completely opposite Mathias's; Mathias can actually get a bit needy at times, he's intense and can be honestly overwhelming, while Arthur gives little and expects little. it gets extremely frustrating for the two of them at times, especially when they're younger.

during the early middle ages, Arthur is essentially semi-nomadic as it is, and that doesn't change with the Danelaw. the problem here is that as far as Anglo-Saxon law and culture is concerned, Arthur can't actually leave his liege without permission. the result is that whenever he's ready to head to Wessex or Northumbria, he has to ask for permission to leave, not from Mathias but from whoever's king at the time. they occasionally deny his request for political reasons, which means there's a 50/50 chance of consequent Looney-Tunes, mythological trickster tomfoolery as Mathias and Arthur try to trick the king into giving him permission. the other 50 is that Mathias just decides he doesn't give a shit about the king's opinion and they just leave together.

poetic ability was extremely important in Old Norse culture, especially in leaders, so Mathias is by necessity himself a good poet. Arthur's entire family line consists of bards, and his mother especially was a prodigious warrior-poet, and he ends up with fuckin' Shakespeare in later centuries, so you can see where this is going. like if they start a flyting competition or one of them writes the other a poem, they'll get stuck on a self-feeding loop of infinite poetry. they do this in the present day too (well, not the flyting), and Mathias has books' worth of Arthur's poetry.

Arthur is by far the kinkier of the two regardless of time period, but his libido is frequently on the lower end of the spectrum (especially during the early middle ages) due to stress.

as a combination of these factors, Arthur basically has to go out of his way to be louder and more expressive than he usually would be in order for Mathias to be willing to engage in particular kinks because Mathias absolutely needs confirmation that the proceedings are enthusiastically consensual. He is always at Vector's side, almost like some kind of bodyguard, despite him being much weaker then said crocodile.

Vector told him that he had took him in after finding him passed out in the streets, but charmy doesn't remember anything beyond waking up at the crocodile's place someday.

But with nowhere else to go, and nothing to go by, the bee had no choice but to believe vector, and to stay at the crocodile's place learning to become an assassin himself.

Espio always jokes about Charmy being vector's "golden child" because of how much Charmy sucks up to him like a teacher's pet

Charmy hates these jokes, not only does it make him feel look down upon because of his age, but it's not like charmy has a choice to begin with.

The more he listens to vector the better

And the more he sucks up to him the more he's guaranteed food on his plate

Because unlike espio, this isn't just a job for charmy that he can just quite and find another, he's too young to fetch for himself. Charmy needs Vector, he's dependant on him for all his life supplies and more. Even bothering the crocodile can have bad consequences to the bee.

And to those wondering about the past that he doesn't remember, just like the archie charmy anti-charmy was also a prince, and Vector and Espio were sent to kill the king and queen of his hive, and Espio may or may not striked the young bee after he walked in on the murder scene, and was baffled to learn that instead of murdering him immediately Vector wanted to take the kid back to their place, and to both their good luck the bee seemed to have forgotten pretty much everything aside from little things like his name being charmy, and that he was 6.

Family Affairs

I slunked back to Asriel and Toriel's room, feeling ashamed of what I said and did. I couldn't believe I actually went that far just to cut Toriel down, all because of what I heard her do. All the aggression towards Asgore and everyone else, all of her grave misbehavior. I swallowed my pride and went to the boss monsters to apologize. But as I entered the room, little did I know all three boss monsters were crying. They ignored my presence as I stepped inside, trying to get their attention.

"Hey, excuse me." I sheepishly ebbed, trying to get their attention.

Asgore and Asriel said nothing as they looked toward my guilt-ridden face. Toriel was the only one brave enough to face me again, but she looked ready to turn to dust.

"What is it that you want, sir?" She managed, feeling her tears ready to pour down like a waterfall.

"Perhaps you wanted to remind me of how horrible I am as a person? Or maybe you wish to wean this world of me? I will hold still so you may do as you wish. I no longer care how fast it happens."

