The Siege of Winchester - Sigtryggr x Stiorra (Part 1)

*Set during the time frame of Sigtryggr’s taking of Winchester and meeting Stiorra during her captivity.

Stiorra knew as soon as she was taken from her father, she would need to conceal her identity. She loved her father. She learned so much from him, but he was known as the Dane-Slayer. And she would soon find herself held captive by a bunch of Danes. She needed to buy herself some time until her father and his men could save her and Winchester.

Lady Aelswith prayed next to her, Stiorra rolled her eyes. Her fingers wrapped around her necklace thinking of her plan. All she knew at this moment in time was the fact she was headed to Winchester that had been taken under siege by a Dane named Sigtryggr.

Apparently he was young, cunning, and had a plan to rule all Danes. But he would have to win first. He may have taken Winchester, but he had yet to fight against her father and his men. He would never allow Winchester to be taken from the Saxons.

Upon arriving just outside the gates, Stiorra took in the sight of what used to be her home. Spikes with the heads of Saxon’s was the first thing she noticed. Along with the new additions of runes and an altar.

At least she would be among her people, she thought.

“I get to Winchester at last,” she mumbled.

“Do not look upon it,” Lady Aelswith said. “It is not the place I left. Be under no illusion. They will murder us. So, I suggest you say your prayers and thank the lord for the lives you lead.”

Stiorra scoffed, “I will not. I am not a Christian.”

The cart stopped in front of the palace. Lady Aelswith, Stiorra, and Athelstan are pulled off and taken inside. Stiorra noticed a woman sitting in the large chair next to a young man. His brown hair was long and he wore black, woven armor with Thor’s hammer around his neck.

“Lady Aelswith,” Brida smiled. “I am so happy to see your family reunited.”

“I want to speak with whoever leads you,” the Queen responded.

“I lead here,” Brida answered.

“I mean, the man in charge of this,” Lady Aelswith rephrased.

Brida chuckled before spitting on the Queen, “Do not insult me.”

“I am not the one using insults,” Lady Aelswith said.

Stiorra turned her gaze to the woman Lady Aelswith spoke with. She seemed familiar. Brida. She remembered Haesten mentioning a woman named Brida joining alongside Sigtryggr. Brida. She knew that name. It was the woman from her father’s past. She had been taken from England and they grew up with Ragnar and the Danes. Brida never forgot the things my father has done for the Saxons and to the Danes.

“Have her servant girl feed her shit,” Brida snapped.

Stiorra glanced up. She was no longer lost in her thoughts. Brida believed her to be a servant girl. Good.

“Torture me by all means,” Lady Aelswith said. “But you must know she and the boy are both Danes. They were taken, as slaves, after our victory at Tettanhall. If you value your people, take them back.”

Stiorra felt a gaze on her. The man sat behind Brida. She assumed him to be Sigtryggr. The Dane who captured Winchester. Brida breaks Stiorra’s eye contact with him, as she stands in front of her.

“Who is Sjorn?” Brida asked.

“She is half Dane at most,” Brida declared. “The monk boy not at all.”

“Half dane is enough,” Sigtryggr said. “Hold the woman separately.”

“She’s Uhtred’s daughter. I recognize her” a voice calls out. “We met in Mercia when my sister betrayed me.”

“I’ve never seen you before!” Stiorra shouted.

Brida looked her up and down, “Of course, she has his look. And she is cunning like him.”

Stiorra glared at Brida.

“Find Uhtred. Send him her head,” Brida ordered.

“NO!” Lady Aelswith shouted, reaching towards Stiorra

“Do it. It will bring him. It will bring them all and the end will begin,” Brida said, walking over to the queen.

“What? I thought you welcomed the fire,” she whispered, her face inches from Lady Aelswith.

Sigtryggr got up from his seat, walking towards the captives. “Put the Queen and the others back where they keep their dead king. She comes with me.”

Stiorra grunted when a guard took her by the neck, spinning her on her heels, and forcing her to the room. Sigtryggr followed behind them.

Stiorra is thrown into a large room. It was Alfred's library. There’s a long table filled with books and the sunlight shone in through the window. The door was slammed shut and locked behind her. She headed straight for the window, looking for an escape. There’s no way she’d be able to get free without breaking the glass. That would draw too much attention. She stopped on the floor, listening for any sign of a hidden passageway.

She sighed defeated realizing there was no way out. She sat at the table, staring at the glass in front of her. She didn’t know what Sigtryggr wanted with her, but it couldn’t be good. The door opened up behind her and she felt the presence of someone. Instinctively, she slammed the glass against the table, shattering it. Stiorra held the broken glass against her cheek, ready to slice it into her flesh.

“Do not,” a husky voice whispered.

Stiorra’s hand shook as she held the glass closer to her face, her breathing growing heavier.

Sigtryggr stood in front of her, holding his hands up as he looked at her, “I will not harm you. Do not. I only wish to speak with you. Answer me truthfully and I will treat you kindly.”

“I’ve heard of men’s kindness and I do not want it,” Stiorra spat her grip tightening onto the glass.

“I’m the Dane who took Winchester,” Sigtryggr said. “If I wanted to hump a woman, I would not need to use force.”

Stiorra looked at Sigtryggr. She shouldn’t trust him. He was looking to kill her father. He was a man and didn’t all men wish to show their power against a woman. Especially one they were holding against her will. But looking into his eyes, she could feel he was different. He was someone she could trust. Lowering the glass from her cheek, Sigtryggr takes it out of her hand and places it on the table.

“Who was your mother?” He asked.

“Gisela, sister of Guthred of Northumbria,” she answered.

“Oh, so we share the same ancestors,” he noted.

“Yet we are not the same,” Stiorra said.

“And where is your home?” Sigtryggr asked.

“Bebbanburg,” she responded.

“A young woman with lands in the north,” he said, amused.

“Our lands were stolen, but my father will see them restored,” she said.

Sigtryggr watched her from afar. She had her back turned to him, refusing to face him. He was intrigued by her. Not just because she was the Dane-Slayer’s daughter or that she was both a Dane and a Saxon. No, there was something else. Something more. Something he would not admit to himself, not yet.

“Hm, so, are you one of us, or one of them?” he asked.

“I’m both! As are many living here, two generations, three. This foolishness of who is Saxon and who is Dane!,” Stiorra said.

“When one side seeks to destroy the other, you must choose to survive,” Sigtryggr told her.

“Well, I refuse. It’s a game for old men,” Stiorra shook her head. “I won’t be held to the feuds from years ago. I have no fight with either side and I will not choose. It would dishonor either my father or my mother.”

Sigtryggr smiled, “Well, then, I would say this love for honor makes you a Dane. The Saxon cares only for the obedience of their God.”

Stiorra rolled her eyes, “Then you know nothing of Saxons. They treasure honor just as much as you do.”

“Yet they say their God is the god of peace,” he smirked.

“Do you also believe them when they say their God came back from the dead?” Stiorra asked.

Sigtryggr laughed. Getting up from his spot across the room, he walked closer towards her. He took a seat next to her, but still far enough away to keep his distance.

“Do you think there could be peace between Saxon and Dane?” he asked, “They are new to me. I wish to understand their ways.”

“Many would like there to be,” she said.

Sigtryggr nodded. He found himself willing her to look at him, but her face remained stoic and straight.

“Tell me about your father, Uhtred,” he said. “Why does he hate us?”

“He doesn’t,” she responded, quickly, spinning her ring around her finger.

“Then why does he kill so many of my kin?” he asked. “Why does he revel in his title Dane-Slayer?”

Stiorra shook her head, “He doesn’t. He hates it,” she said. “You speak like a man who’s never killed.”

Sigtryggr’s lips curl into a smile, “Oh, I have killed, but only Christians. I would never betray my people.”

“He’s never betrayed anyone,” she said, looking at him. “He was often torn between those who loved him like their own and those who were his blood.”

Sigtryggr held her gaze.

“My mother was a Dane and he loved her,” she continued. “If Uhtred were intent on destroying the Danes, to clean us from the land, why am I here to speak of it?”

