How I Met Your Brother (DC x DP)
Dan joins the Justice League - not as part of his rehabilitation, but as a reward for doing so well.
Tucker makes the grave mistake of mentioning Dan in front of Jazz. And as an eldest sister myself I would not be happy about an alternate version of my sibling being left completely alone in the world, no support, no family to then be turned into a psychopath. And I would be furious for them to then be imprisoned - not for life but for all time?
However, unlike me, Jazz is the world's foremost authority on ghost psychology. She has Dan out of his Thermos and in a larger enclosure within the week.
Now, a lot of fics have Jazz as a magical therapist who can say a few sentences and make any bad guy cry. Sorry, not today though.
First, they resocialise Dan like a feral cat (solitary confinement does make people get loopy), sitting outside his enclosure and hanging out, doing homework etc. This sort of gets him to figure out emotionally that he's no longer in the timeline where everyone he ever cared about died.
Danny discusses with him how many nightmares he's had over just the idea of losing his entire support network the way Dan did and he can't imagine what he's been through. But no emotions are not, in fact superior to having negative emotions.
After a few months, he decides that he does in fact want to actively try and get better. He goes to a therapist (because family members can't do therapy!!!) who's just unhinged enough to get a kick out of counselling a ghost from an alternate timeline.
There's only one relapse. Clockwork fixed it and they don't talk about it.
A month or so later they let him out of the enclosure for good. They offer to symbolically destroy it but Dan thinks they should keep it just in case.
While Dan's humanity has returned, his actual human half is gone forever. But he's interested in doing something with himself. He can't get a GED, or a degree, or be an astronaut. Maybe something in entertainment?
Tucker makes the grave mistake of mentioning that the Justice League headquarters are in space. Dan isn't as powerful anymore now he's no longer a halfa, but he knows he's handy in a fight. He loves space and due to having them repeatedly and ineffectively implemented against himself - a deep knowledge of international war tactics.
NGL, this isn't where I thought this story was going. But Dan is now an international politics, war policy and foreign affairs expert, I guess.
He helps a fair bit on the team, but his key contributions are his encyclopaedic predictions of how different international communities will react to events. If an out of control meta in Paris takes down the Eiffel Tower, he predicts which countries will immediately 'crack down' on their superpowered citizens - that sort of thing. It's invaluable for their PR team and young meta safety.
He's a friendly guy, doesn't judge anyone for losing control of their powers or going 'too far' on a villain who hurt their friends and family. And he never shuts up about his kid brother who is apparently also his best friend. He briefly mentions a baby sister he's never met and that makes everyone pretty sad.
He doesn't consider this Jazz his sister. He's already had a sister named Jazz and isn't looking for a 1:1 replacement. This Jazz is more like a mum-friend. However, he never had a Danny or an Ellie in his last life.
"My little brother told me about the trick to this level in Doomed 17, want me to explain what you're missing?"
"Sorry, I really can't possess you, even for 'anti mind-control' training. That isn't how overshadowing works, you can't become immune without exposure to ectoplasm in dangerous doses. No, I can't get you some pure ecto, my baby brother would kick my ass to hell."
"Yeah, my baby bro and I both wanted to be astronauts, I died so it's not in the cards for me anymore, but he has a real shot still, we're all rooting for him!"
Most Justice League members think he's a dead eldest brother with living siblings he's still in close contact with.
It's all fun and games until he tries to take a bullet for Batman during an ambush and it's actually an amnesia ray designed to make Batman forget about a specific case until the bad guy can complete his plan.
"I killed you all before, and I will do it again."

Tim Doesn't Age
Source: #crack
E
Possible reasons why Tim doesn't age:
1) Lazarus water in his coffee, courtesy of Damien.  Damien, ever tired of being the "baby" of the family, secretly doses Tim in small amounts with Lazarus water so while Damien gets a chance to look dark and gritty like Batman as he gets older, Tim will have a perpetual case of baby face. Tim, being the avid coffee drinker he is, doesn't even notice. The thing is, what Damien would have never guessed is that even though the doses are super small, Tim is now not only technically immortal, but Also a citizen of the ghost zone (if we're going by the theory of Lazarus pits being defunct ghost zone portals)
They find out this when a ghost zone equivalent of a IRS auditor shows up asking Tim why he hasn't been paying his taxes
M/F
pffft
AK
Wouldn't that just be like reaaaly bad ectocontamination
M/F
Then Jazz and Danny are pretty much immortal too
Danny before the accident
AK
It could be that all his near-death experiences were him coming back as a halfa idk maybe death is an activation agent
M/F
Tim has a lot of near-death situations...
E
2) Impulse stole a few years off of him using the speed force as a dare, and genuinely forgot to return them.
I don't think bart did it outta spite- just to see if he could but he had to go save someone before he could return the years.
Bonus: since he moved too fast to track/see, Bart lost the bet
E
[Wouldn't that just be like reaaaly bad ectocontamination]
I only posted this for the lolz, up to personal interpretation 🤷‍♀️
AK
Theoretically if jazz were to kick the bucket shed become a halfa going by the logic I posted abive
Due to lifetime ecto-contamination
Or Tim's a ghost 😱
E
3) The stress of being in constant life or death battles gives Tim baby face. It sounds completely rediculious, which it is,but hear me out. Some aspects of physiology, especially in certain DC alternate universes, are psychosomatic. Studies have been conducted that reveal the body deteriorates in high stress situations. So the reason Tim looks forever young is because a bunch of angst and stress stunted his growth.
I'll grant that this could affect other batfam members, except stress affects everyone differently, so there's a chance that the others just aren't as bothered, or that they show being bothered differently
               [Or Tim's a ghost 😱]
That's probably reason 4
M/F
reason 5: Tim is a vampire
E
               [That's probably reason 4]
Tim died of a caffeine induced heart attack and the dumbass didn't realize he was a ghost so he went on living his life but never aged
AK
Lmao
I personally hc that Tim doesn't drink coffee. He can stay awake for that long bc he's a ghost
M/F
reason 7: magic?
E
Adsfdsgf
But if Tim doesn't drink coffee, why a thermos?
AK
He never liked it but after a weirdly rapid heart rate one day, he didn't need it to stay awake anymore!!
M/F
reason 6 is not to be spoken of/j
AK
[But if Tim doesn't drink coffee, why a thermos?]
Hot choco
E
Tt.
AK
ghost blobba tea slipped in there by either Jason or Damien who probs have contact with the ghost zone via either Danny or the pits
E
Hecc
Bobba tea would be weird in a thermos, just saying
Maybe Steph makes Tim soup?
M/F
Ghost blob noodles
AK
with GHOST VEGGIES
SS
Reason 8: Death knows better than to fuck with the kid who fought Time itself for Bruce
M/F
Reason 9: Reboots and the concept of timeline continuity don't affect him anymore
SS
10: he slipped out of the timestream by accident while he was bat stalking and now he can't get back in
M/F
11: Reasons 10 and 9 make all the reasons valid somehow
L
Death should fear most the bats with how much they ignore it
M/F
death is a social construct
SS
12: Tim accidentally swallowed one of Clockwork's shrunken medallions while he was an unsupervised toddler
M/F
13: He got a kpop idol's skin care routine
L
14: It’s a curse from one of the things his parents picked up
SS
15: Tim is an eldritch god that got amnesia
M/F
16: Tim swallowed a time stone from one of the Marvel crossovers in the 90s
17: Tim actually is aging but backwards
SS
Benjamin Button is that you?
18: Tim is just Like That and no one knows how or why
M/F
19: His spleen caused him to age, but after he lost it.... he lost the ability to age
20: The MCU snap got him, and somehow the bats didnt notice he was missing or that 5 years passed.
because continuity is already messed up
SS
21: Klarion did it for the lols
M/F
22: Shazam (old wizard) did it for the lols
SS
23: Constantine did
24: they all did it individually but didn't know the others did
M/F
25: they actually didn't do it and Dr. Fate did it

Danny Phantom: Arcs and build up
Okay, let's talk about character arcs, continuity and built up.
Usually when writing a story in a series, there are some episodes dedicated to exploring certain story elements that later become important for the plot. This isusually called "foreshadowing" or "built up".
Foreshadowing is when the writer gives certain clues about what is going to happen next in the story without being explicit about it.
"Build up" is when there are some episodes that set up for a important event in the story. For example: A character becoming evil. Before the character turns completely evil, they are likely to have a few episodes exploring how they are slowly getting worse until they finally decide to betray the heroes. This really helps feeling the character's arc more realistic as their development didn't feel like came of nowhere.
Now let's talk about Reign Storm, The ultimate enemy and arcs in Danny Phantom.
Danny phantom is a character driven series, so when talking about arcs i'm going to refer to them as "character arcs".
Let's start with Vlad's character arc:
Tumblr media
Vlad Masters is first introduced in the episode 7 in season 1 "Bitter reunions". In this episode we learn about his motivations, personality, goals and backstory. We know that he wants to get his revenge on Jack, and make Maddie and Danny "join him". Another of his personal goals is stealing and becoming more powerful.
Near the end of the episode Vlad foreshadows that he is going to see Danny again some time.
In "Shades of Gray" he is the one that gives Valerie the ghost hunter equipment, he makes a small cameo spying on her to check if she got her package.
In "Maternal instincts" we get to see more about his character and "fruitloopness" as Danny would put it. "Bitter reunions" made it clear he is a "fruitloop" but "Maternal instincs" proofs this even further by showing his extreme methods to get what he wants are.
"Maternal instincts" he still wants to Maddie and Danny to be his family. He ends up ruining his relationship with Maddie ( she thought of him as a close friend) and Danny even more. He's so desperate to the point that he really believed Danny wants to be his son after everything that happened.
In "Million Dollar Ghost" he tries stealing the Skeleton Key. After escaping from the guardian, his ghost portal blews up and goes to the Amity Park to steal Fenton's portal.
In a "Million Dollar Ghost" he also tries to break the bond between Jack and Danny, however, his main goal is the ghost portal. After he is beaten by no other than Jack. He accidentally finds the Skeleton Key but the guardian eats him.
Up until this point we know that:
Vlad wants to do something with the Skeleton Key (Reign Storm).
He has ruined his relationship with Danny and Maddie, both realizing what kind of person he is.
His main goals and motivations.
He is using Valerie for his own goals.
He is the one the gave the equipment to Valerie.
Now, Valerie's arc:
Tumblr media
Her character is really first developed in "Shades of Gray". We all already know her backstory at this point: She used to be a rich girl that used to hang out with the popular kids until one day Cujo and Danny as Phantom made her dad lose his job at Axiom Labs and that ruined her life. She lost her own social status and her friends left her.
