My lord, what's your favorite ice cream flavour?
BACK WHEN I WAS CAPABLE OF HAVING IT?
I WAS ALWAYS FOND OF THE CORUSCANTI STREET SOLD KIND. IT WAS A SMALL FISH-SHAPED CAKE, CALLED A "BAKED SEA BREAM".
(THOUGH THERE WERE OTHER SHAPES, SUCH AS BAKED GOLDEN FISH OR BAKED C'ORON BEL-- THOUGH THERE WAS ALWAYS THAT ONE VENDOR WHO WANTED TO BE CUTE, AND DID BAKED OPEE SEA KILLER SHAPES).
AND IT WAS OFTEN FILLED WITH COCOA ICE CREAM.
I DO NOT TECHNICALLY HAVE A FAVORITE ICED CREAM, BUT I DO FONDLY REMEMBER THOSE FISH SHAPED CAKES.

This is one of the most delicious fish in Portugal and it’s called Dourada in Portuguese and Sea Bream in English. However, being a popular fish doesn’t mean everyone agrees on their name, so you might see it being called of Sea Golden Bream, Golden or even Golden Fish! Join us ride351.com

Happy birthday, Rengoku Kyojuro!
Hello friends,
Quick update on new work coming down the pike. Also, happy birthday to Rengoku Kyojuro! (May 10)
Make sure to open the rest of this post for a preview of the next part of my ongoing series, “The Hidden Ones.”
I’m going to stay quiet until June so I can finally finish writing “If There Was A Hole.” It’s going to be another ~10,000-word short story. It’ll probably go out starting June 5 on AO3 and get fully posted that week.
After that, it’ll be the third and final part of “The Hidden Ones,” and that will probably go out starting July 6. Subject to change, but I’m planning seven chapters and it’ll be a midsize story, around 20,000 words. I’m thinking chapters will get posted to AO3 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so the series will be completed on July 27.
Are you enjoying the Demon Slayer Swordsmiths’ Village anime? It renewed my love for the Kakushi, so keep reading for a preview of Chapter 3 of “Occupational Hazards,” the next part of my ongoing series, “The Hidden Ones.”
_____________________________
Being a Kakushi came with some unique occupational hazards. Physical. Mental. Emotional. If you weren’t ready to give it all at a moment’s notice, you weren’t fit to be a Kakushi.
Today, you were at profound risk for getting shat on.
“Welcome! Toka~i~!!” A single crow regaled you with greetings as you let yourself in through the front gate of the official Demon Slayer Corps Kasugai crow training facility.
The Demon Slayer Corps always used crows for communication. Trainable and intelligent, the dark birds also blended in well with the night sky, making them ideal for nighttime activities.
Today, you were serving as the personal escort for someone’s crow since he’d injured himself during a mission the previous evening. He was a solid, middle-aged fellow with polite manners and a soft spot in his heart for sweet red bean paste. His name was Kaname. And of course, he belonged to the Flame Hashira, Rengoku Kyojuro.
With a grim expression on your face, you recalled a scene from earlier that morning.
“I wouldn’t trust anyone but you, _____!” Rengoku handed you a square cushion. The crow was sprawled out on it on his back, obviously unable to stand up. He wiggled the tip of his wing at you feebly. Rengoku Shinjuro watched you from a distance with a bored look on his face, half a dried mackerel sticking out of the corner of his mouth. You waved halfheartedly. He didn’t acknowledge you.
“What happened to him?” You tried to maintain your best professional poker face as you took the cushion.
“He flew into an electrical pole!”
“Huh.” You reached down and stroked his smooth chest. The crow’s, that was. “That’s pretty unlucky.”
“Yes, I thought so, too! He’s a member of my family, so I wanted to make sure he is in good hands!” Rengoku leaned against the fence, grinning at you with his hands perched on his hips.
