Katharine was abandoned at the age of eight by her parents. While she had been with them, it was not a healthy or stable relationship. She was forced to watch her parents constantly fight and leave the house for days at a time. She rarely had enough food in the house to keep her going and would often get fed by neighbors or soup kitchens as a child.

She was placed into foster care once neighbors reports her parents’ disappearance. She jumped from group homes/foster parents until she was about sixteen.

At sixteen she dropped out of school (and got her GED instead) and ran away from her group home to live on her own. She made due through petty crimes (pick-pocketing and breaking-and-entering) or by charming a stranger into letting her into their home for the night.

At eighteen, Katharine legally changed her surname so she wouldn’t be related to her birth parents. She also didn’t want to risk her bio-parents ever finding her.

Katharine met her husband through a fake charity event where she was posing as an event coordinator (but really using it to steal people’s money). Winston found her charming after a handful of conversations with her, and ended up asking her out for dinner the following evening. She figured she would only be kept around for a bit and tried to get as much money out of him until he kicked her aside, but found herself falling for him after continuous months of seeing each other. The pair were engaged and married by the one year mark, much to his family’s horror.

Prior to meeting Winston, she really didn’t believe in love or the idea of marriage. Looking back at her relationship though, she’s realized it was a giant whirlwind of love-bombing and subtle manipulation on his side to her that kept her blinded to what was going on. Having what felt like a “fairy-tale” romance had her turning a blind eye to some of the red flags she would’ve otherwise not put up with before.

Here it is! After far too long! Sorry it took thing along, but I just finished two weeks of shows and tech weeks and I graduate next week so I’ve been a bit busy. But here’s the next chapter. In the future they will be longer, but I’m currently just setting up the story. Also Arthur makes an appearance. So here it is!

Daybreak arrived slowly for Bella. She sat in a single cell, where the air was stuffy and the dirt beneath her cling to her skin. There was a bale of hay in the corner that acted as a makeshift bed, but Bella didn’t bother to use it. She spent the night searching for any way to get out of her prison, but ultimately found no escape. Now she sat on the floor, back leaning against the stone wall.

The thudding of foot steps rang through the cave. Shuffling of the night guards following soon after. A faint “Good morning Sire” was heard from further up the hall, but Bella kept her eyes to the ground as the footsteps became closer. Suddenly they stopped. Bella quickly glanced in the direction of the cell door, before quickly looking down again.

The eldest prince stood in front of her cell. His face was unreadable as he spoke, “What is a Noctis like yourself doing in Gotham?” Bella grimaced at the mention of her people leaving his filthy mouth.

“Attempting to rob you. Or are you just so stupid that you already forgot about our little tussle?”

“You can’t speak to him like that! He’s your prince!” Another voice rang out. Bella raised her head making eye contact with a ginger, about the same age as the prince.

She scoffed, “He’s no prince of mine.”

The ginger opened his mouth to say more, but was cut off, “Wally, you aren’t helping.” The man muttered a quick ‘sorry’ before the prince spoke again. “The king exiled your people from Gotham. What are you doing with in its borders?”

“Having a party.”

Dick groaned, a hand running through his hair, “You do realize I have the power to kill you correct?”

“And do you realize I don’t give a jacks ass?”

“Can you please just answer one simple question?! I’m trying to reduce your sentence, okay!” His hands banged against the bars on the door, making Bella flinch slightly, but she quickly regained her composure.

“I need to eat in order to live. In order to eat I need coins. I feel a lot better stealing from some stuck up princes that I do stealing for some poor villagers.” She snapped. Her eyes gave Dick a glare that almost made him step back, “Sorry if you were hoping for something more interesting”

He took a breath, “Thank you. Now I can start getting you out of here.”

“Wait… Dick what are you doing?” Wally eyed his friend and the girl. “This doesn’t seem like a great idea…”

The prince shrugged, patting his squire on the back, “Can’t blame a girl for being hungry. She is by far one of the least threatening criminals of Gotham. And we need to extra room for actual threats.”

“Oh trust me. I can be a whole lot more threatening than this.”

Taking in a deep breath, he ran a hand down his face, “You aren’t making this any easier on yourself.” He was met only with a glare, “Okay, I’ll talk to the king and hopefully you’ll be free to go.” Bella ignored him, picking at the stone floor. Dick sighed once more before making his way back down the hall.

Jason stood at the entrance to the underground tunnels, a sigh leaving his lips. “God dammit Jackie…” Lighting a torch, he descended the steps to the tunnels below the castle. Small mutterings fill the narrow passageway as he starts his hunt to find the ‘disruption’.