This made her hate ghosts with a burning passion. After receiving a package from Vlad, she started to train to become a ghost hunter and hunt Phantom.
Later in "Life lessons" she teams up with Danny (Phantom) to escape and fight Skulker, who was trying to hunt them down.
Valerie and Danny in the same episode start developing feelings for each other after Danny tries to make up to Valerie by helping her with her second job. She also learns that not all ghosts are totally evil, which becomes crucial in future episodes.
So until now we know that:
Valerie hates ghosts due to an incident that ruined her life.
Has a crush on Danny but doesn't like Phantom.
Is Training to be a ghost hunter
Her relationship with Danny is very complicated.
I noticed how Valerie has only two episodes in season 1 despite being one of the most interesting characters in the show.
As for Danny's arc:
Tumblr media
Since he is the protagonist, i'll write a short summary of his arc in season 1:
This season is mainly about him learning how to control his powers while growing up into a responsible teenager. In some episodes, he slowly grows to understand that not all ghosts are evil and don´t want to harm anyone (Like Cujo and Wulf). He also solves conflicts without his "punching first, ask questions later". He grows closer with his family, specially his sister Jazz, who finds about his secret.
Besides these character arcs "Fright Night" is an episode that introduces the Fright Night, who later serves as a secondary antagonist in "Reign Storm".
Why did i talked about all these arcs? Because they all become important for Reign Storm.
Danny's, Vlad's and Valerie's arcs were all building up for this specific episode. So, when you watch this "Reign Storm" you already know who these characters are, their personalities and development.
You know where Vlad got the key to open the ghost king's prision. You know about Danny's and Vlad's rivalry. You know why Valerie decides to team up with Phantom. You also know all the ghosts that help Danny during his battle against the Ghost King.
Reign Storm is a great episode on its own but it works so well because of all the set up and foreshadowing in season 1. It feels rewarding so see everything paying off in this episode.
Now i'm going to explain my issue with The Ultimate Enemy:
There's very little built up and foreshadowing for such an important episode.
I mean,look at this:
Tumblr media
There are only two episode between Reign Storm and The ultimate enemy.
Identity Crisis, which establishes that halfas can be separated.
The fenton Menace that focus on Danny and Jazz relationship and is important for the special.
There is very little build up to Dan's character or his tragic origins. Or how crazy the whole episode is in comparison to the rest of the series.
You could argue that "Control Freaks" and "Memory Blank" foreshadow alternative timelines and Dan (even if Memory Blank makes no sense). But still doesn't feel enough. The series would need more a few more episodes to develop Danny´s character.
Like, why no an episode about him hurting someone with his ghost powers? Or him thinking he is turning evil? Why no an episode about Vlad showing he still has some humanity left inside him foreshadowing his alternative future self?
It doesn't help that The ultimate enemy lacks continuity: Danny having a dark side? Vlad actually showing he is capable of feeling sorry? Danny going to an alternative future caused by him and not having nightmares about it? A Fusion of two powerful ghosts? The ending hinting at Dan returning? (Which he never did because the show was cancelled)
Sure, Jazz and Danny relationship changes ,that's great, and Clockwork appears in Masters of time again.
However, The ultimate enemy introduced so many great concepts and they weren´t that well-explored in later episodes, which is a pity. The special itself is very entertaining but i think i would had worked better as a story arc finale and not airing two episodes after Reign Storm.
It´s also a bit weird since there are other episodes that have build up like Flirting with Disaster, Secret Weapons, Kindred Spirits yet this The Ultimate Enemy doesn´t.
I would have really liked for the writers of show to have more time to create an arc about Dan and not just two episodes. Or at least return in a season finale. That would have been a great idea.

What is your opinion on the episode Masters of All Time? Is there anything that you would want to change plotwise? And is it going to appear in some kind of way in your EPverse?
I consider Masters of All Time a victim of the show’s tone problems more than anything else. I really don’t mind that the show is usually silly, but with serious pitches like Masters of All Time, it’s hard to tell whether they’re meant to be funny or genuinely dark. They fumble both aspects equally. (I’m speaking in plurals because Reality Trip and Kindred Spirits have the same issue. Yes I still hate Kindred Spirits no I will never be over it)
The main things I’d change if I took on Masters of All Time (but while we’re here, no, don’t expect an equivalent on the episode list):
1. Every fucking thing about the alternate timeline. Jack’s Xerox of the Plasmius costume. The fact that Maddie left Jack for Vlad because he did one (1) decent thing for her. The fact that Vlad was still as asshole-- actually, that I can believe, but not to the extent that he was in canon.
It should’ve been like-- a parody of Vlad’s “kill Jack, marry Maddie” fantasy. Maybe Vlad and Maddie married after Vlad’s accident and gained fame and fortune from their research, but were still unhappy together. (Vlad because he never felt safe confiding in Maddie about being a halfa; Maddie because Vlad’s infatuation with her has long since died and they both know it.) They have a half-ghost kid who looks exactly like Danny, and he’s just as unhappy as them, because they’re just staying together for him and he feels torn between his parents. Jack was thrown out of the friend group/died of self-neglect not long after, and remains a ghost who wants nothing more than to see Vlad and Maddie again and apologize. He helps Danny and alt!Danny so they’ll lead him to Wisconsin, but when they get there, Vlad refuses Jack’s apologies about the accident and Maddie attacks him.
2. A crucial element is Vlad either being there to see this, or Danny relaying this to him. Either Vlad redeems himself or it’s a bridge to Kindred Spirits (”if I can’t entreat my perfect family, I’ll just create it myself”); it’s your choice.
3. This bleeds into Bitter Reunions but I’m sorry the whole idea of “ecto-acne” is so clearly just a gross-out joke. Make it something cool like advanced supernatural necrosis or something
4. Make Clockwork more of an antagonist, please. He has no reason to do Danny any favors. Maybe the alternate reality is fabricated so Danny has another chance to redeem Vlad since he dropped the ball after TUE, or there’s more stakes to hopping around the timestream.

Some Danny Phantom Headcanons of mine
That I may or may not use in future fanfictions.
During his time as a human on earth, Walker founded the Guys in White as a means of "efficiently" dealing with ghosts. Walker would die during a prison riot in the year 1916. He never got a chance to meet his grandkids or grand nieces.
Ghosts that had lives on Earth, hold very little recollection of their time. The vague memories build most of their personalities, influencing their powers, ghost cores, planes in the Ghost Zone, etc. It's unknown (or is it!? ;)) what exactly happens to ghosts that gain all their lost memories, but most don't desire to learn them.
The strongest power a ghost can have is reflective of how they died. This is known as "Ghost Core Breaking". Hence why Danny's strongest ghost power is the Ghostly Wail. He was screaming while inside the Ghost Portal. It's also why he passes out when using it sometimes.
The first known ghost portal was invented during WW2. The research was lost and most files were destroyed. Until some were found again one day by Jack Fenton.
Ghost hunting technology increased during WW2. With a project labeled "Sojurn's Tempest" being only known to a select few individuals.
Sam and Tucker had only a 70/30 chance of dying versus becoming half ghosts of they were in Danny's place. Danny on the other hand, had only no chance if dying fully in the Ghost Portal. A fact that carries over to Vlad Masters. And Jack Fenton in an alternate timeline. Neither are aware of the fact yet.
Ghost hunting technology has been around since the 1880s. More mystical and magical practices have been around since early civilizations.
Casper High has actually a very low mortality rate.
Other halfas have been around throughout human history. Some due to the natural Ghost Portals, some due to other reasons.
Why do natural ghosts coexist with ghosts that had lives on Earth? The Ghost Zone is the remains a dead universe. For example, Time itself "died" and Clockwork came into existence.
Johnny 13 and Kitty both died during the 1950s while on a ride on Johnny's motorcycle. Shadow is a natural ghost. Who may or may not be responsible.
Freakshow did in fact know Lydia during her human life and shared a romantic relationship with her.
Jazz doesn't believe any of Danny's adventures with the Nicktoons for a second.
Maddie has a couple of cousins, but they are in very little contact with each other.
Nicholai Technus had a Tech company during his life on Earth. His grandkid has some interest in reopening up the company.
Ember not her real name, just a theme for one of her songs and Mr. Lancer did in fact go to Casper High together. They weren't exactly "friends" but he was nice to her. He feels some guilt over her not finishing High School and being largely ignored by teachers. Influencing his position as a better teacher than the ones they had.
Danny has yet to "summon" his place in the Ghost Zone, due to not coming to grips with who he is yet.
Dani has been on some adventures of her own around the world. She's decided to change her name after realizing she needs an identity outside of Danny. She's even befriended Youngblood.
The Ecto Black Holes are to blame for all the natural Ghost Portals, due to their destructive nature.
Sojurn and Clockwork are friends.
The Unworld is inhabited by ghosts that slowly fade into nothing more than words and thoughts. Once completed faded, the ghosts reincarnate.
The Elsewhereness is immediately reached by people that have no ties or anything holding them back when they die.
Lunch Lady did in fact work at Casper High during her human years.
Jazz would've been a halfa if she was in Danny's position.
Box Ghost's death was being crushed under a bunch of boxes. During his time as a human, he was trying to find someone in a box.
In terms of halfas being able to produce children, there's a high chance they would die. They already use enough energy to stabilize their bodies.
Or maybe halfas can choose to pass on their ghost half or not. It's very up in the air.
Poindexter's parents did sue Casper High when he died. The high school is not the most popular in America.
Sam's parents might not be hers.
If Danny were to get his own realm in the Ghost Zone, it would be a floating city surrounded by moon sized planetoids. Each Planetoid would house something something relating to Danny on a personal level.
The Ghost of Space is intrigued by Danny, but tells Clockwork repeatedly that he has yet to be fully impressed by the Ghost Boy. A meeting in the future?
Yes, Danny has powers relating to space. He has yet to awaken them yet, as his status as a halfa never made him think if he had two ghost cores.
There used to be multiple Ghost Kings and Queens, but Pariah Dark made sure to dispose of them.
The Fright Knight used to be in charge of transporting souls to the Ghost Zone, but he has since left that duty.
Valerie's mom is a very... tough subject. Mostly cause Valerie isn't aware she faked her death.
Skulker was a ghost hunter in his youth during his human life.
Youngblood during his human life, grew up in an orphanage watching other kids play and get adopted. Pretending to be a pirate to take his mind off of things. Fueling his resentment and obsession as a ghost.
Danny is obsessed with saving and helping people. He's not aware of it yet.
Ghostwriter died choking on a Christmas sugar cookie, just before he got a chance to finish his masterpiece.
Vlad's obsession is perfection and ruling over everyone with an iron fist.
If Danny were to ever get weapons, they would definitely be knives (or some variant) as he is more of a close range brawler.