You stared at him, acutely aware that he’d put extra effort into his look today. His hair was swept off his shoulders and slicked into a ridiculous little poof on the back of his head. He wore a garish violet haori with a large golden sea bream dyed onto the front of it. He smelled like something imported.
Your eyebrows twitched, the whole spectacle adding up to something entirely weird. You glanced again at his father in the distance, still watching with an air of disinterest. He pushed the rest of the dried mackerel into his mouth and offered you a barely perceptible shrug. You shrugged back, willing him to come over and end your conversation.
He didn’t move a muscle.
“Uh. Nice haori, Rengoku-sama.”
He brightened instantly and you felt guilty for complimenting him because you really thought it was a weird-looking getup. But he’d specially requested you, so…
“Call me Kyojuro!”
NO
End flashback sequence.
You shook your head, sighing. You liked Rengoku better when he didn’t make such an obvious effort to impress.
Because he was impressive without any of that. As much as you wanted to ignore it, you couldn’t help but to be drawn to him. How could you not? You hung your head, carrying Kaname silently on his little soft cushion.
The head of the crow training and rehabilitation facility was named Taniguchi. She was quite short in stature and had an equally small and silent presence. Personally, you thought she would make an ideal reconnaissance Kakushi but she didn’t prefer to be around people that much. The crows seemed to like her, so that was all that mattered.
“Taniguchi-san…” whispered Kaname from his cushion. “Help meeee.”
You entered a small barn, glancing warily into the rafters. A hundred sets of glittering eyes stared down at you from the darkness. Your eyes redirected themselves for a moment to the floor. There was a lot of bird poo. You decided to wait by the door.
Taniguchi finally rounded the corner, adjusting a pair of spectacles on her face. Without seeming to notice you at all, she took Kaname from your hands and clicked her tongue at him.
“You’re fine, Kaname, you just bruised your legs.”
“I think I’m dying…” he croaked, his little chest heaving.
“You’re not dying, you’re just thirsty and have some bruises.”
“Give me some fine roasted tea.”
“We have water or water.”
You cleared your throat loudly. “You and the crows sure get on as well as ever, Taniguchi-san.”
She jumped as if she hadn’t noticed you were there.
“Tokai. What a pleasant surprise.”
You knew that Taniguchi didn’t regard a visit from anyone who wasn’t a crow as pleasant, so you guessed you were just a surprise.
“Sorry for just showing up. Kaname needed a lift.”
“Only the best, personal service for the Flame Hashira’s bird, yeah?” Taniguchi gave you a sharp look. You flinched, spotting a knowing gleam in her eye.
Since Taniguchi spent so much time with the crows, and since crows were a gossipy lot, she knew almost every single rumor that circulated around the Demon Slayer Corps before anyone else did. Not that she did very much with that knowledge, but if you happened to pay her a visit, chances were that she would tell you all the unpleasant things the crows thought about you. Last time, she’d told you that the crow belonging to a Demon Slayer named Murata always knew you because he recognized your eyebrows.
From then on, you never regarded your eyebrows in quite the same way. In fact, you never thought much about them before that moment, so your quality of life decreased for a while as you hyper-fixated on your eyebrows every time you got dressed.
You shook your head. It had taken half a year to stop thinking so much about your eyebrows. You weren’t interested in any more crow opinions.
“Please don’t tell me what the crows are saying about me these days, Taniguchi-san. I don’t wanna know.”
She just shrugged. “You’re not that interesting, so there’s nothing much to say. The Flame Hashira, on the other hand, always has rumors. Doesn’t he, Kaname?”
Kaname, still on his cushion, averted his face.
“I guess it was true that his Tsuguko ran away from him.” You recalled Ito and his misfortunes.
“I’ve heard that he’s courting a lover these days. No word yet on who it is, though. No one’s seen him with anyone, so maybe it’s just talk.”
Your throat tightened uncomfortably.
