Tuesday 2nd January 2023
Hey journal so yesterday I did not end up getting the buses as they kept on dissapearing of the app and kept on saying they are going to be longer and longer. Anyways so my mum ended up picking me up. Whilst waiting I went to Maccies then realised it was still busy. Then there was this delivery driver being a dickhead and saying they are talking and she can do are job with her she’s closed. Anyways this pissed me off but I did not have my uniform on so that’s why she said it so obviously. I ended up leaving without getting food. I then walked to sainsburys in hopes to get shower gel and shampoo. As I have my tattoo today and I needed some sensitive stuff for the skin. So I found shower gel. But I couldn’t find shampoo to save my life. Then my mum started calling but I was just getting messages that she called from my phone as I had to connection in the shop. So I ended up just leaving with shower gel and that’s it. After this I got in the car and she dropped me off into town as my gym was shut. So I went to pure gym. I also went to pure gym with Morgan yesterday. Before starting my workout I got myself a protein bar and an energy drink. Anyways I did a light session. Where we focused on back a tiny amount of legs and also triceps. He left at 7pm then I did a few exercises without him then left. Once I left there were no buses. So my mum picked me up. Before picking me up she told me to get some food. So I got two grilled wrap meals from Maccies for the protein. I then after that walked to the doctors car park as I thought she was there. Then I realised she was parked in Maccies car park. So she quickly drove to me. Once I got home, I had my food. Then after having my food I had some protein powder and a banana. I also then after this got ready for bed. However I felt really sick as I just had milk and banana together. So I ended up taking some tablets as I felt like I was going to be sick and felt really bloated. Whilst I waited to feel a little better I made a few tiktoks and also did my mental health one day 290 I think it was. Then I went to bed. Now for this morning I overslept as I was utterly exhausted from the past few days and this is my 6 day on the trot working. Anyways it’s got up and got dropped of to work. I ended up being about 30 minutes late to work. Once I got work I’ve just been on instore, dropping hash and helping on present as well. It has been ok to be fair no where near as bad as yesterday, and yesterday was awful. Anyways speak to you later journal, bye journal!

“Doing 10 more reps is not going to make you feel any better you know.”
Jungkook grunts, before placing the weight back on the rack. 
“You’ve been at it for hours. Take a break man.” Seokjin takes another sip from his water bottle, using the towel draped over his shoulder to wipe the trickle of sweat that’s started to run down from his forehead.
It had only been a couple of weeks ago that Seokjin started dragging the younger male along with him to the gym. He thought it’d take more convincing, but the mention of girls being attracted to fit guys was all it took to get Jungkook off the couch he’s been playing video games on for the past few months. He didn’t expect Jungkook to become this obsessed with weight training, didn’t think the nerd had it in him, but boy was he wrong. 
“I’m this close to hitting my goal body fat percentage.” Jungkook sits up from the bench and grabs his usual blend of protein powder and mineral water, biceps twitching as he lifts the bottle to pour the liquid down his throat.
“Don’t tell me you’re already treating this like gaming stats.”
“You need to have goals in your life.” 
“What’s the point? You don’t even take shirtless post-workout selfies.” Seokjin turns to face the mirror and begins stretching, admiring his self-proclaimed perfect face in the process. “And if you think your newly developed muscles are going to just translate over to your nonexistent social skills, I have some bad news for you bro.” 
“I just want to see improvement ok?” Jungkook defends, walking over to the next station. 
“You seriously think I don’t know the real reason you’re pushing yourself so hard?” Seokjin glances over to eye the sweaty boy who’s now moved on to legs. “You literally hid behind a bush when you saw her walking towards you last week.”
“I was still in my sweaty gym clothes!” Jungkook exclaims, as if it could pass as an excuse. 
“And what about the time you kept laughing after everything she said, even when it wasn’t meant to be funny?
“I was nervous.”
“When are you not when you’re around her?”
