Just A Little Longer - Sigtryggr x Stiorra
Tumblr media
The sun began to rise in the lands of Jorvik. King Sigtryggr stirred in his sleep knowing he would need to awake soon. There was much to do, even after being there for over a year. He had conquered more than he ever thought was possible, but his one thing he thanked the Gods for most laid beside him.
Stiorra.
His Queen.
She laid in his arms, her head on his chest. He could hear her soft breathing as she slept. He ran his fingertips alongside her naked back, kissing the top of her head. They had only been married a few months, but the love he had in his heart overwhelmed him. He knew falling in love was a risk. She could be used against him or harmed because of him. But he would do everything in his power to protect her.
He always had, ever since they met in Winchester. Storria opened her eyes, rubbing them as she took in her whereabouts. She glanced up at her husband.
“Mm, morning already?” she groaned.
“Aye, it is my love,” he said, leaning down to kiss her.
She smiled against his lips, placing her hand on his cheek.
“The servants will be in, soon,” she whispered.
“I know,” he said, bringing his lips down to her neck. “But just a little longer, yeah?”
She giggled as he rolled over on top of her. She ran her hand on his forearm. She never planned for this to be her life. To ever be someone’s wife, but that’s the difference. She wasn’t just someone’s wife, she was Sigtryggr’s wife.
And that brought every reward one could want to her.
“What are you thinking about?” he whispered.
Stiorra blushed, turning her head with a laugh, “Nothing.”
“What? Tell me,” he laughed.
“It is nothing, I swear,” she said.
“Oh, really?” he smirked.
Sigtryggr brought his hands down to her sides, tickling her. A hardy laugh left her throat as she squirmed away from him.
“Stop it!” she giggled.
“Tell me and I will stop,” he smirked.
She laughed, shaking her head, “Fine, fine. I will tell you.”
He stopped, but his hands remained at her side. Stiorra took a moment, catching her breath before looking at her husband.
“I was thinking about how happy I am here with you and that I could not imagine my life without you,” she whispered.
Sigtryggr’s lips broke out into a smile before pressing his lips against hers. She wrapped her arms around his neck, her fingers entwining into his hair. Footsteps could be heard coming into their room, but neither of them paid any attention.
“Oh, uh, I am sorry, forgive me,” the servant blushed at the doorway.
Stiorra hid her face with her hands as Sigtryggr laughed. He kissed her forehead before glancing over at the servant. “The Queen and I will be a little longer this morning. We will be down for our morning feast when we are ready.”
“Yes, my lord,” she said before rushing back down.
“You did not just do that!” She laughed.
“What? Now, we have a few more moments without interruption,” he said. “Shall we continue, my love?”
Stiorra smiled, placing her hand on his cheek, “Well since we have the time,” she smirked.
He smiled, lowering his lips back down to meet her own, reveling in sharing this moment with his wife.

Half Dane
Tumblr media
When I’ve heard Sigtryggr Ivarsson was going to make an appearance this season, I literally squealed. After years writing about him (mainly baby and toddler Sigtryggr) and his father, I would finally see him on-screen... and it was glorious. I even skipped to the final episodes to see the pretty face of that cunning sweetheart. In any case, I started writing a short story about him and Stiorra. I was torn between picking one of my original characters (Emer, Moyra) as his mother, or leaving it to the imagination. I definitely see Sigtryggr’s mother as a Christian and I’ll show why in the next installment. For now only the opening.
Note: As many people probably haven’t finished the 4th season, I won’t tag to avoid giving spoilers. In this piece, I’ll try to explore more of the gaps between the scenes, but I’ll probably write a few moments we have seen on-screen, but focused on his perspective.
News of the slaughter in Tettenhall reached his ears as Sigtryggr and his men filled their ship with supplies to sail away from the only home they have ever known.
“It is said the Welsh claimed all the spoils for helping the Saxons,” the merchant smirked to Sigtryggr, “even slaves.”
 “Slaves?”
“One of the army’s leaders no less,” Sigtryggr noticed Rorik’s discomfort as he glanced at the ground.
“Cnut? My cousin?” Sygtryggr clenched his fists, trying to control the fury that threatened to overwhelm his senses as he remembered how the massacre of his people could have been prevented if Cnut had answered his calling.
“I do not know if your cousin was among the fallen, but I know his woman is being tortured by King Hywel’s brother. I have been at his court to trade some of the silver he brought with him after Tettenhall.”
“His woman?” Sigtryggr shook his head, recalling Cnut had left his wife and children to raid and probably claimed another woman.
 A Saxon concubine.
 “A warrior named Brida.”
“A Dane.” Sigtryggr tilted his head, deep in thoughts.
“Tell me about the defenses of this stronghold,” Sigtryggr smirked, placing his hand on the merchant’s shoulder.
“As I was leaving, King Hywel said he would go on a pilgrimage.” Rorik winked.
“Seeking the forgiveness of his God for spilling blood,” Sigtryggr laughed, “Our Gods are revered in blood, while they talk about love and yet kill women and children.”
“King Hywel took many of his warriors with him.”
“A stronghold with silver and food for the taking.”
 Rorik nodded, “Will you return?”
“We will rest and grow stronger.” Sigtryggr’s nostrils flared as if he could still smell the smoke of the burned settlement, “and when the Irish think they are safe, we will strike and take what is ours.”

Goodnight, My Love - Sigtryggr x Stiorra
Tumblr media
Stiorra’s muscles ached in her back as the day’s work caught up with her. Every day the city was improving and more people were coming to Jorvik. Seeing their people happy and living in peace made the long days worth it. Her belly was full from the night’s feast and now the bed was calling her name.
But first, her body called for a hot bath. The serving women had heated water and poured it into the tub. She undressed and submerged herself in the water. She sighed with relief as her muscles loosened and relaxed. She closed her eyes, letting herself fully relax.
Sigtryggr finished the remainder of his ale before bidding a goodnight to Wolland. He walked up the stairs to the room he shared with his wife. He still hadn’t gotten used to saying that, even after being married to Stiorra for almost a year. When he walked into the room, he saw her enjoying a bath.
He smiled, “How is the water?”
“Perfect,” she smiled.
“Mind if I join you?” he asked, kneeling down in front of the tub.
“I’d thought you would never ask,” she smirked.
Letting out a laugh, he stands up and walks over to the dresser. He removes his rings, placing them on the table and finishes undressing the rest of his clothing. He squeezes into the water, behind his wife, wrapping his arms around her. He kisses the top of her head when she leans against him.
“You are right, this is perfect,” he laughed. “We should do this more often.”
Stiorra nodded.
“How was your talk with Wolland?” She asked.
“It went well,” he nodded. “We’ve decided to send a small group of men to check in with our men at the borders.”
Stiorra nodded, “Will you go with them?”
“Not this time,” he said. “I’d much rather spend the day with my wife.”
She laughed, “But we have work that must be done.”
“Aye, we do,” he whispered. “But it is nothing that cannot wait.”
She turned her head to look at him before pressing her lips against his. He smiled into the kiss, pulling her closer to him. Once the water turns cold, the two get out and dry off. Stiorra walked over towards the window, looking out of the city in the moonlight. Sigtryggr wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, placing his chin on her shoulder.
“Thank you,” he whispered.
“For what?” she asked.
“For coming with me. For being by my side through all of this. For creating a peaceful land for our people,” he whispered.
She smiled, leaning into him, “You know I never pictured this life for me, but now that I am here with you, I would not want another life.”
“I love you,” he whispered, looking into her eyes.
She placed her hands on either side of his cheeks, “And I love you.”
He smiled, pulling her closer to him for a kiss, “Come, we should head to bed,” he whispered, lifting her up.
Stiorra lets out a small laugh as he carries her towards their bed. They both lay down, arms wrapped around the other.
“Goodnight, my love,” she whispered, laying her head on his chest.
“Goodnight, my Queen,” he smiled, kissing her head and closing his eyes.