Oh, fuck. Yep, I crossed the line. I accidentally made Toriel suicidal for a moment. Clearly, I went too far. I had to say something to let her know how remorseful I was of how cruel I was being with her.

"Actually, I came to apologize. Not just to you, Ms. Toriel, but to your son and his majesty, King Asgore. What I said and did was unacceptable, unforgivable, and ultimately, beyond ruthless. And I believe all three of you deserve to know that you all deserve a chance to be happy. Clearly, all I did was make your lives even worse than they already were. And they were all pretty bad to start with. I don't expect you to forgive me, but I DO want you to know that I really am sorry for the way I acted. It was a horrible thing to do, and I genuinely regret it. And it's okay if you despise me now. Never really been my own biggest fan anyway."

Asgore and Asriel were so shocked at how humble I was being, they wiped their tears and faced me as more streamed downward..

"Thank you for your kind words." Asgore humbly bellowed.

"Admin...I never thought you could be so humble." Asriel shamefully admitted.

"Yeah. I know. I...I think Asgore probably wants to say something? Or maybe Toriel?" I requested.

"Thank you. Toriel?" Asgore called.

"Yes, Asgore?" Answered Toriel as she raised her head enough to face the king.

"Yes, it is. Asriel and I have been having incest with each other."

"Yes. I am in love with Asriel. My own son. He...he makes me happy, Asgore. Whenever I'm around him, I just...feel safe and happy and just all around a better person than I really am. Asgore was shocked at what she said. She was just as devastated at the consequences of the past as he was. He couldn't remain scorned. He forgave her.

"Have you really felt like this?"

"Yes, Asgore, I have. Once, Sans had to stop me because it got so bad. Because I became so unfathomably depressed."

"Well, Toriel...all I want is for you to be happy. Listen. If our son makes you happy, then this is the last time I stand between you two, as long as Asriel also wants this."

"Dad, I don't know how to say this without sounding gross, but...I'm in love with mom." Asriel humbly declared.

"She...means the world to me. I can't even think of a single day in which I'm not happy to see her, except for when I was soulless. I love her like Frisk and Chara love each other: completely, and with no regrets. I just...can't be without her anymore. We look into each other, and we see ourselves. I've never...felt this way for anyone before. But I get it if you're dissappointed in me. I am too. With what I did and said, that would be guaranteed at this point."

"Asriel. Listen. All I want for you and Toriel is your happiness. And so, despite my personal views upon this union, for you two, I shall cast them aside."

Asgore and Asriel shared a tear-filled hug, reconciling from before. Truly a turning point for tonight after my serious bombshell.

"Now then...if you two are going to be affectionate in public, your real names cannot be stated, or people will find out what you are doing. That being said, perhaps you two have alternate identities?"

"Actually yes, we do." Toriel said, feeling a little better than before.

"When Asriel and I choose to be intimate in public, he is to be called 'Dante' when I am with him. I, however, have the name 'Phoebe'. We use these names around people who don't know us. "Well, I'm glad we have finally settled this. But, I do have one request for you and Asriel."

"Really? What is it?"

"I want to watch you both just this once as you consummate your relationship."

Toriel blushed at the thought of being watched whie she was having sex with Asriel. As for me, I looked away awkwardly as I kept my mouth shut, too scared to say another word.

"I'm...actually flattered, Asgore. I always wanted to be watched while I have sex. And the fact that it's by someone who knows my body inside and out is simply too much to pass up. So...that will be perfect for me. Asriel?"

"If you really wanna watch...then get ready to see how a REAL man pleases a beautiful woman such as mom." Asriel said, casting aside his self-pitying bout.

"As much as I'd love to watch two or three boss monsters get busy, I'm tired, guys. Think I'm gonna go to bed." I said, leaving the room with a clearer conscience.

I was glad to bring her back from the edge, and I'm happy that she's actually feeling...well, HAPPY, but...I don't think I should be such an asshole to her anymore. If her ice is this thin, then from now on, I better tread carefully, or I'll break it...
