greta gerwig really said. when this girl gets a little sad and confused by the weird and complicated and uncomfortable parts of being human and growing up, she meets god and sits at her kitchen table, drinks her tea, holds her hands. and she asks god if she’s allowed to be happy. and god tells her she doesn’t need her permission. she tells her she’s going to be okay.

Hey there can you please do a Tommy Shelby daughter x Isaiah . Y/n is the daughter of him and Greta and he’s super protective of her she’s is like his rock especially when he got back from the war. maybe a few times they almost get caught and when they do he find them in a compromising position but ya know y/n is Tommys daughter so she acts all nonchalant about it while Tommy is fuming and she tries to talk him down. Hope it makes sense ❤️
Hey love,
This ended up with a lot of Reader & Lizzie development and I feel that I may have made this too fluffy. Hope you enjoy it and I apologize for how long this took me.
Warnings: Parenting, mentions of death, teen anxiety, family themes

“Thomas it’s obvious! Please don't be stupid about this. Talk to her.” Polly’s voice wore down what little patience he had left. Yes, it was obvious his daughter was seeing someone in his team, and that someone happened to be Isaiah.
Something that seemed to be lost on everyone was how this type of thing should be handled. Isaiah, like everyone, had a job to do. As his boss it was Tommy’s job to keep him in line. Going out to do God knows what to his daughter was a huge betrayal. He liked Isaiah, but it was up to them to make the right decision to come forward about it and ask for his blessing.
In which he would consider things carefully with his daughter. If he got involved before that, he would have to punish Isaiah for sneaking around. Which, would probably hurt his daughter and cause a great big fiasco.
Another massive headache to distract everyone from what was important.
“Do you ever listen?” Polly shouted slamming the door to his office behind her. He sat there for a long while staring at the wall thinking about his daughter. She was so much like her mother it caused him chest pain from time to time. She hadn't known her mother, or that side of the family, meaning she herself would never understand or see the similarities.
She had just had her 17th birthday. Tommy could see how his role in her life had rapidly changed the older she got. She was incharge, headstrong, and temperamental. He would be forever grateful that Greta’s qualities were there to balance what she had received from him.
He sighed pouring a glass of whiskey. As much as he wanted to punish Isaiah, he knew this was more her idea than his.
______________________________________________________________________
You laid in bed haunted by your first relationship. So much pressure was on you. Your heart wanted him, but if you made a foolish choice your father’s disappointment would be enough to wipe you off the planet. You thought back to the morning when you had been kissing in the cellar. Arthur almost caught the two of you. Guilt twisted up in your stomach, and you wondered if it was worth all this pain. Thinking about ending it was somehow even more painful.
You thought about your dad, what he was like once he came home to you after the war. He was so bitterly cold with everyone, except you. Then you remembered Grace with as much fondness as a block of moldy cheese. A complete waste of a person, well, you got your baby brother from it so you supposed she was alright in the end.
Then there was Lizzie. You wanted to talk to her so badly, but she would tell your dad. Or worse, look down on you. She was too tall, and slim, and pretty to understand the situation you were in.
Laying there in bed as the night grew later you left it up to fate. If she was awake when you went down stairs you would tell her. If she was asleep then you would keep it a secret.
You pulled a thick sweater over your pajama top before padding down the stairs. You knocked on your father’s study and opened the door. Lizzie was laying on the couch reading a book.
She looked like everything you wish you were. Lizzie wouldn't ask for permission, she lived her life however she wanted. Her eyes looked up from over the top of her book and she looked surprised to see you there.
“Hello.” She sat up and motioned to the other side of the couch. Normally you avoided her, partially out of respect, but also because her aura of perfection annoyed you.
“Erm - Is this a bad time?” You said in a shy voice.
“No, not at all.” She said calmly. You sat down on the couch, she wore a silk house coat that hung on her slender frame elegantly. You looked down at the men’s Pajama bottoms and wool sweater you were wearing and gave a defeated sigh. This was very stupid.
“What’s going on? Everything okay?” Her voice held a tone of genuine concern. You remembered that you had left it up to fate. You took a deep breath then began.
“Well, I really like Isaiah, he’s kind and funny, and I feel really calm when I’m with him, sometimes he will read to me and I'll just fall asleep, which is embarrassing and everyone says you should feel nervous and like there are flies in your stomach, which is very gross, but I don't know what i’m doing and my mum is dead.”
The words came out of your mouth like a hurricane. You took a couple deep breaths then more came to the surface.
“He wants to tell my dad, because he doesn't want to die, which is reasonable, but I don't know how sure I am about this and it’s my life I want to enjoy it, go at my own pace, I don't want to make a bad choice and have dad be disappointed, but also fuck him, I can’t just not live my life. I know you’ve never had to deal with this type of stuff being a woman of “higher education” BUT like I said my mum is dead and Esme is still in the woods, Pol will tell my dad.”
Her eyes were wide as she looked down at you.
“What’s a woman of higher education?” She asked with a lifted brow. You let out a sigh, frustrated that she was focused on the wrong thing.
“You know, you went off to school, got a good job, worked for my dad then fell in love with him. Not a lot of conflict. You guys got married and had Ruby.”
Lizzie let out a laugh that made you want to slap her and cry at the same time. People were so frustrating.
“Darling, oh, is that what you think of me?” There was a fondness in her voice and a softness in her wet eyes that confused you. “That’s - I’ll tell you my story another time, I promise you it was not glamorous in the slightest.”
She lit a cigarette and you wanted to know what she meant.
“This is about you.” She nodded, breathing out a cloud of smoke. “So he makes you feel safe. He knows what your family does for a living. Sounds like a good move.” She responded easily.
“What about dad?”
“Just tell him.”
Your stomach dropped and you still felt like she didn't understand the situation. If your dad and the family knew it would be this huge thing that would swallow you up. It wouldnt be yours anymore.
“Look your father isn't going to make you marry the guy.” She laughed at the idea. “Even if he was that way I wouldn't let him. You need to do your own thing. I would, however, feel better if you had us behind you. I know what it's like to be out there alone.” Her eyes fell onto the fire and her posture went slightly rigid.
“Thanks, Lizzie.” You whispered after a long moment. She gave a small smile then walked with you up to your room. You got into bed wondering what her life was like before drifting off.
___________________________________________________________
The morning came and you found yourself in a losing battle with guilt as Isaiah pulled you into a broom cupboard.
“Have you had some time to think about things?”
“Oh um -” You thought about what Lizzie said and took a breath.
“Look, I’m not trying to pressure you. I just really hate lying to your da.” He gave you a long look and warmth spread across your cheeks. “Whatever you want - Is fine with me.” He said finally.
“I think it’s best we talk to him.” You said letting out a happy giggle as he picked you up. He kissed you hard and your heart rate sped up. You kissed him back and before you knew it you were pressed up against the back wall with your legs around his waist.
It was wrong. But for some reason that made it harder to stop. He made noises that were going to keep you up for days.
______________________________________________________________
Tommy’s POV
Lizzie had spoken to you, about what, she wouldn't say, but it confirmed to him that things were getting out of hand. A small part of him was pleased that you were starting to see Lizzie as a part of the family, the other part of him didn't like the idea of you keeping secrets with anyone but him.
In the corner of his eye he caught the door to the broom cupboard swing shut and he fought with himself for a moment. Might as well put her out of her misery and just get it over with. No one was here to witness it meaning that no one would know this is how it went down. He wouldn't punish Isaiah, just have a chat with him after about what punishment will look like if he messed up again. It would be enough to set him straight.
He opened the door with the intention of sorting this out. Seeing his daughter in a position like that was something he was not prepared for. He set you down immediately, removing his hands.
He was too angry to speak. He had half a mind to kill the stupid kid. He watched your face turn from shock to rage. This was not going to be a easy morning.
“Isaiah, get out.” You snapped, he looked at you for a moment but left when he realised it was in his best interest to listen.
“We were going to tell you today at lunch. We are dating. Nothing bad happened here, so I don't need to be scolded.” You crossed your arms.
“Go home and wait for me there.” Was all he could manage to say. Having a screaming match when they opened in ten minutes was not wise. His tone of voice made your skin pale slightly meaning you would listen. You stomped out of the shop. He waited for Polly to show up and explained before heading home.
He made a stop along the way and tried his best to orginize his thoughts.
________________________________________________________
You walked around the kitchen island in circles.
Lizzie sat there drinking her coffee.
“I really fucked everything up. He’s so mad Lizzie.”
“He’s your father, it's his job to be angry.” She said easily. “He loves you, a lot. He’s got this whole complex about your mum too.” She took a drag of her cigarette. You stopped and turned to look at her from across the kitchen.
“What does that mean?”
“It means, he will never forgive himself for your mum, in his head the whole thing was his fault. Him not being there when you were born - the whole thing. Last thing he ever wrote to your mum was about how he would keep the two of you safe. He takes it very seriously. He wants to protect you, but this is new ground for him and he’s not sure how to do it. He can be a real idiot about things, but that’s why he’s got me to help him sort it out. He’s not going to hurt you or Isaiah.”
“What she said.” You dad’s voice made you jump. He came over and placed a kiss on the top of Lizzie’s head. That stupid part of you that wanted to prove him wrong kicked up.
“I’m not going to let you control everything.” You said, something about arguing felt good. You like Isaiah, you wanted to fight for him.
“I don’t want you to live that way.” He said after a long moment. “But you're my kid, in my house, there are rules.” You thought about arguing but waited to see what he would say.
“First off, curfew is 8pm.”
“11.” Lizzie said interrupting him.
“10pm. No boys in your room - ever. Kissing is fine - nothing without clothes. Ever.”
“Once you're married.” Lizzie said with a smile in her voice.
“Never get married.” He said getting annoyed at being interrupted.
“Ouch.” She said in a mock hurt voice.
“There’s - Parenting. It’s hard. If you can wait till your ready - it’s -”
“Dad ew-” You held your hands out as if it could stop the conversation.
“No, no one had this talk with Ada and - “ He seemed lost for words.
“Her husband died.” You said confused.
“Exactly. Teen pregnancy is a real killer okay? So just dont make a baby - ever.”
“Once you're married.” Lizzie said with a smile.
“Which is never.” He said firmly.
“Now the real thing you need to hear from us. If you come and tell us something awful has happened to you, we will believe you and unleash a world of hurt on that boy.” She said with a serious tone pointing at you. “If you get pregnant, you’ll get a wedding and a place to live. But I think we both know you want time to get there, eh?” You nodded at her. “Exactly, so don't do anything we would have done, and take your time. Find the right boy when your ready."
You finally broke her stare to look to your dad standing next to her. He was gripping the chair tight enough to turn his knuckles white. His gaze was focused out the window on the wet grass in the backyard.
“I want you to be happy- In your life.” The words were not difficult, but the meaning behind them was enormous. You thought about everything your dad, and family did for you. You felt your face get hot at the words you knew you should say.
“I am informed, and I will not make a baby, because, I do not - at this time- want to be married or to live in a house on my own, with an infant. Ruby is annoying enough as it is.” You added the last bit in to lighten the mood.
“Don’t talk about your sister like that.” Tommy said in a worn voice.
“I know - I love her for it.” You said and went over to hug your dad. He put his arm around you tightly and kissed the top of your head.
“Lizzie.” You let go of him and watched the look of confusion on her face as you reached down to her. She hugged you back awkwardly due to her seated position. When you pulled away your dad handed you a small box of pastries from your favorite shop, but it didn't distract you from Lizzie brushing the tears from her cheeks.
“Well, those look good,” She said in a high voice and you pushed the box to her.
___________
You and Isaiah, did not make a baby or get married. However, when you look back on that time in your life you remember your parents looking at you in a different way for the first time. Like an adult, in charge of her life. You remember getting close with Lizzie fussing over outfits and various arguments, and feeling secretly touched by how much she and Tommy cared about the situation.

