like oh my god context is king. there are jokes it is okay to say in private around friends. there are jokes it’s okay to say when you were really close with someone. tommy can joke about donations because he’s already donated tons of his own money to the sarcoma foundation and was incredibly close to techno, even if he didn’t donate in that specific event he has many times in the past. george joking about it in front of a large audience while not being as close as techno and tommy were repeatedly is insensitive because of the fact it was in public and it was by someone who at least in the public eye was never massively close with techno. it comes across as disrespectful and uncomfortable regardless of the intention and getting mad at people for getting uncomfortable at that is fucking wild. this isn’t cancellation at least not what I’ve seen it’s people getting uncomfortable at a joke which is free speech innit.

Okay, so recently I’ve been working on rewriting a fairly popular fic of mine on Ao3. I’m really sad to toss out the old version, but the main antagonist was c!Dream, and after all the stuff about CC!Dream, I’m really not comfortable writing about him any more. It makes me super sad to toss out 80k words since I loved that story so much, but I think revitalizing it with a new villain will make me feel a lot better about it.

That part isn’t really the issue. The problem is that I’ve removed a few other antagonists as well (Aka the ones inspired by c!George, c!Punz, and c!Sapnap) and now I have a lot of roles that need to be filled. I’ve already assigned different roles to all the other dsmp ccs, and there’s not really a lot of room to shuffle things around. I’ve also added a few of the Spanish ccs from qsmp since they’re so fun, but I still need to find 2 more to replace my George and sapnap characters. Does anyone have a mcyt that’s comfortable with being in a vigilante family-based au fic?

The fact that when I came back from the cinema wanting to see some cool art and people talking about interesting stuff after something so flipin awesome and the first thing i see was the dream team being so fucking rude during a CHARITY EVENT for their DEAD FRIEND is honestly so disheartening.

My grandfather was so lucky to get cancer twice and survive both times, I knew someone who lost her dad to cancer. I know someone who survived childhood cancer. One of my great grandparents died of cancer, my family on both sides is extremely family oriented if he never died I would have met him. The fucking disrespect that they showed should not be laughed at, it shouldn’t be encouraged.

The fact they were playing airhorns during Technodad’s speech, one that should have been respected and really quiet durning and no one interrupting is the fucking worse. I don’t care if dteam fans say that it’s funny and Techno would have laughed because it’s not the fucking point!!!

The whole festival was a charity event in honour of their friend, and for Technodad his fucking son. No one should have gone though this. I don’t care if this comes across as rude or overreacting because the dteam need to grow the fuck up and learn that their actions have fucking consequences for once.

This isn’t supporting a brand that’s actually a scam, this isn’t saying something offensive by accident. This is being rude and disrespectful.

And it even hurts that none of their fans are going to care a single bit because I don’t fucking know maybe they’ll say “but it was a joke” or “dream has ADHD your being ableist” because none of that shit matters when you realise that neither of those things matter when it’s about respect.

These are the same fans who will defend these mother fuckers to the grave but when someone like Niki Niahchu accidentally uses avae because she doesn’t know about American history or what avae is because she lives in Germany(or any non American country because the world doesn’t revolve around you fuckers) and is called overreactive during mcc and having a lot of stress put onto her and BREAKS DOWN ON STREAM it’s ok because they think it is.

I want dteam fans to see this post and be uncomfortable, I don’t care if I’m being mean to your pretty white boys because they have been allowed to do anything with a platform that is way to big for them for too long. I’m allowed to be angry as well, I’m allowed to be mean, I’m not apologising to you if you feel sad that I’m being mean about them because they need to grow up.

This is gonna get a bit negative, but I don't understand how some say that they love the George Lucas movies but yet the Jedi were wrong and forbid love and family. Like how???

This has its origins in the way how fans reacted to Episodes I, II and III. When they did not get the young Darth Vader they imagined for themselves, they started to insist, the reason why Anakin Skywalker is nothing what they imagined, is because George Lucas cannot write and/or direct and Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen are terrible actors and they can't portray the character in the correct way. This resulted in that the idea, the story that you can derive from the actual movies is not the real story, embedded itself into popular culture, and it mutated into the idea that you have to "find out" the "real" story behind the fall of Anakin Skywalker.

