Not going to lie: there are FIVE rare (and spectacular) vintage Telecasters visible in this shot from a visit to my friend's collection. HOWEVER...can I please request that you confine your attention to the one in the middle...just for a second! 😉
1969 Fender Rosewood Telecaster.
The all Rosewood Tele was made famous when Fender gifted the original to George Harrison, and George can be seen playing it in the famous Beatles' "Rooftop Concert" atop 3 Saville Row, on 30th January, 1969.
I have seen several MIJ reissues of this model, and even a few Custom Shop shop versions...but this is my first "real" Rosewood Tele.

Within You, Without You (18+)
George Harrison × GN!Reader
Genre: Smut, fluff, angst, all the things
Warnings: A very short sex scene, power play if you squint, slight nipple play, convos about insecurities and low self confidence and stuff like that
Words: 3.2k
Summary: 1967 era; You need to find a way to relax, and George offers to be your guide through tantral meditation
T/N: Domine- Latin for master; used from a place of utmost respect
===================================
Tumblr media
==============================
You had tried everything. Anything that would help to decrease your stress levels. These past few weeks had been tough on you, and all you wanted was for your brain to quiet down for a bit. But nothing seemed to work, no matter how hard you tried. So, you thought of the only thing that even had a shot at clearing your head: meditation. And lucky for you, you had just the person to teach you.
For someone with his level of experience, George was very well versed in the art of meditation. He had been given the tools to get to a place where he was comfortable practicing on his own, and that was really all there was to it. And he was more than happy to pass on any amount of his knowledge to you.
"Most people start out in the position you see most often, which is sitting on the floor with your legs crossed." George instructed as he sat down next to you, demonstrating the position. You couldn't help but stare at the wide variety of decor placed throughout the room. George had a specific room that he would go only to meditate. Apparently, having a designated space is supposed to enhance your chances of successful meditation.
You had half expected the room to be devoid of color, but it was quite the opposite. It looked as though all the wonderful colors of the rainbow had performed an interpretive dance across the walls, twirling and swinging about in perfect harmony. This was not the environment you had in mind.
"I always thought meditation was supposed to be about clearing your mind." You stated. "That's why most yoga studios are painted white." George gave you a confused stare.
"Meditation is about clearing your mind of negative energy. Not blanking it out completely." He replied, smoothing out the carpet fibers beneath his feet. "Meditating in a completely white room is not going to help you at all. You should be surrounded by things that are going to positively stimulate your brain." He looked around for a moment, admiring his own decor before turning back to you. "Although positive stimulation looks different for everyone, an assortment of colors is the most natural form of it."
“So is meditation always done this way?” You questioned, honestly having no clue where to start. George always had so much knowledge to share, and it wasnt that you had no interest in meditation. You often felt that it wouldn’t work for you, but realized that you would never know if you never tried.
“This practice is the best entry to meditation. But once it comes more naturally to you, you can do it from anywhere at any time,” George explained, “To reach an optimal mental state for meditation, it does take much more than to sit cross-legged and close your eyes. It’s about reaching an internal piece, which would then translate to the physical body. However, the key is to start small.” He motioned towards several fluffy pillows on the floor beside him. “If the floor is too hard, you can use one of these.”
“And by doing this, I'll just…feel better?” You asked, getting comfy on one of the pillows. There were several colors, the one you chose being a soft orange.
“Well, not exactly.” George chuckled, He was always so patient. “You have to incorporate your mind as well. Like I said, clearing your mind means clearing negative energy. The best way to do that is to think of a place that brings you comfort and imagine that you’re there. To get in touch with both your mind and your body.”
You sighed. That was always your problem. You felt like you were too much in your own head and needed an escape. How were you supposed to be one with your mind if you didn’t even want to be in there in the first place?
“I just know what’s going to happen,” You whined, “I’m gonna get frustrated and it’ll have the opposite effect on me.”
George blinked at you, pursing his lips. “Can you at least try, love?” He offered, “I’m not going anywhere. I’ll be here if you need me.”
You couldn’t help but smile. George’s genuine desire to help you truly did make things easier, but it was your stubborn brain that wouldn’t put in the effort. It technically wasn’t entirely your fault, but it was hell to live with. But George was right. Not trying meant shutting out the possibility of finding a solution. He didn’t want you to do it just to please him. He wanted you to want to do it. To do it for yourself.
“Alright.’ You said, exhaling sharply. “I’ll try.”
George smiled warmly, adorable fangs on full display. He didn’t have to do much to help you get ready as you were already in position. He stood off to the side, waiting to begin his part of the process as you settled into a comfortable zone. You did everything he said. Crossing your legs, closing your eyes, and relaxing into a decompressing posture. You drew in a deep breath, exhaling and trying your hardest to release any tension along with it.
After you closed your eyes, you felt George continue to stand around you, assessing your method of choice. You decided to go with the traditional method, despite your earlier qualms about its lack of stimulation. You figured that maybe less was more, and that by trying to calm your body down to an optimal level, you would achieve your desired outcome. But of course, without fail, once you tried to focus on finding a sense of tranquility, your thoughts took over and you were back where you started.
“I can’t…” You said shakily. “I can’t do it.’ You still hadn’t opened your eyes, because you knew if you did, there would be no stopping the flow of tears.
“Perhaps you need something else to focus on.” George replied, standing behind you now. He placed his hands on your shoulders and waited there for a moment. You didn’t tense up or try to move away, so he proceeded. He slid his fingers up and down your neck, gently squeezing your muscles as he went. You still kept your eyes closed, but furrowed your brows in confusion. To you, this seemed like the most inopportune time for a shoulder massage, but refused to object. You trusted that George knew what he was doing to some degree.