Magic definitely exists in the DPverse.
Danny's ghost half is purely ectoplasm from the Ghost Zone. Not from another ghost. Little does he know, he's giving it a bit more sentience each and every day.
Or maybe he's secretly related to another ghost we have yet to meet. Maybe the Ghost Zone is secret sentient? Who knows?

So! @guardianrex and I were talking about that Danny Phantom ‘Phantomverse’ post that’s going around like ‘what if we put all the phandom AUs together?’ I still think all the phandom AUs at once would be a horrible, terrifying task that no mortal can handle, but it made me want to make my own DP Spiderverse story and Rex, as usual, encouraged my bad ideas.
My initials thoughts were, okay, we need some AU Dannys that parallel the movie to some degree, but also can go fuck itself, and that create the following list:
Daniel “Danny” James Fenton/Phantom: Our “canon” Danny Phantom who is somewhere near his 30s, married to Sam, and still protects Amity Park while studying something dealing with NASA. He’s a bit overworked and stressed because Sam is starting to want kids, Danny is terrified at the idea of having children and giving them ghost genes, and he just wants to rest without the world falling apart.
Danny Fenton aka Hunter: This is a last-year-of-high-school Danny who activated the portal on accident but was NOT inside it, and so as such he runs around town with his parents’ equipment fighting off ghosts and protecting Amity Park from any who would try to do it harm. He’s great at technology, can repair and even possibly build any Fenton tech, and has a deep-seated dislike for ghosts.
Phantom aka formerly Danny Fenton when alive: This is a Danny who fully died when he entered the portal and as such is a full ghost. He has all kinds of powers, but he retains all of his humanity, mostly, and sticks close to Amity Park, protecting the town from all the other ghosts who would want to harm him. His parents are fully aware of who he used to be and still love and accept him.
Danielle “Danny” Alicia Fenton: This is a Danny - or, well, Dani - that is basically from a gender switch universe and is a halfa much like canon Danny with the same basic kind of timeline and growth arc, only, you know, without all the Butch Hartman stupid bits. She’s around 16/17 and is at the top of her game.
Danny-with-ghost-powers-but-no-Phantom-form-so-he-fights-with-disguises-and-weapons is along for the ride, too, because why not?
Then we have our “Miles” of the story who is a Danny Fenton who was just zapped by the Fenton portal and is barely aware he has ghost powers and now all these alternate versions of himself are running around and freaked doesn’t even begin to describe what he’s feeling.
Rex threw out the idea that The Problem would be Vlad, but then I’m like, nah… plot twist. He then said GiW and I’m like  p e r f e c t. So far the idea seems to be they made their own portal, want to destroy the Ghost Zone, again, but fucked up so well that they fucked up some fabric of Space-Time and, in my opinion, basically screwed with Clockwork’s powers and abilities and trapped him and his Citadel in some kind of void, but Clockwork had just enough time to pull in other Dannys from other universes because, well. If one Danny Phantom doesn’t do it then might as well leave it to six of them.
Oh, plot plot twist that Vlad is fucking sane and a halfa who actually helps protect his town and who the GiW kill just as Miles!Danny gets his powers to further mirror the actual movie.

The Not So Grim Reaper
Read on A03 Here Pairings: None Trigger Warnings: mild blood and cartoon style violence  Author: @burning-clutch (Team Ghost) Word count: 4291 Prompt by:  All-hail-trash-prince / KitKat Cat  FFN: the-trash-prince
-------
It was the third anniversary of the half death day of one Daniel Fenton and said teen was not exactly sure how to feel about the matter. He had been contacted by none other than the master of the timeline, Clockwork, to let him know that today was going to be a big important day for him…
 So he was understandably nervous…
The ancient ghost had taken a vested interest in him, sure, but Danny was pretty sure it was mostly to spite the Observants who had their hands in the old ghost’s work. Regardless of the reason though, when clockwork spoke or rather wrote him a note or some other such thing, he knew well it was important and he needed to heed whatever it was.                  At least it was a Saturday, so he didn’t need to worry about school, however, when his ghost sense went off causing him to exhale a wispy billow of cold air, he silently wished that the ghosts could give him a couple of days off a week as well.
With a reluctant sigh, Danny transformed in his bedroom before taking off and heading off towards the location he’d felt the strongest pull from the ectoplasmic disruption. It was downtown, a great start overall, though what was odd was as of yet there was no destruction… no running people trying desperately to escape an ethereal threat…
 It was uncomfortably calm actually…
Danny frowned and spun about trying to focus inwards to locate where the pull was. His eyes flashed open in an instant when he felt it, his ghost sense going off for a second time as he honed into the feeling. Whatever ghost had decided to pay him a visit today was powerful. Scarily so to elicit such a strong reaction from his ghost sense.
He flew up towards the ghost, he was eager but weary. There was no outright attack yet so he wanted to hold out hope that whatever ghost was up here was peaceful.
Danny was not prepared for a lanky ghost in a solid black robe looking out over the city from the highest building in Amity. Danny opened his mouth to speak but the stranger beat him to it. “Ah, Phantom… or do you prefer Daniel? Or some other such derivative of that?” the ghost asked, not even shifting in the slightest.
Danny was unnerved by that. The ghost had a deep voice, gruff but buttery smooth… it had a strange resonance in it that made it sound both soothing and unsettling at the same time. Still, Danny was on guard. Ghosts could go from zero to a hundred really fast, and he’d been bitten by that ruse far too often to have not learned at this point… Still, he was always an optimist and any chance to get out of this without a fight he’d take it.
“And you are?” Danny asked, trying to keep his tone as neutral as possible to this potentially dangerous and powerful spectre.
“Oh silly me, how rude.” The ghost chuckled out before turning around with a flourish. The ghost was bone white and rail thin, with ruby red eyes that shone with mirth around a deep navy blue iris. With the black cloak closed all Danny could see was the white glow around him and the elongated face of the ghost. As he laughed he revealed a long set of fangs both upper and lower hidden away by bone white lips.
“My name is Mortimer, Morty for short if you’d rather. Most people prefer it anyway.” the ghost, Morty mused with a small tap of his white slender finger to his lips. “Ah well, that’s not important what is as that you’re a prompt kid, and I like that. Pleasure,” he stuck out a hand to shake.
Danny eyed the hand suspiciously before grasping the pale appendage into his own. There was a cool and electric feeling radiating from Mortimer, that just screamed of power, but the literal grim grinning ghost before him seemed nice enough.
“Right, introductions out of the way, now we can get down to brass tax hm?” the pale ghost said releasing Danny’s hand and clapping his own together with a soft and chalky sounding smack.
“What?” Danny blinked stupidly. “You're a tax collector ghost?” he asked, making a face of confusion.
“What? Oh Ancients, no! I am a collector of sorts and you Phantom,-”
“Are going to be the newest thing in your weird collection? No thanks.” Danny scoffed having interrupted the ghost.
“You don’t even know what the offer is and besides it’s not exactly something you can refuse being what you are, and how you have handled yourself up until now,” Morty said with a flippant wave of his hand. “Your fate was sealed into this the moment Clockwork took an interest in you.”
“Clockwork? Where does he fit into this? With you?” Danny huffed feeling a little more angered by the second now.
“Well, it’s your third death day right?” Danny nodded. “Well, today is when you officially transition from a kid to a teen, well from a ghostly standpoint anyway,” Morty said with a tilt of his head revealing a thin whisp of flame like hair that looked to be hardly there at all on his ebony ectoplasmic flesh.
Danny blinked a few times as his mind caught up with that. This guy had mentioned Clockwork and Clockwork had mentioned today would be important… So…  “You’re who I was supposed to be looking out for today?” Danny asked.
“I mean maybe? Were you told a reaping recruiter was comin’ to get you?” Morty asked in kind. “Because if you were that makes this a whole lot simpler.”
“A what?” Danny barely got out before the other ghost grabbed his arm and thrust him forward into a ghost portal. Instantly Danny engaged his flight and rounded on Morty, fists flaring only to stop cold when he saw where he was brought.
 The literal valley of death.
Morty now had out a scythe as tall as he was, with a blade that was half the length of the pole. The blade, seemingly made of a blinding white plasma dipped into the portal and closed it in an instant. Morty then spun the scythe banishing the weapon to whatever unworld it had come from.
The weapon itself was impressive enough, but the fact that it matched the exact description shape and apparently portaling powers, from what he remembered the reaper ghosts were usually seen to wield… Danny was very glad he didn’t try to attack this ghost now.
“You really are a reaper.” Danny gasped out, staring wide eyed at Morty.
“Yes, I thought I’d mentioned that? No? Eh, well we’re here now and we’ve got work to do boy!” Morty said with a motion aimed at the halfa to get him to follow.
Reaper ghosts were dangerous, said to kill a living person with just a touch of their hand… Danny’s eyes widened as he stared down at the hand he’d shook Morty’s with earlier. Did that mean…? He rubbed at his neck as he followed, thankful to feel the slow and shallow ‘Ka-thump’ beneath his gloved hand.
“Wait, you mentioned you were a recruiter?” Danny asked moving quickly to catch up to the other ghost.
“Yep,” came the simple reply with a popping P. “And you’re here because-.”  he trailed off with a wave of his hand urging Danny to put two and two together.
“I’m being turned into a reaper?” Danny hazarded out his guess.
“Got it in one kid. Congrats. Morty said with a nod of approval.
 “Wait… Why me?”
“Well, the main one is you being a demi-ghost. You’re between the life and death binary system. Meaning, you yourself are the focal point in that scale of life and death,” the reaper responded.
“What about Vlad? He’s a halfa too…” Danny asked, genuinely curious.
“Indeed he is, but you are not like him in the slightest when it comes to personality. Tell me do you know what we do? What job does a reaper ghost have?” Morty asked, turning to look at Danny over his shoulder.
“You take the souls of the living, collecting them and forcing them to die…?” Danny asked nervously. “I don’t want to kill people though! Even if they are on some list or however you decide who’s time is up!” he argued to Morty. He really didn’t want to kill people…
“Ha! No, Why does everyone always think we deal in the living? Life and death are something that can’t be influenced by us.when your number’s up it ain’t us that's coming to kill you, nature does that plenty well on its own.”
 “Then-”
“We deal in the souls of ghosts,” Morty stated. “When a living thing dies, regardless of whether they become a ghost or not, the souls flow to the ghost zone. If they do become a ghost it means they had an obsession that was stronger then the pull of the zone’s core, the collective.” Morty explained.
“That much I know… It’s a basic concept.” Danny nodded curiously now as the reaper led him into a catacomb beneath the garden they were standing upon a moment ago.