Sigtryggr sat outside on the palace walls, looking out into the city of Winchester while sipping ale. He still couldn’t believe the Gods had favored him enough to siege this town. How so many Danes before him tried and failed, yet he was able to make it happen. But perhaps the Gods had a new fate for him now, one that began here.

Stiorra.

He had been with women before. That was nothing new. But being around her. Smelling her scent and hearing about her thoughts, her life. It felt different. He never planned for a wife believing it made one weak. A wife brought children, which brought collateral. Pieces of a puzzle to allow enemies to bargain with. He still didn’t wish for a wife, but he also could not imagine leaving Winchester without Stiorra. And he only just met her.

“There you are,” one of Sigtryggr’s men said from behind.

“Ah, Harald,” Sigtryggar held out his ale cup. “Is there something I am needed for?”

“Not at the moment,” Harald answered. “But, the men and I… we wondered…”

“Yes?” Sigtryggr asked.

“What is your plan for the Dane-Slayer’s daughter?” he asked.

Sigtryggr’s hands turned white around the ale cup, “Why do you need to know?”

Harald sighed, “It is Brida. She is determined that the only way to get Uhtred here is by telling him we have his daughter. She wants her head.”

“She can want it all she wants,” Sigtryggr said. “But she will not have it”

Harald looked at him, “What is she your whore now? Your little hump thing? Is that why we can’t send her head to the Dane-Slayer?”

Sigtryggr threw his cup down, spilling the remaining ale on the ground. He grabbed Harald by his armor, lifting him up off the ground.

“What did you call her?” He spat. “Don’t you ever talk about her in that way again?”

Harald looked down at him, his eyes widened.

“And tell Brida to keep her mouth shut. I run this city now and we do things my way,” Sigtryggr glared. “Do you understand?”

“Y-yes, Sigtryggr,” Harald shook in his grasp.

The redness that took over Sigtryggr lessened as he realized what he was doing. His hands release Harald in a flash.

“You may go,” Sigtyrggr waved his hand, sending Harald on his way.

Sigtryggr’s chest began to tighten as his heart began to race. He leaned against the banister, his fingers gripping the stone below. His breathing quickened and he felt hot and sweaty. The familiar feeling of adrenaline in his veins, but he had only ever felt it before a battle or a raid. Closing his eyes, he let the cool wind caress his face, blowing his hair around in the breeze. He tried steadying his breath, dreaming of his former home, but there was only one thing he saw.

Stiorra.

And there’s the 1st part and my 1st Sigtryggr & Stiorra fanfiction. Not sure how many parts this will be, so we’ll see where this goes. Also, I plan on including the scenes from the show as well as other ideas to fill in the gaps, so if you have anything special you would like me to add. Please let me know. :)

it's wednesday so ask me about my WIPs! maybe that'll get my brain gears turning enough to actually finish and publish any of them

My current WIPs:

DHG 2: the second chapter of my Our Flag Means Death Stizzy fic Don't Handle Gently which i have been struggling to write for months. like literally that document is only 1500 words i've been at it since pretty much immediately after i published the first chapter last august. strange that i'm having such a hard time w/ it because it's planned out really well in my head so can i please just put it into words already? Also this is literally the only non-loki-centric fic on this list whoops

prince of jotunheim: this was an idea i had pretty recently and have manged to bust out 2000 words in a relatively short time, meant to be just a oneshot. captain america and the avengers realize that hydra has loki's scepter and they cannot find it, so they go to jotunheim where loki was sent as punishment after The Avengers (2012) to interrogate loki and are not prepared for what they find. really this fic is just a vehicle to express a lot of headcanons and theories i have about the mcu i regards to loki and elements relating to him.

Stained Red ch 1 draft: you'll notice that this document specifies the chapter and that it's a draft and that's because i started writing something entirely different as a oneshot about Loki but then i went, "no! i can make this an elaborate project i'll work on on and off for over eight months and still not be anywhere close to completing the first chapter that is already over 5000 words!" 😑🔫 it's a Loki/Matt Murdock fic, no I still have not actually gotten them in the same room to talk to each other yet, I only managed to bring Matt into the story 600 words ago. I posted a draft of this back in february, some of what's in there has been cut or edited.

Infinity war break it: you know about fix it fics? "oh canon was broken so i'm gonna repair it, grab the duct tape tee hee! :)" well i know infinity war is already broken but goddamn i'm gonna take a hammer and break it some more! break it worse! heimdal sends loki (and thus the space stone) to earth before thanos's army even boards. (and because thanos doesn't get the space stone, he can't follow through on the rest of the shit he did in the movie (including sending his kids to earth) as he has to get there the slow way instead of instantly teleporting) and then the avengers have to reunite to stop loki, who crashed down into Strange's house and then ran away, as far as WIPs go this is like barely on the way to being dough, it's flour and salt but i need to go to the store to buy yeast

matchmaker thor: I've started and scrapped the beginning of this fic multiple times, i last opened it almost a month ago but honestly i have been thinking about this wip a lot lately, mainly in the sense that i think for this fic it'd be fun to have Loki be a trans man, like as an extra detail slightly informing the context of Loki's life. Loki lives in stark tower, Thor meets daredevil and finds out he knows if people are or aren't lying and decides that he would be a perfect match for famous liar Loki and sets out to set them up! if only Loki would stop wasting his attentions on this annoying Matt guy he met at the library.

“Hey Cap,” Bruce greets as the elevator doors shut behind me. Walking out into the lounge, I offer my friend a nod and a smile as he sits at the large dining table, appearing to be working on something in a notebook. I take a quick glance around the rest of the empty space before walking over to the kitchen, grabbing myself a glass from one of the cabinets and filling it with water. Taking a few long gulps of the liquid, I turn back around. Bruce is looking up at me.

“Where is everyone?” I ask casually. As far as I know, no one’s left for any missions, and on a Saturday afternoon like this, it’s usually a little busier out in the common space.

“Nat and Clint are down training. Wanda and Peter are in their rooms, I think. Tony went out somewhere. I have no idea about Thor. He might’ve gone back to- oh, there he is,” Bruce says, nodding towards the hallway. I turn and look to see the god himself standing in the archway, his hammer in one hand, and a calculator in the other.

“Hello Dr. Banner, Captain,” the Asgardian greets both of us. Walking over and taking a seat at the table across from Bruce, he offers the calculator to the doctor. “I believe that Peter might require some assistance in completing his math homework,” he tells Bruce, causing him to raise an eyebrow.

“Oh yeah?” Bruce asks, “what makes you say that?”

“He and I have been working on it for the past four hours, with very minimal progress. At this point, I advise he receives higher council.” I take a few more swallows of water before I dump the rest down the drain, setting the glass in the sink.

“Where were you?” Bruce asks, looking over at me.

“I was out buying a car seat,” I explain. “Natasha and I ordered most things online, but I needed some help picking one out, so I went to a store.” Bruce nods and Thor pounds a few keys on the calculator, sighing in frustration. “Is Willa still sleeping?”

“Most likely,” Bruce guesses. Slowly but surely, we’ve been working towards transitioning into using the girl’s new name. We all slip up here and there, but for the most part, the change has been successful. Sam was very pleased when we let him know the news. He was also a big fan of the new name itself. ‘It’s kinda funky,’ he had said. 'I like it.’

“I’m gonna go check on her,” I decide, leaving the two men at the table to figure out Peter’s homework situation.

Making my way down the long hallway, I pause for a moment at the high schooler’s door, which is cracked just slightly open. Peering in, I find the boy sitting at his desk, pulling on his hair, clearly frustrated. I smile sympathetically to myself, tapping lightly a few times on the door frame. Peter glances over at me, sighing when he sees me. The dark bags under his eye tell me this must be quite some math homework.

“Hey Cap,” the boy greets, his voice mimicking his usual chirpy self, though it’s clear that underneath he’s exhausted.