“Uh, yeah, I’m sure most of that kind of rumor isn’t true? He’s a Hashira. He doesn’t have the time.” You hid your fidgeting hands behind you as you followed Taniguchi into an office attached to the barn. As she rummaged around in a cabinet, she continued to talk, much to your chagrin.
“Those rumors are usually true… There isn’t much talk of love around the Demon Slayer Corps. When there is, it’s usually something awful. Like when Kocho Kanae-sama was killed.”
Kocho Kanae was a previous Hashira, though you never met her. She died very shortly after you became a Kakushi. There had been a rumor that one of the other Hashira had been in love with her.
“But was that even true?” you asked, watching Taniguchi attach the split to Kaname’s leg. “It’s not like there was any way to find out. And it was horrible. No one knew what to say.”
“Guess we will never know,” she hummed in reply. You shook your head again. Taniguchi had her own little world she lived in. Eager to leave, you focused your attention back onto Kaname.
“Kaname, if you need to go home before your legs are better, get Taniguchi-san to ask me to come get you.”
“Understood,” he whispered dramatically at you. Your eyebrows twitched. Suddenly self-conscious again, you jammed your headpiece down to hide them. You picked your way around some spots of bird poo on the ground and made your way out.
“You know what I think, Tokai?” Taniguchi called after you. You weren’t really sure if you cared about what she thought but you stopped anyway.
“I think that if the Flame Hashira is pursuing someone, maybe it’s one of us.”
You didn’t turn around.
“Even if he was, Taniguchi-san, it’s really not our business to pry,” you replied. Your chest grew hot and angry. For someone so antisocial, Taniguchi was annoyingly nosy. You returned to the car, not bothering to entertain her probing stares. You decided that if you got another chance to speak privately to Kaname, you would warn him against gossiping too much about his master.
You couldn’t get Rengoku out of your head.
That bright violet haori with the sea bream stitched on it was burned into your mind. He’d been trying to impress you. You! A whole Hashira, trying to impress you. You gripped the steering wheel so hard that you could feel your nails digging into your palms. Lost in your own inner turmoil, you barely noticed when a crow flew up and rapped sharply on the windscreen with its beak.
“Damn!” You cursed mostly out of surprise, beckoning the crow into the car with your arm. It perched on the seat next to you, looking up at you in silence for several seconds.
“Tokai _____!!” it finally announced.
“Uh. Yes?”
“You have a job. Kukuku.”
“Kuku… ku?”

Silhouette of Island and Crashing Waves (Cape Tsumeki, Shizuoka Pref., Japan shot on January 25, 2023)
The view of Tsumeki Island (爪木島) off the coast of Tsumekizaki  Beach makes for a nice subject with the morning sunrise creating wonderful golden light aided by low cloud cover over Sagami Bay in the far distance.
This shot is just one of the many beautiful views you can enjoy in the Tsumekizaki Natural Park located in the city boundaries of Shimoda in Shizuoka Prefecture.
If you are into fishing, there are several boats that you can charter to take you out to the eastern side of the island where you can go ashore and try your hand at catching medina, parrot fish, red sea bream, grunt, black snapper, etc., depending on the season.
Be sure to check the Pix4Japan blog for access info!

💍 for Connor and Tsubaki
where they get married
Assuming they don’t get married in the heat of battle, like that one scene from Pirates of the Caribbean 3 – they get married properly at a church/temple, probably sometime in the spring, since Tsubaki always wanted to get married under cherry blossoms.
The ceremony’s probably going to be a small thing and officiated by Connor’s aunt, or an actual priest.
what traditions they include (do they get married under a chuppah and crush a glass, garter toss, ‘something borrowed, something blue,’ etc. )
Aside from the bouquet and garter tosses, they take part in the San-San-Kudo, a ritual which is commonly part of Shinto weddings
What their wedding cake looks like?
A three-tiered cake with decorative branches of cherry blossoms made from buttercream frosting.
…. who smashes cake into whose face?
To the surprise of everyone, Tsubaki smashes the cake into Connor’s face.
Who proposed to who first?
