so i have a post on this and how i don't really think that "other avatar" really work all that well, but i do think that sokka and azula would be the most compelling alternate avatars, simply because they both function as dark mirrors to aang in a way that would make the story infinitely more cynical. like sokka as the avatar with azula as a deuteragonist of sorts (the avatar and the firelord, edgelord version) is actually fascinating to me and i have been thinking about that concept specifically, um.... a lot. mostly because katara, still as the narrator, but instead of the object upon whom she has pinned all her hopes and dreams being this fantastical, mythical figure, it is instead her miserable bastard brother, is just an absolutely fascinating character study to me. her one thing, her one claim to specialness, is now wholly undermined by the fact that her brother is literally the most special person on the planet. her role as hero, discoverer of the avatar, teacher of the avatar, best friend of the avatar, narrator and catalyst of this sweeping tale of revolution, is basically just reduced to being "the avatar's little sister." and unlike aang, who is an idealist who wants to save the world out of a vision of hope and beauty, sokka is a cynic who wants to fix the world because he considers it his burden and his duty. he doesn't care who he has to hurt to get his way, and katara isn't powerful enough to stop him, she just has to trust that he'll make the right call every single time, because there is simply no one who can keep him in check (besides his past lives). it's terrifying. avatar sokka is lowkey a horror story.

more specific outline under the cut (in no chronological order; trust me, i tried to move my bullet points around so that they'd flow better, and this stupid fucking website wouldn't let me. whatever):

sokka genuinely hates being the avatar and considers it the greatest curse of his existence. he tries to advertise it as little as possible

nonetheless, word eventually gets out, as sokka develops a reputation for being ruthless, deadly, and unfuckwithable. he uses his reputation to control everything he thinks needs fixing, especially azula and the fire nation

azula watches sokka kill her father without blinking (he simply explodes his heart using waterbending) and immediately decides never to test her loyalty to him as his firelord

katara is rightfully wary of sokka simply accepting azula’s offer to puppet her, but sokka is just like “well azula is ruled by fear. before me her unquestioned loyalty was to ozai, but now that I have killed ozai, I have proven myself to be scarier than him and so she will devote herself to following me.” and katara's just like “um that’s literally sick and twisted????” she understandably doesn’t know how to feel about her brother killing the most powerful man in the world and puppeting his teenage daughter, but, admittedly she also sees the incentive.

eventually and azula and sokka just become actual friends. sokka uses logical proofs and verifiable data points to illustrate to azula why her ideology is dogshit. even though she’s still reasonably terrified him, azula actually gets to grow and learn and heal through her partnership and eventual friendship with sokka

for years azula keeps asking sokka to track down zuko so they can reunite. she’s like “i’ve followed your every order to the letter and all I ask in return is to reunite with my brother” but sokka only remembers zuko from that stretch between the south pole to the north pole where he was trying to hunt him down and capture him, so he is very dismissive of her requests. and azula keeps insisting that if he KNEW zuko he would love him because he’s such a sensitive sweetiepie, but sokka’s like “uhhh im pretty sure he’s a stupid bully” and largely just ignores her. finally he actually grows fond enough of azula to actually honor her request and track zuko and iroh down in ba sing se.

toph and katara are the only members of sokka’s team avatar, but he still knows yue, suki, jeong jeong, and pakku (he never meets bumi or piandao)

he finds toph before he gets to the north pole, so when they go to the north pole together he is basically just carrying her on his back the entire time. she hates it there and can’t wait to leave

azula never gets the chance to claim ba sing se, so iroh and zuko remain there indefinitely, since sokka is still under the impression that it’s a functional city state that requires no intervention until much later down the line

he figures out the presence of the white lotus through frequent communication with yangchen, his favorite past life. yangchen teaches him politics and airbending

he visits yue in the spirit world almost immediately after the war ends. he notes sadly that she seems somewhat terrified of him. she didn’t know that he was the avatar while she was still alive because he thought it best to keep it secret to everyone except those with a dire necessity to be in the know (obviously word has since gotten out)

he learned firebending first, then airbending, then earthbending, then waterbending. it’s in completely the wrong order, which yangchen chastises him for when she teaches him airbending in the spirit world