Jungkook doesn’t have a response to that. He knows Seokjin knows. There’s no point in hiding the fact that he’s harbored a crush on you since he saw you walking down the halls for the first time in high school.
“Do you want me to just talk to her for you?”
“What the hell? No!” Jungkook snaps back. “I mean, what would you even say?”
“Umm, hey Y/N, I have a friend who’s a couple years younger than both you and I. You know that kid who’s super awkward around new people and especially you because he’s had a huge crush on you for years now. So…you interested in going on a date with him?” Seokjin cracks up, unrestrained windshield wiper laugh reverberating through the gym making some annoyed heads turn.
“Fuck off” Jungkook mutters, rolling his eyes.
“Hey, I’m just trying to help.”
“Remind me why we’re friends?”
“Because I’m in the same year as her, and you kept asking me for updates when I left for college and you were still stuck in high school.”
Jungkook groans, he knew that decision would come back to haunt him, but he just couldn’t help himself back then could he?
 …
 “Dude” Taehyung sighs. “Just ask her out. The worst she can say is no.” He proceeds to pick up his controller after stuffing a hand full of chips into his mouth, talking mid-chew with eyes still glued to the screen.
“I can’t. It’ll crush every dream I’ve ever had.” Jungkook tilts his head up and squeezes his eyes shut. “And not in that way! You know what I mean!” He quickly adds before Taehyung’s eccentric mind can run off to god knows where. 
“You’re acting like her rejecting you is the end of the world.” The older male huffs, leaning back on the couch the two of them were huddled on. 
“It is!” Jungkook cries, burying his face in his hands.  
Taehyung shakes his head. “You’re so whipped. Just look at yourself. Training your ass off with Seokjin, wearing clothes you used to hate just because you think she might like guys who dress fancy.” Taehyung stops playing and turns to Jungkook. “Name brands were always my thing.”
“I borrowed that weird patterned shirt one time!” Jungkook exasperates, recalling how hideous he thought it was; yet still forcing himself to throw it on despite it not being his preferred style. “You’re never going to let it go are you?”
“It was Gucci!” Taehyung exasperates, making a clearly offended face.
 …
 “The way you literally choke on your words every time you try to say hi to her, does not match all of this.” Jimin gestures towards Jungkook’s perfectly proportioned body.
“What?” Jungkook crossed his arms defensively, making his practically see through white button up crinkle near the chest area.  
Jimin huffs a shortened laugh. “In case you actually don’t own a mirror-which sometimes I question if you do, you’re fucking hot.” Jimin’s voice echoes throughout the empty dance studio. He’s stopped stretching his legs and has begun examining his own hair in the mirror, running a hand through his soft locks and making sure they look on point like always.
The door to the studio opens and a sleepy Hoseok walks in. “All I heard is ‘you’re fucking hot’, and I don’t want to know the context.” He says as he drops his bag and begins changing into more comfortable shoes.  
“Hobi! You’re late.” Jimin accuses.  
“I worked an overnight shift.” The older male responds, letting out a long exhale before starting his routine warm-up.
“I see you’re back to Timberlands” Hoseok comments as he eyes Jungkook’s boots, clearly remembering Namjoon’s comment on how the boy is recently changing up his sense of fashion.
“I-I never moved on from them,” Jungkook says feeling a bit embarrassed as he looks down at his favorite pair of shoes. He knew he was going to be in the dance studio all day, so there was no need to dress to impress because he wouldn’t be seeing anyone (especially not you) except Hoseok and Jimin.
“He only dresses up when there’s a chance to run into you know who.” Jimin blurts out, causing the youngest male to run up and tackle him.
“Who? Y/N?” Hoseok asks raising a brow, interest sparked for the first time since he got out of bed today.
“Yeah, he thinks it’ll get her to notice him.”
“Hyung!” Jungkook whines.
“Hey, I wasn’t finished yet. I was about to add how unnecessary it is when you look good in everything anyways.“ Jimin flashes him an angelic smile, making Jungkook loosen his hold on him.  
