The suite is unusually quiet and still when Angus arrives for his lesson.
He tries hard not to worry, reminding himself that he had just seen Merle and Magnus on his way down here, and that Taako often forgot their magic lessons and kept him waiting around, but-
But the door to Taako’s room was open, and Angus had always seen it closed and locked up tight, Taako preferring to spend his time in the kitchen or lounging across the couch in the boy’s shared living space, and the fact that it was open was abnormal enough to concern the boy detective.
Angus creeps over to the door, listening intently, and once he was close enough, he peers into Taako’s room.
It was dark, but he could distinctly make out piles of clothing and items strewn about the room, and a humanoid-shaped lump of soft-looking blankets on the bed.
And really, based on what Angus had learned about Taako from the months since they met on the Rockport Limited, this is just another confirmation of something he’d guessed about him for a while now.
He means to sneak away as quietly as he approached, he really does but as he turns to go, there’s a groan from the pile of blankets, and the sound of it compared to the absolute silence of the rest of the suite is enough to surprise a yelp out of Angus.
Immediately, a figure shoots up from the pile, and Angus feels the tiniest bit of pride when he sees it is, in fact, Taako, looking around wide-eyed and a little scared before he sees Angus in the doorway.
“Shit, kiddo,” Taako sighs, slumping down and rubbing a hand over his face, “Thought you were-ah, never mind.”
“Sorry, sir.” Angus squeaks.
“It’s no big, bubeleh.” Taako shrugs. “What are you-oh, goddmmit, we had a lesson today, didn’t we?”
Angus nods, and Taako swears, moving to throw off the blankets and stand.
“B-but!” Angus almost shouts, wincing and lowering the volume of his voice a bit, “But! I came to tell you I wasn’t…um…I wasn’t feeling well, a-and we should- we should skip today’s lesson!”
Taako narrows his eyes and studies Angus in that way he always does when Angus has just cast a spell, before his mouth twitches and he smiles.
“Well then,” he drawls, relaxing back into the bed, “can’t have you practicing when you’re not up to snuff, kid. And to be honest, good ol’ Taako here isn’t feelin’ that fab himself.”
Angus nods, and starts to open his mouth to excuse himself, but then Taako continues.
“And Mags would kill me if he found out I let you scamper off to be sick all by your lonesome. Nah, that’d be awful.” Taako hums. “So, I guess the best thing to do would be to have you c’mere and lay down for a bit until he gets back, eh? Get him to bring us some snacks and shit while he’s out.”
Angus can only blink at Taako for a long moment, a little stunned at the offer, because while Taako wasn’t exactly the cruelest of people, he had become used to the relentless teasing that the trio of adventurers aimed at him whenever they were around. It was a little unusual to hear such an offer from one of them.
And, also…Angus never really got to relax anymore ever since….
Taako tilts his head at him and pats the mattress next to him. “C’mon, bucko, Fantasy Bachelor is about to start and I’m not about to miss the beginning because you can’t make up your mind.”
Angus quickly nods and climbs up onto the bed, settling into the soft, comfortable mattress where his teacher indicated, happily accepting the blanket and pillows offered as Taako turned on the show.