Dear Charles Elias,
I prayed for your safe passage through this bitter winter every day, and it warms my heart that my prayers were answered.
I am so relieved to hear you found Theodore alive and well, and that you are settling in well to your new life!
I hope you manage to continue settling in well and that you may be able to make some friends in your new home.
Tumblr media
You asked how we all have been here.
After the initial shock of your departure settled life has continued mostly unchanged.
Your siblings miss you dearly, and Joseph is as he always has been.
Tumblr media
We celebrated Eugene Anifas' birthday recently.
To think he is now no longer a boy, but a young man!
As is tradition we held a large celebration with the entire family invited.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The party was attended by several relatives. My uncles Joseph and Vilhelm attended, as did several of your cousins.
Constantine was, of course, there. And even Rosalie managed to travel over with her two daughters for the occassion. It continues to astonish me the rate at which your many cousins grow. Beau is already a young man himself, and Rosalie's youngest - Greta - is now walking around all on her own!
Tumblr media
Although, I will say that your absence from the celebrations was sorely felt by me and your siblings.
Tumblr media
As for the man of the hour - Eugene Anifas looks more mature and respectable than ever.
He is as kind and gentle as he has always been, and his foray into adulthood has done little to lessen this. I do so desperately wish we could have seen his twin grow up with him, to know what he may have been, but I must not dwell on such matters.
Tumblr media
As the party came to an end a young sheperdess stopped by to give Eugene Anifas a gift in person.
I am, of course, not a gossip, but I do believe I saw the faint stirrings of romance between the two.
Lord knows it is about time at least one of you find someone you fancy! Iliana Dorothea seems to have already dismissed half the village, and every letter Émile Gustaf sends revolves around his work and his studies.
Hopefully you may meet someone who catches your eye soon, so that I may feel some hope that I see one of you marry before I am old and grey.
Do keep writing to your dear old mother so that I may know you are well, and give my regards to Theodore.
With love,
Théodora Park 1783
P.S. I have included your new address in my latest letter to Émile Gustaf in the hopes that he may write to you soon.