Connor was the one who proposed to Tsubaki, it was right before the two of them had separate missions. Knowing Tsubaki and not wanting to make her uncomfortable, Connor made sure that his proposal was a private thing, just the two of them.
who walks down the aisle and who waits at the altar (or neither)
Tsubaki’s walked down the aisle by her grandfather. Per tradition, Connor waits at the altar and seeing Tsubaki in her dress takes his breath away.
what their wedding dresses / suits / other look like
Connor’s suit is black, with a dark green waistcoat, while Tsubaki wears a white dress which takes cues from a traditional bridal kimono.
What their vows are.
They're pretty traditional vows, but there's an added bit about always having each other's back in a fight.
who’s in the bridal parties/groomsmen /other
While Shanyin’s the best man, Laura shares her duties as Maid of Honor with Tsubaki’s sister Shion. Mostly because the Maid of Honor for a Huntsman Wedding probably has to do a pre-ceremony sweep for crashers, and Shion’s a civilian.
what their bridal party / groomsmen / other are wearing
The bridesmaids and groomsmen are allowed to wear their own suits and dresses. There wasn't a real unifying color scheme for them.
who gives speeches at the reception (bonus: what do they say? recount a sweet memory or two between them? tell an embarrassing story?)
At least three people give speeches, usually recounting sweet memories, with a few good-natured jabs about how long it took for Connor and Tsubaki to realize they liked each other.
who catches the bouquet(s)
It’s either Laura or Shion. Ouka managed to catch the garter.
what their wedding photos are like (are they sweet, with the couple holding hands or kissing or ~gazing into each others eyes~? are they silly, with a snapshot of the ‘cake-smash’ moment? or are they artistic, with one of them facing the sunset or holding their bouquets? )
There’s a combination of sweet and silly photos.
what sort of food they have at the reception
I'm not entirely sure about the menu, but I'm pretty sure the fish option is a salt-crusted sea bream, seeing as that's a traditional Japanese meal for good fortune
who cries first during the ceremony
Tsubaki cries right after kissing Connor, because that's the moment when she realizes it's all real
how wild their reception gets (who dances the best, who gets drunk first, etc. )
The reception starts pretty tame – but gets wild halfway through. No one gets really drunk, but a good chunk of the party are probably going to have a good buzz going.
Shanyin and Tsubaki's brother decide to settle who's the better dancer.
Connor's aunt Morgan starts teaching everyone drinking songs near the end of it.
What their rings are like
The two of them made each other’s rings. Connor’s ring for Tsubaki was a golden band with five pink tourmalines set to look like a five-petalled cherry blossom. Meanwhile, Tsubaki’s ring for Connor was a golden band with Celtic knotwork inlaid in silver.
what sort of favours they have ( heart shaped sparklers, mini champagne bottles, personalised candy etc. )
Probably something simple, mini champagne bottles, personalized candy, a few bottles of Dust for the huntsmen and huntresses in attendance.
where they go for their honeymoon
The two of them probably take a trip to Mistral
something memorable that happens during the party / ceremony ( do they run out of ice and someone goes to get it in full formal wear on foot, does anyone fall asleep in the middle of the party, etc. )
A few things happened, a group of mercenaries hired by Connor’s mom crashed the ceremony in a last-ditch effort to drag Connor away from being a Huntsman, who are then dealt with before the ceremony can get back on track.
During the reception, Shanyin challenges Tsubaki’s older brother Ouka to a dance-off, and Laura settles a bet with someone that she can in fact, shoot a bottle off someone’s head with just a garter.
what song their first dance is to
Merry-Go-Round of Life, it might be a bit on the nose, but it kind of feels right for them.

[Text:] So.. about that dinner. [Text:] When are you free?
There was no official menu to speak of, as the young heir trusted Jae-hyo to procure nothing but the finest ingredients- served in ways that enhanced their natural flavor and characteristics.