“Hey bud, heard you’ve been struggling with some math,” I say gently in response. He nods, a frown forming slightly on his face. “I’m sure Bruce or Tony will be able to help you figure it out. Those guys eat numbers for breakfast,” I reassure him. The kid nods again, seeming to know I’m most likely right. “But hey, it’s only Saturday. Why don’t you give the books a break for a little while?”

“I-I can’t, sir. I mean- I-I shouldn’t. I didn’t do so hot on the last algebra test so- so I gotta make up for it this time,” Pete rambles. I smile understandingly at the teen, his diligence to his schoolwork never failing to impress me.

“I’m sure you’ll be just fine, kid,” I encourage him. “Don’t work yourself too hard, alright? You look beat.”

“Thanks, Cap,” he replies. “I’ll try to take a break soon.” At this, I give him one last nod before turning and continuing my way down the hall.

Willa’s door is closed. I pause, wondering if I should knock. Not wanting to wake the child, I decide to just gently open it, stepping inside as quietly as I can. The sight before me catches me off guard. Wanda is sitting in an armchair at Willa’s bedside, one of her arms reaching out and holding the sleeping girl’s hand. The witch’s eyes are closed, a faint red glow surrounding her head. A similar aura surrounds Willa’s, as well.

I close the door behind me, clearing my throat. Wanda snaps to attention and looks up at me, her gaze softening as it meets mine. I make my way over to her, sitting down in front of her on the edge of the mattress, making sure not to disturb the sleeping girl. “Hey Wanda,” I murmur, my voice barely above a whisper. “What are you doing here?”

The older girl takes a deep breath, biting her lip slightly before answering my question. “I came to check on her, found her crying in her sleep,” she explains, her own voice barely audible as well. “I knew she was dreaming. I wanted to see.” At this, she looks down at their connected hands, and the blanks fill in inside my head.

“You can see what she’s dreaming,” I reply, my response more of a statement than a question. Wanda nods, an unspeakable sadness washed over her delicate face. “Can you tell me?”

Taking a deep breath, the witch closes her eyes again. The red glow around her intensifies, her facial expression transitioning into deep concentration. “She’s… in a hallway. With very bright lights. She’s… being carried, slung over someone’s shoulder.” I clasp my hands together, resting my elbows on my knees, leaning in to listen. “It’s… a long hallway. She’s… afraid. She’s trying not to cry.” I glance over at Willa, a pained look resting on her pale face. “She has been carried like this many times before. She does not question what is going to happen,” Wanda tells me gravely. Then, the girl is quiet for a few moments before disclosing more. “They threw her… into a room. The floor is concrete; she hit her face. Her nose is… it’s bleeding.”

Willa whimpers in her sleep, and I have to use nearly all the strength inside of me to resist the urge to wrap her up in my arms and rock her back and forth until she wakes, safe with me again. Though it’s difficult to watch, I’m not sure waking her up would be the best thing to do at the moment. And if I’m being completely honest, I’m very intrigued to learn what she’s dreaming about.

“She’s cowering in the corner. She hears footsteps coming.” Wanda’s eyes open, and she reaches out, placing her other hand on mine. “Here, I’ll show you,” she says almost hurriedly, and suddenly, visions begin flashing before my eyes, as if I’m watching a movie on a screen.

Willa is cowering in the corner of a room, just like Wanda had described. The lights are painfully bright; the only sound is the clicking of loud boots against the floor. Someone’s coming… there’s a shadow appearing… I gasp.

It’s me. Willa is dreaming of me.

I stand in the doorway, towering over the girl’s small body burrowing into the corner. It’s a strange perspective; the vision is from Willa’s point of view. I’m looking at myself from across the room, through the eyes of the child.

I watch as I step into the room, and the light hits my face. It’s red with anger. My hands are curling up into fists.

I can feel Willa’s fear coursing through her veins at the speed of light. Her heart pounding in her chest. Her ears ringing. I watch as tears fog the lens I’m looking through. In the dream, she’s shaking. She begins to cry out loud, the sounds coming from her horrible and heartbreaking.

I watch as I walk up, grabbing her by the throat. It feels like I’m suffocating, myself. My vision begins clouding at the edges. Dream-me raises a fist and begins pounding it into Willa’s cheeks. Blood splatters everywhere. A scream is caught in her throat.

I throw her down to the ground. My boot pulls back and then swings forward, meeting her rib cage. I can feel the cracking of bones deep inside. The boot strikes her again and again, without cease. Willa can be heard screaming.

“Please, please, please.’” Over and over again.

Then suddenly, the blows stop, and for a moment, things are quiet and still. From my sideways view from the floor, I can see that a cart has been wheeled into the room. I watch as I grab a syringe from the tray, walking over and crouching down in front of Willa’s mangled body.

“Now hold still,” I tell the child, grabbing her arm and forcing the needle into her tender skin. A strange warmth spreads across my whole body. My heart breaks when I realize that Willa can no longer move.

“Please, what are y-you doing, stop, please,” she coughs through blood.

“We need more of you,” I hiss back. I watch in horror as I begin tearing off the child’s bloodied clothes.

Suddenly, the screen in front of me falls away, and I’m thrown back into reality. Wanda is sitting in front of me, her hands now off me and the child, cradling the older girl’s own head instead. My heart pounds rapidly in my chest as feelings of guilt and sadness overwhelm me. I hurt her in her dreams. I punch and kick and violate her. I doubt this is the first time she’s had a dream like this. How often do I abuse her in her sleep?

Quiet whimpering breaks my train of thought. Willa is now trembling beside me, big warm tears rolling down her cheeks. “Wanda,” I struggle to form words, turning back to my friend. “How about you go get some air?” I offer. She nods gratefully, unable to even look up at me as she quickly makes her way out of the room, closing the door behind her. Turning back to the child on the bed, my heart aches as I watch her cry. It’s time to wake her up now. I don’t want her dream to go any further.

Leaning down slightly, I pull out one of the bins beneath the bed that we’ve placed some of her new things in. I shuffle through it until I find what I’m looking for: the case of pacifiers. Opening it quietly, I pull out a light blue one with a bear on it. A comfort object, as Bruce had called it. We haven’t given her one yet. But considering everything I just saw through Wanda, I figure now might not be a bad time to start.

Sliding the bin back under the bed, I set the pacifier down on the mattress as I refocus my attention back to Willa. As gently as I can, I shift on the bed into one of our normal positions: leaning back against the pillows with the child wrapped up in my arms, cradled in my lap. More than anything, I just want her to wake up to being held.

Finally, I take one last deep breath in attempts to slow down my heart rate before I begin to rock the girl gently in my arms, hoping to rouse her from her state of reverie. Her eyes stay clamped shut, tears still pouring down her cheeks as she writhes in her sleep.

“Willa, hey,” I call out soothingly, using a careful hand to begin smoothing down her hair. “Wake up, Willa. It’s just a dream. C'mon, sweetheart. Open your eyes.” Realizing I’m getting nowhere, I sigh, moving my hand down from her hair to her cheek, wiping the tears away with my thumb as they fall. “Willa, baby, come on. Wake up for me,” I coo, my voice a little bit louder than before. Her eyelids begin to flutter and a slight feeling of relief washes over me as I murmur, “That’s right, sweetie. There you go.”

With that, the girl’s eyes shoot open, and when they connect with mine, she lets out a frightened sob. “Hey, hey. It’s okay,” I murmur as I run my thumb over her cheek again, causing her to flinch back and slam her eyes shut in fear. My other hand reaches down and feels around on the sheets until I find the object I set there earlier. I raise it up in front of the little girl, her eyes still clamped shut. Bouncing her once gently on my lap, I try to get her attention.

“Willa, sweetheart, open your eyes,” I request, not surprised in the slightest when she follows my order, her brow furrowing in confusion at the object in front of her. “Can you open your mouth for me, doll? C'mon, it’s alright,” I coax, rubbing at her cheek a little bit closer to her mouth. The child cowers back in fear, clearly scared of the item in my hand. “It’s okay, kiddo, it won’t hurt you. It’s just something to help you feel better, bug. Look, it’s even got a little bear on it,” I show her, still not seeming to convince her fully.