Give me the greta content please im starving
THANK YOU okay she’s my silly rabbit and i warned you this would be self indulgent. sort of an expansion of this.
it’s very important to me that she cries easily.
also v important that she’s prone to mood swings & yj just roll w/ it cause they’re used to it and love her.
her anita (because i’m a kidparents hater. they were only babies for a year or so then aged up rapidly to adulthood again. amen) and cissie go to the same university and cissie gets an apartment near campus. anita moves in because convenience. they knows damn well greta, their dear, very emotional girlfriend, won’t last long at a dorm with a regular roommate so cissie asks greta to live with them but greta insists she wants to be Independent and live at a dorm.
she lasts half a semester and anitacissie very kindly don’t say anything and move her into the apartment. yj had a betting pool on how long she’d last—they all knew it wouldn’t be a full semester.
she’s a lesbian but also on the aroace spectrum so double comphet was involved in her “crush” on tim. she knows she loves all of yj very strongly but knows what she feels for cissie anita and cassie is distinctly different. not more, not less, just different.
oh yeah i did say she’s anitacissie’s girlfriend. cissiegretacassieanita is real. to me.
i do think the thing about her is she’s got a few core beliefs and convictions (knows her friends are good, knows she wants to be human, knows she loves her friends) but the rest is all ?????. she’s drifting. or would be if yj didn’t take care to steer her in a direction she’s agreeable with.
like. i think her life is so greatly influenced by them. she is deeply and thoroughly codependent, they all are, and it’s unhealthy but it’s keeping her from shattering so who gives a fuck if it’s unhealthy. she studies photography because she knows tim likes it and she wants to bond with him over it. explodes.
tim pays greta's tuition in full, because he’s got the money easily and literally why wouldn’t he she’s his friend. she sobs all over and clings to him for a good five hours afterwards in gratitude.
winter time, she’s always bundled up in many layers, and always holding something warm because she hates the cold. heating on full blast, because cissie’s got celebrity money, she can afford it.
she can hold a grudge like a motherfucker. forgive and forget? unheard of. they may fade & she doesn’t hold any serious grudges against her friends, but trust the grudges are still there.
she’s a girl but in a distinctly non-human way. girl if there was something deeply Off about it. a girl in the same way destructive forces are given female names.
she’s a lot, and she’s too much, and she’s a burden. she’s a burden yj gladly bear because they love her.
just greta 👍 love her so much

✵ The Horsewoman: 1913. Clara and Finn are ready to start school, but Clara is a bit hesitant. Thankfully, her older brother Tommy knows how to negotiate.
✵ The Devil’s Footsteps: 1913. Tommy’s taken on quite a bit of responsibility in caring for his younger siblings. He never expected that responsibility would require him explaining the inappropriateness of tossing erasers at people.

✵ The Road that Leads to Trouble: 1914. The Shelby dinner table is rarely a thing one would call quiet or calm, and it’s no different on the night the family learns their youngest has been kissing boys out on the lane.

✵ Things They Left Behind - Parts 1-3: 1918. John, Arthur, and Tommy have just returned from France to rediscover the things they’ve left behind: Ada, a set of twins, the business, and a few treasures their youngest sister has been keeping safe for them. *COMPLETED*

✵ Little Lady Blinder Series: 1919. Clara Shelby is a kind girl, a smart girl, a well-behaved little sister in a town full of gangsters and ruffians. With the girl’s raising thus far being such a simple task, the Shelby family is left unprepared for all that accompanies a perfectly respectable little girl growing up and becoming a lady among Peaky Blinders.
✵ The Shelby Women’s Alliance: 1920. Clara navigates the first milestone of puberty on her own in a house full of clueless brothers, keeping it all to herself until Ada comes at the weekend and takes over, managing their brother and formally inducting her sister into the Shelby Woman’s Alliance.
✵ Warmth: 1920. It takes a special sort of person to fall asleep during a birthday party at the pub. Turns out it takes a special kind of person to wake them too.
✵ A Small Comfort: 1921. When Clara’s horse gets sick, Tommy tries to shield her from seeing the worst of it, but Clara has her own plans.

✵ Kind Eyes: 1922. Clara finds herself in Tommy’s office, studying a picture on his desk, searching for a resemblance to a mother who looks nothing like her.
✵ Something: 1922. Tommy has sensed a change in the way his youngest sister relates to the boys of Small Heath.
✵ Give Away: 1922. It’s a family day—Arthur and Linda’s wedding day—but rather than celebrating, Arthur’s got Tommy thinking about something he’d never consciously given much thought to—their Clara’s wedding and who would be giving her away.
✵ A Candle in the Darkness: 1923. Clara may be growing older, but she still needs her brother Tommy from time to time.
✵ The Council: 1923. The boy’s reaction to fifteen-year-old Clara Shelby being friends with the Watery Lane boys.
✵ Close-knit: 1923. It’s Christmas 1923, otherwise known as the year of Clara’s Christmas sweaters.
✵ You’re Not Me: 1924. When Clara’s running herself ragged preparing for an exam, Tommy steps in to reassure her.
✵ You’ve always been naive: 1925. After an epic row, Tommy allows Clara to stay more regularly on Watery Lane with a few conditions, one of which is a mid-week meeting at the Midland Hotel to check in.
✵ My Person: 1925. Clara and Isiah haven’t talked in weeks but after a drunken night filled with a break up and scrapping in Small Heath, Isiah insists on going out to Arrow House to see her.
✵ Bloody Rotten: 1925ish. Clara’s feeling bloody rotten, but thankfully her brother arrives home just in time to look after her.
✵ A Big, Beautiful Fellow: 1926. Tommy didn’t set out to bribe his sister and win back her good graces, but when the opportunity presents itself…
✵ They Waited for You: 1927. Tommy’s been away in London and Clara tries to bring him home to Arrow House, to be present for his son and daughter, and for her.
✵ Stars in the Sky: 1927. Clara Shelby is feeling overwhelmed with trying to balance university, family, and business responsibilities, but that doesn’t stop her from noticing something is off with her brother. When have her own problems ever stopped her from trying to fix someone else’s?
✵ Gestures of Fairness: 1927. Thomas Shelby isn’t ticklish, at least that’s what a few decades of Clara’s intel says. Charles and Clara test the theory of his god-like ability to remain stoic in the face of writhing fingers.
✵ Five of Swords: 1929. An evening of tarot cards and forgiveness.
✵ A Little Raven: 1930ish (AU). Lizzie and Clara have a chat about Lizzie’s concerns, for the children she’s raising without much help from their father, the baby growing in her belly, the twins so eager to prove themselves, and the Shelby curse. Clara tries to offer a bit of comfort, but its Tommy coming home early on a Friday that assuages her concerns.
✵ Family Meeting - Modern AU Tommy, Isiah, and Clara
✵ LITTLE LADY BLINDER MASTERLIST ✵