sokka doesn’t really waterbend much because he’s afraid of encroaching on katara’s domain. as for katara, she absolutely hates that the one thing that made her special in a way that sokka wasn’t is actually not even that impressive now and she HATES that the mystical figure she has been searching for her entire fucking life is HIM and she HATES that it’s not her WHY ISN'T IT HER…

she also hates that sokka lied to her about it for their entire childhoods because she assumes it was his patronizing way of sparing her feelings, even though he doesn’t think that being the avatar is anything remotely good, and only hid it from her because he was scared and ashamed. and he knows that eventually there will be a reckoning (in the form of somehow being a better firebender than zuko despite being completely untrained) but in the meantime he just wants katara to think he’s Normal

so at first he feels weird about waterbending because he sees that as katara’s “thing,” but eventually he starts doing shit with waterbending that katara literally can’t, and so (in his mind) it’s fair again. like he starts isolating individual atoms in H2O molecules to make H2O2 and shit, and katara’s just like "HOW ARE YOU DOING THAT." but then he starts bloodbending (he bloodbends azula, for example) and katara is like nvm i'm glad i’m a normie :)

he never meets hama but develops his own mode of bloodbending, he invents metalbending independently as a way to break free from handcuffs, and he develops all kinds of other niche sub-bending categories as well

sokka’s firebending is like azula’s on crack. he just shoots a tiny bit of fire out of his fingertips like a gun and hits someone right in their neck and they double over in pain and boom he’s won.

he starts off not really knowing any earthbending because he doesn’t exactly have earth at home, but then once he meets toph, he realizes the potential of the element and gets really obsessed with expanding that potential as much as possible

and air is his worst element. because it’s the element of freedom.

he has to reveal to jet that he’s the avatar because he accuses him of being a firebender. jet doesn’t believe him at first, but then he sees him go into the avatar state to hold back the water from the dam for long enough for the whole town to evacuate

when he first calls the kyoshi warriors a bunch of girls, kyoshi herself screams at him for like an hour. lesson learned.

he reunites with hakoda only after the war ends, at azula’s coronation. hakoda learns that he’s the avatar once ozai is already long dead. hakoda doesn’t recognize him at first, and instead assumes that he’s somehow kya’s long lost son that she had with a fire nation noble. he then immediately realizes how stupid that is, but is still completely shocked by the revelation of who sokka has become and what he even is.

katara goes back to the south pole to be with her family, but sokka stays in the fire nation to oversee azula, with toph at his side. when toph asks him if he doesn’t also miss his family, sokka very matter of factly states that as the avatar, what he wants doesn’t matter. he’s not a person with desires, but rather a servant of the world, a vessel through which peace can be achieved.

azula is a very good firelord. she is also unwaveringly loyal to sokka and will do anything to achieve his vision. sokka basically replaces ozai in her mind. but with more banter between them

she asks sokka if they can’t retrieve iroh and zuko from ba sing se, but sokka doesn’t really think that having more evil family around will be a good influence on her. he goes to ba sing se to scope out the situation for himself, and decides that they’re pretty much harmless, but that if azula wishes to see them, they must meet in a third, neutral location

zuko finally learns that sokka kills ozai, and is so enraged that he tries to fight sokka. it goes very poorly, but out of some faint fondness for azula, sokka doesn’t hurt him. iroh just expresses his gratitude and appreciation (on both accounts).

despite azula being their ostensible ally, katara cannot fucking stand her. the feeling is mutual

sokka and toph, however, get along fairly well with her, and mai and ty lee also (mai doesn't understand why the avatar enjoys her presence so much, but she doesn't take it for granted either)

a couple years after the war, sokka starts taking an interest in more global politics, widening his focus from simply the fire nation. he goes home for the first time, revisits the north, and starts to tour the earth kingdom in earnest. that is when he starts to learn of and work to dismantle the police state of ba sing se and other unjustly hierarchized social systems, such as in the north pole. the nwt in particular is a sore spot for him due to his relationship with yue.

sokka uses spies from within the white lotus to keep tabs on the white lotus so as not to repeat the platinum affair, which yangchen warned him about. eventually he stops trusting his own spies and sends toph in there instead.