“Oh, so that’s why you’ve been acting so weird lately.” Hoseok comes to realization. “Can’t blame you though, she’s really pretty and like what, 3 years older?”
“Almost 4” Jimin corrects.
Jungkook feels like he wants to crawl into a hole and never come out. Why were his friends like this? God, he shouldn’t have been so obvious about his crush on you, but he was never good at hiding his true feelings, especially not when his hyungs were all so observant. 
 …
  “Namjoon?” Jungkook begins to ask. “You think you could help me, uh, compose a song or something?”
Namjoon glances up from his laptop. “Yeah, sure. But can I ask why you suddenly want to do something I’ve been trying to spark your interest in for ages?”
“Oh no reason, just I, uh, wanted to, I mean…I-I like music?” Jungkook mentally curses for being so non-covert.
Namjoon chuckles lightly. “You want to write a song for Y/N right?” Namjoon grins, hitting the target and getting straight to the point.
“I-I….yeah…I guess that’s what I was considering.” Jungkook admits.
“Of course I’ll help, but you should probably allow her to get to know you before gifting her a random love song.” Namjoon laughs again. “That might just scare her off.”
“Y-yeah, I’m working on that.” Jungkook knows he’s hopeless. He’ll never gather the courage to actually talk to you, not when he’s barely able to look you in the eye when he’s attempting to just say hi. “I’m just bad at expressing my feelings or just talking to girls in general.”
Namjoon smiles warmly, dimples forming on the sides of his cheeks. “Honestly though, the best way is to just be yourself.” He encourages. “I’m sure she’ll find a lot of things about you to be charming.”

  Jungkook’s never been one to strike up random conversations with strangers, but he figures Yoongi was just giving him a chance to practice honing his social skills. That is, until he sees you walking into the coffee shop. He immediately diverts his eyes, training his gaze onto the cars passing by outside and hoping that you’re not actually walking towards their table.
Yoongi didn’t mention who the person joining you guys was, and he prays his horrible instincts are being their normal horrible selves and that you won’t-
“Yoongi!”
This can’t be happening.
“Y/N!” Jungkook can practically see the signature half-smile plastered on Yoongi’s face, but no, he refuses to turn and acknowledge the reality of the situation.
No, this is not happening. Maybe if he closes his eyes-
“You’re Jungkook, right?” He hears the sweet melody of a females voice drift to his ears.
Fuck.
“H-h-hi” Jungkook says, clearing his throat and shifting uncomfortably in his seat.
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
“Glad you could make it, Y/N.” Yoongi says, smiling as if nothing was wrong, and pretending like this was the most natural situation he could’ve thrown the youngster in, and not purposefully set up at all. “I wanted to officially introduce the two of you. I know you’ve already met, but-”
Yoongi’s phone vibrates before he can finish. Jungkook watches intently as the male looks down and checks the message. “Oh, looks like Namjoon janked up the microwave again. I gotta go fix that shit before the guy starves or burns down the apartment trying to cook.” Yoongi puts on a fake sad face.
Yoongi can’t be leaving. Jungkook’s eyes widen in horror.
“You guys don’t mind if I head out right?”
Jungkook opens his mouth to protest but you reply before he has the chance to.
“Oh yeah, you go ahead. We’ll be fine.” You smile at Jungkook who glances at you shyly before fixing his large doe-eyes back on the empty table in front of him.
Yoongi sighs. “The guy has an IQ of a genius, but he’s a total klutz.”
Jungkook hears you laugh, but he’s sweating so much he wonders why the fucking AC in the shop feels like it’s turned off when it’s actually on full blast.  
 …
 “So you’re a college freshman now, right?” You turn to Jungkook after Yoongi leaves, trying to focus on creating a lighter mood. You’ve always known he was the extremely introverted type, someone who takes a while to open up.
“Y-yeah, starting soon, classes starting-” You giggle at the way he squeezes his eyes shut and mutters something under his breathe when his sentence doesn’t come out coherently.