“And I Am Your Wife - Sigtryggr x Stiorra
Tumblr media
**Decided we needed a longer scene of Sigtryggr and Stiorra discussing Rognvaldr’s fate.
**
Stiorra pokes at the food on her plate as she replays the events of the day. Flashbacks of her people being slaughtered consume her. Brida will pay for what she has done, but for now her brother in law must pay for his betrayal. They had put him to a trial. Stiorra hoped the Gods would not forgive him and that he would be dead by now, but of course he had passed.
They still needed to see if his burned flesh would heal, which is why he remained outside of the city.
“There is no honor in him freezing to death,” Sigtryggr says, staring out at his shivering brother.
Stiorra shakes her head, “There is no honor in what he did to us and yet you would forgive him.”
“The Gods have forgiven him,” Sigtryggr states. “He- He passed their trial. He must be in their favor.”
Stiorra slams her fork onto the table, “If his flesh begins to heal, then we can talk about allowing him back into the city.”
“Listen to me!” Sigtryggr says, looking at her. “He is my brother!”
“And I am your wife!” She strikes back. “His fate is set. It’s in the hands of the Gods now. He will die or he will survive. We will not know until his hands are unbound.”
Stiorra gets up from her chair, walks past her husband, and out of the bedroom. Sigtryggr sighs, running his hand over his face. He hated fighting with his wife. It was something that happened rarely in their ten years of marriage. But the one topic they always were divided on was that of his brother.
Rognvaldr was his only blood left in the world. They were bonded no matter what. His brother’s actions cost him the lives of his people and almost cost him the life of his wife. He was angry. He was hurt. But he also could not bring himself to kill his own brother. However, it was this tenderness towards his brother that caused him to fall into his trap.
Stiorra had warned him. Had tried to send his brother on his way, but he did not. And now he was left with one of the biggest decisions of his life.
**
Later that night, Stiorra and Sigtryggr laid in their bed, silently staring up at the ceiling. Neither of them could sleep between what had happened and because of their argument earlier in the night.
“Stiorra,” Sigtryggr whispers, looking over at his wife.
She turns to look at him, “Hm?”
He takes her hand in his, bringing it up to his lips, “I am sorry,” he whispers.
She sighs, “I know this is not an easy decision for you. I wish you did not have to make this choice. But-”
“But he betrayed my trust,” he finishes. “He is responsible for many of our people being slaughtered. I could have lost you-”
“I am here,” she whispers, touching his cheek. “I am safe.”
“This is my fault,” he says. “All of it-”
“Do not,” she says, “Do not blame yourself for his actions.”
Stiorra sits up, looking down at her husband, “I know I do not make it easy for you. My dislike for your brother. But I see what he does to you. He takes advantage of your love for him. I want to protect you from that.”
His lips curl into a smile, “And here I thought I was the one to protect you.”
“We protect each other,” she smiles.
Sigtryggr places his forehead against Stiorra’s. She places her hand on his cheeks.
“I love you,” she whispers. “And I do not want this to burden you any longer. I will support you in whatever decision you decide to make.”
“Are you sure?” He asks.
She laughs, “I may make my dislike known for a time, if need be, but I will honor whatever you decide. I will not be the reason you fall into darkness.”
“With you by my side, my queen? I could never,” he whispers.
Smiling, she presses her lips against his in a kiss. He wraps his arms around her waist, pulling her closer to him.
Despite the horrific events over the last few days, the remaining tough decisions they would face, as long as they were together, they would get through anything.

if you have any more scenes you would like me to do, please let me know! :)

Building Our Town - Sigtryggr x Stiorra (Part 1)
Tumblr media
Takes place when Sigtryggr and Stiorra arrive to Eoforwic after leaving Winchester and them growing Jorvik for their people.
**
Stiorra and Sigtryggr had been in the lands of Eoforwic for only a few days. There was so much to be done to restore the land it was overwhelming. She knew it wouldn’t happen overnight, but she also felt like nothing would ever change no matter what they did or how hard they worked.
She and Sigtryggr, along with some of his men, were about to head out on a journey around the lands to see where their borders were and where they would need to place men for protection. Stiorra packed food and other items they would need for the trip. Sigtryggr and her hadn’t had much time together since their arrival. He had been busy making plans. She understood there was much to do, but she couldn’t help but wonder if maybe he had regretted her coming here.
Even during her time in Winchester, she never felt alone, but since being here she felt the absence of her family. Stiorra brought out the basket and bags, handing them to the men and attaching them to her own horse. Sigtryggr came out, addressed his men, and climbed onto his own horse. Stiorra gave him a small smile, but he never glanced her way. She kicked her heels into the horse and rode on behind him.
The ride was mostly quiet besides the chatter of the men behind her. So, she made sure to take in the scenery of the lands. The lands that belonged to the Danes. She tried to imagine what it would be like in a year or ten. It wouldn’t be a Winchester or even a Merica, but it would be theirs. A land for their people to live freely. To raise their families for generations.
A land of peace.
Sigtryggr stopped just ahead.
“We build a camp and rest for the night,” he said, jumping down from his horse.
Stiorra got off of her’s, along with the rest of the men. They tied their horses around the trees before building their camp. Stiorra took it upon herself to gather branches for the fires. Once she had a handful, she made her way back towards the camp when she heard some of the men talking.
“I cannot believe he brought the Dane-Slayer’s daughter,” they said. “We should have killed him like Brida wanted. He has killed enough of our kin and now we have his daughter among us.”
“Sigtryggr is fond of her,” the other said. “But as most men do, I am sure he will grow tired of her and send her back to the Dane-Slayer. She’s not even a real Dane.”
Stiorra gripped the sticks in her hand as she listened to their conversation.
“Daneland is for Danes. Sigtryggr said so himself, perhaps we should remind him of this fact,” they said.
Stiorra stepped out into the camp, “And perhaps someone should remind the two of you, that Brida was born a Saxon. She has no Dane bloodline, yet the Danes have accepted her. Ragnar the Younger took her as a wife. Cnut took her as a lover and gave her his child. So, please continue about how I am not a Dane and that I do not belong in Daneland. My mother was a Dane. Her brother was a King of the Danes.”
“And what of you? Hm?” She asked.
One of the men squinted their eyes at her, “You have no right to talk to us like that. You are the daughter of a killer of Danes! You are the daughter of our enemy.”
“An enemy who you are now at peace with,” she pointed out.
“Is there a problem here?” Sigtryggr appeared, crossing his arms.
Stiorra raised her eyebrows at the men, who remained silent.
“So, I thought,” Sigtryggr said before walking back to the main part of the camp.
Stiorra felt her heart drop at him leaving. The men started working on their tents once again, ignoring her. She walked to the middle of the camp, dropping the branches down, and over to her own area. Everything she pictured her life to be here had been a fantasy and she began to have doubt it would ever come true.
**
The sun had set and the darkness of night took over. The light of the moon and the embers of the fire lit up the camp. The men were laughing and singing as they stuffed their faces with varying meats and cheeses. Stiorra pushed her food around, not feeling very hungry at the moment. She kept replaying the words of the two men from earlier.
Even though she stood up for herself, she wondered if any of their words were true. More specifically what they said about Sigtryggr. Would he grow tired of her? She had witnessed such happening with men, hell her own father had fallen in and out of love many times in his lifetime. This is why she never wanted to marry. She didn’t want to give her heart to someone, only for them to break in return. She saw what her father went through after the loss of her mother. How it pains him now to not be able to with Aelfflaed. She refused to allow that to happen to her.
Yet, she couldn’t refuse what she felt for Sigtryggr. Or at least what she thought she felt. Maybe it was more of a situational thing. He had been the only one to see her in Winchester. They spent many moments together, but what if that was all he wanted. What if he used her to gain information about her father? About England and the Saxons? Much of what they talked about had been about those things and now he was the King of Jorvik.
She could not take it anymore. She would not take it anymore. She was not going to sit around and wait for him to just discard her. She would not go running back to her father. She threw her plate down on the floor, spilling the remainder of food onto the Earth. Stiorra walked over to where Sigtryggr was speaking with his men. She cleared her throat, causing them all to look at her.
“I need to speak with you,” she said, firmly staring straight at Sigtryggr.
“Alone,” she added.