sokka also develops a very tender affection for kuruk, who reminds him of hakoda and who is the only person who can even somewhat get through to him regarding sokka’s somewhat toxic, self-dehumanizing ideal of what and who he should be. he thinks kyoshi is sweet and admires her ruthlessness and similar approach to the self (as a vessel rather than a person). he dislikes roku and thinks he has no redeeming qualities, and tells him as much the first time they ever talk. he talks to aang sometimes, but seeking advice from a kid who was captured by firelord azulon and died in prison (yes) always hurts his heart.

he feels a responsibility to the entire world and claims that he must remain impartial in all matters, but he would still lay down his life for katara (or toph) if it came down to it. that childhood conditioning doesn’t go away, it just gets worse as his responsibilities grow.

in conclusion: avatar sokka is sooo sick & twisted that i can actually kind of justify it as a compelling AU. like, aang's role in it is somehow even more tragic, because this narrative would necessarily dial the cynicism up to 11. sokka and azula as the avatar and the firelord duo in question would be absolutely miserable, just as katara's narratorial status being undermined at every turn would be miserable, just as an aangless world would be miserable. and guess what. i <3 misery

it seems like opinions on laios are the most divisive among the canon characters, so what would your dungeon meshis think about him?

beryl would think hes a little dense but his knowledge on monsters is so unparalleled and extensive he just considers him a proper zoologist and peer. beryl doesnt have any interest in monsters but monsters are summoned/created by magic so its kind of like a sister field of study. and beryl is also an eccentric guy, i think his biggest problem with laios would be lacking manners in formal situations.

fry would like him. hes handsome. fry has a basic understanding of monsters and their biology cause theres lots of monster parts that are used in alchemy so he would ask laios a single question and listen to him ramble about something for 30 minutes uninterrupted. smiles

sloane would think hes kind of weird if caught in his element or drooling over monster food but hes obviously a good leader and takes care of his people so shes not like, disturbed by his taboo interests. as long as hes not hurting anybody. hes a good kid

billy would be a little weirded out only if he directed his attention at them (being a beast-kin, thinking of how he interacts with izutsumi) but he respected izus boundaries for the most part, and billy can talk about their life as a were-rat its not like they dont love being one, i think its just UNUSUAL that they receive any kind of interest in that. also theyre no better about social situations i think they would consider him an okay dude. probably still make fun of him like they do with everyone else. and billy would be blown away that theres more monsters you can eat other than walking mushrooms. they would want to try more

Reccer says: One of my all time faves. Nonwal’s gorgeous prose and characterization of these 4 is always top notch, but the dialogue?! The spy vs. spy mind games? The poetic descriptions of longing and grief? The visceral feeling of constant low-level panic punctuated by a full panic attack and maybe developing a crush on your current crush’s evil exes? The DIALOGUE (again)?!?! Absolutely stunning. Side note: chapter 4 features the best Jester dialogue I have ever read. The tag “openly declaring your mutual distrust can be a love language if you do it right” says so much and I love it.

Happily Ever Laughter by Settiai (1288, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: Veth’s alcoholism is brought up a few times but isn’t the focus.

Adorable Essek/Caleb/Veth/Yeza slice of life fic. Polyamory is not nearly as difficult as trying to teach a hyperactive 6 year old magic can be.

Reccer says: Incredibly sweet little domestic fic. The rapport between them is so soft and gentle and well-worn like the most comfortable pair of old house slippers. The moments where Yeza and Caleb glance at each other and manage to communicate in absolute silence (in that pseudo-telepathic way that some real parenting couples often do) are just so perfect, and Veth still finding Essek somewhat aggravating even while she loves him is :chefskiss: delightful.

Reccer says: It’s both hot as hell AND feelsy! It’s a really interesting take on Caleb & Essek’s relationship. Honestly I recommend the entire series.

The way it manages to feel like an outsider POV reinforces the sense of missing time, of having missed a massive change, and the softness and warmth of everyone’s love for each other is palpable throughout even in the most tense and anxious of moments.