Sighing, my heart breaks a little as I realize there’s not going to be any easy way to do this. “It’s alright, sweetie. Not scary,” I promise one more time as I press the nub up against her closed mouth, easing it in as gently as I can as she lets out a terrified whimper. “There you go, sweetheart,” I breathe, relieved to see her softening up almost as soon as the pacifier settles in her mouth.

Wide eyes peer shyly up at mine as the girl’s tears come to a halt. I stroke her cheek again, and this time she lets me, confirming that the comfort object has done its job. Quickly and efficiently, might I add.

The side of Willa’s little head rests gently against my chest as she blinks a few times, completely satiated by the pacifier. “That’s it, see? You’re okay,” I comfort her softly, and she melts further into my arms, a familiar feeling of indescribable affection rising up in my chest. “Did you have a nightmare?” I ask the small girl, already knowing the answer. She nods silently, then sniffles. “You’re safe, sweetheart. Bad dreams are scary, I know. But they can’t hurt you.” Her eyes begin to droop slightly, and I smile at her softly, leaning down and planting a kiss on her forehead. “You can go back to sleep now, Willa. And I’ll stay right here, I promise. I’ll keep you safe.” At this, she lets out a deep breath, her eyes blinking heavily a few times before they eventually shut again.

As I continue to rub her cheek lovingly, a long-awaited feeling of calmness sweeps over me as her breaths steady out. The pacifier bobs slightly in her mouth, and finally, her expression falls completely, letting me know she’s asleep once more. My thumb moves up and wipes the last few tears from the corners of her eyes, and I lean my own head back against the pillows, my chin resting down slightly against the top of Willa’s head.

Images from her dream flash briefly before my eyes again. I take in a shaky breath, making a silent promise to the little girl, and to myself. I can’t take away her nightmares. But I sure as hell can be there every time to wake her up. And to hold and comfort and love her. For as long as she needs. Whatever it takes, until she’s okay again.

Lightyear (2022) Review

There was a lack of, dare I say, buzz on this one. I’ll see myself out.

Plot: While spending years attempting to return home, marooned Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear encounters an army of ruthless robots commanded by Zurg who are attempting to steal his fuel source.

The Toy Story franchise is arguably one of the main staples of Pixar’s filmography, with a lot of the current generation having grown up on those films, and even the recent Toy Story 4 bringing new eyes to the series. So naturally Disney being Disney and business is business, the studio wanted to rake in more of that green dollar bill using a nostalgia heavy property. So a spin-off was inevitable, and it comes to us in the shape of Lightyear, which from the opening crawl of the movie is described as the movie Andy would have saw back in the 90′s and what would have inspired him to buy a Buzz toy. Seems fair, however....WAIT. Hang on. Andy in the original Toy Story film didn’t buy Buzz Lightyear. Heck, he didn’t even care about space or whatnot. He was given the Lightyear toy as a surprise birthday gift by him mum! AHA!! So have I just discovered a plot hole?? Why yes, I did. Though to be fair, having seen Lightyear it shares hardly anything in common with the Toy Story films, and even Buzz as a character is different to that of the Tim Allen version. Speaking of Allen, I’ve read an article where he states he doesn’t approve of this new version of the character. And neither does Tom Hanks. So, like, point made. Whatever the point is, I don’t know, I’m just trying to stir the pot. In any case, other references to the Toy Story films such as the origin of Zurg deviate from what was originally told, so even classing it as a spin off seems a stretch, minus maybe the use of the signature “to infinity and beyond” which you bet this movie hammers down on that line a heck of a lot.

However even as a stand-alone film Lightyear is uninspiring. As a science fiction movie, it gives us the most basic child-like concepts stolen from other Sci-Fi's such as Interstellar, and if you think too deeply into the overly unnecessarily convoluted plot it doesn’t make sense either. As a comedy movie, it’s more of a miss than hit, with the only solid jokes coming from the cat, and by the way speaking of cats, has anyone played Stray? It’s a new video game where you get to play as a cat! You can scratch carpets! Push bottles off roofs! You can MEOW too!! Look, if you haven’t heard of it, check it out - Stray. Anyway, enough with my random deviation for pointless advertisement, back to Lightyear. The comedy isn’t funny, and there is also one character here named Mo, who’s entire shtick was to make the stupidest of mistakes that would constantly sabotage the team, and its played for laughs however comes off as annoying. Funnily enough, this character is voiced by Taika Waititi, and no shade to the guy, but he’s now voiced two super annoying characters this year in this and Thor: Love & Thunder, just saying. The guy’s building a track record. That being said, I still love his movie Hunt for the Wilderpeople. So, like, I’m not totally biased.

Chris Evans voicing Buzz - he’s fine. Look, he does a fairly good imitation of Tim Allen, but again, one wonders why not just get Tim Allen back in the role. The movie as a whole though is pretty boring, and even though visually there are some absolutely stunning sequences, making you gasp in awe at how much computer animation has developed since the days of the original Toy Story, in the end this is a forgettable and pointless romp that didn’t really need to be made. But hey, Disney be Disney and business is business.

So, this one is gonna be controversial but I'm gonna talk about a trend I absolutely hate and makes me feel concerned.

I haven't seen "Thor: Love & Thunder" but I have seen people bitching that there was no trigger warning for cancer.

Here is the thing, my rabbits and my debutantes, cancer is actually a trigger for me. When my mother was literally dying in the hospital someone I considered a friend showed me the movie "Before I Wake". It's a wonderful movie, it even fits into a genre I call 'happy horror' where the monster is beaten and some end the movie better than they started it. But the villain is actually a (spoilers) child's trauma over watching his mother die of cancer, something he interpreted as a monster eating her which caused his psychic powers to create a monster that ate people who dared to loved him. I cried so hard I threw up.

See, the thing is.... I do appreciate trigger warnings. The site doesthedogdie doesn't exist for no reason. But demanding, insisting, on trigger warnings? Getting pissed when they aren't there? That's insane. This isn't a "I didn't have it so the kids today shouldn't have it either" kind of thing. I think learning to digest and select media is a vitally important aspect of growing up. I don't think I'd be a better person if, when I picked up "Daughter of The Blood" it had come with a warning that my 11 year old eyes were about to read the most fucked up shit they ever did see. I very much believe you need to develop the skills needed to say, "This isn't for me and I'm not going to enjoy it. I can leave at any time, it's only a book or it's only a movie or its only a show, but it is something I can walk away from. No one is holding me down and making me consume this."

This isn't a thing where I'm like, "Toughen up! Life is hard and you have to be harder!" It's just about being realistic about what the world will be. Maybe the smell of a creamsicle will send you running. That doesn't mean you get to ban creamsicles. Maybe fireworks scare you to pieces. The 4th of July and New Years will happen anyway. Perhaps sexual language upsets you, but even kids are going to say "Aw, balls," when they're annoyed. If you're hurt by ordinary moments then you're going to get hurt a lot. I wear headphones and tinted lenses because the world is too loud and too bright for me. I still get stung. But you're not going to win a fight trying to beat the world into the shape you want it to be, you gotta just figure out how to live.

It's that I do like that we're doing better about triggers, I really do, but I think insisting, demanding, is goddamn bonkers. Guardians of the Galaxy makes me cry whenever I watch it because I saw my mother look just like Peter's mom did and no one raised a single bit of fuss. Graphic depictions of cancer very much do suck if that's a trigger for you. But, for chrissake, it's legit fascist bullshit to whine every time you see something that makes you feel anything other than perfect. Nottajoke, I'm very serious that policing art and expression from the left is concerning. Marvel is barely even art, but this honestly reads identical to when the right flipped their shit over Baymax showing a transman buying tampons. This kind of handwringing nonsense is why there's no proper difference between TERFS and tradwives. I hate it. Once you start putting the hammer down on trigger warnings that's begging for book bans, Huckleberry Finn has the n-word, it has bad language! Lolita has child molestation! Books have words and concepts! Have you read Beloved? It's awful how many bad things happen!