The spread was beautiful as always, hallmarks of Spring obvious in symbolism as well as literal decoration. Slender young asparagus stalks mimicked that of freshly cut bamboo beside two macedoine cuts of finely marbled red meat grilled to a rich golden brown- meant to look like natural rock formations. Even the glistening skin of red sea bream had been expertly rendered from it’s carcass to decorate equally thin strips of cheek flesh. Agar-agar had been employed into a captivating dessert speckled with artful lines of fruit compote, resembling a captured bubble of stream water containing the shadowy silhouettes of circling goldish.
Presentation played a factor as much as flavor and odor. Porcelain tea cups employed to house a rich umami-dense demi made from stewed kidneys and pan-seared spleen, steam building like puffs of cotton struggling to break free. The offerings serving as garnishes went down easy, too- crispy pieces of skin lightly fried to crackle pleasantly beneath his incisors like the sizzling rice in it's crystal clear pool of seafood fumet.
Blistered shishito peppers and scallions had speckled the thin sheets of fish served raw, like new growth peeking through barren earth to search out the warmth of a midday sun. His chilled cocktail pure and unclouded enough to resemble a gemstone as the firelight gleamed off of it’s surface.
"I can work with any change desired, there is no request I've taken that has managed to compromise the dishes at all."
Yoon is curious to see if he had guessed Rufus' tastes correctly, though any formal critiques would certainly be taken to heart- Assuming the President would allow him to serve again in the future.

Plan a Deep Sea Fishing Trip in Dubai
Deep sea fishing is perhaps the most popular open-air activity in Dubai. This method involves trolling and bottom fishing, usually 16-20 times, then 40 miles out to sea. On a deep sea fishing holiday in Dubai, you can catch giant barracuda, totoaba, queenfish, tuna, giant mackerel, and a variety of bottom fish.
Tumblr media
What Fish to Catch and When to Aim It
October to May is basically the best time for deep sea fishing and diving in Dubai. During this time, you may catch goldfish, queenfish, king bream, golden threadfin, and orange grouper. Hamour is usually active from January to April. During the colder months, mainly November to March, you can find cobia in these waters. Your chances of getting bluefin tuna and trevally are greatest in January, then again in April or May. You can catch yellowfin tuna from May to September. Then you can get pike, snapper, and catfish all year round. With the above points in mind, plan your deep sea fishing trip in Dubai to make sure you catch the species you want.
Fishing in Dubai Guide
You can try bottom fishing snapper, grouper, Norway bream, gilthead bream, and other bottom dwellers with a standard rod and reel or hand line. Some anglers combine fishing methods, depending on the species. The local baits of choice are usually small shrimp and squid.
Local anglers target large species such as kingfish, queenfish, cobia, and tuna when trolling. Fake lures can be used for this strategy. The numerous deep sea fishing charters in Dubai consolidate trolling and bottom fishing.

"I have other obligations in Japan”
There is a fascinating concept that seems to be rather uniquely Japanese in nature. It’s called “giri”, and I believe that it’s what Takemura-san is talking about when he mentions “obligations in Japan”. I’ve been digging into this over the last few days, here’s what I’m taking from that.
I am confident enough to share it, however, please take it with a grain of salt as it is a gaijin’s take on Japanese culture, and if someone with Japanese roots tells you that I’m wrong, please believe them and not me.
Giri is the virtue of the samurai!
The most succinct and complete information on this I found in Merryl Dean’s second edition of Japanese Legal System.
“These old tales of times when giri was from the heart and had no taint of resentment are modern Japan’s daydream of a golden age. In those days (…) there was no ‘unwillingness’ in giri.” (JLS, P11)
Giri is most clearly perceived in the relation between a retainer, their liege lord, and their comrades in arms.
Giri vs gimu vs ninjō
there is not even a clear definition for giri within the Japanese language, so it is impossible to translate. The concept, however, is clearly understood.