In light of that wonderful expo, which gave us so much TGC content, can I just say that Aegon's "I've done everything you ask me to... and I try so... I try so hard, but it will never be enough" line would've hit harder (TGC's acting was so fucking good tho) if hotd would bother to show us scenes (just flashbacks, literally anything) of a young Aegon doing anything, from his studies to his training and showing off his talents/knowledge by trying to interact with Viserys and doing anything to get his attention but seeing/realizing that Viserys was never interested in him no matter what which would kick off his spiral to alcoholism and the frequent ventures to flea bottom (and finally see his book traits of being a sullen boy) and eventually becoming lazy. Instead, they included some dumb af scenes that serve no purpose other than shock factor or trying so hard to be got. They were so allergic to giving/having sympathetic scenes for the greens that some even hated the idea of Aemond being bullied instead of being the bully. Like, I laughed at the praise the show gets when it clearly suffers from so much "telling everything to the audience" instead of letting the audience come to a conclusion by describing the events and actions. BUT, then again, seeing as most of the reaction to Alicent being maritally raped, Aemond being bullied, Aemond claiming Vhagar (and literally losing an eye), and Alicent snapping in Driftmark was clearly so different, never mind lmao. But, that's just my opinion lmao. Sorry for the rant, I've been thinking about it lately but do get ready, just in case some get pissed at this lmao.

Feel you! I even had a big post on this topic - here. I won't repeat myself, but yes - there's a huge problem in the series with describing things instead of showing them. If we talk about Aegon - literally everything we know about him - we know from his words or the words of other people, and this is very annoying, especially considering the difference between what others say about him and how we see Aegon on the screen. Tom plays a depressed alcoholic with mommy issues, who makes vulgar jokes and has some dildos on the bedside table. This is his maximum. We're even shown his disgust at the sight of cruelty - I wrote about it here. However, other characters describe him as a rapist prone to sadism. What? Who wrote this script? I think about it quite often and I get terribly angry every time. Aegon was an amazing character in the book - interesting, dramatic, but in the series all the positive qualities were taken away from him, even in those scenes that we see - like the fact that he wants to escape, while in the book he agreed to accept the crown to protect his family. It's all incredibly frustrating.

did you watch the new episode of the amazing digital circus. If so did you enjoy it?

I DID and I really loved it. I love the way Goose wrote the episode. The character dialogue was so entertaining, and each line told a lot about who they are as people as well as how they navigate the world. The main gang feel so real, I love it sm. I also adored the world exploration this episode. I was excited by the idea of us exploring the candy map of this game, but the fact that we ventured into the unseen areas of the game's programming was so fun. I have to say that my favorite part of it was probably Pomni and Gummigoo's bonding moment.

I feel like up until now because of how little we have of this series we knew little to nothing about Pomni. All we had to work off of was that she seemed neurotic, anxious, but she showed signs of being caring. Now that we got a glimpse of how she was after settling in I like her even more as a character. She's sassy!! She's frank!! And she's very empathetic, which I love.

Another character I found really interesting this episode is Jax (you can groan it's okay DEJEYF). Although I want to emphasize the word interesting. I don't love him honestly ( don't look at my pfp, his design is just v aesthetically silly to me). He's the definition of insufferable asshole who I'd probably punch in the nose on sight, but that's what's intriguing about him to me. He's needlessly cruel for seemingly no reason, even going as far as wanting to massacre people for the sake of entertainment. I'm going to be so real here cuz I know someone's gonna call me out- but yes, if he was a woman I'd probably love the murderous desire.

Jokes aside though, there is something...very wrong with him. You could make the excuse of "oh well he wants to kill NPCs and they aren't real" but I still think that's incredibly concerning regardless. Wanting to go out of your way to inflict harm on people is very... I'm not even sure what to call that. It has me curious about him though. Makes me wanna pop his head open and dig my hands into his brain to see what wires got crossed in there. While I may dislike him as a person, I love him as a character and I can't wait to see why he's so awful.

Lastly I wanna say I really love Goose's writing style. I wanna study it and break down how she goes about creating a narrative. I still have yet to watch all of her Youtube videos. I still need to do that.

Opening the door, the small firelight of the mansion paints the living room golden. It's the only light in the house.

You look around to find the place incredibly tidy. The only thing amiss is the two corpses, that lay bloodily on the dining table. The sight makes your breath catch in your throat, but you've admittedly seen much worse with Barbara Kean as your mother. These two must be the actual owners of the mansion. Or used to be, anyways.

You glance at Mr. Tetch in mock disapproval, and he clicks his tongue with a tsk.

"You must forgive me, I wasn't expecting visitors." He turns his nose up at you, voice coming out indignant. His eyes are still wide at your unannounced presence.

