Peter Quill giving Rocket his Zune at the end is symbolic of him letting go of his past so he can actually heal.  Music to him was his tie to his mom, and later Yondu as well, it wasn’t just a thing he was possessive of because he likes music, it’s because he refuses to let go.  His drastic love of nostalgic things to him shows he covets the past.
When Rocket is so close to death, and being confronted with the risk of more loss it gives Peter a much needed reality check that those in his life still living need him more than those who are dead.  This paired with parting ways with Gamora as friends inspired him to go finally reach out to his grandfather.

I just want ya all to know that during the scene where Rocket’s stripping down to sleep on his door-bed, and gets bum-rushed by Adam, we see him go through two walls and then over Star-Lord’s bed. This solidifies canon that Rocket and Peter’s rooms/apartments are next door to each other and they are best friends and also neighbors.

What GOTG Vol 3 reveals about MCU Rocket that we didn't already know
He is depressed and he knows he has 'emotionalistic issues' that prevents him from being able to help Star-Lord
Regardless he is worried about Peter.
After 7 years of friendship, Star-Lord keeps calling him a raccoon even though he knows Rocket hates it. (12 years total, -5 of the blip)
He did modifications for Nebula including creating her new versatile cybernetic prosthetic arm, and likely work on her facial implants
His wasn't built for anything other than to be learned from for science never being intended for any greater purpose
Rocket had a kill switch installed in him during his creation to protect his creators research
He can drink from a straw?
He eats grilled orloni meat
His first word was 'Hurts!' said while trembling
He was fed a false narrative he'd have a life worth his torture and obedience and that his docile nature was desirable and he was full of hope for it
He loved the other experiments he was caged with wholeheartedly and without a shred of callousness
He writes with his right hand (and in a language that goes right to left?)
He wanted to fly, this is something that is pure to him and him alone. The sky called him on a personal level.
He never intended to become violent. This happened after he got to his breaking point in losing his friend Lylla which immediate pushed him into his violent nature resulting in his first assaults and murders
Rocket's creation was physically painful and he was operated on while conscious and likely without anesthesia. Nebula says it was worse than what Thanos did to him and while we don't see the 'footage' it appears to be hard to watch from the characters who view it
Rocket's nature to steal was something he started doing out of impulse
Rocket is incredibly smart beyond what most people assumed, while some of his knowledge was rote memorization he also has a unique capability of inventiveness that was accidental, making him one of the most advanced intelligent characters in the MCU
Rocket use to not speak very well, he's add s's to the ends of words or just pair one or two words together 'What sounds?', 'We like it?'
Rocket escaped because if he didn't they were going to remove his brain (for science!)
The raccoons that Rocket was among came from North America, Earth which makes him Terran
Rocket wasn't introduced to music from Peter. He liked it since he was little (which was likely why he use to hum to himself whenever he worked at putting things together in vol 1 and listened to music while he worked in vol 2)
Rocket does sing and know words to songs (we saw a glimpse of it in the Southern Nights scene in vol 2 but we see more of it solidifying he does it often)
Rocket has his own apartment, he steals Peter's zune so frequently he even has his own dock for it (and also seems to take care of it when it's in his possession)
Rockets apartment is literally right next to Peter's
Rocket's bed is just a damaged door and a thin blanket, confirmed by Gunn that it is because sleeping on metal is what he was accustomed to
Rocket has a plant in his apartment; not important but he's a plant dad to more than just Groot
Rocket is a dancer (at least at the end of the movie)
He immediately appears to panic hearing the voice of his creator showing he has some ptsd from it (very valid)
He didn't deny being a Raccoon out of self denial or wanting to be seen for 'what' he is now, it was just a misunderstanding that he thought it was akin to a slur or something because of how he was introduced to the word (as an insult) and he embraces the name after realizing it for himself now no longer wondering if he's a rabbit or a Build-a-Bear.
Rocket was able to escape when he was basically, mentally a teenager
Rockets body was covered in braces while his body covered from the operations he underwent on his hands, legs and chest and didn't get clothes until after he escaped
Rocket has his subject number tattooed on his chest
Rocket is multi-lingual in at least English and whatever language the Star Children speak Orbose and this may likely not be just due to a translator implant like most cosmic marvel characters
Rocket has been carrying a physical reminder of his failure to his friends his entire life (the key to the cages of the lab he created from scraps he stole over his time there)
He never elaborates on his past to his friends about his origins. 'He won't talk about it'.
End of movie we see that Rocket likes discussing music (and confirms thinking Brittany Spears and Korn are good favorites)

When Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 came out James Gunn posted images each of the Guardians and when he posted Rocket's he said pink was his favorite color [×]
I accepted that as fact because I (the mun) also like pink and have always used a lot of it in design, and if James Gunn stated this it must be true but now thinking about it, I am honestly not so sure this wasn't just a joke.
"It BLUE!"
Maybe Rocket's favorite color is blue since that seems to be what he chooses to wear most.
This line seems so insignificant but he sounds excited to point it out. He knows this color, what it is. There it is. All the blue. It's beautiful.
It was the color of the sky.
Maybe it's his comfort color.
Also there is a good chance Rocket experiences some form of mild color-blindness so he may not see other colors perfectly.
If is favorite color was pink if have hoped we saw that he acknowledged the color even existed, but there isn't. That doesn't mean he can't like it or have it as his favorite but we can't ignore that even if James Gunn was serious about Rocket liking pink best, we can definitely see he loves blue too.
Yondu was blue, Nebula is blue, even if it may not be his favorite... Rocket associates good things with this color.

