actually to bring up how watered down and sanitized the first 3 episodes of percy jackson has been, it raises concerns for later books. the stakes are supposed to be high from book 1 and the bar continues to be raised. it’s an action packed series with monsters and gods and deadly quests. there’s the possibility of being killed. which raises the question, when titan’s curse rolls around, how will they handle not one but two character deaths? this is the book that’s the turning point in the series, where everyone senses this tonal shift and that they’re favorite characters could actually die. that kronos is serious and this impending war will be real, with real casualties, injuries, and intense battle scenes. how do you sanitize a literal war?

SUBLIME CINEMA #661 - THE FRENCH CONNECTION
RIP William Friedkin. This is one of the most important films of the 70's and New Hollywood cinema, when American directors started taking fearless approaches to capturing the grit, bleakness and paranoia of the era, often in a style of unvarnished realism. I missed this entry because Friedkin had done so many great films, even later in his career, that this one is almost obvious.

Zhu YiLong in two years: *makes over a billion at the box office with Mo San Mei. Wins a Golden Rooster Award. Makes 3+ billion at the box office the following year with He Fei. Debuts his artsy crime noir Film as Ma Zhe at Cannes Film Festival that is nominated for Un Certain Regard Award, then it plays at different festivals around the world - proceeds to make 300 million at the domestic box office alone. Had three films air in total in 2023 & super well.*

Honestly I’m choosing to be an optimist and believe that Elden Henson at the least could still be in DD Born Again (haven’t heard anything about Deb so not sure there). As best I can tell, all the current rumors that he and Deb aren’t there trace back to a single article stating Elden and Deborah aren’t on the current call sheet. And having known folks who worked in TV, this doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t on the cast list. It just means that what DD is filming right now doesn’t require them - think action scenes, solo scenes. It could mean that, say, Jon’s on a time crunch and so they’re just going to shoot everything with him and Charlie first so he can leave and then they’ll hit everything else. It could mean, ‘yeah ok we buffed all our dudes up so we’re just gonna get the hardcore fights and the shirtless scenes done ASAP’. Kevin has been open about how much he loved Netflix DD, and the fact that he’s already pulled in Charlie, Vincent, and Jon, along with - seemingly - Krysten if the hints on twitter are right, makes me hopeful that this is just a, ‘They’re being secretive and are filming things in a certain order’.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed, anyway.

Just came back from BBC and holy shit it was so cool. Both the radio and TV news presenters get given a bulletin of news and actually write the news script themselves and edit it to fit their speech. The TV presenter also has this pedal so she can control the prompt monitor hersel; I really thought the prompt screen was automatic. I also got to see the archives (which I was really excited about) and the food was really good! They had sanpellogrino which was very fancy and ofc, I drank like 4 cans of it lol. There was also this guy whom works for Scott Mills as a producer which was an honour and also met this tv director who had this like a VERY posh voice, a complete polar opposite to the radio people whom were very casual, very un-posh lmao. I even got a bunch of radio/tv tips from the presenters personally which was very helpful :)
A very important question I asked was what happened to Gus Honeybun (he's basically this funky bunny puppet whom reads out people's birthdays, it was from basically all Gen X/boomers' childhoods from the west country), unfortunately, the poor lad was sacked but they keep him in a local archive centre. It was a question my foster mother had requested and of course I couldn't waste an opportunity like this.
They all also really liked the fact that I'm into history and latin so they gave me connections to these archive centres and they're going to see if I can go into Exeter Cathedral's library to see the Exeter Book in person which I'm really joyed about because I fucking love the Exeter Book (and really old books in general but OH MY GODDDDD..... Maybe if I could also see the other medieval books and manuscripts... Perhaps in medicine for my history gcses mweheheh)

A character reacting with shock and horror to discovering the trauma someone they care about experienced is dramatic. However - I'd like to briefly enthuse about scenarios where they react calmly instead. You could certainly take it in a negative direction, where calmness indicates lack of care, but I prefer a positive one.
Maybe the character who's been hurt is afraid people will treat them differently because of their trauma, and so hasn't mentioned or shown scars associated with it. They can live with the memories of what happened, but not with others whispering about them sympathetically, or treating them like they're broken, or hiding things from them out of fear of triggering them.
Or maybe they're not coping well, but don't want to ask for help because they think their trauma means they're weak or 'damaged,' or they think they deserved it. Someone reacting dramatically might make them feel worse - more alone, and unusual in a negative way.
And of course - the same reasons that a calm reaction would go over well can be used to create some great angst in response to a reaction that isn't calm. :)