"...My bad." You huff, staring at him.

Silence overtakes the room, you two staring at each other for an uncomfortable amount of time. His eyes scan you over, landing on the wound on your waist. You don't miss the gesture.

"You shot me." You say, blunt.

"Yes," He hisses. "You're supposed to be dead."

"Should've shot me in the head, then." At this he lets out a very dry, humorless chuckle.

"Pity. I should've. I apologize, I was caught up in the moment."

You send him an unamused look.

Scanning over his face, you see cuts of his own decorate his cheek. He must've taken a blow while you were comatose. Either a scrap to get away from Jim, or the two home owners had put up a fight before he hypnotized them.

"You're hurt." You say, taking a note of how the dry blood sticks to his cheekbones.

He looks inquisitively at you. You're the one shot. You're the one who should be in the hospital.

You sigh at his puzzled complexion.

"What exactly are you doing here?" He drawls, slowly. "Revenge? For Mr. Gordon? For you?" He scoffs, ignoring your look of discontentment.

On Mr. Gordon, actually. You think. You don't say that just yet. That would probably make Mr. Tetch happy. He still shot you. You're kind of enjoying his disgruntled mood at your appearance.

"No." Is all you say, simply. "I just have a lot of questions."

Mr. Tetch raises an eyebrow at this, cocking his head. Good. You've piqued his interest. Before he gets the chance to ask what type of questions, you interrupt him.

"We can talk about it while I clean your cuts. That looks nasty." You say, nodding to his face. He looks equally frustrated and surprised at your words, hesitant. He purses his lips. "Relax. I'm not going to try to kill you. That's more your style, apparently."

He huffs at the dig.

"What did you have in mind?" He asks, curtly. You grin. You dig out of your pocket a bottle of painkillers given to by Selina. His eyes widen.

"Do you know if this place has any gauze or band-aids?"

He narrows his eyes, and turns on his heel without a word. You follow him to the bathroom.

He sits on the edge of the bathtub while you stand. His gaze never strays from you.

You're reminded of Lee digging through the bathroom mirror while you do the same. You managed to find some cotton balls, rubbing alcohol, and band-aids.

Looking over at him, you assess the situation. His top hat is askew, with bruises and small injuries decorating his face and neck. God knows how many he actually has, under his clothes.

"Death by a thousand cuts, huh?" You muse. He blinks at you, offering a scoff. "Take off your shirt."

"I beg your pardon?" You watch the blood drain from his face. It's satisfying.

"I'm assuming you have more injuries on your chest as well. Take off your shirt. And turn on the bath faucet."

A moment of stunned silence, before he leans over to run the water. You hold in a laugh as he awkwardly bends on the edge of the tub, long and tall limbs slowly peeling away his clothing. Soon enough, you're shut up yourself.

You swallow as he unbuttons his suit jacket, averting his gaze from yours. You take in his shirtless form with a breath. It feels like something out of a shitty romcom.

He stays silent, effectively embarrassed. You don't blame him. You wonder if he thinks you're purposefully trying to humiliate him. Not that he has anything to be humiliated for. He's gorgeous.

He notices you staring, and squints his eyes. Great. He probably thinks you're some perv now. The humor in the thought makes you involuntarily smile.

"Are you enjoying this?" He asks, sarcastically, through gritted teeth. You kneel in front of him and he goes silent. You can hear the small gasp he lets out and full-body shudder when you bury yourself in-between his legs to get a better angle. It's certainly more...intimate then you thought it would be.

Ignoring his words, you take a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol. You place it to one of his cuts, and watch him let out a loud hiss of pain.

"I enjoyed that." You grin up at him, referencing his reaction. He scowls at you.

The room is peculiarly comfortably silent, save for his low groans of pain he attempts to muffle at the stinging.

"You know, I've actually never done this before."

His gaze hardens.

"What?"

"I've never done this before. Not first hand. But I used to watch my mom do this to my dad all the time when he'd come home."

Jervis casts his eyes upwards as you stand up. Dark eyes follow your movements, looking up at you as you cradle his face to steady him. You softly wipe the dry blood away. This is as close as you've ever been to him. You think it's the first time you've touched him, too. It's not entirely unpleasant.