Just a few things I loved in GOTG3
The way Gamora and Nebula grunt at eachother as a greeting  The way Groot, Mantis and Peter all ask “Did that look cool?”  Mantis saying she wont use her powers to manipulate the feelings of friends but doesn’t think twice to make Drax forget she admitted she thinks he’s stupid. Gamora holding people hostage is her thing Nebula enjoying a soda pop (this just seemed so pure)
The way Batch 89 does not shame each other at any moment and just have nothing but love for each other
Adam’s love for Blurp
Drax’s self proclamation of being Peter’s #1 Best Friend and no one confirming or denying it each time
The badass fight scene with the Hellspawn that just made everyone look so cool and working together while also showcasing each character's unique fighting style
Groot pulling a ton of guns out of himself and going berserker
Kaiju Groot
Counter Earth being stuck in the 1980s
Just every dang line out of Baby Rocket, all the little grammatical errors and how sweet and hopeful he was
Peter the overshare-er
Nebs
Groot being concerned over all the Guardians, worried about Peter, checking on and comforting Drax, Watching over Rocket
The way Peter’s voice squeaks when Nebula tells him she didn’t tell him he was in contact with Gamora because she didn’t want him to get all freaked out
Drax getting peer pressured by kids to finally dance
Peter helping Rocket save a zoo’s worth of animals just because it was important to Rocket
“The Creation of Adam”

Something that occurs to me is during GOTG Vol 3, Rocket is likely close to the end of his lifespan as it is.  While it can be argued that he may have an extended lifespan due to space technology, space medicine being better, his enhancements ect, we can see that he’s emotionally burned out, he’s shown some age in the wiriness his fur has been getting, some more white hair around his muzzle, looking more worse for wear and ragged.  He’s been with the Guardians for 12 years now (minus 5 years of the blip), that’s pretty old for a raccoon, and we don’t know how old he is during the first movie, old enough to commit lots of crime and escape lots of prisons, at least, and domestic Raccoons usually don’t live much longer than 20 years-- so we can only guess what this means for him; or if it’s relevant because again, we don’t know his age.
At the beginning of the movie you feel his depression, feel he’s not satisfied with how things are, the way he sings, what words he emphasizes from the lyrics, the way he interacts with others.  He’s just there.  His friends and duties are a distraction to him and the only thing likely holding him together at this point, because even with everything he thought he might want, he’s still depressed.  When he nearly passes on, he’s ready.  He wants to be with his friends, he doesn’t think he has anything holding him back-- but when he does come back, he realizes his friends really do genuinely care about him.  They pulled through in what must have felt like a hopeless situation, and there they are, holding him, there as the family he always needed, giving him all the strength he needed to face his own demons.
EDIT: so maybe there is some backtracking due on this, according to some post I saw Rocket was apparently in his 20s in vol 1 already, so that'd put him in his 30s for vol 3. We still don't know how long he's supposed to live but we can say it doesn't seem to be in line with average raccoons.

/// Just thinking about how canon it is that Rocket gets belittled for being a raccoon so often and how it never lets up.
Vol 1: "I'm not about to be brought down by a tree and a talking raccoon" "What's a raccoon?" "It's what you are, stupid" "vermin" "rodent" "Hamster" "Pet" "freaky little beast" Vol 2: "Triangle faced monkey" "Rat" "Fox" "woodland critter" "Stupid raccoon" "Trash-Panda"
Vol 3: "Squirrel" "Badger" "Hedgehog" "freakish thing" "abomination" "monster" "Grimy raccoon hands"
Like fuck man, how is he supposed to get a better self esteem when even his own friends make fun of him. ///

End Credit scene in GOTG Holiday Special; I didn't realize this was Rocket's apartment til you mentioned it. The table chair position and the doorway are all in the right locations in comparison with the other image. We catch a blurry glimpse of his workbench in Vol 3 when he's pocketing the key, along with another when he gets bumrushed by Adam, so I had been piecing together the layout a bit for RPs.

/// One thing I didn’t like about GOTG3 is the team breaking apart.  Like I know the reasons, all of them, but it had to be really hard for Rocket to let go of his friends (family) after all that.  I wish they at least had a few more adventures together first, like a time skip to make it feel like there was more closure, or at least have them come back? ///

Pertaining to the scene Rocket escapes the Lab, we see that he has some metal parts on him that we don’t see later.  The implants at his jaw, I can’t say why we don’t see them later, but I discussed the ones on his hand and chest and we have theorized they act like braces, to force his body to heal and form a certain way after surgeries/modifications or to force his stance.  He was likely able to remove them himself later once it was safe to do so.