Sigtrygrr looked at his men, “Leave us be,” he nodded.
The men grumbled, getting up from their seats and walking over to join the others.
“Is something wrong?” He asked, once they were alone.
Stiorra looked at him, her eyes squinted in frustration, “Why am I here?”
He tilted his head in confusion, “What do you mean?”
“Why did you really bring me here?” She asked. “To Daneland with you?”
“Stiorra,” he shook his head. “I do not understand. You wanted to come here. So I brought you.”
“And that is all?” She asked. “You once asked me if I wanted to go to Daneland just to go or if I wanted to go with you. I told you what I wanted, but I guess I should have asked you what you wanted.”
His gaze fell on the men in the distance. They were all looking at them. Sigtryggr sighed, getting up and pulling Stiorra out from their gaze. Stiorra pulled her arm from his grasp and he held his hands up in defense.
“Was I just a pawn in your game?” She asked. “Someone to seek information from? And now that you got what you wanted, I am of no use to you any longer.”
“You are not a pawn in any game,” he said. “You never were and you never will be.”
“I will admit, when I found out who you were, I was interested in learning about your father and the Saxons,” he said. “But I never just wanted you for information.”
“Then what do you want from me?” She snapped. “You have not spoken to me in days. Your men do not want me here. I have no family. I know no one-”
“You have me,” he whispered, taking her hands in his. “I know I have been distant and I am sorry.”
“I have had to be strong all my life,” she whispered. “My mother left me. We were taken from my father. I have been left behind all my life. I refuse to allow it to happen again.”
Sigtryggr placed his forehead against hers, “I will never leave you. I swear to you that.”
Stiorra looked into his eyes, squeezing his hand as the worry inside of her went away.

The Siege of Winchester - Sigtryggr x Stiorra (Part 1)
Tumblr media
*Set during the time frame of Sigtryggr’s taking of Winchester and meeting Stiorra during her captivity.
**
Stiorra knew as soon as she was taken from her father, she would need to conceal her identity. She loved her father. She learned so much from him, but he was known as the Dane-Slayer. And she would soon find herself held captive by a bunch of Danes. She needed to buy herself some time until her father and his men could save her and Winchester.
Lady Aelswith prayed next to her, Stiorra rolled her eyes. Her fingers wrapped around her necklace thinking of her plan. All she knew at this moment in time was the fact she was headed to Winchester that had been taken under siege by a Dane named Sigtryggr.
Apparently he was young, cunning, and had a plan to rule all Danes. But he would have to win first. He may have taken Winchester, but he had yet to fight against her father and his men. He would never allow Winchester to be taken from the Saxons.
Upon arriving just outside the gates, Stiorra took in the sight of what used to be her home. Spikes with the heads of Saxon’s was the first thing she noticed. Along with the new additions of runes and an altar.
At least she would be among her people, she thought.
“I get to Winchester at last,” she mumbled.
“Do not look upon it,” Lady Aelswith said. “It is not the place I left. Be under no illusion. They will murder us. So, I suggest you say your prayers and thank the lord for the lives you lead.”
Stiorra scoffed, “I will not. I am not a Christian.”
The cart stopped in front of the palace. Lady Aelswith, Stiorra, and Athelstan are pulled off and taken inside. Stiorra noticed a woman sitting in the large chair next to a young man. His brown hair was long and he wore black, woven armor with Thor’s hammer around his neck.
“Lady Aelswith,” Brida smiled. “I am so happy to see your family reunited.”
“I want to speak with whoever leads you,” the Queen responded.
“I lead here,” Brida answered.
“I mean, the man in charge of this,” Lady Aelswith rephrased.
Brida chuckled before spitting on the Queen, “Do not insult me.”
“I am not the one using insults,” Lady Aelswith said.
Stiorra turned her gaze to the woman Lady Aelswith spoke with. She seemed familiar. Brida. She remembered Haesten mentioning a woman named Brida joining alongside Sigtryggr. Brida. She knew that name. It was the woman from her father’s past. She had been taken from England and they grew up with Ragnar and the Danes. Brida never forgot the things my father has done for the Saxons and to the Danes.
“Have her servant girl feed her shit,” Brida snapped.
Stiorra glanced up. She was no longer lost in her thoughts. Brida believed her to be a servant girl. Good.
“Torture me by all means,” Lady Aelswith said. “But you must know she and the boy are both Danes. They were taken, as slaves, after our victory at Tettanhall. If you value your people, take them back.”
Stiorra felt a gaze on her. The man sat behind Brida. She assumed him to be Sigtryggr. The Dane who captured Winchester. Brida breaks Stiorra’s eye contact with him, as she stands in front of her.
“Who is Sjorn?” Brida asked.
“She is half Dane at most,” Brida declared. “The monk boy not at all.”
“Half dane is enough,” Sigtryggr said. “Hold the woman separately.”
“She’s Uhtred’s daughter. I recognize her” a voice calls out. “We met in Mercia when my sister betrayed me.”
“I’ve never seen you before!” Stiorra shouted.
Brida looked her up and down, “Of course, she has his look. And she is cunning like him.”
Stiorra glared at Brida.
“Find Uhtred. Send him her head,” Brida ordered.
“NO!” Lady Aelswith shouted, reaching towards Stiorra
“Do it. It will bring him. It will bring them all and the end will begin,” Brida said, walking over to the queen.
“What? I thought you welcomed the fire,” she whispered, her face inches from Lady Aelswith.
Sigtryggr got up from his seat, walking towards the captives. “Put the Queen and the others back where they keep their dead king. She comes with me.”
Stiorra grunted when a guard took her by the neck, spinning her on her heels, and forcing her to the room. Sigtryggr followed behind them.
**
Stiorra is thrown into a large room. It was Alfred's library. There’s a long table filled with books and the sunlight shone in through the window. The door was slammed shut and locked behind her. She headed straight for the window, looking for an escape. There’s no way she’d be able to get free without breaking the glass. That would draw too much attention. She stopped on the floor, listening for any sign of a hidden passageway.
She sighed defeated realizing there was no way out. She sat at the table, staring at the glass in front of her. She didn’t know what Sigtryggr wanted with her, but it couldn’t be good. The door opened up behind her and she felt the presence of someone. Instinctively, she slammed the glass against the table, shattering it. Stiorra held the broken glass against her cheek, ready to slice it into her flesh.
“Do not,” a husky voice whispered.
Stiorra’s hand shook as she held the glass closer to her face, her breathing growing heavier.
Sigtryggr stood in front of her, holding his hands up as he looked at her, “I will not harm you. Do not. I only wish to speak with you. Answer me truthfully and I will treat you kindly.”
“I’ve heard of men’s kindness and I do not want it,” Stiorra spat her grip tightening onto the glass.
“I’m the Dane who took Winchester,” Sigtryggr said. “If I wanted to hump a woman, I would not need to use force.”
Stiorra looked at Sigtryggr. She shouldn’t trust him. He was looking to kill her father. He was a man and didn’t all men wish to show their power against a woman. Especially one they were holding against her will. But looking into his eyes, she could feel he was different. He was someone she could trust. Lowering the glass from her cheek, Sigtryggr takes it out of her hand and places it on the table.
“Who was your mother?” He asked.
“Gisela, sister of Guthred of Northumbria,” she answered.
“Oh, so we share the same ancestors,” he noted.
“Yet we are not the same,” Stiorra said.
“And where is your home?” Sigtryggr asked.
“Bebbanburg,” she responded.
“A young woman with lands in the north,” he said, amused.
“Our lands were stolen, but my father will see them restored,” she said.
Sigtryggr watched her from afar. She had her back turned to him, refusing to face him. He was intrigued by her. Not just because she was the Dane-Slayer’s daughter or that she was  both a Dane and a Saxon. No, there was something else. Something more. Something he would not admit to himself, not yet.
“Hm, so, are you one of us, or one of them?” he asked.
“I’m both! As are many living here, two generations, three. This foolishness of who is Saxon and who is Dane!,” Stiorra said.
“When one side seeks to destroy the other, you must choose to survive,” Sigtryggr told her.