It is not to be confused with gimu, which may sound similar to Westerners, but is not:
Gimu exists towards your parents, but giri towards your in-laws and blood relatives starting at the second degree. (Fulfilment of intimate obligations to which one is born)
Giri exists towards everyone you have any kind of contractual / transactional relation with. That includes your liege lord or your grocer.
Ninjō: the opposite of giri: the human feeling of compassion.
you can have towards everyone. It mostly gets in the way of giri.
This is called “giri-ninjō,” which should be read as “the giri-ninjō conflict.” There is a wikipedia quote with an example below.
“A man must do 'giri’, they say, because, 'if he does not, people will call him "a person who does not know giri” and he will be shamed before the world.’“ (JLS, P11)
Giri within the circle of on: an obligation to return kindness
a balance between giving and receiving must be maintained.
the onus is not on the recipient! If Bob owes Alice giri and does not go out of his way to fulfil it, Bob will lose face and be shamed, and Alice will be fine.
In fact, Alice inquiring after Bob’s giri would shame him. It would also be seen as disgraceful for Alice, but the fault for this disgrace will fall upon Bob, as he should have prevented this by removing the need for her to inquire.
However, the situation is generally bad for everyone involved.
This is Bob’s fault, though.
Giri includes favours and gifts!
A return gift / favour needs to be an exact equivalent. Example (my understanding, might be inaccurate):
Alice does Bob a favour in the value of 10 rubber points.
Bob does a favour of 10 rubber points back: giri is balanced, all is well
Bob does a favour of 15 rubber points back: He has now placed giri upon Alice. This shames Bob.
"One of the most disparaging things one can say about a gift is that the giver has 'repaid a minnow with a sea bream (a large fish)’. So too in repaying giri.” (JLS, P12)
If giri can not be met within a reasonable amount of time, the amount of it will improve.
Giri will accumulate.
This is not seen as inherently shameful, because it is understood that it is the way of things (e.g. a student to their teacher, an Arasaka goon to the corporation.)
It is possible to become entangled in giri. In this case, your obligations will curtail your choices and leave you only one option.
This option absolutely includes suicide.
which is still perceived as a romantic / idealized way to “restore one’s honor”.
Japanese proverb: “A fair death honours a whole life”
Applied to Cyberpunk
This looks exactly like what Takemura has going on towards V (ships aside) - the reason why he makes demands of Hanako!
Hanako-sama - V is living proof of the terrible crime your brother committed! We can confirm every word she speaks if only you will help her with the Relic!
He sees no conflict in maintaining his giri towards Arasaka and his giri towards V, which is why he tells his boss that she has to make concessions.
In a Western understanding, Hanako could simply order him to do that.
However, given that there is a Lady/Retainer relationship between the two of them, each has an obligation towards the other to help them upholding their giri.
Any failure to do so will shame the party who fails to become proactive!
What does that mean?
Hanako has to make sure that Takemura will be able to keep his giri towards V, or she will be shamed, and he will not.
Takemura has to do everything within his power to allow Hanako-sama to fulfill her giri towards V. If his existence places her in a conflict of giri, it is his responsibility to remove this conflict of interest by committing seppuku. Not doing this will be shameful beyond measure.
Should Arasaka break their word in the Devil ending, they will choose to forego their giri. In my understanding, that will lead to the corporation being completely and utterly shunned in Japanese society, and no one will ever want to do business with them again, because they can not be trusted to hold up their end of the bargain.
That is absolutely independent of V. Arasaka failing to fulfil their giri towards Nibbles would have the same effect.
If giri can not be met within a reasonable amount of time, the amount of it will improve:
This absolutely applies to Takemura, who perceives Arasaka as having given him everything (see the rooftop conversation).