Stories are there to be stories. You can pick and choose the ones you engage with, but you don't get to be mad if there's something upsetting you didn't expect. Sometimes the surprise is a part of the story that's important. Sometimes you don't know what will upset you. Freak out about anything other than fucking stories, please, there are reasons to complain about them but not because anyone is entitled to perfect comfort all the time every time.

PHASE 2

2015: Adrienne comes across Jean in the rec room prompting Adrienne to have a breakdown as she tries to deal with the new version of her friend. Later Jean texts Adrienne asking if she’d like to go for the promised cupcake. The two go to a bakery for cupcakes after Jean’s fellowship interview. Megan asks Topaz if she’s like to go out for coffee this weekend to catch up. Topaz then texts Amanda telling her that there is a Megan Gwynn in this universe. Wanda wanders down to the medLab to see about a regular check up from Cecilia and the talk turns towards the state of the world and themselves Into The Fog: Jennie remembers Hammersmith and Fulham as they were in the past and provides Marie-Ange, Doug and Amanda with everything she knows about Mother and her Disciples. Clint drives Matt to the mansion and they meet Cecilia. Wade and Adrienne decide to buy out the cupcake ATM as a kind of therapy.

2016: After sparring, North and Wade set up shop to leave some surprises for the thieves in their lives. Tandy invites the mansion's residents to her Leap Day birthday party. Natasha texts Clint about a bunch of things.

2017: Nica shares an Epic Rap Battle between Frederick Douglass and Thomas Jefferson. Warren thanks Darcy for his birthday cookies and suggests a movie night with Jubilee. Warren announces on the journals that he forgot his birthday and declares it his Birthday Week instead. Hope A. asks Sue and Doug for help on a research project for X-Factor. Honey, I Shrunk the Magic Class: When Billy pops into Amanda’s shrinking objects class, spells go haywire and the six magic users find themselves shrunk down to the size of bugs and battling Topaz’s animated Army men; sucked up into the vacuum cleaner, the group escapes the trash can and heads for the kitchen; Rogue wonders where Amanda has gotten to, having made plans to meet; in the kitchen, Megan tries to get Namor’s attention and is nearly squashed for her trouble, and the group realises they have to solve their own problems; Fourteen wonders at a sudden burst of “oh crap” thoughts and asks for aspirin; Billy and Stephen risk life and limb crossing the halls during dinner rush; Tabitha is Done with animated objects when she encounters Topaz’s Army figures; Tandy also has noticed the missing magic class and the animated Army men; Topaz and Clea find themselves fleeing from Rooney the Cat; Marie-Ange alerts X-Force and the X-Men to Amanda’s absence and asks for a security sweep of the mansion.

Stunning amphitheatres are filled with row upon row of towering spire-shaped rock formations known as hoodoos. These hoodoos are a vibrant mix of reds and oranges, pinks and whites. In the early morning light, they look like they’re on fire. Hoodoos come is all shapes and sizes, formed by nature into figures that resemble cultural icons including Thor’s Hammer and Queen Victoria. Bryce Canyon National Park is not that big, and the highlights can be comfortably explored in one day on several achievable hikes in the area. Here’s our one day in Bryce itinerary, it captures all the best views and visits the strangest rock formations. There’s a map of the area and tips on where to stay. BRYCE NATIONAL PARK HOW MANY DAYS IN BRYCE CANYON? One day is the perfect amount of time in Bryce Canyon National Park. Plan your itinerary well and you can see all the best viewpoints and hike to the most interesting parts of the amphitheatre. Avid hikers may want to spend longer, but with so much else to see in Utah we recommend following our 2-week road trip itinerary and heading on to Zion Canyon National Park or Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. BRYCE CANYON LAYOUT Bryce Canyon National Park is relatively small. One main road runs from north to south with viewpoints stretched along its length. It only takes about 30 minutes to drive from one end to the other. The most dramatic part of the park is the main amphitheatre which sits just under the rim between Bryce Point and Sunrise Point. QUEEN’S GARDEN MAP | BRYCE CANYON The map below shows the layout of the main amphitheatre area and includes our favorite viewpoints and hiking trails. Rim Trail from Sunset to Sunrise Point – brown. Navajo Loop Trail – orange. Queen’s Garden Trail – red. Click on the top right corner of the map to open a larger version in a new tab or the star to save to your Google Maps. SUNRISE AT BRYCE CANYON Dawn in Bryce Canyon National Park is magical. As the sun rises over the horizon it gradually lights up all the hoodoos in the amphitheatre. The slightly dull browns become a shimmering of pinks, oranges, and reds. The best viewpoint at sunrise is (not the misnamed Sunrise Point) but Bryce Point. From here you get a view of the entire sweep of the amphitheatre as the sun lights it up. It can get busy, so it’s worth arriving 15 to 30 minutes before the sun comes up. There’s a large parking lot next to the viewpoint which is a 10-minute drive from the visitors’ centre. Breakfast – If you fancy breakfast after the early start, Bryce Canyon Lodge serves breakfast from 7 am to 10 am (April to October) and has a choice of buffet or à la carte. They don’t take reservations, so you can just turn up. BRYCE POINT MORNING IN BRYCE CANYON Straight after breakfast is the best time to hit the trails before it gets too hot. With only one day in Bryce Canyon, you should focus on exploring the main amphitheatre between Bryce Point and Sunrise Point. There are hikes for all abilities, so pick the one that suits you most. 1. RIM TRAIL The Rim Trail is an almost entirely flat walk along the edge of the canyon rim. Looking down on the hoodoos you’ll be able to make out some of the strange shapes like Thor’s Hammer. The views gradually change as you arc around the amphitheatre. It’s a very easy hike and you can pick the length you want to complete.

Sunset to Sunrise Point (brown on map) – 0.5 miles | 20 minutes Inspiration to Sunrise Point – 1.2 miles | 40 minutes Bryce Point to Sunrise Point – 2.7 miles | 1 hour 30 minutes Shuttle buses run on the road behind the rim, so you can walk one way and get the bus back. RIM TRAIL VIEWS 2. NAVAJO LOOP TRAIL The Navajo Loop trail begins at Sunset Point. It drops just over 500 feet down the canyon via sharp switchbacks between narrow walls. Along the way it passes the famous hoodoo called Thor’s Hammer and Douglas Fir trees that contrast beautifully with the orange rock. The loop has two sides: Two Bridges and Wall Street. The park authorities recommend hiking down Wall Street and up Two Bridges. The hike is only 1.3 miles but with 500 feet of ascent and descent it can take 1 hour to 90 minutes. (Marked in orange on map above) Unfortunately, the walk cannot be completed in winter as Wall Street closes. It was also closed in fall 2023 due to trail damage, so check the latest information before you set off. NAVAJO LOOP NAVAJO LOOP THOR’S HAMMER 3. QUEENS AND NAVAJO COMBINATION LOOP This is the most popular hike in Bryce Canyon National Park. It heads along the Rim Trail (brown on map) between Sunset and Sunrise Point, drops down into the canyon via Queen’s Garden Trail (red on map) and climbs back up to the rim using the Two Bridges section of the Navajo loop (orange on map). It’s a great contrasting combination of trails. The Rim trail offers grand views over the canyon, the Queen’s Garden Trail sweeps gracefully around the hoodoos, while the Two Bridges section is wedged between the narrow canyon walls. The walk is 2.9 miles long with 625 feet of ascent and descent. It takes about 2 – 3 hours. QUEEN VICTORIA QUEEN’S GARDEN TRAIL 4. FIGURE 8 If you’re an avid hiker, we recommend the Figure 8 trail. It combines the Queen’s Trail and Navajo Loop above with the Peekaboo Loop. The Peekaboo loop is a bit tougher than the others, but the rewards are fewer people and great views over the Wall of Windows and Cathedral. It starts at Sunset Point, follows the Rim Trail to Sunrise Point (brown on the map), drops down into the canyon using Queen’s Garden Trail (red), completes the Peekaboo loop (purple on map), and reconnects with Navajo loop (orange) to climb up to the rim. The entire hike is 6.4 miles with 1,575 feet of ascent and descent and takes 4-5 hours. Half-way around there are pit toilets (summer only). WINDOWS PEEKABOO LUNCH IN BRYCE CANYON There are several options for lunch in the park, but they are usually only open from May to October. If you take one of the longer hikes (like the Figure 8) it’s a good idea to bring a packed lunch and plenty of water. The Lodge at Bryce Canyon – Lunch is served in the wood-panelled dining room from 11:30 to 3pm on a first-come-first-served basis. The General Store – Located next to Sunrise Point, it serves grab and go hot and cold foods like soup and sandwiches. Valhalla Pizzeria & Coffee Shop – Opposite Bryce Canyon Lodge it offers pizzas, salads, and drinks. Water-filling stations are at Sunset Point restrooms, and the General Store near sunrise point (May-October). AFTERNOON IN BRYCE CANYON The temperatures rise in the afternoon so it’s a good time to get in your car (or use the shuttle bus) to explore the other viewpoints in the National Park. You should have already seen Sunset and Sunrise Points on the hike, but here’s our pick of the others to see on a one-day Bryce itinerary. INSPIRATION POINT Inspiration points is a three-level viewing platform looking over the main amphitheatre. The view towards Sunset Point with the hoodoos backed by Boat Mesa is wonderful. (5-minute drive from the visitors’ centre) BRYCE POINT If you did not get here for dawn, head to Bryce Point in the afternoon. It provides the best sweeping views over the entire amphitheatre. (10-minute drive from the visitors’ centre). SUNSET POINT RAINBOW & YOVIMBA POINTS At