“Think of yourself as if you were facing them directly.” He announced, implementing a new kind of tactic, “Give them advice on how to achieve your goal right now.”
“George, what are you doing?” You interrupted, “How is this supposed to make me relax for meditation? The last thing I want to be thinking about is how I view myself.” George removed his right hand from your shoulder and placed his index finger at the base of your head, slowly tracing down your spine. You shivered, feeling like electricity was flowing through your body. “How did you do that?” You whispered, a slightly shudder moving through your voice as you spoke. “Why did I feel that?”
“We often find it hard to look within ourselves for answers, especially if we feel we aren’t qualified to give them. The vision of speaking to someone else helps to translate that motivation into an exterior perspective.” Classic George. You ask him a simple question and he gives you the secrets of life.
“Okay…” You breathed, “But when I look at myself, all I do is criticize them, whether it’s a mirror or a clone.” You were close to giving up, and it was clear George was running out of options. He remained stationary, his hands never leaving your shoulders. He sighed, thinking for a moment before making any sudden movements.
Mere seconds later, George resumed his shoulder massage, but instead of maintaining his posture, he bent down, mouth level with your ear. His voice was not above a whisper, his tone dripping with a new and improved delightful idea.
“Tell me how to help you, my Domine…”
You froze. This was the only thing that actually got you to sit up straight. You opened your eyes and turned to look at George only for him to shush you and turn your head back to stare at the wall in front of you. He kept his left hand cupped around your jaw, making sure you didn’t move it again, but there was no discipline. His grip was quite loose. You ideally could’ve gotten up and walked out if you truly wanted to. He wasn’t keeping you there.
“You know latin?” You mumbled, still perplexed at his new name for you.
George chuckled. “I know many things. All are useful at some time or another.” He pressed into your shoulders, his smile growing as you released some tension in the form of a strained whimper. He leaned to your ear again.
“If you can’t tell yourself what to do…tell me instead.”
You froze, but your following response was done with no hesitation. It was methodic. Robotic, almost. You adjusted your posture, locking into your newfound confidence.
“Make me feel good.” You whispered, knowing no additional details were needed. George went straight to work, placing his fingers at the back of your neck, towards the base of your skull. “Make me feel that sensation again.” You added, not knowing how to describe it but already feeling addicted. You wished it could flow through your body on command, giving you a boost at any time of day. You pretended as if you were alone, eyes closed and rhythmic breathing as his hands explored your body. A small sigh left George’s lips, exhaling a small puff of air onto your lower back while his fingers wisped across your spine. Every touch felt like a feather, as if he was there but he wasn’t. He truly gave you the illusion of peaceful solitude, merely being an assisting spirit to guide you in your journey of inward and outward reflection.
“Move to the front.” You announced, and George stopped in his tracks. Your initial reaction was to withdraw, fearing you sounded too demanding. Too commanding. Too strong. But you remained stationary, awaiting your lover’s next move. You heard him shuffle, and the new shadow in front of you, changing the amount of natural light billowing onto your body gave you the confirmation that your orders had been followed. George inhaled another long breath, ostensibly entering his own corresponding headspace.
“All I wish is to please you, my dear.”
Your body gave into the scene, falling back onto your palms while still keeping your legs crossed. You arched your back, pushing your chest towards him, giving him a compensatory level of control in this otherwise hierarchical situation. After a while, George began to drift off as well, taking in the sensation across your torso as he massaged your chest and pressed small kisses across your shoulders. You didn’t expect him to take to this so easily, but it seemed like second nature to the two of you. Perhaps it was always meant to be this way.
What mostly came to your surprise was when George’s fingers brushed over your nipples through your shirt, causing your hips to jolt involuntarily. You still weren’t sure if that was intentional or not, but there was certainly an additional advantage. He was testing you, waiting to see if it was what you wanted. Technically, you had complete control over what he would do next, yet he knew that if he took matters into his own hands, you wouldn’t stop him. You wanted it more than ever. You wanted to tell him to just have his way with you. And you knew you absolutely could. He knew you could. He would do whatever you wanted him to. But it wasn’t about what he wanted. It was all about how long you could fight the urge to tip the balance. To realize that the one who submits all power is truly the one in control. He was giving you the chance to be demanding. To be commanding. To be strong. The power play was absolutely diabolical.
“Do that again.” You choked out, trying your best not to sound desperate. George knew exactly what you wanted. So he did it again, but softer. More enjoyable. More deliberate. And by telling him what you wanted, he knew you had acquired a new goal. And you wanted to see how far he would go to please you.
“Make me feel confident.” You sighed. “Make me feel powerful.”
“I can’t do that, dear.” George replied without missing a beat, thumbs still slowly dragging back and forth across your nipples. “That has to come from within.”
You whined. The closer you got to what you wanted, the harder it was to keep up the confidence. You thought choosing the route of pleasure would be easier for you, but it was the same old story. Entering with a confident facade was simple. But the deeper you went, the more you wanted to back out.
“It doesn’t feel like me.” You breathed. George moved his hands to your waist, opting for a soft massage to ease the level of stimulation.
“Don’t lose it,” He whispered, “You were doing great.” You didn’t respond, slowly being dragged back inside your own head. If this had any shot of working, George knew he had to keep you grounded. “We both know this is something the real you wants.”
You paused for a moment, gathering your thoughts into a neatly folded pile. Based on your personal skills, it looked more like a lumpy pile of laundry, but at least it was all together. You tried to imagine that you were alone again. That your only company was yourself. And for the first time, the person staring back at you was a true reflection. Still in your own world, you whispered so that only you could hear.
