I just finished reading When All the World Sleeps, and I loved it! I was scared, at first, because grit and murder aren't my usual reading material, but Bel and Daniel's conversations were so honest and good, and the writing style just drew me in. I was so glad they got an ending they deserved.

Aw, this is so lovely to hear--thank you for writing in! Lisa Henry and JA Rock are brilliant authors, both incredibly talented in their own right and absolutely magical when they work together. For a real treat, check it out in audio too--the narrator brings the book to life in a whole new way

Prompt: Sunshine and butter (idk what kind of prompts you're looking for but there you go)

“Okay, Sunny, this is the last straw!”

The taller of the two women (her ebony tresses are pulled back into a tight bun which you just know means business) stomps towards her shorter counterpart and plucks the dish of butter from her hands with an exasperated sort of sound, but it’s apparent that it’s already much too late. The margarine has melted and, in its stead, there’s a small puddle of yellow that’s standing by, a testament in itself.

“See, this is why I should be in charge of handling the butter; now we’re going to have to remember to pick some more up on the next grocery run.”

Sunny laughs, a ringing noise of exuberance, and mutters something about Luna being too uptight for her own good and, in return for the comment, receives a playful smack on one freckled, sun-kissed arm, causing her to laugh louder.

Ugandan people eat actual food 😂 But yeah, maybe some insects. I was thinking they'd start with posho (kind of like oatmeal?) and get steadily weirder from there.

oh I know they eat normal food, just thinking that if they are looking for weird Ugandan snacks then insects most definitely would appear at some point. I’ve never been to Uganda, only got friends who has, so I don’t know about that much about what kind of snacks they have (other than insects)

I'd love to see you write a sex pollen fic? Idk if you've written one before. But one with detail, and motive, and how the characters deal afterwards. I think that would be really cool.

Aw, thanks! I think I attempted to write one once, and, perhaps not surprisingly, it sort of collapsed under the weight of the details and reactions. I think in my head sometimes I’m like “ooh, yeah, sex pollen, fun and hot!” and then when I sit down to write it I am like “wait wait I need to contemplate the next year of their relationship as they work through all the ramifications of this.”

Oh! Actually, you know what, I just remembered that The Ribbon on My… is, among a lot of other things, a story where Stiles and Derek’s relationship started under the influence of sex pollen:

Stiles never asked Derek to fuck him, and Derek knew it wasn’t because Stiles didn’t want to.

They had done it that way before. Derek had fucked Stiles a week before they started dating. That time, their first time, was under the influence of the full moon and a strain of wolfsbane Stiles insisted on referring to as red kryptonite, which Derek had stumbled into while the rest of the pack were off hunting together. Stiles had tried to help him wash it off, and literally everyone they knew was aware of what had happened next. Most of the wolves had heard at least some of it, including Stiles’s extremely vocal enjoyment of the whole thing.

…

Derek wouldn’t actually mind fucking Stiles–it wouldn’t be like it had been that night. It would be good, but he wouldn’t be out of control. Now that he thought about it, though, there was a definite negative space where neither of them ever brought it up. Derek suspected there was a big Talk looming about what happened that night and the issues Stiles thought Derek had about it.

He didn’t, really. He’d felt awful about it for a week, and then he’d had a terrifying conversation with the sheriff, an even more terrifying conversation with Scott, and before he could be menaced by everyone else who knew both of them he’d cracked and talked to Stiles. That had been almost not terrifying at all, and it had ended with yet more sex that stopped Derek from worrying about where things were going.

So if you were implying that I might be more interested in every single other part of a sex pollen story than the sex (like: but then what do they each get the other for Christmas several months later, when they have started dating as a result of the whole sex pollen incident???) the evidence indicates that you would be right.

