“You’re too early!” Steve enters through the lanai rubbing his hair with a towel.

“Half past we agreed.” Danny parks his butt against the old chest of drawers next to the dining table, nipping at a steaming coffee.

Steve throws the towel over his shoulder and without even batting an eye he reaches for the coffee mug and gently removes it from Danny’s hand. “You made coffee? How long are you already here? You’re not an early bird. I am. Nervous?”

Danny elevates his eyebrows. “You have no manners. That’s my coffee - “ He touches his lips with the fingers Steve just brushed with his own ocean-wrinkled fingers a second ago.

“It’s my house, my mug, my coffee maker - “ Steve just watches Danny over the rim of the mug like observing a target through spyglasses about two miles away.

Still, Danny can’t tell if this is worth something to lose a night’s sleep over. “Sometimes you’re a child.”

Steve laughs and walks away with Danny’s coffee.

“And just for the record. I’m not nervous. It’s court. Nothing I haven’t seen before. It’s important today though. I want this asshole behind bars. We need to be on time.”

“I’m always on time. Gimme me five minutes. Three to shower, two to get dressed. Get the files, would you? On the desk by the window. I made some further notes just in case.”

Danny listens to Steve’s retreating steps, follows him in his mind to his bedroom, hears the opening of the closet doors, and then the low snick of the bathroom door closing. The running water makes him heave a sigh. He forces his mind off those images he has no right to think about. He turns to get the files and grabs them only to stare at a notebook Steve must have left by accident. It has a look that doesn’t fit Steve’s image of a neat freak and a we-do-it-the-Navy-way nerd. It’s well-used with dog ears and rings of coffee cups. It looks like it has been pushed one too many times in the back pocket of some pants without a care in the world how it would survive. It looks maltreated. It’s so unfamiliar to see this piece lying on the desk next to a stack of plain white paper, pens and other writing utensils neatly orderd, books, and other things a man needs to keep his affairs in order.

Danny knows it’s wrong but he has no control over his hand that touches the notebook. It’s the kind of cheap notebook one can buy in any shop. No title. He opens it. The first page is filled with doodles and just drawings, nothing makes sense. Some single words are written repeatedly like ‘sun’, or ‘wind’, or ‘brothers’. The next three pages are empty except the circles. All kinds of shaped circles. The most interesting page is full of hand-written text and the title says ‘what makes me happy’ with a skull sketch right next to it.

Danny knows he should close it. This is private, intimate to a level he has no right to pry about but the way the letters move together and form that sentence tugs at something inside his chest. Steve must go to therapy and this is one of his homework he has been ordered to do. He has never mentioned therapy sessions. Danny feels a sting of hurt because yeah, because he wishes Steve would trust him with this.

Steve’s handwriting is always full of self-esteem, accurate and solid. But this here . . . these screams of insecurity and feeling at a loss of words to express something he has been forced to do. Danny knows how Steve hates such mind-befuddling stuff. He loathes head shrinks and what comes with it. But he is willing to go with the load of homework. It must be serious then.

The water has stopped running.

Danny blinks and inhales deeply. He wants to look away but his eyes catch the words that are written mushed together on the page with too high pressure on the pen. ‘Beachbeachsunsandfoodlotsoffoodbeachsunsandfoodlotsofoodwhatthefuckdoiknowidontwantthis...’ and there in between was one word, crossed out a few times almost unreadable but Danny recognizes his name in the middle of this worm of linked up words. The understanding causes a sharp pain piercing through his chest and he jerks back when he hears Steve thundering down the stairs.

“Ready! Are you coming?” Steve shouts in his direction but Danny is already at the door, looking strictly ahead and pulling it open.

“Took you long enough,” Danny complains unnessecarily and keeps the car keys out of Steve’s reach. “I’m driving.” His heart still hiccups in his chest. Steve wears a fragrance like amber and spice and the ache in his chest ups.

“Don’t be a dick. You waited exactly five minutes.” Steve grumbles and makes a scene about his long legs that don’t fit in the too small foot space of the passenger seat.

“Don’t even try to be difficult. And don’t whine about getting car sick. Today, I’m driving. I’ll take you out to lunch after court. What say you?”

“Just you and me?” Steve sounds tense.

“Yeah, just us.” Danny hopes he says it casually enough and, of course, he catches the strain in Steve’s muscles. He doesn’t know what to do with this.

“You’re paying?” Steve twists in his seat.

“Was my plan, yeah. Why? Got a problem with being invited?” Danny just has decided that he has a new goal every day: to pull a smile from Steve. A real one. The rare one. He shifts gear. “You never have your wallet on you. Got used to it. So? Deal?”

