AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER ⇢ 1x01 | AANG
I don’t understand. Why are they here? After all this time, what could they possibly want? Him. He’s more than the last Airbender. Aren’t you? You are the Avatar.

So…Katara and Sokka canonically knew their grandfather?? I never caught this before 😭
I got back to my rewatch of atla and in S1 E5 (when Aang dresses up as “Bonzoo Pippenpadlopsicopolis II” in Omashu) Sokka says “great! Now you look just like my grandfather.”
Tumblr media
I’m sorry. GRANDFATHER?? Are we just gonna slide right past that??
As far as grandparents go, we only visually see and get interactions with their grandmother (or Gran Gran) Kanna. Then there’s Pakku who, as we learn later in the series, used to be engaged to Kanna. But Katara and Sokka don’t learn that information until later in the series, and even then it’s never implied that Pakku is Hakoda’s father.
Which begs the question, who is this grandfather that Sokka mentions in Omashu?? Is he still alive yet never shown in swt flashbacks? The fact that Sokka was the only “man” left behind in his tribe is a fairly large point in his charecter arc, so if their grandfather is still alive, has he been fighting the war with Hakoda this whole time? Or had he passed away fairly recently given Sokka’s ability to recall his image? And if he has passed, we can assume his death wasn’t related to the fire nation, or else Sokka and Katara would be unable to joke about him with such ease.
This is so interesting to me and I wish the concept was explored more in canon, but I also get that the series had a limited run time so the bits of Worldbuilding/character-building they could dive into were limited as well.

We’re staying with my mom for Christmas. I have a rabbit. My mom loves having a “grandbunny.”
Over time my mom has become more familiar with how I take care of my bunny and the things she likes, so for this visit, she set up a rabbit enclosure for her. The whole thing is lined with cardboard which my bun loves to tear apart. She threw in little rugs she can move around. Each corner of the makeshift pen is like an exhibit with enrichment zones.
My mom called it rabbit kindergarten!
I think another thing that makes me so happy about it is that she’ll also have a human grandchild here for Christmas, and set up a crib and space for them too. But she took the time to do this for me and my rabbit. What love!

So I don't make Avatar posts often (only made one beside this one, lol) but Gran Gran being like "you were meant to find the Avatar and help him save the world" to her teenage grandchildren actually makes a lot more sense when you realize Katara is the first waterbender born to the Southern Pole since Hama was taken, which was decades before her birth, and was a very powerful bender herself from the start even though she had trouble learning the right techniques.

ohhh! kanna and the Wolf sounds interesting!
The origins story of my version of a shifter/were/spirit wolf sokka: Kanna gets it on with the protector spirit guarding the gate to the Southern spirit portal 😏
She tore and patched her boat a dozen times. She shed her cherished parka and mukluks, sold them for fabrics in muted greens that were more comfortable for the climate, then sold those again for boots and a coat that were far inferior in her opinion. She was happy that Kyoshi Island at least had a more sensible taste in colors.
More than once she considered selling her betrothal necklace. The stone was unique to her home alone, and certainly worth more than almost anything else she had brought with her. At times she found herself idly tracing the patterns of the waves Pakku had painstakingly carved out of it for her, his promise to carry her through their life together as swift and strong as the ocean currents.
Pakku, damn him, he never should have—
She loved him. He had been her best friend since they were old enough to throw snow at each other. It didn't matter that he was a bender, she always won, even though he insisted he let her. She always won.
Everything about their betrothal felt wrong. When he fastened the necklace around her throat it felt wrong. When he took her hand and squeezed it in his, promising his devotion, it felt wrong. When he pulled her under the shadow of the bridge, cupped her wind-rosy cheeks in his hands, and pressed his parted mouth against hers, it felt—
She loved him, but not like he loved her.
Kanna huffed, shoved the necklace deep into her bag, and pulled the drawstring closed. She didn't want his devotion, but neither did she want to forget.