the very southern end of the park (a 30-minute drive from the visitors’ centre), these two viewpoints are not as dramatic as the main amphitheatre, but they do offer good views of the Grand Staircase. The Grand Staircase are a series of colourful rock layers that rise like a staircase from Grand Canyon North Rim to Bryce. At Yovimba you are standing on the Pink Cliffs, looking down at the Grey Cliffs. In the distance you can see the White Cliffs and beneath those the Red Vermilion cliffs. Much of this wonderful scenery can be explored in nearby Grand Staircase Escalante National Park. RAINBOW POINT FAIRYLAND POINT Many visitors forget to stop at Fairyland Point. North of the visitors’ centre and down a wooded track, it provides a wonderful view of younger hoodoos overlooking Fairyland Canyon. In our opinion, it is the best viewpoint not on the main amphitheatre. (8-minute drive from the visitors’ center) To drive and stop at all the above viewpoints takes about 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes. If you don’t have that much time skip Rainbow & Yovimba Points. FAIRYLAND POINT SUNSET AT BRYCE CANYON Sunset at Bryce Canyon is nowhere near as impressive as sunrise. The main amphitheatre is facing the wrong way and most of the hoodoos are in the shade. It would be no crime to leave Bryce Canyon in the late afternoon and head off to your next destination. However, if you want to add sunset to your one-day itinerary in Bryce, head back to whichever is your favorite viewpoint. We’d go for Bryce Point. VIEW FROM SUNSET POINT WHEN TO VISIT BRYCE NATIONAL PARK? The best time to visit is from May-June and September-October, when the temperatures are good for exploring and the trails are less busy. At 8,000 feet in altitude Bryce Canyon National Park is cooler than other National Parks in Utah, but it can still reach 80°F (26°C) in summer, and a mighty cold 14°F (-10°C) in winter. In summer the weather conditions are still good, but the summer holidays make the park a lot busier. In winter many of the park facilities are closed and the trails often covered in snow. QUEEN’S GARDEN WHERE TO STAY NEAR BRYCE CANYON There’s only one lodge in the park, but it’s easy (and cheaper) to stay just outside and drive in (the park is open 24 hours) to visit all the sights at Bryce Canyon. OUR PICK TROPIC BRYCE CANYON LOG CABINS Cute, well-decorated, good-value log cabins in the town of Tropic. An excellent place to spend the night between Bryce and Escalante. It’s a 15-minute drive from the visitors’ centre. BOOKING.COM | HOTELS.COM BRYCE CANYON THE LODGE AT BRYCE CANYON The only lodging inside the park, this historic building is very atmospheric and just a short walk from the rim. I'm going over what are you saying in the code we did figure out where and there are people listening and they're intercepting it and they're ignoring threats on almost everyone so I have to handle those and negate them further he has been doing this for years and he has been constantly selling people and it doesn't do anything then he says I'm creating a huge enemy for the max which is treason to his kind and the max are ending up with a lot of the stuff so really he's a moron selling out to the max and he doesn't realize it and not really he should because they're at his stuff they're at the bottom and they're pulling it out and their mind and he can't get to them because his troops are weaklings and he doesn't team up with anybody and we certainly are not going to assist him ever we are not going to help him in any way it is my orders and it is Olympus and we are going to make sure that they always are followed he doesn't get any heads up about anything at all that's the cause of damage to his ranks because that's the way it has to be and we're going through with figuring out the threat it would disabling them and we're stopping his little shipments and we're going to return the favor also we are going to make him very uncomfortable when he's trying to do something important extremely uncomfortable he's going to have to mess it up several times and when he's in the meeting we're going to probably have to ask him to leave with the police again as it happened last time and as he knows he doesn't get out for hours or even a day the longer we hold them the worst it is for him and he's a little baby has to pick on someone is very young and he doesn't get anything from it and he's incompetent and people don't do anything about it and that's what people need to see is what happens here today they'll sit here with their mouths open and they don't understand what he is is a complete failure and he's a boob and he needs to take a break but he doesn't think he has to. Odin is having A Manly Mental Breakdown™ about lokis death. Hes being suuuuuper paranoid about his special weapons (and weapons in general) and how theyve gotta hide them bc what if thor or frigga touch them and instadie too??

The w3 will stage treason bc their king is trying to get rid of their military **while on the brink of war**

Frigga somehow convinces Odin to give back the casket. Odin just. He feels soo guilty about lokis death that actually invites laufey to sign the peace treaty & get the casket back. War prevented 👍 except... Laufeys oldest has stayed bc he wants to be a protocol instructor and what better chance to be well off than work on the aesir-jotun relationships? Welp he kind of notices the MASSIVE commotion that is lokis funeral. And tells on his dad. Jotunheim declares war.

Meanwhile thor is having A Mental Breakdown too :D since he has no powers he looks like a jotun. He does get found by jane and co and they keep him at their place bc wtf thats an alien they are smart enough not to put them through the medical system and get him got by the government.

Somehow he is convinced he needs to seduce jane w his "new body" (not really, hes just too self concious about it -always has been- and has watched beauty and the beast back on asgard and thinks it is a valid reason "to break the spell" -there is no spell-). He learns of his hammer over the local radio/podcast/tv and thinks his hammer will "break the curse" (it does not)

The us gov is already onto him bc they live in a fucking desert, how come jane&co start bulk buying parkas off amazon all of a sudden??

Events of thor happen, but this time is Frigga the one that goes to meet him. She tells him that Odin has died and Loki is king. The jotuns have had him perma-banned from asgard. Thor cries. Frigga disappears. Thor starts getting experimented on the moment she leaves.

W3 are planning to go rescue thor when whoops a full jotun invasion is going on. Odin tries to send them to the dungeons, but since the guards do not have any weapons the w3 kiiiind of get them off quickly.

Frigga tries to stop them through a MASSIVE guilt trip. Bc wow they are kind of actually deserting the army during an actual invasion. Heimdal is here to help tho, so he freezes her over. Turns out heimdal is half jotun. In fact, he is odins half brother on the jotun side. Frigga... Kind of dies? So they gotta keep moving.