“Give me what I need. Give me what I want.” But George heard you loud and clear, assuming his role and getting you to the end. He resumed his deliberate touching across your chest, and you immersed yourself in it as if it were your own. You don’t know how long it went on for, but all you knew was that you never wanted it to end. George moved as if he was giving a deep tissue massage to your soul. Everything you said, he did. Everywhere you wanted to be touched, he did. He didn’t need to understand your rhyme or reason. Whatever your body was calling out for needed to be answered. The real you needed to be heard.
Eventually you felt a bout of pressure begin to build inside you. The longer it went on, the stronger it felt. Lately, the concept of pleasure had been one form of stress relief you couldn’t rely on. Try as you must, you couldn’t bring yourself to the edge. But this time was different. In his newfound role, George had bestowed upon you the virtual reality of physical pleasure. It wasn’t sex. You didn’t want sex. Throughout this entire session, you had never once asked him to touch you in your most intimate place. This was about stimulation. But if it ended in an orgasm, you were more than satisfied with that.
And you felt it. It slowly rose, like a high tide during a full moon. The soft light bouncing off the rippling water like your body started to shake, the glorious light of your soul trying to break out of your skin. Though he sensed you nearing the edge, George didn’t speed up. He didn’t slow down. He didn’t change anything. He stared at you as your head tipped back, small moans leaving your lips. You couldn’t say anything else to direct him, but there was nothing left to say anyway. The pleasure had peaked, the wave reaching a new height. It came crashing down onto the shore, your orgasm flowing through you. You released with a gasping shout, your exclamation nothing short of the highest praise for George and his intricate touches. Your arms could no longer hold you up, and your elbows buckled, sending you falling backwards onto the floor. George caught your head before you made contact, lowering you down the rest of the way. He rubbed small circles on the soft skin of your stomach just above your waistband. You sighed, your breathing slowly returning to normal as your lover began to leave small kisses on your right shoulder. You giggled, celebrating the fact that your new goal had been accomplished: it was the first time you had ever come untouched.
George laid on the floor next to you, head tucked in your neck and one hand flat over your stomach, patting it in a slow, rhythmic fashion. “You need anything?” He whispered, poking your ear with his nose. You shook your head no, not wanting to move from this position, which included having him next to you. You rolled on your side to face him, brushing a few strands of hair away from his face. “I do have one question, though,” you mumbled, still in your post-coital haze, “does meditation usually lead to sex?”
George chuckled, slinging his arm over your hip to brush his hand over your back. “That is called tantra, love. It uses multiple forms of stimulation simultaneously, and yes, sometimes it does result in pleasurable situations like these.”
You smiled, pondering the topic. “So it’s meditation in the form of pleasure? But how does that relate to me feeling more confident?”
“It’s all about unlocking your true potential.” George replied, pausing briefly to perfect his explanation. “You felt confident. That’s mental stimulation. And paired with the physical stimulation, it provided enough emotional stimulation for you to have a powerful release.” He stared into your eyes with a mixture of love and gratitude. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to own up to it yet, but having you tell him what to do was also an example of mental and emotional stimulation. One that he had not been able to find on his own. The concept of joint meditation was something mutually beneficial.
“So when can we do it again?” You mused, earning a light chuckle from the man beside you.
“Whenever you want, my Domine.” George teased, seeing how you shivered at the recurring mention of your new title. He took the pillow that you had been using as a cushion and urged you to lift your head, placing it on the floor underneath you, watching as you sunk into the plush fabric. You smiled warmly, watching him take another pillow from the pile beside you, both of you get comfortable on the floor. The carpet was soft enough, but the addition of the pillows made for a fine place to have a nap. Eyes softly closing as the warm sun cascaded through the window and blanketed your nearly sleeping forms, your voice came as a barely audible whisper.
“Did you enjoy having me be in charge for once?” George smiled, not bothering to open his eyes to respond, but hearing your statement loud and clear. He thought for a moment before answering, but there was technically no need. He was no stranger to an apparently not so new experience.
“You’ve always been in charge to me, my dear.”

“I’ve told this story before. Meeting and shooting George at Warner Brothers Records. How we talked about Hard Days Night and how spent an amazing amount of time hanging out with my favorite Beatle. Blah blah blah. This moment is from the video shoot for Got My Mind Set on You directed by Gary Weis. During a break in production I showed George the cover of Musician Magazine that I had shot of him at the first shoot. I got a early preview copy from the Art Director. George told me he liked it and signed it for me. (one of the only 3 times I ever asked for an autograph) I was there with the director and a producer. Eventually they got up and had to get to work. George and I stayed there and just kept on talking for another 15-20 minutes. It was surreal cuz there I was sitting with George Harrison alone. To this day its probably one of my favorite moments ever. I can’t tell you how nice he was to me. The nicest!!!!” - Chris Cuffaro, cuffarophoto.com, November 17, 2016 (x)

On July 25, 1946, a horrifying incident unfolded involving two young African American couples: George Dorsey and his pregnant wife, Mae Murray, along with Roger Malcom and his wife, Dorothy Malcom. They were in the car of their employer, Loy Harrison, who was driving them home. However, their journey took a grim turn when they encountered a mob of white individuals blocking off Moore's Ford bridge in Georgia.
The situation escalated quickly as the two men were forcibly pulled from the car and subjected to a brutal beating. In a tragic turn of events, one of the women recognized a member of the mob, leading to both women being dragged from the vehicle and tied to a tree beside their husbands. All four victims were then shot dead. To further compound the horror, Mae Murray had her fetus forcibly removed from her body.
Despite the murders occurring in broad daylight, the killers were never apprehended. One potential motive emerged when it was revealed that earlier in the month, Roger Malcom had allegedly stabbed a white man named Barnette Hester. Malcom was released on bail, a sum paid by his employer, Loy Harrison.