“Hey, well congrats on surviving high school.” You still remember seeing him in the hallways back then, the scrawny kid who would look away every time you waved at him. You had asked Seokjin about it, but the older male just said he was a shy one. Seeing him act the same way now was utterly endearing, and you liked how his sweet personality hasn’t changed despite the noticeable transformation in his physique.
“High school, yeah.” Jungkook mutters. “Y-you’re uh, almost done with college right?” Jungkook winces at the way the pitch of his voice gradually got higher as he finished that last sentence. Because puberty still likes to pay him random visits now and then.  
You giggle again. “Yup, I’m in my last year, but I’ll be attending grad school at the same university.”
Jungkook’s eyebrows lift in surprise. “T-that means you’ll still be here…”
“Mmm-hm” You hum in confirmation. “So if you ever need help with school, hit me up.”
“Y-you’d do that?”
“Of course. We’ve known each other long enough.” You reply nonchalantly.
“Hehe, y-yeah. Known each other…”
“You know, on the outside you look like the type of guy who would just fuck a girl and leave, but on the inside you’re like super nerdy and a complete jokester with your friends. Am I right?” You give him a knowing look.
Jungkook’s jaw drops.
“Sorry, I should’ve been more refined with that statement. I guess what I’m trying to say is, you totally seem like the type who’s super soft but hides under a hardened shell.” You watch as an astonished expression washes over his face. “It’s the vibe you always given off.”
You still remember the days he was always dressed in a hoodie too big for him or that white shirt he must either continuously wash or own several of the same kind. You briefly wonder why he’s recently stopped sporting the style that you’ve grown to associate him with.
“Always?” He wonders how long you’ve been analyzing him to come up with such an accurate portrayal. He’s usually misunderstood.
“Yeah, ever since I first saw you back in high school. And I totally thought you hated me or something.” You chuckle, recalling how he seemed to avoid you at all costs. “You don’t actually… hate me right?” You slowly lift your eyes to meet his, waiting for a response.
“No!” Jungkook answers quicker than his reflexes can even allow. “Y/N, I’ve actually liked you since high school. Like, like-like. And I’m just so nervous around you and super socially awkward in general, and I didn’t want to come off weird and shit. Uh, fuck.” He blurts out, finally revealing his feelings that he’s kept hidden from you for so long. It’s the most embarrassing thing he’s done to date, and he swears he’ll hide away from society for good after this day. “Haha, wow, I can’t believe I just said that.” He bites his bottom lip, feeling his cheeks blossom into the darkest shade of rose that’s physically possible.
You feel your heart skip a beat as his confession, a feeling that gradually spreads as a soothing warmth throughout your chest. “A-actually, I have too.” You admit, voice soft and shy, much like his is 90% of the time.
Jungkook is speechless at that moment, just gaping at you for what feels like an eternity because this obviously can’t be real.
“W-what?” Jungkook feels like he’s in a dream. How was this possible? There’s no way you could’ve just admitted that you’ve had a crush on him too, and since fucking high school. This can’t be real. This can’t.
“Jungkook, I’ve liked you since then too.” You repeat, firmer this time because he looks like he’s in a daze. 
Jungkook has to swallow before replying because he’s still in the most shocked state he ever been in. “R-really?”
You nod, eyes gazing into his with a sincere resolve.
“Shit. I can’t believe. Wow.” Jungkook doesn’t know what to do with himself in that moment, but he’s so fucking relieved he feels like someone just transported him to heaven. This was actually real. “Wait, d-does that mean you’ll, uh… go out-”
“Yes, Jungkook.” You smile tenderly. “The answer is yes.”

Sam bumped the sliding weight up, waiting for the scale to balance evenly.

Donna scowled at the scale. “What do you mean not bad? I’m gaining weight.”
Stepping off it with a huff, blond ponytail swinging, like most people in the first few months she looked personally offended by the scale.