If you had to pick between any of the batfam, who would you pick and why?
Now. Now it depends on why im picking them and what for, so obviously I need to think very carefu-
It's Tim. I pick Tim. It may surprise some of you, I know (/j), but I am rotating him in my mind at all times like a microwave meal. There is so much wrong with him. He's so normal. He is the most character ever. His backstory reads like a mary sue, but he's such an insane character that it works. He means so much to me, he's like Schrödinger's fandom character. He's either the saddest little boy or the most deranged motherfucker ever. Both are technically canon but also not.
I am the only one with a correct interpretation of him (/j) which is he's sad until he isn't and I like to throw him in situations and bounce him like a rubber ball. I have never met a character I've been more fascinated by and attached to. Literally the most character ever.
He was there when Dick's parents died at 3, and has a picture of him. That memory is what revealed Robin's identity to him, and subsequently Batman's. He goes to boarding school and is both incredibly popular and very reclusive. Everyone loves him and he doesn't understand why. When Jason dies, he stalks Dick to a circus, and bothers him AND THE TITANS for the next few months, to the point that everyone is like: do we. need to call someone. And dick just waves it off.
With Young Justice, he embezzled a batmobile through the batarang budget and Bart immediately crashed it. They went to space without anyone knowing. Tim watched his space car fuck another space car, and was then immediately introduced to a Mr Doug Side by Greta bc she misunderstood his introduction as Darkseid.
After Jason best him in the Titans Tower, Tim kicks him in the dick. And says theyre even. He has multiple future versions of him as batman which are evil and use guns. Old powerful men have a weird fascination with him and want to lock him in a box and study him.

Book recommendations for autumn
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although the temperature outside is shockingly high, I have already stepped into my autumnal state of mind. I can't think of a better fall activity than writing a Tumblr post with a list of books one can read while drinking a pumpkin spice-flavoured coffee while snacking on biscuits and listening to the rain.
Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie (or any other criminal novel, preferably read by night while covering yourself in your favourite blanket.)
Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen (a brilliant parody of gothic novels and delusional teenage girls, perfect spooky vibes)
Dead Poets Society by N.H. Kleinbaum (gay teenagers study poetry under the most magnificent teacher in entire literature)
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (It's even more cringy than you remember it from your middle school years)
The Secret History by Donna Tartt (Obnoxious terrible characters study antiquity while losing themselves in the process)
If We Were Villains by M.L.Rio (The same as the Secret History but make it Shakespeare-obsessed theater kids).
Harry Potter and the philosopher's stone by Remus Lupin (A classic, as long as you don't live under a rock you've probably read it already, nonetheless it wouldn't be an autumn book list without this novel, although it's a love-the-franchise hate-the-author situation)
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo (This book will make you regret not being a posh kid who can afford to go to YALE, it makes the idea of joining a secret society extremely appealing).
Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky (A broke law student kills a usurer, which is the beginning of an avalanche of disaster. Spoiler, The book ends with him becoming a catholic while dating an ex prostitute).
Little Women by L.M. Alcott (Watch Greta Gerwig's adaptation for an extra fall vibe, the book is wonderful as well. Makes me regret not having sisters).
Jane Eyre by the one and only Charlotte Bronte (Aka why romanticizing Victorian England is an indicator of idiocy).
Persuasion by Jane Austen (A novel that will gaslight you into believing that if you're twenty-seven your bloom is gone, you might as well never leave the house again if you're not married).
Frankenstein (This book freaks me out so much, it's gorgeously written.)
Macbeth (The moral of this drama is to never trust three witches you meet when strolling over Highlands).
Wuthering heights (I could write an entire essay about how superior Mr. Darcy is to Mr. Rochester, but Wuthering Heights still is one of the best novels I've ever read. The spooky vibes are immaculate, it made me want to travel to Haworth during fall).
The picture of Dorian's gray (Dorian Gray would've hated the "aged" TikTok filter.)
The invisible life of Addie Larue (The first line of this book is a summarization of its plot, for the entire novel "A girl is running for her life.", However, we grow to love her in the process).
That would be it. Autumn is one of my favourite seasons, and I can't wait to get the most out of it. I'm sorry in advance for the person I'll become after drinking Pumpkin Spice Latte for the first time this year. May the Christian Autumn Girls rise and sweaty, sun-burned summer preferring children fall.