The lack of justice in this case underscores the deeply rooted racial tensions and systemic failures prevalent during that era, as well as the tragic consequences borne by innocent lives caught in the crossfire of prejudice and violence.

"Mums, Yer Boys" reaches 10,000 reads!
Tumblr media
10,000 reads for "Mums, Yer Boys are Cryin'" which is a terrible title but a sweet story from 'way back when I first started writing fanfics -- this one was meant to be a one-shot, like everything else I'd written up til then, but somehow the story of the teenaged Paul searching for John after Julia's death turned into a second chapter where he takes control (and care) of both John and a dour, miserable Mimi and that turned into a chapter about how empty and lonely their lives feel and then suddenly it seemed like I had absolutely no control over the story of these two young characters: There is 17 year old John Lennon -- wild in grief, angry, lashing out and desperate to find a place where he belongs, desperate to figure out HOW to find a life he can stand to live, in a world where he can never fit in to. With Julia's death he is pretty much convinced he has nothing, is nothing in this miserable post-war Liverpool world. He is mean; he is funny; he is profane; he is needy. John can't see or identify his targets but he sprays his anger like a machine gun, not caring where it hits.
There's is 16 year-old Paul McCartney, precisely the opposite -- self-contained, private, all tucked in on himself and watchful. He is constantly on the lookout to see how he can control what is going on around him. He carries his own anger -- both at Liverpool and the world around him -- but it's entirely focused, better-directed, and dangerously quiet. He is kind; he is watchful; he is bossy; he is anxious; he is forgiving. If John is a machine gun, Paul is a suicide bomber who keeps resetting his timer. Together, both of them find a safe place to put their heartache, and the first stirrings of a longing that neither of them fully understand yet, but are tentatively ready to explore.
There is Mimi Smith, cold, snobby, snippy, unable to show herself (or the depths of her love) to her troubled nephew, and repeatedly thrown off her guard by the sheep-eyed, common boy who never lets her off the hook.
There is Julia, present only in death -- at her laying out, where John falls apart; at her funeral, which Paul attends while all in his head. There is Jim McCartney, stern, too quick with his hands, but capable of compassion, and even to admit his own failings, in time. There is George Harrison. A bit grubby. Always hungry, easily called out but a sure friend.
There is even Auntie Jin and her bowlful of "Irish witchery..." I've always been very grateful that people like this story, which probably could use some editing but I've never touched it. It just kind of tumbled from my keyboard and has always felt "true" to me in a way I can't explain, so I've just let it be. THANK YOU for reading it, and for some really wonderful, encouraging comments. You can read the whole story at A03.
And truly, thank you for reading this story and keeping it alive. Some it helped to build "Carry that Weight." This talented artist created this image several years ago. Not for the story but ... it really is perfectly suited to the final chapter.

i've been meaning to do a short-by-shot breakdown of the trailers for the upcoming season of Doctor Who, and with full-length trailer #2 out today it seems like a good time.
this will cover the teaser trailer (dropped after the christmas special), trailers #1 and #2 (dropped March 22 and today respectively), and the YouTube short they've released with all the episode titles. I've previously looked at the premiere date teaser released March 15.
Title Drop Short
I'll start with this because it is the shortest and gives some helpful hints to identifying other clips.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The accompanying audio here is some babies crying as the lights flicker, showing the monster's shadow. Is the monster hunting the babies? Is it supposed to be protecting them?
Tumblr media
What this screencap doesn't convey is the music notes lifting off the page on the far right. When looking up "The Devil's Chord" (aka the tritone) I find on Wikipedia that "George Harrison uses tritones on the downbeats of the opening phrases of the Beatles songs "The Inner Light", "Blue Jay Way", and "Within You Without You" - I'm clearly not big up on my George songs, and I think it would be hilarious if the Beatles-centric episode of Doctor Who winds up being specifically George Harrison-centric.
I can find no info on who Timothy Drake might be (besides Robin, but that feels like a long shot). There is a piece credited to Beethoven behind the book.
Tumblr media
"Boom" - clearly The Moff trying to bring back the spooky one-word title steez of Blink and Hide and Listen and so on. This clip has falling rubble and a bit of lazer fire, and above the door we have written "Entrance 3"
Tumblr media
We have a cawing corvid behind this one, as snow rushes past what looks like a sign for a pub. Pretty creepy sign!
Tumblr media
The words appear in sequence with some electronic chimes here, before the whole thing glitches out. Social media episode?
Tumblr media
Here we have the title for the episode that was provisionally known as "Regency", written by Kate Herron and Briony Redman. We have reference to "The Duchess of Pemberton", who is presumably "The Duchess" played by Indira Varma. 8 May 1813 is in fact in the Regency period, but I can't find any other historical significance to that date.
Tumblr media
The multiple screens and tech set up here gives me the vibes of a television studio. Will Ruby turn out to be a Sam Jones situation, a companion orchestrated perfectly for the Doctor? I'd say that's unlikely but I'm not ruling it out.
Tumblr media
Now THIS is a Doctor Who episode title. Go off king give us nothing!
Alright bearing those aesthetics in mind, let's move on to the teaser trailer that premiered after the Christmas special
Season Teaser
youtube
This trailer introduced us to the great, kinda creepy music that recurs throughout the rest of them. And a powerful gaze from Dr. Who themself.
Tumblr media
I think I can connect this shot to a scene we'll see later.
We then pop to another stare, in a shirt we've already seen in the Christmas special - so this is probably Episode 1 ("Space Babies").
Tumblr media
Lots of good stares this episode, as we also see him looking through a window in the premiere date teaser. Who is that behind him with Ruby?
Then he's running down a corridor, and I'm so glad they've chosen to give him loads of different outfits because that makes this job much easier.