As Jason neared the edge of the hallway, he found himself in front of a brick wall. From behind, crashes, bangs and small curses could be heard. Jason shook his head, his hand reaching for a brick slightly off center and pushed it, revealing a hidden door. It inched open, casting a sliver of warm orange glow onto his face. He opened the door all the way, not surprised with the sight before him, “Caught you at a bad time?”

Jackie stood before him, arms piled high with various armors and weapons. By her feet was scattered armor pieces that fell from her grasp. She was stuck with a deer in headlights expression, but slowly it morphed into a forced grin, an awkward laugh leaving her lips, “Oh hey pal! Didn’t see you there?”

“Jackie what are you doing down here in the middle of the day? This place should only be used for emergencies.” Jason sighed, placing his torch in a holder on the wall.

“But it was an emergency!” She held up her hands in defense, causing all the metal to crash to the ground. She winced letting out a small sorry. She met Jason’s expectant stare with pouty lips

Jason sighed,now looking at the cluttered stone floor, “Well what was so important?”

“I had to hide all the new stuff I made you or Damian would have taken it!”

His stern expression shattered into a series of laughs, “You’re going to be the death of me,” Jason walked forward engulfing Jackie in his arms. She pouted her lip jutting out.

“This is no laughing matter Jason! This is serious business buddy!”

“Oh my apologies love. Didn’t mean to offend you. Now come on. We better get out of her before we get caught.” Pressing a light kiss to her temple, he took her hand leading her around the discarded metal. He froze when he saw a figure standing at the door.

“Um… Good Day Sire?”

In the doorway was Arthur Goodwin, a well trusted knight. He had a tight smile, eyes swimming with nerves. He was clutching a necklace in his fist, which dropped when he hurriedly bowed before the prince. He dove to pick it up almost immediately.

Their intertwined hands dropped as the two jumped away from each other. Jackie stumbled over a chest plate, causing her to tumble to the floor. She shot up a second later, her hands flailing around her. Collecting herself, she put on a questionable smirk and leaned against the wall, “Oh hey Arthur… You come here often?” The sound of Jason’s hand slapping against his face echoed across the awkward silence.

Standing up, Arthur began to sputter out an excuse, but none of his words formed an actual sentence. Jason raised his hand hand, causing his blubbering to stop, “Arthur. What are you doing down here?”

“I was just on my way to the vaults I swear! But I heard voices so I came to investigate and that’s when I noticed the opening where a wall use to be. Then I saw… you guys?” He looked in between the two, his eyebrows raised, “Are you… courting?”

Jason grasps onto Arthur’s collar bringing him closer. Jason was only a few inches taller than the knight, but he still cowered in the presence of the prince. Jason’s eyes were filled with rage as he spoke, “If you dare speak about what you saw to anyone, I won’t hesitate to strip you from your title. Do I make myself clear?” Arthur nodded his head rapidly. Jason drop his grip causing Arthur to stumble back some, “Good. Now why are you going to vaults? You should know knights aren’t allowed down there without a direct order.”

Arthur clear his throat before speaking, “I was given the order from Prince Richard, sir. My newest task is watching over a prisoner at the Prince’s request. He wanted me to take this necklace down to the vault. Apparently it is very important to her.” He held up a black chain that held a periwinkle pendant on the end. When held up to the light, specks of blue and purple filled the room.

Jackie awed at the colors spotted around and Jason couldn’t help but let a smile creep onto his lips. Shaking his head he looked back to Arthur, “Then go on. You’ve got a job to do.” Arthur nodded, turning back to the hallway, but once again, Jason’s voice stopped him, “And Arthur. I mean it. If anyone where to find out about this, she could be exiled.” he paused looking back to his girlfriend who had begin to clear up the weapons on the floor, “Or worse…”

The knight gave him a tight lipped smile, “Trust me. I’m not one to talk my Lord.” With that, he continued down the hallway, leaving Jason and Jackie alone once again.

“You know, I’ve seen him sneaking around with Malvin occasionally. Think that’s what he means?”

Jason’s shook his head, pressing a kiss to her lips, “That is none of our business, love. Now let’s go. Before you get in even more trouble.”

She smirked before slapping his thigh. She took off down the hallway yelling, “Race ya Sir Chausses!!”

Laughing, he took off after her, “Hey! Not fair!”

Hi I was wondering what was Dick like in school throughout the ages? Was he bullied/not bullied? Did he go to public or private school?

Star Spangled Comics # 80

As far as I understand the US school system, Dick has attended public shool. With few exceptions, he's been depicted as pretty popular and not bullied. He was nominated to be Junior Class Presidency once, but his work as Robin got in the way. In an earlier story, he was the announcer for the school radio, played music and interviewed other kids.

