What are “Panch Prayag” and its significance?
Panch Prayag ('panch' means 'five' and 'prayag' means confluence' in Hindi) refers to five famous locations in Uttarakhand where five rivers merge into River Alaknanda to ultimately form the holy River Ganges (Ganga). One of the holiest rivers in India, the Ganges is revered as the goddess of life and its waters are used in religious ceremonies. Vishnuprayag, Nandaprayag, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag, and Devprayag are these five locations, listed in highest to the lowest of river confluence. Since it is believed that bathing in the water at these five locations cleanses the spirit and brings one closer to moksha, devotees from all over the world visit to the locations.
According to Hindu legend, Goddess Ganga descended to Earth with a powerful force. She was claimed to have been divided into 12 channels to lessen her power, which eventually came together at Devprayag (where the rivers Alaknanda and Bhagirathi meet) to form River Ganga once more.

Shekhawati region in Rajasthan is known for grand Havelis built by the business families, who moved to Kolkata in 19th century for better business prospects. These Havelis, mostly built in 19th century, were also famous for murals & fresco. I came across this interesting painting at Mandawa in Shekhawati region. The Goddess Ganga is riding a crocodile. Interesting part is that the artists & business families had never seen a crocodile, so they drew this imaginary crocodile based on some vague explanation of how it looked like. #shekhawati #shekhawatipaintings #mural #fresco #crocodile #goddessganga #mandawa #mandawahaveli #haveli #incrediblerajasthan #incredibleindia #lonelyplanetindiaofficial #lonelyplanetindiamagazine #lpmi #outlooktraveller #outlooktravellerindia #nationalgeographicindiatraveller #omthewanderer #omphotography #indianhistory (at Mandawa) https://www.instagram.com/p/BohBIUAHdcV/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=vctwwtl4rnom
