Ok so my friend and I were talking. And we came up with in interesting theory.

We think that the Combine Advisors feed off brain waves. We already know they are telepathic, and we know their tongue taps right into the brain stem and they can absorb information through that, so it isn't much of a stretch to think they can metabolize them. It also makes sense as to why they had the Vortigaunts enslaved, since they have a huge mind, that's a constant feed of "food". This could be supported by us knowing they have experimented on Vortigaunts (Vorti tells us this), which could be them trying to find a way back to connect to the hive mind.

It also makes sense as to why they have humans work for them. We only see them use their tongue to kill one person, and he wasn't useful to them. If they had a way to insert without killing, that would lean into the idea they can feed off of the humans they have in the Citadel.

But yeah. That's the theory. I just think it's interesting.