There was one guy in a story in Batman vol 1 # 192 that started picking on him, but Dick won him over by the end of the story. And in Detective Comics # 393, another guy that had given Dick a hard time turned up. (Of course, it had probably a lot to do with that Dick busted him for rifling lockers.)

However, in a flashback in the The Untold Legend of the Batman # 2, from 1980, he suddenly seemed to be regularly bullied in school for being a rich kid. I can't remember if any later comics follow up on that – when the comic book was published, Dick was already at university so it would only come up in flashbacks.

The school names I know of from different stories are Bristol Middle School (Robin Year One) and Gotham High School (comics over several decades).

The one exception where he went to (as I understand it?) a private school, where he also was bullied, was in the short story "Clay". It's a great little piece, so it's too bad the detail with his school (Goodwin Academy) makes it incompatible with canon.

Hmm... Unless you say that Dick managed to convince Bruce to be transferred to public school after a short time.

TOO MANY HUSBANDS

April 21, 1947

The Gulf Screen Guild Theater present Wesley Ruggles’ Too Many Husbands, which was a 1940 Columbia Pictures release.

Synopsis ~ Vicky Lowndes (Lucille Ball) loses her first husband, Bill Cardew (Bob Hope), in a boating accident in which he is presumed drowned. The lonely widow is comforted by Bill's best friend and publishing business partner Henry Lowndes (Frank Sinatra). Six months later, she marries him. Six months after that, Bill shows up, after having been stranded on a uninhabited island and then rescued. Vicky has a tough choice to make.

The Screen Guild Theater (aka The Screen Guild Players), was one of the most popular drama anthology series during the Golden Age of Radio. At this point it is being sponsored by Gulf Oil. From its first broadcast in 1939, up to its farewell in 1952, it showcased radio adaptations of popular Hollywood films. Many Hollywood names became part of the show, including Bette Davis, Bing Crosby, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, and many more. The actors’ fees were all donated to the Motion Picture Relief Fund, an organization that provides aid to retired actors. Screen Guild Theater was heard on different radio networks, beginning with CBS from 1939 to 1948, NBC from 1948 to 1950, ABC from 1950 to 1951, and back to CBS until its last episode on June 29, 1952. Throughout its run, a total of 527 episodes were produced.

The radio show brought movies to radio for thirty minutes each Monday evening on CBS. The show aired for 242 programs beginning with “Yankee Doodle Dandy” starring James Cagney and ending with “My Reputation.” In between were all time classics such as “Casablanca” with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, “Sergeant York” with Gary Cooper and “Holiday Inn” with Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, and Dinah Shore.

The Screen Guild Players previously broadcast an adaptation of “Too Many Husbands” on March 8, 1942 starring Hedy Lamar, Bob Hope, and Bing Crosby. On September 4, 1944 yet another version was aired by the Players, starring Donna Reed, Frank Sinatra, and Bill Goodwin.

Too Many Husbands (1940) was produced and directed by Wesley Ruggles, with a screenplay by Claude Binyon. The film stars Jean Arthur, Fred MacMurray and Melvyn Douglas, and is based on the 1919 play Home and Beauty by W. Somerset Maugham, which was retitled Too Many Husbands when it came to New York. The story is a variation on the 1864 poem Enoch Arden by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. In the UK, the film was released as My Two Husbands. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Sound Recording. Too Many Husbands was remade as a musical, Three for the Show (1955), with Jack Lemmon and Betty Grable.

Two of the film’s background players, Bert Stevens and James Conaty, were later seen in as extras on “I Love Lucy.” Sam McDaniel (brother of Oscar-winner Hattie McDaniel of Gone With the Wind), plays a porter, just as he will do on “I Love Lucy,” becoming the first black actor to have lines on the series. Star Fred MacMurray will appear with Lucille Ball in “Lucy Hunts Uranium” in 1958.

RADIO CAST

Lucille Ball (Vickie) plays the role originated in the film by Jean Arthur. In April 1947, Ball was awaiting the release of two films: Lured and Her Husband’s Affairs.

Bob Hope (Bill) plays the role originated in the film by Fred MacMurray. Hope had just released the film My Favorite Brunette. Hope and Ball would do four films together, staring in 1949 with Sorrowful Jones.

Frank Sinatra (Henry) plays the role originated in the film by Melvyn Douglas. Sinatra had just released the film It Happened in Brooklyn on April 7, 1947. Primarily a singer, this is the only time he acts opposite Lucille Ball.