Tumblr media
This is undoubtedly in Episode 2. Is he racing to stop "The Devil's Chord" from being played? Or maybe he's going to find Ruby ensnared somewhere. More on that later.
Tumblr media
Why is he wearing a whistle? Why are the lights so low?
Tumblr media
Were they working out? I love it.
Tumblr media
A TARDIS design has to have some good levers for yanking on. This one has that and a jukebox AND mood lighting. good for her!
Tumblr media
"I have the whole universe at my fingertips" - this is only part of a quote, which we'll get more of in a later trailer. I like this spot on a cliff's edge that they end up on, and I've just noticed the silly little tree near the TARDIS. The Doctor fell deeply in love with Dingle's Door when they regenerated from 13 and now their go-to spot is gonna be precarious rocks overlooking the sea. Just my prediction. This is likely Episode 1 "Space Babies", given other clips we've seen of them popping out here in their Christmas special outfits.
Tumblr media
A door opens, casting a shadow on Ruby as she looks somewhat dumbfounded at what lies on the other side. Judging by the costume, this is probably Space Babies too, and yeah it looks like there might be babies in jars behind Ruby there...
Tumblr media
It really looks like he has fangs in this screencap. Again, probably Space Babies given the costume. But who knows!
Tumblr media
He's slamming on a button. Possibly to "Reset Port B"?
Tumblr media
Here is the Doctor dancing with Jonathan Groff in Episode 6 "Rogue", and nobody seems too interested in them, but then:
Tumblr media
The Duchess (and those around her) have taken note of something.
Tumblr media
Mr Groff glancing at the Doctor's lips lmao
Tumblr media
I love his wig! Everyone has taken notice now, and there's clearly something that has interrupted their dance.
Tumblr media
Here we've got the pair strutting along the TARDIS walkway, probably having just changed into these sweet outfits before heading to:
Tumblr media
"Abbey Road Studios" in Episode 2 "The Devil's Chord"
Tumblr media
They're freaking out I love them. This is a great second-trip in the TARDIS historical. The Doctor has fallen back on their old tricks, but at least they didn't end up in Cardiff again. They're in the recording booth here during a Beatles studio session.
Tumblr media
Where is Ringo?!!!
Tumblr media
There he is (:
Tumblr media
The Doctor has stepped on something he shouldn't. This is presumably is "gonna be a minute!" in the other teaser I've looked at. Shot in the dark, this is from Episode 3 "Boom". Because of land mines. (And the rubble and lazer blasts in the Short seem to match the "warzone" vibe)
Tumblr media
"I've really stepped in it now". This looks like similar lighting to the very first "intense stare" shot from the start of this trailer.

John Lennon Tribute Songs – Musings and Impressions
I decided this morning to look into what John Lennon tribute songs (+songs about John's death) are out there and found the results quite mixed but interesting. So here's some of my thoughts on them.
Includes songs by: Bob Dylan, The Cranberries, David Gilmour, Elton John, George Harrison, Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Queen.
All Those Years Ago – George Harrison (1981)
youtube
Roll On John – Bob Dylan (2012)
Probably the most classic tribute song on this list, which is why I'm mentioning it first. I think it's somewhat misunderstood, because in my opinion it is far more personal than it's sometimes given credit for, even though it does fall into some clichés with how it references John's songs. It's overall positive, focusing on the good aspects of John and George's relationship as well as of John's legacy as a whole, with a few problematizing nuggets peppered in ("Living with good and bad"; "You had control of our smiles and our tears"). I see how the religious edge might be off-putting to some, but it feels incredibly earnest to me. The rock n' roll guitar riff is a lovely tribute to John's unabashed love for that genre.
(Also, I wrote a bit more in depth about the song and how I think it relates to George's view of John here.)
youtube
This is not a song I can justify the existence of. If it had been released shortly after John's murder maybe, but I don't see what it brought to the table 30+ years after the fact. It feels extremely gimmicky, dropping simplistic lyrical references and Wikipedia-page facts, and otherwise doesn't seem like it has anything substantial to say. I don't think these types of songs have to be written by someone who had a deep personal connection with the subject, but none of this feels natural, earned, or remotely insightful and the emotions are rather vapid.
Murder – David Gilmour (1984)
youtube
This song is musically interesting and the lyrics are quite compelling, but the centering of MDC's point of view is somewhat uncomfortable, given the actual context of his motivations. I feel this song works better as a reflection on murder as a concept, rather than a specific murder.
I Just Shot John Lennon – The Cranberries (1996)
youtube
The title of this one worried me but actually it sounds like it could be on Some Time in New York City if you threw a few saxes onto it; John wrote about tragedies in a very similar way (like the Troubles, which The Cranberries – of course – also wrote about). Despite the directness, this works and feels poignant rather than edgy.
Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny) – Elton John (1982)
youtube
I like the way this song opens with the metaphor of a gardener, giving the song a degree of universality, not just in the sense that John "belonged to the world" but also that it could be related to any loss. This is contrasted with the bridge ("And I've been knockin', but no one answers…"), where John is finally name-dropped, which adds such a personal touch to the song. It's masterful and heartbreaking, especially given the fact that Elton was having trouble getting through to John during his lifetime as well. A wonderful, heartfelt tribute.
The Late Great Johnny Ace – Paul Simon (1983)
youtube
This feels less like a tribute and more like a reflection on history. John's death in 1980 is contrasted with Johnny Ace's death in 1954, as well as John F. Kennedy's in 1963. The music is harrowing and intriguing, which really underlines the senselessness of all these deaths. I enjoy the observed parallelisms and the way Paul manages to make the song personal despite not having a close rapport with John. In that way it kind of reminds me of A Day In The Life.