As facetious as I may be when I claim that to reach Pretentiousness is to peek through the gates of artistic Valhalla, I do sincerely believe that being an art snob is both good for the soul and one of the only ethical ways to approach art point blank.
That said, it’s also very easy to get lost in the sauce, as it were, and turn pretentiousness (good) into an ego high (less good) that results in you becoming a heel (not good). Noah Baumbach’s Greenberg, starring Ben Stiller in the titular role, is a study of a pretentious man so lost in the sauce that he actively alienates everyone around him.
With that, Greenberg not only puts me three films away from completing Buambach’s filmography, but also the first feature film in which Noah cast Greta Gerwig, starting a chain of events that would ultimately lead to me making divorce jokes about the Barbie movie, a very normal thing to do.
On that note, Noah simply could not restrain himself with this one and gave multiple characters marital trouble ranging from trail separation to outright #STATUS: DIVORCED.
Though not as blatant as Marriage Story in its bleakness, Greenberg is not a fun film to watch. Ben Stiller’s Greenberg plain sucks, and you spend the entire movie with the guy. For as much as he’s a stand in for Noah’s self-insert neuroses (a spot usually reserved for divorce in one form or another), he lacks the snappy quick witted grad-student energy of some of Noah’s earlier films. Greenberg is a sad sack fresh out of a mental hospital and his miserable self-absorption wears you down where in other films it would be relatable.
This is clearly on purpose, and it’s enjoyable to watch Noah craft the narrative in this film, but it’s not fun like it would be if Wes Anderson handled the characters. This is where your own pretentiousness is key, as you can enjoy it for what it is rather than splashing about in the shallow waters of “let people enjoy things” (gah remember when that argument held any weight?) and forego art that challenges the viewer.
My own challenge with the film came through the dialog. Noah, as the child of two (divorced) academics, has always had that specific lilt to his dialog (pretentious! I love it!) but Greenberg adopts a specific early variation of therapy-speak that is both novel and grating. The phrase “hurt people hurt people” is quite literally used in this film. It makes sense considering Greenberg’s ongoing neurosis and recent contact with the mental healthcare system, but as more and more modern media takes this tone, I can see where the Baumbach Divorce Proceedings set trends a decade ahead of (beloved!) Ted Lasso pushing therapy speak to Andy-Griffith levels of wholesome moralizing.
Of course Noah, being an expert at more than Divorce, saves the entire film with the most passively toxic romance I’ve seen in a long time. Gerwig and Stiller’s characters have such an awful co-dependent love hate relationship that’s played in an understated yet skillful manner. If I were reductive (stupid) I’d accuse this film of romanticizing harmful relationships, but the film is art, not an after shcool special, so instead I’ll liken this to a very low-stakes trainwreck.
Stiller and Gerwig’s characters like each other so very much, and somehow also are so bad for each other, with Gerwig’s pushover “says sorry too much” characterization mixing with Stiller’s “generally awful basketcase” demeanor the same way ammonia and bleach mix to create chlorine gas and two very uncomfortable sex scenes.
It’s a challenging film, and yet a very good film that follows Greenberg’s attempts to deal with aging, a fear of death, and the acceptance that he doesn’t have to run from success and he should accept love from someone he doesn’t deserve to love. For how understated it is, it still manages sophistication in its character study that only Noah “Ethical Woody Allen Substitute” Baumbach could pull off.
Maybe it’s Stiller and Gerwig’s awkward chemistry, maybe it’s that Baumbach knows how to write women, maybe it’s the commentary on the rise of the “Millenial” generation that spurred a perfectly of-its-time soundtrack, but the movie and its romance managed to both challenge me and delight me in its muted sophistication. I hope they have a long and prosperous divorce.

The Sound of Mandalore
Chapter 12/20: Our Favorite Things (Reprise)
Read on AO3
<;<; Chapter 11
Tumblr media
The Duchess sat on her throne, arms crossed and face set into a serious expression.
“It is not like Mandalorian children to be secretive,” she said, standing to approach the children who all stood in a line in front of her. She’d been a politician long enough to see that they were hiding something—well, something besides the fact that they’d been missing for as long as they had been.
Lark was the first to speak up, her face expertly masked with an innocuous expression. “We’re not being secretive, Duchess.”
Satine lifted an eyebrow, fixing a serious glare on the eldest girl. “Is that so?” she asked. “Well, it is also not like Mandalorian children to steal a royal ship and disappear for two days without a word.”
“I would argue that that’s exactly what Mandalorian children would do,” Chas countered before quickly deciding that it was in his best interest to shut up.
That earned a humorless smile from the Duchess, who paced along the row of totally guilty children, inspecting them as she went. “Alright, well which one of you is going to tell me the truth. Dreek? Brig? Korkie?”
“Where do you think we were, Auntie?” Korkie asked, looking as innocent as possible. “If you don’t believe us, then you must have some idea of where you think we were.” He looked at Satine knowingly, as if daring her to say it out loud. He could tell that the correct answer may have crossed her mind. The only problem was, she just couldn’t believe that they would do such a thing.
“Did that pirate Hondo put you up to something?” Hondo had been the last person to see them before they vanished. It wouldn’t be all that surprising of an explanation.
The kids all shook their heads no.
Satine let out an exasperated breath. “Well then, if you weren’t off playing pirates, I shall have to assume that you were simply trying to escape your studies by disappearing into orbit around Mandalore. Is that alright?”
The children shared a look amongst themselves before nodding vehemently. “Yes, yes, that’s what we did!” Brig answered for them, perking up immediately.
“I see. In that case, I expect you to make up for it by completing double the amount of work for tomorrow,” the Duchess instructed, earning a collective groan from the children. “Now off you go.”
They dutifully did as she told, stomping off to the wing of the palace where their quarters were.
“We should have just told her the truth,” Dreek said dejectedly, stepping out onto their balcony to sulk.
Lark joined him. “We didn’t do anything wrong!”
“Well, except fly unaccompanied to another planet in the middle of a galactic war,” Korkie mumbled.
“We just wanted to see him!” defended Chas. “The least they could have done was let us say hello.”
Tamra frowned deeply. “I didn’t like that little green guy.”
“Me neither,” Greta agreed.
They fell into a miserable silence, each contemplating their own frustration with the situation. Before, they had at least been able to hope that there was something they could do to bring their teacher back. Now, that hope was gone.
“Maybe we can try meditating like Master Kenobi taught us,” Brig supplied, desperate to find some solution. No one wanted to spend the rest of their holidays in this sorry state. “We can say the things we like about the galaxy. Maybe then we’ll feel better.”
A few halfhearted murmurs of agreement sounded, and they shuffled together to form a small circle on the ground.
“Greta, you first,” Brig said, nodding to the littlest girl.
She nodded, closing her eyes as she’d been taught. “Tookas,” she said finally, trying hard to let the image of the cute furry beast soothe her mind.
“Uj cake,” Chas was next.
Then Dreek. “Practicing forms.”
Korkie looked deep his heart to find a good answer, finally settling on a more recent memory. “Doing the Mandokar with Aunt Satine.”
The circle fell silent once again, briefly lost in their own recollection of that moment.
“I don’t feel any better,” Greta mumbled, opening her sad eyes. “Now I just miss him more.”
“Keep thinking of nice things,” Korkie urged her, setting a comforting hand on her knee.
More intently, Dreek added, “Jetpacks.”
“Lifting rocks.” Lark.
“The gardens.” Brig.
And then a voice not belonging to any of the children. A stronger, much older voice speaking to them from the balcony door.
“Mandalore.”
The children’s eyes flew open to see Obi-Wan standing there, and they rushed to their feet.
“Master Kenobi!” they called out, nearly toppling him to the ground as they wrapped him in tight hugs, which he accepted with outstretched arms. The Force sang around them, and Obi-Wan knew he’d made the right decision already, if not for Satine, then for these children.
“Are we naming our favorite things in the galaxy again?” he asked cheerfully, “Well in that case, I’d like to add all of you: Greta, Tamra, Brig, Chas, Lark, Dreek, and of course, you, Korkie.” He looked at each of them in turn with a smile behind his beard, looking happier than ever. “I’m so glad to see you all.”
“We missed you!” Chas and Brig rushed to say, their melancholy mood completely evaporated.
“I missed you too,” he said in return, patting Tamra’s shoulder and pulling Greta into his side.
From the doorway, the Duchess stood and watched the happy reunion. Catching a glimpse of her over Obi-Wan’s shoulder, Dreek immediately called out, “Duchess Satine! Look! Master Kenobi has come back from the Temple!”
The other children turned and echoed him, shouting their excitement at his return. The Duchess had yet to say a word.
With his heart in his throat, Obi-Wan stood and turned to face her, thankful—at the moment—for the distance between them. His grin fell away as he marveled at her.
“Good evening, Duchess,” he spoke with a bow, his typical level of formality back in full force.
Satine fought back a smile and nodded in return. “Good evening.”
The children remained silent, glancing between their teacher and the Duchess, suddenly wondering if the two had forgotten they were there. It was silent for several moments more before the Duchess addressed them directly.
“Alright, inside, all of you. You are excused from your studies for the evening.” With a cheer, they all ran inside, leaving the Jedi and the Duchess alone on the balcony under the slowly darkening sky.
The palace was quiet. Somehow even the noise from the speeder lanes seemed muted. Or perhaps it was just Obi-Wan, whose entire awareness currently revolved around the Duchess. She stood near the doorway for several more agonizing moments until she finally began to cross the distance between them. As she came closer, oh so slowly, he was fairly certain he stopped breathing.
She came to a stop in front of him.
“You left without saying goodbye,” she spoke softly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear before looking up at him. “Even to the children.”
Obi-Wan nodded in acknowledgement. “It was wrong of me. I am deeply sorry.”
Satine’s gaze traveled up to his. Her eyes swirled with curiosity, and perhaps a hint of residual hurt as well. “Why did you?”
The Jedi drew in a shuddering breath, fighting back the instinct to ignore the question and run. “Don’t ask me that unless you truly want the answer,” he warned. Having only just returned, he didn’t want to overstep. What he was doing was crazy, and part of him still felt unsure. He was in new territory here. It was in his nature to proceed with caution.
Satine looked at him quizzically. Her mouth opened and shut several times like she was struggling to find the right response, but before she got a chance to say anything, their moment was ended abruptly by Senator Merrik.
“Master Kenobi, I had no idea you’d be returning,” he spoke. “How wonderful.”
Obi-Wan stepped away from Satine and met Merrik’s insincere gaze. Casting one last look back at Satine, he began to walk toward the palace doors.
Satine’s voice stopped him in his tracks. “Obi-Wan, you are here to… stay… are you not?” she asked, a trace of something in her words.
How he had hoped and prayed to hear that word from her, all those years ago. Stay. He didn’t want to think about what it might mean on her lips now.
“You need only ask, Duchess. I follow the will of the Force.”
And that, he knew, was all she needed to hear to know what his implications were. If she wished for him to stay, he would, and happily.
The Senator stood on the balcony, knowing full-well that he was being left out of some unspoken part of this conversation. He turned a suspicious gaze on Satine as she watched Obi-Wan disappear into the Palace, an expression he didn’t recognize on her face.
The tides were changing on Mandalore, alright. Only time would tell who ended up the victor, and who would end up losing everything.