“Yeah, deal but I’m buying. You’re driving. Partners share.” Steve doesn’t meet Danny’s eyes and kicks with his feet into the end of the foot space.

“Okay, fair enough and stop with the kicking already. You’re like a child.” Danny filters into the morning traffic. His heart doesn’t want to calm down. Steve just offered to pay for lunch. He gets lost in thoughts. That’s a fucking new one.

“You okay?” Steve asks after a while into the silence.

“Yeah, good. All good. Just getting ready for court. Mentally ready.” Danny tries to pull his inner eyes from the picture of Steve’s handwriting. The non-verbal message left an imprint on his heart.

Steve side-eyes him more than once. Danny’s stomach doesn’t unknot.

“What are you doing? Why are you looking at me like that, huh? I won’t jump from any fucking roof because you’re paying for lunch later. I don’t owe you a favor because of it.” Danny rants at Steve feeling already better.

“What? You think I’m that guy? Seriously, Danny? That’s mean, even for you.No, especially from you.” Steve moves his legs and crosses his arms over his chest but Danny sees the smile that tugs at his lips.

Danny shuts up but his fingers tingle with the urge to reach over and touch Steve. They’re going to have lunch today. He’d say it’s a start.

what up, I'm camille, I'm 33, and I never learned how not to include second chance romance in every wip

lately, I've been all about fantasy and I blame that fully on falling in love with dnd last year. I've dabbled plenty in urban fantasy (when branching out from contemporary romance) but dnd especially has given me an appreciation of more subgenres, plus lots of inspiration

current wip: the madness and the blade it's more goofy silly than the title implies because the title came first and shit happens!! I wrote my 50k for nano, and in the weeks since, I've just been in sandbox mode, getting to know the characters and the setting better. when I'm ready to shift back into the main story, I'll do an intro to wip series

briefly, I'll say it's fantasy adventure romance about a thief Retrieval Specialist roped into a scheme to recover a magical artifact, and the ragtag group of weirdos assembled to assist, including not one, not two, but THREE former flames plus an estranged spouse (fake relationship/real married)

writing is my hobby, not my job! it's fun and I've deliberately carved out space for it in my life, but I'm not chasing a finish line with anything I'm working on. it's all just vibes, baby ✌🏽

CREATE A MOOD/STORYBOARD FOR YOUR STORY ON PINTEREST.

It definitely helps to visualize what your story’s look/aesthetics or vibe is about. It’s helped me so much, being a visual person, to see all the gothic, spooky, gory imagery that lingers in my thriller/horror series.

When her ex-bestfriends knock on her door and ask for their old band to get back together, Nat slams the door in their face. Somehow, this is not the end of the story.

WITCH'S TIME:

Lorelei Douxruisseau had always had the unfortunate tendency to get into trouble on her own. It didn't matter if it was about pissing off a Goddess, starting a war or terrorizing a village or two, all these dubious decisions were always motivated by the same thing: boredom. And it was this same boredom, Lorelei's secular enemy, that encouraged her to push open another Witch's door unannounced. And to meddle in their messy ritual. But really, it's not her fault. After all, who'd have guessed that behind their brilliant idea and idiotic ritual was the last of the Maledictus, eh? Not Lorelei, that's who. After an ill-prepared ritual and a poorly negotiated contract, when the Mighty Ones find themselves projected into Lorelei Douxruisseau's past, the whole fabric of the universe shakes and the veils of time are torn apart. Faced with an amnesiac Lorelei devoid of magic, they'll have to be patient if they ever want to return home. And they'll have to pray that she doesn't slit their throats when she regains her memories.

-> I'm on the third book for this series and it has been kicking my ass big time. I had to cut it in half and put one half in the fourth book, and I was so pissed I haven't picked it up since.

THE FLEDGLING

Jo Hautain is in love with a vampire. It has been her reality since her girlfriend has been turned, seven years ago, and yet, she still manages to be surprise but the utter bullshit that came with this life-changing transformation. What do you mean Lou has to bond with an established Coven to rule her bloodlust ? What do you mean Jo is not enough ? Still, she is not one to go gently into the night. If the Rodins think they are worthy of Lou, they will have to prove it. When the vampiric masquerade ball Lou has been invited to (and which Jo crashed) takes a turn for the worse, she must come up with a new plan to ensure her girlfriend's survival while trying to preserve her own heart. Unfortunately, Lou isn't the only one having issues of the supernatural variety. Iris suffers from a rare fae disease currently trying to kill her, Charlie still can't accept being a wolf three nights a month and is sinking even deeper into despair as time goes by, Alex longs to return to the sea, despite knowing it would be her undoing. And Ana is hunted and hounded by the Virulentes, the less-than-human leaders of the witch's community, who resent her "abusive use of magic". Add to the mix two customers too charming for their own good, a mysterious Coven settling back into their town and a ghost from the past lurking in the shadows, and Jo is ready to throw the towel. No, really, it's not easy being to be the only sensible one around, but someone has to do it. Jo just wishes it would be someone else, for once.