I Don't Know Why – Yoko Ono (1981)
youtube
Life Is Real (Song for Lennon) – Queen (1982)
Like Here Today mentioned below, this is more of an anti-tribute song in my view. Ultimately it seems that to Yoko, the search for meaning in John's death is fruitless. Musically, the song is a bit long and repetitive, but as she sings: "You left me, you left me, you left me without words."
Also, the story the album cover tells is poignant, possibly more so than any song on it: a glass, which could be half empty or half full; the fog like an uncertain future, clouding the New York skyline; a pair of glasses, the ghost of a lost loved one; and vision itself, forever obstructed by the murder Yoko was forced to witness.
youtube
Musically, I find this one to be quite wonderful and I think I can see how it was influenced by John's sound to an extent. But it also appears to be so personal to Freddie Mercury as well as rather cryptic that it feels odd as a tribute, per se. That's not really a problem in my opinion, but it's notable that without the name-drop it wouldn't even be obvious this song was about someone – let alone John Lennon – having died. This makes the "(Song For Lennon)" part of the title feel a tad performative.
Here Today – Paul McCartney (1982)
youtube
It was thinking about this song this morning that prompted me to go listen to the other entries. While "All Those Years Ago" is a song in which George seems to proclaim that he understands John better than most people, on "Here Today", Paul discredits himself as a source on John basically immediately; within the first few lines of the song, he asserts that John would laugh in response to Paul claiming he really knew John. He's in a sense shooting down the idea of writing a straightforward tribute like George's because he does not appear to trust himself to make absolute statements on who John was. Instead, he shifts the focus to his own experience of their relationship, declaring that he loves John and is thankful, despite their possible lack of mutual understanding.
The song is fiercely personal and does not leave space for someone to relate to it as an uninvolved fan of John's, or even as one of John's loved ones who is not Paul, like Empty Garden and All Those Years Ago do. And yet Paul plays this song every night in concert as a tribute. It fascinates me deeply, not to mention it is lyrically one of his standout pieces as well as immensely moving musically.

Above: A current photo of the Row Barge Pub in Henley, Inbetween: George Harrison smiling in a pub in 1978 (whether it's the Row Barge or not is unknown) Photo by: Olivia Harrison, Below: George and Olivia Harrison with Dot Mitchell and her husband Norman at the Remenham Club in Henley, mid-1970s.
George Harrison + The Row Barge Pub
"We [Palin, Eric Idle, and George Harrison] all walked down to the local pub -- where we drank Brakspear’s Henley Ales and played darts." - Michael Palin, Oct. 1975, Diaries 1969-1979
"George heard that it was the birthday of Dot Mitchell, then the landlady at The Row Barge, his local public house. He called her to one side and, teasingly, told her to hold out her hand and close her eyes. Then, he dropped three perfect, impossibly valuable rubies into her hand. ‘Have a nice birthday,’ he told her.” - Eric Idle (1978)
"There’s a photo of George on the wall with Edward Heath -- he signed it to the guy who owns the place, 'To Norman, a little fellow everybody likes -- George and little Eddie'. They have a D. Horse sticker on the counter. A bit later this older couple came in, Phyllis & Tom. We went over and sat with them all night [...] They said that after Dhani was born George came in a lot and was so happy and proud and was telling everyone about him [...] [Phyllis] said she saw George just before Xmas carrying a Christmas tree on his back up the hill to F. Park -- some Hindu! [...] George had this hat on once and she said she liked it, and he gave it to her! She has a photo of her dancing with him that she said she’d show us next time we came." - WALH fanzine issue #25 (1979) [x]
"George and I had gone down to the pub that night to relax and get a little drunk. It turned out to be Norman’s birthday, so he closed the bar a little early to celebrate, and we stayed along with a few of Norman’s friends. After a few rounds, someone produced a guitar, gave it to George, and George proceeded to play every Beatles song he could remember." - Neil Larsen, Circus Weekly (April 1979) [x]
“George himself was a generous and intelligent man who suffered no fools, and he was always very private. He used to enjoy a drink at the Row Barge pub in Henley but he didn’t go into the town as much after John Lennon was shot.” - George Rob (Friar Park stonemason) [x]
"So my friend Nicole told me a story of how she used to work in the pub where George Harrison would bike to regularly and how one christmas instead of tipping all of the waitresses there like usual he bought every single one of them a small diamond necklace. They were all so stunned and thankful and oh my god so happy and he hugged them all and he said his wife helped him pick them out. And oh my god how can you not love this man." - niceboulder [x]
"I was in the pub one night [in 1986/87] -- as you do -- I got talking to the landlady behind the bar, and I go, 'Is that George Harrison's house across the road?' She goes 'Yeah. Oh, he does come in here occasionally.' I'm just [sarcastically] yeah 'course he does, kind of thing.
So I was talking, and some of the people I was with were talking, and suddenly this bloke comes in. Bit scruffy-looking at first. I looked at him and thought, 'I know him. I know him. I really do know him.' He was polite. He acknowledged everybody. He just said something like, 'Good evening, all,' and he walked into the room in the back. Now this room at the back, nobody else could go in. It was a private room.
So I looked at the landlady, and she goes, 'Yeah that was George Harrison,' and I go, 'What, really?' She goes 'Yeah'.
Then many years later after George had died, apparently, he left some money in his will -- I don't know how true this story is, but I think he left something in his will to the landlady of this pub because she kept that room at the back just for him. Nobody else could go in. People with him could go in, but members of the public couldn't. I think it was like George's little hideaway where he could just be himself, and obviously having to go across the road to the pub sort of thing probably made him feel a bit more normal? If that's the right word." - Beatle Dave [x]

I'd love a George Harrison x fem!Reader one-shot where he plays her a song he's working on, but he isn't sure it's any good. She tells him to keep working on it because he's too talented to just give up, especially when she thinks it sounds great. The song turns out to be "My Sweet Lord." Thank you so much in advance!

