Rocket sometimes wondered, how jaded he really had become, and if there was any recovery for it, so hearing Steve say he'd become less selfish over time, he nodded. He was aware that he wasn't just battling with things about his self image, but more internal emotions pertaining to how his value as a person was probably arbitrary on his ability to task, whether it was fixing, inventing, fighting, planning... He was afraid to find out how much he mattered beyond that... but not with Steve. He not only always validated Rocket as a person, but somehow saw the good in him that even he couldn't see.
"No offence, but I think that's partially your fault," he said, trying to lighten the mood. He was still trying to dry off his eyes, not wanting to break down anymore than he had, he had as much anxiety about showing his emotions openly as he had about the topics that gave him anxiety in the first place, not that (he'd ever admit he even had anxiety.)
"You been kinda a good influence, I think," Rocket said softly, clarifying what he meant about what Steve was at fault for.
A lot of times if he found himself feeling emotional, he found himself reeling in memories of his past, being mocked for crying or made to feel stupid. It made him guarded even with people he wanted to trust, even people he logically knew he SHOULD trust.
"I guess I never really thought about it that way," he admitted, his tone genuine. "I've always been good at hiding… stuff." He paused, shifting under the pat on the back, he couldn't . It was rare for anyone to see past his tough exterior, let alone someone as sharp as Steve.
"But... thanks Steve, you're a good friend. I just want you to know I appreciate it..."
Tumblr media
"Well I don't know. I'd argue you still do good now. I'd say you've gotten a whole lot less selfish over the years minus trying to collect Bucky's arm. I kid about that but seriously. You've been doing a lot of good lately and I know that feels like it always gives you the short end of the stick. "
Tumblr media
"I know I felt that way when I lost Bucky. When I had to crash the plane and everything I knew was gone when I woke up. I know it feels dismal sometimes but there is always hope." He patted Rocket's back and shook his head. "Don't apologize for emotions. We all have them. It's okay to express yourself Rocket. I know that I do...I've learned holing things inside just lets you explode later..."

"Well... it's true your tech seems grossly underdeveloped, but from the sounds of it you're starting to catch up pretty good... but back on Earth when they contacted me to help with your plans with the whole time heist, that was a stroke of genius, I didn't even know that could be done... so I dunno... I think you can handle whatever gets thrown your way."
Rocket's gruff bravado had slipped for a moment there, letting it show he really did respect Scott, even in front of his team. Rocket didn't really talk much about the whole time machine much around his friends because he really didn't want to show how bad he wanted to get them all back. Showing any sort of vulnerability wasn't really his style at the best of times, so he did avoid eye contact as he admitted he thought Scott could adapt to space-tech better than most Earthers.
Peter gave Scott a hearty slap on the arm. "You'll be fine, dude. I learned this shit when I was eight. It ain't that hard."
Kraglin smirked knowingly, surely having a plethora of stories that would contrast that claim but he kept his mouth shut. He wasn't one for stirring the metaphorical pot too much.
"And if anything gives you trouble, you got Rocket, and anyone of the Guardians to help out... besides maybe Drax," Peter added, adding the last part in a slightly lower voice. Drax was not paying especially close attention so he didn't overhear it. "Or ... Groot since you probably can't understand him."
"I am Groot..." Groot said in a lecturing tone.
"Yeah I know he just got here, that's not the point."
Groot just let out an annoyed grunt but it was clear he felt left out.
"Point being, we're a team, and we look out for each other and that includes our friends."
Tumblr media
Scott shrugged and bobbed his head in reluctant agreement. “Honestly with the tech you guys have, we might as well be using floppy disks and computers that take up whole rooms that take an hour to spit out one piece of paper. I feel like we’re that far behind…”
He thought about all the fancy tech and science back home. All of Tony’s work and everything Pym Tech could offer. Even his own suit, he once thought was the pinnacle of science and technology. Okay to be fair, he still thought his suit and the Pym Particles were. To Scott, they would always be hard to beat. But with everything he’d seen so far on this space heist adventure and everything he was about to do, he could help but feel like Earth tech was like the kid sibling with little legs trying to run after the big siblings. “…now that I know what else is out there.”

"What? You sure did your research," Rocket teased in a semi sarcastic tone. "Actually some of the food does come in pouches, but they're more like mush than liquid. No pills though... but it wouldn't shock me either if that was a thing for some planet's upper-crust. With our line of work sittin' down and prepping a real meal is kinda a luxury, so we gotta keep nourishment on the quick n' easy... but we keep regular snacks and food too, and don't worry I know what kinda stuff you humies like. You in the mood for mush or crunch?"
Probably about the weirdest way he could have asked what Spider-Man wanted for sustenance, but at this point it was more about recharging their energy than anything. It only made sense to take the time to grab a bite while they could breathe a bit.
Noir doesn’t relax much until Rocket had the ship out and zipping through the cosmos. The raccoon’s obvious ease and the singular view through the windshield was what it took to get the detective to start releasing some tension.
So far, so good. It just remained to be seen if Rocket’s ploy would play out as he predicted or not…
Noir tilts his head curiously when Rocket mentions getting a meal, little guy was actually hungry at a time like this?
…..when was the last time Noir had even last eaten, actually…..?
Tumblr media
“Meal break? Do you actually have real food out here in space or is it all in pill form? Or little liquid pouches?”
He asks half seriously, turning to look down at his companion as he did so.