-> This is my July Camp NaNo project and I'm 16k in out of 20k so I'm doing pretty well. Is it good? Meh, maybe not, but at least it's moving forward unless the other two XD

Once upon a time, in a long-mothballed issue of Weekly Shonen Sunday, a fellow named Gosho Aoyama trotted off his favorite films of the '90s-and-before. I got my hands on it a few weeks back, and let me tell you: a couple are predictable, most are anything but. Hell, only two of 'em are Japanese!

You'll find the other eight below—mixed in with a whole school of red herrings. From now through the fifteenth, anyone interested is invited to take their best guesses and vote, vote, vote!

NaNo is around the corner and I'm getting ready for Yet Another Keinatsu Longfic, so just dumping my thoughts here bc it's Friday and slow at work and it's been a while since I've done this. (Massive spoilers under the cut)

So in the game, it's mentioned that Project Ark is meant to prepare the 15 compatibles for life in the real world. The first 18 years are spent living in their assigned Sector within the simulation. The last 2 years are spent in a training session for final preparations. Due to the fuckery that happens in the game, the simulation is reset every 16 years after the Deimos invasion. Insert the events of the game here, where they finally break the cycle and free themselves.

However.

What if there were no Deimos, no Sentinels? What if everything ran its intended course? What if these poor kids were living their normal lives and wake up elsewhere and discover the truth? What would this two-year training program look like? What would be different in this AU, where everyone grew up in their assigned Sector?

Well, that's more or less this fic in a nutshell.

To literally no one's surprise, this is yet another keinatsu fic. It's very similar to WLYH in that it's got a bunch of angst and trauma recovery (all the more reason to lean into that comfort after all the hurt), but... it should be more light-hearted in comparison? Hopefully? It's hard to tell, because the abrupt shift of everyday life to "oh hey that was all a lie and now you need to get ready for the actual real world as humanity's only survivors" is... A Lot. And I don't think that's something anyone, let alone these kids, can digest in a single day, never mind two years.

Natsuno will be the main POV character, a) because I don't feel I write from her perspective enough, b) she's super fun to write, and c) I think out of everyone involved, she'd be the most excited about this reveal. She's actually living her sci-fi dreams! Why wouldn't she love that?! I'd also need to take into consideration a) what she did the extra two years in the simulation and b) the fact she didn't really have anyone else growing up, especially after Yuki moved. I looked up the rates at which high school students moved onto university in Japan each decade and for women in the 1980s it was stupid low. Like 15% ish, or so my research is telling me. So that plus Natsuno being Natsuno, I don't think she ever thought about higher education. Maybe she struggled with holding a day job. Maybe her parents pressured her into dating and finding a good man to settle down with and start a family with. All very Not Natsuno things. No shit she'd be happy to escape that and live this sci-fi dream come true.

But then on the flip side, there's Keitaro.

It guts me apart to think about how his 2188 iteration was aware of how long the simulation would run and being okay with his clone living through not just WWII, but everything pertaining to the atomic bombs and then the aftermath of losing the war. As much as I want to put Keitaro in a bubble and save him from this mess, if I'm sticking to this concept, I need to drag him through this hell. God, this is probably going to be the toughest part for me to write - this poor shell of a young man who has seen too fucking much. Which, again, is a big reason why the story will be from Natsuno's POV, because for the first half of the story, she doesn't know what he went through. She just thinks he's being quiet because he's shy, because maybe he's nervous or misses his home, because maybe he's like her and struggled to fit in due to being a weird nerd, so all the better to try and befriend him! 🫠

But overall, it's a very slice-of-life coming-of-age story that will probably read like a weird college AU. I just want to explore the worldbuilding possibilities along with what their relationship might look like in those circumstances. I really love their reincarnated soulmate vibes of always finding each other and always falling for one another. And despite the angst and trauma (yet again lolsob), I'm really excited to write about them meeting for the first time, learning about each other, and very slowly falling in love.