This idea, "the Jedi were wrong and forbid love and family" is just the latest mutation of this phenomenon, and it fits neatly into the "good idea, bad execution" narrative fans perpetuate, but most importantly: some fans are more comfortable with declaring compassion being unconditional love and attachment as selfish grasping as nonsense and even unhealthy and malicious, than to accept, Star Wars is, in fact, challenging them to think about how they relate to their loved ones. So it makes perfect sense that they insist on this narrative. In addition, there is this cultural notion that you have this list of "must have" things that you need to be content and happy. Just look at Legends stories: they couldn't rest until Luke Skywalker got laid and ended up in a marriage with kids, because, "duh, that's how normal people are" and anything that deviates from that must be in need of a reformer, someone who enlightens/fixes/liberates them. When you add the even more central notion, that children "belong" to their parents because they "made them" and a "truly loving parent would never bear to be without their children" and the idea that when parents are making decisions for their children is somehow letting the children to decide for themselves, you end up with "the Jedi were wrong and forbid love and family" very quickly. And the biggest issue in the Star Wars fandom is that fans are so caught up in fanon that they're no longer able to tell the difference between what is actually in the movies and what they more or less agreed to be in the movies.

This reaches a new level when people are trying to impose this kind of narrative because they want one of the most popular stories of the globe to affirm their values and ideas and way of life, I wrote this about in detail here:

I really like what they did with the union plotline this episode--I thought that the stakes of it were taken seriously and that they leaned into the drama in a way that was really compelling. George's visit to the Hendersons' home was a wonderful bit of role reversal, and visually I thought they did that scene excellently--I could write a whole post on the Henderson house set, but I thought it was really well-done, stark (especially compared to the interiors we're used to on this show) but dignified.

But I think my fundamental problem with the handling of this plotline gets back to my complaint about the George-Henderson scene in 2.03, that the writing never allowed Henderson to rebut George's arguments even when they were obviously not only in bad faith but built upon entirely false premises. Here, George's change of heart is just that--a charge of heart, without changing his mind, which casts Henderson and the other (nameless) mill workers as figures of pathos rather than intellect.

They exist within their circumstances to stir George's conscience rather than to pose an alternate philosophy--in part because, of course, if George truly changed his mind a large part of the show's practical foundation would crumble. But by positioning them this way, the show cedes no ground to their perspective, but instead particularizes them within their pathetic (literally and in the 19th century sense, a source of pathos) circumstances, which serves to both a) prevent any intellectual or symbolic reach beyond those circumstances and b) sentimentalize George's decision in a way that keeps him and the show from having to incorporate any of Henderson's arguments--which he was never allowed to make--into his/its worldview.

like, genuinely. taking accountability for your actions in perpetuation of abuse and rape culture is the first step to changing that culture. it doesn’t make you a bad person just because you did a bad thing (unless you were intentionally trying to cause harm) but you have to admit you are not immune to accidentally supporting the bad thing and take accountability for that. if you supported george's statements on sexual harassment, or dream's sexual jokes towards minors, or sapnap getting paid money to stream on a platform which openly harbours rapists and sex abusers, you've been a part of keeping the environment that makes it hard for victims to have come out. if you started believing in anti-victim sentiments and harassed other abuse victims for talking about how it made them uncomfortable, you’ve supported this environment. if you assumed anyone uncomfortable with your streamer or trying to talk out against them was inherently lying solely because it was your streamer, you helped support an enviroment that fostered abusers.

and that sounds harsh, and I’m sorry. but it’s true. and to a degree, I think everyone in this community has done that with people at one point in their lives. it's very easy to be manipulated, but it’s also very easy to be wilfully blind, and that’s not something irredeemable or a permanent stain. you can change, but you need to identify in yourself what caused you to act like that and make a conscious change. it’s healthier for you and it’s healthier for the environment. if we want to avoid this in the future, we need to be proactive in calling out actual potentially harmful behaviour, even if it’s from someone you like. or we will continue to harbour mass amount of abusers.

most content creators are not abusers. most, to be honest, are awkward introverted nerds with social anxiety. at least, that’s what i've got from the ones my brother knows (and that includes some big ccs). but while they’re a huge part of it bc being in front of a camera instead of people is a huge draw, there’s another draw that attracts a less savoury crowd- and that’s the position of power. and unless you’re willing to listen and be kind to genuine, serious criticism of harmful actions, and ccs are willing to do the same, abuse and sexual assault WILL continue to be normalised in these spaces. it is not your sole responsibility, but it IS a responsibility to make sure to avoid that now you know the possibilities aggressively attacking any criticism can hide. caiti had to deal with people with her abusers face threaten her for speaking negatively towards him. do not let that happen again.