Truman Bradley (Announcer) was selected by Henry Ford to be the announcer for the “Ford Sunday Evening Hour”. With his distinctive, authoritative voice, he soon became a radio actor as well as a narrator in numerous movies. Bradley was the radio announcer for shows by Red Skelton, Burns and Allen, and Frank Sinatra.

Peter, the Butler is played by an uncredited performer.

‘TOO MANY’ TRIVIA!

The title is easily confused with the title of Lucille Ball’s radio series “My Favorite Husband,” and her films Too Many Girls, and Her Husband’s Affairs.

Lucille Ball also appeared with Screen Guild Players in “Tight Shoes” (April 12, 1942), “Nothing But the Truth” (May 3, 1943), and “A Night To Remember” (May 1, 1944).

From late 1942 to July 1947 Lady Esther Cosmetics sponsored the show which had been previously sponsored by Gulf Oil. It was first known as the “Lady Esther Presents the Screen Guild Players” and then became "The Lady Esther Screen Guild Theater.”

As is his penchant, Hope ad libs during the script. While hugging Vickie upon his return from the ‘dead’, he says “Let’s just stay like this till ‘Take it or Leave It’ comes on the air!” “Take It or Leave It” was a radio quiz show, which ran from April 1940 to July 1947 on CBS. It switched to NBC in 1947, and in September 1950, the name of the program was changed to “The $64 Question.” Hope often flubs his dialogue, but covers with comedy.

Bill (or maybe it is Bob ad libbing) mentions Dorothy Dix. Author Elizabeth Meriwether Gilmer (1861-1951) was widely known by the pen name Dorothy Dix. As the forerunner of today’s popular advice columnists, Dix was America’s highest paid and most widely read female journalist at the time of her death. Her advice on marriage was syndicated in newspapers around the world with an estimated audience of 60 million readers.

Bill (or maybe it is Bob ad libbing) wonders why Vickie married Henry: “Did you lose a question on “Truth or Consequences?” “Truth or Consequences” was a game show originally hosted on NBC radio by Ralph Edwards (1940–1957), although it also was later seen on television.

Bill (or maybe it is Bob ad libbing) says that the mattress on the bed that he and Henry have to share feels like it has been stuffed with Grape-Nuts. Grape-Nuts is a breakfast cereal developed in 1897 by C. W. Post. Post originally developed the product as a batter that came from the oven as a rigid sheet, which was then broken into pieces and run through a coffee grinder to produce the "nut"-sized kernels.

The first commercial break advertises Lady Esther’s four-purpose face cream. In these live commercials, the spokeswoman in known as Lady Esther, although she was not the actual Esther Cohen that the cosmetics line was named for.

Bob Hope ad-libs about his “Pepsodent contract”. Hope hosted “The Pepsodent Show” from September 1938 to June 1948. The program also featured Jerry Colonna along with Blanche Stewart and Elvia Allman as well as a continuously rotating supporting cast and musicians which included Desi Arnaz and his orchestra.

Henry tells Bill he should leave and join the Foreign Legion. Bill replies that he’ll meet him halfway by going to the library and reading Beau Geste. Beau Geste is an adventure novel by P. C. Wren, which details the adventures of three English brothers who enlist separately in the French Foreign Legion following the theft of a valuable jewel from the country house of a relative. Published in 1924, the novel has been adapted for the screen several times: 1926, 1939, and 1966.

Henry asks Bill (Bob) if he can spell “pithecanthropus" and defines it a the missing link between man and ape. Bob (Bill) replies “C.R.O.S.B.Y”! Bing Crosby was a singer that partnered with Hope on dozens of films, particularly their “road” films. In April 1947, Crosby had just appeared in a cameo role in Hope’s newest film, My Favorite Brunette. By the end of 1947, The Road to Rio will be released. Coincidentally, in the 1942 Screen Guild production, Crosby played Henry, the role taken here by Sinatra.

Just before Vickie breaks it to Henry that she’d rather be married to Bill, Henry (or maybe it is Crosby) sings “Time After Time” (1946), a romantic ballad by Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne, written for Sinatra to introduce in the 1947 film It Happened in Brooklyn, which had premiered two weeks earlier. In return, in the very next scene, Bob Hope warbles a few notes of “Thanks for the Memory”, his signature song.

At the end, Lucille Ball thanks the Motion Picture Relief Fund and it’s country house. In 1940, Jean Hersholt, then-president of the Motion Picture Relief Fund, found 48 acres of walnut and orange groves in the southwest end of the San Fernando Valley to build the Motion Picture Country House. The dedication was on September 27, 1942. The Motion Picture Hospital was dedicated on the grounds of the Country House in 1948.