“Well, I refuse. It’s a game for old men,” Stiorra shook her head. “I won’t be held to the feuds from years ago. I have no fight with either side and I will not choose. It would dishonor either my father or my mother.”
Sigtryggr smiled, “Well, then, I would say this love for honor makes you a Dane. The Saxon cares only for the obedience of their God.”
Stiorra rolled her eyes, “Then you know nothing of Saxons. They treasure honor just as much as you do.”
“Yet they say their God is the god of peace,” he smirked.
“Do you also believe them when they say their God came back from the dead?” Stiorra asked.
Sigtryggr laughed. Getting up from his spot across the room, he walked closer towards her. He took a seat next to her, but still far enough away to keep his distance.
“Do you think there could be peace between Saxon and Dane?” he asked, “They are new to me. I wish to understand their ways.”
“Many would like there to be,” she said.
Sigtryggr nodded. He found himself willing her to look at him, but her face remained stoic and straight.
“Tell me about your father, Uhtred,” he said. “Why does he hate us?”
“He doesn’t,” she responded, quickly, spinning her ring around her finger.
“Then why does he kill so many of my kin?” he asked. “Why does he revel in his title Dane-Slayer?”
Stiorra shook her head, “He doesn’t. He hates it,” she said. “You speak like a man who’s never killed.”
Sigtryggr’s lips curl into a smile, “Oh, I have killed, but only Christians. I would never betray my people.”
“He’s never betrayed anyone,” she said, looking at him. “He was often torn between those who loved him like their own and those who were his blood.”
Sigtryggr held her gaze.
“My mother was a Dane and he loved her,” she continued. “If Uhtred were intent on destroying the Danes, to clean us from the land, why am I here to speak of it?”
**
Sigtryggr sat outside on the palace walls, looking out into the city of Winchester while sipping ale. He still couldn’t believe the Gods had favored him enough to siege this town. How so many Danes before him tried and failed, yet he was able to make it happen. But perhaps the Gods had a new fate for him now, one that began here.
Stiorra.
He had been with women before. That was nothing new. But being around her. Smelling her scent and hearing about her thoughts, her life. It felt different. He never planned for a wife believing it made one weak. A wife brought children, which brought collateral. Pieces of a puzzle to allow enemies to bargain with. He still didn’t wish for a wife, but he also could not imagine leaving Winchester without Stiorra. And he only just met her.
“There you are,” one of Sigtryggr’s men said from behind.
“Ah, Harald,” Sigtryggar held out his ale cup. “Is there something I am needed for?”
“Not at the moment,” Harald answered. “But, the men and I… we wondered…”
“Yes?” Sigtryggr asked.
“What is your plan for the Dane-Slayer’s daughter?” he asked.
Sigtryggr’s hands turned white around the ale cup, “Why do you need to know?”
Harald sighed, “It is Brida. She is determined that the only way to get Uhtred here is by telling him we have his daughter. She wants her head.”
“She can want it all she wants,” Sigtryggr said. “But she will not have it”
Harald looked at him, “What is she your whore now? Your little hump thing? Is that why we can’t send her head to the Dane-Slayer?”
Sigtryggr threw his cup down, spilling the remaining ale on the ground. He grabbed Harald by his armor, lifting him up off the ground.
“What did you call her?” He spat. “Don’t you ever talk about her in that way again?”
Harald looked down at him, his eyes widened.
“And tell Brida to keep her mouth shut. I run this city now and we do things my way,” Sigtryggr glared. “Do you understand?”
“Y-yes, Sigtryggr,” Harald shook in his grasp.
The redness that took over Sigtryggr lessened as he realized what he was doing. His hands release Harald in a flash.
“You may go,” Sigtyrggr waved his hand, sending Harald on his way.
Sigtryggr’s chest began to tighten as his heart began to race. He leaned against the banister, his fingers gripping the stone below. His breathing quickened and he felt hot and sweaty. The familiar feeling of adrenaline in his veins, but he had only ever felt it before a battle or a raid. Closing his eyes, he let the cool wind caress his face, blowing his hair around in the breeze. He tried steadying his breath, dreaming of his former home, but there was only one thing he saw.
Stiorra.
**
And there’s the 1st part and my 1st Sigtryggr & Stiorra fanfiction. Not sure how many parts this will be, so we’ll see where this goes. Also, I plan on including the scenes from the show as well as other ideas to fill in the gaps, so if you have anything special you would like me to add. Please let me know. :)

The Siege of Winchester - Sigtryggr x Stiorra (Part 5)
Tumblr media
Part 1     Part 2      Part 3     Part 4
**
Stiorra remained in the reading room, awaiting what was to come next. She would be leaving Winchester with Sigtryggr. A month ago, she sat in this very room, worried about what would be done to her by the same man. If someone would have told her Sigtryggr was her fate, she would have laughed. But now, she couldn’t imagine another fate.
The door opened and she didn’t bother looking to see who it was. They placed a cup next to her and she quickly took it. After sipping from the cup, she glanced up, noticing they had yet to say anything.
Her face broke into a smile, seeing her father alive and standing there. He smiled, wrapping his arms around you.
“I thought I’d lost you,” he whispered.
“I’ll miss you,” she whispered back.
Pulling away, he looked at her, “Why?”
“When I leave,” she answered.
“I’ve said no,” he says, touching her cheek.
“But I-I’m willing to go,” she whispered, confused.
“With Sigtryggr?” He asked.
“But I want you with me in Coccham,” he added.
Stiorra sighed, “There’s nothing for me in Coccham.”
“It’s the chance for us to be one family,” Uhtred said.
“It’s not what either of us wants,” she shook her head. “You’d like for it to be true, but it’s not.”
“Your men are your family,” she added.
“I want my children with me,” he said.
“Maybe in Bebbanburg,” she sighed. “Maybe then, but you’re not destined to be the Lord of Coccham any more than I’m meant to live a small life there.”
Uhtred sighed, turning away.
“We’re wanders, father,” Stiorra said. “We follow where the Gods lead us and the Gods are sending me to Daneland.”
“Let me go,” she pleads. “For the sake of Saxons…”
“I have sacrificed enough for them,” Uhtred exclaimed.
“Well, I have sacrificed nothing,” she said.
“Please! I want to live amongst my mother’s people,” she pleaded. “To… to find the part of myself that died when she was taken from me.”
“Besides,” she whispered. “Sigtryggr… is gentle.”
Uhtred turned around quickly, looking concerned.
“He’s a man of honor!” She defended.
Uhtred sighed, realizing what his daughter was truly saying, “You are mine to take care of. For too long you’ve had nothing from me.”
Stiorra shook her head, “I’ve had everything from you. Your blood is within me and has made me a restless spirit.”
She walked over to her father,” Please give me a chance to live as you do, to follow a path without having certainty of where it’s going to end.”
“Let me go,” she whispered.
**
Wow. This was really happening. Her father had agreed. She would be leaving Winchester and England behind. Along with everyone she had ever known. She’d be lying if she said she wasn’t nervous about what lay ahead and if she would ever see her loved ones again. There was a knock on the door and she expected it to be Sigtryggr, but it wasn’t.
“Sigtryggr is ready,” the dane said.
She nodded, giving one last look to the room that started it all. Taking a deep breath, she followed the Dane outside. As she followed, she looked around taking in the site of her childhood. And that’s when she saw him.
He stood by a group of horses, watching and waiting for her.
“I see your father agreed,” he said.
She nodded, “He did… It took some convincing, but he wants me to be happy.”
“And you believe Daneland will bring you happiness?” He asked.
“I do,” she nodded.
“You are sure you want to do this?” he whispered.
Smiling, she placed her hand on his arm ring, “Sigtryggr, I have never been more sure about something in my life before. I am ready to live my life with you in Daneland.”
Sigtryggr looked down at her hand before giving her a smile. Before he could say anything, Young Uhtred, Stiorra’s brother, walked over to say his goodbyes. Sigtryggr looked over their shoulder, catching the eye of Uhtred watching the exchange. He gives a small nod to thank him for saying yes in allowing Stiorra to leave with him.
“Take care, sister,” Young Uhtred said.