Ncuti Gatwa made the top of The List Hot 100 - a list celebrating the 100 most important cultural contributors in Scotland in 2022
The article reads: You may know him as the gregarious Eric Effiong in Netflix's 'Sex Education' or perhaps as the next incarnation of the legendary Time Lord, but Ncuti Gatwa is aslo a proud Scot, with his performing roots deeply embedded in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Fife.
'My Dad was studying at Edinburgh University so I grew up in Black Avenue, which was like accommodation for international families because we had just come from Rwanda.' But it was a move to Fife at the age of 14 that started Gatwa's love affair with performing. 'My drama teacher at Dunfermline High School was like, you really. need to consider going to the Royal Conservatoire. And she gave me David Tennant's Hamlet and said "watch this. This is an actor." I was like "oh my God".' What, then, could more full circle than him stepping into his shoes at the next Doctor Who?
In September, the BBC broke the news that Gatwa would be taking on this iconic role, making him the first ever Black actor (and fourth Scot) to do so in the shows' 59-year history. 'I've known since about February so it's been tricky keeping this under wraps: I have a very big mouth!' he said on the red carpet folowing the announcement. 'But it's a true honour. This role is an insitution. It means a lot to so many people, including myself. It makes everyone feel seen as well.'
Reflecting on the casting process, Gatwa recalls 'prepping for the role of the Doctor and watching all the episodes again and watching Russell T Davies and David [Tennant]'s work. I was overcome with the need to get the job! I was like "I want to work with Russel". His writing is so clever. I just feel very honoured that he saw something in me that he likes. He's going to take me to the universe, around the stars and galaxies.'
Gatwa may be over the moon now, but the road to get here was rough. While relentlessly attending auditions in London, Gatwa found hmself homeless for several months before one booking would change his life forever. 'It was turbulent, you know? But I feel so grateful that Sex Education came into my life.' A month after its release in 2019, the first season had been streamed over 40 million times, shooting its stars to international fame overnight. 'In this streaming age, a show drops across 150 countries in a second so it took a long time to figure out what the hell was going on in my life. I'd be in Tesco and someone would ask for a selfie and I'd have no idea why!'
Three seasons in, he still has a lot of love for Sex Education and Eric, a character he's lifted with side-splitting one-liners such as 'you detty pig'. But how does he find returning to Moordale High? 'Playing a teenager, especially as a 30-year-old man, is getting trickier as the days go on, let me tell you,' he cackles. 'But it's lovely to return to that cast. They are like my children.'
Among these co-stars is Emma Mackey who will appear alongside Gatwa in Greta Gerwig's upcoming Barbie. 'I remember the casting director telling me "Greta's seen your tape and she really likes it". Well, that wasn't good enough', he deadpans. 'No stone must be left unturned! So I did about tne other takes and like "SEND THEM ALL TO GRETA!" His tenacity paid off and he now describes Gerwig as 'a creative kindred spirit'.
Gatwa finds himself on the brink of A-list stardom, his strong grasp of what's important shows grace and conviction. 'It's just about learning to be really grateful,' he insists. 'And also to take the work seriously but not yourself seriously. It's an amazing job that we get to do but it is just a job. I'm slowly learning how to take it in my stride.'

