Welcome to the KIDLIT QUEEN COMPETITION!

inspired by greats like @best-childhood-book and @best-kids-media-adult, this tourney pits the literary heroines of our childhood against each other in an all out brawl, searching for the greatest girlboss in the genre. Rounds will last one week, and qualifiers start tomorrow!

RULES:

YA doesn't count as kidlit- characters should be from anything middle grade or below. This includes picture books!

Girls only! trans girls allowed/terfs explode ect, you know the drill.

Comic books/graphic novels allowed, but still should be kidlit! For example, a character from Hildafolk would be allowed, but a character from the Sandman wouldn't.

Side and minor characters allowed

Characters don't have to be human but they do have to have to be girls. Sometimes a girl is also a computer or a train or an alien or something, and that's cool too!

No harry potter characters.

Bracket will be capped at either 32 or 64 characters depending on submission numbers, and then be determined by popularity.

Maximum 2-3 characters per series/fandom/author. If I get more I'll run qualifiers, because I know some have basically infinite characters- looking at you, Warrior Cats & Rainbow Magic.

The Multiversal Girlboss battle is over!

Let's take a moment to look at the top 8 of our fine competition.

#1 - Vraska, Queen of the Golgari

With a resume sporting feats of assassination, piracy, and a successful hostile overtaking of a swarm-like guild, it's unsurprising she'd find herself at the top.

#2 - Alesha, Khan of the Mardu

This Khan who smiles at death viciously fought her way to the top, on the back of not only her incredible list of feats but also the fact that she is, indeed, transgender.

Tied for #3 - Liliana Vess

Though I doubt she'd settle for tying, she'll have to accept it. This intrepid necromancer has seen the most limelight of any of the girlbosses in this tourney. I would go so far as to say that in her early years she defined what it meant to be a Magic girlboss. Unfortunately for her, her recently compromised girlboss status due to a pesky thing called "character growth" doomed her to third place.

Tied for #3 - Teysa Karlov

Opportunistic and cutthroat, Teysa's slow climb of the Orzhov ladder, leaving her effectively at the top of a corporate AND religious hierarchy, gave her a strong case for her ascension to the title of ultimate girlboss. Unfortunately, she lost out to someone who was actually able to take over a guild.

Tied for #5 - Queen Marchesa D'Amati

Long may reign the queen of Fiora, but let it be known that this is the highest title that she will achieve.

Tied for #5 - Nahiri, the Lithomancer

While Nahiri has surely taken some girlboss actions (read: committed some war crimes), her status as a repeated failgirl blocked her from ascending any further in this competition.

Tied for #5 - Ashnod the Uncaring

Speaking of war crimes, it's Ashnod! In spite both of her numerous felonies and her sporting that bob (one of the most girlboss hairstyles) she fell just short of greatness in this one.

Tied for #5 - Emrakul, The Promised End

Rounding out our list we have Emrakul. We hope she's having fun up there in the moon, and we hope she knows we're ready for her to join us whenever she wants.

Virtual Character Tourney - Battle for 5th!

Propaganda below (May contain spoilers!)

P03 propaganda:

bro literally is stuck in a floppy disk and its whole goal is to perform 'the great transcendence' and upload the game its trapped in into the web to copy itself across the entire internet in attempts to be in charge

Ultraman X propaganda:

X canonically lost his physical form and lives in Daiichi's phone. His presence caused Daiichi's phone to turn gold, instead of the standard-issue silver the rest of XIO's employees have. It's possible for XIO's scientists to send powerups to X because he lives on Daiichi's phone. There's also a couple episodes where X gets trapped in cyberspace and Dr. Gourman and friends have to design something for Daiichi to help him escape. (Dr. Gourman is the first to notice Daiichi is secretly Ultraman X. Also in the crossover movie, Daiichi and X got separated and X couldn't live on Daiichi's phone so he jumped to the nearest computer (which belonged to Naomi from Ultraman Orb, air date 2016) and began pulling up photos of Daiichi in a "Have You Seen This Nerd?" sort of way. The enemy goons saw Naomi and her cryptid hunting gang putting up missing posters for Daiichi and tore them down bc they had him captured at their crystal witch's base, a creepy haunted house. Eventually when Daiichi and X reunited as man and lil alien on his phone, they were so happy they ignored everyone else in the room. They were grateful enough to fight alongside Naomi's sad space cowboy, Kurenai Gai, in battle.

He's used the phone's vibration function a few times to try and get people's attention, and he doesn't like being turned face-down because he can't see. In order to take on a physical form he has to essentially fuse with his human partner Daichi. (also they get a power up form after Daichi nearly Dies to save him and it's rainbow themed.) While X is very chatty and enjoys talking with his partner, he's often a formless voice while they're fused.The exception being one occasion where he looks like an entire network. tldr this alien is gay he is very polite and deserves your vote.

There will be fandoms that get vetoed automatically, stuff like HP and such I really don't like and don't want to include. if you don't know if a fandom is vetoed send in an ask and I'll answer.

Submit as many characters as you want but only submit a character once.

No real people, or oc's. Popular AU's that have enough to be their own source can be allowed but you need to provide why and the sources.