“If you ever find yourself in Eoforwic, you know where to find me,” she smiled.
“I will,” he smiled.
He then turned to look at Sigtryggr, “Good luck to you with this one.”
“I will stab you!” Stiorra laughed, hitting his shoulder.
“See what I mean,” he pointed.
Sigtryggr laughed, “May the Gods be with me.”
Stiorra glared at him, but her lips curled into a smile.
“We should go before nightfall,” a Dane said behind us.
Stiorra gave her brother one last hug before he walked away.
“Well, this is it,” Sigtryggr said.
“I guess it is,” she smiled.
The two of them jumped up onto their horses, leaving Winchester behind.
**
Sigtryggr and Stiorra had been riding for a while now. The sun had begun to set, creating an orange hue on everything. For most of the ride, the two stayed silent, but it was a comfortable one. Stiorra finally felt free for the first time in her life and she was overwhelmed at the thought.
“What are you thinking?” Sigtryggr asked.
“Nothing,” she blushed.
“You can talk to me,” he said. “I do not wish there to be any secrets between us.”
Stiorra smiled to herself, looking over at him, “I finally feel like I am living for myself. It does not feel real, but I know that it is.”
“I know what you mean,” he said, offering her a smile.
“How much further until we reach Eoforwic?” She asked. “Should we stop for the night?”
“We should,” he nodded.
Stiorra looked around, “Up there, on the hill. We can use the trees for shelter,” she nodded.
“Hm, good choice,” he said.
Turning to look at her, he smirked.
“What?” She asked.
“Shall we race?” He questioned.
She laughed, “And continue my winning streak? Of course.”
Sigtryggr laughed, “Ready… go!”
Both of them kicked their feet against the horses, picking up their pace.
**
“And once again, I win,” Stiorra smirked, getting down from her horse.
“Have you ever thought perhaps I am letting you win,” Sigtryggr said.
“If that is what you must tell yourself, then so be it,” she said.
Stiorra walked around, looking out at the scenery, “These lands are quite beautiful when there isn’t a battle of men playing games.”
Sigtryggr stood next to her. Their hands softly brushed against the other. They turned to look at the other. This was the first time they had truly been alone together. The rest of Sigtryggr’s men would meet them at Eoforwic when they arrived.
“We should probably gather wood,” he whispered. “Build a fire.”
“Right,” she nodded.
Just before nightfall, they had started a fire. Stiorra rummaged through the bag of food they brought with them from Winchester. She took out cheeses, fruit, and bread. They found a stream nearby for water. They sat in silence as they ate, the crackling of the fire as the only sound.
“What will be the first thing you do when we arrive?” Stiorra asked.
“I will scout the lands with my men,” he said. “And then we rebuild the town for Danes.”
She nodded.
“It will be small,” he said. “But soon families will arrive and we will grow. I wish this to be a great country for our people.”
She smiled, “I am sure with time, it will be.”
Once they were finished eating, they each spread out a blanket onto the ground, laying down. Stiorra looked up at the stars.
“I have missed this,” she whispered. “I had actually dreamed about this moment. Seeing the stars again.”
Sigtryggr turned to look at her, watching her as she gazed up at the stars. A smile was on her and a twinkle in her eye.
“We should get some sleep,” he said. “We must leave at sunrise.”
**
Halfway through the night, Stiorra found herself tossing and turning. The fire had died down, taking its warmth with it. She sighed, wrapping the blanket tighter around her, but it was of no use. Her body was already cold.
“What is it?” Sigtryggr mumbled.
“The fire died,” she sighed. “I am cold.”
Sigtryggr opened his arms, “Then come.”
Stiorra stared at him. She longed to be in his arms, but she didn’t want to seem too eager. Instead of getting up, she simply rolled over until she was next to him.
He laughed.
“What?” she said. “I’m too tired to walk.”
Shaking his head with a smile, he wrapped his arms around her. Stiorra cuddled into his chest and he laid his head on top of hers. She felt his heart beating faster, which in turn made hers do the same. Smiling, she closed her eyes and drifted back off to sleep.
**
Sigtryggr awoke just as the sun began to rise. Confusion hit him when he noticed he was no longer in the palace at Winchester, but on a hill, wrapped in a blanket with Stiorra in his arms. Everything came rushing back to him. The talk with Uhtred, Edward’s attack, bargaining for land, but most importantly Stiorra choosing to leave with him.
He was never one to think about having a wife. He had been young and saw how having a family made one a target, made one weak. But ever since he laid eyes on Stiorra, he knew in his heart, she would make him stronger. She was smart and cunning. She spoke her mind and was determined to not live a life behind a man, but rather beside him.
He did not know what lay ahead for them, but he knew he wished to make her his Queen. He wanted her guidance. Despite her father being the Dane Slayer, he knew his people would follow her, and would listen to her. She was not fearful, and would not back down from a fight if need be. But while he wanted all of those things, he wanted her love the most.
Stiorra stirred beside him, slowly opening her eyes. “Is it morning already?”
“It is,” he nodded.
He brought his hand up to her face, moving a strand of hair out of the way, “We should get going if we wish to arrive by tonight.”
She smiled up at him, with a nod, “But perhaps, we could stay here for just a little longer.”
“I do not see why not,” he smiled, placing his forehead against hers.
**
They had arrived. The moment their horses crossed into the fortress, they were home. It had been damaged due to the battle with Aethelfeld’s army, but it was nothing they could not rebuild. Sigtryggr jumped down from his horse, walking over to help Stiorra down from her own.
He took her hand in his, giving it a squeeze, “We are home.”
**
THE END!
Hope you all enjoyed my take on what I would have liked to happen during the moments we didn’t get to see during the Winchester days. Next up, I will be doing a series that takes place during the massive time jump in the show.
Please do not hesitate to send in any specific moments or ideas you would like to have seen in the show and I will incorporate them. You can request them in an ask.
I will also do separate, smaller scenes, if you would like that as well. Or if you just want to talk all things Sigtryggr and Stiorra, let me know! :)

The Siege of Winchester - Sigtryggr x Stiorra (Part 3)
Tumblr media
Part 1
Part 2
**
A week.
Stiorra had been in Winchester for a week. Other than being kept inside, she no longer disliked her stay. Yes, she missed her father. Yes, she didn’t like being able to roam about. But she would be lying if she said she didn’t enjoy her time spent with Sigtryggr.
Neither one of them mentioned what happened the night of the first attack. But they also didn’t act as though it never happened either. Since that night, Sigtryggr visited Stiorra as much as he could. The two of them spent their time talking of their lives before Winchester. Stiorra learned much about Sigtryggr’s life in Irland, his many adventures, and a little bit about his family.
While Stiorra talked about her father, what he has given up, and about herself.
“And what is it you want to do in life, hm?” Sigtryggr asked.
Stiorra sighed, “I want to be free. I want to live a life of my own choosing. I would like to be more than just the daughter of Uthred. More than a wife. More than a mother.”
“You mean to tell me you do not wish to be married?” Sigtryggr asked. “I thought all women counted down the days,” he laughed.
Turning her head towards him, “I am not most women. I’ve seen what happens to a woman’s freedom when she is pawned off to a man. I will not be someone’s property, who sits at home while they’re off fighting and humping whores in the towns they visit,” she said.
“I refuse to be left behind,” she mumbled. “Not anymore.”
Sigtryggr stared at her, slight adoration in his smile.
“What about you?” She asked.
“What about me?” He asked.
“Do you plan on taking a wife?” she asked. “Do you have a woman waiting for you?”
Sigtryggr noticed she grew uncomfortable with her words. He wondered if there was a deeper meaning behind them. But why would there be if she never wished to be married.
“I do not,” he answered. “I find I am stronger than those who have children and a wife. I have nothing to be used against me.”
“You mean like how you are using me against my father?” She asked.
“I did not mean it in that way,” he said, a softness in his voice.
Stiorra looked away, turning her back against him. With a sigh, Sigtryggr moved closer, sitting beside her.
“I am sorry,” he whispered. “I do not wish to offend you.”
Stiorra laughed, shaking her head.