The final commercial, once again delivered by ‘Lady Esther’ is for Lady Esther Bridal Pink Face Powder.

‘TOO MANY’ CLOSING CREDITS

The announcer (Truman Bradley) promotes next week’s program, Stork Bites Man, starring Jackie Cooper, Anita Louise, and Gus Schilling.

Stork Bites Man was a United Artists film that would not be released until June 1947. It also starred Cooper and Schilling.

Columbia Pictures is credited as the producer of The Guilt of Janet Ames, starring Rosalind Russell and Melvyn Douglas. Coincidentally, Douglas starred in the film version of Too Many Husbands.

The music was arranged and conducted by Wilbur Hatch, who also did the same for “My Favorite Husband” and “I Love Lucy.”

Lucille Ball appeared courtesy of Metro Goldwyn Mayer, producers of The Sea of Grass starring Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, and Robert Walker.

Bob Hope appears through the courtesy of Pepsodent, and can currently be seen in the Paramount picture, My Favorite Brunette.

LENNON JAMES HOLLIDAY OR “LJ” HAS NEVER LIVED A BORING DAY IN HER LIFE. sure, there’s absolutely been less interesting ones, but she’s always tried to find something exciting in each day. she spent a lot of time alone growing up, but LJ didn’t necessarily mind that. she always made her own fun whether she had friends in any given town or not.

her and her mom were constantly packing up and moving across the country due to her mom almost constantly taking up new jobs. as a kid, she thought it was fun and fascinating. what kid needs more than their mom? LJ was especially close with her mother and still is to this day, though they have started butting heads a little more as she’s grown and she’s grown more weary of all the moving. LJ has no idea who her father is and to be perfectly honest, her mom has no idea either. the way they both eventually came to see it was, they didn’t need a man in their life who wasn’t necessarily interested in being there. LJ jokes that they’re the less glamorous version of Donna and Sophie Sheridan from Mamma Mia.

holly raised LJ to unapologetically be herself no matter where they were or who she was friends with at the time. LJ, of course lives by those words to this day and is continually herself and very politically outspoken. as a kid, she struggled with both not knowing her father and constantly being the new kid at school. but as she got older, LJ adapted and sort of learned not to make too strong of connections because before she knew it her mom would be offered another interim teaching job. holly, while a loving mother, really allowed her daughter a lot of freedom which in addition to all the moving has led to LJ being extremely independent. just because she tries not to get close to people doesn’t mean she isn’t fascinated by them. she’s interested in all types of people and their stories just as long as they don’t start asking questions about her.

LJ went by Lennon up until she started middle school. middle school, of course, is where most everyone’s angst starts to flare up. she figured LJ would make her seem cooler and more mysterious from town to town rather than explaining her amalgamated name of john lennon and etta james.

in an ever changing upbringing, one thing that stayed consisted was LJ’s love for music. it was one of the many things her and her mom bonded over and as she got older she eventually started to teach herself music. she can play bass, guitar, and piano, but LJ’s real love is drumming. most recently, holly and LJ were settled in seattle where LJ joined an all girl punk band.

by far, seattle was her favorite place. she loved the people there, she loved the weather, and she actually made some friends. LJ was actually convinced she was going to graduate from there until her mom dropped the bomb they were moving to some town in ohio where holly used to substitute teach every now and then. with the bad news, her mother promised this would be the last time and the position she was offered was permanent.

so now, with prom and graduation and all those milestones on the horizon LJ has had to leave behind a life she totally fell in love with. of course, she’ll make do, but that doesn’t mean she won’t be bitter about it.

2020 Reading Challenge - E-Book Edition!

According to Amazon, I have exactly 294 e-books currently sitting in my Kindle library.

Granted, some of these books have been read and are being saved for a second (or third, or fourth) re-read, but when it comes down to it, that number is around 40 books, give or take.

Which means I still have over 250 books that need to be read.

And it’s not like I haven’t tried! There are plenty of titles that, when opened up, will go to the last place I left off - that being chapter 5, or maybe chapter 10. But sometimes life gets in the way. Or a sudden interest in another author. Or a new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. But whatever the reason may be, it’s over 250 books that haven’t been read. Challenge accepted!

For 2020, I commit to not buying any new books to add to my Kindle library (checking out books from the library is ok, because you’ve gotta support your local library!), and instead focus on the books I already have. So no addition of 99 cent books, or Kindle Unlimited books, or books that are suddenly 75% off. Only the books that I currently have.

As the reading commences, and after the book is finished, I’ll update my list to indicate what has been completed, along with the date purchased, and a short review (or a reason I just couldn’t finish it at all).