“Right, well, what do you think happens to ghosts who’s obsessions get out of hand to the point the ghosts themselves are a danger? Or ghosts that get trapped in the human realm? That’s where we come in. if they’re a danger it’s our job to force them into the collective. And the easiest way is to slice the obsession right out of them, slicing through their core with your scythe. No obsession, no reason to be and the ghost is absorbed into the collective.”
“That’s still killing people! Even if they’re ghosts I still can’t-” Danny shook his head unable to think of himself potentially killing or ending a ghost… he would be no better than Dan then…
“Well you’re not killing or ending, you’re returning them to the collective. Alternatively, you can also repair a broken core so long as the ghost isn’t too far gone. Putting down troubled spirits is our main service as a reaper, secondary is that making sure the collective stays as exactly that, a collective. We make sure nothing in the zone ventures too close, and nothing in, comes out.” Morty said with a sharp look about him as he said that.
Danny offered the reaper a sheepish smile, before turning away from the glowing gaze to look about the catacombs. There were a lot of dirt torches on the walls and doors and really not much beyond that, but suddenly the door to his left was the most interesting thing on the planet.                  “You do not want to know what happens when something comes out of the collective and back into the ghost zone,” the reaper warned in a stern tone.
Danny flinched his gaze snapping back into the ruby eyes of the reaper.
“Besides most commonly it’s a reaper’s job to retrieve stranded ghosts from the human realm and lead them home to the zone. A starved ghost is not something to take lightly after all. And that brings us to why we’re recruiting you, and not the other halfa.”
“Because I’ve been doing that as it is?” Danny tried after a moment of the other ghost looking at him expectantly.
Morty grinned at that. “HA! Nice once again in one, and they said you were a dunce,” the ghost chuckled as they finally stopped to enter a large wooden door with a golden trim.
“Who did?” Danny asked as he followed the ghost inside.
“Don’t worry about it. Just pick out a scythe that calls out to you,” Morty waved him off dismissing the insult on his intelligence easily.
Danny couldn’t bother to rebuttal though when he laid eyes on the weaponry in the room. They were in a word gorgeous. All glowing with an array of coloured blades and handles and the teen’s eyes lit up like a kid in a candy store.
“Woah…” was about all he could get out as he gently reached out to try to grab a scythe with a bright white handle and a blue blade. As soon as his hand touched the pole Danny recoiled from the shock he’d received from the weapon.
“Nope, that one didn’t like you kid,” Morty said amused. “A reaper’s blade is special to them, and only one reaper can wield a blade, so much so that if a reaper is destroyed the blade shatters along with them. It’s an extension of yourself,” he explained.
“So then… how do you know?” Danny asked, trying to grab another one with a black pole and purple blade, only to recoil with a hiss and suck on his now burned finger.
“You really need me to answer that one kid?” the reaper asked leaning against the door and crossing his arms.
“...No…” Danny grumbled. The teen sighed looking at all the blades in the rows of weapons. They were all scythes and all slightly different, though some not by much to their neighbours. With a thoughtful frown, Danny explored the shelves.
Morty watched the teen go eyes shining with mirth as he looked on into the rows and rows of weapons. As a halfa, he would become an angel of rebirth, a force to be reckoned with and eventually a great ruler. Until his one-hundredth death day, he wouldn’t know of that tidbit and instead would remain in their ranks as a reaper.
Danny sighed after the tenth or so blade zapped him, he decided to try a new tactic. He closed his eyes and focused like he would when normally looking for a ghost with his ghost sense. These weapons felt like more than just average weapons after all perhaps they had a bit of life er, rather death in them?                  And so he focused and walked forward, moving along eyes closed until his hand rested in front of a rack. He blinked his eyes open and scanned the handles in front of him. It was easy to pick out the one that he thought was calling to him after that.
The handle was deep black with coloured sparkling glowing speckles all along the shaft, swirling and pulsing shifting slowly all along the handle. They looked so much like stars that Danny’s core fluttered eagerly at the sight of that alone. When he grabbed the handle, he felt the sheer burst of power that flowed through him and it was both intoxicating and worrisome.
He quickly regained his focus to stare at the white blade that pulsed and flickered with just the tiniest bit of blue. It reminded him of a comet’s tail with how it waved along when he moved the weapon. It was gorgeous and he knew it was his.
“Oh, that’s a beaut’!” Mort said with a low whistle almost right into Danny’s ear, causing the teen to jump into the air and float there staring angrily down at the reaper. “Now you’ve got that I gotta teach ya how to use it, well the basics, then from there you’re to come back here every week til we deem you ready to don a cloak.”
“I- right… so where do-” Danny didn’t even get the chance to ask as no sooner had he started Morty ripped a hole into space with his own summoned scythe and grabbed Danny dragging him through the portal. “Training…”
“En- Garde boy!” Morty called, pointing the butt end of his scythe to Danny. “First things first summoning and banishing your blade, then portals, and that should do it for today. I’ve no doubt you’ll figure out fighting with it on your own after that.”
“Yeah, ghost attacks in my town are far too common…” Danny admitted.
“Well now you can portal them away,” Morty said with a chuckle. “I think that’s why humans all think us to be bringers of death, we’re often seen bringing newly dead ghosts across the threshold to the zone… but you being a halfa you can stay in the human realm and not have to worry as much about ectoplasm intake. It gives you a huge advantage.”
With a final amused shake of his head, Morty went into army Sergeant mode. Like the flip of a switch, Danny was suddenly being worked over the proverbial coals. He wasn’t sure how long it took him to be able to summon and banish the scythe, but he was suddenly overly glad that there was only two things the reaper had wanted to work on.
Once he had successfully done the summon and banish three times in a row they moved on to portaling. And this was where Danny felt the drain.
He had to push his power into the blade to keep it rigid and allow himself to actually use the thing to cut. That alone was hard, but trying to force his power through the scythe to make the portal… after his third attempt, he was already almost ready to pass out.
Push the power into the blade then past it, force it to burst out of the blade and reach into the human realm, then spin the energy around the blade to pull open the portal. He knew the concept Morty had drilled it into his skull by this point, but for the life of him…
Danny panted leaning forward using his new weapon to hold himself up. He was almost ready to transform back…
“Is that all you got?” Morty taunted. “If it is we’ll be here a lot longer. You’re not getting out of here unless you can portal out yourself. Do you have a clear destination in mind?” he asked again for the fifth time.
 “Yes, I do… I -I don’t think I have enough power.” Danny wheezed out.
Morty shook his head. “You don’t, but your scythe does. You’re only supposed to use your power to supplement and direct that of your weapon. Now try again with that method.”
Danny sighed and readied himself before standing up once more. With a deep breath, he readied himself and tried to talk with his scythe as weird as it sounded at first to his tired brain.
“To Fenton works come on now… “ Danny urged. With a force of power from his weapon pulling from his own energy pool he swung his blade and sliced down. The curve went through space and sliced the fabric between dimensions open.
With a triumphant cheer, Danny whooped out to his teacher. “You’ve done well kid. Now remember, to close it stick the butt of your weapon into the centre of the portal and give a small pulse of energy.” Morty said with a bright grin. “And I’ll see you next week.”
With that, the Reaper ghost gave Danny a salute before opening a portal of his own and taking off to wherever it was he went when not on duty.
Danny on the other hand eagerly flew through the portal, dispelled that, banished his scythe and B lined into bed practically collapsing onto the plush surface with a tired and sore groan. It didn’t take him long after that to fall asleep.
 -.-.-.-
It was dinner time when Danny woke up, or rather Jazz had brought up some leftovers to him after telling his parents that he was sick… Still, it was an easy win for him to sleep the day away and he’ll take any chance he can get for that.
Jazz was easy to dissuade from pressuring him too much after he simply said ‘ghost problems’ she dropped it begrudgingly, and he was able to shoo her out of his room to eat his meal in relative peace.
Or at least half of it since his ghost sense went off not too long into his meal.
With an angered groan and a forlorn look to the mac and cheese loaf he had been enjoying, he transformed and headed out to knock some annoying ghost sideways… and for once he was almost hoping it would just be the box ghost.
When a missile came flying towards him a few seconds later he knew that hope was dashed. Even more so when Skulker moved in himself to try to toss a weighted net at him.
With a quick blast of his plasma the net was no more but the missile he’d dodged before rounded back on him, slamming into his back and launching him down to the ground.
He pulled himself up with a groan and a small huff of annoyance escaped him when he saw an almost identical him shaped hole right beside the one he’d just pulled himself out from. “Well at least I’m consistent…” he muttered in annoyance, before launching back up towards Skulker.
“I have you this time whelp!” The robotic hunter called out aiming a blast towards his prey.
Danny threw up a shield before grinning to himself and summoning his new weapon. “I got something new for my death day and I wanna try it out!” Danny called. “Hope it gives me a new edge.” he offered quickly, swinging the blade around, doing his best to look cool, before pointing the business end of his scythe at Skulker.
The self proclaimed Ghost Zone’s greatest hunter paused upon seeing the weapon. “That can not be real,” he scoffed out though the worry in his tone was clear as a crystal bell.
“Like my new toy Skulky? I got myself a new upgrade!” Danny proclaimed channelling a bit of power to solidify the wispy blade into a solid and keen blade. With one two handed strike the thing struck true and sliced Skulker’s hand clean off as if it were butter.
Skulker would be sweating if he were capable… as it were he could only stare at the halfa in dread and slight awe. “It’s real, isn’t it…” he gulped.
“Very.” Came Danny’s amused reply as he decided to try something. Focusing hard on the area in the ghost zone just outside Walker’s prison Danny turned and stuck the air right beside Skulker. To the teen’s absolute delight a portal appeared in all it’s spinning glory. “It worked!” He chirped before kicking at Skulker to toss him through it.
The bewildered robotic ghost hardly stood a chance and sailed through the portal with a yelp of dismay. To think the prey he’d been hunting all this time was a reaper!? It made him all the more valuable… Skulker reoriented himself before trying to zip back the way he’d come only for the portal to suddenly vanish leaving him stranded on this side.
Danny meanwhile, was elated. This was going to make his job of protecting Amity a whole lot simpler. He wouldn’t need to worry if he forgot his thermos ever again! It was a good feeling. He swirled his scythe around like the leader of a marching band with far too much flare, simply enjoying how natural the weapon felt to him.
His exceptional high feeling was cut short however when Valerie’s voice hit his ears. “What… What was that?”
Danny squawked, he didn’t even hear her coming up behind him! He clutched the scythe to his chest, the blade’s wispy form flickering along with his ghostly tail and aura. “What?” Danny blinked stupidly.
Ever since Danielle Danny had shared a shaky alliance with the huntress, though it was more of a stay out of my way and I won’t shoot directly at you, sort of thing. Still, any sort of relief from attacks, he’ll take.