“What?” he asked.
“I do not understand you,” she laughed. “You are the Dane that took Winchester. You have been on many great adventures. You have slaughtered and you have taken. You have brought fear into the eyes of men yet…”
Sigtryggr looked at her, waiting for her to finish her statement.
“You are different,” she whispered. “With me. You told me you did not wish to harm me. You have fed me. You do not want to offend me…. Why do you treat me in such a way?”
Raising his eyebrow, “Do you wish I did not treat you kindly?” He asked.
“No, I just… I’ve never known such kindness… actual kindness was possible,” she whispered. “Not from a man who was not my father, brother, or close to my father.”
Sigtryggr placed his fingers around the amber necklace she wore, looking into her eyes, “Just because I am a man, and a Dane, does not mean I hold evil in my heart.”
Once again, Stiorra’s heart began to beat faster as she looked into his eyes.
“And if I were ever to take a wife, I would never look at another, nor leave her behind,” he whispered.
“Lord. Edward’s army is attacking yet again,” Hestan barged in.
**
Sigtryggr looked over the ramparts at Edward’s approaching army.
“Someone needs to tell Edward repeating the same actions end in the same result,” Sigtryggr mumbled. “ARCHERS!”
Arrows soared over the walls, striking down the Saxon soldiers headed towards the gates of Winchester.
“Again!” Sigtryggr called.
One by one the Danes took down the King’s Army until they retreated back.
“How long do you plan to hold them off?” Hestan asked. “Perhaps we should attack now.”
Sigtryggr looked over at him, “And why would we do that? We already have Winchester. We have what they want. We are in control.”
Looking back towards Edward’s Army, Sigtryggr nodded, “No, we wait. Soon they will grow desperate and when they do we will be ready.”
Hestan sighed, “And what of the girl?”
“What about her?” He glared.
“I do not wish to overstep,” he said. “But there is talk you have…”
Sigtryggr closed the distance between them, staring at him in the face, “Talk I have what?”
“Forgot why we are here,” he said. “That she is a captive and must be used if need be.”
“And who puts this in your mind, Hestan?” He asked.
“Brida,” he whispered.
Sigtryggr scoffed, “Need I remind you, you serve me. I am the ruler here. I am the Dane who took Winchester. And it is I who will decide when the girl will be used. Not Brida. Not you. Understand?” He shouted.
Hestan clicked his tongue, “Yes, Sigtryggr.”
“Good, now fetch Brida,” he said. “It’s time she be put in her place.”
**
Brida was waiting for him in the throne room. She sat on the chair, twirling her dagger around in her hands. The size of her belly grew daily.
“I was told you wanted to see me?” She asked as soon as he walked inside.
“It seems as though you have forgotten who is truly in charge here,” he stated.
“And it seems as though you have forgotten the reason you are here in the first place,” she smirked.
“If it were not for me and my men, you would still be rotting away as a Saxon slave,” he snapped.
Brida jumped up from her chair, “We are on the same side! We both want the Dane Slayer dead. We both want Saxons to suffer.”
“No!” Sigtryggr yelled. “You want the Dane Slayer dead because of his betrayal to you. I want him dead because he has killed our people. We are not the same.”
“I am the leader! These are my men, “ he snapped. “They do what I say. Not you. And if you so much as go behind my back again, I will not hesitate to kill you.”
Brida ran over, pushing him, “You stupid child! You know nothing of what I have endured. What our people have suffered here! You dishonor our greatest warriors and now you act as if you know all.”
Sigtryggr removed her hands from him, “And you act only in the past. Continue and you will be left there as well.”
He turned to leave, when Brida spat at him, “It is the girl is it not? Uthred’s Daughter.”
He stopped, frozen in place, but refused to turn around. His hand clenched into a fist.
“She is playing you. She is her father’s daughter, “she said. “Do not fall for it or else you will lose everything. And shall it come to that, I will have her head, I swear to The Gods.”
“I’d love to see you try,” he responded, glancing back at her before walking away.
**
Stiorra laid on the bench in the reading room, staring up at the ceiling. She missed looking up and seeing the stars at night, feeling the breeze against her cheeks. She closed her eyes, picturing she was back home, with her mother. She’d never forgotten her nor would she ever. She wondered what her life would have been like had her mother lived.
Would she have felt more like a Dane? She never wanted to deny either part of herself, just like her father. But there was so much she wished her mother was able to teach her about her people. She thought about what it would be like to live amongst the Danes instead of Saxons. She wondered if there could ever be a place where Danes and Saxons could live in peace.
The door creaked open, “Am I disturbing you?” a gentle voice called out.
Sigtryggr.
Opening her eyes, she sat up, “No, I uh, I was only in my thoughts.”
“What were you thinking about?” he asked.
Stiorra placed her chin on her shoulder, “My mother.”
He nodded, “How did she die?”
“Childbirth,” she whispered.
Sigtryggr sat next to her, “I am sorry.”
“I remember her only a little,” she added. “I do not know if that makes it worse or better.”
Tears filled in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She would not appear weak. Sigtryggr’s hand reached out for her, but she cleared her throat.
“Let’s play a game,” she forced a smile.
His head tilts, “Are you sure?”
“Afraid I shall win again?” she smirked.
He laughed, “I’d like to see you try.”
Stiorra laughed, grabbing the game and setting the board in between them. She glanced over, catching his eyes, and the two stared at the other for only a short moment.
But for them, that moment was everything.

The Siege of Winchester - Sigtryggr x Stiorra (Part 2)
Tumblr media
Part 1
Stiorra banged her head against the table in boredom. She had not been in Winchester very long and she was already about to go mad. She searched around the reading room looking for something, anything to do besides sit and wait for her father. Yet, there was nothing. Nothing but old books about Saxons and games played by old men. She never thought she wished to be back in the company of Aelthstan and Aelfwyn.
Getting up from her seat at the table, she climbed up to look out the window. It’s not like she could actually see if her father and his men were near, not from her point of view anyway. But she knew he would come. Uhtred may not have been a present father, but he loved his children and would die before any harm came to them.
However, she knew if her father came to Winchester they would try to kill him. Especially Brida. She carried the weight of hatred and revenge for her father. Stiorra could never imagine being that cold and living for the sake of revenge. But then again, she has never been in love. At least in the terms of a lover. Sure, she loved her mother, her father, and her brother. She even cared for her father’s men. But never a lover.
Most girls her age were not heading towards a life of marriage and children. She refused to live such a life. She would not become a wife nor bear children just for the sake of it. No, she had lived her life for other people her entire life. If she survived this, she would live a life of freedom. A life of her own choosing.
The door opened causing Stiorra to turn around. She rolled her eyes seeing Eardwulf. She could smell the ale all the way from her place at the table. He stumbled over towards her.
“I’ve been drinking ale,” he slurred.
Stiorra turned her face away from him, “I know.”
“What do you want?” She asked.
Eardwulf threw his knife onto the table in front of her, “To kill someone. I think.”
“Someone or myself, one of the two,” he hiccuped.
Stiorra looked at the knife on the table, “Sigtryggr wants me as a hostage.”
She debated on whether she could take the knife and use it to her advantage. But if even she were to escape, there were too many Danes she would have to take on and a knife would simply not help.
“I am of use to him alive,” she said.
“Oh, don’t be fooled,” he said, reaching out for a strand of her hair. “He’s playing with you.”
Stiorra glared at him, pushing his hand away from her.
“Unlike myself, he’s a man bereft of conscience,” he whispered.
Stiorra pulled herself up from the table, walking away from him, “Then don’t anger him by killing me… If you want favor amongst the Danes.”
“I do not want favor amongst the Danes!” He shouted, causing Stiorra to jump slightly.
She slowly took steps away from him, feeling the wall against her back.
Eardwulf closed the distance between them. Stiorra felt his drunken breath against her.
“Making a bargain with them was madness. I can see that now. I will suffer whatever I choose. So, I might as well take pleasure in a small scrap of vengeance,” he whispered.
“I have done nothing to you!” Stiorra spat.