•Warnings: Nothing really but fluff. •Summary: One early morning you’re let into your boyfriends studio to listen to a new song he’s been making and here’s what you have to say.. •Characters:4,601 •Additional Information: I’m sorry if this is not quite good, I made this at 11 pm and I’m very tired. Anyway, thanks for letting this be my first Beatles fanfic!
Tumblr media
It was barely 7 am, you were in the kitchen making breakfast for the two of you, while george was in his makeshift studio working on a new album.
You started getting the table ready, placing down a couple of fried eggs on George’s plate, a jug of freshly squeezed orange juice and coffee in the middle of the small table with glasses near it, and you yourself would be having a egg sandwich that morning.
Once everything was ready you called for george to come down for breakfast.
While you were just getting yourself comfortable in your seat, george walked into the dinning room. “Morning, darling.” He said with a smile on his face, as he walked over to you, leaning over and giving your cheek a small kiss. “Morning sweetheart, I made your favorite.” He sat down in his chair, grabbing the coffee press to pour himself a cup of coffee. “I see, thank you very much, but before I start eating can I ask you of something?” You grabbed your sandwich, about to bite into it before stopping yourself to answer, “Ask away, dear.” George looked up at you, “Could you stop by the studio when you’re done with breakfast? I have a song I’ve been working on and I think I need your opinion on it, I’m just not quite sure if should keep it or leave it.” You agreed that you would stop by and help, honestly you loved when he asked you to listen to his music because that gave you a chance to actually see and hear the magic happen in front of you. Plus you knew it made him happy knowing that you enjoyed his music, so it was basically a win win.
After breakfast and cleaning up after you two, you headed to George’s studio in the house, you just couldn’t wait for him to blow your socks right off.
You knocked on the door, giving it a couple of seconds before hearing George saying you could come in. You’d turn the door knob and push the door open, the first thing you saw was George sitting down in a chair with his guitar on his lap, and a music stand with a piece of paper clipped to it in front of him. “Make yourself comfortable, I promise this will be quick.” You walked in, and sat down beside him. “Play whenever you’re ready.” You gave him a small smile, watching him let out a small sigh, before beginning to play ‘My Sweet Lord’, looking down here and there but mostly keeping his gaze on the piece of paper in front of him, as he laid out the new song just for you to hear.
The more he played, the more it felt as if the atmosphere in the room changed, in the background you’d hear the backing tracks of all sorts of other instruments that held up the main guitar chorus and pretty soon George’s voice. “My sweet lord..mm-my lord.” You sat there in awe, you couldn’t help but just pat your thigh and tap your feet on the ground, as you listened to the song. You say this a lot to him but his singing seriously was the most angelic thing you’ve ever heard compared to everyone else’s.
Not long the song was over, George looked over to you, seeing your eyes sparkle, and your face adorned with large smile. He just couldn’t help with laugh, “So..is there anything you wanna say about any part of the song that might’ve made you think there was something not quiet right with it or I should put a certain part in a new key?” You sat there for a moment, you thought it was good the way it was as of now, but knowing that George was a perfectionist and would never give up no matter what, even if it was the smallest thing in the world he’d still go over it twenty more times making sure it was just right before sending it off, you made sure to pick your words wisely. “I wish to say it’s good as it is as of now, but I know you well enough and I want you to keep working on it. I know along the way you’ll come up with a new little thing or two you’ll want to add to the song, so please just take your time until you think it’s good enough to be the final product. But for now that’s all I have to say really.” For the rest of the day George really stuck to that comment, thinking about you saying it over and over again. He sat in that studio looking over the lyrics, changing and re-adding things. Here and there he’d give himself a break, go outside give himself a moment to bask in everything before heading back inside with a head full of wonders and new creative ideas.
After all the mixing, recording, playing, a week later he’d do the same thing, ask you to go to the studio to play you what he called the finish product with a name finally, which happened to be ‘My Sweet Lord’, but this time when you heard it you called it a master piece ready to be welcomed into the world with open arms.

George Harrison, 1988; photographed for Time Out.
“George Harrison arrived a little late for the photo session in jeans and mirror shades. Easy on the power pedal, he allowed himself to be coaxed out of the mirror shades. ‘I’m not looking too good; I haven’t had a day off since 1961.’ He complied with a request for the chin-in-hand pose. 'They always want this one. It’s the Rolling Stone shot. Unimaginative bastards.’ [...] [Monty Python’s Life of Brian] was about how people will just follow anybody. They’ll miss the real guy and follow the silly guy. That’s reality, to me. It depends on what you term reality... It depends on what’s real, you know. The film industry isn’t reality anyway. Once you’re into that, reality flies out the window.’ [...] ‘I am not George. I am not really George. I am this living thing that goes on, always has been, always will be, but at this time, I happen to be in this body.’” - Time Out, 19 October 1988 (x)

TURKISH GIRLS SMOKING THE NINTH POST IN OUR SERIES (No. 9) | LEILA!
Two-for-one. This post whose video centerpiece of teenager/early-20s stunner Leila from Turkey is actually two different posts serving different masters wrapped up neatly into one tidy post package. Foremost, the inspiration for this post whose narrative you are reading was to fill the new weekly demand for our "The Video of The Week | SF Hall of Fame Division," which Leila does splendidly. And, of course, since Leila (pronounced like the Eric Clapton song Layla . . . more later!) "Lay-lah" is from Turkey this is also "Turkish Girls Smoking" and our ninth installment of that series, but the first update to "TGS" since the August 31, 2023 post showcasing Diloy/Dilay.