"Why are you here?" He whispers, keeping eye contact with you. His voice is so quiet, almost as though he struggles to get the words out, not being able to focus on anything but the feeling of your hand on his cheek.

You sigh. You knew you'd have to answer the question eventually.

"Same as you, really." You bite your lip, and his gaze flits. "I want revenge on Jim Gordon." You say your dads name quietly, but with no less venom.

Jervis furrows his brows. You'll have to elaborate.

"He chose Lee over me. Purposefully, I'm sure." You say, a bit bitterly, and a bit sadly. You notice how Mr. Tetch's eyes soften at your tone of voice. "He knew what he was doing."

"And you expect me to help? How so?" The corners of his mouth twitch.

"You," Here goes nothing, "You are going to teach me how to hypnotize people."

His expression doesn't change for a moment, before his lips part. For a moment you think he might laugh in your face, and then hypnotize you to go kill yourself. But he stays startingly silent, if not amused by the request.

"I assume you learned hypnotism somehow. So, it can probably be taught, yeah?" You ask. You finished cleaning his cuts a minute ago. You're unsure why you're still standing so close to him. "So, I propose, we form an alliance, of sorts. You want revenge, I do too."

"I could easily accomplish that my own accord." He speaks, glint in his eyes.

"Maybe. But I know everything there is to know about Jim Gordon. I know how to hurt him."

Mr. Tetch stays silent, before sucking his teeth. He seems to mull over his options.

"Hm. Alright." He hums, and your eyes widen. You really weren't expecting him to agree. "On one condition."

And there is it. The bargain. You'll take it though. It's better then him hypnotizing you into helping him after hearing your idea.

"You, young one, will owe me a favor. A favor that I can call upon at any time."

"What kind of favor?" You breath, hesitant. He smirks, and it's strangely comforting to see his charisma and showmanship slowly return.

"Oh, nothing too demanding, I assure you. Just a small service, whenever I see fit. Think of it as a... mutually beneficial arrangement."

You offer him a small grimace, but take the offer regardless. One favor couldn't hurt. No price can be put on revenge, it seems. You're mother taught you that.

You finish running the water, while his stare remains locked on you. Still sitting cross legged on the edge of the bath, he never yields in his gaze. He catches when you wince again in pain, from the shot.

"Do you trust me?" He asks, quirking his head.

You look back at him, eyebrow raised.

"...Why?"

"Can you hear the dripping of the faucet?"

You can...Aw, fuck.

Instantly, you're zoned out. Yeah, Selina was right. This was a horrible idea. But why go through the trouble of asking for a favor? For hearing him out?

"Do you hear how it synchronizes with your heartbeat?"

Beside yourself, you nod. He flashes a wolfish grin.

"Wonderful," He praises. "Your bullet wound won't bother you anymore. The pain is nothing more than an illusion. If anything, it's a mild annoyance."

When he wakes you up out of your trance, you smile at each other.

Life as a JGY stan is so hard because sometimes I want to make posts about the ways his very justified paranoia turns against him sometimes, rare moments where I think being more trusting or vulnerable would have helped but he felt like it couldnt, or talk about how his brutal survival instinct intersects with society's existing bigotries in a such a way that most of his violence is actually aimed at people lower on the ladder than him, with people like Jin Guangshan being the exception not the rule. Because he's a fascinating character and these parts of him are interesting!

But when I do that I have to live in perpetual fear of the moment that it escapes its target audience and someone takes it to go "Yeah he's a monster who fucked over everyone and is incapable of love! I wish he was killed earlier and his death was a thousand times more painful 🤪"

I mean, take my last example. Due to existing hierarchies it is, at any point, easier and safer for jgy to harm people less powerful than him instead of more powerful than him, even if the more powerful are the ones threatening his safety in the first place. Even knowing how it harms him and while working against it, Jin Guangyao is not immune to internalizing the mindset of the world he lives in. Even when killing Jin Guangshan- one man- it ends up costing the lives of 20 sex workers. You think I can bring up the sex workers in this fucking fandom? You think that will go over peacefully? The well has been so thoroughly poisoned here it feels like any conversation around morality automatically turns into a courtroom to determine a sentence for this fictional fucking character who's already dead.