“Your father turned my sister from me. Your father, Lady Aethelflaed, the King, all of them, stole my chance to regain my honor. Pushed my face in the dirt when all I wanted was to take back what was owed. Do you know what it is to live your life derided? To be forced to turn from your people to survive? Do you know what that does to a man?,” he told her, his face inches from her’s.
Stiorra dipped down, escaping from his trap, “Turns him into a drunk?”
“Do not mock me,” Eardwulf shook his head.
“Then don’t be pitiful,” Stiorra spat. “All this you brought upon yourself. You know that.”
Anger overtook Eardwulf as he brought his hand across Stiorra’s face.
“Ah!” she cried out, holding her stinging cheek.
**
Once his breathing had returned to normal, he knew he needed to distract himself. He should have checked on his men. Checked to see if there was any word from Edward or Uhtred, but instead he found himself heading to the room that held Stiorra. The closer he got to the room, he heard a shouting match.
There was an anger in the man’s voice and a mocking tone in Stiorra’s. A smirk broke out across his lips. But that’s when he heard it. The smack. He pushed open the door, hoping it was Stiorra’s hand against Eardwulf’s cheek that made the noise, but it was not. Stiorra held her cheek. The same redness he saw just moments ago was back.
He walked over to Eardwulf, standing in between him and Stiorra.
“Is this how we play now?” Sigtryggr asked. “We strike those weaker than ourselves?”
Sigtryggr backhanded Eardwulf, the sound echoing throughout the room, “Go on. I like this game,” he smirked, glancing back at Stiorra.
Still holding her cheek, she looked at Sigtryggr, shocked by his actions.
“She’s defiant and does not fear me,” Eardwulf stuttered.
“Is that how Saxons are controlled?” Sigtryggr asked.
Eardwulf shook his head, “I don’t understand you.”
“In Saxon lands, are people subdued by fear?” Sigtryggr asked, slower.
Confused, Eardwulf looked at him, “Aren’t all people subdued by fear?”
“Was this how Alfred thrived?” Sigtryggr looked at him.
“Yes,” Eardwulf nodded.
“No! Alfred was loved,” Stiorra interrupted. “Look at how they honor him.”
Sigtryggr crossed his arms, “And what of your Lord Aethelred whom you abandoned to chose a life with me?”
“Aethelred was loved and feared,” he responded.
Stiorra scoffed, “Not by you. You killed him in his bed.”
Sigtryggr looked at her.
“It’s why he ran from Merica,” she told him.
“Is this true?” Sigtryggr asked him.
“No, why would you believe a captive girl?” Eardwulf defended.
“You lie worse than a child,” Sigtryggr laughed. “I knew there was something untrustworthy about you.”
“I brought you here. You can trust me. I’ve proved it,” Eardwulf said.
“And how should I rule here?” Sigtryggr whispered. “By love? Or by fear?”
Eardwulf gulped, “I would always choose fear.”
Stiorra stood in shock at the events that took place. How Sigtryggr came to her aid, not that she needed him to, but she was grateful. She wasn’t sure what he would do to Eardwulf now, but she had an inkling. A Dane would not allow someone to cross them, especially if that person is a Saxon. Now that Sigtryggr has no use for him, surely he would be killed.
She heard shouting from the outside. Rushing over to the window to peek out, she saw Sigtryggr’s men carrying Eardwulf out in front of the other Danes. He’s shoved to the ground as Sigtryggr spoke to his men. Stiorra’s lip cracked into a smile when she saw Eardwulf brought to his knees and a knife shoved into his body.
And that’s when it happened. The sound of an army approaching. Edward’s army and her father.
It had started.
**
Night had fallen and so had the initial attack on Winchester by Edward’s army. Now, the only sound to be heard outside of the walls where Stiorra was being kept is the sound of men drinking and laughing. She sighed leaning against the window, the moonlight shone through illuminating her facial features along with burning flames. She had not seen Sigtryggr since he had taken Eardwulf away and she felt the odd feeling of missing him.
Shaking her thoughts away, she once again roamed around the room looking for any source of entertainment. Her boredom is what triggered her previous feelings. Sigtryggr was the only person to visit her so far during her stay, besides Eardwulf, but she could care less about him. Being stuck inside of a room by herself was surely the cause of wanting the presence of another.
Yet the only presence she wanted was that of Sigtryggr. It’s almost as if the Gods heard her because soon that is exactly who walked in through the door.
Sigtryggr. He carried a plate of food and a cup of water in his hands.
“I thought you might be hungry,” he said, holding the plate up to show her.
“I am, thank you,” she nodded.
Sigtryggr walked over, placing the food onto the table, before taking a seat at the end of the table. Still wanting to keep his distance from her.
“I am sorry for what happened with Eardwulf,” he said softly. “I told you I would not harm you and you have been harmed.”
“Not by you,” she answered. “Eardwulf was a drunk who felt sorry for himself and for his actions. I do not blame you for what he did.”
“Besides, it only hurt a little,” she said. “I’m stronger than I look.”
Sigtryggr smiled, “I see that.”
Sigtryggr leaned forward a bit, “But in any case, he is dead. And I promise no more harm will come to you. I swear to the Gods.”
Taking a bite of bread, Stiorra looked at him, “Is that your way of saying you have no plans to kill me?”
“I do not,” he said.
“Even though my death could bring my father here?” She asked. “Isn’t that what you want? To kill the Dane-Slayer?”
“Perhaps,” Sigtryggr said. “But I’m also learning there may be another path for me.”
“And what is that?” she asked.
“I do not know,” he said. “But I’m willing to wait and find out.”
Stiorra turned her body in order to fully face him now, “If you have no plans to kill me nor my father, then why am I still here? How am I of use to you?”
“I am not sure about that either,” he said, walking closer toward her. “What I do know is, the Gods brought you here and there must be a reason for that.”
Stiorra felt her turn in stomach as she looked up at him. His eyes never left hers as he brought his head up to her cheek.
“You have a small cut,” he whispered.
“I am fine,” she breathed out.
Ignoring her, Sigtryggr tore a piece of cloth from the table, dabbing it into the cup of water. He took her chin in his hand and slowly cleaned the dried blood from her cheek.
Stiorra winced, but he held her gaze. The two of them locked eyes for what seemed like forever. Their bodies slowly crept towards the other, closing the small distance between them. Stiorra placed her hand over his, bringing it down from her cheek.
“Thank you,” she whispered.
Their fingers gently caressed the others. It felt as if time stood still. That neither of them were in Winchester with drunken men outside and a royal army waiting outside the walls to take back what was theirs.
No, at that moment, it was just the two of them. Together. Fighting against a feeling neither one of them ever felt before nor believed they could ever want. Sigtryggr took his gaze from her’s, but only for a second to glance down at her lips. Stiorra nodded her head, granting him permission.
However, the door flew open and Hestan walked in.
Both Sigtryggr and Stiorra jumped, moving away from each other. Stiorra took a bite of bread, while Sigtryggr messed with Thor’s Hammer around his neck.
Hestan froze, “Uh, sorry, my lord, but uh, you are needed outside. There seems to be a little mishap amongst the men with the ale.”
Sigtryggr sighed, “Give me a moment.”
Hestan nodded quickly before retreating. Stiorra continued to face away from Sigtryggr.
“I should go before I lose my men to drunken fights,” he laughed, softly.
Stiorra laughed a bit, “We can’t have that can we?”
“I’ll return tomorrow,” he said. “If that is okay with you.”
Spinning her ring around her finger, she nodded, “Perhaps we could play a game or two.”
“Perhaps,” he smiled.
Sigtryggr headed towards the door, turning back to look at her, “Goodnight, Stiorra,” he bowed slightly.
“Goodnight, Sigtryggr,” she whispered.

The Siege of Winchester - Sigtryggr x Stiorra (Part 4)
Tumblr media
Part 1   Part 2   Part 3
** “Ha! Another win!” Stiorra clapped.
Sigtryggr shook his head with a laugh, “Apparently you have played this game several times before.”
“Perhaps,” she smirked.
“Let us take a break,” Sigtryggr said. “I’ll send for some food.”