And according to my tracker and based on the current outline, the word count range is anywhere between 60k to uh.... 280k 🥲 it's a good thing I love these sweeties

who is more likely to feed the other in public? omala, she doesn't care about being in public or not lol... she clearly has been to all of the etiquette.

who gives the other random little compliments? nano always telling her how pretty she is, how good she looks and he can't get enough of her. she always feels her best when he does.

who is always stealing food from the other’s plate? again with the etiquette lol... if she wants it then she's gonna steal lol.

who is more likely to let the other borrow their car? lol i mean... if she needs to go somewhere he will send a car. no need to borrow anything when your a royal either lmao.

who makes the list before they go grocery shopping? omala make cute lists, all with different colors depending on the category. she likes the planning!!

who makes sure the other takes their meds when sick? nano mostly, like she will say that she's fine and then he will be like no... i don't buy that. take them.

who watches sports and has to teach the other the rules? oh nano has to teach her and she will pepper him with questions throughout the game. she knows nothing but wants to know more bc of him.

who pulls the other to their feet for a dance in the living room? nano will pull her up after they've had some wine and it's some nice music playing in the background. truly a romantic!!

who has to keep reminding the other to hurry or they’ll be late? nano will tell her as she's running around trying to get ready in time!! a time optimistic queen hehe.

who is the one most likely to get a tattoo with the other’s name? omala.... no doubt. she will get it somewhere private though, for his eyes only kind of thing.

omg there are so many iconic nano scenes i want the Lore on (if you're feeling up to it .. the francis&samantha balcony conversation at the end of smt too...) but plssss... "A shout sounds from below. That's the signal. Kin readies his stance and thinks he feels a phantom hand on his shoulder, a ghostly breath at his ear.“Shoot straight,” it breathes. “I love you.”Kin doesn't bother to turn. He knows that there will be nothing there."

TTSP DIRECTORS COMMENTARY

okay this is like The Iconic scene for me, i spent a lot of this novel making up as i went along in very involved facebook chats to my friend davyd but this was one of the like Core things, this is the shot that's in the amv as the music lulls. reading back over it now i could have put a lot more into kin and maimou's relationship growth (story of my fuckin life writing nanos) but that voice saying shoot straight i love you is maimou...my influences during this nano are both very jumbled and very clear but i think a lot of this scene was built on a combo of The Vibes of soul eater and the hunger games. kin in this scene is in a state of like extreme shock, poor kid has been subjected to lena betrayal + mom revival + fight with his crush + house arrest by his mom + unceremonious announcement that he killed his crush in the span of like a day and he's just broken out and then gone on a pointless side quest to get the author's self-insert some bread and now he's back and about to shoot the arrow to kill his mom and in and among all of that, the heightened state and wearing gods and everything, maimou's ghost manages to get a hand on his shoulder and say one last thing. CANNOT STRESS HOW MUCH THIS WAS THEEEEEE MOMENT IN THIS NANO, THIS WAS THE ANIME SCENE, THIS WAS WHAT I WAS BUILDING TO!!

SMT DIRECTORS COMMENTARY

goddddddd this scene.....in the dream i had that started all of this it had to be samantha at the end, and when they were all in the building together or really even before when they saw the city on the horizon i knew that francis was going to send samantha in instead of rupert & i think i was building this scene since then... i feel like i did really well with characterization in this nano and everyone being distinct and it ended up being that thing where sam and francis were on the balcony and it was like, fuck, francis is going to send samantha in, and samantha's gonna do it. i feel like im talking in circles i havent slept well. it's about the sadness of it. it was like objectively the right choice because of samantha's powers vs rupert's which sam notes but that's not even why francis said it which i think is the bit that makes it hit so hard. image being a teen and asking your best friend to put herself in potentially mortal danger because you can't bear to lose your crush. imagine saying yes to that. its about the ANGUISH

GWORL I AM LIVING for crow song. The aura is immaculate and so gothic noir, it’s perfectly spooky and the tension between Gwyn and Az is INSANE like it’s clear he’s battling his illness so much but he wants her so badly but he’s so afraid he’ll hurt her but he’s being driven so hard by his instincts and it’s just perfect. You know how to curate a vibe, that’s for sure. I CANNOT wait for the rest and I know the eventual smut is going to SMUT and I’m so ready. You’re a master at this, publish a book please, I’ll buy multiple copies (is that something you’d ever have interest in?? I’d be so supportive)

I should be working on nano but i have work in an hour and a half so I'm just gonna vibe probably.

I was going to try and post chapter 14 of &here i am alive before nano started and while it has been beta read and is technically ready for posting the first third of the chapter is not amazing and like. I want it to be better before I post it. I think I've mentioned it before, but chapter 14 is a bit of a info dump chapter which I kinda hate but Izuku and reader-san about to be in a pretty good position to talk about reader-san's past.

Actually this discussion was planned to be as early as chapter 11 but the events that transpired in 12 and 13 have a better lead in to the discussion I think.

But anyway because of the chapter's content I've been holding off on working on it. I wanna get past it but I don't wanna post a chapter I'm not 100% behind.