the nature of being a johnny lawrence fan, is that it is often indistinguishable from being a johnny lawrence hater, and I don't think I have that with any other character. usually I'm very protective of my faves (including in cobra kai, daniel, sam, kreese, and tsilver), but johnny, I very much enjoy reading all the reasons people dislike his character, nodding along like "yeah what an inconsistent mess, you're so right, carmen pls u deserve better narrative to work with, terry silver was telling the truth when he mocked his fatherhood abilities, but alas the writing will never support it"

suggestion do you have... any wants? like obviously you do but like? suggestion my guy my ourple boy. both the easiest and hardest to write. you need a skill to say something to move conversation along but it doesn't fit any skill in particular? about 80% of the time you can have suggestion say it and it will make sense. but like actually characterizing him... how do i define you dude... what makes your character tick... urgh. i dont get you yet. im trying to understand but you are difficult.

I love looking too deeply into things that were clearly meant to be jokes and not serious in any shape or form. Today on the list: Kian’s relationship with Donna. Under the cut to avoid filling people’s feeds

Now I think most people will agree that Kian’s relationship with his own parents probably wasn’t great. I mean I’m just saying if my parents didn’t give me a last name I probably would just assume they didn’t want me or something. It’s one thing to support your child if they want to change their name but it’s a whole different thing to not even give them the choice to keep the name you gave them.

Now this plays pretty interestingly with Donna considering the fact that she’s without a doubt the best parent we see in the campaign. And we don’t know exactly how old Kian was when he and the others became friends, my personal headcanon is like 12-13, but if you have a child and they make a new friend who’s parents are probably known to be in a cult and also hippies and also didn’t bother naming their child? I’d grab that child so fucking fast and try to treat them as my own. Show them some love and support they wouldn’t get from their own parents.

And so like I find it extremely reasonable to assume that when they were younger Donna probably would have been very caring towards Kian (and obviously Rolan as well but this post isn’t about him). And I find it pretty reasonable to assume that if Kian’s parents were neglectful he would probably have just clung onto that care from an adult because he just needed some fucking paternal support.

But the thing is. I find it very easy to headcanon Kian with some major abandoment issues that honestly even rival Rand’s. Because I mean Rolan left them, Becky left him and he waited for her for fifteen fucking years, we can assume Rand wasn’t exactly emotionally available because he had his own issues (can’t really blame him for that but still), his parents were probably shit, and judging by the fact that Kian is very clearly a huge romantic who literally waited for his high school girlfriend for fifteen years, and yet in his introduction it’s made extremely clear that he doesn’t seem to do like serious relationships anymore? My guess would be that he had a lot failed relationships in his like early twenties and when none of them worked out he eventually just gave up and settled for one night stands.

Now this works alongside something else that is of course very notable about Kian: his looks. Like we don’t know their stats exactly I don’t think but he is canonically extremely attractive and probably has his highest characteristic in appearance. Because he’s a grizzly character. Of course he does (/lh).

But I find it very reasonable to assume that if someone had pretty bad abandonment issues and was extremely attractive and aware of that, it would become very easy for them to assume that people could only want them or care about them for their looks. And if we assume that, we can probably also assume that they would heavily lean into that and use their looks to get even some kind of affection and care from others even if it’s extremely surface level.

And bringing this back to Donna: if we assume that all my reachings in this post are correct (they are not, i am looking too deep into things because it is my favorite hobby) then it really just puts Kian’s relationship with Donna into an entirely new and way sadder light. Because suddenly it’s not just an extremely flirty person flirting with his friend’s mom for fun, but instead someone who’s been lacking any kind of paternal affection for his entire life trying to make himself sexually appealing to the one person he might have received it from because at least that way she’d care for him on some level.

And the thing is I don’t know if Kian would even be like… aware that’s what he’s doing. Or if he’d really just removed any possibility for platonic or familial love from his own life that he couldn’t even recognise that that’s what he really wants.

And maybe it’s even worse that it works. That Donna is attracted to him. That he can get that affection and love from her, someone who probably knew him as a kid, who might have practically raised him, and wouldn’t that just make him even more sure that he’s right? That the only way anyone could ever truly love and care for him is if he makes himself sexually appealing to them?

(Sorry for long post. I am. Thinking about him every second of every minute of every hour of every day of every week of every month of every-)