“That scythe… it’s new.” Valerie commented suspiciously.
“Oh, Yeah! I’m three now so I got a cool toy! Apparently, I’m a reaper ghost. Neat huh?” Danny grinned doing his best to keep up his playful hero persona.  He spun his weapon around a few times before vanishing the thing and taking a bow.
“A reaper?” Valerie asked carefully, floating a little bit further back from the male now.
“Yep!” Danny exclaimed popping the P and straightening back up to properly face Valerie. “Oh! But I’m a reaper for ghosts, not one for humans,” Phantom added placatingly, hands up in a hopefully soothing manner. “You can still touch me it’s fine!” he added barely making out the frown behind the face shield the huntress wore.
Valerie grimaced further at that. “I’d really rather not.”
“No seriously, it’s fine. Come here! Let’s hug it out!” Danny called arms open wide and a shit eating grin in place.
Valerie called out a curse to him and fired a volley of blasts forcing the halfa to dodge and fly back. “Try that again and I’ll put a hole through your head.” she hissed.
Danny’s grin never faltered and instead simply used his bodily manipulation powers to do just that. While Valerie shuddered Danny tried again for the hug arms wide.
“Ugh, you're impossible.” She grumbled, firing a blast with pinpoint accuracy through the hole he’d made in his face.
“Come on Val~ That’s not nice.” Danny teased smiling brightly, only to yelp and zip off when she brought out her thermos threateningly.
The citizens of Amity park that night were witness to an hour’s long game of cat and mouse, as the Red Huntress chased the elusive Phantom about. Though if asked about it later Phantom would insist it was all in good fun. Even if the burn on his backside begged to argue otherwise…
And as Phantom learned more and more from the reaper ghosts, he became a better and more efficient hero to the people of Amity.
The approval ratings going up felt nice too.

Name:  Danny Fenton/Danny Phantom Species:  Halfa ( Human / Ghost Hybrid ), Human (formerly) Alignment:  Lawful Good
Backstory:
Danny Fenton was just a teenage boy, who snuck into his parents lab with his best friends, Tucker Foley and Sam Manson. Sam convincing Danny to go into the strange machine to view a world unseen, after putting on a hazmat suit for safety, then accidently turned on the machine from the inside, causing his molecules to get rearranged.
Danny Fenton fights other ghosts that come through the portal that are hostile, while helping other ghosts that aren't causing any harm. Things go smoothly until Vlad Masters causes his friends Sam and Tucker to get sick with a more fetal strain of ecto-acne. Danny in his misguided attempts to help save his friends, he has the idea to stop his friends from ever getting sick by preventing Vlad Masters from ever getting his powers in that initial incident with the ghost portal.
Clockwork begrudgingly accepting as Danny was always one to do things the hard way. Danny goes back in time to alter the timeline to avoid having to deal with Vlad Plasmius in the future only for him to create an entirely new timeline in the process.
As Danny learns about the new things in this timeline because of his one alteration, he does everything within his power to fix the present that he ended up ruining. Eventually, Danny repairs the fractured relationship between this timelines Maddie and Jack before returning to his own timeline, however... creating a whole new timeline doesn't come with out it's own consequenses.
As Clockwork had reset the timeline before Danny had initially meddled and made his alteration, the timeline that he created had not simply disappeared, instead the ghost zone had created a not so exact duplicate of Danny.
This is the Danny that Clockwork tells that he can never return home as his tampering with the timeline was irreparable and that he was never allowed to alter the timeline again, unless Clockwork himself saw it fit.
Danny was devastated to know his friends were doomed, however Clockwork spun it as a positive showing him that since Vlad Plasimus was never given ghost powers when he initially had, he had never created the fatal strain of Ecto Acne and that Sam and Tucker are just fine, and that he's welcome to fix the problems in the present going forward.
Danny then heads toward Maddie's portal, only to get tackled by a new version of Vlad Plasmius however weird his new form looks, Danny had the upper hand being a halfa for longer than Vlad had been in this timeline. But now that he was in the ghost zone, it would be better to bring him back to Earth and explain things to his alternate version of his parents... since that was better than leaving him in the ghost zone to make new ghost friends to teach him about these new powers.
Danny came through the portal explaining the situation to his mother, claiming that Clockwork had told him that the things he'd caused to this timeline were unable to be fixed. Maddie had noticed the change to her alternate son, but being the smart woman she was was able to see that the original Danny who had called her mom had made it back to his own timeline while a duplicate was made to compensate for the drastic change.
Danny now has to come to terms with his new timeline unaware that his original friend's would be safe, but now he had new supportive parents with a half ghost dad and his ghost hunting mom. He helped take apart Maddie's secret lab apart while leaving a note for the new froot loop he'll have to deal with now, as well as the other new changes in his life. He'll keep his ghost powers a secret for his own benefit rather than it being a necessity.

Chapter 9: Doppelganger
Danny let loose a barrage of (low powered) ecto-blasts, watched as Jazz’ shield wavered but held. His core rumbled in his chest, proud.
Because, sure. His presence here wasn’t ideal, and he supposed it wasn’t strictly necessary either. Based on what he had seen, Jazz would’ve managed alright on her own, too. But he was here, wasn’t he? So he might as well help.
Plus, there were only so many situations in which he got to help, and he got rewarded by people actually liking him. As Phantom, he saved Amity’s people over and over and over, and what did he get? Hatred and vitriol. Even the few that liked him changed their minds on a whim, like when Walker—
Oh.
Like when Walker attacked with Wulf.
Danny had completely forgotten about Wulf in this universe. Jazz never went into the Zone, so she never got in Walker’s bad graces. Which meant that the prison ghost never sicced Wulf on her.
Uh. Well. That was… That was something he needed to deal with. This Wulf might not know him, but still. He couldn’t leave the ghost in Walker’s hands.
“What are you thinking about?” Jazz asked, her voice snapping him out of his thoughts.
“Huh?” he said, eloquently.
She rolled her eyes. “You zoned out on me. What were you thinking of?”
He debated not telling her, but… he would have to go in the Zone to free Wulf. She needed to know if he wasn’t around to fight ghosts for her.
Instead he shrugged, a sheepish smile on his face. “I just remembered something I did in my timeline that hasn’t happened in this one. So I, uh. Figured I should go do that.”
“Why would you do that, instead of me?” she asked, raising a skeptical eyebrow. “It’s my universe, isn’t it?”
Danny made a face. “I mean, yeah, but it’s… complicated. Look, Jazz, it was a really rough confrontation, and one you avoided in this universe.”
“Okay, so?” she challenged, crossing her arms and looking every bit the stubborn teenager she was.
“So,” he said, “it makes more sense for me to handle it than for you to handle it. Besides, in my timeline I wasn’t strong enough to win, and I’m not gonna make you go through the same.”
“If you weren’t strong enough then, what makes you so certain you are now?” Her eyes were narrowed, bright and set.
He rolled his eyes. “Because I’ve got two years of additional experience. It’ll be fine, Jazz. And even if it won’t be, I need you to stay here. In my original timeline I got Sam and Tucker to bail me out when I took too long. I need you to be that backup in this universe, alright?”
She glared at him for a moment, before inclining her head in a nod. “I guess. But I’ll need to know where you’re going, then.”
“Right. In the Ghost Zone, kinda close to the Fenton Portal, there’s this huge purple building. That’s Walker’s prison, and that’s where I’m going to free Wulf. If I’m not back for our next training session, I need you to come look for me there.”
Her eyes grew wide. “A prison?! You’re expecting me to break you out of a prison?”
“Well, yeah. It’s a Ghost Zone prison. Regular world stuff, including us in our human forms, can go right through it. Which is why I’m not expecting it to be much trouble, but, well.” He shrugged. “You never know with Walker.”
Jazz squinted at him, but nodded, slowly. “I guess,” she grumbled, low. “Go flail at Walker. And Phantom… Danny?”
“Yeah?” he asked, meeting her eyes. She barely called him Danny anymore, wanted to keep him and her own brother separate. It was saved, now, for the special moments.
“Stay safe,” she told him.
He grinned back. “I promise, Jazz. I’ll be back before you know it.”
---
“Bye Mom, Dad!” Jazz yelled, and the front door closed. Danny peeked over the edge of the building he’d spent the night on, meeting her eye when she glanced up.
Jazz waved, a friendly gesture. Her eyes were narrowed, however, a warning. A non-verbal “stay safe”.
He waited for another moment or two before turning himself invisible. Go time.
Invisible, he left the roof. Phased through the walls and floors of FentonWorks until he reached the lab. It looked like his parents’ lab usually did; shiny chrome, with all kinds of half-assembled inventions scattered everywhere, and everything lit with the sharp white light of the ceilings lights, combined with the eerie green of the Portal.
Well, no time to get nostalgic and homesick. He had a job to do!
Determined, he pushed onward and through the Portal. The Ghost Zone was…
It was just like always, really. Maybe it was just because he didn’t go there all that often, but the place always looked the same to him. That’s kind of why he insisted on making maps, but he would just have to do without those for once. That would be fine, right? It was only one time.
It only took one time without supervision for him to get trapped in a different universe, his traitorous mind whispered to him. He ignored it.
Walker’s prison was pretty close to the Portal, but… but Danny didn’t want to go directly there. It was selfish, yes, but he wanted to see a little more of the Zone first.
Amity Park was always his home, but this Amity wasn’t his. He never felt quite right, quite at home. Always had to hide, stay out of sight. In the Ghost Zone, he could just be. No ghost would be able to tell that he didn’t belong, and even if they could, somehow? They wouldn’t care.
It was just… freeing. To go where he wanted to, and have no one care, not really. Because in here, the ghosts could tell how strong his core was. Most wouldn’t be eager to pick a fight with someone like him.
He flew, directionless and course-less. No destination in mind. Just flying for the sake of doing it.
Which, of course, was the moment he stumbled upon a familiar face.
The brakes of Johnny’s bike screeched as he tried to stop before hitting Danny, twisting the handlebars to dodge. Danny jerked himself the other way, but it wasn’t quite enough; his foot hooked on Johnny’s leg, forcing them both to a sudden stop.
Danny coughed, pushing himself back onto his feet. Johnny hadn’t fallen all the way down, but he was clinging onto his bike rather perilously.
“Shoot, sorry,” Danny apologized, one hand coming up to rub his neck. “Should’ve been paying a little more attention to where I was flying.”
Johnny squinted at him, a suspicious air about him. “Yeah, man. You lookin’ for more fights, or something?”
“No, just too caught up in my thoughts. Sorry.” He grinned sheepishly at Johnny, then realized… “Hey, where’s Kitty? Aren’t you two usually glued to each other’s sides?”
