Spiti Valley Diaries Warm Heart from the Cold Night. It was 1st week of December 2018, I was staying at Kaza in Spiti Valley for last four days, and I was the only tourist there that day. This was a particularly cold night & I could feel the difference from previous nights. Internet showed temperature Minus 24°C. But the sky was clear, & I couldn't resist taking the picture of stars I stepped out on the parking area where I was staying, but had to retreat because of ice & snow around. So I went on the terrace. My mind said, go back to your room & tuck yourself in the double layer of quilt; but the heart said, "the stars are here tonight, I need to muster all my might". So there I was, with my camera, tripod & fleece (to my camera warm). At the end, this is what I got. Well, not the best of Astro picture that I have clicked, but definitely one of the most challenging one. After about 45 mins, when I retreated to my room, my fingers & toes were numb, I couldn't feel my nose, and the outer layer of jacket was mildly wet because of snow. Jesus smoking Cigarette. Shekhawati Region in Indian state of Rajasthan, once the economic epicenter of India, as late as 19th century. In fact the total turnover of all businessman from Shekhawati put together would surpass any country's GDP then. The Traders built Havelis for themselves. These Havelis have some really fine & some really crazy frescoes. It is said that Shekhawati is the world's biggest Open Art Gallery in the World. Kumbalgarh Fort, the Fort that never ends. The longest wall on earth after great wall of china belongs to this fort & extends upto 80 km. This fort in the present form was built in 15th century by Rana Kumbha, a Sissodia dynasty descendent. However, the mountain at this strategic location has it's importance for over two millennium. The Fort has remained impregnable except once, due to lack of water! The fort is also known to be the birthplace of Maharana Pratap. Shekhawati region in Rajasthan is known for grand Havelis built by the business families, who moved to Kolkata in 19th century for better business prospects. These Havelis, mostly built in 19th century, were also famous for murals & fresco. I came across this interesting painting at Mandawa in Shekhawati region. The Goddess Ganga is riding a crocodile. Bhainsrorgarh is an impregnable fort located on cliff top, surrounded by two rivers - Chambal (seen in the foreground here) & Bamani. This dramatic rock formation rising between two rivers has been a fortified location since 2nd century BC. It gained huge importance during Mewars. However, the present fort (palace as seen in the picture) was built in 1740s by the Shekhawat Rajputs. The fort is located 50 km from Kota & 300 km from Jaipur in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Bhainsrorgarh is a private property owned by the royal family. They have converted the fort into a heritage hotel. The hotel is generally open for foreigner guests. Jahaz Mahal complex, probably the most luxurious hotel ever built in India. Mandu is a small hamlet located on a 633 m high plateau on the Vindhya Ranges. It is flanked by Malwa plateau in the North & Narmada Valley in the south. Mohammed Khalji established the Khalji dynasty of Malwa (1436-1531). Ghiyas-ud-din, his son, succeeded Mohammed Khalji & ruled from 1469-1500. Jahaz Mahal (Ship Palace, named so because it resembles a ship) was a large harem built by Ghiyas-ud-din. It is believed that the harem was home to 15,000 maidens. There are two lakes on the east and west side of the palace which create a perfect illusion of a ship floating in water. Exploring new world, Driving through Mars. Tsaka La (pronounced as Tshagga La) at 4656 m (15276 ft) is an isolated high altitude mountain pass located in the South East Ladakh. This pass is an alternate route (& very rarely used by humans) connecting the famous PangongTso to an extremely remote place on Earth, Hanle. When we (my & daughter) took this road (actually you can't see a road at all, because there is none) for about 120 km, we encountered no human being, no signs of any form of life. We thought we were actually driving the car on Mars, with a milestone to nowhere. This milestone has no distance, probably because there is no road to measure this distance. This place was so cold in May & wind speed crossing our strength to stand straight, I somehow managed to click a few pics & got back in the car.