Leila is special among the impressively deep stable of YouTube girls -- they are NOT SF models -- available for any of the several webpages dedicated to young Turkish women (BHYSWs) who have shot a videos in which they are smoking cigarettes at least once or several times. Leila has appeared on multiple webpages -- "Hot310 Official" and "Smoker Girl." Few have been shown on more than one SF-oriented YT webpage. "The Queen" of that group without question and obviously is Mira Celik, who has appeared in dozens of YouTube videos, mainly with "Mr MoHsin YoUtUbE" and "Hot310 Official." Leila could be headed in that direction.

"Layla" is a love song. It's about Pattie Boyd, married to The Beatles guitarist George Harrison and when that relationship began to fail she walked into the open arms of Eric Clapton, all-time elite guitarist. The relationship among the three of them got entangled in a mess. Harrison and Clapton were friendly in their own right during the mid- to late-1960s when the "Big Three" in the U.K. were The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Moody Blues. Clapton was in The Yardbirds (as were Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck at different times), Cream and Blind Faith before going solo.
And one day perhaps, someone will write a love song about our Leila!
The Lyrics to "Layla" by Derek and the Dominos (1970), written by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon, all-time classic slide guitar solo by Duane Allman
"What will you do when you get lonely No one waiting by your side? You've been running, hiding much too long You know it's just your foolish pride "Leila, got me on my knees Leila, begging, darling, please Leila Darling, won't you ease my worried mind? "Tried to give you consolation Your old man had let you down Like a fool, I fell in love with you You turned my whole world upside down "Leila, got me on my knees Leila, I'm begging, darling, please Leila Darling, won't you ease my worried mind? "Make the best of the situation Before I finally go insane Please don’t say we'll never find a way Tell me all my love's in vain "Leila, got me on my knees Leila, I'm begging, darling, please Leila Darling, won't you ease my worried mind? "Yeah, yeeeeah "Leila, got me on my knees Leila, begging, darling, please Leila Darling, won't you ease my worried mind?"
From the album "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" released on November 9, 1970

Topline
A Georgia judge on Friday denied bond for Harrison Floyd, the only one of 18 co-defendants in former President Donald Trump’s election interference case in Fulton County to stay in jail, and the former Black Voices for Trump leader has a history of politics and legal trouble.
Key Facts
Floyd, a 39-year-old U.S. Marine veteran, served as the director of the political group Black Voices for Trump during the 2020 election cycle, and was charged last week in the Fulton County case with violating Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, for influencing a witness and conspiracy to commit solicitation of false statements.
According to the indictment, Floyd pressured Ruby Freeman, an election worker in Fulton County, after she refused to change the results of the county’s vote in the 2020 election for Trump, with Freeman testifying before the House January 6 Committee last year that she was forced to leave her home for two months and quit her job after receiving threats after the election.
Floyd, a graduate of George Washington University, had become a prominent Republican in Georgia in recent years, running in 2019 for a Congressional seat.
Floyd dropped out of the race just over a month after announcing his candidacy, saying he “might be the guy doing this in the future,” while expressing his support for a GOP state representative in his place (Democrat Carolyn Bourdeaux won the district in 2020).
In 2020, Floyd led the organization Black Voices for Trump, and also served as executive producer of right-wing outlet Bright News and as a partner at Washington D.C.-based Commonwealth International, according to his LinkedIn page.
Floyd had been charged in a separate case in May with second-degree assault and arrested for allegedly attacking an FBI agent who had served him a grand jury subpoena in the Department of Justice’s investigation into efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
According to a complaint in federal District Court in Maryland, Floyd refused to accept the subpoena, putting his finger to the face of one of two FBI agents who arrived at his residence, yelling: “You haven’t given me anything; I don’t know who the f**k you are.”
Later that night, Floyed called 911, accusing the agents of accosting him and saying: “They were lucky I didn’t have a gun on me, because I would have shot his fucking ass,” the Huffington Post reported.
Forbes has reached out to Floyd’s court-listed attorney in Maryland, Carlos Salvado—Floyd does not have an attorney listed in the Georgia case.
On Friday, Fulton County Judge Emily Richardson denied bond for Floyd after he determined he posed a flight risk and a risk to commit further criminal felonies if released on bail (Georgia state law requires defendants to be determined to pose no “significant risk of fleeing” and pose no “threat or danger to any person” or of committing a felony to be released on bail).
What To Watch For
Richardson said in her determination on Friday that the terms of Floyd’s bond “will be addressed,” but that the full terms fall on Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee, who is overseeing the case. Floyd, however, has contested his bond denial, telling Richardson on Friday: “There is no way I’m a flight risk. I showed up here before the president was here.”
Tangent
Trump was indicted by a grand jury in Fulton County last week on 13 felony counts, including racketeering, solicitation of violation of oath by a public officer, conspiracy to commit forgery, false statements and conspiracy to impersonate a public officer.. After just over a week, Trump surrendered to authorities in a brief procedure on Thursday, posting a $200,000 bond after giving a mug shot and his fingerprints before promptly leaving Georgia. All 18 of his co-defendants also turned themselves in by Friday, with Pastor Stephen Lee becoming the last to do so before the 12 p.m. deadline, following a group of former Trump aides and attorneys, as well as so-called fake electors in Trump’s legal team’s dubious plot to overturn the results of his election loss to President Joe Biden.

At the time of this writing, Effects is available to stream from Tubi, Screambox, and Arrow, as well as various PPV options. The film is available on physical media as a Blu-ray from AGFA.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Chad, will be The Mad Butcher (1971), aka Lo strangolatore di Vienna, starring Victor Buono. Yikes!