“Exactly. You’re going to gain weight at the start as you pick up muscle, and in the long run, it’ll help you burn more fat. It’s a good thing.”
Donna, perpetually smiling even through red-faced sweaty workouts, looked at Sam with a discouragement that he was used to seeing.
“Come on, this my job, I know what I’m talking about. Don’t let it get you down.”
Pulling her tank top away from her belly to fan herself, Donna rolled her eyes up to the ceiling, sighed, and looked back down to him, fixing a smile on her face.
“Well, at least I’ve got a good looking reason to keep coming back.”
Sam clapped her on the shoulder. “Give yourself more credit. You’re doing this for work. Practical fit is a different kind of fit from show fit. Your endurance is already getting better.”
Donna bit her lip and her eyes darted down then up Sam’s body, red flush creeping back into her face. A lot of the people who took up the new membership special that the gym had - working with a personal trainer once a week for a trial period - seemed to be more interested in watching said personal trainer than in doing the work themselves. Hey, if they were paying clients, Sam was just fine giving them the tools they needed, whether they used them or not.
Donna was determined, and even though she seemed to get down on herself sometimes, she bounced back with the right kind of reasons to get into shape. To be better at her job as a cop, to be healthier. Sam wanted her to succeed.
He was used to his clients flirting with him, with different degrees of brazenness and usually little success. Donna actually managed to get him kind of flustered.
Weights clanging in the far corner of the gym startled both of them out of the weird staring, posture adjusting, hair fixing thing they were doing back and forth at each other.
Sam cleared his throat and returned Donna’s smile. “So, smoothie time and I’ll go over your food journal with you?”
He might spend a little more time than he was supposed to with Donna, but he wanted to encourage her. With only one day a week to work directly with her, he was basically supposed to monitor her progress, adjust her workout as needed, and keep her on track. But Sam knew that food was her weakness, and holding her accountable to a food journal was helping. Probably.
“You know it’s my favorite part of the week,” Donna gave him a nervous laugh.
He walked up to the front of the gym past reception where a glass-walled, sleek smoothie bar whirred with activity. Donna pulled out the small notebook she kept in her pocket, taking out her cell phone to text someone as they waited in line.
“I hope you don’t mind,” she told Sam, pocketing her phone and passing over the journal, “My girlfriend’s coming to pick me up today since my car broke down, so, we’ll have company.”
“Your… girlfriend?”
“Oh ya, Jodes, she’s real great. You’ll like her.”
Distracted by putting in her order, Donna moved along with the line.
Sam, suddenly embarrassed and kind of disappointed, busied himself with reviewing the journal. He was so used to people flirting with him at the gym. Of course Donna wasn’t actually interested, she was just a naturally friendly, gregarious person. She was optimistic and chatty and playful, but it was nothing personal. With Sam. In that kind of way.
“Hey, Donna! Over here!”
A tall woman with short cut brown hair waved at them from a table, standing up to shake Sam’s hand when he came over. She was wearing a uniform. So, both cops. Nope, he was not going to think about it. No. Stay professional.
“Hey, I’m Jody.”
“Hi. I’m Sam.”
“Oh. I know.”
Donna giggled and sat down with her green smoothie, wrinkling her nose at the first sip. “Stop it Jodio, don’t scare him away.”
Sam looked between them, coughed into his hand as he sat down, food journal open in front of him. “This week looks pretty good Donna. Still a lot of snacking going on, but you’re moving towards healthier options, which is a good step.”
“Jodes been doing the shopping for me.”
“It’s a group effort. Besides, I could stand to lose a few pounds.” Jody smiled, accepting the smoothie Donna slid across the table for her to try. “Ungh, what is this.”
“It’s like a salad in a cup,” Sam told her. “With a bone broth powder for protein.”
“That is pretty awful.” Jody grimaced after a sip and slid it back across the table.
Donna nodded in agreement, wrinkling her nose again and taking a deep breath before finishing it off.
Making a few notes in the margins of Donna’s journal, substitution suggestions and gentle reminders to watch portion sizes, Sam closed it and handed it back.