“How would you know?” Johnny asked, eyes narrowing even further. Then he scoffed, shook his head, and looked away. “If it matters, we’re fighting. Kitty’s jealous because I keep looking at other ladies even if we’re out together.”
“Ah.” Danny made a face and dropped his hand back to his side. “That’s… unfortunate. Not to get all up in your business or anything, but… have you tried talking it out? Communication is important, y’know.”
The biker ghost grumbled. “I don’t want relationship advice from a little punk like you. What’s it even matter to you? It’s not like we’re causing trouble in that city you and the girl are protecting.”
“You aren’t, no.” Danny finally placed this moment. If this matched with his universe, and chances were that it did, this was when Kitty overshadowed Paulina to make Johnny jealous. And he really didn’t want Jazz to deal with any of that—if she would even fall for it, knowing that it had happened to Danny. “Look, Johnny. I know Specter and I didn’t make a great impression when we met, but we’re not just fighting ghosts to protect humans. We want to make Amity a good place for everyone, and that includes you and Kitty whenever you come by. I don’t want you two to drag innocent humans into your fight, alright? Just talk it out like grownups, yeah?”
Johnny rolled his eyes. “Like grownups? You sound like a kid. How old do you think we are?”
“Not that old.” Danny shrugged. “Look, you get what I’m trying to say, don’t you? I might not look like it, but I know a thing or two about relationships. Talk with each other, and even if it doesn’t work out, at least you’ll know what’s up. Now you’re both agitated and frustrated and neither of you knows what’s up.”
“Ugh.” Johnny grunted. “Yeah, I guess that that makes sense.”
He settled back onto the bike properly, then leaned over the handlebars to point at Danny. “But I ain’t doing this for you, you hear me? I’m doing this for me, and for Kitty.”
“Of course,” Danny agreed peaceably. “Wouldn’t expect anything else.”
“You’d better believe it, punk.” Johnny squinted at him for a moment longer, but whatever he saw seemed to satisfy. His bike roared to life as Johnny drove off, following the narrow rocky pathways towards the Portal.
Danny watched him go for a moment, then heaved a steadying sigh. Well, that was one problem less for Jazz to deal with. But enough stalling; he should get going, before he runs into another (un)friendly face.
He made his way to the prison quickly, and then promptly realized that he hadn’t actually planned ahead this far. Well, unless you count “break in and free Wulf” as a plan, which… well. Danny might consider it a suitable plan, but Sam, and Tucker, and Jazz all keep telling him it’s not, so. Maybe he should plan ahead a little better.
The whine of a siren snapped Danny out of his thoughts and, oops. He probably should’ve moved a little further away from the prison he was trying to break into.
Some of Walker’s guards approached him, clubs raised threateningly. Danny’s muscles tensed, fingers balling into fists, energy pouring from his core.
But, no. He forcibly relaxed himself, let the guards drag him into the prison. Who needed to break into a prison, when you could just get brought into it? Sure, it was a little unconventional, but he managed to break free just fine in his own universe. The timing was a little off, but he was sure he could still count on the same ghosts.
Actually, that would explain why he hasn’t seen some of his regulars in a while. He had completely forgotten that Walker had arrested them in his timeline, and that they hadn’t gotten free until their mutual jailbreak.
Whoops.
Rather than face off against Walker, Danny is brought directly to the regular cells. Huh. Guess that he’s considered a regular rule-breaker now. More proof that Danny had so far been successful with hiding his half-ghost nature from the others, which was… good, probably? He wasn’t keen on Vlad figuring out that there were two half-ghosts around for him to convince.
It didn’t take long for the guards to return to bring Danny to the canteen and, ah. Yep. There were all those ghosts he’d been halfheartedly missing. He felt kind of bad—he should’ve remember sooner. None of these guys deserve to deal with Walker. Oh well. Live and learn, right? He could deal with the guilt later.
Danny quickly moved over, sitting down at the table with Skulker, Technus, Desiree, and the Lunch Lady. All four look rather confused to see him. Lunch Lady, especially, was squinting at him rather suspiciously.
“Whelp,” Skulker said, cautiously. “What are you doing here?”
“Organizing a jailbreak.” He shrugged, faux casual. “I could try to break in first, but, well. This was easier.”
Skulker nodded thoughtfully, but it was Desiree who spoke up, an odd tone to her voice. “You really are something else, aren’t you?”
“I try.” Danny grinned at her, then inclined his head towards Lunch Lady, remembering that they hadn’t met in this universe. “Hi, sorry, I don’t think we’ve met yet. I’m Phantom, and you’re the Lunch Lady, yeah? I heard about you from my sister, Specter.”
The suspicious expression faded from her face now that they had finally been introduced. She nodded back, hesitantly. “Yes. The girl, she was most helpful with fixing the menu.”
“Yeah, she’s good at that.” Danny turned back to the group as a whole, where Desiree nodded in agreement. “Anyway, like I was saying. Jailbreak. Any of you guys want to help?”
Skulker’s metallic face split in a ferocious grin, and Technus followed suit, baring his oddly angular teeth. Lunch Lady nodded forcefully, and Desiree gave an affirming smile as well.
All things considered, the actual jailbreak was almost laughably easy. Hell, Danny had managed it once while he was fourteen, and on much worse terms with these guys. Doing it now, with much better standings? Piece of cake.
They overwhelmed the guards quickly, storming through the prison’s hallways. Danny flew along for most of the way, until he reached the junction where everyone else would head to the exit.
“Skulker,” he called out, moving over to the empty pathway. “I’m gonna split. You guys stay safe, and remember Amity’s rules, yeah?”
Skulker, still grinning viciously, saluted him. “You have my respect, whelp. Don’t disappoint me.”
And with that, he turned around and re-joined the stream of escaping ghosts.
“Well, no point in stalling,” Danny muttered to himself, twisting towards the special holding cells again. “Let’s go, Fenton.”
He found Wulf’s cell easily enough, the hallways empty and abandoned. All guards must’ve gone to stop the massive outbreak. A lucky break.
Once Danny had located Wulf, he shifted back to human form. He could break Wulf’s cell door, but he was fairly sure that Wulf could escape himself once he was free of the collar and chains. No need to draw unneeded attention.
Danny phased through the door, shivering a little at the weird feeling. It was intangibility, sure, but it wasn’t quite right. It felt differently from regular intangibility. The lack of control, maybe?
It was dark in the cell; Danny could barely make out Wulf’s cowering shape. The ghost was curled up in the corner, his black fur lit jaggedly by the glowing chains around his wrists. Two bright green eyes peered out at him, but they were narrowed to slits. Wulf didn’t trust him.
That was okay, though. He could work with that.
Slowly he crept closer, knowing that Wulf couldn’t get away if he wanted to. Danny crouched in front of the ghost, reached out one hand, then paused. He doesn’t think he has enough power to break the collar in human form. He’ll have to shift, making Wulf the first full ghost in this universe to know that Danny is half ghost.
He swallowed away his hesitation, and backed up a few steps.
Light flashed, the cell lit up bright by his transformation. He tried to make it quick, as if he could coax his shift to do such things, but it wasn’t enough. Wulf had balled up even further, his ears flattened to his neck. Scared. Scared of what Danny might do to him.
Danny crept closer again, hands raised placatingly. He wished he knew more Esperanto, wished that he could assure Wulf of his intentions. Instead he had to settle for trying to emit reassurance, his core rumbling soothingly in his chest.
He didn’t know if it worked, or if Wulf was just too scared to fight back, but Danny got his hands on Wulf’s collar. He swallowed away the hesitation, the worry, and wriggled his fingers in the tight space between the metal and Wulf’s soft fur.
And he pulled.
Energy poured from his core, through his arms and his fingers. Sparked bright green, straight into the metal of the collar.
And he pulled.
With a hiss—or a sizzle—the collar released. It clattered onto the stone floor, emitting a shrill beep as it deactivated.
Wulf opened one hesitant eye, flicking it to the collar and then back to Danny. He tried to shoot the ghost a reassuring grin, taking his hands off of Wulf’s neck again.
Rather than try to puzzle out the Esperanto, he reached for the chains on Wulf’s wrists, pausing before he actually touched them. The wide green eyes followed his movement, and stilled for a moment.
Then Wulf nodded.
With this permission granted, Danny quickly stuck his fingers underneath the metal cuffs. These weren’t electronic, but pure ecto-steel. All he would need for these was a bit of pure ghost-powered strength.
The cuff tore open with the groan and creak of metal. Danny quickly moved over to do the same to the other cuff, freeing Wulf entirely.
When the second chain fell away, clanging against the back of the cell, Danny stood up. Backed away from Wulf again.
Wulf hesitantly raised up as well, shoulders drawn high and head held low. His ears were still flattened, and his tail twitched uncertainly.
The ghost licked his lips, then asked, haltingly, in Esperanto, “Why did you help me?”
“It’s a long story,” Danny answered with a shrug. Even if he wanted to explain, he couldn’t. He wasn’t that fluent in Esperanto. “But you are free now.”
“Free?” Wulf repeated, ears slowly rising up. His eyes seemed extra bright, now, and didn’t move away from Danny. His tail twitched more vigorously, like a restrained wag. “I… am free?”
“Well…” Danny shrugged vaguely, unsure of how to make it any more clear. “Uh, yeah.”
Realizing that he’d said the last in English, he instead settled for making vague shooing motions at Wulf.
This, at least, had some effect on the ghost. Wulf’s muscles coiled, and with a sudden twitch, he unsheathed his claws.
Except the ghost bounded forward, suddenly, lunging towards Danny. He had just a single moment of doubt, had he somehow misjudged this situation?, before Wulf’s furry arm wrapped around him, dragging him along. He could hear a tearing noise, and then suddenly the cell was gone.
Oh. Of course. Wulf had grabbed him and taken them outside Walker’s prison. That made perfect sense.
Wulf had perked up now that they were outside the prison—and the Ghost Zone as a whole—because he stood tall again, his ears perked up and his tail wagging.
“Tell the story?” Wulf asked, cocking his head at Danny. “Why did you free me?”
Danny hesitated, taking a moment to look around them. They seemed to be in the woods somewhere in the human world, but he didn’t know where, exactly. He turned back to Wulf with an apologetic face. “I don’t speak very good Esperanto,” he explained. “Sorry.”
He wished he could explain, though. Wulf already knew about him being half-ghost, and Danny was sure he could trust Wulf. And—
And Wulf could make portals between worlds. Maybe he could even make one home.
Danny’s core churned with an unnameable emotion. Pain, regret, guilt. Could he somehow…
With a flash, he shifted back to human form. He patted down his trousers, quickly, ignoring Wulf’s confused look.