Stiorra nodded, pushing the game to the middle of the table. Thirty Days. Sigtryggr had held Winchester for thirty days and it seemed as though Edward and his men were running out of time. Stiorra wondered how long this would last. She knew the Saxon king would never surrender Winchester to the Danes. He had too much honor in that. No, he would fight for it.
“How much longer do you plan to hold onto Winchester?” She asked.
“For as long as I need,” he said.
“So, have you decided what it is you plan to do?” Stiorra questioned. “What the point of this is?”
Sigtryggr looked at her, “I want land. A place to build a home for my people.”
Stiorra placed her head on her chin, “And you think Edward will offer you land in exchange for Winchester?”
“I do not know,” he said. “But I will try. And if he does not, then Winchester will suit us just fine.”
“Then what about me?” She asked. “Am I to stay here until you get what you want? Held in this room?”
He sighed, looking down at his ring, “No, I will not keep you here any longer should Edward not make a bargain. You will be returned to your father.”
Stiorra bit her lip, “And what if I do not wish to return to my father?”
He looks at her, confusion on his face, “What do you mean?”
“If I return to my father, he will take me to Coccham,” she spoke. “I do not want to live in Coccham. I do not want to live a small life there waiting until I must marry. That is not the life I want.”
“Then what do you want?” He asked.
She sighed, “I wish to live amongst other Danes. I’ve lived the life of a Saxon. I want a chance to live the life of a Dane. To find the part of myself that died along with my mother.”
Sigtryggr’s heart began to race as he listened to her words. He had no idea where this was coming from, nor what it meant. But he understood it.
“If Edward gives you land, I would like to live there,” she said.
“You would give up your life in England, to live in Daneland?” He asked.
“I do not see it as giving up my life here,” she said. “I see it as living my life. Feeling free to discover the other part of myself that I’ve longed for. Yes, I can do that here, but it is not the same. I will miss my father and my brother, but we have been apart for most of my life, so it would not be any different.”
Sigtryggr longed to say yes. He felt something stirring inside of him hearing she wished to go with him. But was she really saying she wanted to go with him? Not in so many words. She wanted to live amongst the Danes, but that did not mean she wanted to live with him.
“All Danes will be welcome,” he said.
“Even half danes,” he added with a smile. “But will your father agree to such a thing?”
“Depends,” she said. “He is protective. He knows we have missed many years together. He wants us to be a family in Coccham, but that will only be until he is needed elsewhere. I would like for my father to agree, but I’m also willing to go without his blessing.”
“And have the Dane Slayer attack to get you back?” he laughed.
She laughed, “Only if he thought I was being harmed.”
“I would not let that happen,” he whispered.
“Then you should have nothing to worry about,” she smiled.
**
“755, Cynewulf and the West Saxons deprived Sigbert of his kingdom because of his unlawful deeds. Cynewulf often fought great battles in Wealas,” Stiorra read out loud.
Reading from Alfred’s chronicle was another activity she and Sigtryggr did to pass the time away. It was mostly her reading it, while he sat and listened.
Stiorra sighed, “Please, this is so dull. I want to pull out my own eyes.”
Sigtryggr laughed, toying with one of his braids, “Spoken like a true heathen.”
“Shall we play another game?” Stiorra suggested.
“What was the tally again?” she smirked.
Looking over at her, “I am not keeping count,” he responded.
“Come, read,” he sighed.
Setting the game pieces onto the board, Stiorra groaned, “I’m too hungry to read.”
Quickly, Sigtryggr got up from his chair, grabbing the remainder of the bread from the basket. He placed it onto the book in front of Stiorra, gazing down at her.
“Is this the last of the bread?” She asked, looking up at him.
Leaning closer to her, “I’m not keeping count of that either,” he whispered.
“Do you still have the grain?” She asked, eyeing him as he walked around to the other side of her.
Before he could answer, the door is pushed open, in walked Brida and Haesten.
“I’m taking the girl. We need to kill a hostage,” Brida said, reaching for Stiorra.
“And she will get their attention.” she added.
Sigtryggr looked over at Haesten.
“They threatened fire,” he responded.
“And in response we show no mercy,” Brida declared.
Shaking his head, he placed his arm between Stiorra and Brida, “Then not her. She is worthless.”
Brida rolled her eyes, “Not to the Dane Slayer. Sigtryggr I need Uhtred to come out and fight.”
“This will force his hand,” Brida said, grabbing for Stiorra again.
Sigtryggr looked at Stiorra, “Is this true? Will your father attack us?”
Glaring at Brida, Stiorra responded, “If he does, he’ll destroy you.”
Brida lunged for Stiorra, but Sigtryggr stood in between them, “Do not succumb to anger, Brida.”
“Haesten, tell the men to get clay and water,” he said. “Dampen the roofs. Protect the walls from fire.”
“Then I will select a hostage… and we will see what they do, hm,” he said.
Annoyed Brida turned on her heel walking out the room, Haesten following her. Sigtryggr gave Stiorra one last look before leaving her alone in the reading room.
**
Stiorra paced around the room. She grew anxious about what was happening. She had not seen or heard from Sigtryggr since he left with Brida and Haestan. Not knowing how long she’d be waiting around, but by the light shining in the window, it had to be hours.
All of a sudden, she heard war cries and swords clanking against one another from outside. Rushing over to the window, she climbed up to see.
She gasped. Edward’s army had attacked. Danes and Saxons were fighting to the death. Her father was out there. Sigtryggr was out there.
“No!” She cried.
She banged on the glass, trying to get it to break, but it held against her strength. Jumping down, she goes to the door, tugging on it, but it was no use. She was locked inside.
“Damn it!” She shouted.
She rushed back to the window. There was smoke everywhere. She couldn’t see anything.
And once again, all she could do was sit and wait.
**
The door opened. Stiorra brought her head up from where she laid on the table. She looked over, seeing Sigtryggr walking inside. Without realizing what she was doing, she jumped to her feet, running over to him. She wrapped her arms around him. Taken aback by her actions, he hesitated at first, before wrapping his arms around her waist.
“What happened?” She asked, looking up at him. “I saw Edward attacked. My father is he-”
“Calm down,” he said. “Come sit down and I will tell you everything.”
The two sat down at the table, facing one another.
Sigtryggr sighed, “I chose the boys, Edward’s heirs, as the hostages. I gave him the option to retreat and he may have one of the boys.”
Stiorra gasped, “Aethelstan-” she whispered.
“But he did not choose,” he said. “Instead your father offered to come into Winchester alone if I let the boys go. We made the exchange.”
Tears filled her eyes, but she refused to let them fall, “My father is he- Did you-”
“Do not worry,” he said. “The Dane Slayer is alive. I spoke with him about a bargain for peace and land. We spoke for quite a while. It was during that time, Edward’s army attacked.”
“So, there is no bargain, then?” She asked.
“We called a truce and both Edward and Aethelfeld agreed to speak with me,” he said.
“And?” She asked.
“You are very impatient,” he laughed. “They agreed to give me Eoforwick and the surrounding lands.”
Stiorra smiled.
“They also agreed to peace, as long as I do not cross the Merica and Wessex borders. Then both Saxons and Danes may live in peace,” he whispered.
“You did it, then,” she smiled. “You have a homeland for you and your people.”
Sigtryggr smiled, “There is one more thing I asked for.”
Stiorra looked confused, “What?”
“You,” he whispered.
“Me?” she asked, shocked.
“And they agreed,” he said. “But it is still up to you, but I must ask-”
Stiorra’s eyes looked into his.
“If you come, is it only because you wish to live in Daneland or-” he whispered. “Or would you wish to live there with me?”
And there it was. Her life was about to change with whatever decision she was to make. She previously told him of her want to live in Daneland and while her reasoning before was true. Deep down she knew it was the man she wished to follow. There was still much to learn about him and of the feelings she grew to feel for him. But she could not see a life without him.
She could not bear to leave with her father today and never see Sigtryggr again.
“I wish-” she started. “I wish to live with you in Daneland.”
Sigtryggr’s lips turned up into a smile. He placed his forehead against Stiorra’s.
“Then you shall have your wish,” he whispered.