He can never fully pay this back, which is why he is A-OK with throwing his life away in the service of 'Saka
he perceives the value of his life as an appropriate compensation for what he owes Arasaka
Giri outside the circle of on: Most prominently includes revenge
keep one’s reputation “bright”
among other things, this is achieved by maintaining the etiquette of one’s 'proper station’
removing a slur or insult: either of those is perceived as a stain upon one’s honour and has to be removed
extreme a: vengeance / enact retribution
extreme b b: suicide
anything between those two is possible
Applied to Cyberpunk
To me, this looks exactly like what Takemura has going on towards Yorinobu.
I think this is also the reason why he does not commit suicide
he has another option left to balance his giri, and he explores this first.
can always commit seppuku later
Maintaining the etiquette of one’s 'proper station’:
You can observe that every time Takemura is with anyone Japanese who isn’t Oda. The moment he switches contexts, this becomes (painfully) obvious.
The two types of giri are perceived as one.
Aggression begins only outside the circle of giri:
As long as you are acting upon giri, you have not been aggressive, but merely reacted in an appropriate fashion.
Applied to Cyberpunk:
This makes me look at the Corpo War differently. What if Arasaka was “just” fulfilling giri? (I can absolutely see Saburo working very hard to make sure that the web of giri entangles him so completely that he sadly, regretfully, has no other choice than bombing the ever-living shit out of Militech.)
My understanding:
Giri might be compared to a debuff that has to be discharged.
You accumulate it through every social interaction outside your core family
this includes gifts and favous
if your debuff reaches too many stacks, you will be dishonoured and shamed beyond repair
you reduce stacks by reciprocating in an equal manner
If you apply stacks back, you will gain additional stacks.
Getting rid of those will be more difficult.
Ninjō
Wikipedia on this issue:
The classic example of ninjō is that of a samurai who falls in love with an unacceptable partner (perhaps somebody of low social class or somebody of an enemy clan). As a loyal member of his clan, he then becomes torn between the obligation to his feudal lord and his personal feelings, with the only possible resolution being shinjū or double love-suicide. This demonstrates how giri is superior to ninjō in the Japanese worldview since the latter could weaken an individual’s devotion to his duty
Is the ship doomed to sink?
No! I think it is on fire, but watch her go!
It only means that there are constraints that any writer will have to work around. For this, I should create an additional post, though

Aphrodite of the Sea
This aspect of hers deserves some more attention. As someone who was raised by the sea, grand-daughter of a sailor and one who fell for an ex-sailor, I'm terribly biased. Aphrodite's association with the sea is not ignored, and I see it come up often through aesthetics, but I've more rarely seen the cultic aspect being brought up. So here we are.
The birth of Aphrodite and the epithets Her birth is obviously a given when talking about Aphrodite's link to the sea. Hesiod, in his Theogony, informs us that she was born out of the white seafoam generated by Ouranos' mutilated testicles which were thrown in the sea and carried by the waves. From this birth, Aphrodite was given the epithet Anadyomene "Rising from the Sea". While this myth alone could be enough to explain the goddess' natural intimacy with the marine world, the other epithets she has give a glimpse of a deeper association. First, we can list the basics: Pontia "of the Deep Sea", Pelagia "of the Open Sea", Thalassai "of the Sea", Galenai "of the Calm Sea". More interesting are Euploia "of Smooth Sailing" and Limenia/Epilimenia "of the Harbor", because they explicitely refer to her impact on mortal's lives, and especially the lives of those for whom sailing is essential.
The goddess of seafarers More than the sea itself, Aphrodite's home is the harbor and the sea coast. In fact, her sanctuaries and temples were commonly built on the sea side, on the harbor or the beach (especially on island towns): in many cases, Aphrodite's cult was brought from the sea to foreign lands. Greek mariners took her with them where they sailed and as such, have brought her cult a bit everywhere around the Mediterranean, whether through trade or war.