/// I headcanon Rocket typically wouldn't eat out of the trash unless he was literally starving and stealing good food just wasn't an option (just like any person would, you know, for survival) but he gets close sometimes with what he's willing to eat, such as Taco Bell, McDonalds, or garbage pizza but he wouldn't eat a White Castle burger. ///

He leans back casually, crossing his arms over his chest, ear twitching slightly as he thinks about what Steve is saying. "I guess I get it. We're both about proving ourselves, even if our paths are different. I proved to myself that I could be more than just some lab rat or a thug for hire. Now I'm part of something bigger, and it's got it's merit. I just don't want to sit here pretending like I'm some altruistic saint or anything. I'll do what feels right, and sometimes, that's just about what feels right to me. Y'know I use to be good too and you know what that got me? A fricken death sentence. I learned early on that good people always get screwed... and yet..."
Rocket let out another sigh as if letting go any anger that might have been bubbling up as he thought about his ridged past.
Tumblr media
"I miss... I miss that ignorance... the optimism... just thinking being good was enough. No matter what I looked like, or what they did to me... but there was nothing."
His shoulders slumped, and he made sure he turned his face away from Steve's line of sight because he was definitely speaking too openly about his past. The ghosts of his past creeping up on him, he never could manage braving the topic for long. The hopeless feelings it'd cause to stir within him, he didn't know how to face them, how to deal with them, so he'd push them down and let them simmer.
"I'm sorry," he said, pressing one of his palms into both of his eyes, wiping away the tears forming before they had a chance to escape. "I really shouldn't be talkin' like that. The past is the past."
"I don't really see how we're different. I started out wanting to prove myself to a degree that was almost selfish because I wanted to prove to everyone that said I can't that I could. You're doing a lot of good with the Guardians. I wouldn't say that you're not good either. I used a lot of my strengths to prove my agenda."

"Relax Fox, I been on my best behavior! We're not looking for trouble, it just kinda finds us," he retorted with a smirk. "But that's how we roll, always jumping headfirst into danger. Keeps things interesting."
The way Groot always had warmed up to Fox so quickly didn't really surprise Rocket, but he knew he was at that age where he just liked everyone so long they weren't mean to him, but it made him happier than he could ever say.
Rocket's eyes softened slightly as he listened to Fox's words, his typically sharp gaze warming just a touch. "Yeah, maybe you're right," he replied, a hint of vulnerability creeping into his voice. "Groot's… he's something else, that's for sure. And yeah, he's definitely brought us all closer together. Sometimes it's hard to admit it, but I guess we're more close to whatever a family is."
Tumblr media
Rocket's ears perked up at Fox's teasing words, a smirk playing on his lips as he leaned in slightly closer to the screen, his eyes gleaming with mischief. "Oh, you think you've got me all figured out, huh?" he replied, his tone low and suggestive. "Well, I gotta admit, the thought of you in something… more casual does have its appeal." He trailed off, letting the implication hang in the air between them, his gaze lingering on Fox's face. "Well now you done it. I'm expecting a full fashion show when I get there, and I know you ain't gonna disappoint me."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Hey now, being a big softie has it's perks, you know," Fox responded with a chuckle, a playful glint in his eyes. "I'd say, and I quote, 'it wouldn't hurt you to at-least 'try' and stay out of trouble'." Fox added playfully as his hands became more animated as he spoke, emphasizing his point. "-But it seems to find you guys, from what you've told me, huh?" A loving-yet-playful smirk drew across his lips.
From what Fox knew, Rocket was doing his best to stay out of trouble. He couldn't be 'too' upset if he was. More or less, he'd be worried, knowing full well Rocket had the capabilities to handle his own. Rocket had this strange influence on him as well, encouraging Fox to be a bit more laid back, not as uptight as he typically could or would be. Maybe it was a certain dynamic Rocket had on him, being his partner and all. They both seemed to bring out different sides of each other.
"Yeah, there are plenty of books out there about it," Fox remarked thoughtfully. "Not that I've tried reading any," he admitted with a small chuckle, "I'm more of a 'learn as you go' kind of guy. Sometimes, you just have to dive in and do your best, hoping for the best outcome." To Fox, he knew Rocket was a great father figure to Groot, even if Rocket may have some 'doubt' about it himself. "I think in time you will see, you know?" Fox added as he rested his chin on the back of his paw, shooting Rocket a warm smile.
Tumblr media
Fox listened intently as Rocket's expression turned more serious, understanding the weight of his words. When Rocket glanced out the doorway to make sure Groot wasn't nearby, Fox remained silent. It was starting to become more obvious to Fox when Rocket would feel a bit more vulnerable, even through a screen.
Tumblr media
"I don't think Groot is an accident. I think he's a blessing, not only for you, but your team. From the incredible stories you all shared with me about 'the old Groot', he may be that bit of glue that you guys need to help hold you all together." Fox didn't want to sound like he was talking out of his ass here, and he took the way Rocket felt incredibly serious. "I guess," He paused for a moment, scratching the back of his neck thoughtfully. "-What i'm trying to say is, you may have given him something you always wanted... A family. People you know he can trust." He muttered, staring into the Procyon's eyes through the glimmering display in-front of him.
Fox grinned at Rocket's enthusiasm, he couldn't help it. There was something that just made the mercenaries heart melt when Rocket would flash him even the smallest smile.
"Oh Please, you just wanna see me out of my uniform?" Fox teased with a wink, tho his voice was quiet (and sultry) enough to make sure no one else could hear him. Not only on Rocket's end of the video-feed, but in the confines of his own space. "I think it could be quite fun, and besides, who doesn't like to have a nice set of clothes? Even if it's just something you can casually lounge around in or whatever?"