In canon they MUST look human. They can not have canon non-human traits, so c!philza minecraft would not qualify because he canonically has wings but c!tommyinit could because in canon he's just a guy.

Your little guys doesn't have to be human tho, if they are technically not human but look completly human in canon they qualify. So like a hsr or genshin character, they are human but not technically because they are not from earth.

If you have image propaganda you can share it. It will be linked. if it is fanart the artist must be credited or it will not be added to the propaganda

If you have a CANON image of a character that doesn't have one I will replace it with the image you provide but no fanart for this.

btw i got an oc who shares the exact same name as one of the ocs in the tourney.

But he is an immortal 40 year old who just realized he was immortal because he did not age past 25 (and other stuff). at first he just thought because of genetics, but then he remembered that as a mere 5 year old, HE WAS FORCEFULLY MADE INTO THE GRIM REAPER! AND NOT JUST ANY GRIMREAPER! NO NO HE IS A CUSTOS PRIMUS, A SPECIAL KIND! WHY????

BECAUSE IN MY OC UNIVERSE WHICH IS ONPAR WITH A SOURDOUGH STARTER THAT GIRLBOSSED TO CLOSE TO THE SUN. There are two grim reapers, one which is just the regular kind. Which comes from the underworld. Then there's the custos primus! They're also the body guards of the demi gods of the universe. The normal grim reapers come from when people die and then the god of the underworld can judge them based on their actions and go "do you want to be a grim reaper," while the custos primos. They can die, but not a natural death, and the first person who sees their corpse! CONGRATS ON IMMORTALITY!

Many are simply just unaware of their role until it is too late, because if 3 or more demigods die while you're guarding them (which many are at max doing subconsciously). You're also dead, finito. And my oc was being babysat by one just as her third demigod perished due to my oc's ex stepdad and friends messing around against a cult. So my oc, he got married, got a decent job, had a child. Then he realized that it is all pointless and he should just devote his life to a uni student who knew his brother in high school.

Match 1 and 2...

Carimus and Margaret lost!

Damn you guys took out the whole family in round 1 lol (maggie was also a round 1 loser in the previous tourney)

Carimus: West of Loathing protagonist, part of the "2 bards 1 evil wizard" timeline. He's an edgy snake oiler with a rocky past who firmly believed that nothing in this world could love him (and then something in this world loved him).

Margaret: Shadows over Loathing protagonist, part of the of the "2 bards 1 evil wizard" timeline. She's a cheese wizard, one of two twin daughters of Carimus, and doomed to be evil from the start because she was my shadow taint run lol!! She eventually morphs into the evil monster girlboss Margaret but cooler (or MBC for short).

Match 3 and 4...

Beddin Spectre and Loony lost!

Beddin Spectre: I DONT THINK IVE POSTED HER BEFORE. She's a Shadows over Loathing protagonist, and a milk mage (like cheese wizard but a little to the left). She inspects every bed she can find, even ones she shouldn't be able to reach normally. How does she do it I have no clue honestly she's just built different

Loony: The main protagonist of Pocket Clockwork and an AU version of Moony. She's a lot more quiet and timid than her original counterpart. Loony lives in a small town named Minut Town, going by a nice perfect little schedule every day. Until, yknow, plot happens and such.

"why no women" good news! Five pebbles uses she/her pronouns, about as close we gonna get. Bad news. she's getting voted out lmao.

BUT to be entirely honest? I think its two reasons: 1. features in men that are unattractive can be twisted to be attractive in women, 2. there's a lot more 'bad' men in media than 'bad' women. Stereotypically, if a man is a villain, the media will have a lot of options- mastermind, persuasive, cunning, incel, horribly cruel, abusive, antihero, list goes on. Women villain? Welp sorry she uses the power of booba to win battles. Theres also the issue that some crimes committed by characters on this poll are seen as only commit-able by a man (and thus you will be hard pressed to find a woman doing them in media), but im not poking THAT hornets nest here.

Like lets give some examples. Grey Mann from tf2 is undebatably unsexy. The Adminsitrator is LITERALLY the same character but a woman (and maybe a little more unhinged), and yeah i know for a fact people would want her in some fashion. If the Onceler was a woman? She'd have a suit and do 'tch dawww look at those fuzzy animals losing their homes </3' and people would absolutely want her to step on them. She'd have those black heels that click evilly on the smooth tile on the ground and people would go nuts for her, what a girlboss. L as a woman? hot gamer goth chick, next. Harry? sexy women detective with drinking problems who gets suuuper drunk but looks flawless in her eyeliner. Im pretty sure theres like nine different shows hinging on that character's power of booba. Doof? That one chick from spiderverse but a little more wet rat flavored.

We could just stick a fucking tire inflator in some of these guys, pump it a few times to give them top surgery, and suddenly everyone would be going awooga at them despite 0 change. The only real unsexy woman i can think is Cruella, but im gonna be honest she is only restrained by the puppy murder. Pam from Stardew is pretty bad too from what ive heard though.

my two cents are that some fictional women are pretty but not hot / sexy. also some fictional women obviously just are none of the above like in this tourney. no i will not elaborate. yes i am right.

anyway win for 5p! i am not equipped to talk about genuine real sexism at 2 in the morning but these are all good points.