“Remember that your clothes will fit differently as you put on muscle, getting tighter in some places and looser in others. It’s an adjustment period. But muscle is good, ok.”
“You betcha. I’ll stick to it, Sam.”
The silence that followed was awkward. Sam wasn’t used to any silence around Donna. Both women looked at each other, then looked at him, like they were trying to communicate something between them. Sam got the distinct impression that he shouldn’t interrupt. Instead, he took out his ponytail to pull his hair back again, tucking up loose strands. They both watched him. He could feel heat rise to his cheeks.
“So.” Donna started. Then stopped.
Jody, raising an eyebrow at Donna, said, “So.”
Sam looked between them. “So?”
Donna fidgeted in her chair. “So, Sam. There’s a great bike trail that runs through down-town near the farmer’s market. I was wondering if you might want to go? One of these Saturdays?”
“Um -” Sam started.
“Like a date.” Jody clarified.
“Aren’t… Donna said you were girlfriends?”
“Not man enough to handle two women?” Jody asked, challenging but also clearly amused.
“Jodes,” Donna hissed from her side of the table.
“No, yeah, that could be great.” Sam nodded. “Hey, don’t they have concerts at the Lock, after the farmer’s market, during summer?”
“Yeah, usually cover bands, but you know, it’s free.” Jody shrugged.
“Ooh, that would be fun!” Donna tapped her hands on the table, mostly-empty smoothie forgotten.
It had been months since Sam’s last date, and years since he’d been in an open relationship. But it could be worth a try.
Snagging Donna’s food journal still on the table, Sam opened it and wrote his number on the inside of the front cover. “Sure. Definitely. Give me a call.”

Tuesday 7th November 2023
Hey journal, so today I started my day of by relaxing then after a little while I got up and downloaded tiktok live studio on my pc as I wanted to start recording me playing games on my Pc, so I did a very short stream practicing and seeing whether I did a right. It took a bit of tweaking on volume so my stream could here me but all together it was not to bad. Also this morning faith donated £25 to my movember mental health cause, where I’m trying to raise money for men’s mental health. Anyways after going my live I also got ready for the day and had a little dance. This morning I felt very energetic so I was a bit crazy this morning. I also this morning did some posing for my gym account. Then after this I made myself some porridge and did my protein powder. Then I also quickly called faith as she made her way to work. Then soon my mum got back and I helped her put her shopping where it needs to go. Then after this my mum dropped me of to the gym. I had a very good gym session and I mainly focused on triceps and my back for the main part of the session. Then after my gym session I walked home. On the way home I went to Tescos as I wanted to get a Ben and jerrys cookie dough ice how ever they ran out so I ended up leaving the shop with prime and some chewing gum. Then after this I decided to continue to walk home. Also near my house there is a petrol station and I went in there because they also sell food. Anyways I found the ice cream in there. I was expecting it to be a little more expensive so like £5 however I got to the checkout and the women told me £7.10 so it was ridiculously pricey. Anyways I ended just paying the price. Once I got home I ate some food. Then I went on my pc, then after a while I had a shower then went live again on tiktok and streamed me playing fortnite for a couple hours. Then after this I had dinner quickly then quickly went back to streaming. On the first stream I was playing with someone from work and my friend Daniel. Then the second stream I played with them two and also played with my cousin Louis which was nice as we haven’t spoke in ages. We only had time for one game though and we luckily won which was good. Anyways I am now about to watch a football game with my dad. Im actually going to the game which is good. I will tell you about it later. Bye journal!
Hey journal I am now writing this the following day but we ended up winning 2-0 the game was good, however the other team were really not a competition, they had hardly any chances and couldn’t really do anything apart from hold back. On the other hand originally we were struggling to break them down this is because the midfield were not dropping in to space to help push the play forward meaning. The defenders were just having to try lob the ball over to the strikers, meaning there was less control than what we could of had in possession. It was like the midfield were hiding and didn’t want the ball. Also the referee did makes some horrible decision, some of them were very questionable. Anyways one of the goals was a penalty and another one was a volley. Anyways speak to you later journal. Bye!