❄️ Blanket
There Was Only One Bed Variants
Tumblr media
The ship was cold, the central heat unit of the ship had kicked out, and quickly had caused the overall temperature of the ship to drop to uncomfortably low levels. The ship being large, it took it awhile to start feeling cold, and once they realized what was happening, Rocket made quick work of getting it repaired, giving everyone a little cruel reminder of the mortality they all faced in the voids of space. All the Guardians were wearing winter gear, as was Fox, who was staying as a guest at Rocket's own request.
Tumblr media
"Well... it's fixed, gonna be awhile before it's warm again," Rocket said returning to his room, seeing Fox huddling himself up on the thing he identified as a bed (it was technically just a bench) and shivering. There was no blanket on the bed, Rocket didn't often get cold enough to need one.
"Geez Fox, you... okay?" he asked, attentively but he didn't need an answer, his body language told him enough. He crawled up on the bed and stood on it near Fox, opening up an overhanging compartment and pulled out a ratty looking patchwork blanket, in shades of rust, tangerine and taupe. "I thought outta everyone, with as fluffy as you are you'd be fairing better than anyone but ... even Drax put a coat on," he said with a chuckle as he started wrapping Fox up around his thick quilted cover. "This oughtta help," he said, as he started to settle in next to him, helping 'heat' the inside of the blanket.

"I don't know much about what the serum you had did to you but... I trust all it did was give you the power to do things you wanted in your heart, that's where we're different. Anything I got out of what you call 'experiments' on me, frankly I use for myself... You're actually a good person, and me? Yeah, I dunno if I'd say 'good' exactly."
"Well most folks treat you differently. You know because the way you were created and all, but what matters isn't the experimentation. It doesn't matter that you were created but what you make out of yourself from it. I was made out of a serum, I was an experiment by a bunch of scientists and you know I used it to help people. You use it to save the Galaxy, that's pretty special."

"Aww, shit, Steve," the Guardian said in an affectionate tone, a small smile creeping on his face. He can't help but lean into that touch, bristling a bit in response. He's not really use to compliments, but coming from Steve, it means a lot to him. "Ya really know how to make a guy feel all warm and fuzzy inside." Rocket's ears flattened, in a sign of nervousness. He broke eye contact as he lifted his hand away from Steve's hair, avoiding direct communication, and sighs heavily. A brief moment of silence passes between them.
"Well you're one of the good ones, You don't gotta prove shit to nobody.," Rocket said in a murmur.
Being called 'special' Rocket just averted his eyes. He was probably blushing under all that fur, but who could tell?
He then looks up at Steve with sad eyes. "Y'know, Steve, my entire life has been about just me wanting to prove I'm... that I'm not... well... it's hard to explain but... I just want to feel accepted. So, telling you that me that - it means something," Rocket admits softly.
"I can't help the way I see myself but I see the way you see me. Or at least I'm listening. You know" he paused, looking at Rocket and ruffling his hair just as the other he did to him. "You're special to me."

"Eh I woulda had to help anyway, you know, at least with the inspection and whatever... but I know my first order of business is tomorrow morning we need to stop at the imported tech shop and get you at translator. All this 'space stuff' is gonna make a hell of a lot more sense to you if you can at least read the languages. I don't think your earth smart phones even have the basic language packs yet," Rocket replied. He did have faith that once Scott could read any of the installed languages off the cuff, he'd learn fast like he did with learning how to fire the guns and use the gravity boots and aero rigs. Rocket had been throwing all sorts of aptitude tests and Scott was surprisingly adaptive, and he took notice to that.
It also wasn't Scott he was hesitant about, it was Peter. He usually made Quill butter him up a bit before dumping work on him, but he was making a breach in their established etiquette, likely because Quill knew Rocket wouldn't leave his earth friend hanging.
Tumblr media
Huh. If Scott didn’t know better, there was some hesitation in Rocket’s answer. And with the way Quill wouldn’t make eye contact with Rocket, well, Scott could tell something was up.
“I don’t think your part will take very long,” he tried to assure his friend. Just in case. “I’m pretty good at tech, ya know building and wiring and programming. Definitely not your level, but still pretty damn good if I do say so myself. If you - or whoever - can get the parts for me,” he shrugged, “I can figure out the rest.”
