Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
A big nose just means more to love- especially when you’re a hammer headed bat. The males’ large noses act as resonating chambers, amplifying vocalizations during the mating season. In order to make sure their voices are heard, males also have vocal chords three times the size of the female.

I love reading zoology research articles so much - yeah often there will be a ridiculous amount of academic language and scientists should be pushing to make knowledge more widely accessible but there's something about it all that is just unintentionally comedic. Like the formality of it all and the funding required and the number of scientists being like yeah this is my life's work and it is incredibly significant and then they'll show you the animal and it's just-

Creature Awaits #240
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry. Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )

The Hammer-Headed Bat
Scientific Name: Hypsignathus monstrosus
Region: A region of western central Africa
Size: About a 3'4" (~1.0m) wingspan
Interesting Notes: The males of this unique fruit bat species, the largest of continental Africa, have a large resonating chamber in their snout used in producing loud honking noises to attract potential mates. Females of the species look more like other fruit bat species, and weigh roughly half their male counterparts' weight.

could i ask for some bat facts for my partner? :0 they love bats nd i'd also like to learn more abt them!!
yes of course my friend!! I love bats so much so this will be my pleasure!
There was an experiment done back in 2oo8(?) where they put a mustache bat on a swing to see how they beat the doppler effect when echo-locating. Mustache bats have a specific shaped ear canal so they can hear a certain pitch that they are really good at making. So, when the bats were moved forward on the swing they would make this sound at different pitches, so when they flew into them, they would come back at that sweet, sweet pitch that they are specifically designed to hear, but on the way back on the swing they didn't make any noise, why? because bats don't fly backwards! I'm paraphrasing but its real cool and this person does a really good job at explaining it (also leads to a really cool bat blogger)
Now one of my personal favourite bats, the Hammer-Headed Bat, which are pretty goofy lookin bats and they live up to 30 years (like most bats) but are also one of the most sexually dimorphic bats with the males having vocal chords or larynges three times the size of a females. The males heads are therefore more large and boxy to accommodate this, while females have more narrow foxlike features. What I find most interesting about this though, is they are fruit bats, so they don't even need echolocation!! Ain't that strange?
also, back in 2019ish? I did a whole months worth of bat facts I called battober, so you should be able to search the tag #battober on my blog if you or your partner would like :)
Hope you found these fun, cool and/or interesting! Have a good one my friend! :D