(I mean, also there’s Every Marine a Wolfbrother, for “outside force causes human dudes to need to fuck each other,” which does at least actually include the wolf-bond-induced dub-con heat porn, but also  definitely includes details and motivations and how characters deal with the various aftermaths, and which may have used up my ability to contemplate that kind of fictional situation for a decade or so.)

im tryna read mcpricely stuff, any recs?

hey! im surprised i got this ask over here instead of on my sideblog lol but i definitely have a lot of recs!

first, you definitely have to read the bible: A Portrait of Kevin Price as Young Mormon by neverbirds. This is by far the most impactful fic in the fandom. Rent out a couple of hours on the couch and read it straight through. I first read this years ago, and my last reread was about a year back? And I still think about this shit at least once a week. After that, read the author’s companion fic: A Sketch of Connor McKinley. It’s the missing scenes from A Portrait from Connor’s perspective.

Reading anything adele neverbirds has written is a good bet tbh, but quite a few of her fics are unfinished. Read those at your own risk bc you will become obsessed with them and will be driven mad by the lack of an ending. Even so, this fandom owes neverbirds the world.

Little Syncopations by deliarium is also a great starter fic. Classic 5+1 fic from Connor’s perspective. I think this one established a lot of well-known tropes in the mcpriceley fandom that we all joke about.

There’s also this really, really long running fic called Four States, One Journey by strengthsbasedmediocrity. I haven’t been able to bring myself to read it yet because it’s long, heavy, and I’m not emotionally stable enough to embark on this journey yet. But it’s one hell of a fic from what I’ve heard. If you’re looking for a well-balanced meal and maybe some emotional catharsis, this one’s up there with A Portrait.

A huge fav of mine is also miserably, honestly, imperceptively by cherryfizzies. Just the summary alone is iconic, another trope-establisher in this fandom: oblivious!kevin and emotionally-mature!arnaba. 

Just about anything on this list of @appleflavoredkitkats‘s is iconic. This is dedication tbh, here’s the list. I’ve found so many of my favorite fics through that list.

Ok idk how old you are so idk how appropriate this is but it wouldn’t be complete without mentioning greerian ‘s contributions to this fandom. I think we collectively cancelled him a few years back bc of some of the fucked up borderline torture porn he was writing (he was also here on tumblr under the same name), but he’s got the most iconic smut and angst fics around I think. Another major trope establisher, this fic here The Size of Orlando, Florida is the origin of praise-kink!kevin, which everyone assumes is canon these days. There’s a companion fic to this one as well, With a Sunflower Tie. Just steer clear of the pricingham and Soul-Eater and you’ll be fine. The fact that I can name Soul-Eater by name when I only read like two paragraphs of it two years ago is a testament to how overwhelmingly dark it is. If you have any sort of sexual trauma, stay away from it.

Mirimea is also an iconic smut writer of the first-gen BOM fans, with classics like It Is Now and Slow Hand, both of which have reread value. Mirimea also gave us As It Is, which is one of my favorite soulmate AUs for any fandom ever.

As far as other tumblr users go, i recommend @elderkevinmckinley and my mutual @statsvitenskap xx. I believe they’re also on AO3 under the same usernames. Definitely check their stuff out too!

If you thought this whole post was too long and you don’t want to read any of it, PLEASE READ THIS RIGHT HERE. Because you are missing out if you don’t read ESawyer’s works. She’s here as @e-sawyer as well and I owe her all the rights. She writes a lot of multichapter stuff, as well as one-shots. I don’t think she’s written a single fic that didn’t knock all my expectations out of the park. She recently finished Loveth His Children, which is from Jack’s perspective (I’m a sucker for fics from OC/very minor characters’ POV) which was so so so good omg I can’t recommend it enough. A couple of her other iconic multichapter works are There's Only Good Things Ahead of Us Now, Kev, The 11 Things That This Gay Ex-Mormon Will Achieve, and this series In Darkness, Light. She’s also got this series of masseuse!connor fics which i adore: Magic Hands. She’s also got this iconic smutty one shot Unholy Matrimony if you’re interested in nsfw stuff. Another legendary one-shot: 2:00 AM. Also she just started this new multichapter fic that centers around the Price family dynamics against a McPriceley backdrop and I’m already obsessed with it: Cardboard Mother. This turned into a really ugly ramble but she’s literally my favorite author in this fandom right now. Love your work ma’am xx