Real lessons of motherhood
I say things I never thought I would
“Take the plastic bag off of your head,” I said to my seven-year-old son.
 “Why?”
 “Because you can suffocate and die. How many times have I told you not to put plastic bags over your head?”
 “A lot.”
 Are my kids the reason for these ridiculous warning labels? Heavy sigh.

Grocery success depends on your entourage
When my children were small enough to be contained in the cart for our entire shopping trip I could read labels, compare pricing, succumb to my own impulse buys. But then as they grew they no longer stayed in the cart and grocery shopping turned into a sick game of “don’t touch that,” “please stop running and sliding on your knees down the aisles,” “watch behind you,” and “no, we are not getting chocolate peanut butter dip.”
Now, when I walk into the grocery store, I secretly think may the odds be forever in your favor to my fellow shoppers.
Self-checkout is the worst
If you have children old enough to be outside the cart, self-checkout becomes more of an intense game of simultaneously scanning groceries while keeping them away from the scale with a live audience of all the shoppers impatiently waiting behind you. Why yes, yes I am self-checking an entire cart of groceries because for whatever reason my grocery store has no cashier lanes open.
To add insult to injury, who is the sadistic jerk that thought advertising candy at children’s eye level in the self-checkout lane was smart? Newsflash, it’s not smart, it’s evil. Instead of succumbing to your marketing tactics I am leaving with a crying child and right temple that may very well explode at any moment.
Pick-up or delivered groceries are from heaven
Amazon pantry started it all for me with delivering shelf-stable pantry staples to my door, but then Kroger one-upped Amazon when they offered their click-list service. Now I can order everything I need online and pull up to the store where some wonderful human loads my car up for me. I don’t even need to get out to help or to pay. They bring the iPad to me to swipe and sign. Then I just drive away, can you believe it? It’s like something out of a fairytale. No more self-checkout, no more candy aisle, my kids stay strapped into their seatbelts and we accomplish what we set out to do easy breezy lemon squeezy.
Blissfully enjoy the baby bubble
When I brought Dominic, my first child, home from the hospital I collapsed into tears because I was terrified. The weight of the world, his world, was now on my shoulders and would remain there until he grew into an adult. The magnitude and depth of this responsibility were incredible and I did not think I was capable.
Coupled with the fear was also amazement. Each time I looked at his tiny bird-like legs, his soft blue eyes, his bald wrinkly head I felt pure awe. The movement of his breath was rhythmic, chest up, chest down. Here sat a being, a human that had grown within me, with a beating heart and blinking eyes. It was a miracle, he was (and still is) my miracle. How is this even possible? I would ask myself over and over.
Nothing mattered outside of Dominic. My world revolved around meeting his needs. Rocking him as the soft hairs from his head tickled my neck, breathing in his scent, filled with more love than I ever knew possible. This is the bubble, treasure these moments. You may have other children, but the baby bubble will never be the same.
Parties in the early afternoon suck
I am the oldest grandchild in my family and naturally, I was the first to purchase a house, get married, and to have a baby. My family came to all of these celebrations. As my cousins got older I was also invited to all of their celebrations and I wanted nothing more than to go. Every invitation I received was for one or two-o-clock in the afternoon.
This is right in the middle of nap time.
Naively I went to the first few parties, skipping my son’s nap. It was utter hell. He was whiny, mean, and wild throughout the entire party, but it did not stop there. His crap behavior carried over into the evening right up until bedtime.
That’s when I decided the price was too high. It was just not worth the horror of missing the nap. I was embarrassed and stressed, my hosts probably wondered what kind of demon I was raising and both of us wished I just would have stayed home. So know that I love you, am proud of you, and are with you in spirit.