There! Danny pulled his phone out of his pocket, holding down the power button. He had realized, very quickly after coming here, that his phone was almost completely useless. He could use it for entertainment, sure, but no one could call or text him, and he couldn’t charge it regularly enough for it to really be useful. So he had turned it off, intending to save the charge so he could call his friends when he got home.
He opened the internet browser, quickly navigating to Google Translate. His fingers darted over the keyboard, and when he was happy with his message, he clicked the translate button. It wouldn’t be perfect, sure, but hopefully it would get the message across.
“It is a weird complicated story,” his phone started reciting, and Wulf perked up even further. He crept in a little closer, focus entirely on the phone in Danny’s hand as it continued to speak. “I am actually from a different universe. I am half ghost, and I accidentally traveled through a portal to this world. In my own universe, we are friends. Walker tried to have you attack me, but my friends and I took off your collar, and you helped me protect my town. I know that you are not the same Wulf, but I wanted to help you anyway, to repay you for everything you have done for me.”
They waited in silence for a moment, then Wulf nodded, a grin appearing on his face. “I am glad,” he said, tail wagging energetically, “that in another universe, I have made a friend so good that it carried over to another world entirely.”
Danny didn’t quite understand that whole thing, but he thought he got the gist anyway. He grinned back. “Well, you’re my friend.”
“Still, I wish I could help.” Wulf flexed his paws, almost experimentally, but his grin faltered. “I wish I could open a portal home for you, but I can’t. Only between here and the Ghost Zone.”
His core stuttered, churned painfully. That figured. He hadn’t thought that Wulf could, not really, but still. It hurt.
“It’s not your fault,” he assured Wulf anyway, patting his massive furry forearm. “I’ll figure something out.”
“I still want to do something in return,” Wulf insisted, shoving his head against Danny’s shoulder. “Anything to help my friend.”
Well, now his core heaved for an entirely different reason. Danny moved his hand to Wulf’s forehead, thinking it over. With one hand, he tapped out a new message on his phone.
“There is one option,” it started, and Wulf’s ears twisted towards the phone again. “In this universe, someone else is half ghost in my place. My sister. She is just as young as I was, and has less support. I think she will be okay, but it would be nice to be sure.”
Wulf pulled his head away from Danny’s shoulder, nodding vigorously. “It would be my pleasure to watch over your sister in your stead.”
“Good.” Danny rubbed his hand through Wulf’s fur, rugged but surprisingly soft, considering the circumstances. “Thank you, Wulf.”
It would be good to know that Jazz was safe when he left.
If he ever got to leave.
---
Harried footsteps echoed through the street as Danny turned down an alley. The heavy footfalls behind him continued; both Sam and Tucker wore boots instead of sneakers.
Light flashed in front of them, pale blue light bouncing off of the alley’s walls. Danny stopped, Sam and Tucker right behind him.
He cleared his throat, and the ghost mere feet away startled visibly. Its—his—bright green eyes shot upwards, towards Danny. The expression was so human, far more human than his parents’ research suggested. And it was undeniably guilty.
The ghost knew exactly who Danny was.
Slowly, the ghost clipped the Fenton Thermos in his hands back onto his white belt. From this close, Danny could tell that the entire outfit closely resembled the jumpsuit his parents had made for him, with the colors inverted. He wondered, darkly, how often the ghost had spied on them to mimic it so closely.
“Um,” the ghost said, then halted, like he hadn’t quite thought out what he actually wanted to say. He fidgeted with the cuff of one of his white gloves. His eyes, wide and unnaturally bright green, darted between the three humans opposing him.
“We need to talk,” Danny told him, trying to make it sound like a threat. They hadn’t brought anything to trap the ghost, and even if he appeared cornered, Danny knew he wasn’t. Intangibility was a bitch.
The ghost shifted, like he was strongly contemplating leaving. He grimaced. “Well, um. What about? It’s not like we’ve… met, ha ha.”
Really, he could not look any more awkward. It was almost impressive. If only the situation had been, well. Not this.
Danny glared at the ghost, and Phantom made a face. He didn’t leave.
“Don’t be an idiot,” Danny snapped. His nails dug into his palms as he clenched his fists. “I don’t know who you are, and quite frankly, I don’t give a fuck. You can haunt Amity Park all you want, and I wouldn’t give a single damn! But you’re messing with my sister, and I can’t let that fucking slide.”
Phantom shifted guiltily. He opened his mouth, but Danny cut him off before he could speak.
“I don’t want to hear it! Whatever dumb excuse you’re gonna give, I don’t want it. I know Specter is my sister, that she’s Jazz. I saw her go from human to ghost, when you two were fighting that shadow-y ghost. She was knocked out, you know that? And when she got up, she just went back out again, and I had to let her! Because I couldn’t tell her I know! Because you somehow convinced her that— that you’re her brother, or whatever!”
Phantom’s mouth tightened into a thin line. His eyes, still luminous and green, narrowed. He waited for several seconds after Danny stopped talking, before asking, caustic, “Are you finished?”
“No!” Danny snapped back. “You’re a fucked-up mess of a ghost, and you don’t even seem to realize how fucked up any of this is! You fucking modeled yourself after me, like an image of me as a fucking ghost! And somehow you convinced Jazz that you really are me, that you’re her actual brother, yet she barely talks to me. She probably spends more time with you than with me, because she doesn’t realize there’s a difference! And it’s your goddamn fault!”
The ghost lunged forward, and Danny’s heart stuttered, missed a beat. For a moment, he’d forgotten than he’d been yelling at a being strong enough to eviscerate him with barely any effort.
But Phantom didn’t cross the entire distance between them. He landed on the ground with such force that dust blew away, but without a single noise.
Light flashed through the alley again, bright white like lightning. It danced around Phantom, so blinding that Danny was forced to close his eyes. When it faded, when he could see again…
It was like looking in a mirror.
Phantom looked… human. His flesh was visibly warmer, the tone just slightly pinker, and his eyes were as sky blue as Danny’s own. His hair, previously white as snow, was now jet black. And his characteristic jumpsuit, the feature he seemed to have stolen right from the adult Fentons, had been replaced by clothes that could’ve been Danny’s own. A little more ragged than he would normally prefer them, sure, but still…
“Wow,” Sam breathed behind Danny, barely audible.
And the ghost—human?—smirked, wide and cocky. He threw out his hands demonstratively. “And that’s where you’re wrong! Because I am her brother, pal.”
Danny stepped forward before he really knew it, his hands wrapped up in Phantom’s shirt. It was like he was moving on auto-pilot, taking a backseat in the whole process.
His brain supplied, remarkably unhelpfully, that Phantom’s shirt felt oddly real. Not cold or slick like ectoplasmic clothing.
“You ain’t shit,” Danny growled in Phantom’s face, in that mirror image of his own. “You think you’re a big fucking deal, some kinda big savior, protecting our weak pathetic fleshy people from the ghost invasion, but you’re nothing. It’s all a fucking cover so no one can see the damage you’re really doing.”
Phantom’s eyes narrowed, the irises briefly flooding with bright green before they faded back to blue. “You don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said, coldly. His hands wrapped around Danny’s wrists. They were chilly, too cold. There was no force behind them.
“Don’t I? You’re out here, pretending to be Jazz’ brother, and you don’t expect me to be pissed about that? Shouldn’t you know better?” He let go of Phantom’s shirt. The last thing he needed was for the ghost to break his wrists when it got tired of being held.
“I’m not pretending,” Phantom hissed, eyes narrowed. “And I don’t give a damn about what you think of me. I’ve lived through the whole town hating me, through my own parents hating me. You’re nothing compared to all that.”
Sam scoffed, somewhere behind Danny, and he jerked. He’d almost forgotten that his friends were here, too.
“If you care so little about our opinions, why are you still here?”
Phantom’s mouth tightened again, his eyes darting over to Sam. His eyebrows were drawn together. He almost looked pained. “That’s… complicated.”
“More complicated than pretending to be Danny Fenton, son of avid ghost hunters?” Tucker asked, scathingly. “More complicated than pretending to be, what, half ghost?”
“None of that is pretend,” Phantom snarled. His eyes flickered green again as he clenched his fists. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Yeah, because you’re not telling us, dude.” Tucker huffed, crossing his arms. His eyes were hard.
“I…” Phantom halted, then shook his head. “I can’t. I shouldn’t.” He refused to meet Tucker’s eyes. Or Sam’s.
He looked uncomfortably human.
“You gotta tell us something,” Danny snapped at the ghost. Because that’s what Phantom was. Just a ghost. “You’re messing with my sister. And even if you’re not actively pretending to be me, well. I find it hard to believe that you’re missing the implications here.”
Phantom snorted. “I’m not an idiot, yeah. Why do you think no one but Jazz has seen me like this yet?”
Some cold burrowed in Danny’s chest. No one but Jazz. So that meant that Jazz had seen it. Had seen Phantom pull off a shift so similar to her own, which had made him look just like Danny.
“No one but Jazz, and now us,” Sam pointed out. “Why break the pattern for us?”
Phantom shrugged. His eyes had moved over to Sam, but he dragged them back to Danny almost immediately. “I fucked up.”
“So now what?” she asked, crossing her arms as well. “Are you finally going to tell us why this is all so complicated? Or are you going to continue pretending Tucker and I don’t exist?”
The ghost flushed, suddenly, his shoulders coming up. Somehow, against all logic, it was red.
Ghosts were supposed to flush green, weren’t they?
“It’s—”
“Complicated?” Tucker finished for him, dryly. “Try something new, man.”
“I’m…” Phantom paused again, then sighed. His shoulders sunk down like the weight of the world was on him. He looked so forlorn that Danny almost felt guilty.
Phantom reached into one of his pockets, producing a mobile phone. It looked remarkably modern, if a little scuffed up. Was that stolen?
It was quiet for a few moments as Phantom messed around with the phone. Finally, however, he seemed satisfied. He held it out towards the three of them.
Sam and Tucker leaned in closer, and Danny took the phone from Phantom. On the screen was a photo of… the three of them. But not one they had taken, he was sure. They were in his parents lab, he thought, and they were all smiling.
“Keep scrolling,” Phantom said. Danny did.
The next photo was of just Sam and Tucker. They were still in the lab, and both holding ecto-weaponry. In front of them was some sort of shooting range, with shots clustered on two of the targets. They looked like they were arguing, but it was good-natured.
They definitely hadn’t taken this photo. How had Phantom gotten it? Were there more shapeshifting ghosts like him?
Danny’s stomach squirmed. Sam reached over his hands to click over to the next photo. Sam stood impassively, arms crossed, watching Tucker. Tucker, who seemed to be holding an energetic conversation with an enormous bipedal wolf. A ghost wolf.