They get sent to earth through a cool battle sequence and heimdal fills them in the jotun!Thor situation... Which now they know they HAVE to get in order to calm laufey down (who doesnt know how """his son loki""" has died so he is also kind of grieving his "dead son" yet again)

Now they get into some spy shit. Heimdal is a great help btw he can see where thor is, and he is smart enough to have stolen gungir before leaving asgard. He saw odin having a mental breakdown about the spear and took it after he left.

Or maybe a werewolf? You could even go as Dracula or something more creative like Marie Antoinette or King Arthur. A witch doctor is someone who uses black magic. If you are going to be a witch doctor, you can either buy or make your mask and costume for the part.

Get some brown pants, a dark-colored shirt (preferably black), and paint on symbols like stars and moons with white paint if you’re making it yourself. You can buy a plain white one for the mask and paint on symbols like stars and moons with black paint or make your own by cutting out some paper in the shape of stars and moons. If you want to be more creative, maybe glue some tinsel around it, as shown below.

If you find it too difficult to make the mask and clothing yourself, you can always buy them ready-made. A werewolf is a person who changes into a wolf when there’s a full moon. Try Before You Buy - Tiny Thor

Hello and welcome to try before you buy, where I find a game coming out and give it a test to let you know whether I feel it’s worth testing. These may be available demos or just indie games that got money to expand into full fledged games with more content. In any case, I will also provide links to where you can download these and try them on your own as our opinions may differ. Today I’m taking a look at a game that caught my attention from a press release, months after it was announced for the Nintendo Switch and Steam. I’m a big fan of nostalgia and when I saw Tiny Thor, it immediately brought me back to playing my Super Nintendo Entertainment System. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MfeFK7DPUI Tiny Thor is set for a Q2 release this year and is scheduled to come out on the Nintendo Switch and on Steam. Asylum Square Interactive gmbH developed the game and Gameforge 4d GmbH published it. In Their Own Words Asylum Square is an independent games developer, based in the Black Forest in Germany. We grew up with game systems like the Sega Master System, SNES or the Commodore Amiga and C64. In 2014 Jochen founded Asylum Square to create games he would have loved to play back then and there on the living room carpet. To achieve this we work together with a bunch of very talented people and industry veterans. Some of them even were part of those original, inspiring experiences and have joined us on our current endeavors. Tiny Thor features 16-bit graphics and gameplay centered around using Mjölnir, leading our Norse hero through challenging levels filled with all kinds of obstacles. It offers tight controls, fast-paced action and an experience tinged with nostalgia. Tiny Thor will feel familiar to retro fans, but also unique in its own ways. It features true 16-bit pixel art from Henk Nieborg and an original soundtrack by Chris Hülsbeck. Starting as a relatively simple platformer, Tiny Thor unfolds along the way, as you unlock all kinds of abilities that you dreamed of having back in the day. The platforming is punctuated with exhilarating boss battles which will test the son of Odin. Each realm features a set of almighty adversaries who want to stop Thor on his way to becoming a true god. You will need to make use of everything you learned along the way to beat them! Features - Master ricocheting hammer throws to overwhelm enemies - Learn awesome special abilities - Explore over 30 handcrafted levels across three distinct realms - Challenging boss fights, each with unique mechanics - Rattle your brain to solve tricky environmental puzzles - Discover tons of secrets and collect hidden gems to unlock challenge levels - Enjoy the story of a boy taking responsibility My Experience and Thoughts As I mentioned above, I am a huge fan of nostalgia. When they said that this was a love letter to the 16-bit era, they weren’t kidding. If you were to sit this game down in front of me when I was 9 and have me play it, I wouldn’t bat an eye, because it looks like it belongs on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. This game did also catch my eye, because with the rise of Marvel movies, when you say the name Thor Chris Hemsworth comes to mind. So, a side scrolling game with a sprinkle of nostalgia topped with a Norse god that came to comics and then to movies is a recipe of a game that I have to play. You start the game (demo) being told that it’s your birthday and that you have to get home to get the present from your father Odin. This level is really just a tutorial with some story and it’s meant for you to learn how to control Thor. I played this on Steam via the demo and used my Xbox Series X controller and it worked just fine. The game recognizes the controller and the dialogue boxes and button prompts change from keyboard to controller to aid you. You quickly learn that this is a platformer as they are blue gems scattered throughout that are there to be collectables as well as a guide to the correct way you should be going. If you ever get lost, just look for the blue gems and use them as your guide to where you need to go. During my gameplay there isn’t a significance that I noticed with the blue gems, only to be something you collected. This is topped off by a counter in the top right showing you how many blue gems are in the stage, so if you find yourself going a while without grabbing a blue gem then you probably missed an area. The blue gems aren’t needed to pass the level, but if you’re all in on getting every collectable than your time in a level may differ from others. You come across enemies and realized that jumping on their head is the best way to dispatch of them. This game mechanic isn’t set to just 16-bit games, but it’s a mechanic that works and has worked since I Super Mario Bros.. You don’t have a life bar, but you do find hearts with numbers in the middle. It was later that I found out that this allows for you to get hit without dying, but when you do get hit the heart leaves your body and starts bouncing around with the number in the middle counting down. The tough part about tying to run after it and getting it back is that fact that it may bounce off a cliff or to the enemy that initially hit you and it may be difficult to get back. This is also a nostalgic throwback to Super Mario Bros. where if you hit a question mark block and a mushroom came out, it may go the opposite way of where you are and you must go chase it down. As you jump on enemies to take them out you’ll eventually come to a large rock where electricity comes out when you get near it, these are save points. Like in most games with available save points, these are scattered around and you’ll more than often find them after completing a difficult section of the level. The one thing that I didn’t catch until I came across it a few times were white rats showing you were hidden rooms are. There are fake walls that you can walk through to get more gems or hearts. So, if you see a white rat walking around, do a quick once over in the area and look for any hidden rooms with potentially helpful items such as hearts. You make it to your father and are given Mjölnir as a gift. You can throw the magical hammer and it will ricochet off the walls and bounce around the level hurting and eventually taking out enemies it hits. You can also use the hammer to open pathways and to grab items that may be out of reach, such as gems. Even though the hammer will bounce all over where you are, if you press the same button to throw it again while it’s out of your possession it will return to you. There’s a bit of geometry that comes into play, so you’ll need to take time and aim it so it will eventually get to where you want it to go. This will be your main attack along side your jump and both will work to aid your adventure on through the rest of the game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdXrVAbDFmk The story progresses and you start making your way to different levels and experiencing different items to find. Along side the blue gems, there are also red big gems that are hidden and can be used to open different pathways. I feel like the game is rewarding for taking some extra time to explore the levels they’ve built. You also learn that Thor is not much a swimmer and dies if you hit the water. Luckily there doesn’t seem to be a set number of lives available, so if you need to take an hour and try to complete a section so you can get to the next save point, then that’s what you’ll be able to do. I was briefly stuck at the end of the first level as it didn’t really end, but I found something that looked like a portal with the option to quit level. Surely I didn’t want to quit the level, but after a few minutes I realized that the wording may not be the bets, and that’s how your end the level once you’re done collecting everything. The second level is where the difficulty ramps up when it comes to enemies. What you think is harmless snail with small spikes on his back is actually one of the more frustrating enemies you’ll meet during this demo. Throwing your hammer at it will do nothing, but it will become vulnerable when it pops out of it’s shell and starts walking towards you. You have to treat it like a Boo from Super Mario World and turn your back to it and then throw your hammer, jump over it when it comes back to you and have it hit the snail. This is simple enough when it comes to one snail, but when it comes to multiple it can be tricky. You can even bounce your hammer off a snail that is in it’s shell so it comes back and hits the snail behind you. The first big boss you fight is a forest creature who drops blocks like Tetris pieces has lark vine walls come up from the world The object is to hit the monster with your hammer, but if there are walls blocking the way you’ll have to bounce it off the falling blocks so it destroys the wall and breaks through to the monster. I really like the set it and forget it aspect of the strategy asking to be used. You can have it bound back and forth until it hits the monster all the while being able to jump to safety. I also like how there’s a tad bit of a delay when the blocks emerge when they fall, this gives you time to jump out of the way or call back your hammer if you’re trapped and a block is going to fall on you. After defeating the monster you acquire the ability to perform a double jump. The map opens up and instead of going to the next level you have two options. There is a blocked pathway I couldn’t get to because I accidentally missed a gem and couldn’t unlock it, and there’s the other path. Now I don’t know what levels 3-7 had but for some reason the difficulty jumped up by a lot. I’m not talking about enemies, I’m talking about puzzles that involved tough enemies. The bees so far must be my least favorite enemy to face. Even with bouncing your hammer all over the place it’s hard to take them out. I spent almost an hour on a puzzle where I had to step on a flower and bounce my hammer off a wall to hit another flower, which caused it to blow air under me and allow me to get a higher ledge. The geometry part was frustrating, but then you get a section where there ware two bee hives spewing out bees and you have to hit the boxes above you to open the pathway. You can jump down to try to avoid the bees, but it blocks your view of the opening above and if you try to jump back up to kill the bees you’re guaranteed to get hit and die. I tried numerous strategies and ultimately it was just an issue of not throwing the hammer the right angle so it hits everything. Later the bees turn into a moving walkway as you have to jump off of them to go left and right and up to reach higher places. After making it through this very difficult level the demo ends. Despite what you may think, I had fun with the game. The difficulty spiked up pretty quickly, but if you have a mouse and keyboard and play on Steam that puzzles where you have to bounce your hammer off the walls may be a little easier. I wonder if can switch it up and disconnect your controller when you get to those parts so you can use your keyboard and then plug it back in to continue your game. I really like the visuals and the game itself ran very smoothly. The puzzles were frustrating, but fun. I didn’t want to give up on them, because there were unlimited lives. I feel that adds to the ability to spend so much time in one area, not having to worry about eating all your lives and starting the whole level over. There should be a degree of difficulty and this game meets it, but I would start off with the easy difficulty until you get really good with throwing your hammer or else you may get stuck like me in a section for almost an hour. I’m not sure what the price is going to be, but if you play the demo and really like it then it really shouldn’t matter. Kept you waiting , huh ? I know , I know . Not exactly endearing myself to the anyone , but that's fine . Still it has been a few days since my last incoherent essay regarding whatever topic wormed itself into my brain . So ladies and germs , I came today to rectify that situation . Before that , let's hear a word from our public relations department . Personally , I believe in the idea that as fans , we should strive to keep Alex's dream even after his tragic death in June and this is my contribution to that effort . So a couple of days ago , I was reading through a couple of Thor comics and eventually I make my way to Jason Aaron's work , specifically his run of the Mighty Thor when Jane Foster was the one wielding the hammer . At some point I get to the War Thor business , when Volstagg picked up the displaced hammer of Ultimate Comics Thor and became the God of the Bloodstorm , then my mental gears start churning . Out of curiosity I started looking for the character's concept art and then it all made sense . For those of you not convinced or too unmotivated to open your search engine of choice , here is a photo of the design .