greed bloomed from an orchid ~ little women (part I: the seed episode 1 recap)
Warning: Read at the risk of spoilers
I recently finished watching Little Women, which just completed its 12 episode on Netflix. If you haven't watched the show and you're wondering if the title is a homage to Louisa May Alcott's famous novel, the title of the show was inspired by the novel and is a very loose retelling of the book. Little Women, the k-drama, is a dark and twisted adaptation that takes place in a modern day hyper-capitalistic South Korea that is fueled by greed and selfish pursuit. However, like the novel, the show is a story about sisters, but imagine Beth dying as an infant.
There's an incident in the book, where Meg, impulsively buys expensive fabric that her husband cannot afford because she gets miffed by Sallie. For the most part, Meg, is a kind loyal sister, but throughout the book, we see that Meg is kinda vain and we see her aspiring to be part of an upper class that she could never belong to. Oh In Joo, her k-drama counterpart, is an exaggerated version of these flaws -In Joo can't stop talking about how poor she is and as she states herself, the only things she's ever cared for are men and money. Her younger sister, Oh In-Kyung, is based off of Jo. Like Jo, In-Kyung is fiercely independent and her goals in life are larger than the mere need to make money. In-Kyung is a journalist who is deeply passionate about her work and has an unyielding commitment to pursue the truth. She, like Jo, spent much of her life under the care of her cold but wealthy nurse turned real estate agent great aunt, Hye-Soek.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The youngest sister is the teenage On In Hye, who like her novel counterpart, Amy, is a prodigious art student studying in a prestigious high school for the arts in Seoul. For me, In-Hye reminds me of Greta Gerwig's Amy played by Florence Hugh. At first glance, In Hye, much like her eldest sister, is fixated on how her poverty impedes her dreams to study abroad in Europe. In-Hye appears ruthless and selfish in her approach initially to achieve her goals, even at the cost of her family's dignity. However, through the course of the show, the audience grows to appreciate her shrewdness and sensibility, which equips her to handle the obstacles thrown at her and her family much better than her impulsive and often foolish older sisters.
Tumblr media
As a viewer, I found In-Hye and In Joo's characters to be nauseating and I think its because I'm used to watching k-drama protagonists that are relentless do-gooders with their only flaw perhaps being that they are too hard on them. In-Hye and In Joo's relentless pursuit of wealth is a reflection of the world that we live in- one in which we've normalized, money is essential for survival. To have no money is to suffer a kind of death. For In Joo and In Hye , this is a reality as they both have the shared memory of losing their infant sister because their family was too poor to get their sister in the hospital in time. While In Joo was old enough to remember this, In-Hye, who wasn't even born yet has these memories implanted into her by their mother, who told her the story as a child. The lives of all three sisters begins to drastically change when it starts to intersect with the politically powerful Won family, once helmed by the powerful patriarch, Won Ki Seon, which now consists of his son-in-law (also mayoral candidate and lawyer) Park Jae Sang, his daughter Won-Sang Ah, and his teenage granddaughter, Park Hyorin.
In-kyung ends up at logger-heads with Park Jae Sang, when she attempts to his expose his corruption as a lawyer on the Bobae Savings Bank case, where the bankruptcy of the bank that wrecked the lives of innocent people and embezzlement of 140 billion won that is transferred to one of the Won's family companies is cleverly covered up by the apparent suicides of 4 of the bank presidents. Park Jae Sang is a public favorite for the Seoul mayor position because of his altruistic work and his own rags to riches story of being the son of a former chauffeur. Her attempts to expose Park Jae Sang and hamper his political ambitions end up disastrously failing when he uses his influence to reveal In-kyung's alcoholism. She ends up being suspended from work for drinking on the job and is forced to work freelance. In-kyung, however, is still determined in her efforts to obtain justice for the victims of the bank scandal. When she reaches out to interview one of the nephews of the former bank presidents, she and her friend Ha Jong-ho are shocked to find him killed in a car accident and a mysterious blue orchid left at the scene of the accident.
In Joo is a lowly bookkeeper for Orchid E&C, a firm managed by the Won family. In Joo is an outcast at work due to her lack of education and social status. However, over the course of several years, she develops a close bond with Jin Hwa-young, a senior bookkeeper and secretary, who treats her like a younger sister. Before Hwa-young goes on a trip to Europe, she has the naive In Joo sign on a contract written in English, a language she doesn't know. At the office, In Joo ends up meeting Choi Do Il, one of Hwa-young's close colleagues, who asks if In Joo is aware of Hwayoung's whereabouts as she never returned to work after her Europe trip. A worried In Joo visits Hwa-young's home only to find her best friend hanging dead in her closet along with a suicide note and the same blue orchid that In-kyung encountered at the accident. A devastated In-Joo refuses to believe that her friend would unalive herself let alone embezzle 70 billion won from an illegal company slush fund before her death. To add to the layer of shock that she's already experiencing, In Joo finds that her friend left her 2 billion won in yoga studio locker. Seeing that much money for the first time in her life, In Joo is in tears, but also becomes more determined to team up with Choi Do-Il to uncover the mystery of the 70 billion won and absolve her friend.
Finally, In-Hye strikes a friendship with Park Hyo-rin. Her talent is noticed by Park Jae Sang and Won Sang ah and they commission her to paint a portrait of Hyo-rin. The two girls bond over their relatively quite dispositions and In-hye is in awe of the family's affluence. In-Hye also becomes the newest scholarship recipient of the Park Jae Sang family and her close relationship with Hyo-rin results in her becoming increasingly more aware of the dark truths that are carefully concealed behind the family's picture perfect demeanor.
Little Women has an incredibly detailed plot with many twists and turns that leaves the audience constantly guessing. The plot is balanced well with the dynamics between the characters. However, what truly allows is Little Women to shine is that it doesn't shy away from being audacious. A show of this nature runs the risk of being branded as a makjang and instead of fearing such a definition, Little Women wholly embraces the idea of making crazy and risky decisions with how the plot progresses. It's also a show that's not afraid to unravel the psyche of its very characteristics. The writers of this show are not afraid to engage in the blatant psychoanalysis of it's characters. As a viewer, I struggle with defining Little Women. Is it a psychological thriller? A heist drama? Or, perhaps a romance? Regardless, a well written and engaging story with an amazing ensemble cast makes this one of the defining k-dramas of the year.