As the patronness of ship's crews, mariners, ship owners, traders, fishermen, immigrants and seafaring tourists, it is natural to find her on the harbor when back on land, and especially under the epithet of Euploia. This was the case in Athens, of course, but also in Knidos, Olbia, Cilicia, Mylasa and Delos. In Corinth, Kechries and Aegina, it is the epithet Epilimenia that is prefered. Finally, other seaside temples and sanctuaries simply refered to her as Pontia. I simply wish to highlight, with this long list, that we are not dealing with an obscure aspect of Aphrodite. Her cult amongst seafarers is an important and widespread one. Her most important sanctuaries were in Cythera and Cyprus, as both location tie into the birth story as told by Hesiod. Cythera being where she first touched land, and Cyprus being her main cult site and permanent "residence". Cyprus is, in fact, covered by hundreds of sanctuaries dedicated to her. I could go on and on about the mythical associations between certain spots in Cyprus or even Rhodes, but this is not the focus for today.
Aphrodite protected sailors in many ways. Being both of the sea and the sky, she righteously has dominion over the winds necessary for sailing. Epigrams found in the Palatine Anthology give us some insight about what the sailors prayed her for:
"Cypris, if you save those at sea, save me, beloved goddess, who perish ship-wrecked on land." - Book 5, epigram 11
"Guardian of the surf-beaten shore, I send you, Cypris, these little cakes and simple gifts of sacrifice. For tomorrow I shall cross the broad Ionian Sea, hasting to the bosom of my Idothea. Shine favourable on my love, and on my bark, you who are queen alike of the bedroom and of the shore." - Book 5, epigram 17
"This is the place of Cypris, for it is sweet to her to look ever from the land on the bright deep, that she may makes voyages of sailors happy; and around the sea trembles, looking on her polished image." - Book 9, epigram 144 "This passing fair statue did Aeximenes erect to Aphrodite, the protectress of all navigation. Hail, sovereign Cypris! And if you give gain and welcome wealth you shall learn that a ship is most ready to go shares." - Book 9, epigram 601
translations by W. R. Paton, modernized by me.
Those epigrams give us interesting examples of offerings given to Aphrodite as well: cakes, statues, and a promise of giving back some of the wealth gained from trade. These are far from being the only sources we have on the matter. For example, Plutarch tells in Life of Theseus (18.2) how Theseus sacrificed to Aphrodite a female goat before setting sail to Crete. While it is unlikely that Plutarch had sources to back up this claim, he is using a logical association rooted in cult practices.
It is important to point out that the liveliness of the harbors also made it a prime location for sex workers, another part of the population under Aphrodite's protection. Herodotus, for example, tells us about the greek colony in Egypt, Naukratis, and how the sex workers there were successful in their business (Histories, 2. 135.5). The Piraeus port in Athens has also been described as a sex work hot spot (cf. Aeschines, Against Timarchos, 40), and it would be quite logical to consider this a widespread phenomenon, especially when the association between sex work and mariners has lasted through time. Between sex workers and sailors, harbors really do unite two worlds of Aphrodite: love and the sea.
The case of Naukratis is otherwise notable, as excavations have shown that the temple in the sanctuary of Aphrodite was one of the oldest structures of the city, dating back to 600 BC and founded by East Greek traders. Several vases were dedicated here to Aphrodite Pandemos, which makes sense, as the colony was composed of immigrant citizens from varied backgrounds.
Aphrodite’s fish
Athenaeus of Naukratis tells of how the gilt-head bream is particularly sacred to Aphrodite in Cythera, as this fish has scales that have a golden shimmer to it. The local fishmermen considered it a good omen to see a bream appear to them, and a confirmation of the goddess' protection on sea. Athenaeus also mentions the pilot-fish, probably naucrates ductor, which tends to follow sharks, but is also known to follow boats. Still according to Athenaeus, the pilot-fish was born directly from Ouranos' blood at the same time as the birth of Aphrodite. In a similar fashion than with the bream, seeing a pilot-fish swim besides the ship was considered a good omen of divine protection. More generally, the dolphin is also sacred to her, an animal she shares with Apollo and Dionysus, among others. For Plutarch, all sea life is sacred to her and should not be killed.