To me at least it kinda screamed Technoblade , but then I started thinking to myself what could be done to this design in order to make it into a fitting tribute to the Blood God . Now , I am not an artist nor do I claim I can draw anything even remotely to the level needed to do both the original design and the idea I have in my head any justice , so I will also add some bits and pieces that came out as close as possible to what I intended .

Obviously I went for the Pigglin Technoblade since that's the one that the version of the titular character that I personally enjoy . What isn't quite obvious however to the casual reader is the weird robot arm sketch . This is my attempt to immortalise Alex's struggle against cancer , something many people this day and age have to deal it . It was mentioned that he would have been amputated if the doctors didn't find an alternative treatment plan and it seemed like something that I needed to add . It is just my personal preference and if people want to not avoid it , then I have nothing against them since I understand it might be a sensitive topic . Anyways , I also used a hoofed hand design in order to lean into the hog design and I added the small horns from Old King Thor's helmet design in order to represent Technoblade's crown .

Normally , I would have avoided posting this whole affair if not for one key detail . Today some representatives from the Foundation Kika came by my housing complex and they went door by door in order to convince people to sign up for a charity event that was happening tonight . It is meant to fund the continued efforts of combating cancer in children . The fact that these kids have to go through such ordeals and the very likely possibility that they might not make it even to their twenties just made me decide to push my inhibitions aside and write this . Screw cancer . What better way to celebrate Technoblade's existence than to dedicate my idea today to a noble cause . I am doing my part . If you are curious , I also added a hyperlink to their site , where details regarding next year's charity marathon are explained . Fair warning , the site is in Dutch , as such you should probably keep Google Translate nearby .

Anyways , to end this sales pitch , I am willing to part with the idea in the hopes that someone , someday will create something worthy out of my ramblings . Today's offer is on the house . Cheers .

My (belated) unfiltered first thoughts on Thor 4: The Fourth Thor ("Love and Thunder")

Don't expect these to be smart or organized, they are literally just my immediate thoughts about the movie, scribbled down right when they popped into my head. (spoiler alert, obviously)

MOON KNIGHT IS IN THE MARVEL OPENING TITLE!!!!!

Seems these days Marvel is on a bit of a streak where they open their movies/shows with a painfully personal snapshot of the villain, and I'm very much on board with it

Over the course of three Thor movies, Darcy went from being Jane's annoying intern to her best friend, that's beautiful

The Asgardian kids watching the battle excitedly from their rooms is the cutest, it makes me think of how Thor and Loki probably did the same thing when they were little

I wish the New Asgardian kids had more traditional Asgardian culture about them. When I saw them wearing human clothes I assumed they would at least have Asgardian decor and stuff in their homes, but then when it showed the kids' rooms they seemed to just look like the average human child's bedroom. I hope they're not over-assimilating and losing their roots

I still don't get how Jane is worthy of Mjolnir; she just wanted it to save her own health. Understandable, but not exactly heroic

Also, why does it make her turn blonde?

When Gorr took the kids, I thought he might be trying to "save" them in some misguided way, maybe because he thought it would somehow make up for the daughter he wasn't able to save? I thought there was going to be a plot twist where he actually cared about all children because they remind him of his daughter, and that would turn out to be a "fatal flaw" in some way - that would have been interesting

Greek gods are canon in the MCU? And Thor somehow knew about and studied them at some point? OHOHOHOHOHOHO the fanfic possibilities are ENDLESS

Wait, how did Thor learn about Zeus? When he was a child on Asgard, or later when he first went down to Earth? If the former, would that make the gods of the various ancient cultures contemporaries?

Jane called Val'kyrie "Your Highness," don't you mean MAJESTY?! Show some damn respect, Jane, geez

When Korg fell apart I almost say HOLY SHIT out loud (so much for "perishable rock")

I'd been waiting the whole movie for Sweet Child O' Mine, and I was NOT disappointed, that was fucking epic

I'm actually really digging the main conflict of this movie being about finding a balance between religious faith and science. I don't think this is a topic Marvel has dealt with in such a big way before.

The normal moviegoer in me really wants to enjoy watching an army of superpowered children fighting with Thor, but the education major in me can't get past the fact that it's literally child abuse

Jane turning slowly to face Mjolinir in her hospital bed was the sexiest moment in this whole film

So, was Eternity supposed to look like a cheap laptop sticker you'd buy at a yoga studio, or did the special effects team just blow their entire budget before they got around to that scene?

Is that lady with Axel supposed to be Heimdall's wife? Did he have a wife this whole time? Wasn't he always on constant vigil? When would he have taken the time off to have a wife and baby?

DAD!THOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't quite understand how Gorr's daughter came back? He exchanged his life for hers somehow? How is she "born from the powers of Eternity?"

Okay, but when it the little girl going to meet Uncle Loki, because PUH LEASE.

That whole movie and I didn't realize Zeus was played by Russell Crowe until the credits. Not sure if that's a compliment to Crowe's acting or an insult to my intelligence

Omg Hercules is Roy from Tad Lasso (and yes, I did recognize him from his chest hair before his face) This is too good.