constance, known to those around her as connie grew up between the hills of los angeles, and the family mansion in aurora bay. depending on whether her multi-million dollar parents were fighting, and they needed to get out of town before the media picked up another juicy story on the vanderbilts. they'd built a legal empire from the ground up, and if you could afford their services, vanderbilt-dawson could get anyone out of their charges. the firm were all about discretion, and have represented people that may or may not have gotten away with serious crimes... but of course, that's just hearsay. connie had five siblings, but unfortunately lost one of her youngest brothers to leukemia when he was a teenager. he was the only member of the family that truly loved and supported connie. it almost destroyed her when he passed.
connie had everything she needed in life, except for a proper family life. she always belived her parents had kids out of societal expectations and potential succession, rather than wanting kids. they were reared to be the perfect little society kids, seen but not heard. but, of course, cracks would appear. always the intelligent one of the family, but second to her brother, connie had to fight tooth and nail for her fathers attention. after years of trying to prove she was the right person to succeed their father, connie gave up, and left to study and work in france till she 30. connie then settled back in aurora bay while her family were permanently back in los angeles. at 34, she was ordered to come to the familly home she'd refused to go back to for years now, by her father.
one might wonder, why was a thirty-something woman beckoned back home? well, her father had a little surprise waiting for her back at the housee, a planned business marriage for her with a meyer's son. originally, connie refused, but eventually was blackmailed by her father. she resented him seeing her as a pawn, rather than a person with skills and potential. connie never hated will, but she certainly didn't love him. they had an agreement of playing house when around the family, but then went their separate ways to date other people. It took half a year before Connie's anger at the situation reached the brim, and she initiated the divorce for the sake of both herself and will. this infuriated her father. but this wasn't the only way connie planned to stick it to her dad. she'd been working, conveniently, at one of her fathers competitors companies. only a small player at this point, the firm wasn't on his radar till earlier in the year when they grew in power and shares, and she reached a senior associate roll. if connie couldn't have her rightful place at vanderbilt-dawson, she'd beat them at their own game. connie is known for being honest, very blunt. she doesnt have much patience. incredibly book smart, and driven by spite and vengence, she has a flame of determination that could never be smouldered.

{the marauders are my guilty pleasure, so if you're a marauders fan and you’re seeing this, you're cool and I love you and we should probably be friends}
I'll post mostly about music, but here are some things you'll probably find on this blog:
arctic monkeys (my favourite humans)
the 1975 (my newest hyperfixation)
the last shadow puppets
greta van fleet
the strokes
lana del rey
phoebe bridgers
art
books, poems, quotes
and other similar things!
If we have similar interests, feel free to reach out if you wanna be friends! I love to chat about my favourite bands and other things with people who enjoy them equally as much as I do, but beware cause if you get me going I may not stop.
Anyways, much love, get some sleep, drive save, all the best :)

My top movies of 2023
Of 103 new releases I saw this year, these were the best (and, below, the worst and the most befuddling):
Tumblr media
10. PERFECT DAYS: Snatching beauty from the mundane is easier said than done, and easier rendered with shlock than sophistication. Wim Wenders pulls it off in this gorgeous story of a Tokyo toilet cleaner who’s attuned to the world with poetry and hard-won wisdom.
Tumblr media
9. JOYLAND: One of many luminous shots tracks a backup erotic dancer driving home a giant cardboard cutout of his transgender frontwoman — as close as he’ll come to holding her hand in public. In this vivid Pakistani family drama, social strictures squeeze men, women, and everyone in between.
Tumblr media
8. YOU HURT MY FEELINGS: Ordinary human relationships get so complex they make your head spin in Nicole Holofcener’s talky, thorny, funny study of the hard truths and sweet lies that populate every day. “Can you shut up and keep talking?”
Tumblr media
7. BEYOND UTOPIA: This pained and profound documentary about North Korean defectors contains some of the most remarkable footage I’ve seen, inside one family’s treacherous attempt at escape. We see so scarcely into the journeys of millions of people fleeing disaster all around the world each year. Here is a beam of light.
Tumblr media
6. FOUR DAUGHTERS: In this extraordinary, line-blurring documentary, a lively and haunted formal innovation unspools the story of a Tunisian family, and the moments when playing a role — mother, daughter, wife, citizen, goth, rebel, Satanist, zealot — becomes all too real.
Tumblr media
5. BARBIE: I went in skeptical: all this just to sell toys? One of 2023’s lessons is to trust Greta Gerwig no matter what. Too many Barbie partisans damn it with faint praise as simply a fun movie (and it deliriously is). But Gerwig layers in the emotion of innocence lost and the moral rectitude of interrogating our consumerist inheritance: ballast for the fantasia.
Tumblr media
4. ALL OF US STRANGERS: Andrew Haigh’s London ghost story has some twists up its sleeve, which makes the forthrightness of its emotion all the more bracing. Death, of course, makes strangers of us all. Love collapses the distance.
Tumblr media
3. KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON: A whole movie told through Robert De Niro’s eyewear: the chessboard reflected in the glasses of the King; the riding goggles that make him look like an owl, portent of death. One of a million details that add up to a masterpiece in Martin Scorsese’s dramatization of the clash between two worlds and two ways of being.
Tumblr media
2. OPPENHEIMER: Now I am become death, destroyer of worlds. This is the bomb.
Tumblr media
1. PAST LIVES: The brilliance of Celine Song’s play on inyeon is not just the wisdom of its story of love, immigration, and divided selves, but their aching visual illustration in a climactic tracking shot that moves through emotional time. Greta Lee is marvelous. Sometimes I cry just thinking about it.

I’m Just Ken in BARBIE

Japanese karaoke rendition of House of the Rising Sun in PERFECT DAYS
Murder on the Dancefloor naked ending to SALTBURN
Most unhinged moments
THE BURIAL: Jamie Foxx adds up 13 + 11 to equal 26
M3GAN: Children cheer enthusiastically for roasted chestnuts
PASSAGES: The homework assignment for a class of roughly 10-year-olds is writing like two sentences about what they did that weekend
RED, WHITE & ROYAL BLUE: The president’s son and the prince have a romantic dance-floor stare into each other’s eyes when everybody else drops to the floor during Low
SANCTUARY: Christopher Abbott orders a Belgian waffle with passion fruit jam from room service in Denver
Best character name: Amos Klobuchar in THEATER CAMP
Best dog performance: Messi in ANATOMY OF A FALL
Best mention of Brown (tie): Using a Doritos bag as a condom in FAIR PLAY and roofie-ing the chancellor to get admitted in DICKS: THE MUSICAL
Most distressing depiction of a villainous queer Politico reporter who hangs out at coffee shops in Shaw: RED, WHITE & ROYAL BLUE
Best hard-charging student newspaper with a pretentious Latin motto: THE TEACHERS’ LOUNGE