“Keep going,” Phantom instructed, quietly.
It was the three of them again, except… except Phantom was there, instead of Danny. His green eyes were scrunched up, his smile wide. Sam and Tucker, on either side of him, were grinning equally widely. A smear of green ectoplasm sat on Sam’s cheek, but she didn’t seem to care.
“You’ll know,” Phantom told them, and his voice was almost impossible to make out over the rushing sound in Danny’s ears. The phone shook with such force that he could barely hit the button to move over to the next picture.
It was a picture of the living room of their house. Jazz sat on the couch, a book held loosely in her hand. She wasn’t looking at it, though. No, she was looking at Danny, who seemed to have fallen asleep next to her. He leaned against her, his head on her shoulder. Danny looked about sixteen, the right age, but Jazz…
Jazz looked like she was eighteen.
Phantom took the phone back from Danny’s stiff fingers. “Like I said. Complicated.”
“What the hell, dude.” Tucker blinked at the two of them, at Danny and at Phantom. “What the fuck was that?”
The ghost shrugged loosely. “I’m sure you can figure that out yourself.” He pressed the power button on his phone, then stuffed it back in his pocket.
“So you’re, what. From another universe?” Sam asked. Her voice was a mixture of disbelief and awe, Danny thought, but it was hard to say for sure.
“Basically.” Phantom shrugged. He seemed awkward, now, but no closer to fleeing than he was at the start. “I kind of… accidentally came here. Portals in the Ghost Zone can lead to any point in time, but apparently to different worlds as well. I… didn’t realize. Didn’t realize I wasn’t home until I met… Jazz.”
“So you lied to her.” Danny frowned at him. It sounded… well, like bullshit, but he supposed it was possible. He couldn’t think of a more likely explanation, at least. “You made her believe that you were me.”
“No,” Phantom denied immediately, shaking his head. “No, never. I told her the truth from the start. She knows I’m not you. I’m just training her, just her mentor.”
“Then why does she barely spend time with me anymore? Why does she spend more time with you than with me?”
“You think she enjoys that?” Phantom made a face, lip curled in… disgust? “Fuck, dude. She’s been trying to spend time with you for ages. She hates that she’s spending more time with me than with you. She doesn’t even call me Danny, only Phantom. It’s not me, it’s you.”
Danny’s heart felt like it stopped, like it had turned into a clump of ice lodged in his chest.
“So if Jazz isn’t trying to use you as a replacement for her brother, why is she spending so much time with you?” Sam asked while Danny was still trying to process this revelation.
Phantom rolled his eyes, then raised a hand. Blue light flashed, and then suddenly he had… something. Was twirling something smooth and shiny between his fingers. Ice? Ice was something Phantom could do, right? “If you suddenly became half-ghost, and ran into a half-ghost version of someone you knew, a half-ghost with two-and-a-half years of experience, wouldn’t you spend time with them?”
He clenched his fist, and suddenly the ice was gone. Phantom’s hand wasn’t even wet. “I offered to teach her while I was around, and I help fight ghosts so she’s not as overwhelmed as I was. And the timelines seem pretty similar so far, so I know roughly what’s coming up, and I can help her figure out the tougher ghosts.”
“You’re a source of information,” Tucker said, understanding in his voice. Realization dawned on Danny, too. Phantom wasn’t a replacement; he was the half-ghost equivalent of a library. Jazz didn’t get comfort from him because he was family, but because he knew.
“Yeah, basically.” Phantom shrugged, but he didn’t seem as tense anymore. “And backup. I had… well, you two. If I ever got in over my head, I was backed up by my Sam and Tucker, and later on, by my older sister Jazz as well. But your Jazz, this Jazz, she doesn’t have that.”
“But what about your own world?” Sam narrowed her eyes at Phantom, considering. “If you were the only half-ghost there, shouldn’t you go back? Don’t they miss you?”
Phantom clicked his tongue. “I can’t. Portals in the Ghost Zone are unreliable, so I have no way of making sure I get there. It’s better if I stick around here, where I have some system in place, and where I can help. Plus, if I stay in one place I’ll be easier to find.”
“I’m not saying that Sam and Tucker aren’t great,” Danny said, past the emotions still lodged in his throat, “But are you really expecting those two to find you in a different universe?”
Sam scowled at him, and the itch in his neck made him suspect that Tucker was doing the same from behind him. What? He was just being realistic!
“Them, or Jazz.” Phantom shrugged at his incredulous look. “There’s this invention that can track me to bizarre extents. Jazz once used it to send me a message while I was ten years in the future. And if that doesn’t work, I have a ghost ally who owns an enchanted map, which can find portals to anywhere and anywhen you want, as long as it’s in the Ghost Zone.”
A heavy silence fell. Apparently Danny wasn’t the only one who saw the problem with that.
“So then why aren’t they here yet?” Tucker finally asked, conceding defeat. “You’ve been here for weeks, man.”
Phantom’s shoulders sunk down even further, his face falling. “Yeah,” he agreed. “I know.”
“So… now what?” Sam frowned at Phantom. “You’re just gonna stay here indefinitely?”
“Might as well.” Phantom sighed, heavy and exhausted. “Like I said, there’s no point in going looking for a portal back. Wulf can’t make a portal like that, and Frostbite only let me use the map because I fought the Ghost King. I haven’t done that in this universe, so there’s no way he’ll trust me with that priceless artifact.”
“Sounds rough.” Tucker threw a look at Danny, then Sam, then Phantom again. “Can we help? You, or Jazz?”
Phantom shrugged once more. “I mean, I don’t know. My Jazz figured out my secret at the same time as you guys figured out Jazz, but she held off with telling me because she figured I could manage with Sam and Tucker. It wasn’t until that time traveling thing during the CAT test that she dropped enough of a hint for me.”
“Alright, well…” Danny took a deep fortifying breath. “How about this. You keep up your training with Jazz, but stay in touch with us. I want to know what’s going on, and I want to keep an eye on you. If she looks like she needs us… needs me, we’ll tell her we know. Until then…”
“You want to get closer again.” Phantom nodded, and Danny was startled at how understanding he seemed. “Hey, don’t give me that look. I grew apart from my older sibling too, when I became half-ghost. Then we suddenly got closer again, after she figured me out.”
“Oh.” Danny licked his lips. He wasn’t sure if it was meant to be comforting, but… it made him feel better anyway. Knowing that even Jazz, perfectly brilliant human being, had made this mistake.
There was still room for things to get better.
“Well, let us know if you need anything,” Sam insisted. “As you probably know, I’m rich. I could easily hide you in our mansion if you need to sleep somewhere that isn’t a rooftop, or whatever you’ve been doing so far.”
That startled a laugh out of Phantom. “Jazz has been letting me use her bed while she’s at school,” he admitted, grinning weakly. “But thanks, I might take you up on that. I’ve gotten seriously nocturnal though, fair warning.”

AWWHH tysm for the compliments <3 really made me smile!! Speaking of your Danny Phantom AU, I have another question about it!: Do Sam and Tucker like. Know that Danny's half-ghost? This question spawns from the little comic you made a few days ago and I noticed that they didn't... seem to know? If they do indeed not know, will they ever find out?- Jevil Anon
ah i see how that'd be confusing! that was a "nobody knows AU" (which was probs easy to miss me saying that with all that text i added to the post).
basically, it's a fandom-known au where, well, as its says on the tin: nobody knows Danny's the phantom. the reason i drew that AU was because I'm doing DannyMay, a phandom event where throughout all of May, we follow a list of themed prompts for the full month.
my AU is more so my "take" on the show's story, blending fanon and canon. aspects of my take have some fanon headcanons (some are my own, but most are common fanon):
(read more cause its long)
Danny kept his freckles growing up
said freckles glow in ghost form (which look like stars! Danny loves astronomy so its a fun character detail)
blue Phantom (to match how Vlad and Dan are blue)
^ mine's reasoning is that Danny's form/powers are based on being photographed by Sam at his time of death
Danny has lichtenberg scars (from being electrocuted)
having electric powers (though mine is actually light based powers that has electricity as an off shoot)
^ powers are more limited in general, just standard ghost abilities and the above
trans and Latino Danny
the full cast is some form of LGBTQA+
Jazz takes after her father, being more bulky. (cause no way both kids would be scrawny!)
tucker is a twitch streamer. his popularity stagnates/shrinks once he becomes busy with ghost hunting
Team Phantom has a TikTok
the portal is sentient, their name is Liminal Gates
the ghost portal was funded by Vlad (who has a different relationship with the Fentons than in canon) and has it hushed up by Nondisclosure Agreements.
Slow burn Vlad is evil reveal
season 3 didn't happen LMAO
Sam uses she/them and Clockwork use they/them
Dani (with an I) is called Ellie (this is for accessibility reasons like screen readers as well for general less confusion)
Ellie is not a clone but rather an alternative timeline Danny with a drastically different life. (because I think cloning is too morally horrific and illogical to write)
Slow burn Villain Ellie Masters (complete with a full story arc)
ghosts aren't aliens but rather traditional ghosts (for the most part, there's exceptions)
after a while, Danny's main objective is helping ghosts cross over to the after life.
ghost zone is a different spacial dimension (with a bunch of pseudo science takes from a high-school understanding of dimensions LOL)
pure ectoplasm is corrosive to flesh
halfas are time paradoxes, they're fusions of multiple timelines merged into one person
Fanon made characters: Wes Weston and his older brother, Kyle Weston. (extremely loosely based on background characters)
I think that's it for now! I'm sure five minutes from now I'll think of something and go "darn it!"
a lot of that is self indulgent or part of my "i'll work on this AU once in a while" attitude over the last few years -w- usually i'll check the DP tag once a month or so, but I'll have times (like rn) where I hyper-fixate on it. DannyMay really being a big reason I'm focusing so hard as well

How about 20 for Tucker?
What-ifs/Alternate Timelines
Hmmm I had a couple of these in my head~
AU idea where Tucker swapped roles with one of his friends (either being a goth like Sam or a Halfa like Danny, those are always entertaining to see).
AU idea where Tucker was actually one of the popular kids while Danny and Sam were the unpopular ones. Tuck wouldn’t be a bully like Dash or Paulina, but he’d still have an attitude of feeling “too cool” to hang with the likes of Danny or Sam. Would also be luckier with the ladies since he’d dress in a more “hip” style and actually behaving like a naturally cool guy (instead of trying too hard to be like one in the show).
AU where Tucker survived the explosion from TUE, somehow ended up siding with the GIW where he uses his tech skills to aid in their cause. I also thought of him having a wife at this time too (idk who yet), and since she’d be expecting their first kid it’d give Tucker a bigger incentive to try and stop Dan to protect his own growing family.