Atla LA live commenting:
Ep 1:
Disclaimer: this is merely my personal view on the first watch of this show. Perhaps you had a better or worse experience.
.
.
It's not the worst I've seen but it feels incredibly rushed. They're spewing out all the info at you without giving time to allow the watcher to take it in.
Though I loved the extra time given to see the first attack of the Fire Nation against the Southern Air Temple.
Some of the actors are better than others and it's unfortunately obvious. Though everything seems incredibly cheesy. Which I can mostly ignore since it's a live action from a cartoon.
.
I adore the name of the Southern Water Tribe Village. Wolf Cove :)
.
I'm incredibly sad that Sokka didn't put on his war paint and helmet before approaching Zuko :(
They're fight seen is way more dramatic than the cartoon lmao
.
I notice that Aang already has some hair growing in as he's being taken to Zuko's ship. Nice touch. I like that detail.
Kinda stinks they didn't take the time to check out the old war ship
Sokka: "let's go save the weird kid"
.
GASP, Uncle Iroh and Aang talk in the jail cells!!!! :D.
Aang: "Is that what you believe?"
Iroh: *ah shi- I'm blabbering too much* oh hey, fam, gotta go- I'll send you some tea
.
The Force is strong with Aang. That jail key scene is air fire.
.
AANG IN ZUKOS ROOM. HEY STOP READING HIS DIARY PUNK
He took the staff in Zuko's room, instead of already having one. I'm okay with this difference actually. I like that, it's funny.
Zuko's hinted at obsession with Airbender artifacts is gonna help the Airbender. Gotta love it.
.
Aang escape
Zuko angy o.O
BUT YEAH GO KATARRA!
But are we gonna see some Avatar State?? ...Nope, guess not.
.
The way that they show that nature has been taking over the S Air Temple over the course of 100 years is making me very happy. That's a great addition.
.
OH NO, ARE WE GONNA SEE THE REMAINS OF GYATSO AND THE KIDS OH NO
Oh geez, there he is oh geez. Ouch ouch ouch
THE FLASHBACK IT HURTS
Oh here we go :/. Avatar State time
"you will always be my friend." Dang. New phrase to torture myself over.
The hug 😭
.
Is he gonna keep Gyatso's necklace?
.
Ending with some deep truths and Zuko slightly going nuts. Good 1st EP end, ngl.
.
OH YEAH THE MUSIC
.
.
Despite some things that I wish could have been done a little better.... I'm truly enjoying it.

Sokka: So....I think I'll call you Pop Pop from now on.
Pakku: Try it and see what happens.
Sokka: Fine then I'll tell Gran Gran and my sister.
Pakku: Tell them what exactly?
Sokka: That I'm just trying be accepting and treat you like family and in return, you're just being mean to me.
Pakku: You wouldn't.
Sokka: Try me.
Pakku: ....Hello, grandson. Its me, Pop Pop.
Sokka: Terrific.

ATLA Live Action Epidode 1 review/analysis
⚠️SPOILERS⚠️
I thought the first episode of ATLA was really good. I love the scenery and the bending CGI
The writers included details that were not in the cartoon
First off. The very first scene included an Earthbender stealing a scroll from the Fire Nation. We have no idea who this guy is but this person is most likely the reason the Earth Kingdom and the Water Tribes were able to be prepared for attack.
Second is the scene of the Big Comet Festival. The day Fire Lord Sozin chose to start the war because firebending are the strongest. This particular scene included detail about what Aang’s life was like before he was frozen in an ice burg for 100 years. It included Aang’s bond with Monk Gyatso, and the origin of how Aang received his tattoos.
Next we cut off to when we meet Katata and Sokka. Katara is secretly bending inside the Fire Nation ship while Sokka is training his troops. They meet Aang the same way they do in the cartoon (Katara is just not as upset) One detail they included was that Gran Gran knew that he was an Airbender and the Avatar
The scene where the Fire Nation come and take Aang is very similar to the cartoon, but this time Sokka was ready and willing to save Aang.
The scene where Aang finds out what exactly happened to his people was very similar except he already knew they were wiped out of existence compared to the cartoon.
Overall a good episode. I do like that Sokka is a mixture of both funny and serious for the more mature vibe the show is giving off.

do you have any azutara headcanon ? it's kinda hard to find azutara content after I read all your fanfics.😅
You have no idea you reading all of my fics made me, really needed that today!
Haven't been feeling very creative lately, but I'll try and come up with a few:
When Katara finds out she's pregnant and Kanna tells her that it's a gift from the spirits, she is worried that Azula won't believe her so she keeps it a secret for a few days while she tries to find accounts of it to show her, but Sokka lets it slip to Azula before she can and Azula runs to find her so that she can hug her
For their second child, Katara insists that it's Azula's turn to name them but she struggles to find anyone who she would want to name them after in her family so she suggests Kanna because Gran Gran was the first one to really accept her into the Water Tribe
Azula was terrified to come out as gay but it goes well with everyone and she realises that there was one person who didn't know and was the reason she was scared. She visits Ozai for the first time to tell him that she's getting married to a woman and she never sees him again
Sorry if these aren't great, but hope you enjoy :)

Elimination Round: Uncle Iroh Ships
Beloved Uncle Iroh is an incorrigible flirt and a lady's man in the show, but fandom has some more flexible ideas when it comes to Iroh's love life. But can anything really measure up to his true love of tea? (Yes I had to include that option, it was submitted three separate times.)