If you hurt my child I will hunt you down
No one will ever love my child like I do. My love is deep, fierce, and unyielding. There is something incredibly special about a mother’s love for her child. This is impossible to understand until you become a mother.
This is not to dismiss the love of a father or future spouse. Those relationships are just as important however they are different.
William Congreve said, “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.” I say… nothing. Instead, I quietly stalk my prey like a mother tigress and pounce when the time is right because if you hurt my child you deserve no warning.
Facebook is full of lies
Helpful hint, no one has it all together, everyone has different struggles, some are just better at hiding it than others. We all see her, the beautiful mom who seems to have it all figured out. She posts pictures of outings with smiling, well dressed, clean children. We are happy for her, but begin to wonder if we are as good a mother.
STOP RIGHT THERE!
That photo took one second. ONE. SECOND!
Think back on today. Can you remember one second that was picture perfect? I know you can. The problem is not your mothering. The problem is the question, Am I as good as X?
Parenting is messy, full of self-doubt and we are all learning as we go. Some days I have it all together, but most days I don’t.

Parent YOUR way, teach lessons to YOUR children that are important to YOU. We are all different, including each one of our children and our differences should be celebrated. It’s YOU your kids love, not that other mom. So go mom like only you can!
Pinterest is full of fairytales
Have you ever tried to recreate something you found on Pinterest? Yeah, did it turn out like the picture? No? Same for me, every time I try.
Comparing your first attempt to someone’s best is like comparing your karate moves to a black belt’s. Yours will probably not be as good, but with practice and patience, I’m willing to bet it could get better.
The moral of the story here is keep it all in perspective and maybe try that new Pinterest thing a few times before debuting it at your next holiday celebration.
Prevention is the key to toddlerhood survival
Put everything out of reach and be aware that everything is climbable. The world is basically a giant jungle gym playground and all things, literally, every single thing goes into their mouths.
Some of my mom friends were determined to teach their toddlers self-control.
Well, if my friends are doing it, maybe I should give it a go.
Every few minutes my toddler would grab something that posed a possible threat and shove it right into his mouth. Up, down, up down, like a little game every time I sat down he would get into something that I would need to take away.
I was way too tired for that.
Instead, I de-cluttered my house and got rid of anything that was not toddler-friendly. Basically, my house was decorated with baby gates, Disney themed plastic toys, and pictures of my kiddos hanging on the walls. All cleaners, self-care items, toxic or messy products were put on the top shelf of closets.

Danger lurks everywhere
Before I had kids I thought I protected myself from danger pretty well, but now I see the possibility of death in just about every activity.
 “Mom, can I help dad mow the lawn?” Sure, go ahead and flip the mower on yourself and lose a limb.
“Mom, can we go to the zoo today?” Will today be the day one of the tigers gets loose or my kid wanders into a bear enclosure?
People learn through experience, yes I know that. I also appreciate the significance of learning from cause and effect. As long as there is no emergent danger (life or limb) I release the boys from my cocoon of safety so that they may gain the necessary experience.
I am also the mom frantically waving my children and husband closer when they have floated too far from the beach thinking of sharks, jellyfish, muscle cramps, undertow, etc. It’s all about balance, right? I balance irrational fear with measured risk taking like any good mom.
You are all your kids need
Overthinking is one of my best and worst character traits. I love to think about everything not in any kind of skilled way but just meander through my own messy mind. It’s interesting what floats around in there, the imagined possible outcomes to different scenarios (see above, danger lurks everywhere), the fascination of the simplest joys (enjoy the baby bubble), the ease at which self-doubt creeps in (facebook is full of lies). Do you know what I have learned from all that analyzing?
All my boys really want and need is my undivided attention. Still, at seven and ten-years-old they want to be near me, to hug me, to wrap up in a blanket with me in the evenings while we watch Animal Planet or Nat Geo.
Toys, trips, trinkets are all just fluff. It’s me they want. And that works out pretty great because they are all I have ever wanted. So let’s go mom the only way we know how, in our own special, unique way.
