The (Disputable) Macdonald Hall Timeline:

since the dawn of time, fans of this niche canadian book series have been plagued by Gordon Korman’s insistence on making the boys time at school timeless, and by proxy, providing no clear passage of time. at all.

wikipedia helpfully provides the only indication of age is “too young to shave” but technically, this isn’t true. in that same book (This Can’t Be Happening) Boots indeed recalls “his Grade 8 field trip” which would imply they are in grade 9.

this is literally impossible.

i was personally driven insane by this notion.

so, i decided to make an obviously entirely factual timeline for all 7 books in the franchise (and graduation for fun because they don’t mention it in book 7, which means it’s not their last year yet) based on comments made throughout the story.

the START dates for the books are all absolutely accurate, but the length is a little fishy (pardon the pun) because unfortunately they almost never confirm how long it’s been since the start of the book by the end.

the holiday dates are based off of the modern toronto school calendar as well as me asking people i know who went to school in canada in the early 80s so while they may not be EXACT, they’re as close as we’re gonna get.

I have given what is possibly a concerning amount of thought to what I'd like to see from a (potential) TV adaptation of The Hypnotists. My wish list ranges from consequential characterization choices ("they should dial Tommy's sexist and entitled attitude toward Jax's powers way down") to much more superficial notions ("they should play this song during that montage"). But I think that the thing I'd want the most is more focus on the hypno trainees as an ensemble.

Let the kids besides Jax, Kira, and Wilson have more than one personality trait each! Give us an idea of what each of them is getting out of the program! Explore their relationships with each other, their mentor, and their own abilities! Spend more time with the characters who eventually get kicked out and mindwiped, so there are actual emotional consequences and stakes when that happens! Maybe even show what happens to the rest of the group when Sentia is shut down and Mako goes to Naughty Mind-Bender Jail!

(These are also, not coincidentally, some of the things I would love to see in fanfic.)

“Good question. So, I was gonna say Animorphs, but then I remember they did a low budget Nickelodeon show in the 90s. I would love to see that remade though.”

“Then there’s the entire My Teacher Is An Alien series by the legendary Bruce Coville that totally deserves its own TV show or Movie Quadrilogy. I would prefer it to be a TV show though. That way important character arcs wouldn’t have to be cut for time.”

chases go to joke line is "guys please remember i cant remember" when anyone asks him something and brendan laughs to tears every single time

bears real name is teddy and only aaron is allowed to call him that now (chase was too, before the fall) and he refuses to address that hes here when a teacher uses his real name when calling role

brendan is basically constantly filming chase because he thinks hes so funny anything he says could make for a good video script

shoshanna doesnt have a wood chipper but she does fantasize about it quite often, and gets embarrassed when someone (joel) mentions she imagined putting chase in feet first and says that the wood chipper is now only reserved for beta and gamma rats

chase is basically just brendans knight in shining armor since hes a clumsy mf, catching him when he trips or picks up things he drops and stuff like that. also very protective of him because brendan was the first person to become his friend post fall and the last person to give up on him during the one man band fiasco

chase is really bad about being oblivious to girls having crushes on him, he really doesnt even pay attention to the girls around him that arent his friends so he has no clue what someone having a crush on him might look like. aka really bad awareness of girls liking him

bear and aaron are the types of people to post a video of them beat a kid up on snapchat and then 20 mins later post a picture of them holding hands in a movie theater and sharing their slushies (aaron gets cherry and bear gets blue razzberry and they share)

shoshanna has bitch slapped chase at least once

bear has actually and naturally sharp teeth, like every one of his teeth are sharp, not just his canines. thats the second reason he earned his nickname, along with his original name being teddy and him wanting to keep it similar yet stronger, but also his physical prowess in his body type

bear tackles during football like a freight train and he probably tackled aaron so hard at practice aaron vomited in the grass

aaron uses hair gel. brendan and joel have like really soft hair but brendans is just messy. bear has really thick hair and chase doesnt really care what his hair does. shoshanna doesnt do much to hers but it always smells pretty nice
